ADOBE hopes the P&Z Commission has tabled the 5G Tower issue. Recent research has disclosed an alarming matter if approved and forwarded to the Pinal County Supervisors. Pinal County officials are not considering any perspectives on the tower that relate to health issues— although health issues are legion—but rather only the destruction of Gold Canyon aesthetics and the fact that the tower will block citizen views of the breathtaking Gold Canyon scenery, a view that is a part of our community’s identity.
Notwithstanding the county’s position, it is important to note that the proposed tower will be a few feet from Bashas’ Shopping Center. The Center’s main exterior structure is cement block, which, according to EMF experts, is a poor radiation blocker (blocks about 50% of the radiation). Ergo, the tower’s proximity to the Center would bombard 5G EMFs through the bodies of all the thousands of citizens and pets visiting the businesses in the Center 24/7.
The county only notifies residents within 300 feet of the tower about the possible tower danger, while the World Health Organization (WHO) states that the major danger via the BioInitiative Report is a distance of 1,640 feet, and the Environmental Working Group (EWG) states the significant danger is 3,280 from the tower.
Experts in the field recognize that the dangers of EMF radiation from outside the home environment (cell phones, WIFI, microwave) are extremely dangerous to humans and animals. A study conducted in Germany in 1998 showed that cows exposed to EMF radiation had a significant reduction in milk, while a human study (Kempten West Study) in 2007 indicated that substantial unfavorable conditions of serotonin and melatonin (hormones that affect brain messaging, mood, sleep, and the immune system) were reported. The NailaStudy.pdf (from 1994-2004 with 1000 patients), after five years of study, had already found that people residing within 1312 feet of the tower had trebled the risk of getting prostate, pancreas, bowel, skin, lung, and blood cancer, with breast cancer topping the list.
There are other options than placing this 5G EMF-generating radiation monster in downtown Gold Canyon, such as across the street south of Route 60 somewhere (far enough away) on State land. If this issue goes before the Pinal County Supervisors for a vote, please inform Supervisor Jeff Serdy (jeff.serdy@pinal.gov) of your position on this topic. Be sure to include your name and address and that - if this is your position - you are mostly concerned about the danger to the aesthetics the tower will bring to Gold Canyon and that the tower will block your views of beautiful Gold Canyon scenery a beauty that is inherent in Gold Canyon’s identity. Better yet, come to the supervisor meeting and present your position in person.

SONORAN DESERT LANDSCAPES
FROGGY WENT A COURTIN’
This is a story of unrequited love in one of our large landscapes.
Back in May, I had the opportunity to travel by horseback to do some volunteer work at Toney Ranch (the Toney), located in the far east portion of the Tonto National Forest. The Toney is owned by the Superstition Area Land Trust (SALT), and the property is surrounded by either the National Forest or the Superstition Wilderness and is accessible only by horseback or foot. The Toney and how SALT came to acquire it are fascinating stories for another day. Right now, the topic is unrequited amphibian love.
This was to be a working trip, and I was accompanied by Jack Carlson, co-author
of Superstition Wilderness Trails East, Anja Schoenberger, Sally and Richard Gates, our packers, and their horses Riva, Oakley, Misty and Hanna. The cabin, built in 1914 by William Toney and his family, is in danger of falling in on itself. Visitors to the cabin had left over 150 pounds of trash to be collected and packed out. There was trail work to be done, a spring to be cleaned and repaired, and many, many photos to be taken to document our efforts and to plan future projects to save this beautiful and historic site for future generations.
I had invited my long-time friend Anja to take part in the fun, and after each day’s work was done, we would go to
the nearby Haunted Canyon creek with snacks and drinks to cool our tired feet in its 58-degree water while solving the world’s problems.
On the first evening, we discovered a light-colored frog. The second evening, we were serenaded by other frogs (darker skin, possibly the Canyon tree frog (Hyla arenicolor). That night, our recording attempts failed. On our third and last night, we successfully recorded one frog singing its courtship song. When we played back the recording, the real frog called back! We were flabbergasted. We played, and he responded again and again. We even recorded our call and his reply. We laughed and giggled like a couple of kids. Did this frog think he had found his soulmate, someone who sounded just like him?
It was about this time that we started feeling guilty. Were we leading this lonely frog on, only to leave him in the lurch? After all, there were not that many frogs in this creek, which would soon be reduced to a few stagnant pools by the summer’s heat and drought. It was urgent business for him to find a mate, and we wondered if he was wasting precious energy replying to our iPhone fakes. Were we solving the problems of the world or adding to them, one lonely frog at a time?
For more information on Toney Ranch, visit the SALT web site at https:// www.azsalt.org. Or pick up a copy of Jack’s Superstition Wilderness Trails East, contact him at jackcarlsonccp@ gmail.com, or contact me at tom@ smilingdoglandscapes.com.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also called PCOS, is a hormonal disorder that involves multiple organ systems within the body. This condition can affect females of all ages and encompasses a group of signs and symptoms that may include some but not necessarily all of the following:
*Irregular periods (menses) or no menstrual bleeding. This may include infrequent menses cycles occurring at 2, 3, or even 6-month intervals. The flow and length of periods may vary. These infrequent menstrual cycles or the absence of periods may lead to infertility from the lack of ovulation.
*Increased hair growth on the back, chest, or face. Patients may also experience male-pattern baldness or thinning hair, acne, or oily skin as a result of elevated testosterone levels.
*Weight gain and obesity can result from elevated insulin levels due to insulin resistance; untreated, this may lead to type 2 diabetes.
*Elevated cholesterol and hypertension may result from the resultant weight gain
*Many (poly) cysts, or fluid-filled sacs, may be present in the ovaries.
The cause of PCOS in not definitely known, but it is believed to be linked to cellular insensitivity to the hormone insulin The production of too much insulin can cause an imbalance in female hormone production leading to irregular menstrual cycles and infertility. There may be a genetic component in PCOS, and a good medical history should include a discussion about family members (particularly mother or sisters) who were diagnosed with the syndrome.
TESTING
Testing for a diagnosis of PCOS may include several methods:
*A thorough physical examination that includes measurement of the abdominal girth, weight, and an assessment of unusual hair growth on the face, arms, or back.
*A medical history interview to gather details about symptomology and whether a family history of PCOS may be indicated
*Blood tests to measure fasting insulin and glucose levels.
*Salivary hormone tests to measure testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and progesterone-to-estrogen ratio levels
* An ultrasound of the ovaries to rule out the presence of cysts on the ovaries.
PCOS: A COMMON CAUSE OF INFERTILITY
TREATMENT
While there is no “cure” for PCOS, it can and should be successfully managed. A naturopathic approach to treatment can be very effective in helping women with PCOS lead healthy, virtually symptom-free lives.
* Support healthy hormonal balances. Elevated testosterone levels can be converted to estrogen in women. This may lead to an imbalance in progesterone/estrogen ratios and cause estrogen dominance, leading to signs and symptoms of PCOS. Specific botanicals and food supplements can be used to target and normalize hormone levels and support healthy ovulation.
*A healthy diet that includes high-fiber foods such as flaxseed is important. Liver support supplements are also helpful in decreasing high levels of testosterone in the body.
*Support healthy glucose levels. A professionally guided weight loss program will decrease both weight and insulin levels. This can help prevent the long-term effects of PCOS such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes.
*A proper exercise regimen is also important. Research shows that a consistent exercise routine can be as effective as the medication metformin that is commonly used in PCOS to reduce insulin resistance
If you or your doctor suspects Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, you should be properly screened for a diagnosis. Effective treatment and management of PCOS can mean not only a better quality of life now, but also avoiding other serious health problems in the future.

LIFE’S FRAMEWORK FOR FRIENDS, FUN & FITNESS
Do you ever wonder how to prioritize and optimize your life? Is there a secret to figuring out your life focus? Some people seem to do a good job of figuring out who they are, what they care about, and can design their lives around that. Some people learn too little, too late, what really matters to them. Others never seem to learn. What if it is possible to use a simple framework system to help you figure out what really matters?
Framework is defined as a basic structure, plan, or system, of concepts, values, customs, or rules. Creating a framework can help you decide what you need to optimize or focus on. This can be a simple way to put your life in perspective and reestablish your path. Our framework list includes:
You will have a very clear view of how to prioritize and what to optimize if some of these Fs are also your core values. Core values are the guiding principles that define your identity and your choices. They help you determine which people, things, goals, and decisions align with your true self. At the deepest level, knowing your core values prevents you from betraying yourself in pursuit of temporary or futile distractions. Values give you a firm footing in your beliefs and a solid internal compass to gauge your decision-making. When things feel off, it could be you are out of alignment with one or more of the “F”s that are important for you.
Just by having a simple framework for looking at life categories will give you a big advantage in designing your life, more consciously, while keeping important areas of your life in mind. It is not surprising that the secret of a more fulfilling and happier life is to spend more time in alignment with your core values.
Take a moment to check your framework to determine if you are on track by scoring this F list. Maybe you have forgotten how to have fun or spend quality time with your friends or family. Maybe, just for this month you can focus on Friends, Fun & Fitness as three core values that are easily interrelated and essential.
The benefits of working out with a friend are undeniable. From heightened motivation and increased commitment to enhanced enjoyment and emotional support, the advantages extend to both physical and mental well-being. Sharing your fitness journey with a friend amplifies the positive aspects of exercise, making it an enjoyable and sustainable part of your life. Spending time with someone who understands your struggles will also foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual support. Your friends will become the reliable ally who boosts your confidence, lifts your spirits, and helps you overcome obstacles. The bond forged through shared challenges and victories creates a support system that extends beyond exercising together.
Ready to try it? Reach out to a friend or family member to go with you or consider joining a group fitness class for the opportunity to meet new friends and experience firsthand the transformative power of making the core values of Fun, Friends and Fitness a priority. Need more motivation? Every Saturday in July at 9 am at the Live it Well Place in Gold Canyon the ‘Joyful Fitness’ group class for everyone is FREE.

Whether you’re a pitcher, a catcher, a hitter, a runner, an outfield player or just a grandstand sunner… …It’s all just a game!
You hit or you miss, you’re in or you’re out. The rules make it fair so there should be no doubt. …but isn’t it all just a game?
No matter your aim to left field or right, the players just hope for a hit out of sight. …and that’s the game.
They scurry for the Base. They run to get in. But at the end of the day, will the best team win? …just a game?
So with the playoffs near, choose your team with care. Wave that banner high but only if you dare. …You do know it’s just a game. …but is it? Now watch the screen as the runs come in. Will you cheer or scowl? Will they lose or will they win?
It’s all up to you, so raise your voice to be heard. And when the game is over maybe you’ll get the last word! …HOMERUN!!!

TALK TO YOUR FAMILY ABOUT WEALTH TRANSFER
Are you anticipating an inheritance someday? If so, you may want to discuss it with your parents or other family members who may be leaving you the assets — because early, open communication will benefit everyone involved.
However, many people are reluctant to have these conversations. More than a third of Americans do not plan on discussing a transfer of wealth with their families, according to a recent study by Edward Jones in partnership with NEXT 360 Partners and Morning Consult. And the same study found that only about a quarter of Americans have actually discussed generational wealth transfer with their families.
Perhaps this low level of communication is not surprising — clearly, talking about wealth transfer and estate plans can be emotional. But having these discussions is important, for several reasons:
We Understand Commitment
At
Matthew
Matthew Fliss, CFP®
• Strengthening family bonds – Generational wealth transfer shouldn’t be seen simply as a transactional event. By discussing your parents’ plans and wishes, and your own expectations, you can build a sense of unity and shared purpose. And you can develop a common philosophy about how your family’s legacy goals will be carried forward through the succeeding generations.
• Avoiding unpleasant surprises – If you or other family members are expecting a certain inheritance and things turn out differently, disappointment and bad feelings may occur. But this can be avoided by having a discussion beforehand that clearly outlines your parents’ intentions. You still may not agree with them, but at least you’ll know what to expect — and you won’t make the mistake of acting in advance on any assumptions about what you’ll inherit.
• Developing appropriate strategies – Passing on wealth to a new generation as part of an overall estate plan can be more complex than you might think. Are your parents using tax-smart strategies? Would they benefit from establishing a living trust? Are the beneficiary designations on their retirement accounts and life insurance policies accurate and up to date? If you suspect your parents may not have properly addressed these issues, you may want to bring up the benefits of working with an estateplanning attorney and a tax advisor.
• Protecting against incapacitation – Many people go through their senior years with few, if any, physical or mental impairments. But there are no guarantees. If one or both of your parents were to become incapacitated and unable to handle their financial affairs, it could cause serious problems with their wealth transfer and estate-planning goals. But if you can discuss your parents’ plans with them while they are healthy and alert, you can encourage them to take the proper steps, such as reviewing outdated estate-planning documents and designating you or another family member as power of attorney to make health care and financial decisions on their behalf should they become incapacitated.
While the benefits of having wealth-transfer and estateplanning discussions are clear, starting the conversations can be tricky. You need to show that you want to initiate these talks because you’re concerned that proper plans need to be in place and understood by everyone involved. If you have a good relationship with your parents, you should be able to start these conversations, but you’ll still need to be sensitive when bringing up the subject.
One final word: Estate plans can take some time to develop — so, the sooner you have these discussions, the better.
AJ MOUNTED RANGERS WELCOME NEWLY ELECTED OFFICERS
Congratulations to the newly elected AJ Mounted Rangers for the 20242026 term. The AJ Mounted Rangers are a group of volunteer peacekeepers who are committed to bringing joy to children and serving the community. Each officer has a specific role outlined in the organization’s by-laws.
While we are located in the stunning Superstition Mountains in Apache Junction, our volunteers come from surrounding areas as well. Our mission is to donate the funds raised to various organizations that support youthrelated activities. The organization has been active since 1995.
The summer is a quieter time for the organization, but activities pick up again in September and continue almost nonstop until Memorial Day. Even during the summer, we continue to recruit AJ Mounted volunteers year-
round. This year, we will be present at the Fourth of July fireworks in Apache Junction for the first time, and we hope you can join us at the fun event at Desert Shadows Park that evening.
Our meetings will commence on September 13, which happens to be a Friday, at the Multigenerational Center in Apache Junction at 7 p.m. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please visit our website which is filled with information and photos at www.ajmountedrangers.org.

CHICKEN GYRO SALAD WITH TZATZIKI SAUCE
If you like Gyros this is a deconstructed version using chicken and other healthy ingredients!
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 Tbls olive oil
• 1 to 1.25 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into bite-sized pieces
• 2 to 3 tsp dried oregano
• 1 tsp Kosher salt or to taste
• 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper or to taste
• 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
• 1 Tbsp lemon juice
SALAD
• 6 cups lettuce Romaine or Iceberg
• 1 cup tomatoes diced or halved or cherry/grape tomatoes
• 1 cup English cucumber diced small
• 1 cup diced or crumbled feta cheese
• ½ cup red onions diced small
• 1 cup crushed pita chips (optional)
TZATZIKI SAUCE
• 8 oz plain Greek yogurt (must be Greek yogurt, I used 0% fat)
• About ½ an English cucumber finely grated (about 2/3 to ¾ cup grated cucumber, use coarsest blade of a box grater)
• 1 clove garlic finely minced or pressed
• 1 Tbsp lemon juice
or
• 1 Tbsp white wine vinegar
• 2 tsp dried dill weed
• ¾ tsp Kosher salt or to taste
• ¾ tsp freshly ground black pepper or to taste
• Pinch sugar – optional
INSTRUCTIONS
CHICKEN—To a large skillet, add the oil, chicken, evenly sprinkle with oregano, salt, pepper and cook over medium high heat for about 5 minutes, flipping intermittently so all sides cook evenly. When chicken is about 90% cooked through, reduce the heat to medium-low, add the red wine vinegar, lemon juice (may bubble up) and allow chicken to simmer another 1 to 2 minutes, or until done. Cooking time will vary based on thickness of chicken breasts and sizes of pieces; set pan aside off the heat while you assemble the salad.
SALAD—To a large bowl, add the lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, pita chips (optional) onions, chicken and any cooking juices (loaded with flavor) from the pan; set aside.
TZATZIKE SAUCE—To a medium bowl, add all ingredients, whisk to combine, taste, and check for flavor balance. Add additional salt, pepper, lemon juice, pinch sugar, etc., if necessary, to taste. Evenly drizzle sauce over the salad, to taste. Salad is best fresh.
NOTES: *If you want a thicker tzatziki sauce, you may want to wring out the grated cucumber in a clean kitchen towel. Extra sauce will keep airtight in the fridge for up to 3 days, noting it may thin out as time passes and cucumbers release their juices.
*I chose to squeeze the grated cucumbers before adding to the sauce. Compliments of AverieCooks.com
Yes, it would be simpler to just send a text. After all, you probably have your phone within reach. A text would also be cheaper- no postage required… Don’t text it.
Write the note.
My entire life, I have written letters and notes to friends, family, and even to acquaintances. I write notes to thank, to send best wishes, to get well, to congratulate, and to just say “hello, I’m thinking about you!” My letter writing was rekindled when I came across a booklet once owned by my grandmother, tucked in the back of my living room cabinet. It’s Fun to Write Letters! was a pamphlet created by Eaton’s Fine Letter Papers, a stationery company founded in 1893, to drum up their paper sales by encouraging and essentially, demonstrating to their customers how easy it is to write letters. How useful and how inspiring! This particular booklet is a revised edition from 1960 and incredibly, the wisdom holds true today.
A handwritten note is rare these days and therefore, much more impactful. A handwritten note shows that you care. You took the time to sit down, to write, to seal it in an envelope, to stamp, and to walk it to your mailbox. A handwritten note is intimate. A handwritten note is love.
In today’s world, we are inundated with social media and it is easy and instant to communicate. However, this can also be very impersonal and cannot replace the feelings we get when we receive a card or letter in the mail from a real friend, not a “Facebook friend”. A handwritten letter is personal. It carries thought and warmth. Handwritten correspondence brings immeasurable joy and connects us to people in a way that social media cannot.
So, you say it has been a while since you’ve written to someone?
Not sure how to begin?
According to It’s Fun to Write Letters!, “Picture in your mind, the person to whom you are writing and write as you would talk”. Write as if you were actually speaking to that person. Say “Hello”. Maybe thank them for doing you that favor. Be natural. Be informal. Put your personality into your letters. Be generous with your punctuation!!! Underline for emphasis. Animate with exclamation marks and smiley faces! For you Seinfeld fans out there, apply the “yada, yada, yada” or a simple “…”. Those alone can often say or imply even more than words can! Don’t worry about proper etiquette. Don’t worry about grammar. Be yourself.
A handwritten note is meaningful. Send someone some love through the mail today. You got this! I promise, you will make someone’s day!
P.S. No one saves a text.
