BANISHES THE CHAOS OF MODERN LIFE FOR ANOTHER THAT IS GROUNDED IN A ROMANTIC VIEW OF THE PAST. . . HE ASKS US TO FOLLOW HIM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE TO A FANTASTICAL PLACE THAT IS JUST BEYOND OUR REACH, BUT ONE INTENDED TO INSPIRE US TO BE BETTER VERSIONS OF OURSELVES.”

EDITOR’S WELCOME

Celebrating a milestone, the Ketchum Arts Festival turns 30.And more art in July includes the Sun Valley Museum of Art’s (SVMoA) reopening of its Ketchum headquarters with an incredible new exhibition showcasing works by Valley art collectors, curated by SVMoA Executive Director Jennifer Wells Green. Get ready to enjoy the newly remodeled space filled with incredible works of art. And to come, Trailing of the Sheep Festival announces an August farm-to-table Warhol-inspired fundraiser.

ABUNDANT SUMMER

July in Sun Valley, Idaho, is go-time for summer. Whether it’s al fresco dining on patios and roof decks, dressing up for events and gatherings, gearing up for an adventure, or just being wrapped in a blanket and sitting by an evening outdoor fire until your eyes close, it’s a special time. Many memories with friends, families, and loved ones are created at this time of year because summer in Sun Valley is a unique, cherished experienced.

The July list of events and happenings is long and exciting. To begin, SVPN ’s cover story on the LA-based contemporary dance company BODYTRAFFIC is about a new dance company to come to Sun Valley, which will hold a Valleywide summer residency ending with performances at The Argyros. We welcome this exciting cultural entity to the area. And there’s more. SVPN Magazine is excited to include Gilman Contemporary’s Rodney Smith retrospective, Rodney Smith: Leap of Faith, on display June 13-July 25. The exhibition celebrates the artist’s 45-year career and the J. Paul Getty Museum curator.

With great enthusiasm, The Community Library opens the brand-new Wood River Museum of History and Culture this July. Expanding the library’s connection to the Valley and visitors, the new museum will be an essential regional history asset. It is an exciting time for The Community Library and for the region to have a unique history museum with interactive exhibitions, a gift shop, and much more to educate us all about the place we live in.

With a list of writers and presenters few events can rival, the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference at the Sun Valley Resort is a must-do, offering free lawn access and single-ticket events. It will not disappoint—featuring fascinating topics for everyone, not just readers and writers. Also on the summer event list, check out Idaho Basecamp’s fly fishing competition benefiting 5th grade outdoor programs. It’s family fun for all.

More in the SVPN Calendar, Arts Etc, and Now Showing sections include new exhibitions for July’s Gallery Walk on Friday, July 7. At Broschofsky Galleries is a show by photographer David Yarrow. Yarrow will be present for an artist reception on Wednesday, July 19.

In our Wellness section, read about the importance of the Gretchen Palmer Patient Assistance Fund through St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation to support Wood River Valley patients fighting cancer and other serious illnesses. At Zenergy Health Club & Spa, check out cold water plunging at Zenergy’s newest plunge pool, and learn how CENTER addresses autoimmune struggles.

For summer fun, read about the new Devoto Gelato shop in Hailey serving Argentinian and Italian gelato, and also discover the delectable restaurants and dining establishments in the Sun Valley Restaurant Association Dining Guide, updated for summer.

View our incredible property listings to make Sun Valley your home away from home or your forever residence. There are exciting happenings for July, and SVPN Magazine has you covered.

Have a great time out there!

CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF IDAHO ART

Ketchum Arts Festival presents July showcase

As summer approaches, prepare to immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the annual Ketchum Arts Festival (KAF), a much-anticipated gem in the Sun Valley summer experience. This cherished event will bring together a diverse array of Idaho’s local artists and food vendors against the breathtaking backdrop of Sun Valley’s Bald Mountain. This year, the festival will celebrate the significant milestone of its 25th anniversary, promising a weekend of artistic excellence and community spirit from July 14 through 16.

Located in Festival Meadows on Sun Valley Road, the KAF will display a stunning showcase of the creative output of over 100 Idaho artists. Local food and refreshing brews will offer fuel to folks as they spend the day weaving through vibrant vendor tents.

The KAF promises kid-friendly fun as well, offering a Kids’ Activity Tent where children aged four and up can be checked in and left while their parents explore. Free supervision is provided, along with activities including painting, bubbles, bracelet stringing, and other crafts. And if you’re more of a dog mom or dad, feel free to bring along Fido as long as they stay leashed.

Twenty-five years ago, the festival’s humble mission was to “offer local artists an earning opportunity while enriching the community artistically.” Now, the essence of that mission holds true, and what began as a dozen vendors has blossomed into a celebration for featured artists. This year’s roster spans

artistic generations. While at least 11 tents are returning for the 25th time, three new teenage artists are expected to make their community debut this year. Festival organizer Lisa Horton emphasized the KAF’s intention of providing a steady marketplace for novice and experienced local artists alike.

“When you’ve never done a craft show before it is a real puzzler on what to do,” Horton says. “We have always mentored those people. The reason we do not jury Blaine County artists is that we want anyone who makes art to try it out on the marketplace.”

44 svpn- mag.c om

Art browsing at the KAF is intimate and allows art patrons to go home not only with a piece of art but also with the story of the artist. And in a tight-knit community like Sun Valley, prioritizing a mutualistic economy is essential for maintaining a healthy financial ecosystem.

Festival Meadows can be easily accessed from the free Mountain Rides blue route Bitterroot bus stop, or with a brief walk on the bike path from Ketchum or Sun Valley.

“It’s kind of like going down the aisles of Atkinsons’ at Christmas,” Horton says. “It’s like one big party.” 

ST. LUKE’S PRESENTS AWARD

Nurse Jennifer Rablin receives Carl A. Gray Memorial Award for Nursing Excellence

The St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation’s Board of Directors and the Harvey Gray Family awarded registered nurse Jennifer Rablin, RN, ADN, this year’s Carl A. Gray Memorial Award for nursing excellence. Rablin’s staff and peers celebrated their elected nominee’s prestigious honor at The Mint in Hailey, recognizing her skill, compassion, and exceptional dedication to her nursing career.

After nearly 15 years of service to St. Luke’s Wood River, Rablin currently works as an Assistant Nurse Manager in the Medical/Surgical, Mother/Baby, and Emergency Department for night shifts. While her career at St. Luke’s began as a Medical/Surgical Nurse, Rablin’s commitment to her career began long before as a line chef, where she financed her way through nursing school.

Through her tenure as a health care professional, Rablin has become a model and a comfort to her staff and patients. Described by her peers as “a thoughtful, compassionate, and skilled nurse with a wonderful calm nature,” Rablin continues to be a staple presence of exceptional demeanor within the hustle and bustle of a hospital environment. Her support extends beyond patient care, maintaining strong relationships with her employees through her gift for teaching and managerial excellence.

“It is wonderful to honor the work that our nurses do every day,” says Chief Development Officer for St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation Megan Tanous. “Our nurses take on so many roles, never shying away from responsibility, stepping up to help their peers and to advocate for their patients. They exhibit compassion and a desire to

continually learn and strive for the highest level of safety and quality in everything they do.”

The Gray Family established the award to honor the devoted Sun Valley Ski Club member Carl A. Gray. Additional awards of distinction honored staff who upheld St. Luke’s core values. Scott Kelly was recognized for his integrity as an Admin Supervisor, Hadley Steel was commended for her Compassion in SLWR Internal Medicine, Janet Barton was honored for her Accountability as a nurse in the Mother/ Baby unit, and Jennifer Merrick was honored for the respect she bestows in the PACU.

The annual Carl A. Gray Memorial Award is bestowed based on peer nominations, and thus the presentation of the awards provided the hardworking staff of St. Luke’s a valued opportunity to honor and celebrate one another.

There is a benefit that comes with embracing urban sensibility and sophistication. It reminds us that there is more “out there” beyond the physical and social boundaries that often exist in an idyllic town like Sun Valley.

With its riveting performances and truly unique style, contemporary dance company BODYTRAFFIC delivers this sensibility and aims to foster connections through a sense of universal purpose. Based in Los Angeles and named for the perpetual movement and dynamic cultural intersections of its home, BODYTRAFFIC will bring its urban edge and

contemporary aesthetic to Sun Valley for an inaugural ten-day residency beginning July 5. The multi-faceted residency culminates in a weekend of performances at the Argyros Performing Arts Center and will showcase brandnew work from choreographer Matthew Neenan.

Bringing BODYTRAFFIC to Sun Valley realizes a vision for longtime resident and BODYTRAFFIC President Gillian Wynn. For over 50 years, Gillian has called the Wood River Valley home and has been an avid supporter of the arts. So when her partner, BODYTRAFFIC’s Founder and Artistic Director, Tina Finkelman Berkett, brought up the idea of a summer residency in Sun Valley, Gillian immediately picked up the phone and called her good friend, the Argyros Performing Arts Center Executive Director Casey Mott.

“It’s a match made in heaven for me,” says Gillian. “I have watched Sun Valley evolve over five decades, and there is a real need for diversity and for creating a voice that speaks to a growing community.” She adds, “Art speaks from the soul, and it speaks to the soul. It touches on issues, ideas, and history that resonate with many people. But it also leaves room for interpretation and personal connection. BODYTRAFFIC has an expanded perspective and draws broad universal appeal. It is something Sun Valley has never seen before, and I am confident that everyone will respond strongly to it because it’s what’s been missing.”

But there is even more to this match made in heaven. The need to be in nature is essential to Gillian, and in her multiverse, two things she loves dearly–Sun Valley and BODYTRAFFIC–weave together in a beautiful, crystalline web. “We live in a time when we are facing real existential crises,” says Gillian. “We need mental breaks. Like nature, art offers a respite, a sanctuary. It is where I go to escape. Dance, in particular, is my portal to a view of a better world, or at least a better version of humanity.”

The ultimate goal is to make Sun Valley the summer home for BODYTRAFFIC, and as President of the company, Gillian is doing all she can to gain the support of the community. “To fully invest and sustain my commitment, I must love the work and the product. When I am engaged, I am all-in. The first time I saw this company, it was love at first sight. I have seen every caliber of dance from all over the world and no other company has had the effect that BODYTRAFFIC has on me.”

Gillian adds, “I believe in the power of dance to transform and to heal, to inspire, ignite, and provoke, to make life worth living. I think we are magnetically drawn to the arts because they feed our souls, and we are desperate for this

kind of nourishment. When you watch a BODYTRAFFIC performance, you don’t just get to escape for a moment; hopefully, the moment stays with you. The place you go is within you, and you can always go back.”

BODYTRAFFIC is the manifestation of the life dreams and goals of its Artistic Director, Tina Finkelman Berkett. From one of the company’s first performances in her synagogue’s catering hall, when 700 people were in attendance, Tina understood that there was a need.

“After five years in existence, we hit a major tipping point. In 2012, we recieved invitations to perform at The Joyce in New York City and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. It was our launching moment, and we were prepared,” she says. “Since then, I wished for the company to find a second home, another community that can rally behind and take pride in BODYTRAFFIC’s impact.”

Since its 2016 Hollywood Bowl debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and being established as company-in-residence at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, BODYTRAFFIC’s accomplishments have been plentiful. During the Obama Administration, BODYTRAFFIC was chosen as U.S. Cultural Ambassadors to Israel and Jordan through DanceMotion USA, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department that sought to engage international audiences through educational opportunities, cultural exchange, and performance.

“While serving our coutnry, we had a life-changing experience working hands-on with communities that had special needs. We saw that dance can truly heal people’s lives and help them feel seen, connected, and a part of something,” says Tina. “We shifted our focus to do more of this work.”

BODYTRAFFIC also served as a cultural ambassadors of the United States in South Korea, Algeria, and Indonesia. The company has toured extensively, including visits to Moscow and St. Petersburg for the CONTEXT Diana Vishneva Festival and The Hague for The Holland Dance Festival.

Bringing BODYTRAFFIC to the Wood River Valley with a fully developed, multi-faceted program is essential to Tina and a gift to the dancers in the company. “Creating work while slowing down our pace is an amazing opportunity,” says Tina. “Hopefully, we can draw from the surrounding areas and provide access to our work while we enjoy the community and create more balance in our lives.”

BODYTRAFFIC features a range of dance styles and traditions. Working with new choreographers helps the company evolve and grow. “The audience will see very different pieces with very different styles,” says Tina. “Some might be more balletic while others are driven more by hip-hop. We have a new piece we are working on now that will be premiered in the fall, which explores Afro-Cuban forms. Our shows are a celebration of our dancers’ versatility.”

“BODYTRAFFIC’ is commited to sharing a real love for dance,” says Tina. “It’s about bringing people together to share in the joy of it. You want to be in the theater to watch BODYTRAFFIC live because you leave feeling more alive. There’s something groovy and fun about our work, and people feel inspired to go home, put on music, and shake it up.”

THE BODYTRAFFIC RESIDENCY

Through the guidance of Hilary Neely, Footlight Dance Centre’s Artistic Director, BODYTRAFFIC created an educational program that will connect to the area’s dancers.

“During the first week of the program, BODYTRAFFIC will open up its rehearsal process,” says BODYTRAFFIC Education and Outreach Manager Julie Opiel. “During this time, we will host a small group of local pre-professional students who will shadow BODYTRAFFIC’s dancer.”

Valley has never seen before, and I am confident that everyone will respond strongly to it because it’s what’s been missing.”

This free program was designed for a pre-selected group of dancers to have the unique opportunity to learn from BODYTRAFFIC’s highly skilled dancers in the studio during the choreographic residency.

BODYTRAFFIC’s masterclasses are for young dancers throughout Southern Idaho. These classes will take place at Footlight Dance Centre on July 10 and 11, 5:30-7pm, and will cost $20. No preregistration is required.

In partnership with Higher Ground and the Wood River Valley YMCA, BODYTRAFFIC will conduct a two-day workshop focusing on the transformational and healing power of movement. This workshop will take place on July 12 and 13.

“We believe that everybody should feel embodied and have an experience through dance and movement,” says Julie. “Partnering with Higher Ground and the YMCA is very special to us, and we’re so excited to work with these exceptional organizations.”

Julie adds, “Addressing mental health is a crucial part of BODYTRAFFIC’s mission. The capability dance has to help people find new ways of self-expression is extraordinary. Dance is a community-building art form, and that’s a big part of what we do—bringing people together to move together.” 

WOOD RIVER MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND CULTURE MAKES ITS DEBUT

Preserving the Wood River Valley’s history has been in the hands of The Community Library for a very long time. Since acquiring the Ketchum/Sun Valley Ski and Heritage Museum in Ketchum’s Forest Service Park (across from the Limelight Hotel Ketchum) in 2014, the Library has been able to assess and understand the value of preserving the Valley’s history and its iconic collections, from silver mining to sheep ranching to skiing, including the long history of Shoshone-Bannock peoples and an ongoing history of immigration.

The Community Library is the go-to resource for those who may not know the Wood River Valley’s rich history. Now it incorporates and offers a museum dedicated to the region’s history and culture. What was once the Regional History Museum in Forest Service Park has been updated and reimagined in a new location with a new moniker.

“The richness and resilience of a community depends on its capacity to tend and tell its many stories,” The Community Library’s executive director Jenny Emery Davidson says. “It is the joyful work of the Wood River Museum of History and Culture to connect people with those stories through exhibits that include artifacts, interpretive panels, audio recordings, video, and original art.”

Making a museum possible is mainly due to the Jeanne Rodger Lane Center for Regional History archives at The Community Library, considered significant for a public library. It’s a special department, especially since American history is very connected to the area. “The past library directors prioritized the regional history library,” Regional History Director Mary Tyson says. “The department started in 1982, and before then, there was an oral history project that began in the late 1970s as there was a big interest in documenting the history in the Valley.”

The regional history archives are an essential piece of the Wood River Valley. It’s accessible, and it’s now even more so with the new museum space and the ability to showcase an incredible past that informs our present. The museum will have expanded hours and dedicated staff members to encourage public visits, school programs, and a range of educational activities. Regional History Librarian Kelley Moulton, who has worked on preparing exhibition spaces with several staff members, says, “The Museum will serve everyone who walks in. It will make a strong connection to the community and visitors.”

Tyson adds, “The Museum will provide more efficiencies and encourage greater foot traffic.” Tyson and the regional

history staff team have curated exhibits that invite interaction and diverse perspectives on historic objects. Visitors will be able to type on vintage typewriters like Hemingway used, open the doors of a Cabinet of Wonders, and add their own stories to one of the galleries.

The Wood River Museum of History and Culture, located on the corner of Fourth and Walnut Streets in Ketchum, is a free resource for all ages. Its proximity to The Community Library creates a library campus along with the Gold Mine Thrift and Gold Mine Consign stores, which fund the private

library along with grants and donors, as The Community Library is not a publicly funded entity.

Creating an experience where everyone can understand, learn, and revel in the Valley’s history, the Museum is a welcome addition to downtown Ketchum. It will include an array of permanent and rotating exhibitions and a gift shop offering unique items related to the Museum and its exhibits. Exhibits on ski history, regional historical events, and cultural changes, ignite community spirit and foster a connection to the Valley.

For its opening, the Museum will present three new exhibits, which will change periodically and will include How in the World Did You Get to Sun Valley? This exhibit explores how people have found their way to this hard-toreach place from all corners of the world. The Portrait of a Mountain exhibit looks at how the iconic Bald Mountain has taken shape and been shaped by the surrounding community over the past 150 years. And A Writer in New Country: Hemingway in 1939 focuses on Ernest Hemingway’s first trip to Sun Valley while writing the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls

“This exhibit will show what Hemingway was like as a writer then, who his friends were, and the activities he did here,” says Tyson. “He is in a landscape that looks like Spain as he writes about the Spanish Civil War, and he brought his third wife to Sun Valley. We want to show his impact, how people responded to him and his being here.”

Also included as part of the Museum are two dedicated galleries. The Tribal Room honors the history and presentday influence of the Shoshone-Bannock tribes, which

have inhabited the lands of Central Idaho since before white settlers arrived. It will feature shoes and fishing weirs created in traditional forms by Shoshone-Bannock tribal members Bobette Haskett and Sam Galloway.

“We are honored and eager to continue working with members of the Shoshone-Bannock tribes to grow a wider understanding and appreciation of the deep history and ongoing culture of ShoshoneBannock peoples throughout Central Idaho and the intermountain West,” says Emery Davidson.

And the Cabinet of Wonders invites visitors to discover history by opening the doors and drawers of a fanciful cabinet with various regional history artifacts—from a telegraph key to vintage skis and sheep shears. Local woodworker and artist Paul Bates constructed the cabinet.

“The artifacts in the Cabinet of Wonders exhibit will change from time to time, and it shows some of the more interesting historical objects the Library keeps,” says Moulton. “We have some very cool and diverse educational and interesting items. It’s meant to encourage object-based research and how that works.”

The Library, along with the Museum, continues a mission to preserve the area’s regional history and tell the stories that are derived from it because history matters. “Ten years ago, the Library became the custodian of the Ketchum/Sun Valley Ski and Heritage Museum because it aligned with the work of the Library’s Center for Regional History and because the Library offered a solid foundation for ongoing historic preservation and exhibition,” says Emery Davidson. “Now it is all available in one accessible place to serve the community, visitors, scholars, historians, and anyone’s interest.” 

EXHIBITIONS AT THE WOOD RIVER MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND CULTURE

HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU GET TO SUN VALLEY?

This exhibit explores the many reasons and ways that people have come to this out-of-the-way area over time. It is not easy to find Sun Valley and Central Idaho in general, here in the high desert mountains of the American West. Still, many different people have done so—coming from Austria, Mexico, China, Spain, Peru, Chicago, Los Angeles, and many other places around the country and the world. This exhibit will profile ten people at a time and tell the stories of their arrivals in Central Idaho through singular personal objects that they each brought with them.

PORTRAIT OF A MOUNTAIN

Over the past 150 years, the greater Ketchum and Sun Valley area has taken shape around, and been shaped by, the iconic Bald Mountain. This exhibit looks deeply at the mountain that defines the local landscape and affects life and imaginations in many ways. Of course, the exhibit showcases skiing—and it also highlights the Philadelphia Smelter that sat at the base of Baldy for many years. It also focuses on the ways that the beauty of Baldy has influenced arts and culture.

A WRITER IN NEW COUNTRY: HEMINGWAY IN 1939

The writer Ernest Hemingway first came to Sun Valley in 1939; he stayed for four months in that first visit, and then he returned for the rest of his life and ultimately made his final home in Ketchum. This exhibit examines who Hemingway was when he arrived in 1939: a writer at his peak, a globetrotter drawn to remote places, a rugged outdoor enthusiast, and a man with complicated personal relationships. This exhibit also shows the people and places Hemingway encountered here in 1939 and what those encounters meant for him and for the place.

CHILL OUT AT DEVOTO GEL ATO

66 svpn- mag.c om

A devotion to sweet treats

When Chef Nadina Ottley Jaichenco sought an opportunity to open a storefront business, she decided upon a gelato shop serving boba—bubble tea. The Italian and Argentinian ice cream treat has become one of the most popular indulgences worldwide, and now it’s available at Devoto Gelato, made in-house and in Hailey. To her good fortune, Nadina revitalized a previous ice cream shop, Yellow Belly, and made it her own.

“I have been working in Sun Valley for a long time as a chef, private chef, and caterer, and it was time to open my own shop,” says Nadina. “I want Devoto Gelato to be more than a summer treat, but a year-round spot to gather and enjoy delicious treats any time of year.”

With a background as a patisserie, formal chef, and master sushi chef, Nadina’s culinary arts experience and abilities are far-reaching. For over ten years, she worked in the catering deparment as head chef and general manager at Cristina’s Restaurant in Ketchum, often praised for her work as delivering a Tiffany box with a bow.

“I assisted in the production for Cristina’s first two cookbooks,” says Nadina. “For the second cookbook, I participated one hundred percent and learned a great deal about how to produce a cookbook, and enjoyed the book tour I did with Cristina. Originally, I wanted to be a meteorologist, and I studied meteorological sciences to pursue a six-year degree, but then something changed in me. It happened when one summer I was helping a friend, and I found a love for food.”

Nadina is from Buenos Aires, Argentina, speaks several languages, and grew up in a large family where her parents taught her how to cook and make things like bechamel at a young age. With her parent’s guidance, when she arrived at culinary school, she had already studied the Larousse Gastronomique, the widely used and studied French-based gastronomic encyclopedia. Nadina flourished under the tutelage of Argentinian chefs Pablo Massey of the Massey Family and Francis Mallmann, owner of the chic Miami Beach Los Fuegos Hotel Mallmann.

“I truly can’t thank Pablo enough for taking me under his wing and sharing everything knew about with me,” says Nadina. “I appeared and prepped food on his television show. I was also his sous chef, and a part of his team so I was sponsored by Sol,

Modelo, and Bacardi. He gave me such a unique experience and introduced me to the world and what I can offer. With Francis, I began my culinary education journey at his five-star restuarant, Patagonia, in Buenos Aires, and at his other restaurant Los Negros located in Jose Ignacio-Punta del Este in Uruguay. It was a jet-set experience and never a dull moment with him. He was very talented free spirit who always encouraged me to believe in myself.”

Bringing together her pastry background with a much-loved treat like gelato sourced with local ingredients was a novel idea. “I invite everyone to come and try my combination of Italian and Argentinian gelato,” says Nadina. “The dulce leche is to die for, and you can take it in a pint to go.”

At Devoto Gelato, Nadina has prepared a variety of authentic creamy gealtos and some for those with dietary considerations such as fruit popsicles and the special of the day. In addition, gelato cakes, cookies, and pints to go are available. For special occassions, Nadina will offer Sunday brunch by reservation and other food events at Devoto Gelato, so follow her on Instagram and look for her upcoming announcements at the shop while enjoying some freshly made gelato or a sweet treat with a boba tea this summer. 

TRAILING OF THE SHEEP FESTIVAL GOES POP!

A Farm to Table(aux)® fundraiser 68 svpn- mag.c om

On Thursday, August 3, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival will hold its inaugural Farm to Table(aux)® fundraising event at the Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum. The event will support the 27th annual Festival to be held October 4-8, 2023, throughout the Wood River Valley. The five-day Festival features cooking classes, dinners, music, storytelling, sheepdog Trials, and, in 2023, will include Navajo/Dine textile artist and weaver TahNibaa Naataanii.

Farm to Table(aux)® is a signature event produced by Studio 4forty for nonprofit organizations. It will be the group’s first-ever event in Idaho, adding to their roster of 2023 events across the country.

Laura Musbach Drake, Executive Director of the Festival, describes Farm to Table(aux)® as “a dinner, meets cocktail party, meets auction, meets living art” event and a brandnew way of celebrating and supporting the Trailing of the Sheep Festival.

The evening promises to be eclectic and lively and will help fund the Festival’s annual Big Sheep Parade, Folklife Fair, and other free events that celebrate and preserve the history and culture of sheepherding in Idaho and the West.

“We want to be able to always keep those events free and open to the public and accessible to anyone who wants

to join us,” says Drake, noting the rising costs of producing the Festival in recent years. Funds will be raised on August 3 through sponsorships, ticket sales, a Mystère Box Raffle, and auctions the night of the event.

“We are very grateful to all of our supporters,” says Drake. “We couldn’t do this without the support of our sponsors and all of the people donating auction items, food, wine, beer, and spirits. Every single donation is what makes this event a success.”

The August 3 event’s theme is “POP! Goes the Warhol,” complemented by vibrant graphic sheep illuminating the artistic motif while celebrating the Festival’s sheepherding heritage.

“We wanted to pick a theme that was understandable and had good reach,” says Drake. “Even for those who don’t consider themselves art connoisseurs, nearly everyone knows who Andy Warhol is, so we thought this would be a friendly way to bring this art-focused event to the broader community.”

Guests will enjoy a farm-to-table feast, artisan cocktails, craft beer, and boutique wines and can bid on auction items to support the Festival. The evening will open with a soiree featuring cocktails supported by Warfield and bites and nibbles from Lisamarie Ault, Lorna Kolash, and Al McCord.

Silver Fox Catering will cater a three-course dinner, with the entree courtesy of the Siddoway Family’s Grand Teton Lamb family ranch in eastern Idaho. The works of local and regional artists will be auctioned off at the event, many of whom entered the Festival’s first-ever poster contest this year. The

Festival received more than 100 submissions from 65 artists, and the winning art and artist will be revealed on the night of August 3.

One hundred tickets will also be sold for the night-ofonly Mystère Box Raffle, a special package that is still to be revealed, though Drake promises that “it will be a pleasure to win.”

And there are some surprises to come, adds Drake. In addition to silent, art, and live auctions, guests will have the opportunity to interact with Tableaux Vivants—living art inspired by Warhol.

Food lovers, sheep lovers, art lovers, and those interested in supporting the Festival will all enjoy this one-of-a-kind benefit POP-ing evening alongside living art and good company for a great cause. 

TALKING TRUTH

Conversations at the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference

From July 22-24 this summer, more than 30 writers and hundreds of readers will descend on the Sun Valley Resort for the 29th annual Sun Valley Writers’ Conference (SVWC).

Each year the nonprofit SVWC gathers an array of today’s greatest storytellers and thinkers for three days of lectures, panels, and conversation in the Idaho plein air. The writers’ genre-spanning talks will range from alternate worlds and immigration to French cakes, humor, the state of democracy, and artificial intelligence. But all will coalesce under this year’s conference theme: The Nature of Truth.

“The theme is always something we come to after the program of writers is set,” says SVWC Literary Director John Burnham Schwartz.

“This year, we saw that in one way or another, the writers were all commenting on the nature of truth,” Schwartz says, “digging into it and playing off our expectations. Somehow the moment we’re in has brought us to a conversation in which truth is at the center.”

Speakers are invited to explore this theme but aren’t held to strict standards. “We have some of the best writers, thinkers, and artists in the world coming here,” says Schwartz. “Part of the joy is letting them bring us the very best of their thinking.”

Instead, the theme will spin a thread through the schedule of events, acting as a nexus for ongoing dialogue between the presenters and the audience over the course of the conference. As part of this conversation, attendees will hear from renowned writers like Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum, who will speak about Ukraine, the European Union, and NATO on Saturday.

Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist Ed Yong will speak on Saturday about his newest book, An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us, in conversation with New York Times columnist and podcast host Ezra Klein. The two will explore how every animal, including humans, lives in a unique sensory bubble and what truths we can learn from other species’ perceptions of the world.

Sunday morning begins with exploring the literary imagination with Emily St. John Mandel, Mosin Hahmid, and Hernan Diaz, authors of the acclaimed novels Sea of Tranquility, The Last White Man, and the recent Pulitzer Prize-winning Trust

“We have some of the best fiction writers working today in our 2023 program,” says Schwartz, “who are writing about different ways of looking at human society, race, the nature of storytelling, and literal, historical truth.”

Diaz’s novel, in particular, says Schwartz, is an example of how every single account of anything is a point of view. “If you don’t know the nature or the origin of that account, then your entire reading of something will be different,” he says.

On Sunday afternoon, a panel titled “America at a Crossroads” welcomes to the Pavilion stage Futuro Media founder Maria Hinojosa, The New Yorker staff writer Evan Osnos, Princeton professor of African American Studies Imani Perry, and former PBS NewsHour host Judy Woodruff.

David Grann, author of bestselling nonfiction adventures such as Killers of the Flower Moon, will discuss his newest book in the Pavilion on Sunday evening. The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Survival, and Savagery details the travails of a mid-18th century crew of British soldiers and is a story of human behavior at the extremes.

For those interested in the lighter side of things, humorist Alexandra Petri joins to discuss her new book, Alexandra Petri’s US History, hailed as a satirical and irreverent textbook on Monday afternoon. And that evening, Dave Barry closes the conference with a talk about his new novel, Swamp Story, a tale of oddball capers, twists, and turns set in Florida.

Other speakers throughout the weekend include former U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith, investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keefe, dance critic Jennifer Homans, and many more.

Two of the conference’s newer ventures—the New Voices Fellowship and the Writer in the World Prize—will also be celebrated. The Fellowship showcases daring and original debut work, and this year recognizes novelists Jonathan Escoffery and Sarah Thankam Mathews.

TOP RIGHT PHOTO BY BARBI REED/SUN VALLEY WRITERS’ CONFERENCE 74 svpn- mag.c om

Physician and author Abraham Verghese will receive the second honor. The Writer in the World Prize “recognizes a writer whose life’s work embodies a rare combination of literary talent and moral imagination, helping us to better understand the world and our place in it.”

“Abraham Verghese is like no one else I know,” says Schwartz. “A writer and physician whose sensitivities to the profundities of the human narrative have led him not only to excel in both fields but also to change our understanding of the power of stories to heal and transform.”

Throughout the weekend, this impressive roster of writers will examine and question our notions of “truth.” So come immerse yourself in some of the greatest stories being told today by some of our greatest minds, and join the conversation. 

HOW TO ATTEND

Full conference passes are sold out, but the public can join for free lawn talks, select livestreams, or by purchasing single event tickets for certain Pavilion events.

GE T HOOKED ON SUN VALLEY SINGLE FLY

Idaho BaseCamp hosts a fly fishing competition benefiting 5th Grade Outdoor Programs

Outdoor immersion is integral to the Sun Valley experience. For locals and visitors alike, hours spent angling on the Big Wood River is the ideal summer activity. Idaho BaseCamp (IBC) will host a fly fishing tournament on July 28 and 29, devoted to celebrating nature through a shared love for fishing. The Single Fly tournament brings together anglers to tackle the Big Wood River in a ‘backyard fly fishing competition’ to support the IBC Sahm 5th Grade outdoor programs.

Single Fly originated in 2020, helping the Sun Valley community find solace throughout the trials of everyday pandemic life on the banks of the Big Wood River. “Fishing was all people were doing in 2020, so we thought it would be a great way to bring people together,” says IBC board member and Sun Valley Single Fly Co-founder David Kurtz. The event originated as a way to foster a sense of community and common purpose amongst friends and families who shared a common love for the river and the experience of nature. Now, it is becoming an annual tradition for anglers who rejoice on the Big Wood River.

The two-day event is set to begin on Friday afternoon when people of all ages are invited to gather at Sun Valley Outfitters from 3:30 to 6:30pm to gear up and register their flies. Anglers can sign up for the Sun Valley Open or a selection of competitions. With Duo Flights, Senior Flights, and Team Opens amongst other categories, there is something for everyone.

“The nature of this event draws people outside and onto the river, which is in alignment with the mission to get kids outside.”

On Saturday, anglers will rise with the sun and make their way to the Big Wood River at 7:30 am. Late risers need not fear, competitors will have until 11:30 to wrap up their two-hour fishing window. There is only one rule: one fly. Lose that fly, and you’re out. The angler to bring home the most fish with that single fly is crowned champion. For some, the hope of walking away with trade secrets of the best holes to fish on the Big Wood is an even better prize than first place. For most, quality time with other people in the community fishing the Big Wood is fulfilling enough.

After anglers lay down their rods, Single Fly will host a BBQ and Awards Ceremony in the heart of Ketchum to celebrate winners and bestow the epic golden belt buckle. Over food and drinks, IBC will present the winners of their raffle with sensational prizes including bespoke fly fishing retreats and exclusive weekend getaways that will be auctioned off.

ABOUT SUN VALLEY SINGLE FLY

The Single Fly is a celebration of family, the joy of angling, and the beauty of the Valley that honors the spirit of the unique program it benefits. “The nature of this event draws people outside and onto the river, which aligns with the mission to get kids outside. It’s not often that you have a fundraiser where your activity is in alignment with the organization so that the participants get to experience what the kids get from camp,” says Founder and Executive Director of IBC and Co-founder of Sun Valley Single Fly Mat Gershater.

Nature is essential to the experience of living in the Wood River Valley. In 2019, the Sahm Family Foundation empowered IBC to develop the Sahm 5th Grade Outdoor Adventure Education sleepaway program, giving kids of all backgrounds the resources and skills to enjoy life outdoors. The program serves students in every public school in Blaine, Custer, Lemhi, Butte, Camus, Ada, and Lincoln Counties. IBC welcomes over 450 students each year for three days and two nights of outdoor adventure education. Every fall and spring, the Big Lost Campus becomes a hub for lessons in mindfulness, survival skills, teambuilding, and more. Through this immersive experience, 5th graders learn to embody core values of Personal Responsibility, Courage, and Respect for All through fostering a connection with the outdoors. 

SUMMER(TIME)

It’s well-spent in the Sawtooths

80 svpn-mag.com

Sawtooth Valley summers are short but equally long on exhilaration and rejuvenation. So waste your time here wisely— under dark skies searching for the Milky Way, in streets dancing, down rivers rafting, in long soaks at hot springs, in wildflower meadows, ghost towns, and galleries, on guest ranches and sunset lake cruises. It’s all here and more.

The third annual Sawtooth Festival comes to town July 15-16, a two-day arts, crafts, food, and daily live music event held on the grounds of Mountain Village Resort in the heart of Stanley. Over 75 vendors and artisans from across the state of Idaho and throughout the region will sell their unique handmade wares, from clothing, jewelry, and décor to pottery, leather, photography, and more. Check out the festival website for details, which also offers links to the individual artisans and their creations. Keep in mind that no pets or smoking is allowed at the festival.

Food and beverage options will be available at Mountain Village Resort, Papa Brunee’s, and from a variety of food trucks and vendors offering the likes of craft Idaho beer, bottled wine, ice cream, Mexican food, Philly delights, and even hot made-to-order donuts. Over at Mountain Village Resort’s Velvet Falls Dance Hall, Cruz Contreras of the Black Lillies performs two nights at 9pm, July 14-15.

Check out the Stanley Museum and the Redfish Visitor Center for the love of history, interpretation, and education of Stanley-Sawtooth country. Both venues provide a wealth of information and programs for learning more about the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA). The Museum and Visitor Center are managed by the Sawtooth Interpretive Historical Association (SIHA), a nonprofit founded in 1972, celebrating 50 years in operation. They are the first—and only—cooperating interpretive association for the SNRA, working in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to provide interpretive and educational programs throughout the region.

The Stanley Museum is open daily for the summer through Labor Day, 10am-5pm. Located in the historic Valley Creek Ranger Station, the Museum displays photographs and artifacts depicting the early days in the Sawtooth Valley. It offers a glimpse of pioneer life in this not-so-gentle landscape. Numerous events occur at the museum, including History Day and the Sawtooth Salmon Festival. The Sawtooth Forum & Lecture Series are free and happen on the lawn at 5pm every other Friday.

The Redfish Visitor Center & Gallery is located just above the dog beach on Redfish Lake and is just a short walk from the Lodge. In 1962, this historic building was the first visitor center that the Forest Service built in the Lower 48 states. Prior to that, only one other had been established in Alaska. The team of knowledgeable naturalists offers free educational programs daily for all ages, including a Junior Ranger Program for kids ages 5-12 (parents are welcome too), Discovery Stations near the Redfish Lodge, the Stanley Lake boat ramp, and at area trailheads or campsites. On the Visitor Center’s front porch, they hold daily Patio Talks for a 15-minute overview of Sawtooth-related topics and Ranger talks at the Redfish Amphitheater and guided walks, with evening programs two times a week. SIHA sells numerous maps and guides for the local area in both locations. Pick up a game for kids, a new book to read, or a guidebook about the local flora, fauna, history, or geology.

The Stanley Museum is located in the historic Valley Creek Ranger Station.

For the exhilaration-minded, book a whitewater rafting trip on the Salmon River. White Otter Outdoor Adventures, one of central Idaho’s most complete outfitting services, has 30+ years of experience, offering guided rafting trips for locals and Sun Valley and Stanley area visitors. Headquartered in Sunbeam Village on Highway 75 northeast of Stanley, they are the only locally-owned and-operated outfitter on the Upper Main Salmon and the only company located at the put-in, so you’ll meet your guide in Sunbeam and walk down to the river to find rafts at the ready.

“The varied sections of the Upper Main Salmon allow us to tailor a unique rafting experience for all types of guests, from rowdy to restrained, for families and groups of all sizes and

ages,” says Doug Fenn, White Otter’s owner. “When an inquiry is made, we take the time to find out the group’s comfort level because we have a tremendous amount of flexibility in what we can off for adventures, whether someone rides in a raft or inflatable kayak.”

White Otter retains enough guides for last-minute river trip planning once you get to Sun Valley or Stanley. With knowledge of the area that only a local can provide, White Otter guarantees an enjoyable and easy day on the water. It’s time well-spent for a day of memories you’ll never forget. 

KITCHEN FACELIFT

“At Allison Paige Interior Design, we pride ourselves on creating relationships with clients, contractors, subcontractors, and everyone involved with our projects,” says Allison Connolly, owner of Allison Paige Interior Design. “There is no bigger compliment than a client who returns to us for a new home or project within the same house. We began working with our client (now a close friend) in 2016 when it was time for a “small” kitchen facelift. This particular project became much larger and more in-depth. A complete kitchen overhaul turned out beautifully, and since then, we’ve tackled an office, bedrooms, and two bathrooms. What will we embark on next?”

PEAK HEALTH THROUGH AUTOIMMUNE

Unravel chronic stress

The autoimmune struggle is one of frustration, hopelessness, anxiety, depression, and endless lack of energy. You can use this journey to pull yourself out of the dark hole of fatigue and sickness and find your entire life’s most radiant and joyful health. The triumph of returning to health becomes the greatest accomplishment of a lifetime.

What is “autoimmune?” I classify autoimmune as a chronic immune condition that has become inflammatory to the brain/cerebellum causing fatigue, brain fog, hopelessness, and depression. Family, friends, and colleagues rarely understand autoimmune conditions. It can be isolating, by nature leading to feeling defective, and few understand this silent illness unless they do.

Autoimmune conditions include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Lyme disease, Epstein Barr, long COVID, parasitic infection, hepatitis, Herpes simplex and zoster, chemical and environmental toxicity, mold poisoning, abnormal skin conditions, and often involve leaky gut, and by extension, all the neurological conditions such as vaccine injury, ADD, depression, anxiety, brain fog, and more.

The causes of autoimmune remain unknown to the medical community. They are listed below. The AARDA states that commonly used immunosuppressant treatments lead to devastating long-term side effects. Triggers for autoimmune conditions are stress, hormone changes (adolescence, pregnancy, menopause), heavy metals, food, pesticides, and poisons. Dietary and lifestyle changes are necessary, as research shows that epigenetics are a stronger factor than genetics for these conditions.

The American Autoimmune Related Disease Association (AARDA) reports that 50 million Americans suffer from autoimmune disease, costing 100 billion dollars. This is a huge burden to our Western medical system, ill-equipped to handle chronic illness, and can be a significant economic burden to an individual. Autoimmune conditions are listed in the top 10 leading causes of death for women under age 64.

In the United States, estimates report that cancer affects nine million people, 100 million people have diabetes, and one in eight seniors develop Alzheimer’s. One in

150 svpn- mag.c om

eight children is diagnosed with a brain disorder. Twentyfour million people have dementia, expected to double every 15 years. Antidepressants are the second most commonly prescribed medication in the U.S. and are climbing. Early signs of brain dysfunction are anxiety, depression, insomnia, learning disorders, and cognitive decline. Our bodies and brains are completely overloaded with toxicity and stress, with little or no emotional or spiritual connection.

How have we gotten to this state? Our systems are not designed to handle long-term chronic stress or the degree of

WELLNESS | CENTER

Research shows that emotional stress paves the way for immune breakdown later in life.

chemicals and toxicity we are exposed to daily through our food, particularly in the United States. We allow over 30 toxic substances in our food that are banned in other countries. Furthermore, there is a strong connection between the health of the nervous system and emotional, physical, and mental health. Our central nervous system responds no differently to an emotional crisis than to chronic infections, toxic exposure, or poor nutrition. Research shows that emotional stress paves the way for immune breakdown later in life.

According to research done by a group in San Diego in 1995, childhood traumatic stress or adverse childhood experiences (ACE) increased the risk for autoimmune disorders. Compared with persons with no adverse childhood experiences, people with two or more adverse childhood experiences (including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, divorce, and unsafe and unstable living conditions) had an increase of 80-100% chance of being hospitalized with an autoimmune disorder. Compared with persons with no ACEs, persons with more than two were

at a 70%-100% risk for autoimmune conditions. Autoimmune conditions are debilitating and present great personal, financial, and emotional burdens to the individuals suffering from them. This research shows a direct correlation between feeling unsafe, abandoned, unloved, or unworthy and later inflammatory and immune conditions. Imagine the impact of loving, supportive parents on the lifetime health of their children.

On to the solutions. I love working with autoimmune. I aim for full resolution even in the toughest of cases when people look me in the eye and say they will never get better. Fast-forward a few months, and these people are fully functioning and living a life tha they never thought possible. I love when people experience this and have tried 10 to 20 prior resolution paths without success. We always have success. Our techniques range from neurologically-based techniques that unravel chronic stress to the nervous system, including trauma and life changes. We “reset” the nervous system and the brain at the level of the hypothalamus. The brain controls everything. We change the brain, body, and immune system, and emotions follow. By training and “resetting” the brain while stabilizing the adrenals, hormones, nervous system, and organs/ glands of the body simultaneously, I see that chronic and debilitating conditions can be overcome and health restored. Usually, within a few sessions, sleep, energy, and mental clarity improve.

Autoimmune conditions are chronic immune conditions that can take down a seemingly healthy, vibrant person. They can also be the catalyst to achieving a level of health restored that you are so passionately grateful for, so in love with, that you will achieve the highest possible octaves of a positive and radiant life.

Dr. Molly Brown, Ph.D., D.N.M. owns CENTER , her neurologicallybased clinic, and GLOW in Ketchum, Idaho. TAKE THE PLUNGE

Explore the benefits of cold water therapy

In the realm of cutting-edge wellness, a new trend has emerged, captivating the attention of health enthusiasts and high-end spa-goers alike—cold water therapy, more commonly known as a cold plunge. This advanced practice involves immersing the body in icy water, harnessing the power of extreme cold and its remarkable health benefits. From enhancing physical performance to rejuvenating the mind and body, the allure of cold plunging has attracted the world’s most discerning clientele.

Behind the appeal of cold plunging lies a fascinating explanation. When exposed to extreme cold, the body undergoes remarkable physiological changes, resulting in various health benefits. These include:

Enhanced Athletic Performance

Cold plunge stimulates blood circulation and oxygenation, improving muscle recovery, reducing inflammation, and enhancing overall athletic performance. Elite athletes and sports professionals have recognized cold plunging as a secret weapon for maintaining peak physical condition.

Anti-Aging and Skin Rejuvenation

The frigid temperatures of a cold plunge trigger collagen production, promoting skin elasticity and reducing the

154 svpn- mag.c om
WELLNESS | ZENERGY svpn-mag.com 155

appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Cold immersion also constricts blood vessels, reducing puffiness and giving the complexion a radiant, youthful glow.

Stress Reduction and Mental Well-being

Cold exposure prompts the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, inducing a euphoric state and reducing stress and anxiety. Cold water therapy has become a sought-after practice for those seeking to achieve mental resilience and find balance in their high-pressure lives.

Weight Management and Metabolism Boost

Cold immersion stimulates metabolism, increasing calorie burning and potential weight loss. The process activates brown fat, which generates heat and consumes excess energy, contributing to a more efficient metabolism.

Detoxification and Immune Support

Cold plunging stimulates lymphatic circulation, aiding in the elimination of toxins and waste from the body. This detoxifying effect strengthens the immune system, bolstering overall health and resilience.

To maximize the benefits of cold plunging, it is important to understand the optimal exposure guidelines. Research suggests that the minimum effective immersion schedule totals 11 minutes per week spread over 3-4 sessions at temperatures between 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This carefully calculated regimen ensures that the body receives the desired physiological responses without overexposure. Timing is also a critical factor in maximizing the effectiveness of cold therapy after exercise.

A 2019 study by The Physiological Society highlights the potential drawbacks of immediate cold therapy, indicating that it can impede the muscle’s utilization of protein for repair. This interference may hinder the muscle’s ability to grow back stronger and larger. Therefore, a strategic approach to post-workout recovery, such as Chris Hemsworth’s routine of ice baths before training and a post-workout sauna, ensures optimal muscle repair and growth while embracing the potential benefits of cold water therapy.

Cold water therapy has transcended the realms of traditional wellness, emerging as the ultimate indulgence for those who seek health and holistic rejuvenation. With its myriad benefits, widespread integration into luxury spas, and endorsement by some of the world’s most influential figures, the cold plunge has become an essential tool for improved wellness. Embark on this transformative journey and unlock the secrets of the cold tub.

Zenergy is thrilled to announce the addition of its plunge pool, a dedicated space with stunning views of Baldy. Immerse yourself in the invigorating cold waters, meticulously maintained at the perfect temperature, and discover the profound effects of the ColdTub®. For those who wish to experience the power of cold water therapy, it is essential to consult with your physician. Always prioritize safety and follow the guidance of experts. 

THE GRETCHEN PALMER PATIENT ASSISTANCE FUND

Helping and healing through generosity

158 svpn- mag.c om

What is it like to live here? This is a question this writer has been asked many, many times since moving here 25 years ago. The query may have come just after a hike, a day of skiing, a symphony, a meal out with friends, or a trip to the grocery store. No matter the prompt, my answer is always at the tip of my tongue. I say, “It is all about community. We care for each other, even if we don’t know you.” I have countless examples. Last June, our Valley was given a shining example that continues to impact others today. This story is best told through the words of others, and it is a story that has unwritten chapters, chapters that can be shaped by you and by generosity.

It is a story of a beautiful soul, Gretchen Palmer, and her family’s love and desire to honor her kind and generous spirit. While Gretchen was undergoing treatments for her cancer, she and her family became

WELLNESS | ST. LUKE’S
svpn-mag.com 159

aware of how some other patients and their families may not have access to support that can make a difference.

As Gretchen’s husband, Terry Palmer, explains, “My wife, Gretchen Palmer, the mother of our children and my partner for 39 years, was very special. And I mean, ‘Saintly Special.’ Her heart and spirit were open and pure. Gretchen was respected and loved by all in Sun Valley and beyond. She is missed by all. She was tough as nails and would like nothing better than to pay it forward.”

Wanting to help others and to meaningfully pay tribute to Gretchen’s extraordinary compassion and joyful life, Terry and their three children, Teagen, Bergen, and Grayson, established The Gretchen Palmer Patient Assistance Fund through St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation (SLWRF) to support Wood River Valley patients fighting cancer and other serious illnesses. Megan Tanous, Chief Development Officer of SLWRF, explains, “‘Gretchen’s Fund’ assists patients and their immediate families with expenses such as transportation, lodging, utilities, groceries, medications, medical supplies, and other items deemed necessary, helping to ease the stress of patients and families facing medical challenges and give them the ability to focus on their health and well-being.”

Currently, St. Luke’s Center for Community Health in Hailey distributes the funds for those with oncologyrelated needs, and St. Luke’s Cancer Institute in Twin Falls also has access to the funds to help people who live in

the Wood River Valley and travel to Twin Falls for treatment. According to Sarah Seppa, Director of Community Engagement and Manager at the Center for Community Health, multiple cancer patients have used the funds so far, and the support has been critical.

Wood River residents accessing assistance come from varied demographics and express that in addition to the relief from financial support, it is comforting for patients facing serious illness to know that the community is supporting them. The wife of a patient who received care expressed, “The team at St. Luke’s were wonderful to work with facilitating assistance, and we so appreciated the help. The assistance with hotels, cases of Ensure, and just knowing the offer was open for additional help helped ease my husband’s burden. The Gretchen Palmer Fund is a fantastic and much-needed assistance program for the Wood River Valley!”

This is a beautiful example of how our community cares for each other through thoughtfulness, care, compassion, and generosity. In this case, the Palmer family and the SLWRF have created a vehicle to continually help others throughout the community. Terry expressed his gratitude and hope, saying, “We appreciate any and the support to make ‘Gretchen’s Fund’ a meaningful contribution to relieve some of the burden that cancer patients and families may face.” 

To learn more and to donate to the Gretchen Palmer Patient Assistance Fund, visit slwrf.org/gretchen-palmer-patient-assistance-fund/ or contact Betsy Mullins at mullinse@slhs.org or 208.727.8419.

THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY’S HIDDEN GEMS

Sun Valley Museum of Art debuts renovations with an exhibition of artworks from local collections

The Wood River Valley is home to artists and esteemed collectors alike. This concentrated wealth of creativity makes one wonder: What artifacts exist behind our neighbors’ closed doors?

In one of her first acts as the new Executive Director of the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA), Jennifer Wells Green made it her mission to find out. It started on a Monday in mid-July, 2022, when a gentleman with a generous proposition came knocking. “I haven’t crossed the threshold of this building in decades, and I know the museum doesn’t collect art,” he said, “but I have some pieces in my home that I am hoping to share.” The gentleman invited Wells Green to his home where she was captivated by a large Fairfield Porter painting. The piece was previously unknown to her, its name and date a mystery. Intrigued by the work’s majesty and anonymity, Wells Green wondered what other unseen treasures might be lurking amongst this community of collectors.

And so she began excavating the Wood River Valley for its Hidden Gems. “Having just moved to the ‘Gem State,’ I couldn’t help but take the name and run with it,” explains Wells Green. Along with resident curator Courtney Gilbert, Wells Green began visiting private collections, uncovering a trove of surprises, including unusual works by well-known artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Ken Price, and Frank Stella. Wells Green and Gilbert reveled in discoveries, such as photographs by Anthony Hernandez and Cindy Sherman, that pay homage to the spirit of the Valley.

Collectors were energized and generous when called upon to contribute. “It’s interesting to see what people bring from where they come,” one donor remarked to Wells Green. These pieces primarily come from individuals who have moved to the Wood River Valley from all over, their tastes often influenced by their journeys. Putting these pieces in conversation with one another speaks to the diversity of

cultural perspectives in the Valley. Speaking to this juxtaposition, Wells Green highlights the pairing of paintings by New York School icon Joan Mitchell and celebrated British painter Cecily Brown (who currently has a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art). “These incredible women from different generations who both have an exuberant and joyful use of color will be exciting to see together,” she remarks.

In shaping the vision for Hidden Gems, Wells Green and Gilbert avoided focusing on a particular era or medium. Instead, the exhibit is about collecting as an art form and the curiosity it may ignite in a spectator. “It’s wonderful that we can share these works and get people excited about artists they may not have known otherwise,” says Wells Green, “I hope it encourages the notion of collecting.”

In conjunction with this exhibition, SVMoA will offer a series of public programs examining collecting from different vantage points. For Wells Green, collecting extends beyond fine art. “Many of us are born collectors— art, rocks, snow globes, cars, plants—anything that brings us joy. Collecting is more than an activity. It is a passion from the excitement of discovery to the thrill of the hunt, the deep dive into knowledge, and the opportunity to share our collections with others,” she reflects.

Wells Green came on board as the Executive Director of SVMoA with big plans, namely improving the Museum experience for the community. Previous efforts to secure funding for a new building in the late 2000s had proved unsuccessful, so Wells Green took a new approach: demonstrate greater possibilities by refining the existing space.

Wells Green was well prepared for the task. During her 14 years at UCLA’s Hammer Museum, she was instrumental in helping to develop it into a flourishing contemporary art institution. Wells Green was attracted to SVMoA for its 50-year history of programmatic collaboration with artists and hands-on community engagement, but she also believed that tangible improvements to the facility would encourage the community to see its full potential.

With 20 years of deferred maintenance, these modest adjustments, such as new wood floors, improved lighting, a fresh coat of paint on the walls, and a 25% increase in exhibition space will make a monumental difference. Two offices have been converted into a small gallery that allows for a second show or installation, and the classroom has been completely renovated to allow for expanded programming. “The scale isn’t huge,” Wells Green remarks, “but it is a great way for us to expand our exhibitions and demonstrate to our community that our programming is deserving of larger spaces.”

This summer, Hidden Gems kicks off the grand re-opening of SVMoA. As the final coats of paint dry, everything is on course for a successful launch. There was just one loose end Wells Green needed to tie up. Nagged by the missing identity of the Porter painting that inspired this inaugural exhibit, Wells Green and the painting’s owner dug a little deeper to find the answers. Eventually, they succeeded. The painting, entitled July, was painted in 1971—the approximate date the Sun Valley Center for the Arts first opened its doors. 

RODNEY SMITH LEAPS

Delightful, composed, and slightly surreal are descriptors that leap to the fore when you first encounter Rodney Smith’s photographs. But with a longer look, you discover more contradictory responses. Smith’s images are romantic and playful; they are also solitary and lonely. They speak to this century but allude to a time that never really was—illustrating a life of leisure that is only manifest in the pages of fashion magazines.

In Smith’s photographs, formally dressed men and women are placed, or seemingly descend, into settings that are as startling perfect as they are structured and surprising. There is a deep longing and a sense of humor in his impeccably designed images, signaling a maker who is profoundly good at his work. His work can be seen in Rodney Smith: Leap of Faith at Gilman Contemporary in Ketchum, June 13-July 25, 2023. The exhibition celebrates the artist’s 45-year career and the J. Paul Getty Museum’s newly published book on his life.

In nearly all of Smith’s photographs, cultivated, well-heeled, formally dressed people pose in unorthodox situations—an elegantly coiffed woman in a long white gown stands atop a dirty fishing boat, a suited man in a bowler leans against a bale of hay. Smith offers us images that are as paradoxical as they are amusing. They upend our expectations, providing a moment that is hard to slot into a fuller narrative—it doesn’t feel as if Smith is so much capturing a story as striving to create one. His biography offers some clues as to why.

Rodney Smith was born in 1947 in New York City into a Jewish-American family. His parents traveled extensively, and Smith was raised by caretakers who introduced him to photography as a child. Smith attended University of Virginia, initially majoring in English literature but completing his degree in religious studies. He went on to Yale Divinity School and divided his time between theology and photography. It was in 1967, after a fight with his father over his chosen course of studies, that Smith went to the Museum of Modern Art, where he encountered photographs by Margaret Bourke-White, Andre Kertesz, and Dorothea Lange. Their images captured him and set his life course.

Walker Evans, who is best known for his photographs of the Great Depression, was Smith’s teacher at Yale and had a significant influence on him. Evans encouraged Smith to travel and capture images of working people. Smith’s early photographs were of New England’s landscape and its farmers and factory workers. Then he received a grant to go to Israel to photograph ethnic populations. Smith worked hard to build trust with his subjects, and the resulting monograph, The Land of Light: Israel a Portrait of its People (1983), was a success that led to exhibitions and some sales. To earn a living, he taught and led workshops where he focused on content, encouraging his students to read novels for inspiration rather than obsess about the technicalities of making pictures. Believing that what was most important were images that held emotional resonance, Smith teased out of his students their personal voices and visions.

In the late 1980s, Smith began to get corporate commissions. The businesses wanted portraits of their leadership that were more appealing than traditional men in suits. Because of his ability to connect with his subjects, Smith was able to do the unorthodox—placing the executives outdoors, engaged in activities that humanized them. Through these commissions, Smith’s signature style began to emerge—his images were meticulously composed and technically flawless, but they were also warm and surprising. Finding the right setting for his shoots was critical. It’s the location that drives all the pictures, he explained. Smith took time—seeking just the right location, waiting for the desired light, and carefully selecting models he connected with.

Smith’s propensity for the absurd has linked him with the European surrealists who offered up the subconscious and dreams as legitimate subject matter for art.

As Smith began to shoot fashion photography, his focus was not on the clothing but on creating an atmosphere. This approach appealed to high-end retailers, and he was hired by Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, and Neiman Marcus. He also accepted assignments from fashion magazines as well as W and Vanity Fair. In 1995 W sent Smith to Paris, where he made Woman with a Hat Between the Hedges Parc de Sceaux, France (2004), which will be in the exhibition at Gilman Contemporary.

Smith’s upbringing cultivated a taste for grand chateaus and country estates. He loved the orderliness of formal gardens and elegantly dressed people. In this photograph, the precisely placed woman, whose hat’s texture and color mimics the foliage around her, merges with her environment.

Smith’s propensity for the absurd has linked him with the European surrealists who offered up the subconscious and dreams as legitimate subject matter for art. Smith’s link with surrealism is easy to see. He embraces the marvelous moment and often juxtaposes incongruous subjects. In Don Jumping Over Hay Roll No. 1 Monkton, Maryland (1999) and Laura on top of Boat No. 2, Lake Placid, New York (2006), we see formally dressed people in rural settings and poses that highlight the unexpected. It is this incongruity that delights. Contrasting scale and color, cultivated nature, and formal wear, Smith pulls you in to the strange wonder of the world.

L’Anne Gilman, gallery owner and longtime friend of Smith’s, comments, “The valuable thing about art is that it forces us to stop and look beyond what is in front of us. What I admire most about Rodney is that he asked us, as viewers and as

human beings, to connect more deeply with the world. He cared deeply not only about his work but about also about the people with whom he worked. The details in his work mattered as much as the details in his life and his relationships.”

In his early 50s, Smith was diagnosed with cancer. Working through rounds of chemotherapy, he was able to accept

commissions for a number of years, but Smith’s career as a commercial photographer began to wind down as magazines began to lose their audiences. He turned his focus to his own work, and while his life was truncated by illness, Smith is now recognized as important part of photography’s recent history. His ability to translate his personal life story into a delightful, if impossible, vision of the world was singular and inspiring.

“The making of photographs is the end result of my coproduction with the world.”

DAVID YARROW’S LENS ON THE WEST

Contemporary photographer visits Broschofsky Galleries

Scottish-born photographer David Yarrow’s dramatic monochromatic images often have a central anchoring figure whose gaze meets ours, begging the question—friend or enemy? In the large-scale cinematic narratives of The Wild West, Yarrow not only builds off classic Western archetypes but also his own body of work. Throughout his career, Yarrow has captured the fickle relationship between humanity, animal, and land. It is fitting that Yarrow has built through elaborate yet unpredictable productions work that captivates our imagination and speaks to our shifting relationship to the “wild.” Whether it is a Texas Longhorn staring down empty railroad tracks, the headlights of a rare Ferrari, or a cowboy on a lonely street, Yarrow has an innate ability to drive narrative. The grand scale of these photographs means that when standing before them, we are fully immersed in a story. Working with a dedicated team, Yarrow’s images are the culmination of attuned craft, artistic vision, and collaboration. These are photographs that are breathtaking when seen in person at Broschofsky Galleries.

“If you go to try a thing on in this Western country, you’ve got to do it WELL.”(Owen Wister, The Virginian 1903) David Yarrow has done just that, tried on the “The Wild West” and done it WELL. The vast expanses of the “West” have captured the imagination of artists since Western expansion began in the early 1800s. With stories told through literature, visual arts, and cinema, we all have a plethora of reference points. For me, growing up during the age of the “Marlboro Man,” whose colossal images of the lone cowboy loomed over American highways and cities. I automatically go to those images when I see a lone cowboy. Yarrow tips his hat to these icons in images like Go West Young Man

Given only a few hours to shoot, this image is the product of timing and vision. With a large-scale production, this is not an easy feat. The artist and his team successfully battled

unknown weather, restrictions, and regulations of shooting in a popular tourist destination to create an iconic image that brings back the many lone cowboys I saw so often on my commutes as a child. On a deserted street in Telluride, a lone cowboy peers out from his black-brimmed hat atop a white horse. Yarrow has filled the frame with monochromatic gray while a slash of bright light emerges from the sky.

Shot on the abandoned set of There Will Be Blood, Yarrow’s

The End of the Line brings us eye to eye with a Texas Longhorn. Once again, we have a central figure staring down the camera. This homage to the wagons and train rails that brought settlers to the “wilds” of the West has a more subtle drama than Go West Young Man. Yarrow is repeated confronted by the dangers and pleasures of working with the unpredictability of animals. This is not exclusive to his staged “Wild West” series, but we see his ability to become intimate

with his subjects through his images of lions, bears, and buffalo. He treats each creature equally. This is evident in the playful image Ferrari.

Railroads were replaced by the pavement of Route 66, and in Ferrari, our gaze is met head-on by not only the vehicle but the model driving and her wolf companion. The modern era is upon us, and Yarrow drives us away from the untamed West onto what John Steinbeck described as “the mother road.” The journey west continued through the 20th century, and in this image, the vehicle is the rare 1953 Ferrari 250

David Yarrow is the first contemporary photographer that Broschofsky Galleries has exhibited, yet his work fits seamlessly into their program. He is an artist who is able to capture a sense of intimacy with his subjects, whether a familiar celebrity or a bison. Yarrow’s work can have a sense of danger; he is putting himself/his camera between us and the wild bison, us and the armed cow folk in a saloon. 

THE MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE AND PAINTINGS OF JUN KANEKO

Creativity Without Limits

Gail Severn Gallery presents a major exhibition featuring Jun Kaneko’s glazed and Raku-fired ceramics, large-scale paintings, and pieces from his private collection. The exhibition runs from July 7 through the month of September.

Jun Kaneko, an internationally renowned artist, was born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1942. Seeking creative freedom, he embarked on a journey to the United States at the age of 21. Arriving in Los Angeles in 1963 with no knowledge of English, Kaneko immersed himself in the art scene.

In California, Kaneko connected with influential clay artists like Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner, and Jerry Rothman, who defined the contemporary ceramics movement. Inspired by abstract expressionism, he pushed the boundaries of traditional ceramic sculpture in form, scale, and glazing techniques.

Kaneko’s iconic “dango” sculptures feature soft, round forms without edges or seams. The Japanese word “dango” translates to “dumpling,” reflecting the sculpture’s shape. Kaneko describes his journey as a ceramic artist as gradually gaining the bold confidence to recognize when a form is complete and needs no further alteration. Today, his smoothedged, abstract sculptures are widely recognized and celebrated.

As Kaneko explains, “Things exist because of the space around them. You increase the spatial relationship…and the whole feeling changes. It’s

amazing. That’s been my major interest for over 30 years. The Japanese call it ma: the space between…” He considers the environment encompassing a sculpture as integral to the artwork itself. Kaneko expands this idea by creating monumental sculptures, harnessing the power of scale that far exceeds the height of the viewer.

In 1994, Kaneko became the first modern artist to attempt colossal ceramic sculptures using 1,000-pound blocks of clay. His Mission Clay Project, held in Pittsburg, Kansas, from 2004 to 2008, featured dango sculptures reaching heights of 13 feet. Working on multiple sculptures simultaneously, Kaneko patiently built each piece, allowing the base to dry before adding more weight. Patience and methodical planning are crucial, as even subtle changes in the kiln’s temperature have a dramatic effect on the clay bodies during firing. Kaneko’s intuitive decision-making, based on the trials and tribulations of his past experience, expertly guide the process.

Kaneko blends American Modernist influences with traditional Japanese tradition to create a body of work that is inspired and distinctive in style. Fearlessly pushing artistic boundaries, he defies the rules and embraces complex logistics and planning. At the core of Kaneko’s work is unmodulated creativity. He firmly believes that everyone possesses creative

energy, and that it’s a matter of fostering that spark rather than extinguishing it with strict constraints. Kaneko’s artwork can be found in over 100 museum collections worldwide, and his close to 70-year career has included countless international exhibitions and public art installations. He has also ventured into fashion and theater, collaborating with renowned composer Andy Akiho and designing sets and costumes for Opera Omaha’s performance of Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. By challenging rigid definitions of sculpture and painting, Kaneko proves that his artistic ingenuity and courage as an artist are truly limitless. 

Artists’ Reception

Jennifer Lowe combines the landscapes, animals, and people of her native Montana with a unique approach to painting. Using the non-traditional medium of a Livestock Marker, which she applies with her fingers and a brush, Lowe’s work embodies a sense of play or wonder attributable to her acute awareness and love of nature and her surroundings.

When asked about her fascination with the horse as subject matter, Jean Richardson often describes how on many levels, the image is ideal for her true subjects,

namely motion and energy. Her large-scale acrylic on canvas paintings take the image of a horse and use it as a metaphor for the human spirit as she sees it—unbridled, striving, restless, and sometimes heroic. Her use of paint reflects this spiritual connection with her subject through movement, form, and vivid color.

Local artist Christopher Brown uses a graphite pencil to create his remarkably intricate drawings on white-painted birch panels of his construction. In Brown’s first show at the Gallery, he will explore nostalgic images of barns and atmospheric tree groves in his unique style, which allows the viewer a glimpse of moments in time that are significant to him.

Kratz finds inspiration in Arizona’s harsh desert climate, collecting found organic materials such as bone fragments, poppy pods, grasses, and flowers, which she collects on long hikes in the surrounding area of her home and even on the train tracks behind her studio. She arranges this matter in circles, constellations, nests, and other forms before suspending it in resin against a painted panel.

The compositions often come to Kratz in dreams or in those suspended moments between states of consciousness right before sleep. Combined with a smooth, matte finish achieved by hand-sanding, these mesmerizing arrangements recast the natural world in poetic and inspired terms. The process is timeconsuming, toxic, and difficult, but for her, this act of preservation is an ode to the cyclical pattern of nature.

“With my art, I celebrate the endless cycles of change and rebirth,” she explains. “I have great reverence for the natural world.”

With this new series of works, Kratz pushes herself both artistically and physically to create pieces that celebrate our earth by changing how we experience the flora and fauna that surround us every day. By assigning a soulful presence and sense of importance to matter most frequently overlooked, she speaks to the poet in each of us and causes us to reconsider what it means to pause and pay attention. Her work invites us to pause and celebrate nature and to not take even the most prolific weed

Rodney Smith Retrospective: Leap of Faith

Rodney Smith (1947-2016) was a renowned New York-based photographer with a career that spanned over four decades. Long acclaimed for his iconic black and white images that combine portraiture and landscape, Smith created enchanted worlds full of subtle contradictions and surprises. Using only film and light, his unretouched, dream-like images are matched in quality by the craft and physical beauty of his prints. In 2002 Smith began experimenting with color film and continued to create timeless, classic images that reflected his innate playfulness and curiosity.

Over the course of a successful career that lasted more than 45 years, Rodney Smith developed a unique photographic vision. In each of his carefully-crafted compositions, he banishes the chaos of modern life for another that is grounded in a romantic view of the past.

Smith’s work continues to be shown at museums and galleries worldwide. In 2021 the J. Paul Getty Museum acquired ten of his photographs for their permanent collection. In May of 2023, Getty Publications released Rodney Smith: A Leap of Faith, a collection of essays and photographs chosen by Paul Martieau, Curator of Photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum, with contributions by Rebecca A. Snef and Leslie Smolan and with an introduction by Graydon Carter. Rodney Smith will always be remembered as a creator who cared deeply about sharing his vision of the world with humor, grace, and optimism.

Broschofsky Galleries

David Yarrow

The Wild West

For the first time in its 36-year history, Broschofsky Galleries has included works by a contemporary photographer in its stable of fine art. Their recent introduction to the unique storytelling style of famed photographer David Yarrow gave good reason for his inclusion.

His Wild West series images, set in spectacular backgrounds, are carefully composed. These distinctive and often difficult locations include staged models—some very recognizable, eccentric Western characters and, often, trained wild animals. These precise and expensive details demand the expertise of a master photographer to know his medium and get it right—in an instant. The resulting images reveal a look

that could be a still from a movie scene. The large scale of these monochrome images completes the drama.

Yarrow has gained a worldwide reputation for his brilliant compositions and the adept use of his medium. A selection of Yarrow’s work will be on display throughout the summer, along with works by Bill Barrett, Rudi Broschofsky, Russell Chatham, Edward Curtis, Ewoud DeGroot, Joellyn Duesberry, Joan Mitchell, Ken Peloke, Billy Schenck, Theodore Villa, Russell Young, Andy Warhol, and more.

Polychromic

July 8 through August 19

OCHI is pleased to present Polychromic, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Caitlin Lonegan. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with OCHI. Polychromic will be on view at OCHI Sun Valley with an artist’s reception on Saturday, July 8, from 5-7pm.

This body of work, consisting of five paintings, continues Caitlin Lonegan’s use of the full spectrum of hues, a range of application techniques, and her interest in spatial illusion that can come from patterned mark-making. To begin each painting, Lonegan maps out fields of shape and color. With each successive mark of oil paint, she transcribes what she

sees—the shifting light in her studio, a glint of color on the surface of a glass, an odd city line—onto the canvas. Responding to the visuals around her and to the gessoed surface of the canvas, Lonegan builds slow textures that refract both the world and her direct experience of it.

Polychromic includes works that maintain Lonegan’s compositional tendency to leave a central gesso-white abyss and works that abandon this device in favor of entirely paint-covered surfaces. Lonegan’s approach to creating illusionistic space draws upon muscle memory accrued from recreating Impressionist and Renaissance artworks—a time-honored exercise for young artists learning how to paint.

Jun Kaneko

This major exhibition features glazed and Raku-fired ceramics and large-scale paintings by internationally renowned artist Jun Kaneko. His initial start as a painter is evident in his sculpture, where monolithic ceramic “dangos” (the Japanese word for dumpling) become threedimensional, inflated canvases. His graphic, yet painterly, lines and dots are analogous with the Japanese Shinto concept of the “Ma,” which loosely translates into “attachment through space.” Through intentional repetition of brushstrokes and motifs, Kaneko creates a kind of abstract imagery that is recognizable and uniquely his. This exhibition will also present never-before-seen, small-scale sculptures from the artist’s private collection. Kaneko’s work can be found in more than 100 museum collections and institutions worldwide.

Tom Hammick

Painter and printmaker Tom Hammick presents his first solo exhibition at Gail Severn Gallery with recent work. All prints are individually handmade by the artist in small editions through traditional relief or intaglio processes. His exceptional skill in the medium is evident in the multitude of bold colors he incorporates and the magnificent scale of certain works. Hammick’s painting practice is symbiotically linked to that of his printing, relying on the dynamic tension between positive and negative space. He approaches his paintings with confidence and puts intention behind each mark, carving into the canvas like he would a woodblock. Hammick richly illustrates visionary scenes, often with ambiguous narratives, including mysterious figures. These emotive panoramas range from dreamy, romantic, and heroic to lonely, contemplative, and nostalgic, with a strong sense of longing. Hammick invites the viewer on what feels like a fantastic journey home.

PLEASE TOUCH THE ART

July 7

Exhibition Opening | 5-7:30pm

Friesen+Lantz Fine Art kicks off our bold summer season with an immersive, hands-on exhibition titled “Please Touch the Art.” Visitors to the gallery will each be given a pair of white gloves upon their arrival and will be allowed to physically touch every artwork in the show. From engaging with ceramic sculptures to carvings, glass, and more, we hope this format will bring a deeper understanding of process and bridge the gap between intrigue and ownership. Featured artists include sculptors Dennis Evans + Nancy Mee, glass weaver Anna Skibska, encaustic artist Suzanne Hazlett, and ceramicist Patrick Hall.

“Directness, contrast, organized, contextual, resolved, contemplative are qualities I pursue for my work,” says Hall. “My aesthetic concerns revolve around an object’s presence, its posture, how the object affects or commands the space around it, its function and efficiency in articulating itself, as well as where it fits into the heredity of its genre. These principles apply to the design of a house or a humble tea bowl, and everything in between. The work at its best reveals what and how the material best expresses itself through the making process without ornamentation or fussiness.”

RECREATION

July 7

Opening Night Reception | 5-7:30pm

Hemmings Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Sally King Benedict, the first in her new hometown of Ketchum. For the past 15 years, Benedict has built an impressive following with major shows in Atlanta, Charleston, and New York. Known for her figurative and abstract work, she has been featured in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Domino, and Southern Living. Benedict’s exuberant style is unmistakable and showcases her expert use of color and dynamic brushwork.

Benedict and her family moved to Ketchum from Atlanta in 2021. She’s thrilled to present her first body of work inspired by life in the Wood River Valley.

“I have come to realize that the ways I now recreate have also, in fact, re-created me. This body of work reflects my transition as an artist to a new home over the last two years with imagery inspired by a totally new landscape…one which exists simultaneously between humans and Mother Nature. I have experienced a new viewpoint amongst this community, all while bringing a new baby into the world. I am in a constant state of exhale and disbelief that we get to live here. These paintings reflect my respect for the community here and the way people surrender to the earth and its abundance.”

PIONEER SALOON

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.

In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this summer include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams and garlic, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh Alaskan halibut, seared ahi salad, spicy sesame noodle bowl and fresh Willapa Bay steamer clams, to name just a few.

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and summer evenings on the outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

Dine on the outdoor patio or step inside the bar and restaurant, full of locals and visitors alike looking to connect over one of the wooden tables with dishes like Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, or an Old-Fashioned Bar Burger. MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and

mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Executive Chef Laurent Loubot, who hails from Chalon-sur-Saone (Burgundy), presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital).

Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.

SUSHI ON SECOND

After over 30 years of serving the best sushi in Ketchum, Sushi on Second shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to crafting amazing sushi rolls like the SOS or the Who’s Your Daddy, the chefs at Sushi on Second also whip up other Asian-influenced delights, like Hoisin Lemon-Glazed King Salmon with Sesame Seeds, Baby Bok Choy and Scallion Rice, Spinach Batayaki (sautéed spinach, red bell peppers, garlic, onions, fresh shitake mushrooms with a soy and rice wine dressing), and their SOS-Style Hawaiian Ribs.

Sushi on Second also serves wine, beer, and sake. The praise for this restaurant comes from far and wide. Bon Appetit magazine writes, “Sushi on Second, the best sushi I’ve had in years,” and, framed in the entryway is a menu on which Julia Child wrote, “Bon appetit to Sushi on Second.” Come visit and learn for yourself why a restaurant in Ketchum, Idaho, is making its mark on the sushi world.

THE GRILL AT KNOB HILL

From their days as owners of the iconic Warm Springs Ranch to today as owners of The Grill at Knob Hill, Bob and Jolie Dunn understand that pleasing their customers is the key to getting them to come back. Longtime favorites like fried chicken, prime rib, Idaho trout, and a new twist on the beloved Warm Springs scones and honey butter (now popovers and honey butter) have created a loyal following at this beautiful spot. The warm and friendly bar is a welcoming place to relax with neighbors, local bartenders, and hotel guests. Handcrafted cocktails, small plates, or a wonderful bottle of wine and dinner make this a favorite local hangout. Come enjoy the bar after an active day or enjoy the open-style dining room, seven nights a week. Offering curbside takeout on the full menu. KETCHUM GRILL

The Ketchum Grill celebrates 31 years “new” this season, meaning they’ve been serving locally-sourced, comforting fare for three decades in their quintessential Ketchum historic house. If you need a little inspiration about what to order, chefs Scott and Anne Mason along with new partner, Kaari Harlamert, recommend the hand-shaped burger cooked over fruitwood with a homemade bun and condiments, or the longtime favorite, house-made lemon noodles with rock shrimp and black pepper cream. You won’t be disappointed!
