EDITORIAL Who's there? Curiosity is the password, the access key to this issue. Curiosity is an instinct, an emotional aspect that involves exploration, investigation and learning and whose aim is to satisfy the impulse to draw information to interact with the environment. A natural instinct that leads to the discovery of new information, the fuel of science and the disciplines of the study of the human being. This issue of July is dedicated to curiosity, as desire for knowledge. We wanted to peek, glance at the facts of the shipyards and engineering and architecture studios, trying to tell non-ordinary stories. You will find some shots from New York, where an Azimut was moored in Times Square during the design week. We went through some iconic places in Milan to photograph nautical accessories. We had the opportunity to be special guests of Perini Navi at the St Barths Buckett Regatta and to delve into the world of Feadship to explore how they have managed to rule the Seven Seas for almost two centuries.
There is no lack of visits and interviews with the protagonists of the sector and stories behind important projects, such as Artefact by Nobiskrug and Spectre by Benetti. We visited the new Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona and met its Chief Commercial Officer Stefano De Vivo. We made an imaginary tour of the world - for now together with Baglietto and Santa Maria Magnolfi, the studio behind the new concept of explorer. Finally, the exploratory adventure led us to discover the new Extra Yachts models of Palumbo Superyachts. Our curiosity drove us to a postcard landscape, such as the new colorful resort designed by Navalhead and inspired to the wonderful island of Burano, as well as to an enchanted garden like the one designed by Luxury Living for their new outdoor collection. Our curiosity was definitely satisfied, and yours?
See you at the September boat shows! Good summer to everyone!

ON COVER
Michael Moebius shows a huge talent when it comes to turning pop art and popular culture on its head. Today, Moebius has become one of the most recognised and indemand contemporary artists in the world. His now famous bubble gum portraits have become a favourite among interior designers and investors the world over, thanks to their striking symbolism.
FORBIDDEN INSPIRATIONS. THE WORLD IS UNVEILED THROUGH AN ART BUBBLE.
Unlike his gum bubbles, the artist’s value continues to expand and shows no sign of bursting. Moebius’ commercial abilities and partnerships with some of the world’s most popular names means that he is a serious name in the art investment world.
For anyone looking to buy Michael Moebius art, there are just few galleries in the world currently exhibiting his works. Besides Maddox Gallery in the UK and Europe and another one in Toronto, the Los Angeles- and Miami-based Art Angels art gallery has an exclusive working relationship with the artist for the American market. Most famously, Michael Moebius gives a new dimension to popular cultural icons, adding brightly coloured gum bubbles to monochrome portraits. Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth have all been reimagined in this style, up to his latest work ("All you need is gum") where he depicts the four Beatles all with signature gum bubbles.
In terms of artistic influences, Moebius cites inspiration from Italian Renaissance artist Titian and the genius baroque artist Caravaggio, as well as more contemporary names such as Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Alberto Vargas.
THE STORY OF A TALENT STARTED AFTER THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL. THROUGH HIS STRIKING SYMBOLISM MICHAEL MOEBIUS GIVES A NEW DIMENSION TO POPULAR CULTURAL ICONS, ADDING BRIGHTLY COLOURED GUM BUBBLES TO MONOCHROME PORTRAITS AND CREATING A NEW WAY OF COMMUNICATING EMOTIONS.
His novel portrayal of much-featured subjects make Moebius’ bubblegum works an art investment favourite. His art also acts as a window into his personality and creative vision.
What’s most interesting is the contrast between the communist ideals which influenced the artist (Michael was born in 1968 when Germany was still divided in two by the Berlin Wall) and the western values and popular culture.
Moebius became aware of cultural differences between his home and the rest of the world, and this incongruity plays a significant role in his art today.
M
ichael Moebius came into the world in 1968, in Germany. Having developed a love for art at an early age, cartooning became his first passion. However, in the then-communist East Germany, more pragmatic pursuits were the order of the day. Art would have to be put on the back burner while a formal education was pursued, and Michael decided on a career in engineering and construction. It was during a stint working in a parallel field of architectural illustration that Michael happened upon a book featuring the pin-ups of Alberto Vargas. A new love affair took root, and Michael decided that figurative art would be his life’s work.
"ALMOST ALL OF THE ITEMS WHICH WE RECEIVED FROM THE WEST PART OF THE WORLD SUCH AS MAGAZINES, TOYS, SODA CANS WERE FORBIDDEN IN EAST BERLIN. AS A CHILD AND GROWING UP I WOULD DEARLY HOLD ON TO THE THEN-FORBIDDEN ITEMS… THESE REALLY INFLUENCED ME WITH THEIR COLOURS, DESIGNS AND SCENTS".
He started studying painting at the academy of arts in Dresden, and in 1998 he got a big breakthrough. It was at this time, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, that Michael was able to make his way to the United States. His talent as a painter and photographer was readily apparent, and he quickly became a sought-after favorite of collectors. Michael has already been part of major exhibitions throughout the US. His collector base and publishers include Playboy, Procter & Gamble, Laura Biagiotti, Vogue, Vanity Fair, other well-known companies, and (of course) Superyacht Digest.

The more Michael Moebius was pushed to conform to communist ideals, the more he became enamoured with western popular culture, and the more he was driven to create. After his conscription in the East German army, and then the fall of the Berlin Wall, he travelled to the US to dedicate his life entirely to art. moebiusart.com

A BRAND ON ACTION
L
et's talk about brand experience, that is, the personal knowledge that we acquire in every moment of interaction with a brand. The more experiences we have, the wider, stronger and better informed our opinions will be. To generate a positive impression from the perception of the brand experience, a company must bring its audience to enjoy what it offers, so the offer must be exceptional to the public, it must differentiate itself from that of its competitors, and above all it must be "real".
A UNIQUE AND EXCLUSIVE EVENT, LIKE NO OTHER. EVERY YEAR THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS REGATTA TAKES LIFE ON THE BEAUTIFUL ISLAND OF THE FRENCH ANTILLES, SURROUNDED BY ITS SIMPLE ART OF LIVING, BUT WITHOUT GIVING UP A TOUCH OF SOPHISTICATION... THE PERFECT COMBINATION FOR YACHT OWNERS.
The brand must be committed so that each of its touch points with the consumer is positive: it must be able to convey engagement, surprise, positive emotions... The best brand experience a brand can create is through a holistic attitude - mind and body together - in which the audience can feel completely involved.

BOATS WITH A DOUBLE LIFE

A shot from the St Barths Buckett Regatta 2019 Š Carlo Borlenghi
(56m), S/Y Perseus^3 (60m) and S/Y Seahawk (60m). A total of 36 yachts participated in the three days of racing, whose rules and ratings comply with SYRA (Superyacht Racing Association) and ORCsy criteria. The participating yachts were divided into five classes: Les Gazelles, Les Elegantes, Les Mademoiselles, Les Femmes, Les Grand Dames, and Les Voiles Blanches (Corinthian Spirit class). The overall winner position went to S/Y Hetairos (Baltic Yachts).
The St Barths Buckett Regatta, which every year fills with energy the island of Saint Barthelemy, can be actually defined a holistic experience through which guests can live the best brands of the largest sailing yachts builders, which every year, equipped with specialized racing teams meet at Gustavia Port to challenge each other with colorful spinnakers and vigorous turns.
The St. Barths Bucket Regatta is one of the most important and exclusive events for larger sailing yachts on the world calendar: a yachting experience lived by yacht owners and their friends with spirit of adventure, healthy competition and strong involvement. An experiential rendez-vous, which allows all the privileged guests to escape from the daily routine and immerse themselves in a unique and fascinating event, seasoned with adrenaline and enthusiasm, in an informal atmosphere, surrounded by a landscape of absolute beauty, in a full and deep contact with nature.
The week of the St. Barths Bucket Regatta was an important moment for Perini Navi: while on one side of the world, on the French Antilles of the Caribbean Sea, the Italian shipyard was involved with yacht owners and guests in all the events that animate the sailing event, their building facility in Viareggio saw the hull of the first S/Y 42m E-volution arriving from Turkey, to be positioned inside the shed to continue the construction process.
The sailing yachts' world, unlike motorboats', has a double life: you can indulge in holidays with your family and friends sailing across the oceans, reaching the most beautiful corners of the world, or enjoy a break participating with your special racing teams, at annual events, such as The Bucket in St Barth.
The St. Barths Bucket Regatta is a moment of strong relationship among all participants, an extraordinary occasion to share emotions with yacht owners, friends and sailing teams. At the last 32th edition last March, Perini Navi saw its own burgee defended at sea by S/Y Aquarius (46m), S/Y Rosehearty

A BRAND WITH A STRONG IDENTITY
Through this construction, Perini Navi also embraces the theme of eco-sustainability and protection of the marine environment: the 42m E-volution is the first sailing yacht by Perini Navi with hybrid propulsion. The yacht uses an electric engine to offset the use of the main diesel engine. The diesel-electric drivetrain delivers silent cruising and a range of 3,000 nautical miles at 9 knots, in diesel mode.

Even the sailing superyachts builders often participate actively in these events. In a certain way and metaphorically speaking, we can say that they live their product twice. First, during the two or three years they need to build the yacht, and, secondly, when they participate in this kind of regattas with their clients and guests.
As the first hull in a new line, the 42m performance cruising yacht represents the beginning of a new exciting era for Perini Navi. While a second hull has already been sold, the owners of the first unit have chosen their interior designer, Arch. Marco Costanzi, a name and a talent in the development of houses and showrooms projects, at his debut in the yachting world.
A 1:1 scale mock-up of the whole stern area of this model was built at the Viareggio shipyard, both in the 42m and 47m version. This area is, in fact, an important feature in terms of space and liveability of the boat and thanks to the creation of the mock-up, the owner - and other potential clients - can actually realize dimensions and proportions of what they are building and begin to imagine themselves in their wonderful vacation moments.
As to the other boats currently in build, Perini Navi's production plans span seven yachts, four sailing and three motor: 42m E-volution sailing yacht; 42m E-volution GTS sailing yacht; 47m E-volution sailing yacht; 60m Classic sailing yacht; 53m Voyager motoryacht; 56m Voyager motoryacht; 25m Eco-tender motoryacht, recently launched.
Perini Navi is currently the shipyard with the highest number of sailing megayachts under construction: this new 42m is the first hull of the E-volution series, created by Perini Navi’s in-house designers in collaboration with renowned American performance yacht specialists Reichel / Pugh. The naval architecture and sail plan offer the ideal compromise between cruising comfort and performance. Equipped with a lifting keel, the yacht will be powerful and easy to handle.
Sloop-rigged, the 42m in the E-volution series, is built from aluminium with a carbon-fibre mast, boom and rigging. In terms of aesthetics, the crisp exterior styling by Franco Romani, Perini Navi’s Style & Design Director, breaks with tradition, while the terraced aft deck introduces more space and improves functionality in addition to bringing guests into closer contact with the water.

WHAT'S ON IN ST BARTH
THE ITALIAN TRADITION AT "CASA PERINI"
The shoreside social activities during the St Barths Bucket Regatta are unparalleled with the Bucket days being St Barths second biggest week of the year after only their famed New Year’s Eve festivities! During the day, race viewing parties are held daily at some of the island’s most iconic beachside establishments. Each night, Bucket parties are held at private villas and at local restaurants in typical St Barths tradition. Many St Barths regulars passionately proclaim that Bucket Week is their favorite time of the year.
As per tradition, "Casa Perini" hosted the opening and closing evenings of the St. Barths Bucket. Perini Navi opened the doors of “Casa Perini” to their friends and guests, offering the sophisticated cuisine of the Michelin-starred chef from the famous “Da Vittorio” restaurant.
What could be better for the guests than meeting every evening in a marvelous villa in the hills, overlooking the sea with a breathtaking view of Gustavia Port, and dining with the best tradition of Italian cuisine? If it is true that Perini is an iconic Italian brand in the nautical world, and that it embodies values and history of the Made in Italy, why not convey all these elements through the other aspect for which Italy is famous in the world, its food?
Among the collateral events, there is also an evening in which guests are invited to visit the sailing yachts taking part in the competition. It is the socalled "Bucket Yacht Hop" night. One of the most colorful social events on the schedule during the week; the Bucketeers meet to party and show the willingness of crews to get creative with party themes, signature cocktails and entertainment.
The main ingredient of Italian cuisine is its simplicity. With many dishes composed of few ingredients, Italian chefs rely on quality rather than on the complexity of preparation. Perini Navi wanted, in this way, to share with its guests the values of its brand, through simple but genuine codes, characterized by an authentic tradition.
The event, which is by invitation only, allows various participants to also visit the other boats, know each other, spend convivial moments and develop new relationships.

INTERVIEW WITH THE MANAGEMENT OF PERINI NAVI
50m range Perini Navi could be able to offer projects and that these ones were signed by an important name such as Reichel/Pugh".
During one of the many evening events, we could collect some short interviews with Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO, and Edoardo Tabacchi, Vice Chairman and Majority Shareholder, regarding the life at the yard and its development.
About the entrepreneurial approach to the re-launch of the yard, Edoardo Tabacchi stated: "When I considered Perini Navi as a new investment, I was not pushed by the same logic that usually belongs to an investment fund. The approach was entrepreneurial. We started to redefine the team of people and the range of product, trying to make an evolution of the past. But never forgetting the values and the passions that made this company great. I’m always in touch with the managers of the company, driving and pushing them towards the future. I love this job very much, we never feel tired, we put all our passion and our strength on the project, because we wanna reach the result to make Perini Navi strong and leader in the world again. For me this is the only way to work and to deal with investments. The company and the market benefit from this approach: they know that they can rely on a shareholder able to be a reference every day, able to guide the projects according to a precise vision, able to trace the route to the goals we want to achieve".
About the results achieved so far, Lamberto Tacoli commented: "We can undoubtedly talk about a real success. I say this objectively. Until today the company has never focused on boats measuring less than 60 meters, the traditional range in which it has consolidated the brand. It was not easy, we worked a lot on our projects and our efforts are giving excellent results, paving the way to new great opportunities for the future. What makes our boats unique is the work done on the product, we are the only ones to design boats in-house. Our projects are inspired by the yard’s philosophy, our lines preserve its tradition; thanks to its strong identity, our sailing yachts are immediately recognizable. And certainly a great job has been done for the renewal of the brand. To give it new vitality. And the owners have understood this and caught it in a timely manner. When we took over Perini Navi, we looked at the market and tried to find a gap to fill, and so Perini Navi from “project” has become “product”. We worked to ensure that in the 4031

ON BOARD WITH THE OWNERS
About the regatta and their active participation, Uschi and Udo said:
Far from the work schedule at least for one week, yacht owners meet in St Barth to compete with their giants in the waves. They participate with enthusiasm and clear conviction. Standing next to their Captain, ready to leave at the signal, and assisted by other two professional sailors, who evaluate the changing sea conditions and functionality of the onboard systems, they wait on the flybridge for their turn, hoping to cut the starting line according to the correct times. "Aquarius, get ready to start ... three, two, one ... Aquarius has cut the starting line!". When on board you hear this message coming via radio, it's showtime. Every crew member has a precise role and when the majestic sails are opened, the magic begins. Everything else is pure adventure.
"Participating in such a high-level sailing event takes the Captain and the crew, and also us as yacht owners, much time for planning. Especially when the number of crew members varies from 7 to 17, and you also have invited 8 guests on board to enjoy the event. Mix all of these things together - the enthusiasm of the race, all the racing activities taking place on all decks, the spectacular huge sails filling out, the power of the vessel and 1300 square meters crusing in the waves - what you get is a strong emotion. The waves play with the yacht and with the feelings of every guest on board. Special guests, such as Superyacht Digest, are always welcome and ensure a greater sharing of fun. Getting in the heart of things, when everyone is needed to help... that's the meaning of the race, or at least it is for Udo and Uschi".
Superyacht Digest was on board S/Y Aquarius on the third day of the race and could talk with the owners and know about their story. It was summer when they were cruising with their motoryacht in the British Virgin Islands. Suddenly they saw a big sailing yacht passing next to them. Udo and Ursula (Ushi for friends) fell immediately in love with that beautiful boat, they found out it was a Perini Navi build and once back in Europe after summer, they visited the yard in Viareggio.

In 2000 he created the Italian Pavilion for the Hannover Expo. In 2011 he curated the Venice Pavilion for the 54th Venice Biennale. Among his best known works we find The Falling House, located in Piazza Bonini in Soveria Mannelli (Catanzaro). The master took part in the St Barths Buckett Regatta together with his wife Carla Plessi, designer of bags of the highest quality. The master expressed his emotions with the following words:
"Perini not only gives yachting emotions but also knows how to highlight and emphasize the values of our life, which are friendship and love. Perini has allowed us to spend a week characterized by the lifestyle of Casa Perini, making us live really unique moments."
"The digital blue waters of Plessi and the natural blue waters of Perini meet in St Barth and merge into an extraordinary luminous waterfall of friendship, energy and happiness."

FEADSHIP
RULING THE SEVEN SEAS THIS YEAR MARKS 170 YEARS OF SHIPBUILDING AT FEADSHIP VAN LENT. HERE WE LOOK AT HOW THE DUTCH YARD HAS BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH THE BEST IN THE WORLD’S MOST EXCLUSIVE INDUSTRY. Photos © Feadship
S
ince its inception, Dutch shipyard Feadship has adapted and evolved, grown and expanded. From modest beginnings building small wooden boats, today, Feadship is synonymous with the biggest and best custom superyachts in the world - and it’s certainly not hard to see why.
A long list of boundary-pushing superyachts over the years has firmly cemented Feadships’ status as the pinnacle of high-quality, innovative yacht building. The Jon Bannenberg-designed 46.6-metre Azteca is one such member of the Feadship family, which set design trends for years to come following her launch in 1983. The 78.2-metre Venus, is another, with her extensive use of glass, super tech focus and truly unique exterior design.
But it is not just the innovative designs and trendsetting qualities of their fleet that has so firmly established Feadship as one of the leading builders of custom superyachts. Feadship has never been a brand satisfied to rest on its laurels. The heart of the sustained success and ever-increasing prestige of the Dutch superyacht powerhouse is a dedication to quality, to craftsmanship and to - what they like to call - uniquity. Uniquity is at the heart of the Feadship DNA and, as time has told so far, has allowed the brand to not only remain in the game but dominate it. Here we delve into the world of Feadship and explore how the yard has managed to rule the Seven Seas for almost two centuries.

The construction of the 88-metre Project 816 well underway at the yard. Giving an extra dimension to the ambience, the new build was a real protagonist on the evening of the 170year anniversary celebration.
2019: A YEAR OF MILESTONES 2019 is shaping up to be one of the most prolific years of Feadship’s history: a momentous 170-year anniversary celebration of the Royal Van Lent Shipyard - one of Feadship’s founders - the opening of a brand new, sustainability-centric facility in Amsterdam, and sheds full to bursting of secretive superyacht projects that are bound to break the mould upon their respective launches over the next few years. A brand that knows how to commemorate its achievements in style, the Feadship team pulled out all the stops when it came to their 170th-anniversary celebrations in early May. And what better way to celebrate than with the official opening of the most innovative Feadship facility to date? The spectacular opening ceremony was attended by Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, along with 2,500 Feadship employees from across all four of Feadship’s facilities in the Netherlands. Jan-Bart Verkuyl, CEO of Royal Van Lent, addressed the audience at the glamorous event, highlighting the real strength of the brand: a skilled workforce of talented artisans, craftsman, engineers and everything in between.

Commenting on the opening of the innovative new facility in the Dutch capital, Toni Belloni, Group Managing Director of LVMH (the French luxury conglomerate and owner of Feadship Royal Van Lent), agrees that the new facilities commitment to greener construction allows Feadship to stay ahead of the game. “This new facility will allow Feadship to stay at the cutting edge of innovation and continue to build superyachts that will change history”, Belloni comments. “LMVH always prides itself on employing the finest artisans, and it is certain that the best yacht builders in the world are working for Feadship”.
“As we celebrate our 170th anniversary, our predecessors could never have imagined such an exceptional facility”, Verkuyl said. “Almost everything has changed over the years, but the one thing that has remained consistent is the skills of the workforce. Their constant desire to make things better has allowed Feadship to become the world’s leading superyacht brand”. Measuring 425,000 cubic metres, the new Amsterdam facility will be used in tandem with the Royal Van Lent yard in Kaag to build and refit Feadship yachts up to 160-metres in length. Despite substantially increasing capacity, the aspect of the new facility that perhaps pushes Feadship most into the future is the intense focus on sustainability.
The first project is already underway in the new facilities, with the 88-metre Feadship currently only known as Project 816 making progress in the Amsterdam sheds.
Spending thousands of hours planning and paying particular attention to eco-friendly, contemporary design, the new yard has been heralded as ‘the most eco-friendly superyacht yard in the world’. It’s a hard statement to argue with when you take a closer look. Just a handful of the yard’s smart solutions include district heating, more than 2,000 solar panels, LED lighting, a three-tier ventilation system and a double thickness insulation layer.

The Van Lent yard in 1940
EVOLUTION: THE FEADSHIP STORY
From the 1950s onwards, Feadship’s success was exponential. Feadship quickly impressed the American market with their steel construction abilities - a material that was rarely favoured over the traditional wood at the time. As their name grew, so did their reputation. It wasn’t long before the yard was hurtled into the limelight, and orders streamed in from influential clients like Malcolm Forbes, Henry Ford II and Arthur Wirtz.
The Feadship story as we know it officially started life in 1949. At the time, the European luxury goods market was in a state of long recovery following the devastation of WWII. With a long heritage of Dutch shipbuilding and a pressing need to expand into new, more lucrative markets, the De Vries and Van Lent families decided to join forces. Along with De Voogt Naval Architects and a handful of other Dutch shipyards, they refused to buckle under economic pressure and formed the First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders. The aim? To consolidate resources and successfully break into the booming American market.
The 60s was a period of steady growth for the Feadship brand and marked the beginning of a technological revolution in shipbuilding. Retractable stabiliser fins and air-conditioning were introduced on board Feadship yachts for the first time, and the perpetual race for unparalleled comfort and luxury began. By the 1970s, Feadship was firmly established as the best of the best when it came to luxury yachting. As technology progressed, so did their capabilities. Cue the boom of big boat building, and when Feadship launched the 64.64-metre Al Riyadh in 1978, the yachting world was astounded.
Four members left throughout the 50s and 60s, with De Vries, Van Lent and De Voogt all remaining. Many De Vries and Van Lent family members are still actively part of the Feadship dynasty today, while many of Feadship’s best designs have come from the drawing boards of the De Voogt studio.

The 80s and 90s saw the superyacht business explode. With this explosion came an influx of talented designers, engineers and naval architects, and a more collaborative approach to the creation of a truly custom yacht. Just some of the iconic Feadship collaborators over this period include Jon Bannenberg, Terence Disdale, Andrew Winch, Tim Heywood and Donald Starkey. Research and Development also took precedence, with the possibilities of complex bespoke design being explored like never before. A series of bold owners helped to distinguish Feadship’s fleet as one of the most innovative out there, including Virginian in 1991 with the introduction of a new layout across four full decks, and the 49.5-metre Sussurro in 1998, with her jet propulsion and top speeds of 46 knots.
Since then, superyachts have continued to increase in just about everything: size, capability, comfort and opulence. In 2015, Feadship launched their first 100+ metre superyacht when the 101.5-metre Symphony hit the water, and in 2018, the 110-metre Anna knocked her off the top spot. If rumours are to be believed, Anna will not remain at the number one spot for too much longer.

DEDICATION TO DESIGN The Feadship DNA is defined by uniquity. This means producing superyachts that make dreams come true by translating the owner’s personality and design DNA into a completely bespoke product. To achieve this, Feadship has long worked hand-in-hand with Studio De Voogt to harness the design office’s creativity and technical understanding. Over the years, this partnership has created the blueprints for some of the yard’s finest yachts.
It is at the studio’s headquarters in Haarlem where Feadship’s characteristic traditional lines originated from, while in more recent years the studio has developed along with the rest of the industry, staying ahead of the game to create innovative new concepts for a new generation of yachting clients. Backed up with a heritage dating back over 100 years, it is this depth of knowledge at De Voogt that give Feadship the unwavering ability to design yachts with the liberty and freehandedness that has repeatedly impressed an impressive list of discerning clients all around the world. As Feadship’s in-house design studio, Studio De Voogt is responsible for over half of all Feadships worldwide, a statistic that highlights the vital role the name has played in establishing the design DNA of the brand.

If any superyacht deserves to spend time enjoying the unrivalled care of the Feadship refit and maintenance experts it must surely be Archimedes (2008). Having recently completed an epic expedition into the Arctic, the 68-metre global explorer returned to Feadship for welldeserved pampering and various upgrades in August 2018.
REFIT: PRESERVING PEDIGREE Feadship means business when it comes to the preservation of pedigree. Feadship owners have been returning to the Netherlands for years to undertake maintenance, refit and serious rebuild projects at their home yards, ensuring their Feadship remains, well… a Feadship. Despite a long list of successful refits, the yard has always offered refit services exclusively to Feadship owners. In fact, they actively encourage their owners to return to their home yards for all major - and minor - modifications. The philosophy? For a Feadship, there’s no place like home.
In late 2018, the yard significantly stepped up their aftersales offering. Forming the globally operating company Feadship Refit & Services, Feadship stated loud and clear that they were more serious than ever before when it came to protecting the Feadship DNA. Lead by the ‘My Feadship’ support strategy, the new company combines the refit services previously undertaken by the individual Feadship yards: Feadship Rebuild, undertaking refits in the Netherlands; the Feadship Services Network, a partnership with four yards in the Mediterranean and United States; and the Feadship Authentication Certificate, the Feadship quality standard.
Following the announcement of the new company, the Feadship Refit & Services team wasted no time in welcoming several yachts home. “Whether you wish to rebuild the engine room, have an extension or install a new interior, there’s no place like the home yards, where the obsessive perfection to detail of the Feadship craftsmen secures the uniquity of a Feadship”, commented Pier Posthuma de Boer, Director of Feadship Refit & Services.

ARTEFACT: ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY INNOVATION. A BUZZWORD IN EVERY INDUSTRY, INNOVATION CONNOTES SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING EXCITING AND, ABOVE ALL, A GENERAL SENSE THAT THE BRAND OR PRODUCT IN QUESTION IS A CUT ABOVE ANYTHING THAT PRECEDED IT. AS WITH MOST BUZZWORDS, HOWEVER, MANY INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS FAIL TO LIVE UP TO THE HYPE. ONCE THE CURTAIN IS RAISED, THE DESCRIPTION SEEMS TO BENOTHING MORE THAN A MARKETING PLOY. TOO OFTEN THE WORLD IS LEFT QUESTIONING: WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS SO-CALLED REVOLUTIONARY INNOVATION? Photos © Nobiskrug

n this regards, the German shipyard Nobiskrug is a rare example of living up to the promise of real innovation. Combining 100 years of experience in naval, commercial and special ship building experience, Nobiskrug burst onto the big boat building scene in the year 2000 with the delivery of the 92.4-metre Tatoosh. Since then, the yard has built up a reputation for not only creating some of the largest superyachts in the world, but also some of the most groundbreaking. From their first yacht in 2000 to their latest yacht, the instantly-recognisable 142.8-metre Sailing Yacht A delivered in 2017, Nobiskrug is a brand which is more than just talk when it comes to creating unique vessels. Nobiskrug, arguably, is the most innovative creator of custom superyachts in the world.

However, it takes (at least) two to tango in the time and capital intensive game of superyacht construction. When it comes to creating yachts that truly break the mould, the key ingredient is a bold owner, willing to dive in at the deep end and take a risk… albeit a meticulously calculated risk. Defining the owners of the exclusive Nobiskrug fleet of 10, the yard’s Managing Director, Holger Kahl, says: "The one characteristic that all Nobiskrug owners have in common is vision".
"We create yachts that stand apart for their innovative aesthetic", he continues. "Their performance, their beauty, their onboard technology – and for pioneering in all areas". Looking at the Nobiskrug fleet, it’s clear that yacht owners who are looking to truly push the boundaries of yacht design come to Nobiskrug. And the next Nobiskrug yacht to hit the water will be no exception. Named Artefact, the next Nobiskrug features exterior design and naval architecture from the Canadian studio of Gregory C. Marshall, while her secretive interior design is from the drawing boards of London-based Reymond Langton Design. Measuring 80-metres and currently under construction in Rendsburg, Northern Germany, Artefact is on track for delivery in late summer, ready for her world debut at the Monaco Yacht Show 2019.
A mere glimpse at Artefact’s design renderings or images of the yacht under construction makes it immediately apparent that this is something altogether different. Her distinctive exterior design is comprised of 750 square metres of mismatched, geometric glass shapes, weighing almost 60 tonnes in total. The largest single glazed surface is 14.6 metres and, altogether, the yard has utilised 223 pieces of glass throughout her design. But it’s not just her eye-catching exterior design that makes Artefact stand out. Artefact, like all Nobiskrug yachts, is a unique collaboration between the designer, the yard and the owner. Though this is the first new build yacht project for the owner, he is no stranger to complex, boundary-pushing projects. Handson in every aspect of the design, engineering and construction processes, the owner was extremely influential in the entire project. As the team at the Gregory Marshall Studio tells us, this owner worked to bring a fresh perspective to the whole project.
One of those fresh perspectives was an almost unprecedented dedication to developing and installing environmentally conscious technologies, as well as achieving near zero noise and vibration levels. The yard has revealed that Artefact incorporates several new technological and engineering features to minimise its environmental impact. These include 23 square metres of solar panels on the sundeck hardtop, as well as a large battery storage system and a diesel-electric propulsion system developed with ABB. Upon delivery later this summer, Artefact will also be one of the first superyachts in the world to meet IMO Tier III emissions regulations.

Bound to be one of the central talking points of the annual yachting event in Monaco
Talk abounds regarding Artefact’s technological advancements and radical, glass-covered exterior design, but when it comes to her interior, details are scarce. Though it’s often the case that owners of these high-profile boats choose to keep at least some aspects of their new toys out of the public eye, the industry and yacht enthusiasts alike are always hungry to know more. With confidentiality key in the superyacht business, all that we know so far is that her interior is defined by an abundance of ‘natural light and a fluid layout’. Talking to Kahl this summer ahead of her completion, Kahl revealed a tiny glimpse into what guests can expect to see if they are lucky enough to step on board. "Her interior design details will be revealed in time, but I can tell you that specially commissioned artwork adorns the walls and there is bespoke flooring throughout. The elaborate decorative walls are certainly one of her stand out interior design features".
Bound to be one of the central talking points of the annual yachting event in Monaco, Kahl discusses the importance of the Monaco Yacht Show for not only showcasing the capabilities of the Nobiskrug team but for offering inspiration to other yacht owners. "The Monaco Yacht Show is the number one event on the yachting calendar thanks to its captive audience of both current and future owners", Kahl explains. "Artefact will provide Nobiskrug with the perfect opportunity to showcase our ability to produce fully custom, cutting-edge designs, and to inspire owners with an aesthetic that pushes the boundaries in every way. When combined with the latest eco-friendly features that Artefact possesses, she will be a shining example of what future new builds can achieve, not just from Nobiskrug, but across the entire yacht industry as a whole". It takes the unique combination of visionary owner, talented design team and impossibly capable shipyard to create a yacht that lives up to the innovation hype. With Artefact, this synergy has not just broken the mould but reinvented it.

INSIDE THE DESIGN | Geoff Harrington, Senior Designer, Gregory Marshall Artefact comes in at 80 metres, though the original concept design started at 55 metres. Tell us about that progression. GH: We worked closely with the owner and Captain Aaron Clark to develop a vision for how Artefact will be used, and the size grew to advance comfort at sea, increase the size of the family deck and to accommodate the large tender in an internal tender bay forward. The 55-metre concept had the same number of decks and aggressive, edgy styling. As she grew to 80 metres, we worked through iterations of her styling in close consultation with the owner. Her appearance became more refined and elegant, adding balance to her aggressive stance and evolving into what we see today. Artefact is the owner’s very first yacht - a substantial project to step into the yachting game! What challenges or benefits accompanied this?
GH: This is the owner’s first yacht, but it is certainly not his first large custom project. He brought an uncommon mindset for creating something original and unique. We had many discussions between ourselves, Captain Clark and the owner weighing the balance between layout, appearance, onboard guest experience, comfort and privacy, crew service and operation. The owner said several times: "If we do that, then it will just be a regular boat!". In many ways, that is the mission statement for Artefact: not ordinary, extraordinary.
M/Y Artefact, interiors, detail
What makes Artefact stand out in terms of design? GH: The onboard experience for the owner and their guests is at the core of Artefact’s design. You may have noticed the glass… The enormous windows provide unmatched views from the interior, but their configuration creates personal spaces with privacy and shelter from wind and weather on the exterior. For example, the midship VIP windows cant out over the water, literally hanging above the sea. But they also provide a windbreak for the attached balcony. From this balcony, you cannot see into the owner’s suite or their exterior deck aft, nor can they see into the VIPs forward. And you can’t see into any of these suites from above or below without making a great effort! We removed the exterior decks from the midship section of the deckhouse, avoiding the typical layering on a yacht and creating Artefact’s narrow waist. The fascias on the exterior of the yacht were then developed to create connective tissue and give Artefact a kinetic stance. For the hull and stairway windows, they need to be large, but to add something geometric to the hull sides would be at odds with the rest of the design - so they’re not! Artefact is undoubtedly a game-changing superyacht. What makes her special?
GH: It takes a particular client to be willing to create something so unique and see it through from concept to completion. Artefact is not only visually stunning, but she is also technically exceptional as well. That takes hundreds of tremendously skilled and experienced people to engineer and construct her properly. We have always felt that Artefact is something special, and we know the owner feels the same way. That is the most important thing.

INSIDE THE DESIGN | Geoff Harrington, Senior Designer, Gregory Marshall Artefact challenges many traditional aspects of superyacht GAs. What are some of her key design features that display that reimagining? HK: The distinctive interior and exterior design of Artefact reflect the discerning owner’s persistence to achieve a list of specific criteria that included environmental responsibility, technological innovation and guest comfort. For example, the quest for silent operation and maximum stability has been a driving force behind the concept for this vessel. In a major departure from convention, the master stateroom is situated in the aft rather than the bow and all guest entertainment areas are located in low-acceleration zones. Extensive hull development and testing have ensured that the vessel will be both comfortable for guests when cruising, as well as having excellent seakeeping capabilities. When it comes to eco-friendly technology and design, Artefact takes the lead. Do you see more owners concerned with their environmental impact?
HK: There is always a desire to innovate with a new build, but Nobiskrug owners particularly look to push the boundaries of yacht design, both in aesthetics and engineering. To be at the forefront of such a technically innovative industry is always an appealing concept to owners, and if these innovations are paired with cutting-edge design and pioneering environmental features, then the yacht and her owner stand apart from the rest. The need to protect the oceans and environment will only increase with time, so by leading from the front on these areas, a new build yacht will remain relevant for a long time after her delivery date.
Meeting on Project 790
What do you envision as the next step towards more eco-friendly yachts? HK: In the future, we will continue to see growth and innovation within propulsion systems and hybrid engines, as well as yachts that possess sleeker, more efficient hull designs. This significantly reduces both costs to the owner and a yacht’s carbon footprint. What difficulties come with challenging the status quo in yacht design and engineering?
HK: With the rapid development in software and engineering solutions for superyachts, improved technology on board is more affordable and efficient than ever before. But the biggest challenges that we face is how to include and implement the latest software and engineering innovations in a way that ensures a yacht is future-proofed for years to come. Technological advances are happening all the time, and we need to ensure that not only are our yachts equipped with the best possible solutions available on the market but that they will continue to serve an owner’s needs for years to come without compromise. Pushing the boundaries of yacht design will always be part of Nobiskrug’s identity, but not to the detriment of performance or an owner’s experience. What defines Nobiskrug yachts to you?
HK: There are many different facets to achieving a ‘perfect yacht’, and even then, perfection remains so subjective that one owner’s ideal will not match another’s. One thing that we can be sure of, however, is that at Nobiskrug, we make sure always to balance design with technology, so that our perfect outcome is a beautiful marriage between art and science.

ince departing the Italian yard’s facilities in Livorno in November 2018, Benetti’s custom superyacht Spectre has enjoyed an excess of success. Taking the title of Best Custom-Built Yacht at the Asia Boating Awards 2019 in April, just a month later, Spectre was awarded Best Yacht in the Displacement Yachts 500 - 1,999 tonnes category in the prestigious World Superyacht Awards in London. Just two weeks after that? Spectre took the prize for the Best of the Best: Motor Yachts from 200 to 300 feet in the US Robb Report annual Best of the Best Awards. Spectre, according to the yachting experts, receives resounding 10s across the board. With clean exterior lines from the Italian designer Giorgio Cassetta, advanced naval architecture by Mulder Design, interior design by Benetti’s talented in-house team and the close cooperation of her owner, Spectre is truly the culmination of years of expertise from every facet of the yacht building experience. This intense, collaborative approach to her build, design and engineering results in a superior product. And this is precisely the approach that has made Spectre a custom yacht worthy of recognition from Europe to Asia to the USA. Measuring 69.2-metres in length with a volume of 1403 GT, Spectre is the second yacht to be commissioned at Benetti by the prolific yacht owners John and Jeanette Staluppi, in addition to the extensive refit of the 52-metre Elysium (ex. Quantum of Solace). With the 60.96-metre Diamonds Are Forever launched in 2012, the Benetti team explains the importance of working with such an influential yachting client: "Mr Staluppi is a very experienced and demanding owner. Every single one of his yachts has become an iconic benchmark in the business - from speed to design to comfort. Working with hands-on owners such as John and Jeanette Staluppi is always challenging and inspiring at the same time".
SUPERYACHT DIGEST |

The technology onboard is undoubtedly designed for just that. Speaking of the combination of an innovative hull design from Mulder Design and the advanced stabiliser system from Naiad Dynamics, the Benetti team say: "Spectre has been noted for her superior performance and cutting-edge technology, incorporating a High Speed Cruising Hull from Mulder Design together with the Total Ride Control system from Naiad Dynamics. The mix of these two technologies allows Spectre to incredibly perform in terms of range, maximum speed, and cruising speed".
"Their inspiration, knowledge and ideas challenge us to set the bar a little higher every time and to constantly better ourselves and the work that we do”, Benetti continues. The result? Spectre is a beautiful boat, and Benetti would be honoured to once again start a new project with Staluppi and our talented team of engineers, craftsmen and artisans in the future".
Although taking delivery just a few months ago, building a new boat sometime soon may not be entirely out of the question for Staluppi. Always treating yacht ownership as a business, Staluppi has been hugely successful over the years when it comes to building - and selling - his superyachts. It all started with the purchase of his very first superyacht in 1985, the 36-metre Denison-built motor yacht For Your Eyes Only. From there, Staluppi climbed up the superyacht size classes, learning from each project to create the perfect luxury yacht - and one that would retain high resale value in order to be snapped up on the brokerage market. To this date, Staluppi has owned 18 vessels, 13 of which he has commissioned himself, and all of which he has successfully sold before moving on to the next one.
"The High Speed Cruising Hull technology increases cruising speed by 30% compared to conventional displacement hulls and allows Spectre to cruise at a maximum speed of 21.2 knots", Benetti continues. "On top of that, this technology improves onboard comfort and increases fuel efficiency at long range speed, thus obtaining a serious long-range capability of 6,500 nm at 12 knots. The Total Ride Control system significantly improves the cruising stability of Spectre and onboard comfort using two roll stabilising fins, two forward pitch control canards and three independently controlled stern blades".
As an owner who builds yachts for a mix of business and pleasure, the improvement in onboard experience as rewarded by these innovations is essential. Spectre is a yacht built with charter in mind and combined with Spectre’s shallow draft, making her perfect for exploring the ultimate yachting hotspots in the crystal waters of the Caribbean and Bahamas, this level of onboard comfort translates to a seamless yachting experience.
An astute businessman and passionate yachtsman, with each of Staluppi’s boats he has aimed to push boundaries. With Staluppi’s previous projects, these boundary-pushing aspirations are namely focused on the achievement of recordbreaking speeds. With each of the yachts in Staluppi’s fleet named after a James Bond film, the slightly-kitsch naming process is apt. Staluppi’s yachts have epitomised that James Bond-cool, super-spy philosophy over the years: fast, slick, technologically advanced and super luxurious.

But comfort and the maximisation of the superyacht life isn’t just down to the technical aspects. Creating the perfect ambience onboard with a well-designed interior is just as integral, teamed with all the amenities you can imagine to explore, relax and socialise in style. Amongst the long list of facilities on board Spectre is a full-beam spa area including a gym, hammam and massage room, a custom swimming pool, plenty of formal dining areas and a pizza oven for a casual, evening of al fresco dining at sea. The lower deck also features a tender garage, which can accommodate a 10-metre tender, a second 7-metre support boat, and two Jet Skis.

In line with his usual model of yacht ownership, Staluppi wasted no time in listing the newly built Spectre for sale once he took delivery at the beginning of 2019. The Staluppi’s did manage to take advantage of a few weeks of winter cruising before Spectre was sold in February 2019. Following a short period on the market, Spectre was sold at an asking price of ₏69,000,000 - a testament to what value a chartersavvy commissioning owner can bring to the custom yacht creation process.

A further testament to the success of Spectre was made when she took a World Superyacht Award in May 2019, the internationally recognised awards for excellence in the superyacht business. Attending the event in London in May as Spectre took the title of Best Yacht in the Displacement yachts between 500 and 1,999 tonnes, designer Giorgio Casetta says: "The World Superyacht Awards are assigned by a jury of experienced yacht owners. The creation of this yacht was remarkable teamwork with many parties involved. For me, winning this WSA was a special emotion. From a yachtsman’s perspective, Spectre is a project with great balance. She offers nearly everything one could ask from a superyacht of her volume, plus some exceptional features such as her speed and efficiency. All her areas are large and bright, and the layout flows neatly for both guests and crew".

INSIDE SPECTRE Inside Spectre, an opulent but decidedly chic interior design awaits. The collaboration between the yard’s talented interior design team and the owner translates into a sophisticated interior environment. Her dark woodwork, sideboards and closets, glass mirrors, white marble and white leather elegantly contrast throughout. The interior design is a homage to 1930s Art Deco in New Orleans and Florida, which pays tribute late-19th Century Liberty French hotels and boutiques of Paris, and the classic French style is modernised throughout with contemporary fabric selections and colour accents. No detail was too small for the Benetti Interior Design team in the creation of the perfect ambience on board, and this sophisticated style has been executed right down to the designs of the carpet and Armani fabrics, and the windows which hark back to the unique Liberty shops in the French capital.

SPACIOUS LIVING The owner’s suite is one of the highlights on board Spectre. Situated on the upper deck, the private area includes a study, his-and-her bathrooms and unique external access to the bow from two specially designed side terraces, as explicitly requested by the owner. The upper deck is dedicated to indulgence and relaxation. A generous 110 square metre area is furnished with an impressive 4-metre dining table, al fresco dining and socialising spaces. Inside, a 90-square-metre panoramic salon with a large L-shaped lounge area and seating area is found. Designer Giorgio Casetta says: "The huge, open plan upper deck lounge, with the uninterrupted flow towards the aft exterior cockpit, and the panoramic views from the master cabin are easy winners in terms of Spectre’s design, as are the particularly bright main deck VIP staterooms".

CUSTOM DESIGN Utilising the experience gained over the past four decades of yacht ownership, Staluppi made sure that Spectre was equipped with the very best custom features from bow to stern. The bridge deck is a central social area on board, entirely dedicated to leisure and pleasure. This space incorporates a bespoke swimming pool, comfortable sun pads, a fully equipped bar and a central lounge area with a modular design which can be easily modified depending on the guest’s wishes. Also found on the bridge deck is a more informal dining area for making the most of al fresco dining under the stars. Guests are served by two large buffet areas complete with grill and pizza oven. Moving inside, the wheelhouse features a fully integrated, highly technological control board, from which guests and captain alike can enjoy excellent visibility while cruising.

THE YACHT LIFE Other standout features on board Spectre include a touch and go helipad for easy access to and from the yacht, as well as a beautifully designed glass elevator connecting all decks. The beach club is home to floortoceiling sliding glass doors separate the beach club from the elements, and lead directly onto a large platform for direct access to the ocean. Commenting on the creation of the perfect yacht life experience, Giorgio Cassetta concludes: "Working closely with the yard and the owner, we have created a mature yacht that will age with grace. Spectre has been designed with years of experience behind her, and will keep all of her guests happy for a long time!"

FOCUS & INTERVIEW | FERRETTI GROUP
CRN AND THE SUPERYACHT YARD: THE FUTURE IS NOW FERRETTI GROUP RECENTLY INVESTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION SITE OF ANCONA TO MODERNIZE AND EXPAND THE EXISTING AND NEW SHEDS. IN ADDITION TO THIS, THERE IS MANY OTHER NEWS. THIS IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW SHOWS HOW THE GROUP AND ESPECIALLY CRN, THE SHIPYARD WHERE CUSTOM MEGAYACHTS ARE MANUFACTURED, DEAL WITH THE FUTURE CHALLENGES.
O
into the market 30 new models, which represented an unprecedented number. This wasn’t just about restyling, but they were completely new projects. The new goals included investments on a young team as well as the empowerment of the second lines, where they proved to be talented and worthy. And, also, hiring key people with an experience in industries other than yachting, but still related to the field of luxury. The Group needed new challenges".
n last June we made an interview to Stefano de Vivo, Ferretti Group Chief Commercial Officer. We met him at the office in Milan and together we drew a comprehensive overview of the Group’s history, seven years after the Chinese acquisition. In 2012 the Ferretti Group was acquired by the Chinese company Weichai and in 2016 F. Investments, the holding of Eng. Piero Ferrari’s family. The Chinese ownership immediately showed an outstanding, serious, industrial and long-sighted vision. Weichai paid to the whole supply chain 100% of the debit, thus preventing the crisis of the suppliers and enabling the shipyard to be readily operational. Nonetheless, some suppliers were getting into financial difficulties.
As regards fully-custom production, the shipyard adopted a specific strategy, allowing CRN to make a significant step forward in the product industrialization procedure: "while remaining a handcrafted and customized project, we managed to industrialize the basic stages related to procurement. Without this step, we couldn’t grow".
"Today we work with a renovated supply chain; the task of the new management, which took office in May 2014, was to make a more accurate selection of the suppliers, both in terms of reliability and of ability to grow with the company".
With the arrival of Eng. Piero Ferrari in 2016 as a shareholder, even though he was already into the company from 2013 as Product Development Manager, Ferretti Group started what de Vivo describes as its “second stage”: the partners decided on a capital increase to give a push to the company and to ensure the achievement of the long-term goals set. The main strength of Ferretti Group was the power of its two shareholders: both the Chinese investors and Mr. Ferrari have a financial power which could ensure a long-term vision for the Group, to foster a sound and steady growth.
The first stage culminates with the arrival of Alberto Galassi, in May 2014 - says de Vivo - when the first management line was renovated and Stefano took the office as Chief Commercial Officer. Here the Group started to make significant investments in R&D, a business area considered as the essence by the Chinese investors. The company changed its building and procurement procedures: "the Group had reached a stalemate. We reorganized in order to launch new vessels. After few months, in January 2015, we introduced

the highest number of boats launched in the last 10 years, including the years of the crisis. "This achievement shows the energy of our projects in terms of style, design and Group strategy; having different brands led by several drivers entails greater efforts and higher costs, but it also allows us to be more focused on their specific identity. This means that a customer who wants to have the top in the segment, finds the perfect match in the solutions of the Ferretti Group, specific within the different market niches. In short, being focused on different brands requires a harder work at the shipyard, but facilitates the targeting of the customer. Aiming at emphasizing the specific essence of each of our projects, this is perceived more clearly by the customer, making their meeting and mutual belonging more natural. This is the secret of the Ferretti Group below 50m".
With their involvement in Ferretti Group, "the Chinese investors", explains de Vivo, “learned to better appreciate the boats and the yachting lifestyle, mainly because they understood that they provide a larger framework of action compared to the holiday industry, that they aren’t just related to a concept of life at sea and that they could be also used in their business affairs". Also Eng. Piero Ferrari, with his trained and experienced eye, master in the fields of design, innovation and technology, who was involved from the very first day in any project of the Ferretti Group, inspiring designers and specialists with his tips and insights, could take part to an exceptional event, meaning extraordinary, which characterized the history of the most iconic brand of the Group: the inception of the project Riva 50m, recently delivered to the owner, and the relevant construction. Speaking of challenges, Stefano de Vivo explains that certainly the dramatic team and organizational change in the company was a hard test for all the stakeholders involved. "People had to be persuaded that we were working to lead to an improvement. From 2009 to 2014 the Group was involved in difficult situation several times. But the messages we received were encouraging, we knew we were hitting the right track. And launching so many new vessels was a huge challenge as well. Many said it was impossible, but we did it!"
In the megayacht segment, above 50m, this strategy hadn’t yet been introduced. CRN, Riva and Pershing are three completely different brands, with different reference targets. "We are focusing on a communication aimed at strengthening the specific identities of these yachts and we expect soon that the Superyacht Yard of Ancona reaches the top of its operational potential, of course preventing any overloading. We work towards selling 3,000 GT per year, with the goal of becoming not the shipyard with the highest number of building units above 50 meters, but with vessels longer than 50m which perfectly match the identity and the needs of our clients. Who is looking for speed will choose a Pershing, who wants a rich and distinctive boat will buy a Riva, who intends to design his megayacht will build her with CRN".
MARKET POSITION OF FERRETTI GROUP
Today Ferretti Group is on the market with yachts from 30 to 50m, a segment where it is the undisputed leader, with 77

meters which had to look like a motorboat, a yacht with a very slender line, but not necessarily with large volumes. And this is how we built it. With Chopi Chopi the requirements was exactly the opposite. What is cool at CRN is that we build whatever the shipowner wants".
Speaking of strategies, Stefano de Vivo illustrates the plans currently implemented for the shipyard of Ancona. "We have just invested in what we called the Superyacht Yard. We moved the construction of the Pershing flagship, the Pershing 140 and the Riva 50m where for 60 years we build CRN-branded fully-custom megayachts. Today in Ancona we build our yachts from 50 meters up, with each brand referring to dedicated teams, relying on specific know-how and preserving its identity: despite their size, they don’t lose their key feature. We have planned some other investments for the modernization of ground and sea infrastructures".
Even though CRN yachts are made jointly with the customer and although each of them has its own story, vessels like Latona, Cloud 9, Atlante, Saramour, Yalla, Chopi Chopi and J’Ade have the same capacity to reflect the philosophy of the brand. "Underneath their appearance, each yacht is manufactured meticulously. CRN can have a small team in its technical department because it doesn’t need to draw, or rather fully design, the entire megayacht before starting the construction works. We start the construction with a first engineered stage. This allows to fasten the process, without turning down high quality".
THE GREAT REVOLUTION
Lately the shipyard has introduced in the technical department a software to design yachts: now the customer can see the planning of his yacht through 3D diagrams and drawings, which were already available but not on all the general plans of the yacht. Stefano de Vivo explains that "the shipyard is focusing on designing. We want the customer to know and to feel confident that he has a perfect boat in all its aspects, as regards design and systems. This investment not only allows to work better, and to give a greater satisfaction to the customer, but it should also be considered as a training project. Our technicians were accustomed to a different system, they had to learn to draw with this new software, and this unavoidably caused some slowing down, but this is the way towards the company's progress and today we are working in this direction, reaping the relevant benefits".
Nowadays at CRN there are four hulls under construction, of which unluckily I can’t tell much due to owners' privacy reasons. However, Stefano de Vivo gives us some details: "The units include a 60 meters, two 62 meters and one 70 meters. The first will be totally made in aluminium, a particular yacht designed by Nuvolari Lenard both as regards interiors and exteriors, and it will be very fast. It will be the first built in Italy, so large, entirely in aluminium. The idea stems from the yacht owner, who made specific draft, speed and range requests". The two 62 meters are made by Nuvolari Lenard and Omega Architects respectively. The same size for two yachts which embody completely different personalities, characters and styles.
THE CRN’S ONE-OFF CONSTRUCTIONS AND CRN’S IDENTITY
The 70 meters sprouts from a personal idea of the client inspired by the design of the 70-meter She, by Vallicelli Design. "We take this project as a starting point since it was very close to the client’s idea, but the final project will differ from She. Vallicelli, in particular, will be again involved in other projects; we are analysing with him the interiors of a new project, about which you can learn more in the near future".
Stefano de Vivo remarks that "even if Riva 50m is built in Ancona and is a megayacht it shouldn’t be confused with a CRN. It is totally different! Riva 50M is a yacht which should be immediately recognized as a Riva by observing its iconic details. Instead, a CRN is a fully-custom project. Many customers asked me to build big boats under the Riva brand, but I explained them that it doesn’t work like that. If we satisfy these demands we would distort the brand. It is just the marked difference between the construction of a Riva 50m and a CRN that makes possible the coexistence of the two hearts of the shipyard in the same facility, without risking to cause confusion. Riva 50m preserves all the distinctive design features of the Riva boats, despite being a megayacht; above all, it shouldn’t be meant as a custom project, except for the interiors and some details, such as the sunbeds. The difference between a Riva 50m and a CRN megayacht", de Vivo points out, "is the possibility for the owner to create her/his own design".
ENGINEERED DESIGN
CRN works on engineered design, but if they don’t conform to the project required by the client, the shipyard studies a specific cutting-edge solution for layout and features. "Our modus operandi is to propose own projects developed with international renowned design studios. We rely on concept designs and innovative proposals when the owner comes without a specific idea. This is when we offer a wide range of choices. Our team is specialized in the study of specific tailored projects. Our goal, and thus the niche where we stand, is the design of the yacht of dreams, building a pure custom".
Going back to CRN, de Vivo specifies that a CRN yacht reflects the owner’s vision. "We build whatever he wants".
As de Vivo acknowledges, there are few customers with a clear idea of what they want to build. There are few "wise" customers, in terms of design; often when buying the first boat, even if it is a megayacht, since they haven’t a yachting experience, they barely know their needs. In this case we need to have some designs ready to be proposed. And here is where the collaboration with important brands of yacht design comes into play. "We contacted some worldwide renowned designers to develop new projects, which could be built according to our key design guidelines, that is water lines and engineering platform, technical rooms, engine rooms, etc. Today is not easy to find design studios willing to invest in new projects for a shipyard, but we were successful and we are very satisfied with the results".
CRN is a hotbed of "unique pieces", often inspired to lines specifically required by the clients. When CRN built Atlante, it was just the owner to present the idea of the yacht he wanted to build to the shipyard. "CRN is a shipyard where if the client asks what kind of design we can plan, without giving any tip about his tastes or requirements, he almost places us in crisis. Atlante is a very successful project because the client gave us his idea, his source of inspiration was the Mercedes GClass. The idea was then reviewed and modeled by the Nuvolari Lenard design studio and built according to the customer’s desire. CRN respects the owner’s taste and his stylistic requirements, and the project has to be jointly reviewed to find the right balance and the best functioning. With Yalla it was the same story. The owner requested a 73

VERY PRIVATE CUSTOMERS
IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR
Considering the small volumes of megayachts market, it is difficult to build up a specific customer profile. But what Stefano de Vivo manages to identify in CRN customers is their request to remain as much private as possible.
We wondered how yacht owners changed in the last 5 or 10 years. And if the new generation has a different approach to the purchase of a yacht. If it is harder today for a shipyard to deal with the fathers or the sons. Stefano de Vivo explains that the customers are so different that it is difficult to detect a change.
"CRN customers, today and in the past, tend to be families paying great attention to their privacy, as a philosophy of life, not only in relation to the display of their vessel. They keep the yacht only for private use, they don’t charter it. Indeed, if it is true that CRNs are yachts created from their vision, they are lived with the same sentiment as if they were buying a house, an intimate dimension to be kept as such. An exception is represented by the story of Cloud 9, the only CRN built with the idea of making it available for charter. Even if the story tells us that the owner, after the delivery of the yacht, preferred to cancel all the bookings received for the season, keeping his yacht for exclusive use.
"Certainly clients in the past came to the shipyard without their sons. The purchase of the boat, whether it was small or large, was an individual choice. Today it turned into a family affair. The relationship is more complex, since we don’t deal only with the owner, but with all the family members. But this isn’t the only difference: often they are purchasing the first vessel, even if it is a megayacht. This means that neither the father or the sons grew up with the dream or the passion of the sea, and it leads to a normal lack of yachting experience, and thus a poor knowledge of their actual needs.
The CRNs currently under construction are strictly confidential projects. The owners want to protect their privacy. As they protect their house, their family, likewise they require strict confidentiality for their vessel. Even if it is true that at the launch, also with a private ceremony, this is visible to everybody, after the descent to the sea, there is the jealousy for the project by the owner and thus as long as it is possible to hide its lines and details, also to prevent any 'plagiarism', the yacht is covered by 'professional secrecy'".
It's important to understand what kind of yachting experience the owner wants to live with his family. Based on it, CRN with its in-house teams of project managers, project architects, engineers and technical designers work closely with the owner’s project team and the designers to shape the layout and the features. Down the years, CRN team have all learned to listen to what our owners want and to turn those ideas into breathtaking yacht through a winning blend of expertise, creativity, flexibility and reliability and total commitment. 79

small boat, and finally the airplane. It is almost natural: the megayacht comes at the end of this path.
Moreover, also the interest in spaces has changed: today the customers visiting small or large boats are not interested to the engine room. In the past, it was a must. Today customers are focused on the liveability, the beach area, the jacuzzi... Therefore we need to make them understand that the technical areas should not be sacrificed to the benefit of living spaces, since it would undermine the proper operation of systems and plants, to the detriment of the on-board comfort.
Also any bad experience, including personal, should be taken into account. We should be good at educating the market and showing that there isn’t just one use of the vessel, but that it is possible to stay at sea following different lifestyles".
"WHAT IS FUNDAMENTAL AND SHOULD BE CLEAR TO YACHT OWNERS IS THAT SAILING MUST BE COMFORTABLE AND SAFE. AS REGARDS LIFESTYLES AND HABITS, TO EACH THEIR OWN. EVERYBODY IS THE MASTER OF HIS BACKYARD"
We try to make our clients understand that differently from a villas, the yacht is independent in the production of energy. The yacht moves, it is a means of transport. And it moves through and lives in what also the NASA described as the most 'threatening' environment, the salty one".
ENCOURAGE SALES, IS THAT POSSIBLE?
A 360° RELATIONSHIP OF TRUST WITH OUR OWNERS
Statistics indicate a small percentage of UHNWIs who own megayachts, but they should also include those who charter. Stefano de Vivo explains that "if we look at the number of new yachts sold at international level, this may seem low. But we also have to consider who prefers to charter rather than purchasing. At this point, if the charter proves to be a good experience for the family, maybe in a couple of years the customers tend to purchase their own vessel".
CRN builds custom yachts, it is crucial to establish a relationship of trust with the customer such as to access his private sphere, in order to understand how he likes to spend his leisure, how he lives the spaces, what is his idea of yachting experience.
"This is the good of this job, when you earn the customer’s respect. In the design stage, the relationship with the customer is handled by the project manager, a key figure between the technical, the construction and the commercial area working together with the project architects.
Stefano de Vivo draws the attention also to another reason why encouraging sales is such a challenge. "Usually, the yacht is the last purchasing choice by owners, after the residences, the main one, the beach villa, the mountain house, then the 81

THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BROKERS
The yard’s Interiors & Design department vaunts a crack team of world-class architects and designers who support and work together with the client. In the after-sale stage, fully custom and semi-custom constructions, have a dedicated support, comprising 2-3 people, generally those who have supervised the building and who know every detail of that yacht. We have an extensive after-sale service network around the world and a good relation also with the captains.
"We resumed to nurture the relationship with the brokers, all of them; since 2016 we have a great management of the relationships with big brokerage companies, but also with minor players, such as consultants acting on behalf of customers as family office. For the second year we organized for a selected group of brokers a day at the shipyard, an event where we showed our production capacity and managed to explain in detail what we do, what is our current offer. We have an easy relationship with brokers, we aren’t forced to sell".
This is why we organize events addressed to captains, to build with them a personal relationship, which is crucial in the service stage". To create a project jointly with the customer means reviewing and assessing it a thousand times to find the right solution for both sides, that for the shipyard means at a technical level.
"OUR CLIENTS ARE NEVER ORIENTED TO SPECULATIVE PURCHASES, THUS OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH BROKERS ISN’T FOCUSED ON CHOICES BASED ON THE PRICE. ALSO THE RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR SALES FORCE IS PERSONAL AND DAILY: WE PUT AT THE CORE THE HUMAN RELATION"
The development of the idea of the latest 70 meters lasted 13 months. Stefano de Vivo explains that during the creation of the project the yacht owner is attracted by a detail that he saw on another boat, and that he wants to be incorporated. Until the client likes the project, the sale is not concluded, and this could lead to the risk of investing much time and work in the study of a project that will never be built, "but it is for this reason, to prevent situations where the negotiation is just a waste of time, that we only sign nonrefundable letter of intents with clients. It is a way to reduce the risk to waste time and to protect our actual customers who deserve the best attention. All the time we recover from fake negotiations, is time gained for our customers".
"This is why our clients expect from us some flexibility, that is to say the possibility to require changes to the project while works are in progress, except in case of structural barriers or if a price increase or a delay in delivery is expected, issues of which however the customer is informed". 83

THE COLLABORATION WITH DESIGN STUDIOS In addition to the design projects published on the issue of April of Superyacht Digest, Begallta by Lobanov Design, She by Andrea Vallicelli and AlfaRosso by Francesco Paszkowski Design, CRN works constantly in developing new design projects to wide his fleet and to propose to CRN's prospects who come at the shipyard without a clear idea. "The project by Omega Architects was born as an idea of sports yacht. Harrison Eidsgaard proposed the idea of a cutting-edge explorer. And the ingenious project by Nuvolari Lenard, a studio collaborating with us from a long time that helped in the realization of high level yachts, such as Magnifica, Clarena, Azteca and Atlante".
Ferretti Group | The Superyacht Yard in Ancona
THE BRAND EXPERIENCE PHILOSOPHY Ferretti Group is focusing on private events and on the creation of branded lounges and clubs. Stefano de Vivo points out that the brand experience is the most important aspect in the relationship with the customer. "We have strong brands, with clear identities. And the private events or the lounge represent a strategy which allows to perceive the essence of the brand and to live it as an experience. The Riva Lounges allow the customer to get into the brand. The Aquariva moored outside the Gritti hotel in Venice, makes clear the brand positioning to those guests who don’t know it yet. A boat outside the Gritti is better than any business card. Going back to private events we saw that it is true that they are expensive for the company, but they also generate an extraordinary return. Our dealers feel comfortable to invite customers, more than at a vessel show, where the idea of luxury fades away among logistics and organization. As remarked, it all comes back in commercial terms. The last year the customers attending our private preview in Montecarlo, at our famous concert, acquired the 30% of our order intake within two months from the event. Our events are often an expression of power, not just a brand experience. Dealers and customers acknowledge the power of the shipyard, of its organizational and investment capabilities, aspects perceived as safety and reliability by the customer".

n late May, the Monaco Yacht Club hosted some of yachting’s most influential figures. Crew, brokers, naval architects, engineers, and media: there wasn’t a seat left in the iconic waterfront venue as industry movers and shakers descended on the principality for the inaugural edition of the Explorer Yachts Summit. The first event of its kind to focus solely on the expedition side of yachting, guest speakers came from all corners of the sector for a day-long forum dedicated to the challenges of off-the-beatentrack yachting.
Over the last few years, we’ve all heard the news that yachting is no longer about seeing and being seen in glitzy French Riviera ports like Monaco and Cannes. Or at anchor off Italy’s Portofino or
Positano in summer and the harbour of Gustavia on New Year’s Eve in St Barths come winter. An adventurous spirit has invaded today’s crop of yacht Owners and charterers as they seek out new experiences in remote destinations.
With so much of the planet covered in water, it’s no surprise that people are waking up to the fact that there’s a world away from the Mediterranean and the Caribbean to be discovered on a superyacht. Why jostle for space in the crowded old port of Saint-Tropez in the height of the summer season (especially if you’ve been there, done that) when you could be drinking in spectacular, untouched natural beauty in some of the world’s most unchartered territories?
CARIBBEAN / The region has more than 700 islands, islets, reefs and cays. Now on the radar are once-in-a-lifetime experiences in destinations like Greenland, the land of the midnight sun and ethereal Northern Lights. Where the stillness of the water only serves to accentuate the majesty of the icebergs as you encounter the local wildlife such as puffins, seals, walrus and whales. Here, heli-skiing is preferred to jet-skiing - and you’ll find the same across the world in Patagonia.
With a shipbuilding tradition that dates back more than 160 years, spanning fishing vessels, pleasure craft, naval boats, hydrofoils, and even airships, Baglietto has always been at the forefront of innovation. The company founded by Pietro Baglietto in 1854 is a name that has been trusted by some of history’s most important figures: Pope Leo XIII, Guglielmo Marconi, Giacomo Puccini and King Farouk of Egypt.
BAGLIETTO Explorer 43m - The new Sportfisherman version introduced last June, have been worked out to satisfy different requests from the market. This version is thought for an Owner who likes to enjoy fishing or sailing with a small boat.
The tip of South America is the gateway to yachting adventures in Antarctica, where you’ll take footsteps on a part of the earth very few have before you.
But expedition yachting doesn’t have to always involve wearing thermals and the pristine diving and rich cultural heritage of destinations such as Papua New Guinea and Raja Ampat in Indonesia are also drawing more and more vessels south of the equator, as is the French flavour of islands such as Vanuatu and Tahiti. The timeless beauty of Western Australia’s Kimberley region, where you cruise deep into the heart of the Australian Outback, is another newly discovered superyacht frontier deep in the Southern Hemisphere.
May’s sold-out forum in Monaco helped demonstrate the extent to which yachting’s traditional borders have changed – and not only geographically, but also in terms of external design, onboard features, environmental consciousness, and expedition expertise. In turn, the world’s leading shipyards are responding to these new demands, designing vessels equipped for world cruising without compromising one inch on the seven-star luxury their loyal legion of clients has come to expect from their yachts.
Each new build yacht to leave its La Spezia yard bears the brand's famous seagull logo, which has become synonymous with not only those quintessential ‘Made in Italy’ characteristics - such as passion and style - but also attention to detail and reliability. And, when you’re planning ocean-going adventures that will see you far from civilisation for long stretches of time, this is exactly the type of reputation that provides the impenetrable foundations you need.
Unveiled at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show, and one of two concepts in Baglietto’s Exp-Line series (the other a 48m Explorer designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design), the 43m Explorer Type really looks and feels ready to head off on expeditions to all corners of the globe. Which was exactly the mandate. “This 43m Baglietto Explorer was conceived with a view to creating a real Explorer Yacht capable of ensuring maximum seaworthiness, comfort and safety in any and all sea conditions,” the shipbuilders said in a statement.
Milan-based yacht architects, Studio Santa Maria Magnolfi, turned to more than superyacht heritage to design a vessel that can be used all year round, no matter the season nor the destination. The design duo, Federico Santa Maria and Valentina Magnolfi, paid particular attention to the special functions and features of workboats and warships.
Inside, there’s an abundance of natural light which emphasises the extreme level of comfort and sophisticated, natural elegance on board. The intelligent layout enables the Owner and guests to explore the furthest corners of the globe without sacrificing any luxury. On the main deck, the full-beam salon has floor-to-ceiling windows and a “winter garden” that links the salon to the aft-area.
The result is a dark grey hull that recalls the dependability of navy vessels and a sleek, minimalist superstructure dominated by oversized glazed windows that create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior environments. After all, when you’re cruising some of the most breathtaking regions in the world, you want to be able to take in the views from as many vantage points as possible.

What stands out so much about this 43m Baglietto Explorer concept is the versatility and practicality of the design, such an essential component of a yacht engineered to travel through all conditions and climates. On the upper deck, the helipad folds away when not in use to become an additional outdoor area (and a wonderful venue to host an event), while, in unfavourable weather conditions, the main deck Winter Garden space can be closed off to become additional interior space, as can the upper level al fresco dining area. At the time of going to print, the yard had also just unveiled a sportsfisherman version of the concept, with provisions for a 28’ sportsfisherman vessel and 6m rescue tender to be stored on the Upper Deck.
Caterpillar engines, and provisions for storage (including cold rooms) ensure safety no matter how far from land you travel. The gym, spa and Turkish bath are spaces sure to be welcome on both long and short voyages, as are the multiple observation areas. Once you’ve arrived at your destination? Under the helipad lies the garage. Open its side wings to reveal an array of tender and toys, including an amphibious craft and two jet-skis. There’s also a swim platform to enjoy in warmer climates. The finishing touches hint at the far-flung anchorages this yacht is destined to visit: ancient Moroccan straw mats, Indian silk fabrics, Italian marbles and other exotic woods. The display cabinets on board are waiting to be filled with precious artefacts and memories collected from travels undertaken with her new Owner.
What about the practicalities, so essential for expedition yachting? A range of 5600 nautical miles at 11 knots, robust

Another version presents the project with a basketball court. As said, it is a boat that can be experienced in many ways, in completely different climates and places without forgetting the issues of eco-sustainability. For this reason the design includes some specific premises for sustainable waste management. As to the external lines, they are also a signal of innovation: the young duo of the design studio Santa Maria Magnolfi have done a remarkable job in interpreting the history of our brand, which finds its roots in the military tradition. The result is a creation of a true Explorer Yacht with a strong navigability in all weather conditions, in maximum comfort and in total safety".
"We are very satisfied with this project in which we have believed a lot. I am also very happy for the positive feedback we are receiving from the market. I think that this Explorer is a clear expression of the construction possibilities and the high qualitative potential of Baglietto. The key word for this model is flexibility: thanks to its incredible volumes, this project can easily lend itself to experimenting with new ideas and different requests that may come from clients. We introduced a version with helipad at the last Monaco Yacht Show, but in order to meet the needs of a customer, we modified the stern so to contain a fishing boat and relevant cold rooms to store fish. 95

July 2019
Your office is based in Milan, the birthplace of some of the world's most exquisite design objects. What are some of your more surprising, or unusual sources of inspiration for projects such as the 43m Baglietto Explorer?
Your philosophy is that "deliberate simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." Can you elaborate a little on how this manifests itself in your concepts? SSMM: History has always taught us that when something is well made using just what is necessary (and not more!) it lasts much longer, takes longer to age and looks good almost forever. We also strongly believe that yachts have to be seen in harmony with the environment they live in. For this reason, sleek and rigorous shapes can coexist in an easier way.
SSMM: Milan nowadays is rich with inspiration. In addition to everything linked with navigation, we try to take something from everything we see: from civil architecture to product design, fashion… without ever overlooking inspiration found in oil platforms or control towers! For this particular concept, you have studied and built upon the "stylistic heritage of yachts," of course, but also workboats and warships. How has this translated into the final design?
What are some of the specific challenges involved in explorer yacht design when compared to standard motor yacht design, and how do you overcome these? How do you see the style evolving in the future?
SSMM: Workboats and warships find the origins of their shapes deeply in their functions. This way, besides working on lines that come from the “stylistic heritage of yachts”, we used them to shape something where its utility came before we knew how we would like the yacht to appear.
SSMM: Our design process is always born from functionality which defines the guidelines of how the yacht will look. This aspect of the design process is particularly emphasised when the project is a true explorer yacht. There are a number of features that have to be considered from the very beginning: such as the possibility to host a helipad, an off-road vehicle, cold rooms suitable for long periods far from inhabited coasts, a spare parts workshop… On top of this, you have to factor in all the technical features related to the style of navigation the Owner would like to undertake: for example, if they want to visit poles in summer or Alaska in winter. We believe the evolution of yachting is actually following two guidelines: one more utilitarian, the other more exhibitionist. An experienced Owner knows what he wants!

THE REASON WHY | EXTRA YACHTS
GOING THE EXTRA MILE
AFTER THE SUCCESSFUL DEBUT OF THE EXTRA76 AT LAST YEAR’S CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL, PALUMBO SUPERYACHTS IS PREPARING TO PREMIERE EVEN MORE MODELS IN THE EXTRA RANGE COME THIS SEPTEMBER’S YACHT SHOW SEASON.
F
rancesco Carbone doesn’t miss a beat when asked what the DNA of an ISA Yacht is. ‘We are definitely known for certain aesthetical features,” the General Manager answers, adding that along with advanced technical know-how and worldrenowned Italian craftsmanship, many of the Ancona-based shipyard’s fleet can be recognized for its distinctive lines. “If you look at our yachts over 30m, they are all characterised by those big side arches that connect the hull to the superstructure; a continuity that extends from the beach platform all the way up to the sundeck”, he explains. “You can definitely spot an ISA Yacht from a distance”, he continues with a grin.
Which only serves to make the company’s new EXTRA range stand out even more. There are none of those grand, sweeping curves to both the left and right of the decks, and the design - the brainchild of Francesco Guida - has a distinctly monochrome look and feel that he says was inspired by killer whales. But this was all very much part of the plan. “The new EXTRA range is completely different to anything we’ve done before,” Carbone continues. “It’s a radical new design, and that’s exactly the reason we christened it EXTRA,” he explains. “Extra because it is different, because it’s extraordinary, because it’s extra-large compared to boats of the same length, there’s extra space compared to these boats as well. It’s a series that gives you so much more for the length of the yacht, and that’s exactly how the name came about”.

The first yacht in the series, the 23m EXTRA 76, had its world premiere at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. Initial feedback was “positive,” Francesco says, and the yacht has been sold to a European Owner and will be based in the South of France. As the 2019 yacht show season approaches, the yard is preparing to unveil three new models, all sold: EXTRA 86FAST and EXTRA 93 at Cannes (10-15 September) and EXTRA 130 Alloy at Monaco (25-28 September), along with the largest yacht it has delivered this year, M/Y DRAGON, an 80m Columbus Classic.
performs in the US. Obviously, with this sale, we’ve had a very positive first experience and I honestly believe the potential for this series is very interesting in the USA. We will know more by the end of the year”, he says. With a top speed of 30 knots, the 86Fast definitely delivers on one of the criteria Carbone believes separates yacht owners from both sides of the pond: “American clients are much more focused on speed compared to their European counterparts”, he explains, adding that the other main distinction is draft (“In the Mediterranean, you can access nearly all of the best marinas with no regard for the draft, which is not the case in the Caribbean”, he comments).
Of all the models, it is the EXTRA 86 that he predicts will be the best seller of the range. “We see a growing interest in the 86 because it’s a little bit longer and so you can get more space in certain areas compared to the 76”, he explains. The 86Fast, he excitedly tells me, has already been sold to an American client and will be delivered to Florida right after the Cannes Yachting Festival, where she will be displayed at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (30 October – 3 November). “Cannes, Monaco and Fort Lauderdale: the EXTRA range will be present at the three major shows of the year!” Carbone understands just how valuable such exposure on both sides of the Atlantic is for the new series. “I’m quite curious to see how EXTRA

design and features and after that, we started to build the 76”, he continues. “We wanted to do something different, and I think Guida is a guy that does things differently. He absolutely stands out from the competition”.
No matter your nationality, however, there’s definitely no argument that the EXTRA range delivers exceptional volumes for its size.
“You get the form and comfort of larger boats in a smaller size, so it’s the concept of a superyacht packaged into a 24m yacht”, Carbone concurs. He names the cockpit in the 76 and 86 as his preferred spaces on board. “The area is wider in terms of square meters than a 35m boat, which is something that no other yacht has. For me, that’s the most important feature”.
With other series such as the ISA range (37m+) and the Columbus range (40m+), as well as parent company Palumbo Superyachts’ other shipyard Mondomarine, Carbone says that there are currently no plans to build a larger yacht than the EXTRA 130 Alloy. “We don’t want to overlap, so at the moment we will stop at 130”, he says. Of course, that’s open for negotiation should the performance of the range dictate so. But, for a yard whose motto is ‘Pushing the Limits of our Industry,’ there’s plenty more innovation in the pipeline. “We are preparing to announce another project that is quite different to anything else under the ISA brand, so keep your fingers crossed for that”.
Carbone explains that the series came about because “we needed something small to target those markets not yet ready for larger yachts, so clients can grow with us”. And, as with many of life’s most successful business stories, the meeting with yacht designer Francesco Guida came about entirely by chance – a case of being in the right place in the right time. “About two years ago, Francesco, Giuseppe Palumbo and I ended up at the same event. We struck up a conversation about a new project involving a smaller range of yachts”, he explains. The seed planted, Guida went away and came up with an idea. “Then, we went back and forward with the

What have been some of the design/technical challenges with the EXTRA range and how have you overcome them?
EXTRA RANGE AT CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL AND MONACO YACHT SHOW 2019
"Combining the largest volumes (for the length) with the highest fuel efficiency was quite a challenge. Thanks to a great team of talented naval architects, we managed to deliver".
Like the EXTRA 76, the three new models set to be unveiled at September’s yacht shows are all characterised by wide internal and external volumes, a low consumption-torange ratio, and the feeling of being at one with nature thanks to oversized glass panelling. EXTRA 86 has the capacity to sleep eight guests in four cabins, all en-suite, including a fullbeam master. The quiet, easy to manoeuvre IPS propulsion onboard the 86FAST allows this version of the yacht to reach top speeds of 30knots. With the volume and comfort that you would expect from a yacht larger in size, the EXTRA 93 is setting the standard for owner expectations for yachts in the 100-foot category. 28.4m in length, she can comfortably accommodate ten guests in five cabins, all en-suite.
Where do you see this range going? Where do you plan to take it to?
"The EXTRA series will expand in style, dimensions and functions as we see the great potential and unexplored territories in this range". The motto of the EXTRA series is ‘Always a Step Ahead.’ What does that mean? How does EXTRA ensure it is always are one step ahead in the yachting industry?
"Coming up with new ideas is essential to success and I would also add that innovation is critical to the business's existence. We strive to inject fresh ideas into the business on a regular basis to stand out from the competition".

The full-beam master is on the main deck. The semidisplacement yacht is also equipped with Volvo Penta IPS engines and her maximum speed of 18 knots (15 cruising) is done at low consumption. The aluminium EXTRA 130 Alloy has been designed as the ultimate entertainer: plenty of al fresco socializing areas on the upper deck (including multiple seating areas, sundeck, a bar and dining area, and TV), as well as an airy and spacious interior, where the main saloon’s floor-toceiling windows are guaranteed to provide an incredible backdrop to any gathering. For even more fun, a garage for tenders and toys is located in the transom. Five cabins - four on the lower deck and the full-beam master on the main deck - complete the sleeping arrangements. Other specs include twin MAN engines, a top speed of 17 knots (15 cruising) and a 2,500 NM range at 12 knots. A photovoltaic system is an optional feature.

Q&A
Can you tell us more about your collaboration with Palumbo Superyachts? How did it come about and how do you work together? Have you been involved in the EXTRA range from the beginning? "Working on this project, we had the possibility to share some ideas about a new range of motor yachts that have, as main features, a classical design, big interior spaces, semi-planing hulls to guarantee low fuel consumption, and innovative layouts. All, of course, combined with the highquality level of construction typical of larger ISA Yachts. For this last (and most important reason) we came up with the name of EXTRA for this new range because the series combines the standards of superyachts with smaller dimensions (76'-130').

The killer whale: the inspiration behind the design of the EXTRA range (Pg. 111) Š Extra Yachts - EXTRA 130 ALLOY
Can you elaborate on some of the inspiration behind the design of the EXTRA range?
of the century, once we sold the Company, I collaborated with Magnum Marine, Ilver 41'58', Tornado 38'-50'and Arcadia Yachts 58'-115'. Today, we design the interiors of the Azimut "S" range and collaborate with Palumbo Superyachts, as well as with Cantiere delle Marche, Otam, Cetera and Magnum Marine. My studio has three sections: engineering, exterior design and interior architecture.
We have taken inspiration from one of the kings of the sea: the killer whale. Strong and powerful but elegant at sea. Also, their shape recalls, in a way, the design of these yachts. What are your favourite details of the EXTRA series of yachts?
It is not really a detail, but instead the overall idea of having combined a classical design with unique and new layouts. Together, this creates an original and innovative range of yachts. Can you tell us more about your background? Did you always want to design yachts? How did you end up in the industry?
I have been in the industry for 33 now! I was very young when I started out: at 22, I graduated in naval architecture, designing several Italcraft initially. After that, I spent about 15 years as the general manager and shareholder (along with founder Mr Giovanni Jannetti), of Sanlorenzo Yachts. I designed the Sanlorenzo classic range 62'-100'. THE FLEXIBLE ENGINEERING THINKING OF NAVALHEAD
THE YEAR OF DIFFERENT THINGS AND THE RETURN OF ITALIAN CLIENTS THE TRIESTE-BASED STUDIO TELLS US ABOUT THEIR CURRENT UNUSUAL COMPLEX PROJECTS. NAVALHEAD IS NOW WORKING ON 4 SINGULAR PROJECTS: A MARINA RESORT MADE BY HOUSEBOATS, A RESTAURANT-SHIP, ONE CUSTOM SAILING YACHT AND ONE 38M MOTOR YACHT. WHAT HAVE ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT PROJECTS IN COMMON IN ADDITION TO BEING ONE-OF-A-KIND? THEY ARE ALL DEVELOPED FOR ITALIAN CLIENTS.
W
the Rina Class and certified as it was a new build. Technically speaking, it is a motor vessel, a passenger ship, a river boat for recreational use. Our client bought the hull in August 2018 and had it transported in Trieste via Rotterdam. We started work in September, the ship's interiors, as required by law, are built with anti-flame materials, including linoleum floors. The difficulty was to find nice materials that were also suitable for safe and secure working environment according to the maritime regulations. The ship is built on two decks: at aft and bow there are technical areas, while the space guests will be on a small terrace at bow, on a wide terrace at aft and on the whole upper deck equipped with umbrellas and lounge bar".
e met the team of Andrea Agrusta, Navalhead, a naval engineering firm based in Trieste. A group of seven professionals working together today on various projects that the studio is developing on behalf of private clients, shipyards and design studios. The specific design field of the studio, founded by Andrea in 2010, ranges from large yachts to small submarines, passing through a truly unique project that involves the construction of a marina, an exclusive tourist resort, entirely composed of houseboats, which draws inspiration from Dutch and Canadian floating villages. Andrea Agrusta tells us how to tackle the nautical sector today and in particular illustrates the projects they are working on. It describes this year 2018/2019 as a particular period for the Studio; the projects they are working on are all commissioned by Italian clients, something that hasn't happened for a long time. All projects have a unique story, as well as being different in style and design.
Tell us about the marina. What kind of project is it?
AA: "We are working on the first resort ever built in Italy on houseboats. Abroad houseboats already exist, in Germany, in Holland... The regulations in these countries allow this kind of builds. In Italy they are not allowed: in our country, all floating platforms must be registered and certified as a boat, and therefore have to comply with the relevant regulations. Technically speaking, the houseboats are real boats, they only have a superstructure in the shape of a house. The resort has seen an investment of about 40 million euros and offers many services, including swimming pools and tennis courts. It is located in Lignano Sabbiadoro, not on the sea side but on the Tagliamento river side. It will be a 4-star category, it will count 164 houseboats and will open in July with the first 20 houseboats, already all booked".
On which project are you particularly involved in this period?
Andrea Agrusta: "A few days ago we launched a 40-meter vessel, the socalled Clubhouse of the marina we are building for Europa Group, a well-known Italian tourist group present in Italy with locations in Bibione and Lignano Sabbiadoro. It will be used as a floating restaurant, an elegant space available to all the guests of the houseboats. The restaurant-ship will also set sail for excursions along the river Tagliamento, allowing for a visit to the historical city centre of Latisana, with its Neo-classic style cathedral, or to sample a glass of local wine in one of the many cellars scattered throughout the Friulian inland, the perfect way to get in touch with the local tradition. Moored inside the Marina Azzurra resort, Emerald River, that’s the name of the restaurant-ship, will be able to accomodate up to 300 guests, offering a gourmet self-service, a formula the company is already offering within its other hotels.
What can you tell us about these houseboats?
AA: "The 164 houseboats are all the same, a project developed in an almost industrial way. Each unit is equipped with a small electric boat that will allow guests to navigate along the river. From the landscape point of view, the Region had requested a project with low environmental impact, inspired by a lagoon style. We therefore decided to create identical buildings, in harmony with the landscape. We have designed two versions, one small and one larger. We are currently building the small version, it was the most convenient at cost-benefit level. The main spaces include a large dining room with kitchen, two cabins - one double and one twin - and a large bathroom. There is also a second small living area with a sofa bed. So in total every houseboat can accomodate 4 + 2 guests".
How was this project born?
AA: "The restaurant-ship is a refit project. There was no time to build a new boat. We found the hull in Germany, in Koblenz. A building of '68, which we completely refitted, it was gutted all over, cut and rebuilt from scratch, put back in 115

How was designing a marina resort?
How will living on a houseboat be like?
AA: "For us it was a really interesting project. In 2015 we presented our idea and were selected for the work. The project was therefore commissioned to our studio, which started to develop it under all aspects: design, architecture, engineering, interiors. We also worked in close collaboration with the land construction part and with the marine system: we studied piers, moorings, walkways ... As to the development of the houseboat, under technical terms, it is a simple project: it is a ten-meter catamaran. The real challenge was optimizing the project: we had to build 164 houseboats, so saving even a little on a single unit meant saving a considerable amount at level of the entire project. In terms of time too, we designed a smart assembly system, the same goes for transport: houseboats are printed in fiberglass in Udine. They are divided in half and transported semi-furnished, ready to be positioned along the river by a crane, a sort of launch , we can say, or better, 164 launches!".
AA: "The experience at sea, to be beautiful and pleasant, must be first of all safe but also comfortable. A little is sufficient to live it badly. There have been many points we have had to evaluate to ensure safety and comfort. Not all guests of the marina's houseboats will be boaters - people used to life at sea - so we made sure that the houseboats could give the comfort of a home with the security of a real boat, and all this in only 10 meters". How is the comfort on board determined?
AA: "In all our projects, even those relating to larger boats, we always conduct a check to assess the level of the boat's roll. There is an engineering index called MSI, Motion Sickness Index, which allows us to estimate the onboard passenger comfort level, given a certain motion and after a certain amount of time. Not really a nonsense if you have to spend a vacation at sea. If the motion of the boat is very slow, it can make you sick and it is dangerous. A very fast motion is not dangerous because it means that the boat reacts quickly, but it certainly causes discomfort. But the boat must move, it cannot stand still. It is necessary to mediate the characteristics of the boat so that the roll is well supported by our ear, on average a motion of 7/8 seconds per roll is perfect".
What were the most critical aspects of the project?
AA: "We faced several critical aspects! The project is very simple as a boat, but as a living space it is quite complex. Each houseboat develops itself on two decks, for a total of 60 square meters. Two are the real complexities: on one side the industrialization of the project, on the other the integration with the land works, the risk of high tide or the flood of the river. As to safety, we came up with a double foamed hull, so that the structure of the houseboat was not put into danger from any object, logs for example, carried by the river".

preliminary design phase, the hull is already built, the ship will go into water by next summer. It is an entirely custom build, 67 feet long (21m), an all aluminium construction, a really special project!".
AA: "From a structural and material point of view, I have to say that, not without effort, we were able to make them build in fiberglass, and not in wood or iron, as the owners initially requested. We explained that the construction in order to be registered as a boat, to be in line with the regulations and be safe, to be built quickly and in large numbers, had to be built in fiberglass. For the roof we have instead chosen a plastic material that looks like a bamboo cane aesthetically, it also works as insulation and allows freshness in the interior".
Why makes it so special?
AA: "It is an extremely spacious boat, but very sporty! It reminds of the old way of sailing, reviewed in a modern key". Why a custom product for a 21m boat?
AA: "Why do you go to the tailor for a custom-made dress when you can buy a very good product in the shops? The answer is because you want a unique product, a different object, designed just for you, able to reflect your needs 100%, from shapes to aesthetics, from performance to spaces, up to the sailing equipment. Our client is a sailor, he wanted a boat designed around him. He has precise ideas and what the market offers as a standard product, does not fit his style of navigation".
How are the interiors made?
AA: "For the interiors we have created special solutions in PVC and chosen pastel colors. To recall the river theme, we have also included parts in bleached wood. We wanted to remember the trunks that the river - romantically - carries and abandon along its banks. Even the exteriors are a reference to the lagoon. We opted for pastel colors but with brighter shades, we wanted them to remember the typical houses of the Venetian islands, such as Burano for example". What other projects are you working on?
AA: "This year, after ten years, we have been asked to develop a project for a sailboat. I am really very happy. The sailing market has slowed down so much in these latest years that for us, engineers and designers, it had practically disappeared. The project that we are developing is for a direct client, a contact that we received from a yard for which we worked in the past but for motor boats. We have just completed the

Last week we received a request for a submarine which was able to dive down to depth of 30m, equipped with an electric motor and to be used for scientific purpose. Today you need to be as flexible as possible and able to face any challenge. In addition, word of mouth counts a lot. It is very different from ten years ago when you could choose which projects to work on, the yachting sector went so well that you even refused projects or applied crazy prices. Today you have to know how to work well, very well I mean, and immediately, and to cost the right price. If you're wrong, you're out!".
AA: "Apart from some trawler motor-yachts and speedboats we have designed for a Brazilian shipyard, in collaboration with the Italian Architect Ferragni, we are working on the new flagship of the Italian yard Maori. A 38m yacht, a really complex project, currently under construction in Olbia. A kind of project very different from the current largest Maori (24m). The new flagship will be a semi-displacement yacht with a 10m beam. The hull is currently being infused. It will probably be presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival next year. For this yacht we have developed the basic engineering - dimensions, hull and engines - and are now supporting the yard's team as project management during the construction phase. One of our engineers will be on site to follow the whole construction. The exteriors are designed by Marco Ciampa, the interiors by Alessandro Pulina".
Are you going to also design boats in the future?
AA: "We want to limit our scope to our core expertise, to what we can do well. We do not want situations of conflict with architectural firms, which are clients for us. As to the design of the sailboat we are working on, it is a different story. We have designed so many in the past that we felt confident to design it. The same is true for the resort and the houseboats. It was such a complex project that we had to develop the design. But if we talk about designing motor boats, we prefer to work alongside designers as engineers, as we did with Alberto Mancini for Dominator, and as we are now doing with Marco Ciampa for Maori. I think an engineer must be able to do everything, but limit himself to his field. After all, even for an architect it is better not to improvise engineer!".
Does your collaboration with Dominator continue?
AA: "Of course, it does! We are working on the development of a 38/40m project. It will be proposed in two versions, designed for two different types of client". What is your impression of today's nautical sector?
AA: "Today we have a lot of projects and are working at full speed. We are a young team, we like to face any challenge. In this way it is more fun and stimulating. We are working on a project for a 5-seater submarine. We have already built a 3-seater, it is not a luxury product for megayachts, but it is still an object costing 200-400 thousand Euros. It can dive

The luxury of the most highly-evolved craftsmanship manifests in the new Outdoor collection, which Luxury Living Group presented at the Milan Furniture Fair last April 2019. A rebirth in terms of aesthetics and design, starting with the details: sequences of interwoven outdoor cord, solid sapele mahogany frames and refined cushions light up unexpected corners of the garden of every elegant Italian home, whilst steel, Carrara marble, teak and tempered glass offer new poolside perspectives. An emotional journey that, reading between the lines of the collection, captures the symbiotic relationship between man and nature, placing it within a crystallised, ambitiously perfect, universe. WING | In a wilderness atmosphere, the welcoming, geometric design of the Wing outdoor collection is an invitation to immerse yourself in nature. The product’s evolvement is evident in the contamination between garden and fine quality materials, such as the interwoven cord covering an aluminium frame to form outdoor sofas and armchairs (in the versions navy blue, white-silver or forest green). The backrest cushioning is emblazoned with a series of striped, floral print or simply plain fabrics and, on request, with custom embroidery. Extra-clear tempered glass tops and slender frames enhance the table and bar seats in the Wing Metal line, rounded off with a sophisticated 60’s vintage touch, ideal for furnishing exteriors with style, elegance and functionality.
CATALINA | Essential, polished wooden surfaces create outdoor furniture with a bold personality. The mahogany frame sofa forms a silhouette punctuated by elegant chrome-plated joints while the reclining sunbed is embellished by the highly original bolster headrest with removable cover. Comfort and refined aesthetics reveal a contemporary project comprising armchair, chaise longue, table, chair, pouf and coffee table. These unique pieces are customisable, provide outstanding high performance and pay tribute to Italy’s manufacturing excellence, forming a distinctive collection that is ideal for furnishing the most prestigious yachts.

CREATING SYSTEMS FOR THE YACHT OWNERS’ DELIGHT
ANCONA-BASED LEADING COMPANY IN THE A/V AND IT INTEGRATION, MAINLY WITHIN THE YACHTING SECTOR BUT ALSO WITH A WORLD-RENOWNED REPUTATION IN THE FASHION WORLD, VIDEOWORKS GLOBALLY OPERATES THROUGH ITS OFFICES IN ITALY, A SUBSIDIARY IN THE DUTCH CAPITAL, WITH PARTNERS ALL OVER THE WORLD, INCLUDING SOUTH AMERICA, THE CARIBBEAN AND CHINA.
V
ideoworks, international leader in the integration of audio/video, entertainment, domotic and IT systems, is a continuously growing entity with a turnover exceeding 14 million Euros in 2018 and more than 70 employees. The expansion of the Group abroad is significant: a branch in Holland, Videoworks Europe BV, in Aalsmeer, in the heart of the Dutch shipyard district, and a company, Videoworks of the Americas, based in Fort Lauderdale, melting pot of overseas yachting.
Videoworks collaborates with the most important leading European and Italian shipyards in the construction of yachts ranging from 35 to more than 100m. In Italy the company mainly works with Ferretti Group (for which it made the systems for the new Riva 50m M/Y Race, 79m CRN 135, Pershing 140 and Custom Line), with Benetti (for the Giga Yachts' trilogy - the latest yachts exceeding 100m - FB 272, FB 277 and M/Y Spectre), with Palumbo Superyachts (80m M/Y Dragon), with Baglietto and Rossinavi, to mention just a few. Big names such as Feadship, Sunseeker and Southern Wind "enhance" Videoworks' portfolio, making the company an international reference.

Videoworks doesn’t just create products for its exclusive customers, but fully customized systems, tailor-made to satisfy the Shipowner’s needs, his specific requirements and desires. There isn’t a system identical to another, since each individual is unique. The company's professionals have to interpret the demands and suggest the best solution, always the most reliable, user friendly and highperforming.
Videoworks can offer a complete system architecture, equipped with hardware and software, controllable by touch panels. The process starts with the listening of the specifications required by the Customer, then comes the concept study and the design phase. Once it has been approved, the team starts to work on integration and moves to the practical realization of the system, which is then installed on board. All the stages of the process are carried out in-house, inside the technological laboratory, the so-called Officina, without the need of outsourcing any step. From the realization of racks to their thorough wiring, up to the final tests and the trial of hardware and software. 140
Videoworks developed for Ferretti Group the revolutionary Music Hull, an innovative solution that allows you to listen to highdefinition music underwater Š Ferretti Group, Pershing 8x
The product manufactured by Videoworks is already perfectly working, tested and ready to be installed on board, according to the timetables and the production plans of the customers.
The company is currently working on more than 70 projects simultaneously (in 2018 the projects were more than 50) for boats with an average length of about 60 meters. With its know-how and more than 20 years of experience in its industry, Videoworks can meet any need. Just to give an example: with the App entirely developed in-house by the software engineers working in Videoworks’ sister company, “Itworks”, users can control A/V - Domotic and IT systems both by touch screen or latest generation personal device (iOS or Android), but also by “old style” remote control, preferred option of people reluctant to modern technology.
The company is able to turn the thoughts and desires of its customer into reality. If the customer loves music and wants to organize some parties on board, Videoworks will recommend a system made up of specific products aimed at generating a powerful and clear sound; if the customer prefers a premium cinema for his family, because he likes to watch TV with his children, Videoworks will be able to find the right monitor and to study the perfect sound for that environment, and to carry out a lighting design study to get the best setting. Exactly, Videoworks with a dedicated team also handles light engineering, to support the Customer, its technicians, the architects and the interior designers. Since the use of light is becoming increasingly important within the framework of the projects, to know how to create atmospheres and scenarios which can be controlled by the Videoworks App from different devices is a value added to increase wellbeing and comfort on board. From the selection of lights and perspectives, to evaluations and 3D simulations, going through the creation of renderings, diagrams and sizing, Videoworks offers a professional and reliable service. Nowadays it is quite obvious to offer domotics and a basic audio/video system; what makes the difference, as the company’s CTO, Maurizio Minossi, remarks “are the services that the company can provide and the comfort it can create on board”. Services like constant aftersale assistance, maintenance agreements and specific systems upgrades, continuous training for crews (which are often subject to a large turnover), to know how to choose, with the customer, the most suitable solution to meet his needs.
Therefore, the relationship with yacht owners and his representatives becomes increasingly closer. It is not unusual that some yacht owners fly to Ancona with their private jets to visit Videoworks' headquarters just for few hours to test, for example, the sound of a specific product that the company has recommended for their boat. During these visits clients can also experience first hand the latest technologies developed by the company. Just to give an example of Videoworks' latest technologies, the company has developed some systems thanks to which walls covered with marble, glass or aluminum (just to mention a few of the many materials tested) are capable of sounding due to little invisible shakers. It deals with a sort of artificial intelligence called “mood meters”, capable of mapping the customer’s emotions and mood and consequently to set lights and music accordingly, so to make the owner - or his guests - feel comfortable and instill positivity and well-being.

This compact integrated system offers high quality performance in production yachts as well, in order to meet the specific needs of the market and provide the made-by-Videoworks experience. The great challenge was ensuring high quality performance even in limited technical spaces. With some shipyards, among the most important and famous in the world, in particular collaborating with Engineering, Videoworks studies unique solutions, also in exclusivity, so that each system is unique and gives added value and attractiveness to the yacht.
The same goes for Captains and ETOs. The relationship built with the professionals of Videoworks is based on trust, since they are aware of the short lead times for their demands. In fact, the company is structured to support its customers both by dedicated helpdesks, its offices and service centers scattered worldwide, and remotely (in this case with very fast troubleshooting times). The responsiveness is very important and characterizing for the company. Indeed, Videoworks has always been known on the market due to its reliability and capability to respond to the demands. This feature is strengthened by the new American company, created to ensure also to the North-American and Caribbean customers an immediate technical and operational service and assistance “Made by Videoworks”, thanks to the dedicated team based in Fort Lauderdale composed of 10 technicians.
The technological sector where the company operates is very challenging and Videoworks always has to look forward and to be constantly updated. Technology changes very fast and the customers are increasingly informed and wishful to have the latest products available on the market. So, what should we expect in the near future? This is what Eng. Menossi tells us: “On-board Internet as fast as at home, increasingly professional WiFi networks, streaming services and digital libraries that the yacht owner is accustomed to use at home, available also on board, the possibility to control all the systems by personal devices and an excellent audio quality”. All of this without overlooking navigation safety. Videoworks, with its know how offers a network protection from the web threats, limiting harmful contents (including viruses) and phishing. But Videoworks goes further and has a breakthrough innovation, that will be introduced in a world preview at the next Monaco Yacth Show, scheduled from September 25 to 28 of this year.
As Mauro Pellegrini, Founder, CEO & Sales Director of the Company, says: “this exclusive Videoworks’ amplifier, that no one else has on the market, revolutionizes the whole A/V - IT integration industry. Let’s forget the space usually reserved to rack rooms and just imagine a tiny, powerful and high-performing product. Add to space saving on board a remote, smart and easy maintenance, as well as the constant support by Videoworks. It is something extraordinary! And as regards the performance, I invite everybody to our stand to experience first hand its unprecedented quality”. The constantly growing Videoworks Group has only one mission: to create innovative, reliable and user-friendly systems, for the delight of the yacht owner and of their beloved, with the guarantee of an ongoing assistance: wherever they are navigating in the world, they will always have a Videoworks professional standing by their side, ready to solve any problem.

Take a leisurely lunch, enjoy time on the sun deck and watch the fantastic scenery that gradually reveals itself between the fjords. Along the way the yacht will stop to admire the stunning natural landscape and breathe the delightfully refreshing air. The 7.95m Merry Fisher tow tender will also be available to get fully up close and investigate the beautiful waterfalls, tumbling cliffside. The stunning scenery is all around you 360° and it often feels it is enveloping you as if in an embrace. Once at the head of the fjord, the crew will launch the jet skis and other toys for those wishing to explore the fjord and get closer to nature. Nearing the rocky walls you will discover new perspectives, the feeling of being so small compared to the mountains increases and the sky will appear even further away.
Once the afternoon watersports and activities are complete, DAYDREAM will be your haven in the midst of magnificent nature, where even sunset is late to arrive enabling you to enjoy the incredible, breathtaking views as long as possible. In the atmospheric mid-summer Scandinavian light, guests can enjoy a delicious al fresco - time will seem endless, it means you are completely relaxing.
On the second day, after a delicious breakfast prepared by the first-class chef, DAYDREAM leaves Forsand to reach Jørpeland taking approximately 1.5 hours. Captain Damion will outline all the possible activities: hiking up Norway’s iconic Pulpit Rock -guided by DAYDREAM's experienced crew, visiting Landa Park - a fascinating prehistoric village, for a journey back in time, enjoying a horse trek or discovering local walks near the anchorage.
The magic has just started! This is the time to indulge your adventurous side: pick from various water sports activities, kayaking, paddle boarding, wakeboarding or enjoying a pleasant stroll in Lysebotn, a village in Forsand, where small colourful villas stand out amidst the thousand shades of green of the landscape. In Lysebotn, active guests may wish to hike or try tandem paragliding, an exhilarating opportunity to see the fjords and landscape below from a completely different viewpoint. The paraglider is launched upwards by a winch boat and a professional tandem pilot is there to guide you. Don't panic, the only risk you might run is not being able to launch due to unfavourable winds... or losing your companions along the way if you are not great walkers! In that case, try calling "Hello! Is there anybody out there?" The sound of silence is so strong, they will hear you for sure!
After lunch another wide range of opportunities is on offer, as an alternative to life on board, where watersports equipment is always at your disposal. In addition remember a glass of champagne can be always served to you in the jacuzzi on the sundeck at any time. A fishing trip on the Merry Fisher tender with experienced crew members could be the right occasion to test your fishing abilities; if you happy flying by helicopter, a fabulous scenic flight over the top of the Fjords is a unique opportunity not to be missed.

The crew is often what make a big difference in any kind of charter experience. Captain Damion has spent considerable time in Norway and knows the area very well. With the help of the knowledgeable crew, he can guide you towards great anchorages and suggest the best activities according to the weather conditions. The Norwegian summer weather is often quite stable, and the temperatures are pleasant both on land and at sea. The days are long in Norway during the summer season, so a vacation in Norway is not a traditional one, as is expected in the regular Med destinations. The pleasure of this vacation will be in all the activities you and your family and friends can be involved in together. And do not forget this is the land of Trolls, get ready with your camera, you might see some magical creature suddenly appear in the scenery!
The Taste of Norway 3-day itinerary is weather dependent. All the activities are approximate and not guaranteed, but Norway is packed full of places that are worth discovering.
Whether a sunny day or in case of rain, you can embark on a journey to an enchanting island with exotic gardens, for an experience that that will delight your senses. Blossoming gardens full of exotic plants and palm trees are waiting for you at Flor & Fjære, on the island of Sør- Hidle outside of Stavanger, where Queen Sonja of Norway celebrated her 70th birthday. The gardens and restaurant opened to the public in 1995, hosting two tours per day during their season from the beginning of May until the end of September. The island is visited by over 30,000 guests each year and functions as a popular tourist site, complete with a garden tour and lunch/ dinner in the on-island restaurant.
Superyacht Digest has had the pleasure to be on board M/Y DAYDREAM for this charter experience in the Norwegian Fjords and takes this opportunity to really thank DAYDREAM's Owners, Capt. Damion, the crew and the Ocean Independence team, for this fabulous, unforgettable Nordic adventure! :)

Classic themes and Arabian tradition meet at Palace Downtown. The hotel stands apart for its highly individualistic architecture and its commitment to offering the highest service standards. As part of the portfolio of Address Hotels + Resorts, the hotel has set its own unique niche with its inimitable design and superior location. Palace Downtown features 242 luxurious guest hotel rooms, including 81 lavish hotel suites. Middle Eastern themes, rich in colour and regional textures, are subtly woven into the interior schemes, while Arabian motifs add authentic detail to each room’s intricate design. Expect exquisite furnishings with elegant design finishes that evoke the comforts of home. Built on the edge of a lake on the Old Town Island, this exquisitely designed hotel in Downtown Dubai showcases old-world Arabian charm in an ultra-modern setting. There are seven design styles to choose from, with every room boasting a private balcony that overlooks The Dubai Fountain, The Old Town or Burj Lake. The Palace Rooms feature Arabian decor and an ambience that conveys warmth, heritage and luxury, with every room delivering the highest quality of furnishing and design finishes in an elegantly styled setting. The interior design is the important aspect that represents and defines the people’s culture. To translate this aspect into a design, you will find several spaces, in the interior and external areas, conceived as a social hub of the house. In the breakfast salon, all around the pool or in the main lounge at the entrance, the space looks cozy and welcoming, to reinforce the idea of a comfortable ambiance, a friendly atmosphere. At the same time, a sense of peace and personal space permeates in the rooms, a sense of tranquility that culminates in the Spa. The landscape that you will benefit from your Lake-view or Fountain-view room, will enhance your stay in Dubai. The Dubai Fountain is the world's largest choreographed fountain system. Set on the 30-acre manmade Burj Khalifa Lake, it is illuminated by 6,600 lights and 50 colored projectors; it is 275 m long and shoots water up to 152.4 m into the air accompanied by a range of classical to contemporary Arabic and world music.
