EDITOR’S WELCOME

Celebrate Sun Valley Life Many of us travel in and out of the Valley for work, events, and family. I don’t know about you all, but I definitely you feel more gratitude when I return home and realize how good life is in Sun Valley. There’s nothing like arriving at an airport gate and knowing half the people in line. It’s a good feeling to know that you have a place in the world and things are ok. We have all had so many changes in the past two years, flipping us upside-down and sideways, that for a moment, when a familiar face recognizes you among a sea of people, it feels really good. Sun Valley is that and more. It is a home. It is a good life. Although things have changed, and it is even harder than ever to live here, it is still a welcoming place in the universe. Whether it’s saying hello on a trail, in the aisle at Atkinsons’, or passing through Ketchum’s Town Square, to be part of a community makes a difference. Community sentiment abounds for SVPN’s January 2022 issue, and celebrations are aplenty. We welcome Sun Valley Resort’s new General Manager, Pete Sonntag, and his family. Luckily, we still get to see Tim Silva on the property, who has led us to not one but two years with Sun Valley as SKI Magazine’s Top Resort. Read all about Pete in this issue. And don’t miss the Sun Valley Resort’s holiday festivities for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Celebrating five years as Ketchum’s community hot spot to meet and stay, the Limelight Hotel Ketchum is rolling out party plans throughout the winter season. Read about the Limelight’s community service and support they give, as they are a significant entity in downtown Ketchum and to the Valley as a whole. As the list of anniversaries continues, we celebrate Zenergy Health Club & Spa for a significant milestone of 20 years. We have dedicated 15 pages to Zenergy’s incredible support of athletes, community, and people, which photographer Daniel Leeds captures in stunning black and white portraits combined with a few of Tal Roberts’ incredible action shots. We congratulate Andria Friesen and her 35 years in Ketchum at the Friesen Gallery. To celebrate this momentous occasion and time of change, Friesen will have a new exhibition with artist Lawrence Fodor, who has been an artist with Friesen for 35 years. It is a long-time friendship and professional relationship that is a beautiful story and full of inspiration. Read about the future of the Friesen Gallery and how Fodor’s Increscent show is one not to miss

attend, including the Led Zeppelin tribute band, Zoso, who will perform at The Argyros. The January 2022 SVPN Magazine features all of our regular contributors with Dr. Molly Brown’s advice on making it through the holidays and into the new year in good health, and St. Luke’s offers some thoughts on the common New Year’s resolution of dieting. Each is an exciting read, especially in conjunction with our feature on skin care specialist Reini Greene, who offers advice on skincare in the high-desert climes of southcentral Idaho. Also, read up on this year’s Boulder Mountain Tour 2022 event and find out what’s happening at the Sun Valley Film Festival. Grab a pass to this Valley’s premier event or think about supporting it to attend in movie star style or at least rub elbows with some. Enjoy this holiday season with loved ones and friends. Take time to help others and stay healthy and safe to take on 2022. Happy holidays and cheers to a new year!

Join OCHI Gallery for its annual New Year’s Eve show with Devin Farrand. Farrand’s Warm Up exhibition is a perspective with great insight. Check out SVPN’s Now Showing and Arts Etc. to find something you want to svpn-mag.com

A percentage of all purchases will support the Environmental Resource Center, 43 North, and Girls on the Run in the Wood River Valley. The Annual Christmas Eve Ice Show also returns this year with members of our Sun Valley skating community performing to music ranging from Christmas classics to modern favorites, complete with a performance from the beloved Sun Valley Carolers. All proceeds from the event will be donated to our community food center, The Hunger Coalition, and the I Have A Dream Foundation, which supports the educational success of underserved children. Doors open at 4:30pm, and the show begins at 5:30pm. Immediately following the Ice Show, the torchlight parade will wind down Dollar Mountain. Finally, the evening’s festivities will culminate in a grand finale of fireworks. The parade and fireworks can be viewed from the Village, Ice Rink area, or the Pavilion Lot. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring back this magical tradition on Christmas Eve for our community and PHOTOS BY SUN VALLEY RESORT

Thank you, Jessica and Mike! Your navigation guided me through a nerve-wracking transition, from casually looking to committed in a very compressed seven-day time frame. As a result, I own the perfect condo

in the ideal location—and at a good price. You both made the process of making a series of significant decisions as easy as it could be done, especially in such a challenging market. I appreciated that you two were with me every step of the way and even stocked the fridge with goodies when I took possession. I had a great experience! -Diana Rathborne

In these past few months, we loved working with Mike and Jessica. First, they

marketed and sold our large home with attention to detail every step of the

BOULDER MOUNTAIN TOUR IS BACK By Danielle Vigueria

100

svpn-mag.com

After an all-virtual event last year, 2022 marks the in-person Zions Bank Boulder Mountain Tour (BMT) return, and the Valley is ready! The finish line announcer at the BMT for 25 years, Jody Zarkos, is now in her third year as race director and is especially excited to bring back the standard race format. “I’ve been involved in the race for a long time,” says Jody. “My favorite thing is the feeling of community the race creates, especially at the finish line. It is so heartwarming to watch people cross the line and celebrate their accomplishments. That pride and satisfaction seeps through everyone. Even though it’s an individual race, it’s a very collective event. I love the whole scope of what the BMT encompasses.” In its 49th year, the race’s mission is to promote cross-country skiing and raise interest in the sport. Oftentimes it seems as though Sun Valley is associated with alpine skiing, but Jody and the team at BMT want people to know that the cross-country skiing here is also world-class. With awe-inspiring trails and remarkable facilities, the Wood River Valley is full of opportunities for professional and citizen skiers alike. Although everyone seems ready to ski and celebrate in Sun Valley on the first Saturday in February, BMT will be keeping their virtual component as well this year. To participate, individuals can ski a 15K or 30K course of their choice February 1-6, wherever they are. The only limitation is that virtual participants may not ski the official racecourse on February 5. With the slogan “Our Boulder, Your Backyard,” last year’s event attracted 713 skiers from around the globe, with entrants from as far away as Switzerland and Sweden. “We were so thrilled to learn last year that we could still create community and camaraderie without having the race in person,” says Jody. “It was such a difficult year with the pandemic. But, I think people were grateful for something positive to focus their attention on and train for. The BMT is a feel-good event for everyone, and that definitely translated to the virtual event. We were so happy to be able to create that enthusiasm and excitement during such a challenging time.” The live race in 2022 will still have COVID-19 safety-top of-mind. The field will be limited to 800 skiers (600 for the Full Boulder and 200 for the Half ), allowing for thoughtful staggering of the waves and the provided transportation. With those precautions in place, this year’s race will follow the traditional route from Galena and finish across from the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Visitor’s Center, with tracks for classic skiers and adaptive athletes. New this year, the 15K Half Boulder race will now be named the Charley Course in honor of 97-year-old athlete Charley

French. Born in St. Louis in the 1920s, Charley fought in World War II, is an accomplished triathlete, and has competed all but four years in the BMT. “Charley is a local icon and a BMT age-class champion many times over,” says Jody. “He is a great embodiment of the spirit of our race, and we’re proud to be able to recognize him in this way.” The supportive character of the race is also reflected in BMT’s support of other non-profit organizations. Through their “Ski It Forward” award, BMT donated funds to 10 NPOs in 2021 as voted on by race participants. They included Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, Bogus Basin Nordic, Community Shares of Wisconsin, Idaho Food Bank, The Advocates, The Hunger Coalition, Meissner Nordic, Higher Ground, and Habitat for Humanity. BMT plans to continue the “Ski It Forward” award in 2022 in recognition of the vital role that nonprofit organizations play in inspiring hope and taking action to bring about change. The 49th Boulder Mountain Tour will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2022. The BMT Block Party and Awards Bash will

follow the race at Ketchum Town Square from 5-7:30pm. The 2022 award categories will include youngest and oldest skiers, best costume, and the Jon Engen award for most significant time improvement based on the 2020 race. The Full Boulder will present $2,500 to the fastest man and woman, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third. The race entry fee includes race bags, official 2022 BMT SWIX race hat, event program, sponsored goods, a raffle ticket, a 10-week training program for beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers, and the opportunity to win great prizes from event sponsors. For virtual participants, official courses will be set at several ski areas in the United States, including Soldier Hollow, Utah, and Meissner Ski Area in Oregon. In addition, virtual participants will have their own awards and raffle contest via livestream on Monday, February 7. • For more information, visit bouldermoutaintour.com. svpn-mag.com

SUN VALLEY RESORT WELCOMES PETE SONNTAG AS NEW GENERAL MANAGER AND VICE PRESIDENT By Sabina Dana Plasse

Whether you are on a chairlift, in River Run Lodge, or walking around the Sun Valley Resort Village, you will likely see Pete Sonntag, Sun Valley Resort’s new Vice President and General Manager, and he may seem very familiar to you. It’s as if you know him from somewhere. That’s because of Pete’s ability to understand people is remarkable. He intuitively and consistently connects with others, a skill that comes from years of offering quality service at mountain resorts, including checking in with customers walking the grounds, and ensuring all employees are doing okay. It’s all second nature for him. And I felt it immediately when I had the pleasure of meeting him in early November. Pete’s desire to live in the mountains and be part of the ski business has earned him a rightful place as Sun Valley Resort’s General Manager and Vice President. “I have always wanted to be where I am today in Sun Valley,” he says. “I started as a grounds maintenance worker at the Beaver Creek Golf Course and worked my way up from there.” Pete was also a ski instructor and went on to excel in leadership roles at several acclaimed mountain destinations in North America, such as Whistler Blackcomb and Heavenly. And he served as a Ski School Director at Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, and Copper Mountain in Colorado, to name a few.

“When I started teaching skiing, I never imagined I would end up where I am today,” he says. “However, it is an incredible way to see the a resort through the guest’s experience because you spend a great deal of time with them and see it through their eyes—whether it is a full-day or a week-long private lesson. When you spend multiple days with guests, you get to know them, their history, why they came to the resort, what keeps them coming back, what they like, and don’t like. When you have the opportunity to have such feedback, 120 days a season, over the years, you can make informed opinions on what matters to guests.” Handling front-line staff, guest feedback, and demands of the resort business, Pete found the challenge of this balancing act to be very rewarding. With great mentors and support, he found himself excelling in his role as general manager. “More than anything, it’s about being a great listener,” he says. “Being respectful of people and where they come from, and their expectations requires more listening than talking. Knowing what it takes to make a great mountain vacation is how we rally our team to deliver it.” Learning that you don’t have all the answers was part of Pete’s growth, especially as general manager. “It’s important to the team and me to have fun in what we do,” he says. “I appreciate and respect the people I have the opportunity to work with, and there’s a clear mission for us to deliver upon, which is guest satisfaction and to deliver the experience. It’s what motivates me every day.” Every mountain resort is unique and has its special and particular attributions, which Pete has acknowledged in every role he has assumed. “I am very excited to learn about Sun Valley in my new position during this upcoming winter season,” he says. “A place like Sun Valley shines during this time. Enormous crowds do not burden us. Skiing and 106

snowboarding have never been more appreciated than they are now. It is an amazing community, and the workforce is committed to preserving it. We can do it, we do it well, and I would argue better than anyone else.” Since everyone’s health has been at the forefront recently, a new appreciation for outdoor recreation and, in particular, the ski industry, has been reinvigorated. And it helps that Sun Valley was just recognized by SKI Magazine as the number-one ski resort in North America for the second year in a row, which is an incredible accomplishment. “Taking care of yourself and finding the activities that make you happy and feel good is no longer an afterthought,” says Pete. “Spending quality time with the people you love, doing things you like to do is why Sun Valley is as good a venue as anywhere in the world to do that.” Pete adds, “What I love about this job is the diversity of the Resort’s offerings and all the different conversations I am part of because it all drives to the same purpose, which is making the experience for the guest an awesome one. The impact we can have on people’s lives is profound. It’s what motivates me every day, and I can’t wait to come to work and watch it happen.” With his wife and three children, all of whom share a passion for the outdoors, Pete now makes Sun Valley his home and will continue to make Sun Valley Resort stand out as a family-owned, independent resort focused on its loyal guests, employees, and the Wood River Valley. • sunvalley.com

ENVISAGE MODERN SKINCARE French-trained skin specialist Reini Greene leads the way By Sabina Dana Plasse | Photos by Halsey Pierce

Unfortunately, the signs of aging show up like a lit-up billboard on our skin. For many individuals who live in the Mountain West, caring for one’s skin requires a dedicated daily regime. The western sun is intense, the high-desert air is dry, and the mountain’s four seasons of varying weather, including summer wildfire smoke, can wreak havoc on our skin. As we age and face the new elements that seem to be part of our 21st-century world, modern skincare must accommodate it. Luckily, Sun Valley has become a home for Reini Greene, a professional skincare consultant and aesthetician who has studied with renowned Annemarie Camenzind, founder of the Euro Institute of Skin Care, and is a master in European skincare treatment. Reini is trained and certified exclusively for Biologique Recherche skincare, a revered and distinguished skincare product line from Paris, France. In addition, she is an Ayurvedic practitioner and has developed her own line of herbal body treatment oils and fragrances. With over 27 years of experience in skincare, Reini’s approach to her business and serving her clients as an aesthetician is centered in her belief that beauty is a mind-body lifestyle. In the past 12 years, she has been exclusive to the Biologique Recherche French method of skin care and treatment for which she trained extensively in Paris. 108

Top: Reini only uses natural oils and bontanicals for her body oil. Opposite page: Reini Modern Skin Care is an exclusive retailer of Biologique Recherche products.

“Biologique Recherche is a French method of techniques that build upon the skin and refine its texture,” explains Reini. “You don’t want to over exfoilate your skin. Instead, it is about lightly exfoliating skin every day, twice a day, using ice-cold water to reduce inflammation along with massaging your face. We refine the texture of the skin with a gentle liquid exfoliation twice a day. This natural approach honors the 28-day cycle of the skin so that you see a refined texture and healthy glow. Through this method and treatment, new, fresh, plump skin cells rise to the surface. In addition, because these are botanical products, the skin ages well. It does not appear thin.” Reini’s approach of rebalancing and massaging skin is customized for each client. “I see a great deal of dry, chapped skin that is congested and irritated,” she says. “There’s overall redness and tightness, so lines are forming. People try and scrub it off or use invasive treatments when they need to nourish and feed their skin as well as work from the inside with green juices and whole foods.” 110

svpn-mag.com

Reini’s background in skincare is only one element to her approach to lifelong healthy and beautiful skin. Her dedication and impressive client treatment and experience place her in a unique position as a skincare professional. “Healthy skin is beautiful skin,” she says. “Your skin is the largest organ of your body. When people feel comfortable and good about their skin, it changes their life. I have helped people with acne, eczema, loss of elasticity, and aging skin, and it brings me great joy.” For Reini, who uses only the best products and applications for her skincare, this is only part of maintaining a beautiful complexion. “It’s what we eat, exercise, and how we approach our lives,” she says. “The goal is to maintain your face not change it. No soaps, gels, cleansers, or hot water. Eliminating these things will change your skin, and you will notice a difference.”

“Your goal is to maintain your face not change it.” —Reini Greene

From the moment you enter her treatment room, you become part of Reini’s practice. A calming, light space, her application room is comfortable and all-enveloping. And, Reini’s skin methods are genuinely magical as her hands take care of your needs. Her French approach is not so easily found in the far reaches of Idaho, but it is worth every moment and every penny. You leave with a glow like no other. Her dedication to Biologique Recherche, known the world over for its proven skincare methods from decades of doctors and scientists who stand behind it, is exceptional. Reini consistently studies and educates with clinical attendance yearly. Her dedication speaks for itself in her regular travel to New York and France. Reini understands the aging process and is a consultant on every aspect of skincare, a realm in which many of us

endeavor to keep a healthy complexion in place. “I do think injectables have their place,” she says. “However, the goal for injectables is to maintain, not change your face. A little maintenance with injectables can work perfectly with a customized skin regime. I have many clients who do not do injectables at all. Instead, we do facelift massage, microneedling, and microcurrent. I have found that overall, it is best to strengthen and aid circulation rather than stopping it, which is what injectables like Botox and filler do.” Reini suggests two routines for her clients—in the morning and once at night. Each time you massage your face, use cold water and concentrated creams, which are excellent for healing and can be mixed when it’s frigid outside. She also recommends body oil, which has become very popular and is making a big entrance into the everyday skin routine. She has created her own with pure natural essential oils and botanicals. “Body oil nourishes the body and when applied in the shower it works the best because the warm water seals the oil into your skin for the day,” she says. “It keeps your skin feeling subtle when you use it in the shower with water. Everything comes together when you take the time for yourself and have a skin routine that is best for your lifestyle.” Since Reini has clients who live in different places, she offers FaceTime consultations. With 15-minute complimentary consultations, she will assess skin conditions and advise on skin regimes incorporating products already in use and suggesting new products. “Virtual consulting has been wonderful for new and existing clients,” she says. “I am able to schedule customized at-home routines and advisement on spa treatment options and answer questions about injectables and medical spa treatments.” •

When the doors to the Limelight Hotel Ketchum opened five years ago, it ushered in a new downtown vibe. Today, the sparkling, modern, and community-friendly hotel has not only added to the Ketchum experience, it has also become an essential part of the Wood River Valley in unimaginable ways.

de L’Arbre. “As the relationship evolved, the Limelight Hotel Ketchum became a reliable place for many of the Wood River Valley’s nonprofit events. They host gatherings and embrace the Limelight’s community living room. Popular events such as the free summer live music series Ketch’em Alive became part of Limelight Hotel Ketchum experience.”

At first, long-time locals were apprehensive toward a big corporation like the Aspen Skiing Company planting a flag as the welcoming edifice to town. It was not just its height that raised eyebrows. It was also the Aspen Skiing Company mothership landing now in Sun Valley. Aspen in Idaho had a bit of a stigma for some.

The design of the Limelight Hotel Ketchum, with its spacious Lounge bar as a community gathering spot, attracts locals and visitors nightly. For hotel guests, it’s also the spot to enjoy a complimentary plentiful morning breakfast buffet to fuel up for the day. Plus there’s access to the pool and hot tubs, which is a skier’s delight in winter. In the evening, the Lounge has a full bar with a well-rounded menu that includes craft cocktails and the Limelight’s popular wood-fired gourmet pizzas, along with a variety of delectable food choices. It is a place where locals and visitors mingle, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.

“We moved into town with some skepticism from the community that Aspen Skiing Company was coming in and placing the largest hotel at the entrance to Ketchum,” tells Limelight Hotels Public Relations Senior Manager Meaghan

There is a great deal to celebrate for the Limelight Hotel Ketchum in terms of the guest experience, especially offering a top-notch ski and mountain experience. “It’s in our DNA,” says Limelight Hotel Ketchum Director of Sales Tim Johnson. “From the design of the hotel’s community spaces to activities and adventure offerings, we aim to satisfy the active visitors and guests who have their own agendas. There are a great many guests who return and new people who are still discovering the hotel. We hope to do even more in the next five years to make the experience more inviting to all of them.” The Limelight Hotel Ketchum was built with guest residences, for thoose choosing to be part of the hotel’s rental program. There are many amenities an owner can enjoy at the hotel, which is especially appealing for those who may not enjoy shoveling and need an extra place for family members to go. Guest rooms offer plush bedding, spacious modern bathrooms, and plenty of places to put things away as well as spread out belongings. From proper lighting and night tables to a utensil-stocked wet bar and microwave, the Limelight Hotel Ketchum spares no detail for convenience and thoughtful travel accommodations— this also includes garage parking. The hotel’s original, contemporary art adorns hallways and spaces, which are part of the Aspen Skiing Company’s collection. The 114

collection does change, and it is worthwhile to stroll around for a look, especially if you want to wander about the hotel. Another perk to the hotel is that it is pet-friendly and accommodates kids with a playroom off the Lounge. There is also gear to rent, borrow, and use depending upon the season, and there’s really nothing that the hotel cannot accommodate. A friendly, knowledgeable staff is always ready to help and then some—upholding that small-town connection in every way. The hotel has also served as the convenient location for many board meetings and gatherings with well-appointed rooms that can expand and contract for any purpose and need. It has filled a niche in downtown Ketchum for a much-needed gathering space. In addition, the Lounge has been a choice for numerous events, including festivals, balls, fundraisers, and film screenings including Trailing of the Sheep Festival, Sun Valley Wellness Festival, and Rebecca’s Private Idaho to name a few. A sponsor and supporter of events, athletes, and so much more, the Limelight Hotel Ketchum has proved its mettle as an entity that today’s Ketchum would be lost without. “Limelight Hotel Ketchum was Aspen Skiing Company’s first endeavor outside of the Roaring Fork Valley and we

could not be more proud of everything that the team in Ketchum has accomplished over the past five years. We are truly honored to be a part of the Wood River Valley and we are grateful for the warm welcome we have received from the community. It’s awesome to see so many locals treating the hotel as their community living room and whenever I have the chance to visit it feels like home. That was our original goal and we look forward to sustaining that sense of community for many years to come,” says Aspen Skiing Company Chief Executive Officer Mike Kaplan. Since the Limelight Hotel Ketchum opened in 2016, it has supported the Wood River Valley through the Limelight Ketchum Community Fund. In five years, the Fund has donated over $123,000 to various organizations throughout the Valley. This fund is dedicated to supporting communities in the Wood River Valley. Established in 2016, the employee board met with community organizations to deepen their understanding of Wood River Valley issues. As a result, they chose to focus on mental health, domestic abuse, education, and organizations whose work addresses those in crisis (emotional, physical, or otherwise). svpn-mag.com

The Fund is financed by contributions from the Limelight Hotel Ketchum’s operations, through an optional paycheck deduction with employees and by guests through an optional $1-per-night donation. The board of directors and Limelight Hotel Ketchum employees determine which qualified applicants receive a grant. Grant cycles are once annually and support up to 13 organizations, which include The Senior Connection, The Advocates, and Girls on the Run of the Wood River Valley. Before COVID-19, the Limelight Hotel Ketchum hosted an annual luncheon to distribute grant money and inviting recipients—this too will return, as there’s nothing like giving money to deserving folks and organizations. When COVID-19 occurred, the Limelight Hotel Ketchum decided to give additional support to a few organizations to help them get back on their feet during this critical time. When the hotel was able to reopen its doors, they donated $15,000 to local organizations outside of their normal grant cycle to help these essential organizations provide vital support to the community. The donation was parceled as $5,000 to The Hunger Coalition, $5,000 to The Senior Connection Meals on Wheels Program, $2,500 to NAMI 116

(National Alliance on Mental Illness), and $2,500 to the Crisis Hotline. Always seeking avenues to contribute to the Valley’s causes and needs, the hotel donated all of their patio furniture to Camp Rainbow Gold this past summer. In addition, hotel employees are given two paid days for volunteer hours to the organization of their choice. Aspen Skiing Company has also launched an environment fund to take care of the community. “We decided to continue services with no lapse and no funding with the hopes and prayers for community and business support,” says The Senior Connection Executive Director Teresa Beahan Lipman. “Our organization does not have bottomless pockets, so we have been funding our services week by week and month by month. We have grown 382%, and these funds were much needed and greatly appreciated. The Limelight is a community player, and we love it!” “From day one, we have been committed to putting the community first at Limelight Hotel Ketchum. Five years after opening, I firmly believe that we have followed through on that commitment. It has been tremendous to

watch the incredible growth over the years. The property has truly evolved into the ‘community living room’ in Ketchum and we look forward to carrying that forth for the next five years,” says Limelight Hotel Ketchum General Manager John Curnow. By addressing seasonal worker housing issues, the hotel can take care of its staff needs and welfare. “We are a community player and looking for ways to improve the community and work on community issues such as housing—we recently secured a number of tiny homes for employees—Limelight Hotel Ketchum has three tiny homes lined up for December to house six to eight J1 workers. On top of these, we also have a two-bedroom condo in town to house five and a one-bedroom mobile home in The Meadows,” says Curnow. To celebrate its fifth anniversary and the accomplishments and support of the hotel in Ketchum, there are big plans to roll out loads of hospitality, fun, and gifts. Wood is the fiveyear gift for anniversaries, so the Limelight Hotel Ketchum will be handing out wooden coins that will be good for a complimentary wine or beer in the Lounge. The coins will

be randomly distributed throughout town and throughout the season to “surprise and delight” folks in Limelight fashion. In addition, the hotel has planned some more fun where certain special coins will be hidden to find and will be good for sponsor gifts such as new goggles and other fun and desirable ski town items. So, start checking social media beginning December 28, the official Limelight Hotel Ketchum anniversary date, for clues. Also, during January, when you stay at the hotel, you can receive your fifth night free. And, keep an eye out for an après celebration at the end of the ski season on the hotel’s patio for the locals to celebrate the fifth year. • Limelight Hotel Ketchum 151 S. LED ZEPPELIN TRIBUTE BAND ZOSO HONORS 50 YEARS OF MUSIC By Sabina Dana Plasse Photos by Patrick Perkins Photography

The music of Led Zeppelin lives on in great reverence with each new generation of music lovers who discover it. The band, like no other, delivered sound, lyrics, and sensational rock ‘n’ roll on every level of music appreciation. It is classic rock that is well-preserved and enjoyed throughout the world. You know when a Led Zeppelin song is on the way from just a few simple opening chords. From the “oh, yeahs” of “Black Dog” to the mind-bending, meandering sound of “No Quarter” and the beauty of “Stairway to Heaven,” and that familiar beat of “Kashmir.” And there are so many more incredible songs that have filled our airways for decades, are included in those favorite shuffles on our devices, and keep spinning on turntables. Vocalist Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist/ keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham offered heavy, guitar-driven sound, establishing bequeathing Led Zeppelin as the forebears of hard rock and heavy metal music. Yet, the group was influenced by every genre of music, especially blues and folk music. The band had a steady release of eight albums over ten years until they disbanded due to the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980. Yet even today, Led Zeppelin continues to be lauded by old and new followers alike, as do new remastered releases and many samples and covers by significant

musicians of our time. As a result, Led Zeppelin is considered one of the best-selling musical acts ever, with their record sales estimated between 200 to 300 million units worldwide. The band’s debut, top-selling 1969 self-entitled album, Led Zeppelin, which included “Good Times Bad Times,” “Dazed and Confused,” and “Communication Breakdown,” was only the beginning of their many legendary releases. More hits came with “Ramble On” and “Whole Lotta Love” from Led Zeppelin II, followed by the “Immigrant Song” from Led Zeppelin III and then their fourth album, Led Zeppelin IV, considered to be the band’s most widely known and best-selling album of all time. Songs from this record include “Black Dog,” “Rock and Roll,” and “Stairway to Heaven,” which could be the most influential and most known song in rock and roll history. Led Zeppelin followed this success with Houses of the Holy, providing us with “The Ocean,” “Over the Hills and Far Away,” and “The Rain Song.” And their double album, Physical Graffiti, presented “Trampled Under Foot” and “Kashmir.” These albums and songs were masterpieces and remain so. Tribute bands have their place and role more than ever as time rolls on. Zoso, the most famous Led Zeppelin tribute band, was formed in 1995, and has never looked back on choosing to be the ultimate Led Zeppelin experience. In sound, function, and form, Zoso fills that live music sensation so

many of us crave not only for Led Zeppelin fans but also for everyone missing live music in recent times. Zoso band members in their respective positions are: Matt Jernigan (Robert Plant), John McDaniel ( Jimmy Page), Adam Sandling ( John Paul Jones), and Bevan Davies ( John Bonham). They have made it their life’s passion to be authentic as possible in their live performances as Led Zeppelin. “We are as passionate about the music as ever,” says Jernigan. “The music is timeless, and everyone appreciates it. It has superb composition, and it is also very demanding. It speaks to everyone, and there’s a place for everyone in the music because it’s so diversified. In its 27th year, Zoso is a very tight band, which allows them to tour and continue their passion for delivering the Led Zeppelin experience. “Even though we all live in different places, our dedication and genuine compatibility allow us to perform at a very high level, which the music demands,” says Jernigan. “We’re always in our element. It’s a high bar of music to reach, but we have the right combination as a band for it. We’re confident and competent.” Each band member portrays their Led Zeppelin counterpart’s appearance and playing styles. Over time, as Zoso has played svpn-mag.com

over 2,400 live shows worldwide, including at major and notable festivals such as Bonnaroo and Rib America Fest, the band continues to be held in great esteem. “Led Zeppelin has no weak link, so this is what’s required of us,” Jernigan says. “We never do the same set twice. We play the songs that the audience wants to hear but never in the same order, which keeps it fresh. Many of the song titles are

never in the song. It was about the subject matter because the intention of Led Zeppelin’s music is to take you on a journey. There are fans of the band, and then there are fans of the songs. We try to give our best performance to both. In addition, we perform many of the band’s live versions to expand upon the music for the experience.” Zoso recreates the aura and feel of Led Zeppelin. Using vintage instruments and spot-on vocals, guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, the band creates a stage persona and, of course, that all-familiar and desired distinct Led Zeppelin sound. “When you were growing up, and you heard Led Zeppelin songs, you knew how good they were,” says Jernigan. “When we delved into the music, broke it down, dissected it, and recreated it, we realized that members of Led Zeppelin were masters. It’s unbelievable how they produced their music with such a high level of creativity. It takes an enormous amount of time to perfect the notes and nuances that differentiated Led Zeppelin from any other band of their time. It is what makes them one the greatest bands of all time. They were a close-knit group of storytellers and musicians.” •

WINTER IS OPEN

At Mountain Village Resort By Lori Williams

If holiday withdrawals have set in or big city life south of Galena has you woundup, then head for the winter-white quiet of the Sawtooth Valley for a refresh of the spirit. Winter fun is up and running at the Mountain Village Resort. At the entrance to Stanley, the resort has long been a welcoming outpost for high-altitude comfort and charm, and owners Russell and Mandy Clark are passionate about service in this place they call home. Mountain Village Resort is the perfect haven and basecamp for all winter adventures, with a 61-room lodge, suite-style log cabins, a mercantile, gas and service station, RV park, restaurant, events, and music. And, of course, the hot springs. If ripping into 2022 with and all the bold, cold activities you can wrangle sounds good, then paradise waits for you too. There’s plenty of adventure to be had—Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, hot springs soaking, snowshoeing, ice skating, pond hockey, backcountry skiing. Stanley doesn’t close down for the winter. Though often the coldest locale in the nation in the winter, the hearts of this hardy, close-knit community 122

are warm and welcoming for your visit to their neck of the woods. You’ll find miles of untouched snowfields and crisp, sunny days, with all levels of riding terrain for sled heads— rentals available through Sawtooth Traxx. “Our hot springs, alone, in the middle of winter, is a good enough reason for a mini-vacation to Stanley as long as a little walk in the snow doesn’t bother you,” says Mountain Village Resort owner Mandy Clark. Mountain Village Resort is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Says Clark, “Stanley is a quick trip from the Wood River, Magic, and Treasure Valleys, of course with road conditions and weather permitting.” With menu items the likes of cowboy-approved chicken fried steak, ribeyes, Red Flannel hash (with a little kale), the 7C Breakfast Burrito, and house-baked cinnamon rolls, you and your soul will go home well-fed.

The resort’s Velvet Falls Dance Hall is a mecca for musical entertainment and the latest and greatest gathering space for community parties, with trivia nights resuming on Fridays beginning January 7. In addition, Boise-based band Tylor and the Train Robbers will bring free live music on New Year’s Eve to welcome 2022 in their roots country and modern Americana music style. The epic Sawtooth Outdoor Bonspiel (SOB) happens January 28-30. This weekend event, hosted by the Boise Curling Club, is so popular that this year’s registration sold out in a record 43 seconds! The cheering of on-and off-ice activities is worth the trip alone. “Curlers from all over the country, sometimes even Canada, come to enjoy this three-day tournament at Stanley’s unique outdoor ice rink,” says Clark. Early February events include Superbowl Sunday, February 6, with the game shown on the big screen in Velvet Falls Dance Hall, including food and drink specials and a lively party atmosphere. In addition, the Stanley Skating Club’s 5th Annual Draw Pond Hockey Tournament takes place February 4-6, with registration open beginning in January. If you’re planning a trek to the Stanley area throughout the winter, Mountain Village Resort is offering a 10% booking discount with the mention of SVPN Magazine, available through April 30. • New Year’s Eve Party Velvet Falls Dance Hall Friday, December 31, 9pm

FRIESEN GALLERY’S FINAL EXHIBITION MARKS A MILESTONE & CELEBRATES 35 YEARS OF REPRESENTING ARTIST LAWRENCE FODOR By Sabina Dana Plasse

fine art

Phoenix for Henri and Achilles by Lawrence Fodor. Oil and alkyd resin on canvas, 2019–21, 84” x 82”.

Friesen Gallery’s 35th anniversary coincides with its final exhibition, Increscent, an important and exciting body of work from nationally recognized painter Lawrence Fodor. Fodor is the sole artist represented since the gallery was founded by Andria Friesen in 1986, and his work shall comprise the entire gallery for this significant closing event. While Fodor’s career is widely recognized, the considerable following in this community for his work is extraordinary. This unique exhibition—and occasion—promises to be memorable.

“A 35-year continuous representation in this industry is exceptionally rare and the symbiotic history Fodor and I share is remarkable,” says Friesen. Two-plus years in the making, Increscent was a carefully chosen title for this body of work. “These paintings are about gathering, accumulating, and integrating diverse visual elements to fuel expansive growth and infinite possibility. Increscent is cumulative, deepening, waxing—the act of becoming full,” says Fodor. “It is multifaceted, referring not only to an extension of the premise with which I have worked over the last few years but also my methodology in painting.” Lawrence Fodor’s first solo exhibition at Friesen Gallery was in 1987, and the work he was creating then was entirely based in Southwestern imagery—predominantly kachinas, ceremonial dancers, and medicine men and women. Though the artist was deeply entrenched in the Native American culture, he eventually realized he needed to find a more personal vernacular. svpn-mag.com

135

Classically trained with roots in California and the Bay Area Figurative Movement, Fodor notes the work of David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, and Nathan Oliveira as supremely influential in his development. Fodor’s well-documented shift from Native American imagery to his present body of work is both intense and exciting. Friesen Gallery was pivotal in this change due to the unique bond of trust and respect that Lawrence and Andria share. “The astounding progression of my career is, in part, due to the consistent carte blanche given to me by Friesen Gallery,” says Fodor. “No questions asked, ever. Full support, always.” This too is rare for the gallerist and artist relationship. Upon opening her gallery in Ketchum, many of the collectors Andria was meeting had primary residences in the greater Seattle area. Friesen had not been to Idaho prior to 1986, and the same was true four years later for Washington State—where she opened her second location in 1990. Fodor had numerous exhibitions and an impressive following in Seattle. Andria maintained Friesen Gallery Seattle for 23 years and still resides there part-time, citing it as her favorite city in America. Fodor’s Increscent challenges ideologies, perceptions, beliefs, and convictions. “Accepting that we are made by history within an increscent framework is where I find clues to suggest a more universally tolerant future by capturing the ancient and fusing the present,” says Fodor. Having traveled to Rome, Italy, this past year, Fodor was able to garner a great deal of inspiration from the Borghese Gallery and Museum. As a result of his visit, he was inspired to infuse his photographs of classic works within his paintings. “The Borghese has work from the Renaissance,” he says. “It’s spectacular, so the basis of the Fusion paintings that I created are photographs from its collection.” The architectural reconfigurations that Fodor creates are rooted in one’s own humanity, the structures in which we operate, and the unknown of what lies in space or in the afterlife. “The work for Increscent has taken a radical turn,” says Fodor. “It started as one thing and morphed into another.” Top: Fusion Borghese Roma 02 by Lawrence Fodor. fine art Fodor embraces history and the continuum of centuries of narrative visual art through the work for this newest exhibition. “I dissect those narratives to borrow and embody the relevant elements, then alter or discard that which is irrelevant,” he says. Fodor continues, “Acknowledging history, we learn to move forward and not emulate the past. Directed by history, I transform seductive contradictions into constructive affirmations while lingering in the persistent alchemical nature of painting.” With a bright palette of colors, deep layering, and a nod to the universe, Fodor’s style fully encompasses life and his incredibly meditative paintings meet the viewer where they are.

“I hold profound gratitude for all the artists I have worked with, and I feel equally blessed with the amazing staff I’ve had throughout the years. With all my heart I treasure the many resulting friendships with clients. The ride has been an honor.” —Andria Friesen

“Via Fodor’s paintings, I learned about shamanism, alchemy, ceremonial rituals, and rites of passage. His works on paper and canvas later introduced me to genetic memory and the powerful changing relationship between memory, place, and history. And, while I knew the paradoxical meaning of a kōan, it was Fodor’s mind and vision that took this somewhat esoteric idea and presented us with a physical manifestation in a Kōan Box—an ongoing series that is ever evolving,” explains Friesen. For Fodor, “The Kōan Box remains an integral part of my studio practice—they are the best palettes I have found, and I love discovering the endless possibilities of color combinations that are randomly revealed to me when paint builds upon them. They are the epitome of infinite variety.” In addition to Kōan Boxes and Fusion paintings, the oil paintings in Increscent have evolved from Fodor’s work surrounding the 2017 solar eclipse. “I realized that there are some aspects of painting that I left behind, others I moved forward, and a few I am revisiting now,” Fodor says. “But the overwhelming feel for this exhibition has to do with that continuum. The paintings are a celebration of both drawing from the past and working in the moment.” Friesen adds, “The laughter and tears Lawrence and I have shared over these 35 years are immeasurable. The paintings created and sold in this timeframe are remarkable. The many resulting friendships with clients will last a lifetime. The ride has been an honor.” On the first day of January 2022, Friesen Gallery shall become Friesen + Lantz Fine Art. “And though I shall have no ownership, via Friesen + Lantz, I very much look forward to continuing to work with clients, institutions, and museums,” says Friesen. “In 1986, Ketchum/Sun Valley was a foreign-tome community. I had never been to Idaho, nor did I know anyone who lived here. My gratitude for the welcome and ongoing support I have received is sincerely beyond my ability to articulate. Now 35 years later, the strangers are my family, and Sun Valley is my cherished home.” For more information on Increscent and Friesen Gallery’s final exhibition, visit friesengallery.com. •

ARTIST DEVIN FARRAND DECONSTRUCTS THE PUFFY COAT WITH WARM UP By Sabina Dana Plasse

There is a certain familiarity when looking at the paintings of Devin Farrand, especially those in Warm Up, Farrand’s solo show of new works at OCHI Gallery. Farrand has produced several works based on the “puffy” coat for Warm Up. A common winter accessory, down-filled jackets can be seen on individuals from the depths of an inner-city to the far reaches of the highest peaks on the planet. What is it about this garment that has allowed it to become a fixture at all levels of society?

In a very highly evolved conceptual show, Farrand’s aptly named Warm Up exhibition features paintings on wood panel, two-dimensional wall works made of reflective aluminum chromate, and marble works. In the vein of post-modern artists, Farrand’s focus on the texture and construction of the puffy in a stylized and detailed painting offers a new perspective and insight into a contemporary piece of clothing, which many wear as their winter uniform. As Farrand makes observations about puffy coat construction, one senses a deconstruction of humanity unfolding from the stitching, seams, and peaks and valleys of the puffy created from goose down and polyester. “The puffy is everywhere,” he says. “My previous work has been with marble carving and realistic oil painting in a Renaissance style with glazing. The subjects of Renaissance

portraits were draped in robes and fabrics, so these techniques were already familiar to me. The fabrics spoke volumes as status symbols, projecting and performing wealth through layers and drapery.” The wrinkles in Farrand’s paintings of puff jackets conjure the fleshy muscles of Greek and Roman gods draped in robes that emerge the same way as when an artist chiseled chunks from a block of marble. However, Farrand crops the puffy coats specifically to avoid the idea of a body wearing them. In his zoomed-in versions, the compositions could be mistaken for a topographic map, a microscopic view of a natural form, or even bodily organs. Farrand’s puff paintings have been influenced by his work in marble as a sculptural material. “It’s making a hard surface svpn-mag.com

appear smooth and soft,” he says. “The puff jacket is a modern-day version of this plush clothing that marble has projected from Roman-Greco life. It tells a story depending on who you are. I didn’t grow up with a puff jacket because where I lived in Oregon, where the raincoat was an important piece of clothing. Yet, today, everyone uses a down jacket to go hiking, touring, or venturing into the outdoors as well as shopping and anything else we do in our daily existence.” Capable with carpentry, Farrand can fix up anything. In his down time, he fishes up Trail Creek and always wanted to live near the wilderness. He grew up crafting, building, and manufacturing with his father and learned about tools and resources. This knowledge and ability eventually led to his place in south-central Idaho’s Lost River Valley, where he continued his skillful labor projects on his home and in the studio. “I am close enough to Ketchum where we can be part of things but able to be in the mountains and immersed in my studio,” he says. “We also kept our studio and living space in Los Angeles. For us, the pandemic didn’t 140

change much of our schedule because it’s how we work anyway. We have the tools and materials to continue what we do.” Influenced by his new Idaho surroundings, Farrand has sourced the colors and textures found in the environs of the Big Lost River. Then, as a result of the summer of 2020, surrounded by smoke and fire, he recreated the colors as his palette for Warm Up— crimson, smoke, charcoal, burnt oranges, and ochres. Farrand refers to the aluminum pieces he created for the show as “Horizons” because they are minimal and flat. “I think of how a viewer sees the art and how the art can transform while viewing it,” he says. “Standing in front of these pieces is important, especially to be able to see the depth and movement of the paintings.” Farrand and his wife, Ariel, who is also an artist, split their time between a cabin in Mackay, Idaho, and an industrial live/work space in Pomona, California. In 2018, when they presented a two-person exhibition at OCHI Gallery in Ketchum, they first encountered the Big Wood and Lost Rivers and fell in love with them. “We loved it here so much, we came back for a summer residency,” he says. “I grew up hunting and fishing, and since living in Los Angeles, I lost some of my roots. We were looking for a place to buy and found it in Mackay. It is a place where I reconnect with the things I love.” There are elements of humor, romance, loneliness, a critique of societal values, and, without doubt, artistry that make Warm Up a profound exhibition, along with a reverence for the high-desert mountain lifestyle that generated the idea. Warm Up will be open on December 31, 2021, with a New Year’s Eve reception. The show will be on exhibition through February 12, 2022. Kneeland Gallery Robert Moore, Seth Winegar, and Caleb Meyer Renowned plein air painter Robert Moore serves as an inspiration and mentor to many accomplished painters. His technique involves applying a multitude of oil hues onto his canvas and then working a palette knife with both hands until his composition emerges from the apparent chaos of texture and color. The process is all the more extraordinary given the fact that Moore suffers from partial color blindness. A native of Hailey, Idaho, and a former apprentice of Robert Moore, Caleb Meyer has always enjoyed the rugged beauty the Northwest has to offer. A graduate of Boise State University, he continued his education through an apprenticeship with renowned artist Robert Moore. Meyer compares his time in Moore’s studio to the laying of a strong foundation. “The painting process is like building a house. A painter must understand the principles of design to create a strong painting, much like a carpenter must understand the principles of architecture to build a strong house,” says Meyer, an established artist in his own right whose work is featured in public and private collections nationwide. Utah artist Seth Winegar paints unique tonalist landscapes of the West, marked by broad brushstrokes and subtle colors. Having 150

overcome severe health challenges in his youth, he has immersed himself solely in his artwork, and when asked why he paints, he responds, “That’s like asking me why I breathe...it’s instinctual.” 271 1st Avenue North | Ketchum 208.726.5512 kneelandgallery.com

Gilman Contemporary

This December, Gilman Contemporary will exhibit Seizing Beauty, featuring photographer Paulette Tavormina’s carefully crafted tableaux, informed and inspired by 17th-century painting. Often using a rich, dark backdrop and subtle lighting, Tavormina captures the depth and nuance of these paintings in her photographs. Drawing on her personal experience and an understanding of art history, the artist’s hand is present throughout the compositions. Sourcing from farmers’ markets around New York City, Tavormina must shoot within the constraints of the seasons. Her images hold an understanding of time—the flowers, food, and creatures have a finite expiration. Originally taking inspiration from the work of 17th-century masters of still life, such as Giovanna Garzoni Francisco de Zurbarán, Adriaen Coorte, and Maria Sibylla Merian, Tavormina has created work that continues upon the tradition of the still-life as an art form. Each of her photographs is carefully crafted and is the result of careful consideration of light and placement. The directness of Tavormina’s work exposes the connection between humans, nature, and time. She was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2016, and her monograph book, Paulette Tavormina: Seizing Beauty, was published by The Monacelli Press in 2016 and reviewed by The New York Times and Architectural Digest. Tavormina’s photographs have been exhibited in Paris, London, Moscow, Lugano, New York, Palm Beach, Boston, and San Francisco, among other cities. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of the Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame, Art in Embassies, U.S.

Department of State, Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida, Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon, Michigan, and Alimentarium, Musée de l’Alimentation, Vervey, Switzerland. Tavormina also works as a commercial photographer—she has photographed works of art for Sotheby’s, collaborated with The Fabulous Beekman Boys on their three heirloom cookbooks, and photographed The Del Posto Cookbook with chef Mark Ladner, published by Hachette. Also on view, in December, will be a group exhibition that demonstrates the range and scope of mediums of Gilman Contemporary’s artists. 661 Sun Valley Road | Ketchum 208.726.7585 gilmancontemporary.com

Broschofsky Galleries Best of the West Throughout the winter, works by gallery artists include Russell Chatham, Ewoud DeGroot, Billy Schenck, Rudi Broschofsky, Russell Young, Joellyn Duesberry, David Yarrow, and others. Shows will highlight recent acquisitions of paintings by Russell Chatham, who died November 10, 2019. In viewing a Chatham painting, one typically gets a feeling of recognition of place. However, another feeling is revealed, a sense of emotion that goes deeper than the visual mind. Chatham’s last painting, Spring Moon Over Marshall Ridge, and other works on view quietly evoke this emotion. David Yarrow’s large-scale photographic works often evoke curiosity, laughter, and awe. The British artist continued his “road” series that he initiated in 2018. The print “On the Road Again” shows Cindy Crawford and her companion enjoying the freedom of the vastness of the American West. As David says of this piece, “The sense of place is palpable. This is America that so many know and love, with its long roads running to the horizon with either side exuding a sense of calm and solitude. No other country in the world offers road trips ∂as visually rewarding as the USA, and they are integral to the fabric of the American Dream.” 360 East Avenue | Ketchum 208.726.4950 brogallery.com 152

Friesen Gallery Lawrence Fodor Increscent Friesen Gallery opened in 1986, representing the work of Lawrence Fodor. Thirty-five years have transpired, and Fodor remains the only artist presently represented since day one. This important exhibition, Increscent, marks the last exhibition for Friesen Gallery as it has been known, and it is fitting for the work of Lawrence Fodor to be showcased throughout the entire Main Gallery. Fodor’s large-scale mixed media oil paintings are intense, lyrical, and wholly abstract works of art. However, hidden behind the surface of these abstractions is a vast archive of historical masterpieces, meticulously executed homages to icons including Peter Paul Rubens, Jean Etienne Ramey, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo Da Vinci, Théodore Géricault, JMW Turner, the Laocöon, and ancient Greco-Roman sculpture. Old World masters haunt and vibrate through Fodor’s richly layered surfaces. The definition of Increscent; becoming gradually greater. “These paintings are about gathering, accumulating, and integrating diverse visual elements to fuel expansive growth and infinite possibility,” Fodor says. “Increscent is cumulative, deepening, waxing—the act of becoming full. The paintings are a celebration of both drawing from the past and working in the moment.” While Fodor is nationally recognized, the considerable following in this community for his work is extraordinary. The body of work comprising Increscent is oil/mixed media paintings on canvas, oil/ mixed media paintings on wood, and mixed media works on paper. A multifaceted exhibition—and occasion—not to be missed. December 31, 2021 – February 12, 2022

OCHI is pleased to present Warm Up, Devin Farrand’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, on view in Ketchum, Idaho. Warm Up features large aluminum horizons, a suite of new paintings, and marble works depicting close-ups of down jackets. Utilitarian in nature and instantly recognizable, these coats are marketed as hi-tech, fashionable outerwear and consist of goose down and polyester layers held in place by parallel seams that create the eponymous puff. Farrand’s paintings frame details of coat construction with puff rows providing dozens of pillowy folds in the fabric, each rendered with care. Farrand creates closely cropped compositions absent of sleeves, zippers, or bodily form, transforming a pervasive cultural object into abstraction. Soft light falls on 154

the crests of creases in contrast with painted threads found in the shadow of a seam—there is romance in Farrand’s observations. Farrand takes functionality out of context in order to better understand the language and meaning of materials and surface. His ongoing analyses of material aesthetics produce nuanced meditations on perception, at times fetishistic in nature or sublimely minimal. Farrand can even find a way to reveal humor or solace in raw material. Born into a family of highly skilled craftsmen, builders, and manufacturers, Farrand has rebuilt cars, built musical instruments, driven combines, assembled boats, problem-solved, and tinkered—a methodology of learning by doing.

Farrand’s puff paintings have emerged from his interest in marble as a sculptural material, natural resource, and signifier of permanence and societal authority. In the gridded landscape of the quarry created over thousands of years of marble extraction, Farrand found visual resonance with the seams of a downed jacket. The wrinkles in a painting of a puff jacket conjure the fleshy muscles of Greco-Roman gods draped in robes all exquisitely chiseled from a single block of marble—in fact, Farrand often sources marble from the Carrara quarry that birthed such masterpieces from centuries ago. The painted puffs reference the shifting colors of Farrand’s ominous Horizon works, with their reflective surfaces of aluminum chromate, but they also evoke the colors and textures found in the landscape of his painting studio on the Big Lost River in Idaho. Ferrand worked on-site during the summer of 2020 surrounded by smoke and fire, and there is a tenderness to his color selection—crimson, smoke, charcoal, hazy jewel tones—reflections of the man-made climate crisis creeping ever closer. The carved and painted puffs recontextualize an artificial material created within a manufacturing context into a larger and timely discourse. Farrand’s observations and technical abilities—form and content—provide great insight into individual perception and societal values. An Artist’s Reception will take place on New Year’s Eve, Friday, December 31.

GROUP SHOWS

December/January Color as Metaphor This group exhibit examines artists working in both abstract and non-representational forms whose work employs color in myriad ways: to add narrative, provide symbolic meaning, and elicit visceral or emotional sensations for the viewer. Julie Speidel’s hand-rubbed prints contain richly saturated, amorphous shapes, with one stacked above the other. Mixed media artist Cole Morgan similarly defies gravity with forms that seem to float across the work’s surface to tease the viewer through trompe l’oeil techniques. Pegan Brooke’s oil paintings capture the sensation of light on water, taking the viewer on a visual journey through the many tints and shades of a single hue. As the viewer moves around her paintings, the surfaces appear to move as the light shifts and bends. Known for his large canvases and bold, colorful style, Gary Komarin is a master of post-painterly abstraction. Marcia Myers’ fresco surfaces bring forth ancient surfaces and ancient times. We are excited to feature new ceramics by both Bean Finneran and Mark Cooper, two artists who push the limits of traditional sculpture and play with colorful glazes.

now showing Honoring our Landscape Exploring the artistic interpretation of our lands by nationally renowned painters and photographers, this exhibition includes work by Victoria Adams, whose carefully rendered oils recall the majesty and unadulterated landscapes of long ago as seen in the paintings of the Hudson River School. Sumptuously rich in color, James Cook’s thickly painted oils are a monumental and expressive interpretation of our landscapes. The exhibition also includes work by Michael Gregory, whose iconic paintings with barns and homesteads as subject matter reflect on our migration westward and the beauty and isolation found in the Western American Landscape. Nationally renowned artist Theodore Waddell’s sophisticated modernist paintings depict abstracted cattle and horses dotted against landscapes of thick paint and recall his time as a former cattle rancher in Montana. Nationally recognized and beloved local Plein-air painters Sheila Gardner and Divit Cardoza create watercolor paintings that are both vibrant and energetic interpretations of our Wood River Valley and beyond. Flora and Fauna Celebrating the changing seasons and the beauty found in nature’s vibrant palette. This exhibition features both large paintings and sculpture as well as and smaller intimate works on panel. Inspired by native botanicals, Kathy Moss’s

paintings explore the suggestiveness and symbolic meaning of flowers. Ceramicist Margaret Keelan whimsically portrays the childlike sense of wonder in our relationship to nature and intimate companionship with the many creatures found there. Rooted in the tradition of 19th-century American Romanticism, Robert McCauley’s narratives are both timely and relevant and address a variety of contemporary themes and issues, including cultures in collision, environmental ethics, and humankind’s impact. Highlighting the art of glassblowing and stone carving, Jane Rosen breathes life into each sculpture she creates, carefully balancing the contrasts of color and texture intrinsic to the material’s nature of glass and stone. Derived from daily observations, Rosen’s sculptures are elegant and statuesque interpretations of the birds of prey that roost by her ranch and studio. We also proudly celebrate the accomplishments of internationally recognized painter Hung Liu, whose major large-scale retrospective, Portraits of Promised Lands is currently on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., August 27, 2021-May 30, 2022. 400 1st Avenue North | Ketchum 208.726.5079 gailseverngallery.com

Sun Valley Museum of Art

Rebecca Campbell, Two Year Supply (Clean), 2016, Windex, tin-plated steel, glass, wood, digital projection, collection of Brigham Young University Museum of Art.

Two Year Supply Through January 7, 2022

Two Year Supply features artwork by three artists with ties to the agricultural communities of southern Idaho: painter and sculptor Rebecca Campbell and photographers Steve Davis and Alexis Pike. Each of the artists contributes work examining the history of settlement by farming families in the region, the communities that those families have built, and how life in Idaho’s rural towns and cities is changing in the 21st century. Drawn west by advertising following the Carey Act of 1894, which saw the transfer of millions of acres of federal land to western states on the condition that states would oversee irrigation projects, pioneers settled in southern Idaho on the promise of cheap, irrigated land. The exhibition takes its title from a series of sculptures Rebecca Campbell has created that reflect on the Mormon tradition of canning and jarring extensive food supplies in preparation for emergencies. It celebrates the resilience of those who have farmed the high-desert landscapes of southern Idaho for generations. Advertisements meant to lure settlers to the region depicted arid southern Idaho as a place of rich and fertile land, of “perfect irrigation, never-failing crops.” Despite the fact 158

svpn-mag.com

that those who came west to farm in southern Idaho found circumstances much different than those they were promised, many managed to overcome harsh conditions, establishing successful farms, some of which still exist today. The exhibition also acknowledges that the history of the Carey Act and subsequent settlement is not uncomplicated. The Carey Act ignored the fact that Native American people had already inhabited this land for centuries. And during World War II, many farms in the region relied on labor provided by Japanese-American internees at Minidoka Internment Camp— labor documented in FSA photographs in the exhibition. Three contemporary artists and a set of historical photographs invite visitors to engage with a part of Idaho that differs from the Wood River Valley in terms of landscape, culture, economy, and history but drives a significant portion of the state’s economy and its “Famous Potatoes” reputation beyond the state’s borders. The exhibition features paintings and sculptures from Rebecca Campbell’s project The Potato Eaters. Taking inspiration from the famous Vincent Van Gogh painting of the same name, the project mines Campbell’s family history in and around Rupert,

now showing Idaho, where both her parents grew up on potato farms, and many of her relatives continue to live and work. Investigating memory, nostalgia, and imagination, Campbell’s paintings and sculptures depict members of her family and the landscapes and small towns of the region in the mid-20th century, at a time when small family farms dominated the region’s landscapes and economy. Campbell’s works consider land, labor and community, and the relationship between the three. Like Campbell, photographer Alexis Pike draws on her family history in We Sagebrush Folks, which takes its title from a book by Annie Pike Greenwood, a writer, teacher, and farmer who lived in south-central Idaho’s Magic Valley from 1913 to 1928. Greenwood’s book gave an honest account of the joys and hardships of farming in the area, where there was rarely enough water, even with irrigation. Pike has captured the spirit of Greenwood’s book in her contemporary photographs of life on the farms and in the towns of southern Idaho, pairing her images with passages from We Sagebrush Folk and with reproductions of the posters and propaganda used to lure potential farmers west to settle after the Carey Act. Photographer Steve Davis spent part of his youth living outside the town of American Falls, Idaho, in the southeastern part of the state. Davis made the photographs in his project As American Falls decades after he left the town, which lies along the Snake River and was a place surrounded by small, family-owned farms in his youth. The photographs document how life has changed in the years since he moved away, depicting a place where international conglomerates now own most of the agricultural land and big box stores have displaced small businesses. His photographs illustrate the effects of these economic shifts and how some aspects of community life continue relatively unchanged in this particular American town.

The exhibition also includes a slideshow of photographs made by Farm Services Administration photographer Russell Lee in July 1942 of Japanese American internees at Minidoka who provided labor to farms throughout southern Idaho as the men who owned the farms went off to war. Lee’s photographs, many idealized in their depiction of confiscated labor and life in the Minidoka camp, are complicated in their representation of this little-known chapter in Idaho’s agricultural history. 191 5th Street East | Ketchum 208.726.9491 svmoa.org

“Birds are the first things we see, you know, when we wake up. See and hear. Birds are like roosters to us; they wake us up in the mornings. And when the sun goes down, they go to sleep, and we go to sleep. You know us old people start and finish the day with the birds. That’s everyday life between birds and humans, you know. That’s what I think about anyway.” —Nyangulya Katie Nalgood 640 North Main Street | Ketchum (by appointment) 208.309.8676 harveyartprojects.com

THE ZENERGY EXPERIENCE: 20 YEARS OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS

By Sabina Dana Plasse

For 20 years, Zenergy Health Club & Spa has provided the Wood River Valley with a stunning and state-of-the-art facility unlike any other in the country. It is committed to making health and wellness a part of the daily routine for its members and guests and to act as a pillar for the community overall. In honor of Zenergy’s two-decades-long continuous effort to bring the best to those who seek it, Zenergy called upon a few men and women, ranging from Olympians to professional athletes to sports gurus and caregivers of all ages, to share their thoughts about Zenergy. It’s not just about the athletes at Zenergy. Through establishing relationships in the community for 20 years, Zenergy has created a bond with individuals and organizations, events, festivals, and community services. As a club, Zenergy offers the cutting edge of fitness, with a cardio and weight training facility that is constantly evolving. Its luxury day spa has treatment rooms and a salon that encourage its nonmember spa users to experience the club’s myriad of amenities with a full day pass. Zenergy Sports Rehab Clinic features some of the best physical therapists that can be found anywhere in the nation. Zenergy’s indoor and outdoor saline pools and oversized outdoor jacuzzi are truly exceptional. Classes are numerous for all, with yoga, Pilates, group fitness, a full cycling spin studio, and premier indoor tennis courts. The Himalayan salt saunas, eucalyptus steam baths, and modern locker facilities make Zenergy a 360° experience, not merely a gym. The focus on 166

excellence in health and well-being is about more than fitness. It is a lifestyle and mindset that is uniquely Zenergy. Zenergy’s athlete ambassadors span generations, from Charley French, a 95-year-old triathlon champion, to Ryder Sarchett, who, at 18 years old has made the US Ski Team. Sports fuel the business of a ski town, and Sun Valley has the champions and distinction to foster the best in the world. Zenergy is part of the climb to the podium, recognizing the potential in new sports, and breaking records. No matter the sport, level, or ability, Zenergy takes pride in the small part they play to aid athletes in reaching their goals.

THE SKIERS

KARL FOSTVEDT Photo by Tal Roberts

Big mountain freeride skier Karl Fostvedt is one of Zenergy’s newest sponsored athletes. One of his claims to fame is winning the King of Corbet’s at Jackson Hole Ski Resort two out of the four last years that it has occurred. “Crazy” Karl was born in the old Moritz Hospital in Sun Valley and attended Wood River High School. A mogul skier with the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF), Fostvedt switched to freeriding. He’s been in numerous ski films, supported by many companies for his skiing abilities, and he recently created his own ski film company. “I am officially a Zenergy athlete, which is very exciting. I am a lucky guy, and at 31 years old, I’m just so grateful and appreciative to be on the athlete team at Zenergy, so I can take care of my body to keep charging hard. My father is a member and used to bring me here when I was little, and it is so nice to be here now.” svpn-mag.com

REGGIE, ZACH, BANKS, NICOLE & RYDER Photo by Daniel Leeds

Zach and Reggie Crist, known more commonly as the Crist Brothers, are lifelong Sun Valley residents. As they raise a new generation of skiers, they continue to work in the ski industry as stewards of the sport. Zenergy has always been a foundational piece of their training and recovery. World Cup downhill skier Reggie Crist competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics. After ten years as a member of the US Ski Team, Reggie helped pioneer the sport of Ski Cross, which is now an Olympic sport. He became the first Ski Cross athlete to win the X Games twice and stood on the podium five times. Zach Crist, a World Cup downhill skier, also became involved with Ski Cross with his brother Reggie, competing in the X Games where he and his brother were 1st and 2nd on the podium in 2005 (Reggie 1st, Zach 2nd). With a love for backcountry skiing, he now owns Sun Valley Guides. Whether surfing, mountain biking, kayaking, or skiing, the Crist brothers’ dedication to fitness is part of their love for their Sun Valley lives. As they pave the way for younger athletes, both Crist brothers have, consciously and subconsciously, inspired local skiers of newer generations. For Banks Gilberti, “Zenergy has made an incredible impact on not just my career, but in my everyday life. The variety of tools it offers at my fingertips allows me to develop a dynamic and more engaging way to strength train and take care of my body. The environment the club has created is what any athlete dreams of having access to, and they have always shown their willingness to help local athletes in our community achieve their biggest goals and ambitions.”

Gilberti, like so many, uses Zenergy’s facilities all year round, whether it’s the stationary bikes and low-impact equipment or the hot tub and sauna sessions to maximize his physical recovery. Gilberti also extensively uses the club’s Pivot Studio, an adjacent fitness studio that has been outfitted with tools to maximize functional fitness training, for weightlifting and strength training, because alpine skiing requires the ultimate in-body balance. For Nicole Jorgenson of the Sun Valley Ski Patrol, a good workout is necessary for her daily routine. “Not only do I crave the feeling of pushing my body and getting stronger when I challenge and stimulate my body, but I also find that I can focus better, relax better, and am more clear-minded,” she says. Jorgenson’s job, sport, and lifestyle all blend together. Fitness, recovery, and taking care of her body are essential facets of her life, so Zenergy provides a facility where she can achieve everything in one place. Jorgenson recently completed a fourday backcountry trek in March of 2021, where she and a group of five incredible female athletes set out to film an action-short film, Girl Crush. Zenergy played a role as one of the film’s local sponsors and coordinated a sold-out premiere of the film with SheJumps at the Limelight Hotel Ketchum. Ryder Sarchett is a member of the US Ski Team and Zenergy’s youngest sponsored athlete with SVSEF. Sarchett comes from a family of alpine ski racers in the Wood River Valley. He has enjoyed a great deal of success, and he is one to watch. After an ACL injury in 2019, Sarchett made great use of the multitude of resources at Zenergy. He worked with Zenergy’s highly esteemed physical therapist, Kyle Sela, in the Sports Rehab Clinic and participated in various hot yoga and Pilates classes to help aid in his recovery.

I can sit in the spa and go stretch without distraction. It’s been amazing for my swimming and time at the club.”

ADVENTURE ATHLETES GAVIN McCLURG & GERRY MOFFATT Photo by Daniel Leeds

Sun Valley is a paradise for the adventurous spirit. Its highaltitude and extensive backcountry allow mountain peak training, raging river running, technical climbing, and mountaineering. Gavin McClurg, a paragliding pilot, adventurer, and offshore sailor, pioneered a route over the Alaska Range and completed several expeditions over remote areas across North America. As a sailor, he circumnavigated the earth twice. But, for him, this is just another day at the office. “My profession as a professional athlete requires nearconstant physical training,” says McClurg. “I have used Zenergy’s incredible facilities to prepare for four editions of the ‘Red Bull X-Alps,’ considered the hardest adventure race on earth, which has been seven years of very intense training. Zenergy turns what would often be a brutal day into something I look forward to every time. It is not just the world-class club that has everything I need and more, including the Pivot Studio, but it is the steam and sauna for recovery, the ice-cold showers, luxury locker room, and great cafe with healthy recovery drinks. It’s a one-stopshop for mind and body that helps me stay durable, strong, and resilient.” Gerry Moffatt, a native of Scotland, is an internationally acclaimed expedition kayaker and has spent 35 years guiding in the Himalayas and worldwide. National Geographic considers Gerry the “most experienced river guide in the Himalayas.” Moffatt’s Zen Masters Program, sponsored by Zenergy, offers adults a multi-week outdoor experiential education program to learn skills, empower self-confidence, and discover personal tools to support a lifelong practice of self-discovery, learning, and fulfillment. safety training. The program also introduces students to readings, guided meditations, workshops, and conversations to ignite the equally important “inner” journey of embracing “Beginner’s Mind.” “We need to work on the spiritual fitness and to hold up an authentic sense of adventure and go beyond the physical,” says Moffatt, who has been part of Zenergy since its opening. “Zen Masters also moves away from the commoditization of adventure, money for service. The idea is to hold up a mirror to themselves with some guidance. It is a relationship with nature. It is a spiritual journey. Zenergy supplies all of us with the capacity to train and get strong to allow us to go out in the field. For Zen Masters, Zenergy is the starting point.” Zenergy aims to provide a full-service experience for all of its athletes and patrons. This means not only physical health, but mental as well. Working with athletes such as Gerry expands that messaging and reinforces Zenergy’s famous tagline of “exercise mindfulness.”

DARA TORRES Photo by Daniel Leeds

Olympic swimmer Dara Torres has been training at Zenergy for many years and even brought her teammates to train. “Zenergy is one of the best sports clubs I’ve ever been to, and I have been to many! It has some of the best exercise equipment, and the variety is amazing. My teammates still talk about our training camp there because it was such a memorable experience,” she says. “The views at the pool and the club are something I enjoy, and now it is generational for both my mother and my daughter. We all work out at Zenergy. Throughout my athletic career and what I’ve learned about hard work, sacrifice, time management, and dedication have always played a role in my lifestyle because it’s amazing learning these qualities and applying them to your everyday life.” For Torres, getting a good workout is not just about how she does during her training, “it is about enjoying where you are, the environment, and feeling like you worked your body out, if I have that experience every day, then I am great! I am amazed every time I come back to town and see the upgrades or additional machines Zenergy has added to their facility. I enjoy trying their state-of-the-art equipment and trying to

OLYMPIANS AND WORLD-CLASS ATHLETES challenge myself when I’ve never used the new machines. It is so Zen, and no other clubs are like that.” Torres enjoys warming up her body in the club before jumping into the outdoor pool. “You can’t just hop into a workout, you have to prepare, and Zenergy allows you to do that,” she says. “The great thing about Zenergy is that it is never the same club. I have trained at some of the top facilities in the world, and it is always evolving.” The Wood River High School swim team practices at Zenergy, and there are strong ties to the Atkinson Park Swim program since the club opened. On occasion, Torres will lead the Masters Swim program, which is open to club members. svpn-mag.com

Also, since I am prone to having joint replacements, four of them, the rehab opportunities and physical therapists at Zenergy are top-notch and have helped me come back fully from every surgery. On a side note, I love seeing the professionalism of the staff and trainers at Zenergy. They are pros and care about their clients and the facilities.” For Muffy, a good workout is the key to her day. “Currently, I am training for several Nordic ski marathons in central 174

I’m generally an ‘in and out’ kind of person, so I like to get the strength workout done efficiently at Zenergy and not linger. Occasionally though, you will find me in the pool, attempting to swim laps, but usually, I end up in the hot tub.” Muffy has been coaching Nordic skiing for 40 years. “I moved here to coach the SVSEF Junior Nordic Competition team with Rick Kapala back in 1990. I knew it was a mecca for great Nordic skiing, outdoor activities, wilderness adventures, wide-open spaces, and like-minded athletes who love to recreate and push themselves athletically. Charley French is living proof of how fitness and wellness can help you live a long life. At 95 years old, he will be honored at the 2022 Boulder Mountain Tour (BMT), which will name the 15K Half Boulder the Charley Course. Born in St. Louis in the 1920s, Charley fought in World War II, is an accomplished triathlete, and has competed all but four years in the BMT. He is an inspiration to us all, and his commitment to his body and wellness is unlike anything we know. And he is one of the finest and most polite people pumping iron in the gym—a world-class human. Charley set a record at the Ironman triathlon in Hawaii and is a five-time world champion in a sport he took up in his 60s.

As he says, “When I was a young competitor, almost no one did weight training. Then, when I got into my 60s, I read more about the importance of weight training as you get older. So, I started weight training for the first time in my life, and now 30 years later, I am still weight training at Zenergy! I usually work out two to three days a week in the weight room. My workouts are geared towards the sports I am participating in, but I also swim laps two to three days a week. I am a sports-oriented person. So, I can find many friends with similar interests. Also, having the mountains and the seasons, it is a perfect place to play.”

SUN VALLEY SKI EDUCATION FOUNDATION GOLD TEAM COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIP SUN VALLEY SUNS Photo by Daniel Leeds

JOHN HAGENBUCH Photo by Nils Ribi

John Hagenbuch, a man on a mission and a Sun Valley native, continues to capture winning moments as he strives to be one of the top Nordic skiers in the world with his sights on the US Olympic team later this year. An SVSEF Gold Team member, the same program that Muffy Ritz came to be a part of back in 1990, Hagenbuch is a two-time gold-medal-winning member of the Junior Men’s World Championships relay team. “The facility is phenomenal, and Zenergy has graciously supported our Gold Team as a jacket sponsor and in our training for a long time,” says SVSEF Executive Director Scott McGrew. “They have been a sponsor for SVSEF from day one. It is an incredible partnership. However, what’s more exciting and more impactful is that Zenergy is investing in a healthy lifestyle for this community, an elevated approach. Zenergy supports our work and others and celebrates this relationship with physical activity and healthy living. It’s a virtuous aspect of our community—this does not happen by accident. It takes time, money, and work. It takes an organization like Zenergy to make these kinds of investments and support kids and the community way beyond its membership—it’s much bigger.” 178

svpn-mag.com

When it comes to community, the 47-year history of the Sun Valley Suns has been in existence longer than 19 NHL franchises. “We are the Wood River Valley’s team because the entire Valley attends games. It is the community’s team,” says John “Cub” Burke, who has been the longtime Suns head coach and an original team member from when the club started. “There is a tremendous amount of tradition and legacy with the Suns, and it has taken the whole community to make it succeed, including the support of Zenergy, which has been a big corporate sponsor for us. Its name is on all three sets of our jerseys. They support us and our program. They are always there for us.” Zenergy supports the Suns and sponsors players Joey Sides and Cody Lampl, who grew up in the valley, and have had solid professional careers. Zenergy also supports the Suns youth hockey program. Along with starting the league in other mountain towns, the Suns also get to play with Bobby Farrelly of the Farrelly Brothers filmmaking duo, bringing in NHL players. “Over the years, he has brought many teams, who continue to come to play in Sun Valley,” says Burke. “These players have been coming for many years.” The Suns’ Mike Curry says, “Zenergy has always been a big supporter of the Sun Valley Suns. Its top-notch facilities allow us to stay sharp on the ice, but it is also one of the fantastic local businesses that sponsor our team

and allow us to continue to have hockey seasons year after year.” He adds, “The physical benefits of going to Zenergy are apparent. The better shape I am in, the more enjoyable physical activities are. The psychological benefit is something I’ve noticed more and more as I have gotten older. Even a quick 20-minute workout goes a long way in relieving stress and improving my mood.” For Sun Valley Suns Justin Taylor, “I like the options at Zenergy. I use everything including the hot tub, and I occasionally enjoy attending a yoga class. Some days I like to just come for an ‘executive’ and have a stretch and a soak and a sauna to reset.” He adds, “Playing hockey for the Suns here is a special thing. Every Suns player, present and past, will tell you that being a part of the Sun Valley Suns is a highlight of their life. The way we are supported by this community and truly what it has to offer is a big reason why we continue to play.” Zenergy’s community support does shape how the Wood River Valley operates on many levels.

“Zenergy has always recognized its unique platform to help support local athletes, teams, and organizations. Whether it’s opening our pool for the Wood River High School team and Atkinson Park, donating spa services for a local team raffle, sponsoring a local race, or providing a membership for a nonprofit’s silent auction, we have so many ways to support our incredible community. It’s more than just athletes and teams,” says Zenergy’s General Manager of 14 years, Derek Agnew. Zenergy’s generosity and ability to help the community are about more than just dollars. It supports Higher Ground, Camp Rainbow Gold, and donates to the SVSEF Wild Game Dinner every year, in addition to unique projects such as Nicole Jorgenson’s Girl Crush film. “All of the events I have done with Zenergy have directly benefited the Sawtooth Avalanche Center, which is an awesome organization that helps protect everyone who loves our backcountry,” says Gavin McClurg. “As an avid backcountry skier, I’m deeply grateful to Zenergy for organizing these events and so generously supporting our community.” svpn-mag.com

IS YOUR NEW

YEAR’S RESOLUTION

TO GO ON A DIET? St. Luke’s offers SVPN Magazine readers insight on a new year, new you diet. By Mariah Stout, RD Clinical Dietitian at St. Luke’s Health System

According to a 2020 survey of Google searches in six countries, including the United States, there seems to be a yearly spike in interest in dieting in January, coinciding with the New Year’s holiday1. This January, many residents of the Wood River Valley will likely make a New Year’s resolution, and many of these resolutions will be to make dietary changes in hopes of losing weight. As a registered dietitian at St. Luke’s, I fully support individuals wanting to make healthy behavior changes. But, unfortunately, research has shown that weight-loss diets are unlikely to result in lasting changes and can have adverse side effects. You may have heard the phrase “diets don’t work” from social media, a friend, or a medical professional, but what does that mean? If not a diet, what should you do instead? A recent study published in the British Journal of Medicine looked at 14 popular weight-loss diets and their effects on health measures and weight after six months and one year. The researchers saw that while most of the diets resulted in modest weight loss and improvements in cardiovascular risk factors (such as blood pressure) after six months, these effects seemed to disappear after one year2. There are thought to be several reasons why weight-loss diets often don’t provide sustainable health improvements.

1 2 3 4 5 6

182

However, it may be a surprise to some dieters that their willpower is usually not to blame. To lose weight, our bodies need to use more energy (or calories) than we take in from our food and beverages. However, our bodies respond to caloric restriction (aka going on a diet) by lowering our metabolism, or the rate that our body uses calories on a day-to-day basis3. It is thought that our bodies may do this because humans have evolved to survive during times of food scarcity. Because of this, our body makes every attempt to maintain its weight and life-sustaining functions at the lower energy level provided by the diet. This is a natural process that may diminish weight-loss efforts. Another thing that is thought to happen when we restrict overall calories or certain types of food is a pattern of behavior called The Binge Restrict Cycle. As the name suggests, when we restrict (or go on a diet), this may put us at risk for a binge or the feeling of being out of control around food4. This can worsen our relationship with food and can lead to disordered eating or the development of an eating disorder. Dieting is thought to be a risk factor for the development of certain eating disorders*5,6. So, if diets don’t work, what else can you do if you’re hoping to make dietary or lifestyle changes to improve your health or well-being in this new year? An alternative to weight-focused

It promotes eating for well-being, life-enhancing movement or physical activity, and respect for the diversity of body shapes and sizes7. Health at Every Size does not claim that every individual is healthy at any size, but it does encourage individuals to engage in healthy behaviors if they choose and promotes size acceptance regardless of body size. Say you feel like you don’t know how to “eat for well-being,” or your relationship with food has been negatively affected by a history of dieting or disordered eating. Intuitive Eating, a concept coined by dietitians Evelyn Tribole MS, RDN, CEDRD-S, and Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S, FAND, is a self-care eating framework that helps us to reconnect with our instinct, emotion, and rational thought to feed ourselves in a way that is right for our health and well-being8. Intuitive Eating acknowledges that weight-loss diets are not sustainable. It is a practice that supports individuals to re-learn how to take care of themselves in the realms of eating and movement sustainably and flexibly throughout life.

If you are concerned that you or a loved one are experiencing an eating disorder, please reach out to your medical team or call the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) helpline at 800.931.2237.

Want to learn more about HAES or Intuitive Eating? There are fabulous books written on both approaches (listed below). You may also consider working with a registered dietitian to see how these approaches work with your unique circumstances and health. Please reach out to your doctor to receive a referral to meet with one of our St. Luke’s dietitians. RESOURCES:

CENTER’S APPROACH TO HOLIDAY WELLNESS Dr. Molly Brown offers healthy living practices for the holiday season By Dr. Molly Brown, PhD, D.N.M..

The joy in radiant health keeps us positive, high-energy, and efficient in our lives. Our health is a state of well-being that includes physical, emotional, and spiritual elements, which are intimately intertwined. Feeling our best allows us to achieve our goals, live in a state of creativity and inspiration, and enjoy our best lives. Obviously, in current times and with the state of our world and community, it is more important than ever to take charge of feeling your best, eating your best, being your best, and going into the holiday season and 2022 with focus and intention. Below are our suggestions of healthy habits, practices, and prevention for the new year.

What We Eat

Cleanse Seasonally

Toxins that accumulate in our systems from GMO and food exposed to pesticides, including non-organic alcohol, meats, and processed foods, jam up our detox organs and lead to a sluggish metabolism, inflammation, and brain fog. The liver is our primary detox organ and controls over 500 daily functions in our body, including inflammatory processes, hormone balance, daily detoxification, skin health, fat metabolism, and more. Therefore, it is essential to eat clean food that is organically grown and nourish your organs properly.

Supplements

There is no substitute for healthy eating. However, organic food should be a bare minimum. Seek restaurants that prepare foods made with organic ingredients. The food is more nutritious and tastes better, and consuming organic foods heals both your body and the earth through organic farming practices.

Supplement your daily intake with superfoods such as maca, coconut products, hemp seeds, and other nutritious foods that pack in high amounts of nutrition with each nutrientdense bite. You will eat less, feel more satisfied, reach optimal weight and energy, and feel fabulous from the food you eat, rather than sick, bloated, and lethargic. Of course, there is no substitute for a healthy, high-energy, highly mineralized, hydrating intake of foods and drinks.

Seasonal cleanses are a part of GLOW from the beginning. It is so important to cleanse twice a year to keep your system fluid, clean, clear, and allow your body to breathe even at a cellular and glandular level. Cleansing in a five-to seven-day cycle gives the gift of high energy for months to follow. It restores the natural order and intelligence of the body, which begins to function optimally, clearing inflammation daily, leading to increased mental clarity, inspiration, and awareness. We offer plant-based, organic cleanses several times per year. Our most consistent feedback is higher energy, deeper sleep, brighter skin, and mental clarity. At the end of our cleanses, people want to experience this state of well-being all the time.

Many supplements are unnecessary and may not be bioavailable to the body. But high-quality supplements, with the foundation of healthful eating, can facilitate positive health. We love the PH Balancer. We love adaptogens and adaptogenic herbs such as Tao in a Bottle, or Premier Research Labs, Adaptogen for adrenal support. For bone and joint health, we love PH Balancer, D3-K2, and Osteoven. For muscular recovery and athletic performance, our top pick is Perfect Amino, taken specifically around workouts. And, of course, for all inflammatory processes, we use systemic and digestive enzymes. PHOTO BY CECE STORM

Routines

Morning and evening routines are the key to structuring the day for success. Some of my favorite ways to start the day are the following: Warm Water. Wake up and drink 16 ouces of warm water on an empty stomach (facilitates digestion, radiant skin, and hydration). Morning Meditation. For anyone who thinks they don’t have time to meditate, it’s actually the opposite. It structures and orders the start of your day and GIVES you more time in your day. I don’t go a day without it. Yoga. Yoga links the body with the breath and activates the chakras and meridian systems, moves the lymph, and energizes the organs and glands. Bath Soaks. I love the PURSOMA line of bath soaks. The base of these soaks is a French grey sea salt from Bretagne, harvested in small private batches and soaked in pure essential oils and herbs. They are like swimming in the ocean, and I make a ritual of them several times per week. My favorites are “Moonlit” with pink lotus petal and jasmine and “Unplug” with lemon balm. Our bodies are designed to feel amazing. When we care enough to love ourselves, we seek health for ourselves and, more importantly, our children, and we look to reclaim our health and health freedom. The healing of selves and our environment is essential. If there was ever a time to focus on health, it’s now. Our bodies naturally fight off viruses with an optimally functioning immune system and are designed to do so with natural immunity. The gift to live freely, with clear, clean minds and healthy, vibrant bodies and to live with health and happiness is limitless. glowlivefood.com centerhealthsv.com

PIONEER SALOON Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this Valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and

mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Executive Chef Laurent Loubot, who hails from Chalon-sur-Saone (Burgundy), presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal

will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
