ADOBE is pleased to announce that District 5 County Supervisor Jeff Serdy will be the presenter for the November 21, 2024 ADOBE Community Meeting. Supervisor Serdy, who will soon embark on his second term in office, has been instrumental in addressing multiple issues of importance to Gold Canyon. His notable efforts include successfully reopening State Route 88/ Apache Trail highway, addressing concerns regarding unauthorized camping on state lands, and opposing the proposed 5G cell tower. His opposition to the cell tower has been marked by cogent and well-reasoned arguments presented to his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors. Additionally, ADOBE has greatly benefitted from his involvement in resolving several roadway concerns within the Gold Canyon area.
The meeting will occur at the Gold Canyon Best Western Hotel, commencing with a social gathering at 6:15 PM and ending with the official meeting at 7:00 PM. Supervisor Serdy is eager to articulate his vision for the region’s future over the next four years. He will also address questions and concerns from attendees and is particularly interested in speaking to members and leaders of local Homeowners’ Associations regarding the challenges and opportunities ahead for Gold Canyon.
ADOBE wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to the committee (ADOBE members and others) that opposed the location of the 5G cell tower. Despite the narrow 3-2 vote, the committee’s dedicated
efforts were crucial in preserving the integrity of the Gold Canyon community. The community’s collective voice, even from those who privately opposed the location, underscored the power of local activism. We extend our gratitude to all those who contributed to this important cause.
We also encourage community members to mark their calendars for the January 16, 2025, ADOBE Community Meeting. At this event, a Gold Canyon resident will share their family’s harrowing experiences living under socialist regimes in Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Further details will be provided in the December 2024 Superstition Living issue.
One ADOBE Board member position, most likely treasurer, will open in January 2025. Interested individuals should contact Pam Burks at 480-214-5555 to express their interest. All ADOBE bylaw requirements will be met.
ADOBE extends warm wishes to all citizens for a Blessed Thanksgiving. While our nation faces significant challenges, much remains to be grateful for. We hope that everyone takes the time to enjoy this special occasion with family and friends.
ADOBE strongly encourages community members to exercise their right to vote. Voting is a fundamental freedom enshrined in the Bill of Rights, and active participation in the electoral process is essential for shaping our shared future. As the adage goes, “Use it, or you may lose it.”

protector of children. The goal of this market is to secure funding for a Children’s art program which will be run at our campus in January 2025.
The Christkindlmarkt will also highlight a variety of music presented by Our Savior’s musical director, Richard Wall and friends. ”Save the Date!” and come out to OSLC on 5301 S. Kings Ranch Road in Gold Canyon.

The Players have left the field. Their signs still lay along the roadway.
Were they a betrayal or prediction of the outcome of today?
But as the crowds head home, the Players voices echo in their ears. Promises that brought both accolades and cheers.
So did your team win or lose? Did they hit it out of the park? Or was an unexpected “truth”, just enough of a spark?
Homerun or shutout, yet we shall still remain, “One Nation under God”. We honor the rules of the game.
Will they be held accountable, whether Red or Blue?
We must continue the fight, to make sure that they do!

RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS WAXED AMARYLLIS BULBS
By Rita Vasdasz (subbing for Tom McDonald)
Wow! The Amaryllis in the wax covering blooms at Christmas in Red, White, and Pink colors for all to enjoy, and many bloom more than once in a warm home. The flowers just need little care. The wax covering is like a baby blanket for the bulb, just cut the stems when flowers are finished and wait for the next surprise from the waxed bulb, and they will bloom again after Christmas.
After Christmas, do not throw your waxed bulb away. Cut off the wax covering, and you will find a bulb.
In January plant your bulb in your garden box or in a pottery pot. Gentle sunshine would be best, as they like the shade in the afternoon. Water lightly now that the bulb is in the dirt. Wait Patiently.
In late April expect a surprise. The Amaryllis green leaves start sprouting in the garden and they keep on growing profusely. Soon some new flower stems will start appearing and continue through May. These flowers will be much bigger than the Christmas blooms.
When treated with care the Amaryllis bulbs can last for many years. During my research I read that some last over 20 years and they keep producing flowers for you to enjoy every spring. Little maintenance, but lots of Love!
Timeless and classic living perfectly describes this remarkable 2760 sq ft home. From the moment you arrive you will be captivated by the rugged landscape of the majestic Superstition Mountains that surround you. Call to view this amazing home.

HEALING NATURALLY
Dr. Tina Marcantel, Naturopathic Doctor
480-738-1647 | DrMarcantel.com
6589 S. Kings Ranch Road, Gold Canyon
The term “integrative healthcare” refers to an approach that combines conventional medicine (such as medications and surgeries) with complementary medicine (focusing on root causes, nutritional counseling, hormone balancing, etc.) for the highest good of the patient. In this article, we’ll sit down with Dr. Marcantel for a Q & A on her approach to integrative care as a naturopathic physician.
Q: What’s the difference between conventional and naturopathic medicine?
A: Conventional medicine is what most of us are more familiar with. You go to your family physician or specialist, you’re given a diagnosis, and you’re treated for your symptoms, usually with medications or surgeries. Visits are generally fairly short and treatments may be constrained by coverages provided by health insurance. The emphasis tends to be on short-term treatment of immediate symptoms.
Naturopathic medicine is based on the philosophy that the body has the innate ability to heal itself. While treatment of immediate symptoms is important, the goal is to find and address the root causes of those symptoms so they don’t continue to recur. Doctor visits tend to be longer because the provider takes a holistic approach, meaning that all the parts of an individual can only be connected and treated by looking at the whole person. Because most naturopaths are not part of managed care systems, it means we can use non-conventional testing and treatments to identify and help correct those root causes. Patient education is also a big part of the naturopathic philosophy. Our goal is to empower our patients by teaching them to recognize and understand how their bodies function so they can control their own path to wellness.
Q: Is there a conflict between conventional and naturopathic healthcare philosophies?
For me, not at all. I worked as a registered nurse in the hospital, clinics, and home care for over twenty years before I went to medical school to become a naturopathic doctor. I look at the best of both worlds when it comes to patient treatment. Medications and surgeries are often a necessary part of the healing process. At the same time, overmedication and the failure to address the root causes of many diseases like diabetes, heart disease, obesity, hypothyroidism, and others is a major problem for patients. That’s why communication between doctors is so important. If my patient is seeing a physician—an endocrinologist, a neurologist, an oncologist, for instance— I like to get together and communicate with them to discuss ideas about an integrated plan of care. And, thankfully, more and more physicians are recognizing this and are willing to work with others to promote better patient outcomes.
HOW INTEGRATIVE HEALTHCARE CAN BENEFIT YOU
Q: What should a patient consider when weighing different types of care options?
The first thing is to consider what they truly need. What are their goals for the particular physical ailment or disease or situation? Sometimes a visit to a general practitioner and some short-term medication is all that’s necessary. In the case of a chronic (longterm) problem, they may be more compelled to find and treat the root causes. More and more patients are becoming empowered to take control of their own healthcare and seek out long-term answers. A lot of patients I see will also ask their conventional docs if they are willing to work with alternative practitioners as part of an overall health plan.
Explore your options and look at different physicians’ websites. Know whom you resonate with. There are a lot of great doctors out there, both conventional and naturopathic. An integrative outlook means everybody working together for the good of the individual patient.
LIVE IT WELL SUESCHAFFER OWNER LIVE IT WELL PLACE
CHOOSE WELLNESS FOR A BETTER YOU
The words Health and Wellness are most often used interchangeably, however there are key differences between them. Defining and understanding the difference between health and wellness will provide better clarity on your goals, create a plan that makes sense for you, and allow you to choose and build the quality of life you want which will be sustainable for a lifetime.
Health: Health begins with the physical body and can be further defined by how well it functions—or not. Your health involves how you move your body (exercise), the way you eat (your nutrition), and the absence of acute or chronic diseases. It is important to find a movement practice that you really love and do as often as you can. Nutrition and sleep are also key aspects of physical health that affect mental wellness. Mindfulness and mental exercise help you to decrease depression and anxiety while increasing our mind’s ability to function well. Feeling good allows one to be more spiritually connected to the world around them and to ourselves. Being in touch with our health may lead to early detection of diseases. Health is a definite and vital component of wellness and is an excellent place to start on your path to wellness.
Wellness: The definition of wellness is an active concept that describes living a healthy lifestyle and achieving your full potential. It is the intention and attention for all the areas of your life, including health, fitness, mindfulness, mental health, and social well-being. Wellness is also the presence of satisfaction, joy, and purpose. Recognizing the importance of wellness, reflecting on what your wellness encompasses, and tending to your wellness are all-powerful preventative methods to improve your mental health
and overall well-being. Together, health and wellness can help you achieve a high quality of well-being. Focusing on wellness specifically can help you to also achieve good health for a lifetime.
If health and well-being is your goal, engaging in self-care and a wellness lifestyle while daily making simple and healthy choices is your best bet for getting there. Focusing on just one area of your life at a time can create meaningful longlasting changes that will continue to improve your life.
• Prioritizing one’s physical and mental health
• Adopting healthy lifestyle habits that can be maintained long-term
• Eating a healthy diet
• Finding exercise activities that you enjoy and regularly participating in them
• Getting an adequate amount of goodquality sleep
• Following treatment plans for existing conditions or discovering prevention plans
Simply put, there are three straightforward ways to promote health and wellness. Move Well, Be Well and Live Well. Choose to start your journey to wellness by first bringing your attention to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your life. It is with consistent evaluation and awareness that the prevention or control of disease will promote and preserve one’s overall wellbeing.
Move Well - Movement is the first key step in becoming healthy and is an important part of today’s daily life. Movement will combat stress, build strength, tone the body, improve balance, quiet the mind, and recharge our souls. Group classes or private sessions can be a
focal point for those looking to incorporate healthy movement into their daily life. Seek out Fitness, Yoga or Pilates instructors that combine inspiration, creativity and knowledge for a comprehensive experience.
Be Well – Look for and schedule time with professionals that believe wellness should be at the center of your life. The benefits of therapeutic massage or an individualized assisted stretch session are both self-care practices that can help to manage health conditions, reduce stress, create a greater sense of belonging, overall well-being and improve your quality of life. Seek out natural or conventional professionals who can manage chronic conditions, create a plan for disease prevention and implement good healthy life practices.
Live Well – Every day we need to practice taking care of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our lives to promote health and wellness. Create a lifestyle that enables you to set aside time for your health to ensure your overall well-being now and for years to come.
Wellness is a broad spectrum that includes all aspects of being alive. By creating “health” in every aspect of wellness, you will find yourself improving your life, your body, and your well-being. You will find a new dimension of health and wellness that you might have never thought possible before. Both the state of our health and attention to over-all wellness is vital to living our best life. And knowing this, you have the power to choose both health and wellness - and change your life for the better!

Our ceremony has always been an honorable recognition to all those who have served and sacrificed. Here is a little peak as to what part of the ceremony will have in it this year:
Our speaker will be Arizona Adjutant General Kerry Muehlenbeck. She is in charge of the Dept of Emergency & Military affairs. Major General Muehlenbeck received her commission in April 2021.
The Arizona Hugh O’Conner Memorial Pipe band will be also be coming this year. The Hugh O’Conor Memorial Pipe Band was formed by Neil Flint in 2006. Neil brought together a talented group of pipers and drummers to honor Hugh O’Conor, an exiled Irishman who founded the Spanish presidio from which Tucson, Arizona would eventually grow. Pipe Major Leonard Wood of Phoenix, Arizona, has taken the reins and has reached out to pipers and drummers from across Arizona and the United States to reform the band. This band consists of musicians who are firefighters to small business owners!
Please spread the word to your family and friends about this honorable event!
If anyone who wishes to volunteer, we are requesting that they register at nfass@hotmail.com; This year, Bashas and Texas Roadhouse will be donating their time and food to all volunteers.

FINANCIAL FOCUS®
MATTRUPPERT
In the popular imagination, receiving an inheritance always sounds like a good thing — after all, who doesn’t want a financial windfall? And inheritances can certainly be lifealtering events. But they can cause challenges, so you’ll want to help your heirs be prepared.
To assist in this preparation, try to address some key questions affecting your heirs:
• Do they know what’s in your estate plans? Your family and other heirs will be much better prepared to deal with an inheritance if they know what to expect. That’s why it’s so important that you share your estate plans with everyone involved. You need to let them know the wishes and decisions you’ve expressed in your will and other legal arrangements, such as a living trust. Of course, sharing this information doesn’t necessarily mean that all your heirs will be completely satisfied with your choices — but at least they won’t be surprised, and perhaps will be less likely to cause disputes when the time comes to settle your estate.
• Will they know what to do with the money or other assets? You may be planning to leave your grown children a sizable amount of assets, possibly including cash, stocks, real estate, IRAs, 401Ks or other types of valuable personal property. But this inheritance brings with it several possible questions: Do your heirs already have an investment platform ready to accept inherited stocks? If you do leave behind rental property or a vacation home, can it be easily sold? These types of issues are generally not hard to resolve, but the more prepared your heirs are for their inheritance, the quicker they can take whatever actions are needed.
ARE YOUR HEIRS READY TO RECEIVE AN INHERITANCE?
• Are they prepared to handle any taxes that may result from the inheritance? Unless you have a very large estate, your heirs likely won’t face federal estate taxes. (In 2024, the first $13.61 million of an estate is exempt from federal estate taxes.) However, other types of taxes may apply. A few states assess state inheritance taxes, and your heirs could incur federal and/or state income taxes when they withdraw money from inherited assets funded with pretax dollars, such as some retirement accounts. They could also face capital gains taxes when they sell inherited assets, such as stocks, for more than they were worth at the time of the inheritance. In any case, inheritance-related taxes can be complex, so you and your family and other heirs should discuss these issues with your tax advisor.
• Will they be liable for any outstanding expenses? If you have developed a comprehensive estate plan, it's unlikely your heirs will be on the hook for any outstanding expenses, such as credit card balances or funeral costs. If you do still carry a mortgage, though, and you are planning on leaving your house to your heirs, they may want to be prepared to act quickly to sell it.
When leaving an inheritance, there’s a lot involved — emotionally, financially and legally. So, do whatever you can to make the entire process as easy as possible for your loved ones. By communicating your wishes regarding the inheritance, and by considering all the issues that may arise, you can go a long way toward achieving the outcomes you desire.
HOA Summit Focuses on FIRE PREVENTION, ROADWAYS, AND AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL
By Betty Bowes
Gold Canyon Community, Inc. (GCCI) recently hosted its second HOA meeting of the year at its Gold Canyon Community Center. GCCI Vice President Terri King welcomed a full house of attendees representing 90 percent of community neighborhoods. Also attending were County Supervisor Jeff Serdy, Fire Chief John Whitney, special guest speakers, and Pinal County officials.
Alan Sinclair, Director of Siphon Draw Fire & Fuels/Siphon Draw Environmental Services and an area expert in fire management, gave an extensive review of issues creating a larger threat of desert wildfires: the main culprit being invasive plant species that have turned the desert into a grassland requiring continuous and progressive thinking to deal with solutions.
Fire Chief John Whitney and Captain Zach Leon of Superstition Medical and Fire District, explained the Firewise USA program and steps involved to being designated a Firewise neighborhood. They stressed the need for residents to remove combustible matter from around homes, clean gutters and roofs, and manage vegetation. The AZ Department of Forestry and Fire Management is happy to work with interested individuals to create a Firewise neighborhood.
County Supervisor Jeff Serdy gave several updates to current issues of interest, including: ditches along Peralta Trail to discourage illegal camping and RV parking; the Maverik Station delay awaiting ADOT approval of a dual lefthand lane on US 60; the proposed Air Force Flight Pattern-Training changes threatening to cause invasive noise pollution over the Superstitions (residents urged to contact their U.S senators and representatives); the critical need to pass Prop 486 reinstating the ½ cent sales tax for Pinal roadway maintenance; and two pending future proposals -- the extension of HWY 24 to Peralta, diverting Renaissance Festival traffic away from Gold Canyon, and the new N/S 505 outer freeway connecting I-10 to Eloy.

IN THE KITCHEN WITH MARSHA
MARSHADORRIS
MAPLE BROWN SUGAR COOKIES
These maple cookies have crisp edges and a nice chewy center with a drizzle of maple icing!
INGREDIENTS:
2 1/3 cups All-Purpose Flour
1 tsp Baking Soda
½ tsp Salt
½ cup Unsalted Butter, softened to room temperature
1 cup Packed Dark Brown Sugar
1 large Egg, at room temperature
1/3 cup Pure Maple Syrup*
1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
1 tsp Maple Extract**
1 cup Chopped Pecans
MAPLE ICING:
2 Tbsp Butter
1/3 c Pure Maple Syrup
1/8 tsp Maple Extract
1 c Sifted Confectioner’s Sugar
DIRECTIONS:
Whisk the flour, baking soda and salt together in a small bowl. Set aside. Using a hand or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and brown sugar together on medium speed until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. Add the egg and beat on high until combined. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. Add the pure maple syrup, vanilla extract, and maple extract, then beat on high speed until combined.
Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, then mix on low until combined. Add the chopped pecans, then beat on low until combined. Dough will be creamy and soft. Cover and chill the dough 2 hours in the refrigerator (and up to 3 days). If chilling for longer than a couple hours, allow to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before rolling and baking. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.
With a medium size cookie scoop (about 1.5 tablespoons of dough) roll dough into balls and place on prepared sheets. Bake for 12-13 minutes until lightly browned on the sides. The centers will look very soft. Remove from oven. If they are puffy, lightly bang the pan on the counter to slightly deflate the cookies to create the cracks. Cool cookies on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Make the Icing: In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter, maple syrup and maple extract together, whisking occasionally. Once the butter has melted remove from heat and whisk in the sifted confectioners’ sugar until smooth. Drizzle over cooled cookies. Let icing set. Cookies stay fresh at room temperature in an air tight container for up to 1 week!
*Pure Maple Syrup: Avoid “breakfast” syrup which does not have the same robust maple flavor that pure syrup contains.
**Maple Extract: Pure maple syrup is not enough to guarantee mega maple flavor. Without the maple extract, the cookies are lacking. I used McCormick maple extract.
You can freeze unbaked cookie dough balls for up to 3 months. Bake the frozen balls for an extra minute, no need to thaw!
Recipe courtesy of Sally’s Baking Addiction (with a couple tweaks by me)!
This is a tasty, hearty and easy soup to make!!
INGREDIENTS:
¾ lb ground beef
4 Tbsp butter, divided
¾ c chopped onion
¾ c shredded carrots
¾ c diced celery
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp dried parsley flakes
4 c cubed peeled potatoes
3 c beef broth
¼ c all-purpose flour
12 to 16 oz. Velveeta cheese, cubed
1 ½ c whole milk
Salt & Pepper to taste
¼ c sour cream
Optional: Chopped green onion & cooked crumbled bacon
DIRECTIONS:
In a large stock pot over medium heat, cook and crumble beef until no longer pink; drain and remove from pan. In same pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Saute onion, carrots, celery, basil and parsley until vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes. Add potatoes, broth and ground beef; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered until potatoes are tender, about 10-12 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a small skillet, melt remaining 3 tablespoons of butter. Add flour; cook and stir until bubbly, 3-5 minutes. Add to soup; bring to a boil. Cook and stir 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Stir in cheese, milk, salt and pepper; cook until cheese melts. Remove from heat and blend in sour cream. To serve, ladle into bowls and garnish with chopped green onions and cooked crumbled bacon, if desired. ENYOY!
Store leftover cheeseburger soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat soup in a saucepan over gentle heat. This is not a soup you can freeze. Dairy can separate in the freezer. It will become gritty and grainy when thawed.
Recipe compliments of Taste of Home.
