EDITOR’S WELCOME
SPRING ON THE MIND
The arrival of spring is a change of season that signals summer is on the way. I adore the change in seasons, especially the shoulder ones like spring, with some days a slush hike in the sun, others a chance at a powder morning, or days of overcast skies where I hunker down and get things done. Well, I try anyway. It’s never the same, and that keeps us going or, at the very least, always ready for something new.
Wrapping up the winter season, Sun Valley welcomes back the Toyota U.S. Alpine Championships presented by Stifel March 20-24. In honor of the elite and next-generation ski racers seeking a spot on the U.S. National Team, David Butterfield offers a history of alpine racing in Sun Valley that will get you excited for those who came before as well as for those to do their best in racing today.
On the cover, Countdown by Matt Duffin, currently on exhibition at Gilman Contemporary, is also featured in an article by Beth Rusch. Duffin’s show Retrospective represents highly detailed work that allows for great joy with the familiar subjects he chooses. SVPN Magazine also presents resident, established, and accomplished artist Judith Kindler as we celebrate fine art around town in article by Raine Kidder. Her most recent Gail Severn Gallery exhibition, based on a trip to Venice, is engaging, offering many stories woven into each piece.
SVPN connected with the Sun Valley Policy Forum and its upcoming speaker, Jonathon Turley, a constitutional legal scholar whose articles appear in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He also appears regularly as a legal expert on major television networks. Turley’s insight is fascinating, and he will be at The Argyros to share his thoughts.
And Martha Williams writes about the Ketchum Remote Collective, where entrepreneurs meet to work on their businesess but living in Sun Valley.
Also in this edition of SVPN Magazine, Aurora Wilkinson presents coverage of the documentary film The Last Ecstatic Days, a unique story and perspective on a young man with brain cancer. A presentation by Sun Valley Wellness, the film will screen at the Sun Valley Opera House with filmmaker Scott Kirschenbaum in attendance.
SVPN ’s Wellness section features energy medicine with Erica Linson and Dr. Molly Brown, who expound on injury and recovery methods. Rounding out Wellness, St. Luke’s offers one of the best deals for peace of mind in the Valley with the fantastic folks and abilities of Air St. Luke’s in our remote region.
In Stanley, Lori Williams takes some time with the Clegg family and shows how Redfish Lake has evolved with tradition and family at its core, thanks to their dedication. As a cherished summer ritual, the opening of Redfish Lake Lodge at the end of May is most anticipated as we wait for the spring melt to disappear.
In our Architecture Style section, MLD, previously Mountain Land Design, shares its new branding and newly opened showroom in Ketchum. Complementing MLD, this issue’s Style Dial has several suggestions for beautifying a home with rugs, chandeliers, and bedroom accents.
In this issue, enjoy our Sun Valley Restaurant Association Dining Guide for fine dining and pages of the Valley’s most sought-after real estate interests. Make the best of spring, and we will see you in June when an inspiring summer is set to unfold.
Happy spring,

PARTY ANIMAL VODKA LAUNCHES THE PARTY HAUS
Idaho potato vodka has a home of its own
38 svpn-mag.com
When entrepreneurs Kate Cullen and Josh hanson created Party Animal Vodka in 2017, the idea was to offer a quality-crafted vodka from Russet potatoes grown in the great state of Idaho. An award-winning vodka, Party Animal is an outstanding product with a philanthropic mission to give back to animal foundations locally and globally and to many other humanitarian-based organizations. It’s made in small batches, and Party Animal’s fun-loving style and brand purpose have never wavered.
In 2024, Kate and Josh are parents to two young children, having logged a quarter million miles around the West their efforts to make Party Animal Vodka the go-to product in the Wood River Valley and beyond. Their sense of community that encompasses the brand continues to grow with new products and a new home in Hailey, Idaho—the Party Haus.
Offering Party Animal Vodka cocktails, beer, and wine, the Party Haus is open to the public for events and gatherings with the ability to host 70 people standing and a sitting capacity of 30, with the addition of an outdoor space to be explored in the coming months.
“Other than running a vodka business with two kids, we are producing our product in our facility along with having a cocktail taproom and event space,” says Kate. “We are planning on Sunday brunch and Bloody Mary Bar, which will feature Party Animal cocktails on site for the public to try in a local, affordable, family-friendly environment.”
Partnering with chefs and inviting food trucks is part of the Sunday brunch plan, as the Party Haus includes an operable commercial kitchen and the ability to serve wine, beer, and
new Party Animal Vodka cocktails. The Party Haus will also offer non-alcoholic beverages.
“The Party Haus will be open to any events looking for a space in downtown Hailey,” says Josh. “Weddings, birthdays, retirement parties, or any other occasions are welcome. We also can be flexible in assisting people in their party planning.”
Party Animal Vodka is available throughout the Wood River Valley and Stanley area, statewide in Idaho, Wyoming, and California, with plans to expand to neighboring states.

INTERNATIONAL ALPINE SKI R ACING RETURNS TO
SUN VALLEY
Creating a new turn on history
Classic Sun Valley racing terrain on Exhibition for men’s downhills, Canyon for women’s downhill and giant slaloms, and Holiday for slalom races
50 svpn- mag.c om
by David Butterfield
In 1937, when Sun Valley was a lodge in a cow pasture with the world’s first chairlift on a sage-covered hill, Averell Harriman envisioned his fledgling resort emulating European ski centers and their challenging races. With his nascent Sun Valley Ski Club, Harriman created the first Sun Valley International Open.
Lift-served runs on Dollar lacked the terrain for downhill racing, so a site was chosen in the Boulder range north of Ketchum. Competitors hiked on skis over 3,500 vertical feet, creating a loose course on their way. There was a start and a finish. Any tricky way through the woods was fair game. Hardy volunteers officiated and packed refreshments. Over 1,000 spectators witnessed racers completing runs of 5 to 20 minutes, and in a field of international stars, Dick Durrance was fastest. By winning the slalom the next day on Dollar, he took the combined and the first Harriman Cup.

Friedl Pfeifer racing slalom in 1941
The next year, women hiked and raced the same course as the men, and this instigated a major upgrade in competitor comforts. Gretchen Fraser remembers, “The race committee promised a ‘rustic powder room’ for the ladies. It turned out to be a pair of skis stuck in the snow with two Idaho potato sacks stretched across.”
The next two years the race was staged on the Warm Springs side of Baldy. A few control gates were added to limit creativity and chaos. Per a challenge by Harriman, anyone winning the combined three times would retire the big trophy and take it home. Dick Durrance did it by the 1940 race, and Harriman had to order a new Cup.
In 1941 courses were moved to the River Run side and followed the lift lines: Ridge, Rock Garden, Canyon, and River Run. The movie Sun Valley Serenade was released that fall and the resort’s reputation for romance and recreation soared. But after the ’42 competition, racing was interrupted by World War II.
The Harriman Cup resumed in 1947 on Warm Springs and Ruud Mountain. Notable competitors were Austrian/American Toni Matt, Gretchen Fraser, and French phenom Georgette Thioliere. In ‘48,
“The babble of half a dozen tongues, all discussing the same subject, forcefully brought to mind that with a common love such as skiing there inevitably exists good will on earth.”
—Gretchen Fraser, Gold Medalist at St. Moritz, 1948, the first post-war Olympics (1950 Sun Valley Ski Club Annual)
FEATURE

Jack Reddish won everything. Fraser was a forerunner, celebrating her medals from the St. Moritz Games. In ‘49 a rowdy course set by John Litchfield traversed from RidgeRock Garden to Olympic and thrilled spectators. French racers led by Henri Oreiller crowded the podiums.
Otto Lang raised the bar in 1950 by routing the men’s downhill to Exhibition, which he viewed as “…a supreme test of speed, stamina, and technical chicaneries.” The men faced a crushing compression where Exhibition met River Run and thousands of spectators gathered there for the inevitable carnage. The ‘50s were the heyday of Harriman Cup racing, featuring stellar Olympic medalists: Andrea Mead Lawrence, Stein Eriksen, Christian Pravda, Anderl Molterer, and Toni Sailer. Pravda won in ‘53, ‘56, and ‘59, and as Dick Durrance before him, retired the Cup. These were big community events. Even Ernest Hemingway hiked up Ruud to catch one of the slaloms.
In the early ‘60s, Americans Buddy Werner, Billy Kidd, Jimmy Heuga, and Barbara Ferries, sister of racer and valley resident Chuck Ferries, stormed the Harriman podiums. Saubert, Kidd, and Heuga also won medals at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics.
Averell Harriman became deeply involved in politics, and without his consent, Union Pacific sold Sun Valley to the Janss Corporation. In the 1965 race, Austrian superstar Karl Schranz dominated. Some felt he had an arrogant attitude as he insisted on a private limousine so his skis wouldn’t gather dust on the bus racks. Bill Janss accommodated him. Local construction maven and freestyle hero Charles McWilliams placed 24th in the downhill. If only he’d had the private limo.
In 1966, and again after the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, Sun Valley hosted the International Team Races. A grand ceremony welcomed competitors with local kids bearing flags and handing out swag. In the ‘68 downhill, Austrian Gerhart Nenning nipped triple gold medalist Jean Claude Killy by three-tenths. Slaloms were on Holiday, giant slaloms on Canyon. Killy and Canadian Nancy Greene took the podiums and were rumored to be an item off the hill. Karl Schranz wasn’t skiing his best, maybe because he stayed at the home of entertainer Ann Sothern and partied every night. The last time the great Exhibition downhill was ever run was in 1968.
In 1975 and 1977, World Cup races were staged on Greyhawk. Standouts were Ingemar Stenmark, Gustavo Thoeni, and the Mahre brothers. Among top women
“From what I’ve witnessed of the people here, the atmosphere is intense, and the participation will be immense. The other nations will feel it, from the athletes competing to their fans back home. Sun Valley offers so many things, but from its beginnings, it is a ski racing town. They will ensure it’s a great event and it will be a LOT of fun. The USSS couldn’t be more excited.”

We have worked together through the years, bringing world-class events and infrastructure into the Wood River Valley. The Sawtooth National Forest and the BLM, Shoshone Field office are proud to partner with Sun Valley, providing incredible experiences to the public. Bob Beattie’s World Pro Skiing fielded international stars in head-to-head competitions with Spider Sabich, Killy, and many more. According to race official, Nappy Neaman, Sun Valley events were spectacular, and the après and late-night parties? “We crushed it.”
Meanwhile, Janss’s investments weren’t working out expeditiously, and with perfect timing, the Holding family purchased Sun Valley in 1977. Their focus was on infrastructure and the guest experience. A pause in international racing lasted nearly 30 years, but during that time, the Holdings spectacularly upgraded every aspect of the resort without sacrificing its history and charm.

In 2007, the Honda Ski Tour was created by local financial wizard, serial philanthropist, and now Chairman of U.S. Ski and Snowboarding, Kipp Nelson. It brought ski and board cross races, half-pipe contests, top-talent concerts, and epic parties to Western resorts. The Harriman Cup was dusted off, and skier Chris Del Bosco and snowboarder Nate Holland added their names.
Sun Valley was awarded the 2016 and 2017 Alpine Nationals featuring the best U.S. racers. With resort and community synergy, these competitions went well, and we were tapped again for the ‘23 Nationals and this spring’s event.
Recently, news broke that Sun Valley will host the 2025 World Cup Finals. We’ll welcome the best racers in the world including atheletes like Mikaela Shiffrin and Marco Odermatt. All courses will be on Warm Springs. The

downhills will start on the top of International and lead to big air and high speeds on Greyhawk and Hemingway. The super-G and giant slalom will be Greyhawk courses well-established for Nationals, but there’s talk of holding the slalom on Race Arena.
It takes a community to stage world-class events. Resort staff and volunteers will step up to produce races, ceremonies, and entertainment. Local commerce will be energized. TV coverage will create fresh notoriety and lasting impressions. It’s been nearly 90 years since that first Sun Valley race, and we’re honoring tradition and carrying Averell Harriman’s grand vision into the future.
Sun Valley’s designation for hosting the World Cup Finals is pending official approval by the FIS (International Ski and Snowboard Federation) this spring. Barring unforeseen complications, the races will be staged March 16-24, 2025. Plans are underway, and the excitement is already building.

PUT TING DOWN ROOTS
Ketchum Remote Collective connects workers and community
by Martha Williams
Remote workers have long shaped the Wood River Valley’s workforce. For decades, locals have worked in the finance, tech, health, and education sectors from afar. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, this small population boomed, with many seeking to continue work they loved in a place they loved even more.
Natalie Gilbert has had connections to Sun Valley her entire life. She has family in the area and came for the holidays each year, and she always knew it was a magical place. After graduating college, Gilbert moved to Ketchum and found herself working four jobs to make ends meet. She’d constantly ask people she met on the chairlift and elsewhere: How are you making it work?
Eventually, she moved to Seattle to pursue a career in broadcast video technology. Her job at AWS Elemental went fully remote in 2020, and Gilbert jumped at the opportunity to move back to Sun Valley. She has since moved over to working for Paramount Global’s video technology group.
“I loved working remotely here in a career that I was passionate about,” she says. “And it allowed me to support myself and to continue doing the things I loved.”
But Gilbert missed the camaraderie of co-working. “It was very isolating. I wasn’t able to get involved with the community as much as I’d hoped to, which was one of the reasons I moved back.”

She knew there had to be others feeling the same way, so in 2023, she started asking around and one day set up a website for the Ketchum Remote Collective (KRC). The response was overwhelming and differed from what Gilbert had expected. Dozens of remote workers spanning generations and industries immediately signed up.
Now, with more than 60 members, the KRC is made up of full-time workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs working across the software, marketing, renewable energy, and other sectors. There are also psychologists, authors, and folks working from the coordinator level to the executive level.
“Remote work can mean so many things, and we want the KRC to encompass it all,” says Gilbert. “A bridge has been built between the longtime remote workers and the newer generation of remote workers. Everyone is equally valued and should feel welcome. We’re all here for the same reason: the lifestyle, the community. And we all experience the same unique challenges of remote work regardless of where we are or what we do.”
Nick Hegyesi, an entrepreneur developing a consultancy to support start-ups, joined the KRC as soon as he heard about the group. Originally from the Midwest, he’d been traveling through mountain towns for the last few years and came to Ketchum for what he thought was a short visit.
He and his partner, another remote worker in the healthcare industry, moved to the area sight unseen, were impressed by

the community, and decided to stay. They were always looking for ways to interact and leave an impact, even if that wasn’t through labor.
“It was perfect. I was interested in a social nexus where you could engage with people, give back to the town, and just find a place to just be,” he says.
As of now, the KRC gathers online and in person at The Community Library in Ketchum for “Workspace Fridays.” “We’re still gathering input and ideas,” says Gilbert, “but we have big plans for 2024.”
Among these plans are finding ways for members to share their skills by volunteering in the community. From expertise in artificial intelligence to branding, streaming, and more, the workers of KRC are eager to offer their skills

to meet community needs. The KRC also hopes to plan social and educational events, develop a mentorship program, and get involved in local career fairs. The big dream: become a 501(c)(3) non-profit and ultimately have their own co-working space.
“The way people work is changing,” says Gilbert. “The reason why people are here is not. And hopefully, what this collective does is help plant those roots a little more, allowing for people to continue to stay and work and grow here.”
She adds, “We’ll see what people want to make it,” she says of where the KRC will go. “The idea is to build for workers who are here, to be responsive to this community and connect us with the rest of the valley.”

LIVING IN AN AGE OF R AGE
Professor Jonathan Turley on constitutional law
by Sabina Dana Plasse
In our present day, the understanding and deconstruction of the Constitution of the United States, the supreme law of our nation, is a playing field of interpretations and battles, especially as the modern world evolves in its existence. Diving deeply into areas of the law, including those outside of his teaching and practice, the notable constitutional legal scholar Professor Jonathan Turley has spent three decades analyzing and understanding constitutional law.
With an impressive dossier of regular appearances as an onair legal analyst and expert on several network news outlets, including NBC, CBS, BBC, and FOX, Turley continues to be a consistent and welcome guest on Sunday talk shows such as Meet the Press, ABC This Week, Face the Nation, and Fox Sunday. In addition, Turley has written countless published articles on legal and policy issues, which appear regularly in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal. As a faculty staff member and law professor at George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., Turley teaches constitutional law, constitutional criminal law, environmental law, litigation, and torts.

“Reason is a stranger in the age of rage. It’s not always a comfortable position to occupy.”
—Jonathan Turley
“Working as a legal analyst requires you to be a jack of all trades,” says Turley. “One has to be very careful. However, being an academic adds to making sure things are correct. I try very hard to present what I believe is the current law.”
Asked to deconstruct newsworthy cases and analyze them according to the U.S. Constitution in their process of going to court or being decided in court can be perilous, describes Turley. “It can be stressful but keeps the work interesting, especially after 30 years of covering most areas of the law a few times. It’s rare to have a truly novel question in this arena.”
He adds, “Reason is a stranger in an age of rage. It’s not always a comfortable position to occupy. People feel very passionately about problems in our country. In a Manzonian line of constitutional system, it often matters as much how you do something as what you do. The road to authoritarianism is paved with good intentions. Every step, people justify extraconstitutional acts—good motivations and intent.”
In Turley’s new book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in the Age of Rage, he tackles the subject of free speech, expounding ideas that were, in the past, taught in high school through college but reveals that many of his students are encountering them for the very first time in law school.
“The greatest threat to liberty is often men of well-meaning,” cites Turley of Justice Brandeis. “And that some of our most serious problems have been self-inflicted and perhaps changing standards has introduced a dysfunctional process. I try to be an optimist about the future because historically, there has always been room for optimism.”
Working in this environment is not easy, comments Turley. “You have to work hard not to allow radical voices to change how you view the world. Most people are reasonable. It’s easy to become bitter and negative with unrelenting campaign attacks, including lawyers trained in understanding the law. Even they succumb to this type of intolerance.”
Turley adds, “Being a law professor and commentator is a huge privilege. I never forget this. Being able to speak to people about national importance is an incredible privilege.

It comes at a cost but is rewarding, even when you anger your friends. There is a cathartic aspect to being able to speak about what you believe are legal parameters and dealing with our national problems. We have been resilient about repairing the damage we have done to ourselves. Still, I am worried about this particular age of rage because this is the most dangerous anti-free speech period I have ever seen in this country’s history.”
Turley has served as counsel in some of our nation’s most notable legal cases in the last two decades, representing whistleblowers, military personnel, judges, and members of Congress. His award-winning blog was ranked in the top 20 constitutional law blogs and has been regularly ranked by the ABA Journal as one of the top 100 blogs in the world.
The Sun Valley Policy Forum will present Jonathan Turley as he speaks on “Constitutional Powers, Federalism, and Protecting Our Freedoms,” March 26, at 6pm at The Argyros. Sun Valley Wellness presents The Last Ecstatic Days
by Aurora Wilkinson
In 1997, a community-led initiative sought to fill the lull of the spring season, leading to the creation of the Sun Valley Wellness Festival. Cheryl Welch Thomas, owner of the local, Chapter One Bookstore, and Carol Waller collaborated with community members to bring this vision to life. Since then, the Sun Valley Wellness Festival has evolved into one of the world’s most enduring wellness events. Operating as a nonprofit, the institute provides a platform addressing the holistic well-being of the mind, body, spirit, and environment. Throughout its history, the festival has attracted esteemed speakers and thought-leaders. As the Sun Valley Wellness Festival evolves, it signifies itself as an integral part of the Wood River Valley community.

“The film is a kaleidoscopic documentary that invites viewers to experience one man’s death journey through his layers of consciousness.”
— Scott Kirschenbaum
Catering to individuals of diverse ages and backgrounds, from wellness enthusiasts to advocates for positive change, Sun Valley Wellness remains committed to expanding sciencebacked mental and physical health knowledge. Emphasizing sessions and workshops that celebrate the human spirit while promoting environmental consciousness, the organization embodies a comprehensive approach to wellness.
After commemorating 25 years of success and experiencing the loss of co-founder Cheryl Welch Thomas, the board of directors has decided to restructure its involvement with the community. While the annual festival will not return, the public can anticipate community-supported events throughout 2024.
“Following our 25th anniversary, we decided to take some time to ensure the core of our mission was still being served best,” says Holly Mora, a Sun Valley Wellness board member and Cheryl’s daughter. “We felt a need to shift Sun Valley Wellness from a local tourist event to a place of communitybased wellness programming.”
This spring, Sun Valley Wellness, alongside supporter Bex Wilkinson, is curating this year’s event list. They are excited to have filmmaker Scott Kirschenbaum joining them. Kirschenbaum has been making important documentaries since the early 2000s. One of his films, You’re Looking at Me Like I Live Here, And I Don’t, discusses Alzheimer’s and is shown on PBS. Another, A Soapbox in Haiti , was on ABC World News and is used in Haitian studies programs. His film about childbirth, These Are My Hours, is popular in birth courses worldwide. Kirschenbaum tells powerful stories, and his involvement in this year’s event will surely bring valuable insights and inspiration.
Sun Valley Wellness is thrilled to present Kirschenbaum’s latest masterpiece, The Last Ecstatic Days, which beautifully portrays the inspiring journey of Ethan Sisser. Through this film, audiences meet Ethan, a gentle soul confronting terminal brain cancer.
72 svpn- mag.c om
What truly distinguishes Ethan is his courage in openly sharing his journey on social media and his remarkable ability to surrender and accept during his final days.
Director Kirschenbaum reflects on the profound lessons he learned from Ethan. He says, “Though Ethan was ultimately paralyzed on his deathbed, he remained embodied, empowered, and ecstatic until his final breath. Ethan demonstrated a new way of being in the world—far more loving and heart-forward.”
Throughout Ethan’s battle with cancer, Kirschenbaum sensitively captures the outpouring of support from thousands of followers. With the aid of his family, friends, and dedicated “death doula,” Aditi Sethi M.D., Ethan was able to leave a legacy of compassion, love, and resilience. During their time together, Kirschenbaum marvels at Ethan’s remarkable capacity to find gratitude amidst adversity and uncertainty. In sharing Ethan’s story, he and Kirschenbaum challenge societal taboos surrounding death and promote a message of normalcy and compassion in the face of life’s most difficult moments.
“We felt a need to shift Sun Valley Wellness from a local tourist event to a place of communitybased wellness programming.”
— Holly Mora
Before its showing in Sun Valley, The Last Ecstatic Days was shown nationwide. The film recently premiered at the Santa Fe International Film Festival to soldout audiences and rave reviews. Critics and audiences alike have hailed the film’s in-depth storytelling, with The Boston Globe calling it a “…courageous end-of-life chronicle, which overflows with compassion and shows us how to live mindfully while embracing curiosity about what lies beyond.”
“The film is a kaleidoscopic documentary that invites viewers to experience one man’s death journey through his layers of consciousness…” says Kirschenbaum. “By interweaving 18 months of viral social media posts and podcast interviews with the more cinéma vérité filmmaking from the last two weeks of Ethan’s life, I hope that audiences can immerse themselves in and bear witness to the raw, unvarnished, and noble journey of meeting your death with meaning and a sense of self-love.”
The movie will be screened on Saturday, June 1, at the Sun Valley Opera House. Following the film, viewers are encouraged to stay for a panel discussion on the movie’s theme, “conscious dying,” with esteemed community members. Tickets will be sold online and in person at the Sun Valley Wellness headquarters at Chapter One Bookstore in Ketchum.

LAZY TRIPLE CREEK RANCH
A Teton Valley sporting adventure

by Roger Sanger
The western continental divide states of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana are noted for their beauty and recreational attraction. Sun Valley, Grand Targhee, Jackson Hole, and Big Sky are world-famous for recreation, especially skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking, and biking.
Ernest Hemingway lived in all three states but was drawn out of Montana and Wyoming in 1939 by Averell Harriman and the Union Pacific Railroad Company. It is thought that Hemingway drove through the Teton Valley area of eastern Idaho on his way to the Sun Valley Lodge to write and promote, along with other famous stars, the Sun Valley experience. Rumor further speculates that he was enthralled by the beauty and isolation of the Teton Valley, which is just over the pass from Jackson Hole. But, Hemingway came to love Sun Valley and its citizens so much that it became one of his three residences including Key West and Cuba. His sporting exploits here became the centerpiece of many of his novels.
Teton Valley has a magnificent view of the Grand Tetons. Most photos of these famous peaks were probably taken from the Teton Valley side of eastern Idaho. Here, the many rolling hills, streams, and creeks are reminiscent of the topography found in Scotland, Wales, and England, famous for the British sports of Edwardian-driven bird shooting, stag hunting, and trout and salmon angling.

Now, what if you could experience the same beauty and recreation that you can find in the British Isles but without the expenses, annoyance of travel, and loss of recreational time? What if that were in the world-famous Teton Valley? What if you could experience world-class clay shooting, guided-driven bird shooting, guided elk hunting, and guided fly fishing for trout with accommodations at a ranch estate with first-class lodging, cuisine, and staff in the Teton Valley?
Well, this author has found it at Lazy Triple Creek Ranch (LTCR)! I have hunted and fished in the British Isles. LTCR is better than anything else that is advertised in the U.S. as comparable to the British Isles for beauty and recreation.
Lazy Triple Creek Ranch, in the Big Hole Mountains of the Teton Valley, has been the favored destination of many outdoor sports enthusiasts wishing to enjoy hunting, shooting, and fishing in easy proximity to their residences in Sun Valley. What started out as a cattle ranch generations ago in the Teton Valley has been developed into a recreational paradise with a beautiful and modern western-style lodge with nine en-suite bedrooms and eleven bathrooms befitting the culture, tradition, and elegance of Western hospitality.
Couple this with elegant cuisine and drink, knowledgeable and helpful staff, and guides.
The ranch provides sporting clay shooting for all levels and abilities of shooters from beginner to expert. Clay shooting includes simulated bird shooting mimicking driven birds from hills, incoming grouse butt shooting, as well as trap, skeet, five- stand, and a 14-station clays walking course described as one of the most diverse and fun courses in the world. There is a rifle and pistol shooting range as well. All of this in terrain and beauty reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands.
Beginning in late August, the focus at LTCR shifts to upland bird hunting with European-style driven shoots as well as walk-up hunting with guides and dogs. The ranch also specializes for one week in October for trophy elk hunting. In winter, LTCR ranch can be a snowmobile paradise.
For the “Cast and Blast” enthusiast, the ranch is in the middle of the iconic trout rivers of eastern Idaho—Henry’s Fork, South Fork, Madison, and Teton—all within 45

minutes of the lodge. A little over an hour away, the mountain biker, hiker, photographer, and wildlife viewer can enjoy the Jackson Hole area with its picturized peaks and mountain lakes. The same for access to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. And, of course, for the addictive shopper and cuisine lover Jackson Hole is also a mecca for art galleries, shopping, and famous restaurants and historical bars.
All of this is within an easy drive from Sun Valley. In your dreams, one would expect Ernest Hemingway to be sitting on the deck at LTCR lodge, smoking his signature Arturo Fuente cigar and drinking his favorite daiquiri.

“Limbert was the standard, a true pioneer and renaissance man. He exuded energy and accomplished so much for Idaho tourism. We wanted to award him a more prominent feature here.”
—Austin Clegg
by Lori Williams
Redfish Lake Lodge swells with history’s echo and our collective memories, and each visit to this beautiful high alpine haven is a straddle of the past and present. The iconic rustic lodge and cabins have maintained their lakeside charm and nostalgia for over a century through generations of families and visitors.
Redfish Lake began drawing visitors when a wagon road was built over Galena Summit in the early 1880s, which was improved upon in the early 1900s—word spread of its natural beauty and the teeming red sockeye. Redfish Lake was no longer a hidden gem. A man named Dick Horstmann received permits to build the Lake Hotel and a small boat rental business, thereby establishing the Redfish Lake Marina. But when he died in 1928, it was Robert Limbert, with whom Horstmann had been working on plans for a lodge, who received control of the concession as part of their business dealings. This adventurer, naturalist, entrepreneur, and more created what is our beloved Redfish Lake Lodge, opened in 1929, beginning with a gas station, eight canvas tent cabins, a dining room, a kitchen, second-floor lodging rooms, a small dock, and two motorboats.

In 1958, the Forest Service began an era of significant development near the lake, beginning with campgrounds along the shoreline, a boat launch, and Visitor’s Center, which first opened in 1962. What Limbert had in mind for this recreational outpost resounds today, “for the person who wants to turn his back on the grinding roar of the civilized world and seek the quiet and peace of this primitive, untouched, mountain country,” he wrote in a 1932 promotional brochure.
The Forest Service-leased property has had numerous owners over its century-old history who have improved upon Limbert’s original work. Since 1999, the current owners are Jerome, Idaho, natives Arlen and Derrel Crouch, whose family history here dates back to when Arlen visited as a child. Jeff and Audra Clegg, son-in-law and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Crouch, manage the day-to-day operations of Redfish Lake Lodge. Every year, the family directs resources towards improvements to preserve this iconic oasis.

“When there is something in your nature that makes you sit and dream, of the wind and the pine trees and the murmuring of the stream;
When that something keeps a’ calling till you feel you want to go,
Start your journey, travel westward, to the land called Idaho.”
—Robert Limbert
On the property, there are 21 historic and modern cabins, 11 motel/suite-style units, and eight lodge rooms. The quaint General Store next to the lodge offers souvenirs, gifts, basic groceries, and camping and fishing supplies. The Redfish Marina sits directly in front of the Lodge, providing boat rentals and a hiking shuttle into the beautiful Sawtooth Wilderness Area.
Austin Clegg, the grandson of Arlen and Derrel Crouch, is the Marketing Coordinator and Director of Employee & Guest Relations. Naturally, he grew up along the shores of Redfish Lake. “It’s such a special place and an honor for our family to be its stewards,” says Clegg. “It’s emotional, it’s spiritual, it’s family.”
About six years ago, the family named the Lodge restaurant Limbert’s for the sole purpose of emphasizing the story of founder Robert Limbert. “Amongst all the summer energy
and the upgrades, we felt called to go back and talk a little bit more about our history because it’s such an important and fascinating part of Redfish,” explains Clegg. “Limbert was the standard, a true pioneer and renaissance man. He exuded energy and accomplished so much for Idaho tourism. We wanted to award him a more prominent feature here.”
In 2017, the Crouch family purchased the first of three properties in Stanley for additional guest lodging, which includes the Redfish Riverside Inn, Triangle C Cabins, and the Stanley High Country Inn. “We can’t really add—nor would we want to—any additional cabins or facilities at Redfish, but the demand was certainly there,” says Clegg. “It’s been awesome to have these. Each of the properties has its own little character, personality, and history.”
The Sawtooth National Recreation Area has been working on improvements to the Redfish Lake Recreation Complex, including Forest Road #214, the paved shoreline trail, the North Shore Picnic Area, and the Visitor Center parking lot. Forest Road #214 and access to Glacier View Campground is currently planned to reopen May 19, 2024. The North Shore Picnic Area, Visitor Center, paved shoreline trail, and vehicle access to Redfish Cabin will reopen by June 26, 2024.
“The resort looks for another memorable year at the lake, beginning with the Memorial Day Fun Run and a weekly lineup of live music,” says Clegg. Opening day this year is May 22, a few days before the holiday weekend and a great time for Wood River Valley locals to christen a summer of fun before the peak crowds. Come for the beach, sapphire ripples under a radiant blue sky, ice cream, and that oftreferred mountain magic. Come collect some memories. redfishlake.com

LOOK UP IN THE SK Y
It’s the heroes of Air St. Luke’s
134 svpn- mag.c om
by Joy Prudek
Being in a remote area comes with many of benefits. In the case of the Sun Valley area, beautiful mountains invite us to hike, bike, and ski. Rivers and lakes offer plenty of recreation and relaxation. You may look up at the sky and marvel at its magnificent indigo color. Sometimes, you look up and see a hero in flight. Often, these heroes are the men and women who are part of Air St. Luke’s (ASL) and are working to care for patients with time-sensitive emergencies needing specialized care. Time-sensitive emergencies include acute myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), strokes, and priority trauma patients. ASL also has a Maternal Child team specializing in high-risk OB, premature infant care, and pediatric care. Air St. Luke’s is the region’s most comprehensive medical transport program.
The helicopters, airplanes, and ambulances are designed as mobile critical care units with advanced lifesaving equipment and technology. Air St. Luke’s pilots require significant experience and advanced certificates. Registered Nurses (RNs) require multiple years of experience in intensive care and the emergency room to achieve their certified Flight RN status. Paramedics require multiple years of experience in a busy 911 advanced life support service and must achieve Certified Flight Paramedic status.

Bell 429 while on a daytime mountain response
When the ASL communication center receives a transport call, they dispatch the crews by radio, and the team based on the aircraft, including the pilot, readies for a quick response. The pilot accepts the flight by radio, and the pre-flight checklist is completed during startup. Blaine Patterson, EMS Director for Air St. Luke’s, St. Luke’s Health System, and Magic Valley Paramedics is proud of his team’s readiness for a rapid response. The communication center updates the requesting agency or facility with the ETA of the aircraft. Upon arriving, the crew takes the necessary equipment to the patient’s side, including a transport ventilator, cardiac monitor, IV pump, and other specialty equipment.
Dr. Deb Robertson, an Emergency Physician in SLWR’s Emergency Department, explains one of the ways having
From car accidents to heart attacks, Air St. Luke’s is protection in an emergency, especially when you’re far from a major hospital.
ASL is instrumental, “Certain types of heart attacks are ideally treated in a heart catheter lab within a certain time frame—the American Heart Association recommends getting patients to a heart catheter lab within 120 minutes from a rural area to open up blocked heart blood vessels. Without Air St. Luke’s, we would never make that timeframe.”
Robertson notes that our local paramedics are trained and can recognize this type of heart attack and can call for air transport before arriving at the hospital to help shorten the time to get to the cath lab. In this case, the helicopter may arrive before or shortly after the patient, which shortens the time for transport to the nearest heart catheter lab. This is an excellent reason to call 911 for symptoms such

as chest pains, stroke symptoms, and extreme weakness. Robertson adds that ASL can also provide an extra pair of hands at the bedside in the ED, particularly helpful when the hospital has several significantly ill or injured patients and hospital resources are stretched thin.
In addition to the frequent trips to the helipad on the roof of St. Luke’s Wood River, the crews also respond directly to the scene. While the roof takeoffs and landings are always impressive, the pilots often have more congested and challenging areas to land, like highways with lots of vehicle and foot traffic near an accident scene or in heavily wooded or steep and often snow-covered terrain areas.
Patients are taken to the closest appropriate facility that can provide timely interventions to increase their survival rate and quality of life post-event, which is not necessarily a St. Luke’s facility. Patterson discusses the difference response and transport can make, “There have been so many success stories and remarkable recoveries that it is hard to pick one that I can describe. The processes that expedite transport for Stroke and STEMI (heart attack) from the Wood River facility have proven vital in saving lives and maintaining the quality of life for those patients. Rapid identification, rapid activation, rapid response, and rapid transport to the interventional unit has been instrumental in the outcomes for many of those patients.”
Air St. Luke’s is constantly looking to do even better. They embrace the triple aim in health care: High quality, lower cost, and better outcomes through integrated and coordinated care with the regional hospitals. One way they strive to improve is through reinvesting in their people and their equipment. For example, the helicopters have dual engines, making it possible to lift more pounds, carry
a higher load, fly faster, and shut down quicker. This can be critical in time-sensitive emergencies. The helicopters they choose also have more space to take care of patients.
The relationship with St. Luke’s offers cross-training in departments such as surgery to continue to develop lifesaving skills. The training goes both ways. Robertson explains that ASL recently provided supplies and trainers for a critical care skills lab for the ED physicians. “Since they bring mannequins, supplies, and trainers, we opened up the training to additional physicians and nurses, which helps strengthen their skills and ultimately helps patients,” she says.
From bases in Boise and Twin Falls, ASL serves southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, and northern Nevada. Through its partners in the Association of Air Medical Memberships Programs (AAMMP), coverage for Air St. Luke’s members extends to northern and eastern Idaho, Oregon, Washington, western Montana, and northern California south to the Santa Barbara area. An ASL membership also has reciprocity with Portland, Oregon-based Life Flight Network, which has a helicopter transport team in Burley, Boise, and Rexburg.
From car accidents to heart attacks, Air St. Luke’s is protection in an emergency, especially when you’re far from a major hospital. An Air St. Luke’s annual membership fee waives any portion of the bill not covered by insurance. At $60/year, it is a bargain compared to the cost without membership, and it is peace of mind when you or a loved one needs to be transported to the closest, most appropriate care facility. Air St. Luke’s improves the quality of life for our community, lessening the risk of being in a remote area.

MEDITATION, NATURALLY
by Erica Linson
We humans generally feel better when we immerse ourselves in nature. Confirming our experience, the profound healing effects of spending time in nature are scientifically well-documented. People find Sun Valley enchanting not only because they enjoy what they do here but because they—we—feel better here.
Along with the stunning beauty, sunshine, and fresh air, what might explain the magic? Physics notes that all physical matter, nature included, resonates. The feeling of being in the Wood River Valley—we might say, the energy of this place—is palpable. And because each of us as a material being also resonates, we can be affected by the qualities (vibrations!) of our surroundings. Just like the movements of independent metronomes unify after starting randomly, and women hormonally

come to cycle together when living in close quarters, we naturally tend to match—sync with—what is around us.
People find Sun Valley enchanting not only because they enjoy what they do here but because they—we— feel better here.
We can use this to our benefit. Given the prevalence of mental health issues and stressors in our culture, let’s connect with what’s real and centering. The earth has a slower, deeper resonance than we do. We can consciously “ground” and connect our energy to the earth’s energy. It’s a way of becoming present in our bodies and tuning into one of the biggest allies for wellbeing that we have going. Harmonizing with our planet invites us to balance our circadian rhythms, shed stress, and experience vibrantly our physicality. And this is just scratching the surface!

SUGGESTIONS FOR LEARNING TO GROUND
GROUNDING CORD
Visualize a connection between the base of your spine and the center of the earth.
NATURE
Try sitting next to a tree and matching it vibrationally. Imagine reaching roots into the earth.
CLASSES
When you are in a group that is grounding, the experience becomes quite tangible.
Erica Linson teaches classes at Zenergy Health Club & Spa throughout the year in Ketchum and via Zoom.
“And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.”
—John Muir
We all know the difference between feeling grounded and feeling scattered, between being centered versus stressed out. Grounding is a basic skill to change our state no matter the circumstances—a conflict situation, difficult news, skiing Baldy. When we ground, we increase a sense of security. We can shift more easily into the parasympathetic nervous system (the relaxation and healing response) out of our all-too-common stressed and anxious states. It also invites more creativity and wisdom: when we feel more secure, our defenses can soften and open up, fostering increased awareness and healthier relationships (for those familar with attachment theory, think “secure attachment” with the planet!).
One impediment to tapping into the power of the subtle is our worldview. Unlike cultures that have words and traditions involving energy (chi, prana, martial arts, acupuncture…) our Western culture largely lacks the concepts and language to access the subtle energy inherent in our world. Consequently, few here have had the advantage of learning to work with it. While I have limited myself in this article to touch on the concept of grounding, there are many ways to start to experience energy. Accessing the unseen around us is more natural and available than most think. Skills can be acquired with guidance and practice. After all, it’s how we’re made.
Playing with energy is effective, refreshing, and might I add, fun. In my meditation classes, we start by learning to ground. Additional skills create healthy boundaries, and turn sensitivity into a gift rather than having it be a liability. From these fundamentals we go on to learn an array of other skills to energetically learn about and heal ourselves, others, and the planet.
Learn to relate more deeply with the earth here in this beautiful place, and you can bring the benefits with you wherever you go.

LET YOUR MUSCLES THRIVE
Dr. Molly Brown on peak performance

The sports world is witnessing such a high level of athleticism and achievement. It’s amazing. This high level, though, is not risk-free, and often, it’s difficult for athletes to get through even a high school level of sports injury-free. Our methods witness injury-free athletes and athletes who thrive at their highest level. The AMIT method, the Advanced Muscle Integration Technique, is a neuromuscular activation “secret weapon” that is an elite athlete’s powerhouse. When combined with talent and dedication, this method offers limitless potential activation.
The body is an intricate, highly tuned orchestra of brain and body integration involving the muscular system, digestion, the brain, hormones, and much more. In the neuromuscular system, each muscle is a musician in its own right. The impact when one “musician” falls silent is a subtle disharmony in the body. This is muscle inhibition and a precursor to instability and injury. The AMIT method identifies and engages these inhibited muscles to restore the symphony of the human body to its full, vibrant potential.

At CENTERED, we encounter athletes who are talented and dedicated yet plagued by recurring injuries or a weakened immune system and are just not achieving their peak potential. This is where our methods step in—delving deep into the body’s neurology to reignite the connection between brain and muscle. By reactivating muscles that have been inhibited due to overuse, trauma, injury, strain, hormone fluctuation, or sickness, this method restores functional integrity and resilience to the musculoskeletal system, increasing strength, stability, and proprioception and preventing injury.
The benefits of the AMIT method extend beyond injury prevention. Athletes of all levels report back with stories of enhanced strength, increased flexibility, and heightened endurance, all elements that can elevate a talented athlete to improved performance and wins. This is performance optimization in its pure form, both an art and a science, allowing athletes to focus on their training and strategy rather than just getting by on old injuries and compensations.
This method combines 17 different modalities in one technique. We see miracles happen daily with this work. It is “one of the most effective treatments for reversing permanent injuries,” as stated by Tim Ferriss in The 4-Hour Body. And NBA Hall of Fame legend John Stockton says that the AMIT method produces “amazing results” without needing drugs or surgery. The method fortifies our foundation of strength. It sets a new standard in sports performance, where injury is an exception, not an expectation. This method aligns seamlessly with my belief in the inherent ability to achieve excellence given the proper tools.
The AMIT method calls on athletes and coaches to rethink the conventional approach to training and recovery. With this work on board, each stride, stroke, and sprint is based on neuromuscular harmony. In a world where the finest margins often dictate sports performance, the AMIT method provides the edge to turn near-misses into podium finishes.
The AMIT method, the Advanced Muscle Integration Technique, is a neuromuscular activation “secret weapon” that is an elite athlete’s powerhouse.
As Dr. Buhler so brilliantly explains the degeneration process, “Once a muscle is inhibited, it can no longer contract in a normal way. The pain centers fire to protect the tissue, and muscle contraction is limited and painful. The inhibition remains years after the injury has healed. The more the muscle is stressed, the more the pain increases. This means the injured person begins to walk and run differently to protect the foot. This will eventually lead to knee, hip, and low back pain or injury.”
As we stand at the threshold of a new era in sports medicine, it is clear that the AMIT method is so much more than a technique—it is a transformative force. For the athlete, it offers a career defined by longevity and devoid of the setbacks that too often cut dreams short, even at a young age. For the coach, it provides the peace of mind that their athletes are prepared and primed for success.
Our clinic has the privilege of supporting health and facilitating breakthroughs, and the AMIT method stands as a testament to the boundless potential of the human spirit. It is a modality that embodies my commitment to innovation, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of health and vitality. The art of science and health and the creativity in that process are inextricably linked. The future of sports performance lies in the possibility that every athlete can harness their potential and realize their peak performance.

For many years my family, our friends and clients would not consider ying into SUN because the costs were prohibitive, and the travel routes and frequency were inconvenient. However, through the ongoing e orts of Fly Sun Valley Alliance, that has changed dramatically for the better – the frequency of ights from the historical destinations has increased, a new airline and new nonstop destinations have been added, and equally important, airfares at SUN have become more competitive with the other regional options. ON THE MOVE
The visual humor of Matt Duffin
by Beth Rush
If you have ever watched PBS’s Mystery! you will remember the illustrative opening by Edward Gorey. This is the first thing that struck me about artist Matt Duffin’s delicately rendered, illustrative, and narrative encaustic paintings. At first glance, the precision and comedic vignettes are reminiscent of Edward Gorey’s illustrations, the silly and macabre meeting in fine line drawings. While Gorey used pen and ink, Duffin, who began with pen and ink, now employs wax, heat, and pigment to create stories that make the viewer laugh and question.
Duffin, like Gorey, plays on our sense of the mysterious and what can make the mysterious lighthearted and funny. Tinged with visual humor and surrealist sensibility, Mr. Potatohead becomes an outlaw, the Kool-Aid Man a faceless giant, and an empty La-Z-Boy a solo rider on an amusement park ride.
On the Move at Gilman Contemporary explores an interior world of contrast and contradiction. There is a darkly humorous innocence throughout Duffin’s body of work; his figures are unexpected and quirky. Giving life to inanimate objects, we are treated to visual narratives that are uneasy yet lighthearted.
These labor-intensive paintings are smoothly executed, there are sharp planes and high contrast, and they have a

spatial understanding that stems from Duffin’s training as an architect. Using this skill, his work evolved technically and visually. Limiting his color palette has allowed Duffin to challenge our sense of reality and imagination. His medium is one that takes years of practice and patience. In giving us something to latch onto, Duffin allows us to wonder at the lives of inanimate objects.
Whether referencing “Chupacabra,” a vampiric creature that haunts livestock throughout the Americas, Pinocchio, or a seemingly endless amusement park ride, Duffin engages his viewer with tongue-in-cheek humor. With deft execution, an almost drained bright red Kool-Aid Man looms over suspicious lambs, one of whom has a pale blue pacifier, bringing a sense of the absurd. Black and white dominate, but the subtle shifting in the detailed sheep and the bright red of the Kool-Aid Man draw the viewer closer and highlight the smooth and luminous surface.
In Duffin’s hands, Mr. Potatohead stares with baby blue eyes that meet ours as he sits across a table laden with both his missing ear and a pile of coins; across from

him, Bigfoot stares him down. Entitled Listen, I Know they’re pricey…, we see Mr. Potatohead’s conundrum but are given the chance to interpret what exactly that conundrum is. A wheel of bright red boxing gloves seems to propel an empty classic La-Z-Boy up a steep wooden roller coaster etched into a black surface; with the title Haymaker, we are led to wonder at the imagery. Duffin’s work holds both light and dark, silly and serious, and gives us a mirror of our memories.
For Duffin, “Visual humor is a universal language— everybody gets it. No matter what your level of schooling with regard to art, the only thing that matters when the art is about humor is whether or not the piece is funny. If it accomplishes that goal, then it is successful.”
Each painting is a narrative capsule subverting our expectations of commercially familiar characters. Kool-Aid Man and Mr. Potatohead are given new life; they are goofy yet ominous. About the origin of his imagery, Duffin says, “My process stems from a fascination that I have with darkness and the myriad feelings that it evokes—melancholy, tranquility, mystery. I always start with this as a backdrop.” Whether a familiar character or the suggestion of light in darkness, Duffin captures a neurotic humor that will make the viewer chuckle.

SENSE OF PLACE
A Venice continuum for Judith Kindler
by Raine Kidder
You’ve probably experienced it before: a feeling, a connection, a perception of familiarity—a sense of place. For Judith Kindler, that place is Venice, the visceral familiarity. The city’s elegance, strength, and dedication to creative expression throughout history vibrate throughout. Perhaps it is this devotion to the creation of beauty and love of creative expression—its essence—that brings forth an inescapable attraction. Kindler’s newest series of mixed media paintings, Leaving Traces on Venice Walls, is a compilation of over 30 paintings utilizing images from her 2006 series Surface (photographed in Venice) and is at once a continuation of her past and a portal to future work—the continuum of ideas reemerging.
“When I go there, I feel like it is home, familiar, like, perhaps I lived there once,” says Kindler. “Walking the streets and traveling in the canals in such a beautiful environment with the old architecture juxtaposed with the new art fills me with immense joy. So, I love Venice, its history, theatre, opera, and museums, from the violin museum to Peggy Guggenheim’s remarkable collection. As you walk through the many

neighborhoods, they tell stories of their past, in many ways buried on the surfaces of the walls, leading me to capture these surfaces in a large body of photographic work. I bring my painting to bear, adding my illusion and desire to be part of Venice in this new series of work.”
VENICE
To understand the inspiration for Leaving Traces, we must go back in time. An excursion to Venice in 2006 was an expedition to focus Kindler’s lens on its architecture and walls, encompassing the storied, iconic history and the artist’s love of the city. Inspired by the addition of graffiti asserted onto them (a new addition since her last sojourn and fueled by the political climate of the time), Kindler began looking at the walls as paintings, the graffiti as a form of expression. Creating compositions out of aspects that were contradictory, spontaneous or humorous,

expressive, and surprising, Kindler used her lens to capture moments in a conversation imbued on the surfaces. A new insight into Venice emerged, resulting in over 200 photographs printed in 40” x 60” large format images. Thus, the collection, known as Surface, was created as a celebration of the history and richly textured beauty of Venice—a visceral experience came to life in the photographs.
Leaving Traces on Venice Walls combines the photographs from the Surface collection with Kindler’s painting on top of the images. The textures, patterns, and intricate details of the walls are profound in each of Kindler’s original photographs and lay the foundation for this body of work. These photographs are transformed by utilizing her mark-making, familiar motifs, her graffiti being the latest chapter of this ongoing exchange, in which she now has become an integral part. Each piece is composed of a distinctive technique blended with and inspired by the artist’s compositions underneath and the city itself. The layering and highlighting of disparate elements create a contradictory tension, while others have a sublime overlay where images within the photographs are peering behind a veil of floating flowers and a virtually translucent layer of paint. Some are bold and colorful with humorous nuances, and there are others where the artist’s light touch highlights the complex beauty of the walls. Each painting, integrated with the photographs, tells a uniquely inspired story— playful, exuberant, and witty in Kindler’s riveting delivery.
“Then I decided that this is what I must capture,” says Kindler. “This moment in time reflected off surfaces that have survived many ages and have witnessed many postings and heard many voices. The city that appeared never to change now appears not only to change but struggles to hide it. I became absorbed with the idea of time and change and my desire to leave a mark on this remarkable place.”

Happiness 1 (Carnival) Acrylic and photography on panel 72” x 36” 2024
“Walking the streets and traveling in the canals in such a beautiful environment with the old architecture juxtaposed with the new art fills me with immense joy. So, I love Venice, its history, theatre, opera, and museums, from the violin museum to Peggy Guggenheim’s remarkable collection.”
—Judith Kindler
For decades, Kindler’s art has been a discourse on the chaos and complexities of the human condition and contemporary life. Her art is an imaginative and curious dichotomy, where she explores concepts of desire, truth, beauty, and identity. As an accomplished multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture, photography, painting, installations, and mixed media, she is known for her diverse use of media in the expression of narrative and conceptual ideas. A departure from work that historically tends to put the focus on psychological themes reflecting her interest in the nature of the subconscious and the commonality of the human condition, this collection is looking at things from a more historical point of view.
Struck by the rich history of Venice, its architecture, the intricacies of the surfaces, and what time has done to them, Kindler focused her eye on the story within a shift in perception that the walls were not just telling us an account of the past but currently speaking a language of the present. This collection is less of a reimagining than a transformation. Experientially metamorphosizing the interaction of her paintings with the photography, Kindler has created a new narrative about the history and a sense of place. Striking or subdued, Kindler’s imagery tickles our subconscious.
Kindler is galvanized by an endless creative execution of the expression of her ideas, where she consistently pushes the boundaries of her chosen medium. Leaving Traces on Venice Walls is a cantata that resonates with history, making it come alive—bringing it into the present. Playing off the existing textures, imagery, and words, adding her storytelling with the interplay of iconic imagery and painting, Kindler invites us to look deeper and pull back the layers to discover the hidden stories within.

LEAVING TRACES ON VENICE WALLS
Leaving Traces on Venice Walls is accompanied by a limited-edition book titled Judith Kindler/Leaving Traces on Venice Walls. Beautifully designed by the artist, the 12” x 12” hardcover coffee table book includes over 50 images of the artwork in the collection alongside photos of Venice. Additionally, the artist has added images from past collections to serve as a prologue to this body of work, of early inspirations of mark-making and the artist’s iconic imagery that inspired Leaving Traces on Venice Walls, as well as newer pieces that are a continuation of and influenced by the Leaving Traces series. Over 75 pages of text, written by Raine Kidder with personal anecdotes by the artist, are printed in a lay-flat format and available through Blurb.
“This return to Venice showed me so much about life, about myself, about our need to be heard. But it especially taught me about life’s unique contradictions,” explains Kindler.
Judith Kindler is an honored and award-winning artist whose work has been exhibited in select galleries and museums worldwide and featured in numerous publications. Multiple books and catalogs focusing exclusively on her work have been published.
The collection continues to be available through Judith Kindler Art. For more information, email judithkindler@gmail.com

Opening Reception
Friday, March 8, 5-7:30pm
A native of Hailey, Idaho, and now residing in Montana, Caleb Meyer has always enjoyed the rugged beauty of the Northwest. A graduate of Boise State University, he continued his education through an apprenticeship with renowned artist Robert Moore. Meyer compares his time in Moore’s studio to laying a strong foundation. Meyer is now an established artist in his own right and features in public and private collections nationwide. He says, “The painting process is like building a house, a painter must understand the principles of design to create a strong painting, and much like a carpenter must understand the principles of architecture to build a strong house.”

Idaho native Silas Thompson has quickly become a familiar name amongst collectors. On annual backpacking trips with his father, he began to treasure the distinct birthmarks and icons of beautiful rivers, valleys, and mountains that carve through the high desert and farmlands of the West. His desire to create work that evokes a memory continues to be a driving force, which pushes Silas to be innovative in his choice of subject matter and composition. Thompson’s work also shows the influence of his mentor, Robert Moore, through his use of textural brushwork and vivid color.
Bart Walker paints the allure of the wild land. He uses oil sketches done in the field to recollect nature’s beauty on the finished canvas. His radiant plein air paintings are reminiscent of the early California impressionist landscapes, alive with deft brushwork and nuances of light. He and his wife Tracy have made their home in the dramatic setting of Teton Valley, which forms the inspiration for much of his work.

Matt Duffin
On the Move
Matt Duffin’s encaustic paintings use primarily black and white tones with selected pops of color to bring attention to his irreverent subjects. Employing simplicity within the imagery allows the painstaking qualities of his methodology to shine. Encaustic works are made using wax to which pigment has been added. The wax is heated, applied to a prepared wood surface, and shaped using special brushes and tools. To achieve this level of detail requires exactitude and skill. Considering the rigorous amount of time it takes to complete each piece, it is no surprise that Duffin’s themes tend to explore nostalgia, solitude, and irony.

New artist
Paul Béliveau
Morandi
Paul Béliveau’s Morandi is inspired by the often pastel-toned works of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. While Béliveau has treated book spines as subject matter before, in the Morandi series, the books themselves, rather than the text that decorates their covers, are treated as the aesthetic quality. Outside reference to author, subject, and image is missing. Instead, Béliveau revels in the shape and volume of the books responding and building upon each other as a methodical convergence of color and form.
Gilman Contemporary introduces Brazilian photographer Flávia Junqueira as the latest addition to its roster of artists. Flávia Junqueira’s installations have been marked, since the early years, by the presence of elements that recall childhood: balloons, soap bubbles, pinwheels, merry-go-rounds, people, stunning landscapes, and monumental architectures, culminating in images that are both dreamlike and rigorously constructed. Working mainly in the domain of staged photography, Junqueira creates atmospheres that trigger feelings of playfulness and enchantment.

Nicole Charbonnet
Nicole Charbonnet’s mixed media paintings incorporate texture, images, and words to create visual thresholds revealing visions of pop culture. Addressing cultural memory, Charbonnet conjures images from Westerns and Film Noir. She specifically uses American stereotypes of cowboys, horses, and desert highways as an exploration of past and present perceptions of ourselves. The artist states, “I believe that our language,
whether visual or verbal, doesn’t merely describe identity, but actually produces moral and perhaps even physical identity and is precisely the very possibility of change, the space that can serve as a springboard for thought, the precursory movement of a transformation of social and cultural structures.” This new series of large-scale paintings will be on view through the month of March.

Chris Maynard
This solo exhibition of new work by Chris Maynard will feature his transfixing compositions made entirely of feathers. Maynard is inspired by the regenerative process of molting, explaining that “as birds grow new feathers each year and push out the old, the new ones become exact replicas of form and pattern.” He elaborates upon this natural sequence in his artistic practice, collecting the naturally shed feathers and giving them new life within the narrative scenes of his work. Using surgical tools, Maynard carefully cuts the feathers into positive and negative forms, transfiguring raw material into fine art. Fittingly, these configurations unfold as fable-like origin stories explaining how certain birds came to be, the genesis of their various names, flight patterns, or even eating habits. The artist introduces a wide spectrum of avian creatures, ranging from a city pigeon to the Eurasian jay. Some of Maynard’s works take a playful, humorous tone, while others feel poetic, symbolic, or even parietal.

Bodies of Work: Art & Healing
Through March 23, 2024
Bodies of Work: Art & Healing is a group exhibition featuring artwork by contemporary artists who have used their artistic practice to explore and process their own experience of medical illness and the experiences of others. Through the art of contemporary artists Katherine Shaughnessy, Heather Watkins, Dylan Mortimer, Estelle L. Roberge, Katherine Sherwood, and Renée Stout, Bodies of Work takes viewers on a journey of healing through art.
The arts have long served as a powerful medicine for the mind and body. At the beginning of the 20th century, tuberculosis patients at sanatoria often participated in structured arts and crafts programs. Wounded soldiers recuperating during World War II were taught “lap crafts,” such as beading and embroidery, as part of their medical therapy. And many artists have made their practices an essential part of their personal healing.

Intertwined: Weaving in Community
April 5 through June 15
Intertwined: Weaving in Community considers ways artists have used traditional weaving as social practice and a platform for activism. The exhibition features artwork by Portland-based artist Sara Siestreem (Hanis Coos), Los Angeles-based artist Tanya Aguiñiga, and AMBOS (Art Made Between Opposite Sides), a collective Aguiñiga founded in 2016.
Artist Sara Siestreem (Hanis Coos) has created a self-sustaining weaving program for the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw people. Siestreem is an activist who uses the practice and teaching of traditional Native weaving to preserve Indigenous knowledge while healing communities and the relationship between humans and the environment. The exhibition includes a newly commissioned sculpture made from ceramic, fiber, and a variety of natural and humanmade materials, as well as woven, 3-D printed, and cast ceramic baskets. Also a painter and printmaker, Siestreem makes large-scale works on paper and board covered with patterns, marks, and imagery related to her weaving practice and activism.
Tanya Aguiñiga was born in San Diego, California, and raised in Tijuana, Mexico. Her experiences as a binational citizen who crossed the border daily for school inform her approach to textiles and other forms of craft. Drawing on Mesoamerican and Indigenous Andean weaving traditions, Aguiñiga makes sculptures that are radically contemporary. Often these sculptures reference the human body, including terracotta hands or other body parts, or synthetic hair. She thinks of some of them as portraits—woven figures, sometimes interconnected like networks of family or friends.
Aguiñiga, artist Natalie Godinez, and other members of the collective AMBOS are working with Sun Valley Museum of Art to develop a communitybased fiber artwork in the Wood River Valley. The artwork will emerge from workshops held with community partners in Tijuana, Bellevue, and Hailey and will grow over the exhibition as visitors add to it, incorporating their handwork and stories into the project. The exhibition also includes AMBOS’s Border Quipu/Quipu Fronterizo, an enormous

Jeff Juhlin
Jeff Juhlin has spent a great deal of time studying western landscapes, specifically the Great Basin and high arid desert of the Kaiparowits Plateau in southern Utah. His mixed media works consist of layers of paper, ink, paint, and wax—both cold and encaustic. They are records of time, like the landscapes he has long gone to for inspiration.
“Although I don’t consider myself a landscape painter, I seek to reflect a sense of stillness, vast space, and the visual history of time evident in the Western landscape. My paintings allude to the raw typography, amazing colors, and light where I live. In this environment, time often reveals itself in the form of rock strata created by erosion, wind, and water—both building up and worn away by the elements in a continuous process. Similarly, in my work, I reveal layers of translucent strata composed of pigmented wax, oil, paper, cold wax, and other media that are built up and worn away in the storied layers of the creative process.”

Aurobora Archive
The gallery will also feature a selection of works from the Aurobora fine art studio archive. For 30 years, Aurobora operated an artist-in-residence program in San Francisco and Sun Valley focused on creating monotypes— unique, non-editioned works on paper. Participating artists include Joanne Greenbaum, Ricardo Mazal, Loopmaster M, Clem Crosby, and Lisa Willamson.

Russell Young
Russell Young, born in 1959 in Yorkshire, is a British-American artist best known for his large-scale silkscreen paintings examining cultural icons, the nature of fame, and the souring of the American Dream. His earliest breakthrough was his photography of George Michael for the sleeve of the album Faith in 1987. Young photographed many music stars throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Morrissey, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, REM, The Smiths, Bauhaus, Diana Ross, Paul Newman, Björk, and many others. He went on to shoot over 100 music videos for leading artists during MTV’s height in the 1990s, which brought him to the United States. Young eventually moved to California, where he began his current practice with his sold-out show, Pig Portraits, in Los Angeles in 2003. The many series that have followed, including his ongoing Heroes + Heroines and WEST, demonstrate his visceral, analog processes and signature use of diamond dust. He has exhibited across the world in numerous galleries alongside masterclass artists, institutions, and cultural figures. These include museum exhibitions at the Modern Art Museum Shanghai, Multimedia Art Museum Moscow, Cornell Art Museum, Polk Museum of Art, and the Goss-Michael Foundation. His genesis NFT debuted and sold on Superrare in 2022. Young’s work is
included in many prominent private and institutional collections including those of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Barack Obama, David Bowie, Drake, Angelina Jolie, David Hockney, Kayne West, Brad Pitt, and others, as well as The Getty Collection in Los Angeles and The White House Collection in Washington, D.C. Russell Young’s works have crossed the auction block at all the world’s major auction houses, including Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips.

PIONEER SALOON
Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB
Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.
In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this season include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, vegan and gluten-free sesame noodle bowl, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.
All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.
An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and winter evenings around the large central fireplace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”
Top to bottom: Holiday cheer; mesquite-grilled Idaho ruby red trout; selections from our bar; the Sawtooths in winter, our namesake mountain range.

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA
Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s
Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. SUN VALLEY CULINARY INSTITUTE
Embracing culinary education at the Sun Valley Culinary Institute (SVCI) is, first and foremost, about students launching a career in the culinary arts. Yet SVCI is also dedicated to elevating the culinary arts for the entire Wood River Valley community.
SVCI’s ability to provide a one-year Professional Program with dedicated, highly experienced, and knowledgeable chef instructors allows SVCI students to achieve their potential while earning their way to completing a U.S. Department of Labor Apprenticeship Certificate.
Throughout the year, SVCI offers classes, dinners, and fundraising events to support its mission to educate students, create new career paths, and help sustain the Valley’s restaurant and hospitality community. However, SVCI classes, dinners, and events have a two-fold education purpose. SVCI’s doors are open to the public to advance their culinary arts experience and participate in delicious food and wine events while also supporting the school.
Offering rare cultural experiences through food and food history at SVCI’s downtown Ketchum location, the Wood River Valley community and people from surrounding areas can enjoy worldclass and award-winning chefs who connect us through food education while creating unique and enjoyable experiences.
SVCI constantly adds and updates classes, workshops, and events to its website where you can sign up and discover your culinary arts education and join like-minded folks in the experience.
SVCI is excited to present the second annual Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration, March 13-16, 2024. To learn more about the Sun Valley Culinary Institute’s degree program, classes, and event space, visit sunvalleyculinary.org.
