Dania Beach History

Originally known as Modello, the city traces its roots back to the late 19th century when it became a hub for tomato farming and the Florida East Coast Railway. The growing community optimized a spirit of progress that played a pivotal role in its development and resilience through challenges.

The historic roots of the first city in Broward County date back to the 1880s, when much of what is now the FEC railroad line was laid through the area. In recognition of this transportation advantage, a pioneer and developer named W. C. Valentine planned a

Wolfe spends as much time as he can on the road, often with Frank Fritz, his friend of 20 years and fellow picker, in tow. “A picker’s kind of like a nomad,” he explains. settlement called Modello and 12 Danish families moved from Chicago to settle there in 1898-1899. Three years later, 30 Danes were recruited from Oconto, Wisconsin, to colonize the settlement, and the first home was built by A.C. Frost, for whom a park is now named. Frost built the first general store in 1902 and became Modello’s first postmaster. He also built and donated the towns first two schools. The following year, Dania Methodist Church was erected, becoming the city’s first place of worship.

When the town was incorporated in November 1904, its 35 residents, most of whom were Danes, changed the name to Dania. By 1912, Dania was a thriving community of almost 1,200 people and continued to grow through the 1920s when the city suffered tremendous setbacks. In 1925, the Dania Hotel caught on fire, and the Bank of Dania failed due to embezzlers in the Bank’s Atlanta home office. The 1926 hurricane with its 200 mile-perhour winds devastated the town, destroying the first church building completely, and subsequent damage prompted residents to vote for annexation to the neighboring City of Hollywood. De-annexation came in 1927.

Tomato Capital of the World

Early immigrants prospered in tomato farming and, as early as 1910, the Florida East Coast Railway was shipping to northern U.S. cities from “The Tomato Capital of the World.” During the three-month winter harvest, over 200 farmers shipped 1,000 to 1,500 train carloads of tomatoes and V. Taoring of New Orleans set up a tomato paste factory which contributed to local prosperity. In 1927, the first Tomato Day Celebration was held to raise funds for the new Dania Methodist Church. Attracting a crowd of over 5,000, it was so successful, that the celebration continued into the 1940s featuring messy, but official, tomato fights and a Miss Tomato Festival Pageant. In the late 1940s, the tomato boom was over, as crops began to fail from saltwater intrusion into the fields.

a new type of commerce -- the antique business -- arrived when Genevieve and Willard Ely set up shop in 1945. It took 10 years for other antique businesses to follow, but it wasn’t long thereafter that Broward’s first incorporated city once again gained fame, this time as the “Antique Capital of the South,” along Federal Highway.

Antique Row became not only a browser’s and shopper’s paradise but also the stores themselves are located inside buildings steeped in the city’s history including Broward County’s first movie theater.

The City has a wealth of historic architecture and a variety of architectural styles including Greek Revival (Dania Bank Building 1923); Mission Revival (Model Land Company Building 1900); Mediterranean Revival (the Martin Frost House 1913); and the Dania Beach Hotel, built by Francis Abreau in 1925. Art Deco styles are also present in the Florida Theater (1939) and the Pirates Inn, formerly the Hotel Katherine (1940).

Light Up the Night

The evening of November 16th will kick off with live music and festive activities followed by a dazzling drone show lighting up the night sky in celebration of the city’s rich history. The ceremonial Christmas tree lighting will join the light show finale. Families will have the chance to create lasting memories with a visit from Santa and his helpers, perfect for capturing holiday photos.

Guests can also enjoy a variety of free activities and treats, including an iceskating rink, arts and crafts, cookie decorating, and storytelling with Mrs. Claus. Participants are encouraged to join the Ugly Sweater Competition, with prizes awarded for the most festive outfits.

“This isn’t just a holiday celebration; it’s a special milestone for Dania Beach as we celebrate our 120-year legacy,” said Dania Beach Parks and Recreation Director Cassi Warren. “We invite everyone to come together, share in the joy, and create wonderful memories with our amazing community!

to compare their Prescription Drug and Health Coverage Options for the upcoming year.

New

The new prescription drug law is lowering Out-Of-Pocket costs on covered prescriptions. New in 2025, all Medicare plans will include a $2,000 Annual Cap on what you pay Out-Of-Pocket for Prescription Drugs under Medicare Part D. The Cap only applies to drugs that are covered by your plan, so it’s more important than ever to review your plan options to make sure your drugs are covered. That means you will not pay more than $2,000 in 2025 on Prescription Drugs covered under Medicare prescription drug coverage - that includes expensive prescription drugs to treat Cancer, chronic ill-

nesses and more.

This is in addition to improvements already in effect due to the Prescription Drug law including a $35 Cap on a month’s supply of each covered Insulin Product - and no Out-Of-Pocket costs for recommended Adult Vaccines covered under Part D, including the Shingles Vaccine.

Also starting in 2025, you can choose to spread your Out-Of-Pocket Drug costs across the calendar year instead of paying all at once at the pharmacy. It’s called the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. You can opt in with your plan in advance of January 1st and throughout 2025.

How to Compare Prescription Drug and Health Coverage Options www.Medicare.gov is the official source for information about Medicare and Open Enrollment. Start here to get unbiased information to find the type of coverage that best meets your needs.

Comparing prescription Drug and Health Coverage options is easy at:

www.Medicare.gov. Get started by clicking on “Find Plans.” Then enter your Zip Code, current prescriptions and favorite pharmacies. You will see a side-by-side comparison of the total cost for all the plans in your area, including the premium and how much you’ll pay for your prescriptions. You’ll also be able to see what plans cover your prescriptions and whether some plans offer extra benefits. If you are happy with your current choice, you don’t have to do anything. If you choose a new option for 2025, you can enroll on: www.Medicare.gov

Before you enroll in a plan, consider this advice:

• Check if your health care providers are in a plan’s network.

• Check if your prescriptions are included in a plan’s formulary and if the plan works with your pharmacy.

• Review a plan’s estimated total costs to you, including deductible and other Out-Of-Pocket Costs. Remember low monthly premiums may not always be the best overall value for your specific needs.

• Check if Medicare Advantage plans offer Extra Benefits, like Vision, Hearing or Dental Coverage, if you need these services.

• Understand that you may need to get approval from the plan before it will cover certain services or supplies.

• Check your plan’s Star Rating to see how it performs on quality, customer service and more.

Medicare Can Help To compare options and find the best coverage to fit your needs:

By Popular Demand

The Fantasticks Is Extended Through November 24th

By popular demand, Island City Stage has extended the run of The Fantasticks, its South Florida premiere and season opener, through November 24th, 2024! Described as “magical” and “a triumph,” Island City Stage’s newly reimagined The Fantasticks is taking sold out audiences on a nostalgic and beloved musical journey. Theatergoers won’t want to miss this extended opportunity to see this new production by original librettist and lyricist Tom Jones that features two young compelling gay leads.“‘The Fantasticks’ is the classic it is for a reason - it’s a beautiful story with a sumptuous score,” said Andy Rogow, Artistic Director of Island City Stage. “This new same-sex version just makes it all the more relatable to the fans, like me, who wore out their albums listening to it. We worked hard to obtain the rights to perform this version and I’m sure our audiences will fall in love with the show all over again.”

The Fantasticks is an allegorical story loosely based on Edmund Rostand’s 1894 play The Romancers (Les Romanesques), concerning two neighboring parents who trick their children into falling in love by pretending to feud. The LGBTQIA+ focused rewrite features two young gay men, Matt and Lewis, at the center of the story, instead of a young man and woman (the original characters were Matt and Luisa).

According to Playbill, during its original run at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village, The Fantasticks logged a record-breaking 17,162 performances. When the original production closed in 2002, news of the closing made the front page of The New York Times. In 2006, the revival opened at The Theater Center, directed by Jones. That production closed June 4, 2017, after playing 4,390 performances in the Jerry Orbach Theatre, for a combined total of 21,552 performances in New York - still the longest-running musical production worldwide. Over the years, notable names who have appeared in the Off-Broadway and touring productions have included Liza Minnelli, Elliott Gould, F. Murray Abraham, Glenn Close, Keith Charles, Carole Demas, Kristin Chenoweth and Bert Convy. This newly revised version of the classic show premiered in 2022 in Michigan.

ing risks as a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect through December 16th, 2024. This advisory is triggered by the occurrence of King Tides, which are unusually high tides expected periodically through midDecember. These seasonal high tides, coupled with Rising Sea Levels and inclement weather, are putting the city’s low-lying coastal areas at increased risk of flooding. For residents, motorists, and businesses, the next few weeks will require heightened awareness and preparedness.

Understanding King Tides

King Tides are an annual phenomenon, marked by unusually high tides that occur when the moon is closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This proximity amplifies the gravitational pull on Earth’s oceans, resulting in higher-than-normal tides. While these tides are a natural occurrence, they can have a significant impact on coastal areas, especially those already vulnerable to flooding. Hollywood is particularly susceptible to tidal flooding due to its flat topography and proximity to the coast. The city boasts seven miles of shoreline and nearly 8 miles of canals, making it highly vulnerable to Sea Level Rise and tidal inundation. As climate change contributes to Rising Sea Levels, these events are becoming more frequent and more severe, posing ongoing challenges to coastal communities.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted above• November 12th - November 19th

December 13th - December 16th

These high tides are expected to cause tidal flooding in low-lying coastal areas, especially during the times of highest tide. Coastal roads, parking lots, and docks are especially vulnerable. Flooding can also affect local Infrastructure, including stormwater systems, creating challenges for both residents and city officials.

The anticipated high tides could raise water levels by more than 2.5 feet in some areas, exacerbating the already significant flooding risks. Motorists are urged to use caution and avoid flooded streets during these times. Flooding is most likely to occur during the hours of peak tide, and it may persist for several hours depending on weather conditions, including rainfall and wind.

While King Tides are the primary cause of seasonal tidal flooding, they can be further influenced by other weather factors, particularly rainfall and wind strength. Heavy rainfall can lead to runoff, which, combined with high tides, can overwhelm stormwater drainage systems and increase the flooding risk. Wind can also play a significant role: winds blowing onshore (from the ocean toward land) can push additional water inland, exacerbating the height of the tides and flooding in vulnerable coastal areas.

These compounded effects make tidal flooding particularly unpredictable, and it’s important for residents to stay informed of weather forecasts and tide predictions during these periods of

communities grappling with the effects of

climate change, which has caused Rising Sea Levels over recent decades. The city’s **flat topography** and a large network of canals and waterways mean that water has few natural barriers or elevated areas to flow toward. As a result, tidal flooding can easily spread across the city’s streets, particularly in neighborhoods located closest to the coast.

City of Hollywood’s Flood Mitigation Efforts

To address the ongoing risks of tidal flooding, the City of Hollywood has been actively working on both short-term and long-term solutions to mitigate the impacts. One significant project already completed is the installation of flap gates in the city’s stormwater system. These gates are designed to prevent tidal water from flowing back into the stormwater drains, reducing the amount of water that floods streets during high tide events.

In addition to flap gates, the city has also deployed auxiliary pumps in high-risk areas. These pumps help to remove flood water from streets quickly, reducing the duration of flooding and minimizing its impact on local residents and businesses. These pumps are particularly important during periods of high tide when the natural drainage system is overwhelmed by rising waters.

On a larger scale, the city is investing in flood protection Infrastructure and planning for long-term climate adaptation.

Efforts include elevating roads, installing sea walls, and enhancing the stormwater management system to better cope with Rising Sea Levels. These projects are part of a broader strategy to prepare for the future and reduce the risks posed by both King Tides and permanent Sea Level Rise.

What Residents Can Do

While the city works to implement these flood mitigation measures, residents and businesses can take steps to protect themselves and minimize the impact of tidal flooding. Here are a few key recommendations:

1. Stay Informed: Monitor local weather reports and tide predictions to be aware of when high tides are expected.

2. Prepare for Flooding: If you live in a flood-prone area, consider installing flood barriers or elevating critical utilities above potential flood levels.

3. Avoid Flooded Areas: Never attempt to drive or walk through flooded streets, as they may be deeper than they appear or contain hidden hazards.

4. Help Prevent Drainage Blockages: Keep storm drains and gutters clear of debris to help facilitate drainage during rainstorms.

5. Stay Safe: During times of high tides and severe weather, stay indoors when possible to avoid dangerous conditions.

The Coastal Flood Advisory serves as an important reminder of the vulnerability of coastal communities to tidal flooding. King Tides, Rising Sea Levels, and the unpredictability of weather.
