BCT Elevates Its Presence At Broward’s Carnival Festival
By Rachel Richardson, BCT
Broward County Transit (BCT) is taking to the street this month by engaging thousands of residents during the largest festivals this season. It’s first stops were at Miami Broward Carnival recently held at the Broward County Central Regional Park. At Carnival’s recent J’ouvert celebration, BCT connected with more than six hundred people at the park and the Lauderhill Transit Center nearby. J’ouvert, originating in Trinidad and Tobago, is celebrated across the Caribbean culture and kicks off a series of festivities highlighted
eventgoers took a moment to prepare for their “fête” by eating Jamaican patties, ackee and saltfish, doubles, and other nationally recognized Caribbean dishes.
BCT employees met eventgoers from across the Caribbean diaspora during this year’s J’ouvert. The event attracted both local and out-of-town visitors and BCT was there to encourage everyone to take BCT to their return destination.
“We were excited to increase our presence in the community at one of the county’s signature events,” Broward County Transit Marketing Manager Traci Pollock shared. “It’s a great way to connect with BCT is out this event season actively
encouraging the community to jump on board to journey to any of their favorite events. The agency is committed to sharing with eventgoers just how easy and efficient it is to take BCT.
With convenient stops all around Broward, eventgoers can easily board a bus with $2 in cash, stop by one of the four transit centers, or simply download the Broward County Transit Mobile app, available in the Google Play and Apple App Store.
“Next stop is the Brazilian Music
Festival, and after that, Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival,” Pollock cheerfully stated. “We’re committed to increasing our community engagement and look forward to engaging with even more residents!” The Annual Brazilian Festival, which will take place on Saturday, October 26, is estimated to draw nearly 20,000 Brazilian music and culture enthusiasts to Fort Lauderdale Chase Stadium. Eventgoers are encouraged to hop on route 55 and disembark at Commercial Blvd and NW 15 Ave to attend the festival..
The Grace Jamaican Festival is on Sunday, November 10, at Miramar Regional Park. Eventgoers can ride on route 28 to Miramar Parkway. Visit: www.broward.org/BCT or call: 954-357-8400
Pigs Do Fly Productions
To Present Norm Foster’s The Long Weekend
Pigs Do Fly Productions will present Canadian Playwright Norm Foster’s The Long Weekend, a comedy of manners filled with numerous plot twists and a hilariously tangled web of truths, deceptions, and surprises. The production will run from November 1st - November 24th at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale.
“Norm Foster’s plays definitely resonate with our audiences,” says Pigs Do Fly Executive Producer Ellen Wacher.
“This is the third one of his plays we have produced. They are clever, and funny, but they also examine life and circumstances in ways that ring true – whether he’s analyzing established relationships or observing emerging or fluctuating ones.
“His characters are often over the age of 50, which is great for us – that’s our target audience and that ties in perfectly with our mission statement.” She continues.
“But - and this is a wonderful caveat – we have found over the past 8 and a half years that as our audiences have grown, they have diversified; it’s been so great to see younger people at the theater and enjoying what we’re offering. As I often say, good theater has no age limit!”
As The Long Weekend opens Max and Wynn are preparing to show off their beautiful new summer home to their best friends, Roger and Abby. What is meant to be a relaxing holiday weekend turns into a battle of wits as their pasts catch up with them, the gloves come off and old scores are settled in comedic fashion.
The production will be directed by Christopher Michaels: “The Long Weekend had me in absolute stitches on the subway while I gave it a first read,” Michaels says. “It is hilariously wellwritten and all I could think was how much it felt like a sitcom: unit set, key cast, set-ups and punchlines, the overall
pacing... And there was the challenge of putting a large country home in the intimate space at Empire Stage.”
Michaels is making his Pigs Do Fly directorial debut; this is his second South Florida theater directing credit, following his acclaimed production of Thrill Me: The Leopold and Loeb Story at Wilton Manors’ Island City Stage last season.
The Long Weekend cast consists of 2024 Carbonell Award Nominee and Silver Palm Award-Winner Karen Stephens as Abby, along with Janice Hamilton as Wynn, Alan Goodman as Roger, and
Michael Coppola as Max. Norm Foster is considered Canada’s most produced playwright. An extremely prolific writer, frequently referred to as the Canadian Neil Simon, Foster has had more than fifty plays produced on professional stages. His plays are known for their look into ‘the everyday tribulations of life.’
The Stage Manager for The Long
Weekend is Larry Buzzeo. Dean Landhuis is the show’s Scenic Designer, David Hart will do the Sound Design, and Preston Bircher will create the Lighting Design and serve as Technical Director. Costumes are by Saul Mendoza and MNM Theatre Company will build the sets. Jessica Kaschube is the Company Manager, and Patrick Vida will handle the Box Office.
Tickets for The Long Weekend are $45 and are available online at: www.pigsdoflyproductions.com. Or by calling: (954) 678-1496. Performances are on Fridays at 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 5:00 p.m. All performances will take place at Empire Stage, 1140 North Flagler Drive, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304.

America Is Falling Apart
Our National Priorities Are in Dire Need of Restructuring
By John & Nisha
The devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene makes this failure by the government to put the needs of the American people first painfully evident.
“You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.” — Bob Dylan
A water main breaks every two minutes somewhere in the U.S., resulting in contaminated drinking supplies and boil water notices.
One out of three bridges in the U.S. needs repair, endangering hundreds of millions of commuters. More than 42,000 bridges across the country, carrying about 167 million vehicles each day, are in disrepair.
It is estimated that 300 million people could face power outages across the United States between 2024 and 2028, due in large part to widespread power grid failures. No wonder U.S. Infrastructure received a C- on the Infrastructure Report Card.
America is falling apart.
Collapsing bridges, buckling roads, overheated railways, deteriorating power lines, contaminated water lines, outdated public transportation, overtaxed power grids, aging ports and waterways, unsafe tunnels and highways, and spotty or insufficient telecommunications assets are all becoming frequent hallmarks of the American way of life.

When all is said and done, the breadand-circus distractions and sleight-ofhand political theater being trotted out in order to keep Americans distracted, deluded, amused, and insulated from the government’s steady encroachments on our freedoms adds nothing of real value to the lives of the average American.
It’s time to fix what’s broken in this

This is about the plight of the American people who continue to be treated like a permanent underclass.

We are seeing this play out before our eyes. The government is destabilizing the economy, destroying the national Infrastructure through neglect and a lack of resources, and turning taxpayer dollars into blood money with its endless wars, drone strikes and mounting death tolls.
This is exactly the scenario President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned would happen if we allowed the military-industrial complex to wage war, exhaust our

country. For starters, we need an overhaul of the nation’s Infrastructure.
University study shows, we now live in an oligarchy that is “of the rich, by the rich and for the rich.”
If the nation is woefully unprepared to deal with climate disasters such as floods, hurricanes, wildfires, and droughts, despite the hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars that have been pledged to shore up the nation’s infrastructure problems, it is because politicians across the political spectrum have failed us.
The devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene makes this failure by the government to put the needs of the American people first painfully evident. Entire towns are under water. Roadways have collapsed or are otherwise impassable. Potable water is scarce. More than 1.5 million households are still without power. Clearly, our national priorities need to be re-examined.
While the politicians play partisan games with our tax dollars, the nation’s critical Infrastructure—both the physical foundations of the nation and the figurative foundations of our freedoms—continues to be neglected and deprioritized in

In excess of 2 million people live without running water or basic plumbing. For too long, the American public has had to carry on while these deficiencies have gone unattended. The political will has been weak or inattentive, the rewards too far removed from electoral advantage.”
In other words, the politicians who dance to the tune of the oligarchic elite aren’t motivated to do anything about our failing Infrastructure because they get nothing out of it: no votes, no money, no power.
This isn’t about whether the Republicans or Democrats have better policies.
Indeed, both parties’ priorities are disconcertingly alike: both parties support endless war, engage in out-of-control spending, ignore the citizenry’s basic
When a country spends close to $10 Billion to select what is, for all intents and purposes, a glorified homecoming king or queen to occupy the White House, while 38 million of its people live in poverty, and nearly 7 million Americans are out of work, and more than 600,000 Americans are homeless, that’s a country whose priorities are out of step with the needs of its people.
Overhauling the nation’s Infrastructure will take a significant amount of money, which won’t happen as long as the U.S. Government continues to fund the military industrial complex and its voracious appetite for endless wars.
James Madison was right: “No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.” As Madison explained, “Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes…
resources and dictate our national priorities. We failed to heed Eisenhower’s warning. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, this is how tyranny rises and freedom falls.
If we are to have any hope of restoring both the structural and freedom foundations of this nation, we’ll need to start by getting our priorities in order, and that means focusing on what really matters: shoring up our battered Bill of Rights and investing in the American homeland.

Witness The Impossible Magic & Mayhem - LIVE At The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center
Do you believe that it’s possible to actually die laughing? If so, Dizzy might be the most dangerous man alive. From the celebrated Apollo Theatre in London’s West End to the iconic Sydney Opera House, Darren “Dizzy” Partridge has been delighting audiences around the globe for more than a decade. An accomplished comedy magician and cirque variety performer, Dizzy is a regular headlining act on the luxury liners of both Celebrity and Norwegian Cruise Lines. He has also been featured as The Trickster in the largest touring magic show in the world, The Illusionists. Dizzy’s wild com bination of magic, physical comedy, and theatrical thiev ery, delivered with mischie vous British charm, leaves his audiences both spellbound and gasping for breath. With three different shows to choose from, you are guar anteed an experience they will not believe and will never forget.
As a kid growing up in Coventry, England, he had no idea that one day, he would be performing in cirque shows around the world and making a living with magic.
Dizzy told us, “I am some times asked if I always wanted to be a magician and to be honest, the short answer is no – but I always followed my interests. I started out in martial arts; I just loved the physicality and athleticism it required. My favorite moves were the ones that involved spinning and kicking and jumping, and those movements would soon morph into a love of breakdancing. I taught myself all the power moves, and even though I didn’t have an ounce of rhythm, I loved doing all of the acrobatic tricks. Believe it or not, those tricks landed me a gig as Sir Francis Drake in a stunt show in Majorca, Spain.”
During this time Dizzy spent several seasons doing backflips and high falls and sword fights with my fellow swashbucklers. When his ten ure as a professional pirate eventually came to an end (actually due to a fight with Blackbeard; that’s a whole other story), he wandered into a cirque audition back in London and blew away the casting directors with everything he had learned. As the other applicants were fussing about which music they wanted, he ran up the wall, did a backflip, and when he landed, he had everyone’s attention. As it turns out, in some careers, bouncing off the walls is a good thing. He was hired and moved to Myrtle Beach to work for Le Grand Cirque and was exposed to a myriad of different performers, including some influential magicians (who would eventually become his teachers), and everything just clicked into place. One of those influential magicians was Janna Roukhmanova – she is a world-
