Birthday Bash Report
by April Johnson For starters, I were several venders that were set up would like to thank such as jewelry, Ronald McDonald Capital City Harley House, Air Brushing, and Welding. I Davidson for inviting us to set up our membership/safety awareness booth at th their 6 annual Birthday Bash. We all had a wonderful time and enjoyed the many events that took place. Thanks to Blade and Bobby for helping with registrations. Capital City Harley Davidson had the poker run, which we were tending the booth and didn’t get to participate in, but I know a few of our ABATE members did. There were some really cool bikes that entered the bike show. If I recall correctly a V-Rod won best of show. There

Wow, what an incredible turnout for the July Chapter meeting! If we had any more people show up, we would have been stacked on top of each other. Which, needless to say, is a good thing. That means there are more riders on the road, and more people willing to stand up for our rights to ride the same stretch of pavement as everyone else. On to matters of the newsletter. It seems as though everyone enjoyed the July edition, and I’ll do my best to make sure the August edition is just as good, if not better. That is my pledge to you. When the newsletter gets boring, it means I’m not doing my job... and that just will not do. So with that said, let me tell you a couple new things I’ve done to the August newsletter. It was discussed, with no arguments, at the Chapter Meeting to incorporate a classifieds (Trading Post) section to the newsletter. You can find the Trading Post on page 10. The ads are free to submit, just email me the ad as you want it listed, and be sure to include your phone number. That’s it. Easy right? Also on page 10 is an advertisement for the ‘Name the Newsletter Challenge’. Since the content of the newsletter is currently getting a facelift, it’s time we gave her a proper name. I am calling on you, the members of the Big Bend Chapter of ABATE of Florida to dig out your creativity and come up with a name for our newsletter. You can submit as many suggestions as you like. We will gather suggestions until the August 17th Chapter Meeting, where we will narrow it down to the top 5 finalists. After the meeting you can email me your vote or use the ballot that will be provided in the September newsletter. I can’t wait to see what you come up with! That’s all for now. Be sure to send in your ‘Name the Newsletter’ suggestions, as well as anything you would like listed in the Trading Post. See you next month! Clay Shaw
Message From The President The chapter and I would like to express our gratitude to Scott Higginbotham, owner of Capital City Harley Davidson and his crew for the hospitality extended toward Abates Big Bend Chapter. Sunday’s General meeting was a good one; we had guests arrive from the H-D Birthday Bash and got a couple more new members. Thank you, to everyone who helped pick up trash along Highway 267 after the meeting. This is our adopted roadway, for those who haven’t seen the sign. I’ll tell you, after picking up trash, you get a whole new respect for the roadway. I get so upset when people throw trash out of their vehicles now. We need volunteers to come out to the Flea Market in Tallahassee on Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th of August to help sell left over yard sale items. If you have items to be donated, bring them Saturday morning. Contact April or Teeah for information &/or location of the flea market. TECH TIP
While we search and request permissions for online Tech Tips, we found a few motorcycle cleaning tips you might find useful. Remember, if you have some handy advice or a not-too-well-kept secret, type it up and send it in. And if we post anything you don’t agree with, let us know! We’re new at this and open to learn all kinds of tips.
Chains Tip: Lube your chain after each ride when the chain is warm so the oil can easily soak in and get into all the tight spots of the chain. WD-40 does a good job cleaning the chain. On oily spots that need cleaning, it cuts the grease. Removing the road grit and fine dirt is the key to longevity of chains and sprockets. Lubricate the chain often with WD-40 or a commercial chain spray every time you fill up for gas (or at the end of each ride). Spray liberally on the side of the chain that comes into contact with the sprockets. Ensure that you spray both left and the right hand side of the chain. Position a piece of newspaper so that you do not dirty the rear wheel rim as you spray. Use a second piece on the floor to catch any drips. Wait five or ten minutes before you wipe all excess oil off the chain. This whole process is a lot easier if your motorbike has a centre stand. Spinning the back tire will ensure that the rest of the chain is lubricated when it comes into contact with the sprocket and pinion. This is a task that is best done when you return home from your ride while the chain is still warm. (Chain cleaning tips compiled from info found on ridemyown.com and totalmotorcycle.com)
That’s all the motorcycle is, a system of concepts worked out in steel.

Birthday Bash
Continued from page 1 Of course all the guys loved getting their scoots washed by the young ladies in bikinis. Mike and I stayed quite busy along with other members, Jerry Allen, Duane Woods, and Cricket explaining to lady’s and gentlemen what ABATE is all about and our cause; Fighting for motorcyclists’ rights and being safe on the highways and bi-ways. We enjoyed showing the safety video and handing out many tri-folds, posters, armbands, bumper stickers, flashlights and key chains and more to folks to spread the word. “WATCH OUT FOR MOTORCYCLES”. I was pleased to acquire 3 new members and hand out several applications along with newsletters and our state Masterlink. Over all it was a very positive event and
I would like to thank everyone who came and helped. We are looking forward to next years Birthday Bash.
