As some of you may already know, I have been given the privilege of redesigning the newsletter. A daunting task, but I’m enjoying the process. First off, I would like to thank the Chapter President Big Mike, and everyone else in the Big Bend Chapter for the opportunity to transform this newsletter into a work of art that will have you anxiously anticipating its release each month. Now, to get the ball rolling; allow me to ask you a question. When you open up a newspaper, what do you see? Do you see only a list of the employees and a few advertisements? No - you see many different articles covering a variety of subjects. Now, I’m not striving to make this newsletter a nationally-known publication, I’m just trying to make it more interesting. As the editor, I play a very small part in this newsletter. You, the reader, are essentially the ones calling the shots. Without you, there would be no Big Bend Chapter, and that includes this newsletter. So, I need your help. Each and every one of you has a story to tell. I am asking you to put those stories onto paper. Tell me about the first time you rode a motorcycle or your solo ride across the country. Anything you want to put in writing can be shared with the entire Chapter. Don’t have a story you wish to tell? Not a problem! You can still help by suggesting ideas for things you would like to see in the newsletter. A jokes page? What about a Trading Post? The more articles and varying ideas we can get into the newsletter, the more interesting it will become. It may take a little time, but with your help we can make this newsletter the envy of all the other ABATE Chapters. Send your comments, suggestions, stories, or anything else you’d like to share, to me at shaw.clay@gmail.com. See you next month, Clay Shaw
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The turn out for the June General meeting was awesome despite the weather, not a bike in the parking lot and still a good showing of members. Kudos to all who made it. It goes to show the level of dedication to the cause from our members. Those who could not make it were surely missed by all. You don’t have to be on a bike to be involved. I know this all to well since the Good LORD decided to unexpectedly bless my wife and I with another child 19 months ago. Now, I don’t get to ride as often as I used to, but I still show up, as did our members on that stormy Sunday afternoon for the June meeting. Unless there is a major hurricane, earthquake, nuclear explosion etc… I or someone else will show up and as long as we have our Board in place, we will hold a meeting.
N t I would ld lik k all ll Next, like tto th thank of the Board Members for their service last year and welcome the new Board for the next. Check your newsletter for the updates to the officers as some have changed. Some positions may be easier than others but nonetheless they all take time and energy away from our normal routines. Please support your officers and assist every chance you get. Don’t forget that
ABATE does what ABATE does for everyone. We give back to the community. Most people don’t even know who we are. In time this will change and ABATE will become a household name. Mark Saturday 19th of July 08 on your calendar for Capital City Harley Davidson’s Annual Birthday Bash, they have graciously allowed us to set up a booth to promote our cause. I would like to see some of our members come out and volunteer to attend the booth even if it is for only one hour or so to give someone else a break. We will be there all day promoting ABATE OF FLORIDA INC BIG BEND CHAPTER and the cause to the community. I thank you in advance. Your brother in the Wind Big Mike
TECH TIP JUMPSTARTING YOUR MOTORCYCLE By Cody “Torres” Sometimes it happens you don’t maintain your battery correctly and it goes dead. You leave it so the parking light stays on so the battery is dead. Or you just haven’t ridden in a while so the battery is dead. No matter what the reason you have to get your motorcycle going. It is possible to jumpstart your motorcycle off your car’s battery. All new models of motorcycles have a 12v system just like a car. The only thing you have to remember is DO NOT HAVE THE VEHICLE RUNNING OR START IT. The cars charging system puts out too much juice and can severely damage your motorcycles electrical system. Just make sure you hook the cables up correctly and don’t let the positive and ground touch; that could cause damage to the battery you’re jumping off of. I have personally seen the aftermath of trying to jumpstart your motorcycle off of a running vehicle. I’ll just remind you there is no flat rate time limit for electrical problems if you need to take it to a mechanic, so it could be a very costly mistake. * © Thunder Roads Magazine. Many thanks to Biker Billy for suggesting to use it in the newsletter. 3
