Today the new Clivia, produced in only 99 specimens for the most exclusive fashion boutiques of the world, is a must-have for the most beautiful and elegant women of our time. The historical brand "Lacavera Milano" joined the leaders of the Italian luxury leather industry, like Gucci and Ferragamo, in the seventies and soon reached the apex of success by imposing its sophisticated, luxurious and refined style in all the most important shop windows of the world.

These Milan origins, that recall the stylish Nouvelle Vague productions of personalities like Walter Albini, Claudio La Viola, and Giorgio Armani, became a model of contemporary style, recognizable from the iconic logo of the two silver and gold L's intertwined in a glorious hug.

lacaveramilano1970.com

Today Lacavera Milano1970 is back with the NewZero collection (SS 2017) thanks to the passion of the entrepreneur Liborio Intorre, whose project is to reposition the brand in the Olympus of Made-in-Italy luxury. The new designer of the Clivia, born in Sicily and living in Milan, has added to the historical brand a combination of the beauty of his native region, a magical land permeated with unique scents, colors and old stories, and all the glamour of the global capital of fashion, Milan. The revival of the brand has been the result of a significant work done with the help of LD Consulting, chaired by Luciano Donatelli, International Fashion Advisor, who will oversee the revamping of Lacavera Milano1970 and select the most prestigious designer stores to receive the new Clivia. Clivia will magically appear at the arm of the few lucky women who will walk along Rodeo Drive, in Miami or in the great capitals of the world over the next few months, to become the icons par excellence of the exclusivity of the brand. More, but still numbered, specimens will become available in the autumn, only for strictly selected designer stores that have already booked the Clivia for their most important clients.

EDITORIAL

Anglomania The intense admiration of English manners and customs finds its origin in the 18th century at the time of the industrial revolution when Britain experienced change in all aspects of life: scientific advances and technological innovations brought growth in agricultural and industrial production, economic expansion and changes in living conditions, while at the same time there was a new sense of national identity and civic pride. Anglomania goes far beyond a commerial fad, it is a state of mind, as Billy Joel sang. English luxury had nothing to begrudge to its French counterpart: aristocrats moved to London where the industry had been born, English factories dominated the market, all over Europe people continued to follow English fashions, whose fabrics were especially sought after. The English way of life - particularly life in the country and the taste for travel – was admired by all, and the adjective “fashionable” was the criterion of judgement in all European languages. For interior decoration too, nothing could match what was being done in England. European luxury was as much English as French. The former developed as cultural movement – and consequently much more radicated in people’s consciousness and history - the latter grown as a result of the art of communication.

Today the leading luxury group in the world, LVMH, is also the leading investor in advertising, and brands such as Vuitton, Hermès and Dior are masters in marketing activities. France has owed everything to marketing for a long time: France never had absolute monopoly over the production of luxury goods – it never even invented fashion or style because it was the Italians and the Spanish that imposed their style on the French court in the XVII century) but grew with the art of public relations, advertising, self-promotion...

In the luxury trade, there is no such thing as a one-man show: will this winning formula be also the case of the newest yachting event in Viareggio, which is targeted to re-establish the Made in Italy authority?

THE DUO MET IN 2013 IN LOS ANGELES AND QUICKLY REALISED THEY SHARED MANY SIMILARITIES, BUT IT WAS THEIR SMART,

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT AND BUSINESS ACUMEN THAT REALLY DROVE THIS PARTNERSHIP TO WHAT IT HAS BECOME. Intelligent, resourceful, passionate and driven, Art Angels has a shared vision for the future that has underpinned the success this rapidly successful business has seen. Wanting to create a more inclusive and inviting gallery experience for all. The girls show no signs of slowing down and taking even a breath to reflect on the unprecedented success they have seen in such a short space of time. The next few months are equally as exciting with a brand new show from Russell Young ‘Femme Fatale’ premiering at the Los Angeles Gallery and the debut of the Art Pampelonne fair in St Tropez this summer, which sets to take this business to a global forum.

Whether you're an artist or a collector, you simply cannot ignore Art Angels. Passionate about their artists and dedicated to their clients, these strong young businesswomen offer something a little different to the competition with an ever-changing gallery and unique art experience, there is no chance of Art Angels ever becoming stale and the future certainly looks angelic for the female powerhouse. THE QUALITY OF ELEGANCE

THE SALONE DEL MOBILE 2017 CONSECRATED MILAN AS CAPITAL OF DESIGN AND OF DESIGN CULTURE. THE EVENT PROVED TO BE AN IMPORTANT RESOURCE FOR THE CITY, DUE IN PART TO THE POWERFUL SYNERGY BETWEEN THE EVENT AND ITS MANY COLLATERAL EVENTS.

A

ccording to the FederlegnoArredo Study Centre, the latest data show that furnishing sector exports continued to drive the growth of Italian furniture companies in 2016: foreign sales between January and December last year accounted for more than 8.8 billion euros (+1.2% on 2015) with major signs of growth in France (+4.9%), the USA (+8.8%), Spain (+8.5%) and China (+21.9%). The Salone del Mobile is essentially all about the product: pieces presented here for the first time, or presented again for the second or third time (or perhaps even more), because they are still bestsellers or have, in any case, earned their place in the catalogues of exhibiting firms because they have become representative of home living trends. What these pieces have in common is innovation, research and quality; a collateral of the event itself. It is at the Salone that trends are born, new talents are recognised and, equally, that positions and strategies are consolidated. No particular colour or designer stands out at this 56th edition (the era of the one-season colour or individual seems to be over), rather increasingly flexible, exacting almost bespoke products that respond to clients’ specific needs. The desire for personalisation is driving people’s choices more and more, even in the home furnishing field.

The watchword for 2017 is CONTEMPORARY ELEGANCE – which fluctuates between minimalism and functionality, between artisan skills, digital know how and technological innovation – which is essentially sought after for its power to conjure up “beautiful” emotions and to overcome the barriers of stylistic subdivision. Palpable luxury, not strident, enriched with

SUPERYACHT DIGEST |

details that become structural, particular finishes and warm, soft materials. The word luxury thus crops up very frequently at this 2017 edition, a synonym for precious and theatrical, wellmeasured exclusivity: the quality of elegance.

"ONLY IN MILAN CAN DESIGNERS AND PLANNERS FIND A MIXTURE OF CREATIVITY AND THE INDUSTRIAL CAPACITY TO INTERPRET AND REPRESENT IT. THIS IS WHY THE ANNUAL APPOINTMENT WITH THE SALONE IS PARAMOUNT FOR ALL THOSE SEEKING INSPIRATION WHILE ALSO SHOWCASING THEIR CREATIVITY", SAID SALONE DEL MOBILE.MILANO (AND KARTELL) PRESIDENT CLAUDIO LUTI. Edra, Margherita Designer: Jacopo Foggini

"I used an “embroidery thread of completely hand-molded polycarbonate," he says, "as I had already done for Gina, just to accentuate the ability of this object to play with the light. In fact, the armchair takes on different shades and shines when placed close to a natural or artificial light source."

It is an important armchair. Large and tall. Revolving and with a soft shape. But it is visually light thanks to the material, that polycarbonate with which Jacopo Foggini can build weaves as intricate as embroidery that catch the light.

A journey into spatial infinity.

Kartell Cara Mosshart Kartell, Designer: Philippe Starck Cara Mosshart is the pure expression of the “less is more” concept. When you think of an armchair, you tend to think about “more”: bigger and more everything. This armchair is instead the practical demonstration that the less you do, the better it is. Kartell, Kabuki Designer: Ferruccio Laviani Kabuki floorlamp is part of a series of lamps (Kabuki mini, Kabuki suspension lamp) designed by Ferruccio Laviani for Kartell, among the novelties at the Salone del Mobile Milano 2017. SANLORENZO THE SEA IN MILAN @LA TRIENNALE DI MILANO

Sanlorenzo, one of the leading shipyards in the world for the production of yachts over 24 meters in length, selected the princely rendez-vous of the world of design (Milano Design Week) to tell its story, communicating that transversality that has made it succesfull in its own sector. The exhibition Sanlorenzo: the Sea in Milan, set in the premises of La Triennale di Milano - one of the city’s reference points for architecture and design - describes transversally, with a little bit of Dadaism, the creativity of the shipyard, one of the first ones to have partnered with some of the most renowned Italian designers in creating the interiors of its yachts. The event was conceived to immerse the audience in the world of yacht design, altering the city’s landscape: the area in front of La Triennale di Milano was transformed into various seas that alternated by means of a large projection on the ground, evoking a hypothetical ocean crossing in the remotest places on the planet, while at the foot of La Triennale stairway a “dock” permitted visitors to view a projection “au bord de la mer”. The installation involved the interior spaces of the foundation as well, where a wide room was dedicated to the presentation of the Sanlorenzo's range of products (SL, SD and Superyacht) and to the narrative of the collaborations with Dordoni Architetti, the studio Antonio Citterio, Patricia Viel, and Piero Lissoni.

In addition to design, Sanlorenzo is particularly sensitive to the themes that relate to the art world. In fact, it has recently launched a series of initiatives with important Galleries including Tornabuoni Arte on the occasion of Art Basel Miami Beach, hosting an exhibition dedicated to the Italian Monochrome on board of one its yachts. Sanlorenzo will also be in Venice in the month of May for the 57th Venice Biennale with an event in collaboration with Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Tornabuoni Arte. Sanlorenzo’s closeness to art is also expressed from a project point of view: in the future, a further integration of interiors with contemporary art is envisioned in order to transform Sanlorenzo yachts into unique pieces with ad hoc works done for the interior spaces in a boat.

In the highly renowned Brera district, one of the focal points of the Milan Design week, this itinerary-event narrated White (the essence of chromatic synthesis) in its thousands of nuances and symbolic aspects, involving different locations, the most representative, architectural jewels and landmarks of Milanese cultural scene: the Accademy of Fine Arts in Brera, the Pinacoteca di Brera, Palazzo Cusani, the ex church of San Carpoforo. All locations were connected through a series of steps that covered the many meanings, symbolism and uses of White, each their own, unique interpretation. The colour white, is historically a symbol of well-being, sustainability and tranquillity; not a starting point but a point of arrival, a destination, that involves all the disciplines of the project, from architecture to visual arts, from design to fashion. The prestigious locations were used as backdrop for installations by masters of design with the contribution of great architects, all recognisable for the use of White has always been the main color in architecture, from the ancient temples that even today continue to represent the past, to the most modern and futuristic architectures in public and private spaces.

The White Gate, Giulio Cappellini

The entrepreneur, Claudio Balestri, founder and president of Oikos (event's main sponsor), has dedicated much of his life to researching the most innovative, eco-sustainable chromatic- texture solutions for architecture, design and art. He has always given great importance to innovation and driven by a great desire to transmit this to the city of Milan and the visitors to the most important Design Week in the world, has decided to offer a study into the colour White, with a vision developed in various fields. An idea that has been nurtured and elaborated with several friends, among them, Giulio Cappellini, designer renowned and esteemed around the world and together with whom it has been possible to meet this challenge. WHITE ARCHITECTURE / In Cortile d'Onore of Pinacoteca di Brera, Giulio Cappelini created two specular architectural installations that mirrored the strong presence of the building itself in a novel and contemporary way. IT'S TIME FOR MILAN

In conjunction with the Milano Design Week, Pisa Orologeria, international reference for Haute Horlogerie, in collaboration with Feadship, world leader in the field of pure custom superyachts, and Cristina Gherardi Design, architectural firm based in Paris dedicated to high-end projects for an international clientele, realised an exhibition dedicated to the interiors of the fascinating yachting world, reproducing the magnificent rooms of Savannah, the 83.50 metre megayacht built by the Dutch shipyard in 2015. “On the occasion of the Design Week 2017 the offer of interiors is really wide”, affirms Chiara Pisa, Managing Director of Pisa Orologeria, “therefore we have decided to take the precious occasion to welcome an exhibition dedicated to the yachting where the interior design reaches the maximum refinement and accuracy for the details, the same as into the high watchmaking”. “When Chris Bangle meets Audrey” is the name of the project that saw FENDI Casa (LUXURY LIVING) cooperating with famous designer Chris Bangle (Chris Bangle Associates) and FOGLIZZO fine leather. The result was the creation of a unique piece of art design: the Audrey armchair. All proceeds will go to the Italian Red Cross for the victims of the Abruzzo earthquake in 2016. charitystars.com

by Camila Fawcett

GLAMOUR TOUCH TO THE INTERIORS

M

arco Mehn calls it: Evolution Art. This means that by all his techniques and materials he creates emotional key visuals of today’s lifestyle.

The archetypes of mankind (“The Big Five”; “Resurrection” or “Evolution Forever”) or the iconic heroes of music and aristocratic glamour (“Michael Jackson”; “Tribute to Grace Kelly”) are subjects of his remarkable and always impressive artistic style. Like a mirror he reflects the luxurious taste and the ‘art of living” of today and tomorrow.

41

Not only in Europe he is an accepted and - by having sold a row of masterpieces - successful artist, painter and creator of 3D-objects, with thirty years’ experience in the art scene and business. He consistently ensures the creativity, quality and style of a trendsetter in modern painting, design and handling visual effects. His vision is to depict modern ambiance and tecnhique, let it influence an expressive, emotionalizing object and thus establish a “pioneering artwork”.

He considers himself an “Evolution artist”, someone who gives the art of today a glimpse how it will develop not only in the view of the art community but of all those who can afford such unique pieces of artwork as part of their lifestyle. So he reaches new target groups, as buyers and later collectors. This evolution addresses the taste and ambition for luxury, not only the sophisticated spirit of art museums.

“HOPEFULLY MY GLAMOROUS ART OF CAUSING EMOTIONS IS A GREAT BENEFIT FOR EVERYBODY. NOT ONLY FOR THE TRADITIONAL ART COMMUNITY BUT FOR ALL THOSE WHO SIMPLY LIKE AND ENJOY IT BUT DO NOT VISIT A MUSEUM OR VERNISSAGE EVERY DAY.”

As a master of Multi-mixed-media technique his work is outstanding throughout Europe. From gold, silver and crystals to oil, chalk, dust and sand, everything gives his mult-dimensional pictures the typical touch.

In 2004 Marco Mehn has created (and is using since then) a unique steel- or aluminium-technique. The metal is not only the perfect frame but the pre-lasered material he paints on, sometimes with a multitude of metal layers (3D-effect). It’s called Space Frame and he has a global patent on it since 2006. In 2010 he added the fourth dimension into the 3D-paintings by integrating LED-light, in 2016 combined with half-round "Spacy balls". Worldwide he is the only artist working with this sophisticated high-tech approach.

43

Born in 1967 in Germany, Marco Mehn is a selftaught artist. He started his career aged 19 years. Until 1999 he established as an entrepreneur a company (with 80 employees) in the art niche of innovative and creative framing. Since the year 2000 he has concentrated all his efforts in combining his knowledge in top-materials with an enormous creativity in painting. As one of the most-sought artist with -3D-Objects (sculpture like “El Diablo”or a world-famous BMW-Mini-Car with 20 handapplied paints, three finishes and 40.000 Swarovski crystals.) he has had exhibitions in Munich (first in 2001), Vienna, Basel, Geneva, Monte Carlo, Paris and Dubai. Now he is heading for the United States and the UK. Hundreds of well sold pictures or objects in a prize range up to 325.000 $ are a sucess as such. Up to now not in galleries or via auctions but only at high-class fairs or luxury events like the ‘Masters of LXRY’ in 2016. This participation shows that buyers who like his style and collect his artwork give him the freedom to continuously follow his own way pf presenting it.

As an example of those who love his artwork His Serene Highness The Sovereign Albert II Prince of Monaco can be mentioned. Not only a wedding gift (in 2011) of Marco Mehn’s artwork “My Great Love” is part of his palace. More than that the artist was invited to Monte Carlo again and again. Marco presented to him a painting of his mother, Princess Gracia, the former American actress Grace Kelly. Spontaneously The Prince knelt down and handsigned the painting (sse picture below) with the promise that this unicum can be auctioned for a charity cause.

OF FASHION... AND DESIGN

represent, finally, together with a strong visualization ability - that means you can imagine the finished product before ever putting the idea on paper - the quintessence of a great designer.

Design is energy, because energy is the property that must be transferred to an object in order to perform or can be converted in form. And personality is the key that opens the social interaction, unless one prefers to remain indistinct, or worse, boring. In fashion as well as in product design, the designers' role is helped in this regard. The system is wider, naturally interwined with people's life, and most importantly, the product - both sophisticated or casual - is easy to understand.

HOW MUCH DOES THE PERSONALITY OF A DESIGNER IMPACT ON THE PRODUCT'S IMAGE? WHAT ARE THE MOST DISTINCTIVE TRAITS OF DESIGNERS?

Everyone has to face common stereotypes: artists are commonly temperamental and eccentric. Scientists are considered serious and introverted. There are just so many traits that people believe designers have. And although some of them may not be true, there are quite a few that almost every great designer has. Empathetic: designers need to understand how their target audiences feel. What stimulates them. What drives them to the final buying decision.

D

esigners can always express personality through their creations, though most of them often prefer to adopt an introvert behaviour. The result is that the ones that let their character and spirit sparkle, have become superstars, with an incredible positive return on their brands in terms of visibility and recognisability. But, most importantly, they become much more than a designer.

Meticulous: other people may see a straight line, but a great designer sees that microscopic curve in the middle. Where others see perfect balance, a great designer notices a little difference.

Patient: even in front of some difficulties - when they would like to bang their heads against solid surfaces in frustration - they overcome the situation and come out with the right solution.

THEY ARE RECOGNIZED AS A PERSONAL FORCE, CONSTANTLY REINVENTED AND ALIGNED TO HIS OR HER NEXT CREATION.

Perceptive: able to connect things and to introduce something new, something that people who do not have the same sensitive insight will not be able to do. Great designers have a message to convey with every piece they work on.

Individual looks and personal statements are their flag. You might not agree with everything they say, but you have to admire their personas and accomplishments, since underpin everything they have invented or created something new, as a result of combination of essential factors.

Coco Chanel, Yves SaintLaurent, Vivienne Westwood and Karl Lagerfeld are just a few names among the iconic fashion designers who wrote the history of fashion of the last century, and known till at the present time for their ability to exhibit the beauty of a woman’s body by way of stylish, modernist, creative and elegant clothing.

First of all, a great fashion designer has excellent business skills, understand budgets, marketing, and sales concepts, has a strong sense of competition, is highly creative, has a great sense of style and strong drawing skills, good eye for materials and sewing skills. The knowledge of current trends and the ability to anticipate them

«Fashion is architecture. It is a matter of proportions.» Coco Chanel

What are your top 5 rules to beautifully design a boat, in terms of exteriors? I guess proportion ranks first, right?

There are no rules, really, a good design doesn’t happen by following rules, otherwise many would do it easily. If you follow some kind of rules, you can merely achieve a mediocre design for the masses. To reach beyond this level, more mystic components enter in game: dreams, emotions, intuition, feelings, subliminal interpretation, playful sarcasm of the child inside us, the thrilling curiosity toward unknown… I can answer to the question in another way - First, Beauty... I know what beautiful is to ME, and experience tells me that my taste is appreciated by others, so I tend to please my taste for beauty, in the hope of finding the closest interpretation of absolute beauty - which always comes from a substance. Second, Elegance... I strongly believe that elegance is a matter of movement, still elegance doesn’t exist, a photo says nothing about it, so imagine it moving... a woman, a yacht... Third, Stop in time… to quote Armani’s mother, if you want elegance, put on the necessary. Or Coco Chanel: "when’s enough is already too much". Fourth, Proportions…they are important and they work as long as they come from function (I find electric car or a central engine car incredibly fake, when with a long hood and no engine in it… not to mention the woman’s world here...) and fifth - Answer it!… beautiful is beautiful only when no questions are needed, designer should answer them all and this is the scope of our job.

If it is true that great designers have a message to convey with every piece they work on. Can also yacht designers, who actually work on commission and not for their brand, have their own message behind their creations? Great designers are universal designers, design is only one. The fact that one preferably exercises in a selected field, like yacht design... is a personal choice, like to prefer painting before sculpture. All great artists can (and could) exercise in various disciplines and art forms, and the same applies to designers. A great designer should be able to exercise in any field of design under any circumstances, for the brand or on commission, and leaving a personal message in our work is not a choice or a skill. It is inevitable, just like emitting a voice when we speak. 49

YVES SAINT LAURENT

The French fashion designer. He is regarded as one of the greatest names in fashion history. Vogue called him the "King of fashion designers". Born in 1936 in Algeria, at 17 he left to Paris where he met Michelde Brunhoff director of French Vogue - who, after having seen his drawings, decided to publish several of them immediately. He was introduced to Christian Dior where he worked until Dior's death in 1957. After taking over as art director for Dior, Yves Saint Laurent launched his first collection for the company, the Ligne Trapéze, that year. It was a resounding success and in 1962 he set up his own fashion house with Pierre Bergé. In 1966, at a time when the perception of women wearing pants was considered off-kilter and inappropriate, Yves Saint Laurent introduced the world to Le Smoking, a tuxedo-style suit that quickly became the epitome of sex appeal. His other inventions include the reefer jacket (1962), the sheer blouse (1966), and the jumpsuit (1968).

In October 1998 Yves Saint Laurent showed his last ready-to-wear collection for the Rive Gauche label he had founded more than 30 years before. He carried on his haute couture until 2002.

After a brief stint with Alber Elbaz as designer, in 1999 Tom Ford arrived to take control at the house. The brand entered the stratosphere where it remains today, covering perfume and menswear as well as womenswear. His last show, in 2002, was regarded in Paris as an event of national significance. The message of the great visionary "dressing is a way of life", continues today in the work by Stefano Pilati, who replaced Tom Ford in 2005. Yves Saint Laurent died after a long period of ill health in 2008, at the age of 71.

«We must never confuse elegance with snobbery»

“The most beautiful clothes that can dress a woman are the arms of the man she loves. But for those who haven’t had the fortune of finding this happiness, I am there.” Yves Saint Laurent

Where is the limit between elegance and snobbery in terms of design? Are there specific codes also in yacht design?

As in all matters of taste, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So it follows that snobbery is in that same eye. We’ve got a clear idea in the studio about how we want out projects to look: both inside and outside. We think it’s elegant but I completely accept that there will be some who don’t. I’ve said it before but yacht design is still often compartmentalised into convenient classic / modern categories – depressingly so. Fashion is much more nuanced and yachting could do with the sense of experimentation and exploration visible in that world. As to the participation of the Owner in the building construction, what are the choices he/she feels more involving, or the moments when he/she feels more motivated?

We see such a range of involvement by Owners: those who want to meet monthly – others who we see perhaps three or four times during the course of a three year project. The happy medium is probably somewhere in the middle. I hope that motivation remains strong throughout – as it should when you are spending such a quantity of money on something which is essentially handbuilt (and hand designed) for you. 53

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood helped set the style for modern punk and New Wave music. Born in Glossop, Derbyshire, England, in 1941, she is considered one of the most unconventional and outspoken fashion designers in the world. She rose to fame in the late 1970s when her early designs helped shape the look of the punk rock movement. At the age of 17, Vivienne's family moved to Harrow in the country of Middlesex, where the future fashion icon found work at a local factory and eventually enrolled at a teacher training school. By the early 1960s Vivienne's life seemed established. She'd married Derek Westwood, with whom she had son, Ben, and embarked on work as a teacher. Then, however, everything changed. Her first marriage dissolved and she met Malcolm Mclaren, an art student and future manager of the Sex Pistols. With Mclaren, Westwood had a second son, Joseph. Through her new partner, Westwood, who'd begun making jewelry on the side, was introduced to a new world of creative freedom and the power art had on the political landscape. The hippie movement was still the fashion look of late 1960s London, but this did not inspire Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, they were more interested in rebellion and in particular 1950s clothing, music and memorabilia. By 1972 Westwood and McLaren began to design t-shirts with provocative messages leading to their prosecution under the obscenity laws; their reaction was to produce even more hard core images. The collapse of the Sex Pistols and the absorption of Punk into the mainstream left Westwood disenchanted. In 1980 the shop was refitted and renamed Worlds End, the name still in use today.

The period between 1993 – 1999 is characterized by a sort of Anglomania: Vivienne believes that fashion is a combination and exchange of ideas between France and England. “On the English side we have tailoring and an easy charm, on the French side that solidity of design and proportion that comes from never being satisfied because something can always be done to make it better, more refined.” From 2000 up to present, Westwood returned to a more asexual cut, exploring the natural dynamic of the fabric by treating it like a living mass. As to her latest SS17 collection, it is inspired by the hippy culture and artistic movements of the 1970s; “The woman I design for is an intellectual and an art lover. Comparing one thing with another is the root of intelligence: looking at the past with today’s eyes throws light on the present. Knowledge of the world is her adventure”. Through her blog Climate Revolution, she aims at drawing attention to climate change. She is one of the few fashion icons in the world - maybe the only one - who used, and continue to use, her high-profile brand to put forward her political beliefs. Her fashion empire consistently reflects her concerns about mass production and concentrates on producing "quality not quantity". It is her opinion that if people buy well, by first choosing well their clothes and then making them last, there would not be such a climate change problem.

What drives the evolution of yacht design?

My work is driven by a relentless quest for advanced architecture, strong design and perfect proportions. Those, however, become reality only 4 years later, at the time of the launch... and the lines need to reflect the lifestyle of the owners over the next 5 to 10 years. I do have very personal views on yacht design. I have created Exuma, an iconic yacht that embodies all the features that have become mainstream now. The technical part, the naval architecture is the base for the design, it has to fit the use of the yacht, the way haute couture fits the person wearing the garment, or the way a Savile Row suits a gentleman, once we have this perfect envelope in place ,we refine the design, to create the haute couture of yachting, the bespoke yacht. That is the reason why we never create the same yacht, but we do have our individual and distinctive signature. What can be considered "provocative design" today?

The aim of my work is not to be provocative but to create what I feel could be a yacht for an individual, non-conventional owner. A very novel design can only be adopted by a forward-thinking individual, who wants his very personal yacht; and we are here, ready to create a masterpiece that will mark its era. I consider Exuma and A to be evocative yachts, not provocative. Today I would like to create a highly technical engineered yacht, propulsed by wind and characterized by a true quiet living and well being space. It has to be a graceful yacht, able to mark its own era for elegance and for zeroimpact on environment. A true evocative yacht. 57

KARL LAGERFELD

Visionary, eclectic, and iconic, Karl Lagerfeld would most certainly have been an enlightened mind in the Age of Enlightenment. As a fashion designer, photographer, publisher, designer, and also film director, Karl Lagerfeld has created a universe in which every line is perfectly under control, each detail of absolute importance. The Cartesian mind has hatched a caustic, ultramodern, highly structured style, with an allure and a manner that emerges through graphic symbols that have become his unequivocal hallmarks.

Karl Lagerfeld instinctively grasps every molecule from the atmosphere and turns it into the mood of the moment. His style delves deep into his cosmopolitan background and into his perfect mastery of languages, which he acquired in Hamburg, where he was born in 1938. Karl Lagerfeld is intriguing and everquestioning, never leaving anyone indifferent. His ability to capture, anticipate, and interpret tomorrow’s trends always fascinates. In Paris he left his marks on Chloé. In Rome he worked to give a new look to Fendi furs. His joint venture with the Italian fashion house started in 1965 and, over the years, extended to all the label’s ready-to-wear collections, and it is still going today. A chameleon of style, Karl Lagerfeld has nevertheless refined stylistic features of his own, which he works into his own eponymous line, which has been going since 1984. One year earlier, he had been called in to give new life to Chanel: he gradually shook up its stylistic elements, rejuvenated its image, and introduced a breath of fresh air that allowed the brand to reassert its supremacy in the world of luxury and fashion.

An insatiable couturier and designer, he again put his name to the Chloé collections from 1992 to 1997, and opened up a new chapter in his own name, launching the Lagerfeld Gallery in 1998 (the maison again adopted the name of its founder in 2006: Karl Lagerfeld). Always in tune with the world around him, he was the first to agree to take on the mass market, designing thirty models for H&M. This experience led to a new idea – a “new beginning”- which he started working on in 2010, announcing a collection for 2011 based on a new concept: mass-market ready-to-wear garments steeped in the luxury and quality of which the Lagerfeld’s style is a symbol: “mass elitism, which has long been my dream (…), it’s the future of modernity.” "Fashion is a language that creates itself in clothes to interpret reality".

ANDREW WINCH

As result of a creative process, how yacht design can be an interpretation of our time?

Yacht design is a complex and highly creative process, combining all aspects of our clients’ lives in one defined space. This focusses the mind and ensures we are not only clever but thorough in our approach. Yacht design is at the cutting edge of creativity and a true reflection on what is going on around us - never are form and function so carefully considered together. To satisfy our clients' dreams we create a floating paradise where we have thought about and pre-empted every wish, creating a true vision of the ultimate lifestyle. This is a constantly changing arena where the creative process is perhaps at its best due to the fact that we are designing a moving object - the perfect home, which can also be moved….. You said "Space is nothing without energy. Everything we design must have energy." Can you explain?

At Winch Design, we start the design process with a clean sheet of paper. Each client presents a new challenge and an opportunity to push creative boundaries. We pride ourselves on NOT having a house style, creating something completely unique and bespoke for each client. We inject energy into the project to create dynamic spaces, regardless of style. The human element gives each project energy, the relationship we build with each client, the passion each member of our team has for design and the prospect of creating something truly exceptional - this energy is our hallmark. Creating an iconic, timeless design which is alive, vibrant and inspiring is our motivation. 61

THOMAS MERCER TRIBUTE TO SIR FRANCIS CHICHESTER Last year Thomas Mercer launched the Atlantic Challenge, the new exclusive edition of its Legacy marine chronometer. With its timekeepers featuring fundamentally in their achievements and histories, Thomas Mercer’s heritage is intimately linked with such legendary figures as Sir Ernest Shackleton, Sir Winston Churchill, and such notable vessels as the Royal Yacht Britannia, thus deeply entrenching the brand in the annals of British sailing.

To add a further dimension to this dashing heritage, the Atlantic Challenge wants to pay homage to another great feat of navigation, the solo world speed distance record established in 1971 by Sir Francis Chichester during the eponymous race. Sir Francis Chichester’s name is a legend in British navigation. Aviator and sailor, he was knighted in 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II as the first person to sail single-handed around the world by the clipper route, and the fastest circumnavigator. For the ceremony, Her Britannic Majesty used the

83

sword employed by her predecessor the first Queen Elizabeth to knight the first Sir Francis of nautical fame - the adventurer Drake (the first Englishman, with his crew, to circle the globe).

Never satisfied with his achievements, Chichester’s restless spirit turned at once to the next great hurdle facing the singlehander; the speed barrier of 200 nautical miles a day. On January 12th 1971, aboard his 57ft ketch Gipsy Moth V, he set off from Bissau in Portuguese Guinea to cross the Atlantic to San Juan del Norte. During this 23-day crossing, he repeatedly broke said barrier, achieving his top record on January 31st when he raced 231 miles in just 24 hours. For navigating he used compass as direction finder, sextant to calculate latitude and Thomas Mercer chronometer No 23543 to determine longitude. Alessandro Quintavalle, Thomas Mercer’s chairman: “We are honoured to pay homage to this important page of British sailing history. Sir Francis Chichester was a pioneer and his unflinching determination and unique spirit of adventure led him to achieve goals until then considered insuperable".

Every single detail of all the spaces created for these two new vessels, is born from his pencil. Not a surprise, considering that in 2013, alongside his architecture practice, he founded Achille Salvagni Atelier, a studio devoted to the production of his limited edition furniture and lighting. Following the success of the Atelier in both Italy and the USA, Salvagni opened Achille Salvagni Atelier in London Mayfair to showcase his latest creations, collections of sophisticated limited edition pieces for design enthusiasts and collectors.

THE CLIENT DOESN'T KNOW YET... HE OWNS A RARITY

The exclusive furniture and lighting collections signed by Achille Salvagni Atelier are hand-produced in Rome by the finest artisans, using only the most exceptional materials. Each piece from the Atelier is the result of scrupulous craftsmanship, historical reflection and impeccable attention to detail down to the patina choice on a door handle or a custom hinge on a cabinet. With a couturier’s approach to design, Salvagni places a unique spin on elegance by infusing the decorative grandeur of the Roman Empire into wholly distinctive, innovative contemporary forms.

THE HIDDEN AND DISCREET CHARM OF EACH RARE THING IS NOT JUST ABOUT BEING FOR FEW, RATHER BEING DIFFICULT TO FIND. ONCE YOU HAVE GOT IT, YOU OWN A TREASURE.

very artist works alone. Every artist has a loneliness intimate soul, that allows him to feel, to perceive - to penetrate - the truth of things. It is that good side of loneliness that allows every artist to create extraordinary shapes. His design studio - Rome- and London-based, has a team of 24 people, yet he creates alone, driven by the key-elements evoked by the client. Achille Salvagni puts the knowledge of the client in the first place and always spends with him and the family a short period of time trying to catch as much as he can concerning taste and habits. It can seem a sort of vanity or exuberance, but on the contrary it is the natural and innate attitude of any artist to listen (himself, or the client) before creating.

Achille Salvagni is not only a good architect or a mere talented interior designer, able to create harmonious spaces with timeless atmospheres. He is a real style designer, an artist able to generate his own vision: not a performer, but a composer, we would say talking about music. 105

THE LOST CITY OF POMPEII RENOWNED FOR DRAWING UPON THE DIFFERENT HISTORIES OF ROME WITHIN HIS WORK, ACHILLE SALVAGNI HAS FOUND INSPIRATION A LITTLE FURTHER AFIELD FOR HIS LATEST FURNITURE EXHIBITION.

"When you arrive in Pompeii, you are struck by the colours of the walls, mosaics and frescoes," says Salvagni, recalling his visits to the archaeological site. "Even in their muted tones, they are beautiful and always remind me of spring." So taken was Salvagni by Pompeii’s faded palette of pale greens, earthy reds, burned oranges, blushes and blues, that he used it as the basis for a new themed exhibition unveiled at Salvagni’s Mayfair space in March.

In particular, Salvagni’s eye was caught by the fresco on the Tomb of the Diver. "The simplicity of line of the diving figure makes it so relevant even now," he says. "I wanted to harness this incredible history of the rest of Pompeii and see how it could serve as a point of reference for a contemporary interior."

New pieces include the Gio Louro Faia, a double door bar cabinet in lacewood with a polished and protected smooth brass top, inset gold handles and bronze legs.

"A Study in Green", composition from the Aldus collection: "Garda" (sofa), "Pietra" (cocktail table), "Eracle" (vase)

Bench, shown in an inviting grey astrakhan wool, have received Pompeii-inspired updates with new finishes, colours and fabrics. The sculptural console table made from a swooping curve of cast bronze topped with a slab of Rosso Levanto marble is a new addition that Salvagni is particularly proud of. "We had to source the exact marble for “Diomede” until I was happy that it was the perfect fit,’ he says of the design, which is an homage to a neo-classical painting of Villa Diomede in Pompeii. ‘The stone is laid so bare in this piece that I needed to love every vein in the block of marble."

Twins for birthdate and for size, but with a completely different orientation. In less than two months, the superyacht atelier Rossinavi, launched two new vessels for two different private clients, both European, but with totally different needs and inspirations.

The 50m M/Y Endeavour II and the 49m M/Y Aurora, both entirely custom in their design, have been finely pencilled by architect Achille Salvagni, which marks a renewed focus on bespoke commissioning and yacht design for the Italian shipyard. With these two yachts, Rossinavi celebrates its point of difference as a super yacht atelier by exploring the rarity of individual components and emphasising materiality and style.

ENDEAVOUR II AND AURORA USING TRADITIONAL AND NOBLE MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES - FROM ITALIAN CARRARA MARBLE TO HAND-WOVEN TATAMI FLOORING FROM JAPAN – SALVAGNI CHANNELS THE ESSENCE OF A RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR IN THESE DESIGNS AT SEA.

An image from the designer's moodboard that inspired the project

Taking inspiration from the owners’ affinity for East Asian culture and philosophies – specifically Japan and their passion for Asian art – the interiors of Endeavour induce a sense of serenity and sophistication. Salvagni subtly channels an almost zen-like aesthetic through neutral materials and design details across all cabins and decks of the vessel. Inspired by Japanese bamboo gardens, circular oak columns of varying sizes panel the walls and form doorways. Lacquered, blood red accents punch through the neutral palette. Woven silk fabric in an earthy hue is sandwiched between glass to create screen-like doors to the showers and toilets.

“This design is a completely new approach to yacht interiors,” explains Achille Salvagni. “It is the dominance of linearity over the curve that seeks to further emphasise its restrained elegance and simplicity. We used unique materials from limed oak walls to traditional tatami floors, custom made in Japan, to create a minimal, almost monastic language across the vessel.”

Endeavour II is distinctive for the owner’s suite, which has a large balcony and floor to ceiling windows offering spectacular panoramas. The yacht also has a dismountable veranda that unfolds from the rear of the boat and opens up above the water to increase the useable space, bringing the indoors outside. The two VIP cabins in the lower deck can be transformed into one large suite by opening the adjoining double sliding doors.

Further emphasising a quiet elegance, a striking feature of this vessel is its sound absorption properties. Aesthetically, this is seen in sound proofing materials from flooring to insulation. Sustainability factors have also been considered and Endeavour II is equipped with an electrical motor powered by diesel generators that guarantee nearly silent movement, optimisation of energy consumption, and allows for long range cruising around the world.

Aurora, a 49m aluminium super yacht, originally known by the codename Longitude, is the expression of the owner’s passion for sport and adventure combined with a luxuriously detailed and modern interior living space. Car-racing cues and sporty elements are exaggerated and expanded to superyacht proportions. Aurora features a spacious, open concept layout, with three large social areas, including a sunbathing area or “beach saloon”. The beach area precedes a recessed but completely open dining space that maintains maximum privacy without compromising the benefits of the exposure to the outdoors. This yacht has multiple expansive windows offering impressive panoramic views, the result of two “cuts,” like two vents in a sports car, along the bow of the boat.

Aurora’s two owners’ cabins, each with unobstructed views of the water, are equipped with large balconies (55 sqm), ideal for al fresco dining.

The garage is capable of accommodating all the trappings of a true sportsman at sea – including two tenders, a number of jet skis and scuba diving equipment.

“Aurora reflects the active lifestyle of the owners, in the sporty look and feel of this 156-foot vessel,” explains Salvagni. “What is remarkable is that we have married normally opposing aesthetics – a sporty elegance and fluid, modern sensuality – and have created a real sense of home for them.”

Salvagni has infused the interiors of Aurora with a number of luxurious, unexpected materials, including limed sycamore veneer walls, dark polished ebony details and brushed natural teak flooring that peaks out from under custom hand knotted silk carpets.

Salvagni ensures the most relevant and cutting-edge technologies, including LED lighting, an 80” curved 4K UHD television, fully functioning sauna and 120” LED wall cinema are seamlessly integrated into the design. Even the impressive wine cellar, with space for 500 bottles, has state-of-the-art temperature controls and password protection for the exclusive use of the owner.

DISCOVER PROJECT MAIA THE LATEST 50M STEEL DISPLACEMENT MOTORYACHT BY HESESEN YACHTS. AFTER THE SUCCESS OF ANN G, CLIFFORD DENN AND REYMOND LANGTON TOGETHER AGAIN FOR THE CREATION OF A COMPLEX AND SOPHISTICATED DESIGN.

U

nveiled in March, Project Maia is the latest project by Heesen Yachts, a 50m steel hulled, full-displacement motoryacht below the 500GT threshold. She has accommodation for 10 guests in 5 staterooms, master suite on the main deck forward, four guest suites, 3 doubles and one twin on the lower deck. Crew accommodation is for 10 in 5 cabins.

"THEY HAVE CREATED A BEAUTIFUL, CLASSIC AND HOMELY DESIGN THAT WORKS BOTH AS A COMFORTABLE AND ELEGANT PRIVATE YACHT BUT, CAN ALSO ACCOMMODATE CHARTER GUESTS IF SO DESIRED", STATES THE SHIPYARD.

Powered by two MTU 1,000 kW engines Project Maia will reach a top speed of 15 knots and will have a range of 3,800nm at cruising speed of 12 knots. At 10 knots the fuel consumption will be 95 L/h and at maximum speed (15 knots) it will be 390 L/h. Project Maia just entered the outfitting period at Heesen shipyard in Oss, and will be available for delivery in 2018 after intensive sea trials in the North Sea.

Established in 2001 by the talented design duo of Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton, both of whom already had over a decade’s experience in the superyacht industry, the studio is committed to creating designs that are as beautiful as they are functional whilst, at the same time, ensuring their clients’ expectations are not only met but exceeded, with projects being delivered on time and on budget. Coming from different creative backgrounds, the team’s individual blend of skills and professional expertise are complementary, resulting in a remarkable and much sought after design team delivering unquestionable quality with superb attention to detail.

Maia’s tenders are carried on the fore deck where they can be easily and quickly deployed, and allow for a luxurious beach club, complete with a bar, sauna and pulsating sound system.

Project Maia’s naval architecture and engineering is done by Heesen’s in-house talented and uberexperienced team.

After the success of the award winning interior of Ann G, Heesen Yachts has reconfirmed the team of Reymond Langton for the creation of the interiors.

CLIFFORD DENN is the name behind the complex exterior design. The studio, based in Biot (France) has perfectly translated Heesen's DNA through the gorgeous, flowing but simple lines, adding original design elements to give the boat a unique and distinctive look.

Car enthusiasts will easily recognize how Project Maia’s exterior lines are inspired by contemporary and classic car design. The grilles on the main deck aft fashion plates, for example, are only one of the many design details that lend “contemporary” appeal.

Heesen’s traditional pelican bow, with its reversed sheer line, is perfectly integrated into the curvaceous shapes introduced by Clifford Denn for a timeless yet sporty look. Outdoor spaces are carefully thought to maximise the balance between the yacht’s interior volumes and exterior spaces. The result is 250 square metres of deck space arranged over three levels. Sun deck statistics? More than 68 square metres of space and an overall length of 16 metres for guests to enjoy and relax. INTERIORS AND STYLE

Purity and lightness. Light and elegance. The interior style of Project Maia shows a simply and harmoniuos design in terms of lines and spaces, with a sophisticated combination of sought-after materials.: wood in light and dark tones, enriched by decorative elements and accessories in silver and dark blue, for a result that clearly talks about contemporaneity. The Reymond Langton Studio about the style of Project Maia:

The design intent was to create a comfortable and elegant yacht with a sleek, clean and modern design weaved together with restraint and subtlety. The interior architecture is a warm and inviting contrast between bleached oak and stained walnut, with clean, simple lines combined with a subtle graphic motif that runs throughout the yacht, and texture created with softly faceted surfaces and textured metal inlays. The design is softened with pale taupe leather and fabrics, with colour highlights introduced in artwork feature panels, fabrics and furnishings.

SILVER IS BACK

Silver — lustrous and luminous — was for many centuries a marker of household wealth. In the past 40 years, after having been used for centuries as centrepiece for many royal banquets, silver lost its lustre and became a slightly forgotten, unfashionable material. Recently though, that has begun to change, with younger customers returning to the market and a growing interest in handcrafted pieces with a story and provenance driving demand for silver pieces in the living spaces. Silver seems to be very difficult to integrate. Which are the rules for this kind of materals?

As with many things, balance is key. Silver has been used throughout the yacht in a variety of ways – in contrast with dark wood and stone, and to compliment lighter woods and leathers. There is also a variety of textures, with smooth, reflective surfaces and textured panels integrated into the architecture, and as accents on furniture. It allows the silver finish to become a feature of the design used throughout the yacht yet keep it fresh and engaging.

GREEN EMERALD

Bold and brilliant. Also natural, if we thing of the depth of the sea. Rich and fertile, if we thing of the rain forest. Green emerald is one of those colours that favourably attract our attention. Just think, for example, of a magnificent necklace in platinum and emeralds. This colour gives the interiors a striking accent, both daring and sophisticated, a splash of color able to enhance all the tones and shades of a natural white room. Which is the key to interpretaion of the interiors of Project Maia?

Hints of colour have been used to give to the different areas of the yacht their own character without needing to alter the underlying architecture of the design. The rich emerald accents used in the owner’s suite compliment the natural tones of the bleached oak and dark walnut, along with bronze and coffee accented fabrics, to give a relaxed and inviting atmosphere that seamlessly blends with the contemporary nature of the overall design.

young scientist named Charles Darwin journeyed to the Galapagos Islands in 1835. What he discovered there would change his life forever, and the theories that his visit inspired would change the way we human beings see ourselves fundamentally. Darwin and his scientific findings are embedded in the Pikaia Lodge concept: "We respect, appreciate and take inspiration in Darwin’s work and the inspiring surroundings of the Galapagos islands, and we strive to pioneer the evolution of environmentally sustainable tourism." The resort is perched on top of two extinct volcanic craters and offers one of the most spectacular view points in the Galapgos. The resort is conceived as a center for adventurous and educational experiences, enabling guests to escape and be mesmerized by the islands’ sights and sounds, and at the same time providing education on the archipelago’s unique ecosystem. Š Michael S. Nolan During five weeks in Galapagos, Darwin was exposed to the rich variety of animal life and the geological features unique to the archipelago. Darwin noticed that each island supported its own subspecies of animals which were closely related but differed in important ways. "The distribution of tenants of this archipelago", he wrote, "would not be nearly so wonderful, if for instance, one island has a mocking-thrush and a second island some other quite distinct species... But it is the circumstance that several of the islands possess their own species of tortoise, mocking-thrush, finches, and numerous plants, these species having the same general habits, occupying analogous situations, and obviously filling the same place in the natural economy of this archipelago, that strikes me with wonder."

© Michael S. Nolan Over 180 species of bird have been recorded within the Galapagos, and many of these are unique to the islands because of their evolutionary isolation. This makes the archipelago a bird enthusiast’s paradise. While touring the islands on your Galapagos yacht charter, you can typically expect to see numerous variants of Darwin’s finches, Galapagos mockingbirds, flamingoes, Galapagos penguins, blue footed boobies and the distinctive frigate bird with its balloon-like inflatable red gullet.

The Galapagos and its surrounding marine reserve are Natural World Heritage sites of UNESCO. The marine reserve is one of the Seven Underwater Wonders of the world and the second largest protected marine reserve, after the Australian Great Barrier Reef. Pikaia Lodge combines the best of the two worlds: a 14-room resort on an extinct volcano that offers all comforts, from its luxury interiors to the sophisticated restaurant, from the infinity pool, spa and gym to the 100-foot-long motor yacht available for excursions.
