Research Shows Parents Transition Their Child’s Seat Too Soon
“Parents are often eager to turn their young children forward-facing in their car seats too soon.” Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA –The Auto Club Group During National Child Passenger Safety Week (Sept. 15-21), AAA and the National Safety Council (NSC) are releasing a safety alert for parents. A new AAA analysis of five years of government crash data reveals a concerning trend: child seat and booster use declines after a child turns three, despite the continued need for these safety devices. In Florida, 25.3%
of parents and caregivers transitioned their children to a booster seat too soon and 93.5% transitioned to an adult seatbelt too soon. This is alarming, as over four million children aged 11 and under were involved in car crashes, from 2018 to 2022, resulting in 547,000 injuries and nearly 3,000 fatalities.
On Friday, November 1st at 8:00 p.m. the New World School of the Arts presents its annual performance featuring the outstanding New World Dance Ensemble @ Aventura in a dynamic program of the work of today’s most interesting and evocative choreographers. Miami’s New World School of the Arts Dance Program is conservatory-based, grounded in classical ballet and incorporating dances of different cultures and newer forms.

According to the National Digital Car Seat Check Form (NDCF) database, of the car seats inspected in 2023, 74% were not used properly or incorrectly installed. The three most common misuses were: Car seat installation is too loose.
“We know parents and caregivers go to great lengths to protect their children,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA –The Auto Club Group. “Yet, even with the best intentions, parents may unknowingly endanger their children by putting them in the wrong seat or not securing them properly. Good Or Sweet?
How Do You Like Your Year?!
Students from Hebrew School are taught Shofar history and tradition.
“Shana Tova Umetuka”“May you have a good and sweet year” is what we typically wish each other in the month leading up to the Jewish New Year, and I bet you’ve always wondered why we give a double wish, that the year should be both good and sweet. If it’s good, isn’t it sweet? It’s got to be more than just poetic.
The Talmud teaches us that
everything that happens in the world is for the good. And although many times it seems far from good, you should know that ultimately it somehow is for the good. We therefore wish each other, that not just should you have a good year, but also a sweet one. A year that is not just ultimately for the good, but rather one where the good is obvious to all. A year that is deliciously sweet! Many give each other Tegalach, Honey Cookies or Honey Cake - known as Lekach. In fact the Chassidic custom is to

The harness is too loose when securing a child in a car seat. When used correctly, car seats, booster seats, and seat belts protect young passengers. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, child restraints reduce fatalities by 71% for infants younger than one and by 54% for children 1 to 4 years old in passenger cars.
Child Seat Advice
• Find the right car seat. Types of seats vary based on their age, weight and height. Visit: https:// www.nhtsa.gov/campaign/right-seat
• Install your car seat correctly. Review instructions and video tutorials.
• Get your car seat inspected. To find a car seat inspection provider near you visit: https:// www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-andbooster-seats#installation-help-inspection
• Ensure safety belts fit properly every time. The placement of the safety harness or seat belt can be critical.
• Register your car seat. Sign up for recall notices to receive safety updates.
“Parents are often eager to turn their young children forward-facing in their car seats too soon,” Jenkins said. “However, due to their underdeveloped bodies, young children below the age of two who ride forward-facing are at a greater risk of head, neck and spinal cord injuries if involved in a collision.”
Which seat should I use?
If you’re not sure when to move your child to the next type of car seat, look to these stages:
• Rear-facing safety seat: Children should stay rear-facing as long as possible, up to the limits of the car safety seat. This includes almost all children under 2.
• Forward-facing safety seat, with harness: Many seats can take children up to 60 pounds or more. When they are ready and exceed the seat’s limits, move to a belt-positioning booster seat.
• Belt-positioning booster seat: Use until the vehicle’s lap and shoulder seat belts fit properly— generally when children are at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall (usually 8 to 12 years old).
• Front seat versus back seat: All children younger than 13 should be restrained in the rear seats. Young children riding in the front seat can be injured or even killed if an air bag opens.
Florida Law on Child Seats
Florida’s law on this subject does not reflect best practices. Currently, children riding in motor vehicles are required to be in a safety seat until their 6th birthday. However, AAA feels that law is not strong enough and recommends that children use a safety seat until they are at least 4’9” tall and pass the “Seat Belt Fit Test.” “Seat belts are designed for adults, not children,” Jenkins said. “A seat belt that does not fit correctly, could cause injury in the event of a crash.”
Seat belts are about height not age.
Check the following before moving your child to an adult seat belt:
• Your child’s knees bend at the edge of the seat when the back and bottom are against the vehicle seat back. Feet should touch the floor for comfort and stability.
• The vehicle lap belt fits snugly across the hips or upper thighs.
• The shoulder belt fits across the shoulder and chest, NOT across the face or neck.
• If your child does not meet all three of these conditions, they should continue using a car seat or booster seat until they get taller.
According to AAA’s analysis, the latest government data reflects a need for parents to ensure they use the correct child restraint system for each growth phase. Every child deserves protection -
Nearly 4 in 10 (37%) children aged 7-11 killed in a car crash were completely unrestrained. For the youngest children, aged 0-3, 1 in 4 (26%) who were killed were unrestrained. Parents and caregivers are good at getting expert help when children are less than one year old or before birth, but they do not always come back for adjustments as the child ages. According to the NDCF, Child Passenger Safety Technicians inspect about five times the number of rear-facing car seats compared to forward-facing car seats, and 83.5% of those were not used correctly. It’s about height, not age - Children are often transitioned out of the appropriate car seats before it is safe. According to the NDCF, 24.9% of children move to booster seats too soon, and 93.6% transition to a seat belt too soon. Many parents may not know that seat belt fit is more about their child’s height than age. Based on their size, some children older than ten years old may benefit from using a booster seat. Most booster seats accommodate children up to a height of 57 inches. Check online virtually - Without local resources, a child’s car seat can be checked virtually through an online meeting with National Safety Council staff. Find child passenger safety resources by state, including how to get a car seat checked, occupant protection laws, and answers to car seat questions. To learn more, visit: https://www.cpsboard.org/carseat-safety/find-cps-resources-in-yourstate/
“AAA is dedicated to ensuring children are safe while traveling in a car,” continued Jenkins. “ACG is proud to partner with Safe Kids Worldwide to educate families and provide safety devices, car and booster seats, and bike helmets, to communities that may have not had access to these resources.”
Methodology
The statistics on child restraint use in car crashes are based on data compiled
by the U.S. Department of Transportation and analyzed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Statistics are based on children riding as passengers in cars, minivans, vans, pickup trucks, and SUVs involved in police-reported crashes between 2018 and 2022. For more, visit: AAAFoundation.org or find a AAA office near you at: www.AAA.com
In partnership with AAA and the National Safety Council, Westat researchers examined data submitted to the National Digital Car Seat Check Form (NDCF), a national database of detailed information on car seat inspections performed by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs). The final dataset used for analysis represents all 50 states and includes 71,808 car seat inspections performed between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023.

know that the theme of honey throughout this season symbolizes the sweet year we all yearn for. But why specifically honey? Why not sugar, splenda or any other sweetener?
For starters, Israel was blessed to be a land flowing with milk and honey! Eating honey, wherever we may be, reminds us of our ancient homeland and our deep connection to Israel. (We hope and pray for peace in Israel, and that G-d protects its people from any harm. May we get back the remainder of the hostages alive and may our soldiers come home safely to their families without the need for any war).
Have you ever seen an expiration date on honey? Honey can last for a really long time! A quick search on the internet will
Many times there are people that get blessings. They win the lottery or stumble across a treasure. But the blessings unfortunately don’t always last and all their money can disappear as fast as it appeared or even worse, break families and friends apart. On Rosh Hashanah we pray that we not only get a blessed year, but that the blessings last.
Furthermore, honey can be used as a preservative. When Adam and Eve, whose birthdays we celebrate on Rosh Hashanah, were created, they were commanded to work the earth and to guard it. To protect it and all that it contains. To preserve the world and constantly make it a better place.
I wish each and every one of you a Shana Tova Umetuka! May you and your families be blessed with a Happy and

Thank You For Your Service
Airlines Offer Many Perks And Discounts For
The Military
Community
By Tim Kinsella
I served for 33 years in the United States Military. As the former commanding officer of the Navy’s largest aviation training installation at Naval Air Station Pensacola, I know firsthand the deep relationships between military aviation and our airline industry.
The airline industry has been one of the leading employers for America’s service members, employing more than 50,000 veterans. I’ve been fortunate to fly all over the world for both military and personal reasons, but no matter where I travel, I always know I’ll be treated with kindness and dignity when I fly on a U.S. airline.
U.S. airlines offer discounts, waive fees, and provide many other perks for active duty and veterans alike. To make the most of these opportunities, activeduty personnel and veterans should check out the military benefits airlines offer before finalizing travel arrangements.
Discounted fares and vacation packages. Many airlines offer discounted fares for travel itineraries -- including leisure and vacation.
Alaska, American, Hawaiian, JetBlue, and United all offer reduced fares for the military community through a partnership with WeSalute+ -- a benefits and discount program for active duty and veterans, and their immediate families. Southwest also offers lower fares not available to the public if you call ahead.
Several airlines even offer discounts on vacation packages. Delta Vacations offers military discounts up to $200 on a flightand-hotel package. American Airlines, meanwhile, offers 10% discounts for vacation packages through WeSalute+.
Check extra bags for free (and bring your pets too!)
Most airlines waive baggage fees for members of the military community. Alaska, American, and JetBlue offer up to five free checked bags per flight, for example, depending on whether the flight is for duty or leisure.
Many airlines also let members of the
military community ship their pets -- a benefit not typically offered to the general public. This is something we took full advantage of when we were stationed overseas in Belgium. Active-duty servicemembers who are relocating or traveling on-orders should check airline policies to see if their four-legged friends can fly for free. Semper Fido!
An enhanced airport experience
Airports can get chaotic, especially around the holidays. Members of the military community, however, may be eligible for a little extra comfort, convenience, and relaxation.
Most airlines offer priority boarding to members of the military and their families. Early boarding offers a chance to secure
overhead storage for carry-ons and get settled into a seat before the single-file procession of other passengers starts down the narrow aisle. We sure appreciated this when we were moving overseas with two small children, two cats, and more bags than a discount shopper on black Friday!
Military travelers flying with American, United, or Alaska Airlines can enjoy airline clubs and lounges before boarding, depending on the airport and availability. Whether it’s to hang with the family, find a nook to read, grab a snack, or grab a catnap, these lounges offer a quiet space to relax before boarding.
Know what deals, discounts, and perks are available before you book!
Traveling can be stressful for anyone.
To relieve stress and save both time and money, members of the military community should make a point of looking into the discounts, perks, and amenities available to them before they book. Our airlines offer these discounts because they appreciate and value the sacrifices our servicemembers and their families make every day -- something a great number of airline employees have experienced as veterans themselves.

Exquisitely filmed in the Belgian countryside, this profound story resonates on multiple levels: a balm for those whose initial queer experiences were traumatic, a mirror for today’s LGBTQ+ youth, and a hopeful message for parents of future generations. An afterparty at the Dania Improv will take place immediately following the screening.
This year’s Centerpiece Film screening at 7:30 p.m. on October 24th at Savor Cinema will be the East Coast premiere of Hammarskjöld - Fight For Peace (Sweden, 2024), a speculative biopic about Swedish UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, the anti-colonialist, allegedly queer diplomat who died under mysterious circumstances during the Cold War while trying to bring peace to The Congo. The film is directed by Per Fly.
Back by popular demand is the festival’s Latin Spotlight featuring critically acclaimed men’s and women’s films set to take place on October 25th at Silverspot Cinema Miami. The fall edition’s selections are The Astronaut Lovers (Los Amantes Astronautas) (Argentina/Spain, 2024) and the North American premiere of The Muleteer (La Arriera) (Mexico, 2024).
Directed by Marco Berger, The Astronaut Lovers is a breezy comedy about Pedro and Maxi, childhood friends reuniting as young men who fall in love and comically try to hide it from family and friends. In The Muleteer, Director Isabel Cristina Fregoso presents a compelling 1930’s narrative about daring teenage Emilia who ventures from the ranch where she grew up to find her biological father. Riding her horse through the mountains, where she pretends to be a young muleteer, she discovers a different world that leads her to find her destiny.
Additional selections of note include High Tide (United States, 2024) featuring Brazilian star Marco Pigossi at the heart of a moving tale of a gay immigrant in Provincetown navigating the gig economy after an unexpected breakup. The film also stars Marisa Tomei, Mya Taylor, and Bill Irwin; Drive Back Home (Canada, 2024), a brotherly road trip drama taking place in 1970 starring Alan Cumming; All Shall Be Well (Hong Kong, 2024), Director Ray Yueng’s Teddy Award-Winning film exploring family dynamics, unraveling relationships and the complexities of Hong Kong’s inheritance laws; the AwardWinning Pet Shop Days (USA/Italy/ Mexico/UK, 2023), Director Olmo Schnabel’s gritty throwback to American independent cinema with a riveting portrait of lost young men seeking
connection featuring fantastic performances (including Willem Dafoe), raw emotion, and propulsive pacing; and the documentaries Linda Perry: Let It Die Here (United States, 2024) and Sapir (Israel, 2024), an engrossing portrait of the world’s first Professional League Transgender Football Referee, Sapir Berman.
Focusing on local LGBTQ+ filmmaking talent, OUTshine has curated a new South Florida Shorts program and will present its Filmmaker Panel during the festival run.

OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival’s fall edition closes at 6:00 p.m. at Regal Cinemas South Beach with the film LAYLA (UK, 2024), a love letter to the queer community. Written and directed by Amrou Al-Kadhi, the film focuses on Layla, a struggling Arab non-binary drag queen whose confident façade hides their desperate desire for love. When Layla’s performance at a belittling corporate Pride event turns into a transgressive takedown, they are surprised to catch the eye of marketing executive Max, whose attentions sweep Layla off their feet. As Layla starts to alter who they are in order to keep Max’s interest, they both must face uncomfortable truths. Immediately following, a celebratory Closing Night Party will take place on historic Lincoln Road.
