For Christians worldwide, the Christmas season represents a time of deep reflection and commemoration of the birth of their Savior. However, Childhood memories of Christmas often extend beyond this occasion's solemnity. For many, the anticipation of Santa Claus, the excitement of gifts, and the profound emotional anticipation of December 25 created a unique blend of reverence and youthful joy. This period was marked by a heightened consciousness of behavior, with the promise of gifts for well-behaved children and the symbolic "bag of coal" for those who were not. Yet, as I recall, Santa always delivered—bringing candy canes, toys, games, a sled, cowboy boots, and even the less cherished items like socks and t-shirts, each carrying its unique place in the tapestry of Christmas memories.

In adulthood, these childhood recollections blend with a more profound spiritual understanding of Christmas's true significance: the focus shifts towards the heart and mind, centering on the incarnation of Christ, whose arrival brings the hope of salvation for humankind. Regardless of individual beliefs— or even their absence—Christmas has an enduring capacity to evoke hope, peace, and contentment. These qualities are reminders of resilience and unity, particularly valuable in times marked by challenge and uncertainty. Notwithstanding one’s beliefs, I wish you a Merry Christmas season filled with joy, peace, contentment, and love.

Adobe is honored to host its upcoming January 16, 2025, Community Meeting featuring Martin Toma, a distinguished resident of Gold Canyon. Mr. Toma will deliver an in-depth narrative of his family’s lived experiences under the governments of Iraq and Iran. With profound insight, he will recount life under the rule of Iraq's Saddam Hussein and Iran's Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Martin’s story details his family’s life within these environments, culminating in their eventual journey from Iraq to Iran, England, and then to America and freedom. His presentation will give attendees a rare and impactful perspective – the good, the bad, the ugly - on the strength, sacrifice, and determination required to overcome the challenges in the search for liberty.

We invite you to attend the 3rd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort. We extend our sincerest gratitude to the Gold Canyon Chamber of Commerce, community members, and resort owners, whose dedication brings this cherished event to life on the resort’s beautifully adorned holiday grounds. The celebration will take place on December 11, 2024, commencing at 4:00 p.m., and will be an occasion to come together in unity and celebration of the season.

As we enter the new year of 2025, may we be guided by prayers for peace, unity, and a deepened understanding of one another. May we all walk this path with grace and resilience. Wishing each of you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year filled with joy and contentment.

GOLD CANYON GARDEN CLUB’S SUCCESSFUL PLANT SALE

Our Garden Club’s Plant Sale was a huge success. The summer of 2024 was hard on many cacti, agaves and other plants that normally survive our hot summer days. We were able to provide healthy plants that had been propagated by club members to our community at a reasonable cost. Members look forward to another Plant and Garage Sale in March. Watch for our notice on FaceBook and in SuperstitionLiving Mgazine in early March.

Our Butterfly Garden next to the Dinosaur Park parking lot on Alameda is doing well. The sunlight brings pollinators and is great for growing our plants. A ground cover called Gregg’s blue mistflower is javelina resistant and the blue blossoms bring in butterflies. It’s latin name is Conoclinium coelestinum and it’s native to Arizona. It can also be used in container gardens.

We welcome new members to our club. You may reach us at our email goldcanyongardenclub@gmail.com or find us on FaceBook under Gold Canyon Garden Club. We meet at the Gold Canyon Methodist Church Mission Center the second Tuesday of the month. We gather at 9:30 AM and our meeting begins at 10:00. We meet monthly through April and welcome new members.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

HEALING NATURALLY

Dr. Tina Marcantel, Naturopathic Doctor

480-738-1647 | DrMarcantel.com

6589 S. Kings Ranch Road, Gold Canyon

The body is truly an amazing organism. A consistent flow of divine energy controls our heartbeat, digestion, breathing, and other vital processes without any thought or conscious effort. We call this the autonomic nervous system.

The primary function of the autonomic nervous system is homeostasis: a balance among all the systems that helps the body operate from a place of health and vitality. A basic understanding of how this system works can empower us to promote wellbeing and physical and mental health.

The autonomic nervous system can be divided into two functions: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). These are differentiated by how the body responds to external stimuli— something we often can control. Let’s see why this is important from a health standpoint.

The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for “fight or flight.” It’s a reaction to stress that releases hormones like cortisol and adrenaline that make us breathe faster, our heart rate speed up, and put us into a hypervigilant state that can cause anxiety, worry, and panic. That’s great if we need to escape from a dangerous situation, but if there is a chronic state of stress then our

THE BODY’S INNATE HEALING PROCESS

body is flooded consistently with stress hormones. This can cause inflammation throughout the body leading to painful joints and muscles and a compromised immune system, among other things.

Forms of stress that can stimulate the SNS are:

• poor sleep

• overeating inflammatory foods (e.g., sugar, fast food, refined foods)

• excessive need to be in control of our life or the lives of others

• taking on too many responsibilities with a lack of boundaries

• overexercise causing inflammation/ pain

• lack of exercise that can help release tension

• an attitude of self-victimization without taking action to move forward

• overexposure to stress-inducing situations (e.g., news broadcasts, family drama, worrying about things beyond our control, etc.)

The parasympathetic nervous system, on the other hand, releases the hormone acetylcholine along with various peptides that promote relaxation, a slower heart

rate, relaxed breathing, and improved digestion. It brings balance to hormone production and because there is not a chronic flow of stress hormones and inflammation, the body’s innate intelligence resumes homeostasis and health.

So how can we live more in the PNS rather than the SNS? Here are some suggestions:

• Be aware and mindful of stressors that can affect the body and avoid them when possible.

• Practice good sleep hygiene.

• Take time for yourself—“I am here for me.” Practice relaxation breathing and spend time in nature or doing things that calm and relax you.

• Eat whole nutritious foods.

• Treat yourself to an Epsom salt bath.

• Exercise in moderation in a way that brings you joy.

• Be truthful with yourself and others— set boundaries when necessary.

By making deliberate choices we can feel calm and peaceful, knowing that our parasympathetic nervous system is in control and will allow our bodies to come into balance and healing.

WHAT FILLS YOUR HEART?

Do you ever feel like you’ve forgotten how to be thankful for what you have? That you are always chasing more and more and still you are never happy. Have you forgotten what gratitude even feels like? Have you let unhappiness fill your heart? As this year comes to a close and we look forward to another new year perhaps it is time to consider all the ways to fill your heart. Filling your heart with positive emotions such as joy, gratitude, love, inspiration, kindness, connection, intention, family and friends will promote gratitude.

What is gratitude? The simplest definition of gratitude can be described as the thankful appreciation of what one receives or gives. You can feel grateful and be grateful. Feeling grateful requires you to recognize the positives and their outcome. Being grateful takes everything a step forward by making you want to reciprocate the good that you received.

Routinely practicing gratitude increases dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain, which are key neurotransmitters that give one a feeling of contentment. If we are grateful more often, the happiness-producing neural pathways strengthen, just as exercise strengthens the body. The biggest reward for expressing gratitude is that it can inspire not only us, but the receiver, which starts even more positive and helpful actions towards others. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

When faced with setbacks or hardships, cultivating gratitude helps us reframe our mindset and focus on the positive aspects of our lives. By acknowledging the good, we can find strength and resilience amidst challenging circumstances. This shift in perspective allows us to see obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning.

Why is this important? When one incorporates gratitude into their daily life it can rewire your brain for optimism. Feeling and being grateful can be practiced by simply choosing these simple steps.

• Every day it takes just a few minutes to think about 5 to 10 things you appreciate. You can picture them in your mind or take pictures and sit them at your desk. You could draw a heart and list them inside or write them down in a journal or notepad. Whichever way that allows you to stop and consider what or who fills your heart will then bring the flow of gratitude to you.

• Another valuable gratitude practice is called a "savoring exercise," which builds on aspects of mindfulness. All that's required is pausing, looking around you, and taking in and

enjoying everything that's good in your current setting, noticing these positive and good things allows you to take the next step, which is expressing gratitude for all you have in your life.

• One way to practice gratitude in your relationships is by expressing appreciation to your loved ones regularly. Take a moment each day to acknowledge and thank them for their support, love, or any positive actions they have taken.

• You can also practice gratitude by performing random acts of kindness. Doing something kind for someone else not only brings joy to their life but also enhances your own sense of gratitude. It could be as small as holding the door open for someone or buying a coffee for the person behind you in line. These acts of kindness remind you of the abundance in your life and promote a sense of interconnectedness with others.

• To promote and incorporate gratitude for YOU – create a daily self-care routine. Take a moment each morning to reflect on three things you’re grateful for about yourself. It could be your resilience, your creativity, or your ability to learn and grow. By acknowledging and appreciating your own strengths, you cultivate self-love and a positive self-image.

Not feeling especially grateful today? You have the power to change that. Asking yourself certain questions can evoke gratitude, such as: What happened today that was good? What am I taking for granted that I can be thankful for? Which people in my life am I grateful for? What is the last book I read that I really appreciated, and why? What am I most looking forward to this week, month, and year, and why? What is the kindest thing someone has said or done lately?

There is a saying, that we see the world not as it is, but as we are. We must fill our hearts with kindness, humanity, truth, love, compassion, for these are the positive actions that we all must learn and do to be grateful and to live our best lives. What fills your heart? Share these intentions then practice feeling and being grateful. EVERYDAY

Addressing small issues before listing your property can help you stand out in the market and potentially increase your sales price—without needing to spend much. Here are some small but effective repairs that can help you make a lasting impression on buyers.

1. Fix Leaky Faucets and Plumbing

One of the first things buyers tend to notice during a home tour is how well the property has been maintained. Leaky faucets, slow drains, or minor plumbing issues may seem insignificant, but they can send the wrong message. Potential buyers might assume bigger issues are hanging about beneath the surface. Fixing leaks, replacing wornout washers, or upgrading old fixtures are relatively inexpensive tasks that can instantly make your home feel better cared for and more appealing.

2. Refresh Paint and Touch Up Scuffs

A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to give your home a facelift. Neutral, light colors are particularly effective because they create a clean, modern look that appeals to a wide range of buyers. Even if repainting entire rooms isn’t necessary, touching up scuffs on walls or trim can go a long way in making your home look well-maintained. Small imperfections can distract buyers from seeing the full potential of your home, so don’t underestimate the value of a simple paint touch-up.

3. Repair Doors and Windows

Buyers pay close attention to the functionality of doors and windows during a showing. Squeaky hinges, drafty windows, or broken locks can raise concerns about the overall condition of the home. Ensuring that

SMALL HOME REPAIRS THAT CAN RAISE YOUR SALES PRICE

all doors and windows open and close smoothly is an easy fix that leaves a strong impression. Replacing damaged handles, sealing drafts, or adding weatherstripping to windows can also enhance energy efficiency, which may be an additional selling point for environmentally conscious buyers.

4. Patch Up Cracks and Holes

Over time, it’s common for small cracks or holes to appear in walls and ceilings, whether from settling or from removing furniture or picture frames. These minor blemishes can make a home look older and poorly maintained. Patching up cracks or filling in holes is a simple and inexpensive task, but it can make a world of difference when it comes to presenting a polished, move-in-ready home. Buyers will focus on the overall appeal of the house rather than being distracted by minor imperfections.

5. Update Lighting

Lighting can make or break the ambiance of a home. If your home has outdated or dim lighting fixtures, upgrading to modern ones can give your space a more contemporary feel. Even something as simple as replacing old bulbs with brighter, energy-efficient options can make rooms feel larger and more inviting. Well-lit spaces allow buyers to see the full potential of the home, and brighter rooms tend to photograph better for online listings, attracting more interest.

These small, affordable repairs may not require a huge investment of time or money, but they can significantly impact how buyers perceive your home. By addressing minor plumbing issues, refreshing paint, ensuring doors and windows function smoothly, patching up imperfections, and upgrading lighting, you can create a home that feels more welcoming and well-maintained. In return, you may attract more buyers and maximize your sales price when it’s time to sell.

MATTRUPPERT INFLATION-FIGHTING STRATEGIES FOR RETIREES

At different times, inflation may be high or low, but, except in those rare periods of deflation, it’s always with us. During your working years, when you may receive boosts in your salary, you at least have the potential to keep up with inflation — but what happens when you retire? As a retiree, what can you do to cope with the rising cost of living?

• Keep some growth potential in your investment portfolio. During your retirement years, you may want to move your portfolio toward a somewhat more conservative approach by owning investments that offer significant protection of principal. However, these same investments offer little in the way of growth, which means they are susceptible to inflation. Consequently, you’ll also need to own a reasonable amount in growthoriented investments, such as stocks and stock-based securities. Of course, these investments will fluctuate in value as the financial markets move up and down, but by owning some more conservative investments, you can reduce the overall impact of market volatility on your portfolio.

• Consider inflation-adjusted bonds. You might want to consider Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), which are indexed to the Consumer Price Index, so the principal increases with inflation (and decreases with deflation). Another inflation-adjusted Treasury security is the I bond, which differs from TIPS in that the principal doesn’t change but the interest rate does, every six months, based on a combination of a fixed interest rate and the inflation rate. Like all investments, though, TIPS and I bonds have various features and risks of which you should be aware before investing.

• Delay taking Social Security. You can start collecting Social Security benefits at 62, but your monthly checks will be much bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, likely between 66 and 67. You would receive the maximum amount if you waited until 70 before collecting. Of course, if you need the money to help support your retirement, you may not be able to afford to wait, but if you can, your bigger checks can be a big help against inflation.

• Don’t hold too much cash. During your working years, it’s a good idea to have an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses in liquid, lowrisk accounts. And when you’re retired, you might want to have up to year’s worth of expenses in such a fund. But be careful about holding too much cash, as it will lose purchasing power each year due to inflation. Instead, when keeping cash, seek the “Goldilocks” solution — not too little, not too much, but just the right amount.

• Think about extending your employment. If you like what you do, you might want to consider working a few years longer than you had originally intended. Not only will you be bringing in more income, but you could also continue to contribute to retirement accounts, including your IRA and 401(k). Even if you don’t want to continue working full time, you could do some part-time work or consulting. Any earned income you bring in can help in your fight against inflation.

You can’t control the cost of living, but by making some of the moves described above, you can help yourself mount a defense against the effects of inflation during your retirement years.

Tressa’s House of Music

6021 S. Kings Ranch Road, Ste. 2, Gold Canyon, AZ 85118

Tressa Ericson has done it again. She had a dream, of bringing an intimate dinner theater, and variety shows to Gold Canyon, and when she couldn’t find a place to host her dream, she had to go it alone, by transforming a part of her Salon into a showcase theater, with a stage, dining tables, lighting and chandeliers, and “Tressa’s House of Music,” was born. Tressa proved that a dream can be manifested with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and determination.

Her premiere show debuted 11/3/24, the food was outstanding, (prepared by Chef Todd, of the Gold Stallion Restaurant,) along with a complementary bottle of wine, and the entertainment was WOW!

Tressa is an amazing talent herself she plays the piano and sings. And, it runs in the family, her beautiful talented daughter Brooke Coble also performed, and she has the voice of an Angel. Other vocalists were Kelly Williams, and Valentino Tramutolo, drums Todd Harding, Harmonica and vocalist Lenny Blues, who rocked the house playing and singing the last song of thy evening, “Some Kind of Wonderful”, boy does he have the moves!

I was pleased to attend her inaugural variety show and dinner. The décor felt like you were at a classy intimate private club, the food was delicious, the entertainment was phenomenal. How could anyone ask for more, and it’s all in your own backyard.

You better rush to purchase your tickets, so you won’t be left out. For dates and prices call the Box Office, MondayWednesday, 9AM-3PM, 480-213-0011, to reserve your entertainment experience, $65 per person.

Sunday Night Dinner Shows, Date Night Variety Shows, Italian Nights. Look for a website soon.
