EDITORIAL The rhapsody is a very free and varied musical composition. This term of Greek origin was used to define works carried out in free form, with epic meanings or national exaltation, or intended to enhance a particular instrumental virtuosity. A favorite form in Romanticism and beyond, it does not follow a fixed pattern, but appears as a set of melodic cues, even very different from each other in terms of rhythm and harmony, with almost improvisational tones. Like our stories collected here and proposed as a sequence of different episodes, they are free and inspired by a single theme: freedom. The freedom to travel, an aspect of our life that we have been forcibly deprived of recently. Freedom of expression, an aspect that made us feel alive: art and music are the disciplines that kept us company during the long months of Covid. As in Romanticism, we too are all heroes, survivors of a danger that has questioned our whole existence. And now it is a summer rhapsody that we need: freedom to travel and rediscover everything. Anastasiya Dobrovolskaya's photographic shots are perfect as starting point of this story: her photos show how deeply we are linked to nature. Equally inspired and free are the artistic creations of Artelier. The use and application of materials in different contexts enhances the material itself, making it a living work. Inspired by the freedom to enrich the interiors to our liking, is the selection of design elements proposed in the article "Objects full of meaning". The 142-meter Lürssen, M/Y Nord, is the new project that embodies elegance and a fighting character. Isn't this the legacy that the pandemic left us? The proposed trip to Italy, along the Mediterranean with final destination Barcelona, ​​gives us unique landscapes full of great charm, cultural experiences, culinary art and nature: a journey inspired by the desire to regenerate at 360 ° after such a dark period of closure in which natural landscapes were livable only through digital experiences and memories. Burgess charter proposals are the answer to the most current needs of customers: to enjoy a holiday in a safe place like a boat, having the possibility to work in a flexible and smart way. The proposals presented include boats with spaces reserved for professional activities. Moving from business to sport, we offer here a roundup of ideas so as not to give you the opportunity to relax too much during your holiday at sea. Don't leave sports equipment at home, almost any sporting activity can be practiced even on vacation! Entering the world of Feadship, we discover that every idea is possible and that not only dreams are achievable but that next generation boats are beginning to take shape. The story continues through design works such as M/Y Voice by CRN, Project Aura by Heesen Yachts and some works by Nauta Design. We conclude in the best way with some artistic expressions of the highest level to nourish the mind on board our boat: we propose in closing this issue some of the most interesting art exhibitions that will be possible to visit - also online - this summer. LAST YEAR ANASTASIYA WAS RANKED AMONG THE 90 BEST PORTRAIT PAINTERS IN THE WORLD, NOT WITHOUT HAVING SPARKED CONTROVERSIES ABOUT THE USE OF ANIMALS IN HER FASCINATING IMAGES. HER WORK STEMS FROM THE LOVE FOR THESE ANIMALS, WHICH THROUGH HER PHOTOGRAPHY SHE TRIES TO BRING CLOSER TO THE HUMAN RACE IN A VISUAL DIALOGUE OF SHARED EMOTIONS.

ou may be wondering how Dobrovolskaya manages to tame natural wild animals before photographing them, but many of his animals were born and raised in protective national parks, in captivity or very often were rescued by their owners and, being unable to return to their own natural habitat, they have been adopted by loving families who have allowed them to have a dignified life. They trust man, they are used to human contact, many could not live without this. This is for example the case of the Š� těpán bear, who also poses in the photos on pag. 16. He was born in a small zoo and survived almost by a miracle. Today he is 27 years old. In the wild, bears only live 14 or 16 years.

One of the most famous images portrayed through Anastasiya's photography is titled "Autumn Equinox" and features three women holding three foxes of different colors. The stunning image shows an all-white arctic fox, a red fox with a white pointed tail, and a silver fox with a black-gray coat. The models in the photo mirror the shades of the three foxes with their own contrasting hair color and clothing, highlighting the diversity found in both people and nature. The photographer's intent is precisely to create a scene with a mystical atmosphere in which to compare human beauty with that of animals and, through a play of colors, shapes and small details, underline their incredible similarity.

BEFORE I STARTED PHOTOGRAPHING WITH ANIMALS, I HAD NO IDEA THAT THERE COULD BE SUCH A CLOSE BOND BETWEEN HUMANS AND ANIMALS. IT STILL AMAZES ME THAT 'WILD' ANIMALS (BEARS, WOLVES, DEER, FOXES OR TIGERS) CAN HAVE SUCH A STRONG AFFECTION AND TRUST IN PEOPLE. MANY PEOPLE ACCUSE ME OF USING ANIMALS, THAT ANIMALS SUFFER DURING PHOTO SHOOTS, AND SO ON. THANKS TO MY WORK, I LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE ABSOLUTELY SINCERE AND INCREDIBLY TOUCHING THINGS HAPPEN. PERHAPS, IF EVERYONE SAW WHAT I SEE IN MY WORKS, THE WORLD WOULD BECOME MUCH KINDER".

The theme of beauty that the artist investigates through photography is even more evident in the two different works that portray a girl with vitiligo, the showy skin disease, posing with an equally brindle fox, and a young woman with scarred skin, due to burns, next to geckos with similarly wrinkled skin (this page). The photograph of the woman serenely embracing a huge bear is instead the work that best represents the artist's intention, that is to emotionally bring the human being closer to the animal world, warming it, in fact, in an embrace. Anastasiya's photographic work was born no more than 4 years ago, when during summer 2018, almost by chance, she was asked to take some photos with a pig and a rooster. Although she had never had the opportunity to photograph animals before, Anastasiya decided to accept that challenge. From that moment on she was able to unleash her talent in a more incisive way, turning a passion into a brilliant career shared with these beautiful creatures.

Anastasiya, 30 years old, after graduating, worked for a few years in the field of anti-corruption at a research institute. This kind of work did not interest her very much, to be more precise, she did not find any satisfaction in it to the point that she fell into a period of depression from which she recovered precisely through portrait photography. Initially she was more inclined to macro photography, still unable to find her style and understand exactly what kind of portraits she wanted to make. After the first service commissioned in 2018, one day she learned from the web that one of her photos, nicknamed by the network "how to wear fur" (the one in which the three girls with the three foxes are portrayed), had gone viral and had become famous in many countries of the world.

Combining together the inspirations deriving from mankind and the animal world, the photographer manages to show the uniqueness of both by emphasizing their beauty and individuality. To do this, she tries to compare their appearance in a very simple but overwhelming way, for example, by photographing people with albinism together with white animals, or people with red hair with animals that have red hair and so on.

According to the photographer, people and animals have a lot in common and if a person has any physical traits similar to that of an animal it means that both are part of the world of nature. For this reason, no one can be judged less attractive based on the physical characteristics that distinguish us. Anastasiya thinks that no one would ever define a fox as ugly because of the spots that can be present on its face and, therefore, it is not explained why a girl with vitiligo should be considered less beautiful than others. Each of her photos looks like something out of a fairy tale, and while it may seem impossible for animals like tigers, foxes, owls, snakes, horses and even bears to pose next to people, all of it is surprisingly real. The artist has been repeatedly suspected of animal abuse, but this is not true. As the artist explains, Š� těpán, the bear, and Chanel, the tiger, were both bought from zoos, while the foxes were rescued from fur factories. Almost all large animals live in the countryside, in large spaces or in specially equipped enclosures and each of them is fed according to what is required by its species. The artist has also sometimes been accused of drugging animals in order to position them on the scene as she wishes, but as she herself replies to such accusations, “whoever believes this does not know that when animals approach people they live with, they trust them and consider them part of their family”. Only animals accustomed to contact with people and free of health problems are chosen and are suitable for her photographic work.

Q&A WITH ARTELIER

Artelier is a reference in the design sector also for the creation of Artist Walls, that is large-scale works of art, not simple wall finishes, but real artistic creations that are worth as personalized collectibles, made by prominent artists. The Artist Walls collection brings together 40 independent artists, each working with different techniques and mediums.

SD: “Can you explain, step-by-step, how a custom made art project is created?”

Artelier: “Every project begins with understanding the client’s vision – we channel that vision and refine it into a concept. We then undertake in-depth artist research, providing suggestions and options to the client. Our consultants then develop initial ideas with the selected artist, incorporating their creative insight, and create sketches and samples which bring the bespoke artwork to life. As the artwork develops, the commissioning process requires our project management to achieve the timescales, milestones and requirements of the client. Once the artwork is complete, we oversee the installation and presentation, such as providing frames, and curate the artwork in situ”.

Artist Walls is a dedicated section that has evolved within Artelier thanks to the team's experience as an artistic consultant for truly exclusive residential projects and yachts; it is their customers who want to go beyond the idea of t​​ he wall and push for bespoke interiors that include contemporarystyle mural artworks, which suit both aesthetic and practical needs. SD: “What kind of materials are used in your projects?”

Artelier: “In previous years, clients have responded very well to materials such as bronze, marble or gold leaf artworks – classic choices, with a beautiful lustre. We are now seeing, however, a new generation of clients who want to explore artworks with more sustainable materials. This includes certain timbers, textiles, ceramics, or even paintings with natural earth pigments. These materials are typically connected to ancient techniques, which have been practised by artists for millennia”. SD: “Could you detect any particular trends in your clients' different stylistic choices?” Artelier: “The diversity of our clients means that their choices largely don’t tend to follow trends – private clients in particular want pieces that in some way reflects them, such as their history or culture. In general, abstract styles continue to be popular, as they have a timeless quality. Now, however, clients are responding more to abstract art that explores craft and texture, and highlights the natural beauty of materials. These abstract pieces look effortlessly simple, but are exceedingly complex to create to such a high quality, and require an artist’s lifetime dedication to their craft”. SD: “Is there any difference between art for residences or hotels, and art for yachts? How does the location influence the choice of a piece of art?” Artelier: “Although many clients select highly collectable pieces on land, it’s complicated to have high worth pieces onboard a yacht, in terms of insurance and protection from sea conditions. They also typically want the yacht art to reflect the unique environment, and encapsulate the freedom of being at sea. Technical specifications are also different for a yacht, and so yacht artworks often need specialist framing, fixings, and even adaptations to materials or finishes. Custom art commissions for yachts are therefore shaped by these practical and stylistic considerations”.

SD: “What about the artists you have collaborated with?”

However, identifying early-career artists who can meet the demands of a project can be tricky, so we advise clients to take the time to do research, understand the process, and allow for effective management. With the proper artist selection and project management, the artwork typically exceeds all expectations”.

Artelier: “Our consultancy works internationally, and so we collaborate with many artists from around the world. We are currently working on an 8.5m glass sculptural installation on a yacht with American artist Danny Lane, who is well respected as a leading contemporary glass artist. Among many others, we are also collaborating with esteemed British sculptor Peter Randall Page and the innovative Korean artist Jaehyo Lee. We are also developing a staircase installation with the emerging duo Vezzini & Chen for a yacht, which is made of ceramics and glass with integrated lighting”.

SD: “Have you ever had to create harmony between your work and other artistic choices in the same location?”

SD: “What advice do you usually give your clients in the choice of an artwork?”

Artelier: “Artelier is a big advocate of supporting emerging artists – they bring a freshness of ideas, great enthusiasm, and are excellent value for money. We therefore encourage 31

It can be in harmony with the design concepts, but still add a new accent, and have bold personality. In some projects – such as a feature mural – the artwork is the anchor for the interior concept, inspiring and informing other decorative choices. We therefore work closely with designers, architects and clients to achieve a cohesive narrative”.

The pandemic was definitely an abrupt and dramatic interruption of all human activities and many creatives, and designers too, seized this catastrophic global event as an opportunity to refocus and rethink the way they design products, buildings, cities. A common denominator is the importance of taking care of the Earth, the environment and of people. The importance of space and how to live it and the contact with the exterior and the open air, are without any doubt, central topics of the new post-pandemic lifestyle, all based on the adaptation ability, flexibility and open-mindedness, all exigences that design must absorb to transform this lifestyle into trends and solutions. Cities will also change, people are increasingly moving towards the countryside, to be closer to nature. Or they are bringing nature into the city, creating green-concept inspired spaces in their homes or surrounding themselves with nature inspired objects that help them not to incapsulate in isolated and breathless living spaces.

The pandemic convinced us that being flexible and adaptable to changes is the solution. This will definitely lead to a broader openmindedness because the absence of events that categorize everything, make the experience around things, similar to a plastic and little fluid attitude. The greater our open-mindedness, the greater will be the possibility for new ideas to emerge and for new trends to develop.

Adaptable and fluid objects that answer to different needs, movable walls and multifunctional elements, will not only be interesting from a design point of view, but will be also necessary to keep up with this ever-evolving tide.

Our collective consciousness will be reflected in design for years to come. We will surround ourselves with objects that talk about us: personal expression and celebration of differences will be at the basis of our space personalization, just like when we choose a piece of clothing and accessories.

Everything we gave for granted until today, has now a new value and is much more appreciated and benefits from more sensibility. If our house was just that before, now we rethink of it as a convivial, working, studying and holiday place. If we did not think about integrating a place for physical activity before, now we also think about these solutions in our homes, a place where we not only reside but we live in.

The world, the post-pandemic design will be richer in details, in objects that talk about the world, that never leave us alone. Objects expressing even more emotions, memories, that enclose worlds we can enter anytime. We have always thought about events as something to go to, and never as something that can come to us. Art exhibitions are open to the public but also accessible from home, through virtual and digital experiences. This small example explains how an improvised solution thought to overcome the pandemic year without renouncing to art events, can actually become a new way of living art, at home, but not for this less captivating.

How can this example reflect on design? Definitely dedicating a greater digital and more equipped space at home, or directly in our living space or a specific place such as a cinema room, not just equipped with sofas and armchairs but also with bookshelves, tables and consoles with art catalogues and books, easily accessible.

If we are forced to limit our trips again, the impossibility to visit countries and cities, will make us think even more broadly and out of the box, how to bring the journey experience at home and not outside.

he is not a boat if she does not provoke strong emotions. Since the boat reflects a precise lifestyle - free, outside the box, far from the coast, that is, from the land -, it seems she sends a message to the observer and in him she must provoke a reaction. Some boats attempt this path through size and proportions, others with bold colors, still others using new, innovative, unprecedented or daring design elements. Others focus on style, on elegance. All boats aim in some way to surprise, to hit the spectator, to attract him towards themselves with a game of mischievous glances where, however, it is always the boat that wins.

meters, everything that you want to bring to the sea of ​​your life is concentrated: passions, work, moments with family and friends, moments in solitude and the most passionate ones... The boat is a small universe in which the owner encloses his whole world, to let it explode in all its quirks, extravagances or in all its simplicity, in the form of design and yachting lifestyle. Beyond 100 meters, we find boats that want to tell the world that being unique, inimitable and distinguishable is an essential factor. Because it is no longer enough to be only big to be the most noteworthy, you need to rise to the occasion and show off a surprising, captivating, emotional look. Many from the shore, from the port, aboard their equally impressive boat, will look at the new megayacht, photograph it, talk about it, its image will go around the world but also on the network and social networks: today size is no longer enough to be the center of attention with style.

Whether she's a dream boat or has a unique design - things that don't always mean the same thing - boats are made to testify to the desire to escape, to move away from the ordinary, and not only in a physical but also a figurative sense. Designing a boat together with the shipyard and the design studio is also for the owners of the largest megayachts an extraordinary moment in which in “alone” 80-100-140 43

Many new yachts want to be green, friends of nature and incorporate some ecological aspect that makes them interesting objects also from an environmental point of view and make these aspects the real distinctive feature of the boat (eco-explorers, hybrid vessel equipped with the latest and greatest green technologies). The bow is the main element that if played in an innovative way can become the boat's greatest recognition (for example M/Y Olivia O, Excellence, Moonrise). The sides often resemble each other a lot, but some boats manage to integrate such unique aesthetic traits as to make them unmistakable design objects (M/Y Artefact, Luminosity, Pi). Other boats concentrate all their charm at the stern (M/Y Flying Fox, Viva) and here we find large stairways, swimming pools, convivial and relaxing spaces so generous and comfortable that only these elements would be enough to guarantee us an unforgettable holiday or to convince us that a boat is all that you need to touch the sky with a finger.

Among the new ones delivered this year for summer 2021, we find M/Y Nord, built by the German shipyard Lürssen, 142 meters of pure beauty, of an enveloping charm, a boat with a strong, combative, yet very elegant character with many features that distinguish her from bow to stern, including the sides. Immense and majestic with two helicopter landing pads and six decks, Nord, whose original project was known as Opus and Project Redwood, left Lürssen shipyard to begin her maiden voyage on February 19th last, after having completed rigorous sea trials in the Baltic Sea.

This project is yet another extraordinary example of the collaborative efforts between the designers, shipyard, and team at Moran Yacht & Ship. Nord represents the largest new construction project sold and delivered by a yacht brokerage to date. 44


Its bow looks like that of an aircraft carrier. Indeed, on the main deck is one of the two helicopter landing pads. The second, complete with retractable hangar for the aircraft, is at midship. The yacht is made up of 5 decks and the stern area is reserved for the pool and beach club.

This is not in fact the first time German shipyard Lürssen has collaborated with Nuvolari Lenard and Moran Yacht & Ship. The 88-metre M/Y Quattroelle was delivered by the same partnership in 2013. The 141.6-metre Nord was designed with one idea in mind: she must cause strong emotions in every observer, not only through her sheer size, but with the design itself. Responsible for her stunning exterior and interior design is the Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard, who have given Nord her striking appearance with a bow design never before seen on a yacht. “Whether you like the design or not, it must strike you. Nord is a serious ship first and foremost, but she also transcends the traditional language of yacht design. She is a warship wearing a tuxedo, an explorer with the elegance of a gentleman's yacht. We have entered a new direction in serious yacht design”, comments Dan Lenard.

Throughout her six decks, she is feature-rich with high-end amenities to delight and caters to every imaginable whim.

The 2021 delivered yacht Nord has implemented an exhaust after treatment system, which consists of the combination of a silencer with a selective catalytic reduction in the same casing, which can achieve a cleaning rate up to 97 % of nitrogen and additional reduction of acoustic noise – a Lürssen development.

Nord was constructed at the Lürssen Bremen shipyard and was officially launched in July 2020: Nord spans over six decks and is one of the largest motor yachts delivered in 2021. Nord was initially designed as a 139m project, but she was then extended by an additional three metres, allowing for extra amenities onboard.

Managing partner of the shipyard Peter Lürssen added: “At Lürssen, we believe that to build a yacht it is vital to work as a team, and to execute such a comprehensive project, an excellent team is necessary”.

“In this case, the team consisted of the design team from Nuvolari-Lenard, Moran Yacht & Ship who supervised the build on behalf of the owner, and, of course, the project team from Lürssen. We are looking forward to Nord finding her place amongst her peers as a remarkable statement in large yacht construction, based on a strong design and expert engineering skills”.

One of the most iconic components of her exterior is the subtle nod to the automobile industry; Nord is the first yacht to have her nameplate on the bow, much like a car grill.

Featuring a displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks, Nord has been built in compliance to Lloyds Register PYC classification society rules. There are currently 65 yachts over 100m afloat as of today. Nord is in the Top 10 of the world's longest yachts alongside

BEING A MEGAYACHT IN THE 5O-METRE RANGE IN THE 50-METRE RANGE THERE IS THE BROADEST CONCENTRATION OF PRODUCT AND OFFER, AND DESPITE THE FACT THAT YACHT DESIGN AND CREATIVITY ARE SUBJECT TO SOME TECHNICAL AND ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS THAT IMPOSE SOME CHOICES, IN THIS ARTICLE WE WILL SEE HOW TO CREATE MANY PRODUCTS DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER IN THE 50-METRE RANGE, SO THAT EACH EXPERIENCE AT SEA IS DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER.

The first yacht we took into account is the 55-metre Lürssen launched last April. For the German yard, whose core business is between 60 and 90 meters, this is the first unit built under 58 meters in this millennium. Although it is smaller than any other Lürssen, its building was treated in the same way big Lürssens are built. Both the yard and Dickie Bannenberg’s design studio have presented, discussed and agreed with the owners every centimeter of interior and exterior space. Designed by Bannenberg & Rowell, the yacht hit the water for the first time last April, exactly three years after it was commissioned by the owner. The yacht features a distinctive design, influenced by the 1973 Lürssen superyacht Carinthia VI, also designed by Bannenberg & Rowell.

eing a megayacht is not easy these days, with all those photographers and enthusiasts equipped with technological devices ready to take pictures, one must always be ready to show the best look possible. This is what a yacht may think about itself. In the 50-metre range there is the broadest concentration of product, in this article we will see how to create many products different from one another in the 50-metre range, so that each experience at sea is different from the other. We have only taken as examples the latest 2020/2021 creations, because it would have been too easy to find all these differences if we ranged through different years. Instead we wanted to give a glance on how in 12 months the market produced such a broad offer not only in the same segment, usually referring to 50 to 60 metres, but exclusively within the 50-55 metres range, to be even more specific.

The British studio promises spectacular interiors with a fearless use of colours and textures, combined with museumquality interior furniture pieces. The yacht, through which Lürssen aims at re-establishing its brand in the 55-75-metre size bracket, will be delivered to her owner this summer.

As to the environmental impact, although the yachts in this selection are powered by diesel engines, the 50-metre yachts range, can also count on the diesel/electric combination and generally offer different alternatives for energy and propulsion, as well as easy access to sustainable materials. With the right expertise from shipyards, the luxury yacht business can sail into a cleaner future also on-board yachts in the 50-metre range, with the two power sources ensuring the right balance between energy saving and performance.

However, at the same time we must underline that the 50-metre range is the one customers usually refer to as a status symbol purchase choice to enter the megayachts segment. It is probably the easiest accessible segment, precisely because the broad offer allows different solutions that reflect the different needs of the clientele and because there are different price ranges, making the market even more dynamic around this range.

FLÅM RAILWAY

The port of Flåm offers some of Norway’s most dramatic scenes where guests can wake up underneath the cloudcovered mountains that surround the village that lies on the doorstep of the spectacular Nærøyfjord, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town itself is best experienced by foot, hiking one of its many walking paths that lead into the countryside. An all-electric ferry service connects the village with neighbouring Gudvangen and is the perfect mode of transport to experience this pristine part of Norway.

Situated at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, today Flåm is known for its spectacular Flåmsbana railway journey, said to be one of the most beautiful and steepest anywhere in the world. Slow down over the 20-kilometre trip as you crisscross up the Flåmsdalen valley to Myrdal station at the top. How do you get down? Well, you can return to Flåm by train or strap into Scandinavia’s longest zipline. 69

Going back to the marine world, we continue the journey moving towards Monte Argentario, indispensable Tuscan stop. The promontory is linked to the ground by three tongues of land: Orbetello, La Giannella and a third one mainly covered by vegetation and by La Feniglia beach. Here the Orbetello laguna formed. Each glimpse offers a sensational landscape, each glance to the coast is precious. The promontory hosts Monte Argentario, the villages of Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano, lots of vegetation and many crystal clear and blue water coves. Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano are the main 2 villages to visit in Argentario. You can take a stroll and brows through the small alleys, enjoy an Aperitivo or a dinner by the sea, waiting for the night lights to enlighten the landscape.

Left Riomaggiore, we go down towards La Spezia. La Spezia Gulf, known as The Poets Gulf, guards a small village of about 3thousands souls placed in the south-west limbo of the La Spezia province. We are talking about Portovenere, an authentic jewel included in the UNESCO World Heritage in 1997, together with the islands of Tinetto, Tino and Palmaria. Portovenere is characterized by jagged coast, clear sea and beautiful glimpses that can be admired from some parts of the village.

Portovenere has some buildings of great historical and architectural interest. The most important, according to us, is San Pietro Church, perched on the top of the promontory. Its gothic style makes it very peculiar and well appreciated by the numerous artists that gravitated around this place over the years. It was baptized the Cristian Temple by Italian poet Eugenio Montale, who took inspiration for one of his poems.

Located in the Tuscan archipelago in front of Monte Argentario, Giglio island is a pearl to discover. With its 21 km, it is the second largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and it is well known for its natural beauties: the crystal emerald sea, with rich and fishy seabeds, frames a 90% savage territory. Giglio offers sea enthusiasts beautiful beaches and an extremely differentiated coastal line with isolated coves of rare beauty. Its crystal-clear waters make up a fascinating underwater world for those who love scuba diving. You must visit the two villages of Giglio Castello, an evocative medieval village which stands on the heights of the island, and Giglio Porto, the only port of the island, small and picturesque, with colorful houses and a limpid sea, unimaginable for a port.

Amongst the places to visit between Liguria and Tuscany, there are the Carrara marble caves, beautiful Colonnata, Torano and Fantiscritti basins. Visiting the caves is like landing on the moon, marble mounts (Apuane Alps) rich in marble basins became a real treasure for the territory that became famous all over the world thanks to these resources. Different organized tours will lead you to discover fascinating places and artistic laboratories. The magic of the caves unfolds just like a vision. center, an interesting historical and religious architecture, the ancient tradition of inlaid wood work and laces.

From Tuscany we move to the south of Italy where after navigating around the Pontinian Islands, the biggest of which is Ponza – 8 square kilometers of rocky and sandy beaches, natural arches, cliffs, pristine sea, romantic coves and a magnificent rocky and hilly landscape- the journey continues to Ischia, the biggest island in the Naples Gulf. Unlike Capri, Ischia offers walks into the wild nature. The island also offers historical points of interest such as the Aragonese Castle, built in 474b.c. by the Greeks and transformed throughout the centuries into the characteristic fortress still visible today and connected to the rest of the island by the characteristic bridge. You cannot leave the island without visiting the characteristic Borgo di Sant’Angelo and the Sorgeto Bay that offers the chance to take a bath in a hot water thermal spring that intersects with the marine one.

Praised by poets, celebrated in songs, immortalized in paintings, the beautiful land of mermaids is well known all over the world and it is one of the destinations of choice of international tourism. Enjoyable in every season of the year, Sorrento welcomes tourists looking for the sun, history, art, culture and fun. Numerous churches and historical palaces, surprising panoramic view points, characteristic alleys full of small shops and craft shops, exceptional gastronomical offer. Also, bars, restaurants and cafes where to spend some free time, shops on the main street for shopping, festivals and cultural manifestations to animate the evenings caressed by a very pleasant marine breeze. In Sorrento, a place of great naturalistic charm, is the Vallone dei Mulini, a deep slit into the rocks dating back to 35.000 years ago. It is worth a visit the San Francesco D’Assisi convent complex, made up of the church, the cloister and the monastery, erected by the Franciscan friars in the 14th century.

Entering the Naples Gulf, it is worth to visit Pompei the city destroyed by the terrible Vesuvius eruption of 79a.d. Pompei, together with the close cities of Stabia, Ercolano and Oplontis, offers an evocative and incomparable experience to the contemporary visitor: walking among the streets and the alleys, leaning out on the different houses and workshops, visiting temples and spas of 2000 years ago in an area of over 66 hectares.

Leaving Sorrento and going around Capri, you can reach Positano, the Costiera Amalfitana village that more than others enters the heart without ever leaving it, with a concentration of landscapes and architectural beauties wrapped by a lemon and broom perfume. Unlike other localities it does not offer numerous cultural sites, but exactly for this reason it can be easily visited in a day, but be ready to walk an unprecise number of stairs and ascents. In fact, it is also called “the vertical city” or the “wedding cake” for its special perched conformation, but with bright pastel colors.

The journey continues discovering the Naples Gulf. Placed in a picturesque position on a tufa terrace, Sorrento is the most famous town of the Costiera Sorrentina. The journey in the south of the Mediterranean ends at the Eolie Islands. Passing through the Stretto di Messina, we reach Taormina, one of the most beautiful and well-known cities in Sicily. The historical center of Taormina is full of characteristic streets, full of boutiques, restaurants, squares with great views of the sea, colorful gardens and many postcard sceneries. The doors of the houses are made with all details, its streets are rich in flowers and delicious perfumes of marzipan and lemon. Getting lost in the streets that mostly inspire you is the best thing to fully appreciate the city. Strolling around the characteristic streets of Taormina is like being wrapped by a colorful vortex, the blue of the sea, the green of its garden, the red and the orange of the maiolicas, the pale pink of the houses. The central square is the most famous and scenographic in Taormina, overhanging the sea, hypnotizing like the chant of a mermaid. From its balcony you can see the Etna, Giardini di Naxos Bay and the hill that encloses the Greek Theatre.

Capofaro is the most authentic expression in Salina: an inn surrounded by vineyards overlooking the sea, where Malvasia, the typical island wine, is produced. With its reassuring presence and the charm of its light, the lighthouse is the sentinel that watches over the sea from the Capofaro promontory, since the half of the 19th century. Since 2017 Tasca d’Almerita family is the custodian of this island’s piece of history, with the responsibility of a renovation and enhancement project: in the evocative spaces previously occupied by the guardian accommodation, there are now 6 new exclusive rooms. The lighthouse overlooks the splendid Eolian Sea from the cliff, with the twin volcanoes at the back.

From Sicily we move up towards the north to reach the second largest Italian island, Sardinia. The southern coast of Sardinia, characterized by long sandy beaches alternated by gentle granite promontories, is delimited by the promontory of Villasimius at east and by Capo Spartivento at west. Amongst the most famous localities we found: Villasimius, with Punta Molenti beach and Cala Pira, Pula, with Santa Margherita beach, and Chia, with Su Giudeu beach. Capo Spartivento is our destination. Here the landscape becomes wilder. In this trait, the coast is famous for its high dunes and white limestone cliffs. In the interior, between the mountains and the granitic rocks, there is the Natural Reserve of Is Connoneris. The real spectacle is actually offered by the seven beaches in the coastal trait from Chia to Capo Spartivento, from Su Cardolinu to Cala Cipolla.

After the Italian beauties we leave towards the Hispanic charm to discover one of its most fascinating islands, Minorca. Cala Macarella and Cala Turqueta, for the blue color of their waters, represent the real essence of Minorca. In the last years, Minorca transformed into a more and more popular destination, yet resisting the mass tourism changes and jealously holding onto its aspect and identity. Romans, Greeks, Carthaginians, English and also Arabs lived on this Balearian island throughout the centuries, influencing the culture and leaving the signs of their civilizations every time. The yacht provides ample opportunity to relax and unwind, with access to dedicated spa and wellness facilities, with a sauna for the ultimate indulgence experience.

The spaces dedicated to the Turkish bath in a relaxation area which also includes sensory showers, bio-sauna, salt grotto and heated water beds. Shapes and lights help to create the relaxing and harmonious atmosphere of the space. Today the wellness area has become an ever increasing priority for superyacht owners, and spas on yachts are becoming more and more luxurious. We round up some of the best superyacht spas, including those available for charter.

Built by in steel and aluminium by German yard Lürssen and PYC compliant, the 85-metre motor yacht Areti, was delivered in 2017. In 2019 the yacht was sold in 2019 and renamed Amatasia. The exterior styling is courtesy of British studio Winch Design, with a cream-coloured hull, white superstructure and grey accents. Winch also developed the interiors which are described as "traditional but fresh" key materials include neutral fabrics and lavish woodwork. Fitness and wellness feature strongly on board Amatasia, with a well-equipped gym, multiple spa pools, and a spa accommodating a sauna, hammam, full-depth plunge pool, dedicated massage and treatment room and a hair salon.

In these first images of the article we can admire the beauty of the wellness spaces aboard Tis, the 111-meter built by Lürssen and delivered to her owner in 2019. Tis is the result of the creative mind of Winch Design studio, that designed each single centimeter of this super luxury floating hotel which, thanks to its Ice Class compliance can cruise the remotest zones. It has a width of 16.85 meters and is spread over five decks, one of which is entirely occupied by the sumptuous owner's apartment with a suite boasting a panoramic 180-degree sea view.

Tis, available for charter, offers all guests a Versailles-style type of hospitality and the magnificence of the interiors is exploded in all areas, including the wellness area. Guests seeking exercise or indulgence will find everything they need on the bridge deck that features a well-equipped gym, hammam, massage room, massage and beauty salon and central spa. The beach club faces the stern platform creating a large terrace on the water edge. It comprises a sauna, an icy fountain and a shower while the wellness center offers a room in which to relax, a hammam and a massage parlor. Next to the wellness center, to highlight the concept of an area which is totally dedicated to well being, we find a fully equipped gym and an external infinity pool with wonderful

Built and delivered by Amels in 2016, the 74-metre yacht PLVS VLTRA was designed by Winch Design to be the ultimate residence at sea, as explicitly requested by her owner. “The owners wanted a full-time residence, not a holiday boat”, says the firm’s founder, Andrew Winch. The spa is a feature the family was passionate about, as they often spend as much as 4 or 5 hours per day there during a sail. Legend was built in 1974 as an icebreaking tug from Dutch yard IHC Verschure, before being sold to a private owner who transformed into a sumptuous 77-metre explorer, also available for charter. Her latest refit concluded in summer 2016 at Icon Yachts in the Netherlands and still maintains the classification of Class 1 icebreaker, not just Ice Class. By the end of the refit at Icon, with Diana Yacht Design responsible for the exterior design and engineering of the rebuild, 100 tonnes of new steel and aluminium had been added and the stern was lengthened by 3.6 metres, allowing a new swim platform and a massive 16-person superyacht spa pool with waterfall. An alluring Balinese spa sits at the heart of Legend’s wellness offering, abound with opulent gold and metallic finishes, an original vintage wood carving on the ceiling, and an inviting dimly lit ambience. Vast in size, it’s like setting foot inside a luxury hotel spa, equipped with stepping-stone access into the rainforest hydrotherapy experience shower, and an exhilarating icebucket shower for the brave. A huge U-shaped Jacuzzi— almost large enough to accommodate the yacht’s 26-guest capacity—surrounds a bronze buddha, and offers powerjet massage. A sophisticated sauna and aft swimming pool complete the incredible collection.

The sixth yacht to bear her name, Excellence is also the culmination of her experienced owner's previous superyacht creations. “Watching Excellence come out of her build shed for the first time was a very memorable moment”, says Captain Ray Shore, who has been working with the owner for more than three decades. “She is a very impressive sight! a trend, especially after the quarantine when we learnt how to follow online pilates classes and understood that we cannot go without them. As a matter of facts, market data for yoga and pilates, revealed that online fitness activities saved us from a nerve breakdown due to the lockdown, and these two specific activities are bound to strongly grow by 2030. Whether it is a physical onboard instructor or connected by video, it is necessary to find a dedicated space. In fact, today taking part in organized Yoga Tours is already a trend, also for those who do not own a private yacht: true holidays at sea, onboard more or less small vessels, aiming to combine a comfortable sea cruise, yoga classes and sightseeing in the surrounding area. A way to calmly and measuredly spend time in solitude, visiting the most picturesque places of the region and enjoying stunning sunrises and sunsets, and also a light sea breeze and a quiet rustle of waves.

Working out is no longer just about machineries -running, weights, kinesis- but a moment of wellbeing for both the body and the soul, in contact with nature. Onboard gyms are more and more common, located near a balcony or on the sundeck or in the beach area: this is because for a newgeneration Owner working out, in a closed space, where the only window on the world is the TV screen would probably be impossible. From padel and basketball to a floating skateboard ramp

holiday, combining fun, emotion and pure adrenaline. As it is possible to imagine that sea walking will be soon an activity to perform autonomously, without tour operators, so we can assume that Bob Burnquist’s idea, a professional Brazilian skateboarder, will soon be part of the water toys included onboard.

A few years ago, Bob decided to build a floating ramp to discover new feelings while skate boarding. With the help of two designers and builders Jerry Blohm and Jeff King, the floating skateboard ramp was created in only four days. It is a 10-metre-long birch and redwood platform with two ramps. This platform is perfectly adapted to people who want to breath and enjoy high sensations.

You only to have to ask, actually, to imagine a sport you would like to cultivate also during a holiday onboard your yacht, and everything is already there to make you fully enjoy your summer. Once it was just called “snorkeling”, and with this term we knew it was possible to see fish and other marine creatures by simply floating on the water with a mask and a snorkel, and to admire the wonders of the sea from up there. Today we call it “sea walking” and it is an activity organized only by few tour operators (viator.com) and allows to explore the ocean bottom, wearing a special scuba helmet and literally stroll on the sea bottom breathing the air from the surface through a scuba helmet, while tropical colorful fish rush towards you to be fed.

This is how in the next years, atypical requests of a basket court onboard our yacht (M/Y Joy), or a padel tennis court (98m M/Y Aviva), will become part of the brief between owners and designers when deciding which favourite sporting equipment to bring along with. Climbing walls, water slides, counter-current swimming pools are already part of the luxury naval charter experience and isn’t it this the sector in which to have you simply have to ask… imagine?

WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING AS A DYED-INTHE-WOOL YACHT AFICIONADO OR AN ENTHUSIASTIC OBSERVER, IT CANNOT BE DENIED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT A FEADSHIP SUPERYACHT THAT IS DISTINCTIVE: A JE NE SAIS QUOI QUALITY THAT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO PUT INTO WORDS.

W

henever a new Feadship touches water for the first time, there is a palpable excitement which is felt throughout the industry as we wait in anticipation to see what will emerge from the sheds.

One aspect of Feadship superyachts that has remained consistent from its foundations to the present day is so obvious that it hardly needs stating: they are fully custom. As a result, they are completely attuned to the requirements and desires of their owners. Speaking to Tanno Weeda, who has been Head of Design at Feadship for over two years, it is this approach that lends Feadship its difference, both in the initial design of the superyachts, and then feeding into all aspects of the new build process. “The owner’s style, vision and character form the basis for the design, which is literally created from a blank sheet of paper. Our studio’s position within the organization allows us to not only design the exterior of the yacht but also to incorporate the technical part into the design. This also allows us to look further and research other aspects of the build at a very early stage in the process”.

With its name short for the “First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders”, Feadship’s heritage originates back to 1949 when six shipyards teamed up with De Voogt Naval Architects to export their superyachts to the American market under this new name. Nowadays, the three remaining parties are Royal Van Lent Shipyard (1849), Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw (1906) and De Voogt Naval Architects – Feadship’s in-house studio which is responsible for the naval architecture and exterior design of many of the group’s custom projects. One of the most recent developments at Feadship was the opening of the Royal Van Lent Shipyard’s Amsterdam facility in 2019, enabling the build and refit of superyachts up to a whopping 160 metres and laying the foundations for many future game-changing Feadship projects.

a milestone which also helped them mark 25 years of being in the superyacht business. The London-based studio was behind both the exterior and interior design of the vessel, with the naval architecture taken care of by De Voogt Naval Architects. Bound to attract plenty of attention as she shoots across the water, the superyacht’s unusual exterior design features a complex style characterised by elegant sculpted elements and shapes and an ample use of glass.

Weeda also highlights that every Feadship owner’s method of tackling their new-build superyacht project differs, meaning that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ way of working with clients. Some involve themselves in the process from start to finish in a personal capacity, visiting the yard regularly to check the progress of their projects, while others communicate primarily via their captain or owner’s representative and take a more hands-off role. “There is no typical Feadship owner: our clients are as unique as their yachts, and the same goes for the requirements they have,” he explains. Whichever approach is taken by the client, however, for Weeda, the skill behind the design can be found in identifying what makes the owner ‘tick’ and using this to inform what ends up on the paper. As Weeda explains, “Before we start drawing, we try to gather as much information as possible about what the owner likes and his requirements for the yacht. We want to wow him with our first lines!”

Stepping on board, Arrow’s outdoor spaces feature topquality furniture – which you might more typically expect to find in the interior of a superyacht – which is surrounded by low glass railings. The outdoor spaces are also distinctive for their high deck heights and expansive gangways. Two standout areas aboard the superyacht can be found in the sundeck, which boasts a bespoke mosaic-lined jacuzzi and the beach club aft with its unique bar area.

With this in mind, it could be argued that it is these intriguing hints at the personality of the owner which are written into every Feadship build and which lend them their headturning quality. Here, we take a look at some of Feadship’s most recent superyacht projects to hit the water since 2020 and discover what it is that makes them so distinctive.

75M ARROW Launched at Feadship’s facility in Aalsmeer as 2019 came to a close, the 75-metre Arrow is noteworthy as the first Feadship to spring from the pen of Jonny Horsfield’s H2 Yacht Design –

continues upon stepping inside the superyacht, which can host a total of sixteen guests across eight staterooms, courtesy of her impressive-sized beam. The airy and lightfilled interior penned by the Parisian studio also offers highend crew accommodation for up to 32 dedicated members of staff.

On board, 12 guests can be housed in style and comfort across five staterooms and are taken care of by a crew of up to 19. With power provided by twin MTU 1840kW engines, the 1850 GT steel and aluminium superyacht certainly packs a punch performance-wise, reaching a maximum speed of 17 knots and cruising comfortably at 14 knots. And, as is becoming increasingly important for today’s adventurouslyinclined owners, thanks to her generous fuel capacity of 185,000 litres, Arrow is well-equipped for global exploration.

Notably too, for owners, guests and crew alike, time spent on board should also be a soothing experience, as a consequence of the huge amount of attention her builders paid to reducing noise and vibration levels on board. This is achieved in part through the use of custom-designed propellers. This dedication to performance also aids Moonrise’s capabilities on the water: she can reach an impressive top speed of 19.5 knots and cruises across the water with ease at 16 knots.

100M MOONRISE An impressive delivery for Feadship, not least because it took place amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic last summer, the 99.95-metre Moonrise has the accolade of being the largest superyacht by waterline length built in the Netherlands to date and also stands as one of Feadship’s largest-ever superyacht projects delivered to her owners to date. First hitting the water at Feadship’s facility in Makkum, the strapping superyacht has a gross tonnage of 3,945, with a sizable beam of 15.5 metres and a draft of 4.2 metres.

With naval architecture from the drawing boards of De Voogt, Moonrise’s exteriors are a team effort between De Voogt and Parisian studio Rémi Tessier Design. The overall impression given off by Moonrise’s design is one of supreme elegance, as a result of her long hull windows, distinctive plumb bow, grey hull and light white superstructure.

demon Totally Nuts. The all-aluminium fast displacement superyacht is powered by three MTU 1,790 kW engines that drive her Wärtsilä water jets and enable her to achieve a top speed of 28 knots.

Another notable entry to the superyacht scene in 2020 was the 72.85-metre Podium, which was launched at Feadship’s facility in Aalsmeer back in February 2020. Commissioned by an experienced repeat client, superyacht Podium is a collaboration between Feadship and the Hampshire-based British design studio RWD, who took care of both the exterior design and interior design of the project. Podium is eye-catching on the water thanks to her dark blue steel hull, bright white aluminium superstructure and a continuous band of glass that is flush to the exterior.

Looking from a historical point of view, Totally Nuts follows in a tradition of Feadship superyachts designed to hit the max in terms of speed. Other memorable examples include the 49.50-metre Sussurro launched back in 1998, powered by two Paxman diesels and twin TF40 gas turbines driving three water jets and achieving top speeds in the region of 46 knots, with a combined horsepower of 15,000.

Looking more closely, observers can also take in other exterior features including her striking glass railings with a teak cap rail, as well as a wealth of stainless steel and high gloss eucalyptus details. With many details of the project remaining confidential at the time of writing, including details of her interiors by RWD, the 1850 GT vessel has a generous beam of 12.85 metres and a draft of 3.65 metres, with a fuel capacity of 184,650 litres. As a superyacht, Podium offers more than just looks, with her twin MTU 1920 kW engines enabling her to reach a top speed of 16 knots and cruise with ease at 14 knots.

Her owner, a keen diver, was determined to have a boat with superspeed capabilities to ensure that remote diving areas could be reached in the shortest time possible. The deep V hull concept, key to Sussurro’s design, enabled the superyacht to offer superb comfort even whilst maintaining these top speeds.

The vast outside decks found on board superyacht Somnium offer numerous spaces designed with relaxation in mind, including an exclusive foredeck lounge area, a swimming pool with adjustable floor and counterflow on the aft deck, and a Jacuzzi island located on the sundeck. Performancewise, Somnium is powered by twin MTU 900 kW engines which enable her to reach a top speed of 15 knots and cruise at 12 knots.

Also worthy of note is the high level of involvement that Somnium’s owner took in his superyacht project. He visited the shipyard on a bi-weekly basis, accompanied by his representative – Ron Kleverlaan from Waterman Marine Consultancy – and even enjoyed drinking a beer with the build team on Fridays. Plus, there are hints towards one of the owner’s other passions outside of yachting , fast cars, which can be noted in the smooth exterior profile of the vessel and the choice of lightweight aluminium as a build material. Somnium’s exteriors and naval architecture are courtesy of Studio De Voogt, with her cosy interiors coming from the drawing boards of the Italian studio FM Architettura. Although details of her interior styling and accommodation have thus far been kept under wraps by Feadship, highlights include a gymnasium with a fold-down platform, a fullbeam owners’ stateroom complete with a balcony and four generous guest suites which are located on the lower deck.

More recently, as well as being the first Feadship to sport an axe-bow, the 2008-launched 72.8-metre Predator managed to bank top speeds of more than 28 knots thanks to her unprecedented four-engine propulsion package (4 MTU 4320 kW engines). Alongside these magnificent speed credentials, Totally Nuts is also ideal for exploring shallower cruising grounds, thanks to her shallow draft of just 1.85 metres. Range-wise, Totally Nuts also delivers and can cover 1,600 nautical miles at a comfortable cruising speed of 10 knots. If you’re able to catch a glimpse of Totally Nuts as she whizzes past, you can take in her striking exterior design by Studio De Voogt, with her interiors coming from the drawing boards of Dutch studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design.

Feadship’s 55.2-metre superyacht Somnium first touched water in Aalsmeer back in April this year. The all-aluminium 740 GT vessel was designed and built as the first fully custom superyacht for an experienced Northern European owner, who opted for an aluminium hull both to enhance the vessel’s efficiency and ensure the shallow draft necessary for 127

offers ultra-efficient energy consumption and significant fuel savings, whilst still reaching a respectable top speed of 17 knots and a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 12 knots.

Despite the many distinguishing features of Feadship’s recent custom projects outlined above, Head of Design Tanno Weeda has observed some noteworthy trends in owners’ requirements which have come to fruition in their designs. Firstly, there’s the often-commented-upon increased use of glass in exterior designs. “There’s been quite a shift in the use of light and space. Since we’ve started to incorporate glass in the structures of yachts, this has had an immediate impact on the exterior design”. Another key trend observed among Feadship’s owners is a boost in eco-consciousness. “Environmental considerations are an ever-more important part of the requirements that owners put forward”, Weeda explains.

Whether it is skilled designers making those first pencil strokes, or owners envisaging their brand new custom superyacht, the inspiration for custom superyacht projects will often come from the world which surrounds us, whether that be from nature, automotive design or elsewhere. And, for Weeda, it is worth noting that those putting pen to paper are getting younger. “We see many more younger people entering the yachting industry and they bring a different way of looking at yachting and yacht design”, he highlights. As for future Feadships then, yachting enthusiasts can look with bated breath at the sheds in Aalsmeer, Makkum, Kaag and Amsterdam to see how this “different way of looking” will come to life in glass, aluminium and steel.

Of course, actions speak louder than words, and it is important to note that this observable turn towards environmental awareness in owners is taking on a concrete form in the industry more broadly. “Together with a lot of other colleagues in our industry, Feadship is very involved in the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index, with the objective of defining a general profile of a superyacht, allowing both yachts and concepts to be benchmarked based on their environmental footprint”, Weeda highlights. Indeed, bearing this in mind, balancing performance and environmental considerations is a challenge to which Feadship continues to rise. The launch of the 95-metre superyacht Bliss which took place at the facility in Makkum in May demonstrates this. She features the latest hybrid propulsion system courtesy of De Voogt Naval Architects and

And all presented on a canvas that allows for an owner’s personal touch. As an evolution of her foresisters – Project Maia and Project Triton – Aura is poetry in motion.

ince its inception in 1978, Dutch shipyard Heesen has led from the front. It seeks to balance heritage with innovation, traditional craftsmanship with smart technology, and to deliver full-custom projects alongside one of the most successful speculative build models in the industry. It achieves this by spreading its wings far and wide. By working with a pool of exterior designers, interior stylists and accomplished naval architects that uphold the Heesen ethos yet bring fresh ideas to the table.

“Aura offers Dutch pedigree coupled with Heesen top notch quality”, says Mark Cavendish, executive commercial officer at Heesen. “Compared to her 47m steel class predecessor, the 50m steel class, to which Aura belongs, is highly different and reflects today’s trends”.

But the Oss-based shipyard also leverages its team of inhouse experts. Those of whom have successfully delivered its most ground-breaking yachts, such as Octopussy, Galactica Super Nova and the soon-to-be completed Project Cosmos. It pushes to be the first, to raise expectations. So, when Project Aura emerged in 2021 as the third hull in Heesen’s 50m Steel Class, the waves parted to welcome a new icon of the millennium.

Sporting a luxurious beach club with tender and toys stored on the fore deck, Aura possesses five large staterooms and vast outdoor areas, all of which tick the list of owner-led trends, points out Cavendish: “She is the only northern European 50m motor yacht below 500GT available on the market with delivery in early 2022. She is ideal for those clients who seek quality, reliability and a long range, bluewater motor yacht with a Dutch pedigree”.

“We specialise in getting as much volume accepted by class within the 500GT limit as possible”, says Cavendish. “Together with a higher density of luxury interior (vs crew interior) and more usable exterior deck space we achieve significantly ‘more boat’ than the competitors within this same 500GT limit. This approach has undoubtedly resulted in more value for money, especially combined with the Dutch pedigree and quality. Aura’s main deck, master cabin and guest cabins are the largest you can find on a yacht of this size and volume”.

Equally as important, though, is the fact Aura answers the needs of the superyacht market in terms of length, hull and build. As a full-displacement round bilge, steel-hulled motor yacht with a bulbous bow, Aura boasts a voluminous hull that offers not only the highest interior volume below the 500GT threshold but provides comfort at sea thanks to her excellent seakeeping behaviour. Well-balanced rudders also deliver high manoeuvrability in close quarters. “We build both steel and aluminium. So, in our fast deliveries menu we offer steel long-range vessels, and fast and furious aluminium in the 50m range below 500GT. We are the only northern European shipyard doing so on speculation”, explains Cavendish. “This is our core, but more recently we began building 55m steel yachts with higher internal volumes, and again we are the only northern European shipyard doing so on speculation. We own this niche”.

With an exterior profile by British designer Clifford Denn, Aura is defined by a mix of curvy flowing forms and sharp knuckle lines. “Heesen wanted a design that would stand the test of time and yet deliver as a series build”, says Denn. “I believe the flowing forms create a widely appealing style that have an affinity with contemporary and classic iconic cars with a similar DNA that remains timeless”.

Own it they do. Aura’s 50m length is the smallest size Heesen builds on spec as experience tells them it is the optimal length and volume combination. But as Project Cosmos shows, the shipyard prides itself on building any size a client wants, large or small. When it comes to delivering in the 5060m category, Heesen has it sewn up.

When first discussing the design direction, Denn referenced various contemporary and classic car designs as examples to show which styling cues have the longevity to evolve without fading. “Certainly, a very boxy Land Rover has the required form that follows function, but we also needed a go-fast sporty look”, he says. 132

increasing the length of the sun deck for guests. The enlarged exterior sundeck promises the best of the yachting lifestyle, complete with Jacuzzi, al fresco dining and sun loungers. Tenders and toys are stored on the foredeck, while access to the water is made easy from the main deck aft with stairs on both sides that lead to the fold-out swim platform.

“The strakes allow us to see through the fashion plates which extend quite far aft giving the required sporty look we were after. The navigation lights also have a shiny sculpted styling strake to match the fashion plates and a feature was made of the navigation lights instead of trying to hide them”. Overhead protection “wings” on top of the ideally located raised search light pods and SSB aerials exemplify design features driven by practicality. The wave breaker at the front of the tender storage deflects water from the tenders. “This is a functional feature originally inspired by French liner Normandie and military vessels”, says Denn.

In addition to her aforementioned navigation lights, Denn highlights Aura’s aggressive leaning forward stance and her bulwark cut-outs as key features that denote style and personality. Cavendish also points to a paint scheme that sets her apart from her sisterships. But key to her identity is the bright and airy interior imagined by British studio Reymond Langton.

Denn and Heesen first collaborated in 2015 on the successful design of award-winning Ann G, a 50-metre full-displacement steel hull. It balanced a powerful and aggressive personality with complex and refined exterior lines. A similar level of detail is detected in Aura’s profile, which arguably shares DNA with Ann G.

“We brief the designers to give a specific character to the design, but also to make sure it is like a canvas that clients can personalize to their lifestyle and taste”, explains Cavendish. “In the specific case of Aura, which has a Scandinavian chic style, the use of a neutral and natural palette of colours and refined textures make it possible for the new owners to choose accent colours that give a whole new personality to the interior”.

Details such as the aft fashion plate horizontal strakes and navigation lights are key styling elements that provide practical design solutions. The functional military style wheelhouse windows reduce reflections and provide a large roof overhang offering protection from sun and rain, whilst

Majilite is used in several shades of pale and taupe colours, both plain and with patterned stitching. It sprawls across walls panels, headboards and windows boxes. The staircase wall is entirely covered by four shades of pale colours in horizontal stripes creating a neutral rainbow patter. Greyveined Calacatta marble features in the master bathroom and shower walls, while an alternative with gold-light brown veins appears in the guest bathrooms. Soft wool carpets, with striped and geometric patterns in both pale and dark brown create a soothing experience underfoot.

Mild contrasts that take inspiration from nature permeate throughout Aura’s interior. A contemporary style peppered with abstract art and tactile materials creates a true home in motion. It’s fair to say that Reymond Langton, who first designed Project Triton’s interior, breathed fresh air into Aura, retaining the Heesen character while adding a new contemporary twist. “The design of Project Aura is different compared to Project Triton”, says Pascale Reymond. “For Triton we created a contemporary and elegant environment characterised by the contrast of extremely dark and light materials using geometrical shapes and lines on the surfaces. For Aura, we wanted to create a relaxing, warm and cosy environment inspired by nature”.

“The palette of colours goes from different shades of pale and neutral colours to light taupe and brown as per the colours that we can find in nature”, says Reymond. “The environment is calm and light but characterised by the accent of bright colours like green, turquoise and light blue inspired from the colours of the sea and used for accessories like decorative cushions, sculptures and paintings around the boat. Every element has a specific space and function, and all of this is achieved without sacrificing the beauty and elegance”.

The use of natural, sustainable materials, such as wool and wood, are used alongside more robust options, including stainless steel, marble and Majilite’s high-performance faux leather and suede. Light Tanganyika wood, characterised by its figured pattern, adorns all the walls around the boat. Natural Canaletto walnut, featuring dark flamed or striped veins, is used for doors, frames and details on furniture. Light Brushed oak brings warmth to the floors, cut to produce wide, diagonal lines on all the lobbies and the owner’s suite.

The same cosy and relaxing feeling that characterizes Aura’s interior design is repeated in the exterior deck furniture with clear lines and bright colours. The result is an interior and exterior strongly interconnected, giving the impression that they are one space. This is echoed in a Scandinavian style meets beach house language that speaks to nature and the surrounding sea. Loose and fixed contrasting furniture, selected from Rugiano, Minotti, Flexform, Fendi, B&B Italia, Manutti, Terzani and Artemide, exist in harmony.

“Our main interest was to evoke a sense of calm where people can feel happy and relaxed like at home”, adds Reymond. “Also, the design makes the environment neutral and adaptable to any kind of client and ready to accept a personal touch”.

For many owners, the knowledge that they own a one-off is an important element of the new build process. Even with a sistership like Aura, the ability to tweak and introduce new technology or materials and keep up with moving trends can be central to an owner’s vision. When creating the 50-metre Steel General Arrangement, a guiding force was the need to keep under the 500GT threshold.

Contemporary abstract paintings by German artist, Katharina Grosse and English artist, Jane Emberson increase the vitality around the boat. Crystal sculptures in the owner’s stateroom are made by the Czech Republic artist Marek Landa, founder of Crystal Caviar. Mirror sculptures made by Polish artist Oskar Zieta appear in the lower deck lobby, while a leather wall panel by English artist Helena Amy Murray draws the eye in the sky lounge.

“By moving the tenders onto the foredeck (and out of GT calculations), we then used the gained GT to provide a super beach club for guest use at the aft”, explains Denn. “This is served by a fantastic fold down bathing platform”. That said, the “one-off” feel is not required by every owner, which is why Heesen’s semi-custom yachts are so popular, says Cavendish: “They offer the security of a proven engineering platform, and owners have the possibility to express their personality and uniqueness in the interior”.

The result is a “neutral and calm environment”, with a touch of luxury and sophistication. Though Heesen welcomes owners to personalise their yacht, the proposed design aboard a boat like Aura is often considered just right. Yet another reason why Aura is considered a defining yacht of her time. 138

ften the most successful yachts are the ones that start out with a simple objective. The ones that grow from a single idea, defined from the outset and that evolve over time. For CRN’s bespoke 62-metre displacement yacht VOICE, that is exactly what happened. “The owner is passionate about the sea and had a clear vision”, says Ferretti Group CCO and CRN Executive Board Member, Stefano de Vivo. “He wanted a yacht that was ‘immediately recognisable from a long way off’”.

Superyacht owners tend to fall into two main camps: those who like to be seen, and those who don’t. For the ones that do, building a custom yacht is the ultimate form of expression and the ideal opportunity to truly stand up and be counted. “The owner asked for a yacht unique in all its aspects, that could express beauty and majesty, be technologically advanced, comfortable and with high performance that pays particular attention to sustainability”, explains De Vivo.

Designed inside and out in partnership with the distinctive flair of Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard, the steel-hulled yacht with an aluminium superstructure certainly lives up to expectations. Taut yet fluid, VOICE’s aerodynamic external lines lend the yacht a strong character and an inimitably Italian touch. “A signature feature is the long cadence of her lines where the gunwale swings along and down in a smooth unbroken curve from bow to stern”, says De Vivo. Custombuilt from start to finish, the striking bespoke colour palette of a smoky quartz hull and silver sand superstructure are complemented by jet black details.

Nuvolari Lenard worked closely with CRN to create a design that is both contemporary and distinctive. This is best exemplified in the “rakish yet harmonious lines that seem to be shaped by the wind”. A vertical bow ensures maximum waterline length, therefore increasing both speed and interior volume. This allows for the tender garage to be located forward. Spanning five decks and accommodating 12 guests, the interior design is centred around the owner’s onboard experience. The entire upper deck is dedicated to the owner’s exclusive use. A master suite to the stern benefits from direct access to an al fresco dining area aft. A panoramic observation lounge at the bow provides sweeping vistas from dawn ‘til dusk. Affording complete privacy, as well as space to entertain guests when desired, VOICE is a veritable sanctuary on the water.

The interior design was driven by the client’s desire for space inside and out. True to form, Nuvolari Lenard enlisted the expertise of Italian master artisans to create tailor-made high-quality solutions. They worked alongside CRN’s dedicated yacht project management team and with CRN’s own in-house elite craftspeople, from joiners and cabinetmakers to marble-workers and upholsterers, to uphold the owner’s request for high levels of comfort.

“Our dedicated CRN yacht project management team spent many hours with the owner, his family and team assimilating inspiring ideas”, says De Vivo. “The result is a highly distinctive yacht with a forceful personality”.

But there is more to this 62m than pure aesthetics. In line with the latest regulations, VOICE, which left the Ancona facilities in July 2020, is the first CRN yacht to earn IMO TierIII certification. This means the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) exhaust emissions typically generated by a yacht of this size are slashed by 70%. It required an optimised engine room layout so as not to detract from the owner’s available living space. But even more importantly for the owner, certification was achieved without impacting on performance. Power comes from a pair of 2,011hp MTU 12V 4000 engines for a top speed of 16.5 knots. That’s an all-important 0.5 knots faster than the owner’s specified maximum speed.

Also central to the list of must-haves was for VOICE to be a full AUT-UMS yacht, so that she can be totally governed by automation without the continuous supervision of a chief engineer. She also needed to have a high-end audio system to celebrate the owner’s passion for music. Rather impressively, the onboard system produced by CRN matches the performance of a professional music studio.

Simultaneously, the level of soundproofing that runs throughout the design is remarkable. An estimated 70 tons of insulating material have been used, which is double the usual amount required for a vessel of this size. In-depth studies carried out on the partition bulkheads and dividing doors of the internal areas show a sound reduction of around 55/60 decibels, thus minimising disruption for guests.

VOICE sits within the coveted 50-65m size range. Already a popular choice, demand for yachts of this size has seen a rapid increase since the pandemic, says De Vivo. “We are seeing a trend towards the request for 50-65m size yachts from owners who previously had much larger vessels”, he says. “They are passionate about this size because it is linked to the increasingly widespread desire to discover and enjoy small secret islands with small ports, and where large yachts would have difficulty docking. Owners also want to have the chance to navigate to pristine paradises where strict regulations do not allow the docking of vessels of large dimensions”.

This is further supported by the four fully custom vessels that CRN currently has in build in Ancona. Ranging between 52-72-metres in length, each one delivers something unique. Hull 138, a bespoke 62-metre exterior designed by Omega Architects with an interior by Pulina Exclusive Interiors stands out for the amount of onboard living space, says De Vivo, with “wide spaces and full-height windows that allow constant direct contact with the sea”.

Hull 139 is an elegant fully custom 72-meter in steel and aluminium developed by CRN in partnership with Vallicelli Design who created the concept and the external lines, while the interior layout is designed by Nuvolari Lenard. She offers generous indoor and outdoor spaces for the owner’s family. Hull 141, a bespoke fullaluminium 60-meter, again enlists the expertise of Nuvolari Lenard for the interior and exterior concept. But this vessel stands out for its “dynamic lines” and “array of advanced hightech solutions”.

And then there’s Hull 142, a fully custom 52-metre fullaluminium yacht developed with Omega Architects, who created the concept, and Massari Design for the interiors. Its streamlined low profile and near-vertical bow exudes a vibrant sporty personality. “The overall design creates a striking interplay between the majestic external areas and the palatial interiors”, says De Vivo. “Large full-height windows add to the strong sense of space, in intimate touch with the sea”. Since its inception in 1963, CRN has always been strongly owner-oriented, designing and building unique fully custom yachts from 45 metres and up. What is clear with the delivery of VOICE is that when owners speak up, their requests are more than heard, they’re fully realised.

Q&A WITH STEFANO DE VIVO, FERRETTI GROUP COO AND CRN EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER SD: “How does 62m VOICE equate to other comparable sized yachts on the market?” SDV: “VOICE is a clear example of where the market trends are going and of the ability and know-how of the CRN shipyard in creating completely bespoke yachts. For true custom yachts, CRN means building platforms that completely fit the design project of the yacht and the owner’s vision and not just adapting a designer creation into an existing platform. The true achievement that VOICE manages to reach is that the amount of internal and external volumes for a yacht of this size are extraordinary, but at the same time, she has a super sleek design; when you look at her in automobile terms, you can liken her to a coupé, rather than a SUV. Nuvolari Lenard, together with CRN’s dedicated yacht project management team accomplished a fantastic result which is creating a sleek and bold yacht with a tremendous amount of volume and living space for the owner”. SD: “What are VOICE’s key design features?”

SDV: “VOICE has an exterior profile that immediately strikes the eye, creating a forceful, dynamic and sporty impression. Her design is supremely balanced with all the proportions combined in complete harmony. VOICE is also exceptional for her impressive, luminous interiors; these grand indoor spaces marry remarkably well with the need for an eye-catching exterior layout with taut, fluid lines. She represents meticulous attention to the finest detail and has been crafted with pinpoint precision; some stainless-steel fittings are real masterpieces. The owner requested a particularly large spa pool on the sun deck that can also be enjoyed while cruising and social areas located in all areas of the yacht. Another special demand was about the personalised colours of her hull: the owner’s wanted to replicate the colours of one of his favourite cars. We obtained fully-custom colours with a smoky quartz hull, silver sand superstructure and jet-black details”. SD: “What were the biggest challenges of VOICE’s design and build, and how did CRN overcome them?”

SDV: “Each bespoke yacht is a chance to create a unique masterpiece developing innovative concept designs that precisely fulfil the owner’s vision, while ensuring maximum flexibility and high quality.

VOICE, like every other CRN yacht, is a true custom yacht. There is nothing that has not been expressly conceived, designed and made to measure for her owner. In this case, the owner was a very resolute and determined person: he wanted a yacht that would represent him and his strong personality and with VOICE, we conceived a work of art with a strong identity that stands out for miles for aerodynamic, taut and fluid external lines. The yacht is sleek and conveys a feeling of extreme speed, as designed by Nuvolari Lenard, but at the same time is characterised by wide and bright interiors”.

ver the years Nauta Design has created a style that is never excessive, but precise, adhering to aesthetic principles and good taste, and at the same time far from passing fashions. With a life full of successes in the nautical sector, Mario Pedol and his team of Nauta Design, the studio founded in Milan in 1986, have signed projects that sail all over the world, operating at 360 degrees, from series to custom, from motor sail. And while Nauta Design over the years gave nautical creations such as Azzam, MySong, projects for Southern Wind, Cantiere della Marche, Nautor's Swan, the sector went through great changes that led it to radically evolve, from design itself to new technologies, from the use of new materials and new propulsions to concepts of sailboats more and more similar to motoryachts, from the development of the charter market to a new concept of boat understood more and more as a home equipped with every

comfort. Nauta Design has gone through all these great changes and evolutions, quickly becoming an internationally recognized "signature". In this article we propose his latest collaborations, particularly noteworthy.

Speed, safety, strength and silence, these are the 4 elements at the core of the R/P-NAUTA 151’, a one-off, bluewater performance sloop with general concept by Nauta Design. This versatile sailing yacht is designed and built for very experienced Owners who presented a brief: “comfort and safety to explore the world, in an extremely lightweight structure to ensure victories in superyacht regattas”. The start of construction marked an exciting milestone for all involved in this project: after months of careful planning and detail design work by the entire team, the new Reichel/PughNauta 151 is in build at the Royal Huisman shipyard, where the hull construction commenced last December 2020. 152

very experienced client. A strong team to work with Royal Huisman on this very special project”. “The deckhouse is essential as it allows to look outside and see the sea while seated in the main salon”, says Massimo Gino, Nauta Design co-founder and partner. Although carbon fibre construction was considered early on in the project, the design team eventually opted for an aluminium project that could still provide high performance but combined with robustness and acoustic comfort for extended bluewater sailing. “I started thinking that an aluminium hull weighs 60-70% more than a carbon boat, but the weight of the hull and deck is only about 15% of the total weight of a sailing yacht”, says Pedol. “Our early intuition was that an aluminium construction sailing yacht could be much lighter than the existing aluminium fleet. Royal Huisman supported this vision with enthusiasm and accepted the challenging target of building a light displacement yacht. Extensive research work and calculations, confirmed our initial thought”.

“Combining comfort and safety to explore the world with an extremely lightweight yacht that was competitive in superyacht regattas wasn’t an easy task”, says Mario Pedol. “The owner wanted a solid, autonomous and safe yacht that was also efficient and modern with a powerful sail plan”. The request came from a repeat client for whom Nauta had previously designed a 34-metre sailing yacht based on a broadly similar brief. The owner was assisted as for the previous time by highly experienced MCM’s Nigel Ingram as Owner’s Representative. This time the owner was ready to step up in size to 46 metres, but he wanted to retain the spirit of his former yacht, including the deckhouse design.

To ensure optimal performance longstanding Nauta partners Reichel/Pugh were selected by the client for the naval architecture. They designed and managed a Computational Fluid Dynamics study bringing in America’s Cup CFD specialists Caponnetto Hueber and Giorgio Provinciali for the Velocity Prediction Program performance analysis. This was a comprehensive hull design study to improve the seakeeping and motion both motoring and sailing at various speeds and heel angles in different wave conditions, while also improving real and ORCsy rated performance.

“Working for a repeat client is always very gratifying”, says Nigel Ingram, “and on this occasion especially so as not only MCM but also Nauta and Reichel/Pugh, all of whom worked on the previous project, received the call from this 153

Reichel/Pugh ultimately tested 12 models before development of the final hull shape. The VPP results indicate that in 10 knots of breeze the R/P-Nauta 151 will sail upwind under mainsail and jib with a boat speed of almost 13 knots and nearly 18 knots when reaching at a wind angle of 90° in a 15 knot breeze.

The exterior profile is defined by the unobtrusive deckhouse that blends gracefully with the austere sheer line. Royal Huisman have embraced Nauta’s bid to make the yacht as light as possible by blending aluminium with carbon composite construction. The deckhouse, guest cockpit and hardtop are all in carbon fibre by Rondal, Royal Huisman’s sister company, who are also building the Panamax carbon mast, boom and the yacht’s integrated sail handling system.

For easy handling, the sail operations are governed by weight optimized Rondal captive winches for sheets and mainsail halyard. The running backstays are tensioned by Cariboni Magic Trims on both sides and the synchronized retrievers have their own captive winches.

The wide transom of almost 10 metres includes a hinged section of the teak aft deck that folds out hydraulically in a single movement to rest on top of the beach platform, revealing an elegant staircase that can be raised for launching the crew tender. The aft section further includes two facing sun loungers with L-shaped backrests for viewing aft or athwartships when sailing, an aft facing sofa and a folding coffee table in front of it. The raised aft bulwarks can be used for seating. Two steps lead to the crew companion hatch and the double helm positions. The guest cockpit is shaded by the carbon composite

The foredeck features a partially recessed carbon bay for the guest tender that converts into a cozy cockpit with hi-lo table and fitted cushions. Both the forward cockpit and the aft beach club can be covered by awnings supported on carbon fibre poles.

Below deck is a spacious dining area and comfortable lounge under the deckhouse, a full-beam master stateroom forward, three guest cabins, and the crew quarters and galley aft.

The deck features three welcoming and functional guest social areas: •

hardtop that can be removed in racing mode. There are another two sun loungers with adjustable backrests depending on the direction of heel, a full-size dining table to port and two coffee tables to starboard, both with sofa seating. Unusually, the curved windscreen has three opening sections to provide a through breeze into the cockpit.

This automatic system allows to sail at all times, even in cruising mode, with the powerful square top mainsail up, to give the Owner unforgettable sailing experience.

The NautaFeadship concept is a familyoriented yacht with all the design trends

premium quality choices, and as the yard said, is specifically designed for clients who have neither experience nor interest in the complex technical aspects of a new build.

The hydraulic fold-out side wings at her transom, easily accessible from her main deck by a twin staircase, allow the area to expand by 80%, creating an incredible beach area with a 3.3-metre swimming pool and plentiful seating. The relax continues at the bow where all guests can enjoy the pleasure of a whirlpool tub. In terms of accomodation, this yacht is able to welcome up to twelve guests across six cabins, including the masters suite, as well as a VIP stateroom, two doubles and two twins. There is also accommodation for a total of 18 crew members in nine cabins situated on the lower deck. The full-beam master suite is located on the main deck, and it can be created according to the owners personal wishes, with walk-in his and hers walk-in wardrobes, a lounge and private balcony. The bedroom also leads into the upper deck, which features a sky lounge and outdoor dining facilities. Additionally, an elevator can transport guests around the yacht while a full-height food lift covers all decks.

Revealed last April by Dutch shipyard Feadship, this new 72.6-metre superyacht concept created in partnership with Nauta Design is now ready to be built as Project 2024 at the yard's facility on Kaag Island. The official start has not been confirmed yet, though the engineering plans and naval architecture by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects has already been determined, and the superyacht can be ready for delivery in time for the 2024 summer season.

Project 2024 is a fully Tier III complaint superyacht built from a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The design team has tried to incorporate a range of design trends dominating the market. These include sustainability, forward-thinking innovation and design, explorer yachts and futuristic features and... a touch & go helicopter pad on the bow, convertible into an additional seating area, to meet all requests of the most demanding clients.

Nauta 54 Wide is conceived for modern family lifestyles afloat

length, the Nauta 54m Wide looks poised and graceful on the water. But it is principally the interior layout that makes this motoryacht concept different from any other in her class. Because the diesel-electric system allows for greater flexibility in how the propulsion machinery is distributed, the 6 generators, switchboards, inverters and twin 1,000kW electric motors connected to drive shafts, or alternatively electric pods, is located on the under-lower deck. This freed up a large chunk of the lower deck for other purposes. The yacht features Nauta’s patented “The Island” system of folding platforms that create an uninterrupted walkway embracing three sides of the beach club, which doubles as a garage for water toys and tender, for a total surface area of 100 sqm. Ordinarily, the beach club/tender garage would be followed by the engine room, but because this is on the deck below there is room for 6 ensuite guest cabins (alternatively a cabin can be transformed into a gym and spa).

With a volume of 860GT, this steel and aluminium yacht, designed by Nauta Design with the naval architecture by Francesco Rogantin's Studio Names, features 8 ensuite staterooms, a smart approach to the crew areas located on the lower deck, engine room and technical spaces on underlower deck and a quiet & efficient diesel-electric propulsion.

The 75-sqm master suite with private office is on the main deck forward. The large walk-in wardrobe in the master stateroom is cleverly placed to eliminate any possible noise from the galley filtering into the owner’s area. The 78-sqm main salon and dining room, with sliding glass side doors on both sides, look over the open aft deck and double stairs down to the swim platform. The sky lounge is a more intimate chill-out zone ideal for watching TV and the open aft deck is furnished for al fresco dining. A final highlight is the 137-sqm of sundeck equipped with a forward hot tub, surrounding loungers, dining under the hardtop and a large bar-barbecue unit aft.

“The basic concept started with requests from clients who wanted plenty of room on board to accommodate a family in comfort, but not a yacht that was too big to moor in picturesque places like St Tropez or intimate bays in the Balearics. So instead of focussing on length overall, we widened the beam to 11 metres and developed an innovative general arrangement”, says Mario Pedol.

"The Island" by Nauta Design now fully patent protected

“The Island concept began with 75-metre Dune that was developed for a specific client who didn't want the pool on the main deck aft and instead asked for a seamless connection between the main deck and sea level”, says Pedol. “Hence our idea of opening the area up on the sides to increase the surface area, improving circulation and providing spectacular contact with the sea. After all, the best reason to invest in a superyacht is to be able to enjoy what is all around you in the most direct way possible”.

The idea was to create an uninterrupted walkway that embraces three sides of the hull in the stern. To achieve this, the designers inserted a connecting section between the side terraces that open out over the sea at beach club level and the fold-down bulwarks that extend the stern platform. This creates a single walk around space that allows guests to move freely from one side of the yacht to the other either from inside beach club or from the open aft deck.

Nauta Design was one of the first to take a long, hard look at the interior-exterior dialogue in motoryacht design, starting with 80-metre Project Light back in 2006 that re-examined the relationship between a superyacht and its environment.

In 2017, Nauta Design began the process of registering this concept for unhindered movement and the solution known as The Island as intellectual property. Three patents have now been approved by regional authorities: Italy (Utility patent), Turkey (Design patent) and EU (Design patent).

“We chose to go down a path that favored open spaces and highlight the connection, rather than the disconnection, between interior and exterior –something you’re much more aware of on a sailboat”, says Mario Pedol. “This was an innovation compared to what the market was offering back then”. This approach has guided the studio’s subsequent projects and gave rise to “The Island”, a patented concept of an expandable aft deck/beach club totally dedicated to guest use with fold-out bulwark terraces.

In general terms, a utility patent protects the way an article is used and works while a design patent protects the way an article looks. The criteria that have to be met for patent protection vary between different jurisdictions, but generally the invention must be new, industrially applicable and exhibit a non-obvious “inventive step”.

Once granted, a patent confers the statutory right to prevent others from commercially exploiting the patented invention without prior agreement.

The Island is now a signature feature of many different designs by Nauta from 54 to 96 metres in length. The following table shows how The Island concept can increase the available beach club/aft deck space by up to 95%.

“Applying for patents is a long, expensive and sometimes tedious process, but in this case we thought it was worth it”, says Pedol. “Market recognition of the right to protection outweighs any immediate commercial benefits a patent may provide”.

irelli HangarBicocca in Milan has announced a solo show, “Breath Ghosts Blind”, by Maurizio Cattelan from 15 July 2021 to 20 February 2022. Specially conceived for the spaces of the non-profit Milanese institution, dedicated to the promotion and production of contemporary art that reflects the corporate culture of Pirelli, the exhibition symbolically represents the cycle of life and gives the audience an insight into collective and personal history, always poised between hope and failure, matter and spirit, truth and fiction. Curated by Roberta Tenconi and Vicente Todolí, the solo show by Maurizio Cattelan, one of the best known Italian artist in the contemporary art scene, brings together a revised configuration of an historical work with new artworks for

Through his practice and over his thirty-year long career, Maurizio Cattelan (b. Padua, 1960) has staged actions that are often considered provocative and irreverent. By using iconic images and a caustic visual language, his works spark heated public debate fostering a sense of collective participation. Not to be missed is the exhibition to be held at the Gropius Bau in Berlin, “Yayoi Kusama: A Retrospective - A Bouquet of Love I Saw in the Universe” (23 April - 1 August 2021), not only an art show but a major overview of world-renowned Japanese artist (b.1929) with her most complex immersive exhibition to date. “Yayoi Kusama’s work is characterised by revolutionary interventions driven by the desire for a union of body and artwork, and an urge to redefine the role of women in art”, says Stephanie Rosenthal, Gropius Bau’s Director. The installation “A Bouquet of Love I Saw in the Universe” (2021) was realised by Kusama uniquely for the vast historic atrium of the Gropius Bau, which will erupt in a sea of large-scale inflatable tentacles for the exhibition’s duration. Kusama’s first museum retrospective in Germany

exhibition maker? The Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is all of these things – and much more. Art and life are inseparable in her work. The Gropius Bau highlights this diversity in the first survey exhibition of Yayoi Kusama in Germany.

The importance of Europe as a place where she tirelessly develops and presents her work – which spans a period of over 80 years – comes into focus, as does the question: how do her world-famous artworks, including her Infinity Mirror Rooms, or her techniques, like using dotted patterns (polka dots), perform in the here and now? To this day, Yayoi Kusama continues to stage her art and her body in new ways. She creates a situation for almost every work that expands into the viewer’s space.

The exhibition spans gouaches on paper, accumulative sculptures, happenings and fashion work, culminating in her recent paintings and a brand new Infinity Mirror Room. The immersive installation will be shown alongside a reconstruction of the artist’s first Infinity Mirror Room, presented in New York in 1965.

The exhibition will feature eight additional exhibition reconstructions from 1952 to 1983, alongside archival materials. Emphasising Kusama’s lesser-known time in Europe, the exhibition also shows how Kusama’s performative works prefigured the self-staging of today’s social media and how she redefined the role of women in art.

Curated by Stephanie Rosenthal, Director of the Gropius Bau, in close collaboration with the artist and her studio in Tokyo, the exhibition draws extensively on Kusama’s personal archive which Rosenthal and the exhibition team visited in person. Once closed, the exhibition will travel in November 2021 to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Through its duration, the exhibition will feature an extensive programme of education and events, accessible on gropiusbau.de/kusama and onsite. The exhibition and this Digital Guide give an impression of important works in their original spatial situations and their artistic and historical backgrounds.

2 America 1970s/80s Since October 2020, the Helmut Newton Foundation has presented its new exhibition America 1970s/80s with works by Evelyn Hofer, Sheila Metzner, Joel Meyerowitz, and Helmut Newton. After taking a full-time position with the French edition of Vogue in 1961, Helmut Newton worked in parallel for the fashion magazine’s American edition as well. During this time, he produced images in Europe and the USA. In the 1970s, most of Newton’s American photographs were shot in New York, Las Vegas, Miami and Los Angeles. After 1980, when Helmut and June Newton began traveling regularly to California, he made numerous portraits of the “famous and infamous” in and around Hollywood.

The portraits taken by Joel Meyerowitz in Provincetown, Massachusetts, were made around the same time as the Newton images presented. His series is a fascinating study of a liberal, individualistic community on the American East Coast. The American photographer Sheila Metzner had a very close friendship with Helmut and June Newton. The delicate tones and softness of the photographs, created as Fresson prints transport their content into the realm of daydreams. Finally, June’s Room presents 30 photographs taken by Evelyn Hofer in New York in the 1960s and ‘70s – a personal portrait of the city that includes street scenes and panoramas, interiors and portraits, in black-and-white and color.

3 Picasso & Les Femmes d’Alger Exploring Pablo Picasso’s creative process at a major turning point for his art and his world, and examining the meaning of this epochal achievement from a contemporary perspective, Museum Berggruen will present the exhibition Picasso & Les Femmes d’Alger, on view exclusively from May 7 through August 8, 2021. Organized by Chief Curator Gabriel Montua with Co-Curator Anna Wegenschimmel, the exhibition will present the largest group of Picasso’s paintings of the Les Femmes d’Alger series to be seen in Europe since 1956; with the Museum Berggruen’s own canvas (known as Version L) reunited with others on loan from public and private collections around the world. Addressing the significance of the exhibition, Gabriel Montua said, “Picasso’s Les Femmes d’Alger series, produced in the winter of 1954/55, marked a watershed moment in his oeuvre. It addressed many earlier issues in his painting. At the same time, the qualities that will become characteristic of Picasso’s final creative period are apparent in his free adaptation of an Old Master as a series of several paintings, sometimes executed very rapidly. 4 Nero, the man behind the myth The British Museum re-opened in April 2021 with the first major exhibition in the UK on Nero, one of the most notorious ancient Roman emperors. The exhibition explores the true story of Rome’s fifth emperor informed by new research and archaeological evidence from the time, challenging the biased historical accounts written after Nero’s death that have shaped his legacy. Recent discoveries relating to Nero’s fourteen-year rule reveal a more accurate picture. Treasures hidden during the destruction of Colchester in AD 60-61 during Boudica’s Iceni rebellion, burned artifacts from the Fire of Rome in AD 64, and evidence from the destruction of Pompeii uncover a new understanding of Nero’s turbulent and misconceived reign.

This major exhibition features over 200 objects, charting the young emperor’s rise to power and examining his actions during a period of profound social change in regions from Armenia in the Near East, to Britain, and across mainland Europe. Drawn from the British Museum’s world-class collection alongside rare loans from Europe, most never seen in the UK before, the exhibition includes humble graffiti next to grand sculpture, precious manuscripts, objects destroyed in the fire of Rome, priceless jewellery and slave chains from Wales, telling the story of rich and poor alike. This exhibition challenges traditional preconceptions and explores what the ancient elite narrative on Nero tells us about the inner conflicts of Roman society.

Heading NORD, looking up at the ink-black sky, I caught sight of POLARIS, the NORTHERN STAR and other PLATINUM-coloured, far away galaxies. I was eagerly waiting to see the perpetual ICE for the first time in my life. A few hours later the RISING SUN appeared and I finally caught a glimpse of the first sharp-edged iceberg on the HORIZONS III. We approached closer, and there it stood – like a gigantic, glistening PODIUM. What a contrast: a few weeks ago, I was living the Italian BELLA VITA on CAPRI under the hot summer sun, and now, I was embracing the ELYSIAN-clear cold airs and facing a LIMITLESS white, which could not possibly be HERMITAGE to any living being.
