EDITORIAL

Wonderland In this issue we wanted you to dream through fairy adventures, in the literal sense of the word. We looked at these magical atmospheres as a parallel reality, that juxtaposes the oniric dimension and the real world, where luxury becomes the tool through which fantasy and creativity take shape in a landscape inhabited by mystic, mythological and mysterious figures. We drew inspiration from the key-elements of the most emblematic novel of the literary non-sense genre, Alice in Wonderland, and hosted in our pages its most iconic protagonists with the role of storyteller.

The issue opens with a tribute to the photography of Gian Paolo Barbieri and to the exquisite and unparalleled creativity of Alessando Michele (Gucci). And like every good fairy tale, the story brings the reader to the heart of the narration, passing through an enchanted forest (Hermès), where enigmatic elements such as a chessboard, playing cards and a labyrinth, come to life (PLH) almost like they wanted to suggest the reader that before going on, he has to play. Edoardo Tresoldi and Stefano Curto contribute with their skillful artistic boldness to create landscapes that border the sublime. The Missoni colours give life to mythological beasts while Jotun provides the material element necessary to colour our story: the paint.

The illustrations by Dominique Murphy adorn the covers of three key-chapters where art, magic and fantasy are the deus ex machina that leads the creative mind in the universe of the Wonderboats, to the discovery of the world of 3d scale models and towards the earthly realm of three eclectic characters in design: Giangi Razeto, Lapo Elkann and Peter Marino. Elsea, the Divine, appears as a queen in the heart of the narration, to leave in the spotlight, some pages further on, a real, flesh-and-blood queen in the world of design, Kelly Hoppen. The story continues with a pleasant and peaceful navigation on board two amazing sailing vessels (Ngoni and Seven) to bring us back, at the end of our journey, to our real life, to our job, but fortunately mine includes a 100m yacht design concept developed with Feadship (Pam De Glam). And yours? :) Happy reading, Down the Rabbit Hole!

One sleepy afternoon while playing chess by herself, Alice saw the real Red Queen through the looking glass. She pondered what the world was like on the other side of a mirror's reflection. She poked at the wall-hung mirror behind the fireplace and discovered, to her surprise, that she was able to step through it to an alternative world.

STEFANO CURTO

STEFANO CURTO IS AN ITALIAN ARTIST SPECIALISED IN WORKS WITH LIGHTS AND CRYSTALS. HE HAS RECENTLY COLLABORATED WITH DOMINATOR FOR SOME ARTISTIC PIECES CHOSEN FOR THE INTERIORS OF THE NEW ILUMEN M/Y CADET V.

B

orn in 1966 in Segusino (TV), he started out as a setter of crystals, undertaking complex jewelry designs and eyewear for haute couture labels. In 2004 he decided to start his artistic creation and with these words he explained this choice: "I needed to give a new soul to the stardust and the minerals that I love so much and never tired of looking at. I had something to say and had a palette of which I knew the most intimate and little secrets: I could start to create works of art. During six long years I worked behind closed doors, completely focused in forging eight artworks. They were all presented for the first time in Venice in September 2010”. The exhibition Trama Lucente led to a purchase of the work in black stone, Il Nero Infinito, by the MONA Museum in Australia, and to an invitation to show in London. “I was invited to exhibit between Picasso, Manet, Cézanne, Hirst, Banksy and Richter”.

PLAYING WITH GEMS

THETART TWO, detail, 2016

The selection is helped by a database he specifically developed for this purpose. He then chooses the gems and crystals with symbolic colours and puts them by hand on different supports (most of them in plexiglass). “White light represents purity and hope, black is mystery. And color? Simply the happiness of the journey”. The result is a singular artwork: huge, fluid pieces of crystalline magic that seem in perpetual motion. Next June 2018 Dominator will present the new 28m Ilumen M/Y Cadet V. On board there will be some pieces by Stefano Curto. © Dominator

Stefano Curto started his artistic life as a vocation, moved by the need to give new life to the gems. He has many times explained his fascination with the light, and his passion for craftsmanship, something that derives from his family background. “The sparkle of the gems fascinated me instantly. It was like having stars in my hand”. In the Curto's artworks there are many references to Gothic and Indian mysticism for the light and the meticulous process referring to the Mandala. In Gothic Art light is always connected with the divine image; it has a mysterious soul and it enhances the spiritual feeling inside the church thanks to the beautiful colours it radiates in the interior environments. For this reason Curto's artworks are considered spiritual and perceived as a new exploration of the universe, where the force of nature joins the spirit. His art originates questions about the universe, the mysticism and the meaning of existence and encourages the viewer to explore their own spirituality. “I’ve always found it hard to drag my eyes away from crystals”, says Curto. "The hope and projection of immortality they conjure up is transcendental”. His artworks are included in several collections: his Black Shroud, one of his most prized pieces, is today part of the Pontifical Collection, after being displayed at the art exhibition Renewal Of the Sacred in London in 2013. Curto's technique reflects his passion for the meditation and his past as craftsman. He has a meticulous and laborious technique; first he chooses the crystals or the gems that can maximize the light refracting properties.

EDOARDO TRESOLDI BETWEEN US AND THE SPACE

HIS WORKS ARE A TRIBUTE TO THE BEAUTY AND COMPLEXITY OF OUR TIME. WITH THE USE OF THE INDUSTRIAL MATERIALS, TRESOLDI CREATES A NEW PERCEPTION OF THE SPACE, LETTING US ENTER IN DIALOGUE WITH THE NATURE.

T

he spatial interventions by Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi, which have as a feature the use of a poor and industrial material, have fascinated the whole world so much that he got the privilege to be mentioned by Forbes among the 30 most influential European artists under 30.

Edoardo Tresoldi transforms rough wire mesh into delicate sculptures, as tribute to the beauty and complexity of the modern world. His spacial interventions in form of translucent sculptures are in full harmony with the landscape elements, despite their unusual material. Tresoldi explains "Working with the wire mesh and then with transparency allows you to create drawings in the landscape". Edoardo Tresoldi is a sculptor and a designer, he creates monumental and figurative wire mesh sculptures of humans, animals and buildings at life size or even larger. He opts for the unobtrusive, metal wire mesh to create astonishingly realistic figurative sculptures. He is used to install his artworks in very particular environments or strategic locations, giving a specific sense of time and place, in order to capture the relations of the human body to the space. The works' meaning is in the intersection beetwen sculpture and scenography.

Edoardo Tresoldi, Locus Š Roberto Conte

as a scenographer and sculptor, which allowed him to experiment different languages and techniques before "playing" with the mesh. However, he also uses other industrial materials, which are his narrative tool to create a dialogue between contemporary art and nature in a sort of visual narration.

To set up his energetic and alive sculptures, Edoardo only uses the wire: the shape of all these different creations then changes according to the context that Tresoldi selects; human figures are very common in all of his installations. Tresoldi uses different languages, from the industrial to the natural one, mixing classical and modern languages. An example of this combination is the restoration of the Basilica paleocristiana of Siponto. Using the wire mesh, the artist designed an architectural landscape consisting of columns and domes that interact with the modern-style aesthetics, letting the visitor enter the original architecture that once characterized that place; as final result, the visitor lives a sort of art Š Alessandro Villa experience deeper than the contemplation of a ruin. He reintroduces the shapes of the original architecture, reignites the memory, but at the same time he accompanies the visitor in a new experience and perception of the space contaminated by the contemporary landscape.

His artworks create negative spaces between nature and wire mesh, allowing the eye to fill naturally what the wire form suggests. Tresoldi's wire meshes are transparent and only black and white, to create optical illusion and to appear translucent from a distance.

In April Tresoldi will create a site specific installation for Coachella, a very famous music and arts festival in California.

He starts his career

SETTING NEW STANDARDS OF LUXURY

by

Missoni, HOROSCOPE Collection

by Caroline Clarke

THE COLOURS' ADVENTURES WHEN ART IS HIDDEN BETWEEN THE LINES AND MOVEMENT IS CREATED THROUGH THE ENERGY OF THE COLORS. MISSONI HOME HOROSCOPE COLLECTION IS THE RECENT CREATION FOR THE INTERIOR DECORATION LAUNCHED BY THE ITALIAN LUXURY BRAND, INSPIRED BY THE CHINESE HOROSCOPE.

T

Mr Missoni once wrote that he created a chromatic harmony by adding a third color to two clashing ones. “Color?” he wrote. “What can I say? I like comparing color to music: Only seven notes and yet innumerable melodies have been composed with those seven notes. How many basic colors are there? I don’t remember exactly, seven perhaps, like the notes of the scale, but how many tones or shades does each color have? An infinite number, just as always endless are the hues and nuances composing a work of art.

Missoni, HOROSCOPE Collection. So many interpretations, all of them desirable. For collectors, the figurative cushions, in printed satin or embroidered are a true temptation.

he story behind the HOROSCOPE collection begins in the 80s, when Ottavio Missoni - known as Maestro del Colore (the Master of Colour) and patriarch of the esteemed Italian fashion house - bought a set of boards with the Chinese horoscope signs, featuring the unmistakable touch of eclectic artist Piero Zuffi. These zoomorphic figures, with almost mythological masks are framed like paintings. Alongside are ideograms, designed with a delicate geometric precision and in bas-relief. These symbols from the mysterious East have a scenographic energy that transfers to the choreography of the collection.

The 12 characters from the original artwork (ox, dog, goat, horse, dragon, rooster, rabbit, pig, monkey, snake, tiger and rat) inspired by the lunar calendar, are reproduced with skilful mastery on tactile fabrics; precious tonal and texture effects with lustre and opacity, shades of different intensities and elaborate embroidery.

Printed cotton satin and dense multicolour embroideries feature and large silk “toppers”, like a scarf, decorate the sofas. The theatrical nature of the figurative characters gives spirit to the colourful cushions; this is accentuated as the reverse is in tones of variegated grey. The symbolic figures intertwine with the elusive maze of ideograms. The chiaroscuro is in Yin and Yang balance. The vibrancy of almost silvery tones on the fabric, like a historiated basrelief, confers a lightness to all complements. Missoni has established a concept that went beyond "Made in Italy" to become an international brand. Colour, movement, dynamism and aesthetic have been a constant source of inspiration. The family has built a fashion empire where a piece of clothing is also a work of art.

This is how we now explore and admire the iconic Italian Missoni fashion house. In 2016 The Fashion and Textile Museum in London hosted the exhibition entitled Missoni Art Colour, a dialogue between Ottavio and Rosita Missoni’s creations and the modernist artworks of Sonia Delauney, Lucio Fontana and Gino Severini. 31

J

otun, a global supplier of decorative paints and marine, protective and powder coatings, was founded in 1926 by Odd Gleditsch Sr., a Norwegian business entrepreneur. He started to develop his talent for business when he opened a paint distributor's shop in 1920. It was a good time for the whaling industry, and Gleditsch soon worked his way into the business of supplier to the whaling fleets in Sandefjord, Tønsberg, and Larvik. As sales to the whaling fleet increased, Gleditsch saw the pontential in manufacturing the paint himself. At Gimle there was an oil mill which was close to bankrupcy - an oil mill which produced antifoulings and marine paints. The following step was to invite shareholders to subscribe to his new company. With a share capital of NOK 60.000, Jotun Kemiske Fabrik A/S was founded and bought the plant of Gimle Oljemølle A/S, with Odd Gleditsch as managing director. Today quality and other values such as loyalty, care, respect and boldness, continue to be at the core of their global business. The Jotun Group has an operating revenue of NOK 15,8 billion (â‚Ź1,6 billion) and 9,789 employees. They are present with 64 companies in 45 countries and 40 production facilities in 24 countries. The company is family controlled and boasts a longterm business approach. Jotun operates in 4 different business segments, according to the different use and application of their products: decorative paints (39% of the total turnover), marine coatings (27%), protective coatings (24%) and powder coatings (10%). Their R-D centres are located worldwide and employ more than 250 chemists and technicians whose main focus is to continue to develop more and more innovative solutions, to confirm their leading position as a real benchmark in the sector. THE MARINE INDUSTRY - Jotun supplies powder and performance coatings for the exterior protection and decoration of yachts

and superyachts worldwide, working across the whole yachting segment, from new build and yacht refit projects to dry docking. Thousands of hours are spent on the research and development of each and every Jotun yacht product in order to improve existing technologies, explore and develop new technologies and focus on a greener future; all whilst protecting pleasure yachts and luxury superyachts from the harsh marine elements. Apart from the general appearance, Jotun Megayacht coatings are also designed to protect superyachts whether they are made of steel, aluminium, wood or composite. All Jotun coatings are extensively tested to ensure durable protection from weathering, degradation, fouling, corrosion and mechanical abrasion. Jotun also provides a variety of colour collections across the range to match all requirements of the yachting industry. With the Jotun Multicolor tinting system there is an almost unlimited choice of topcoat colours available, which can be colours matched or custom-made to any requirements, helping to achieve a truly unique finish for any yacht.

Jotun customers benefit from the expertise of the Jotun technical services and a specialist Superyacht coatings advisor, who is trained to support any project to ensure the final finish and long-term protection of the yacht. The company works together with yacht owners, captains, managers, shipyards and naval architects, in order to deliver a service beyond expectations and offer the customer complete peace of mind. SEA OWL | FEADSHIP, 2013

ELYSIAN | LÜRSSEN, 2014

We couldn't find a better example of Wonderboat. Sea Owl is the unforgettable and iconic Feadship 62-metre custom yacht built in 2013. One of the best masterpieces by Andrew Winch (and maybe also the most complex project he has ever developed), who was chosen as designer for the interiors, with the mission to create a sophisticated bespoke motor yacht around a precise thematic decorative scheme dedicated to the children.

M/Y Elysian was built as Ester III at Lürssen Yachts and delivered to her owner in 2014. She is a 66m luxury yacht with eclectic interiors designed by Reymond Langton Design and exteriors by world recognized designer Espen Øino. Elysian's interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 cabins, comprising a master suite, 3 double cabins and 2 twin cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 17 crew members onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Sea Owl is one of the best expressions of what custom means: a build whose design is created together with the owner, around his inspirations and passions. For this extraordinary project the impressing, highly aesthetic standards have led to the final result: a really unique, personal and enchanting boat. The theme chosen for the interior design tells the stories of several fairy tales, from Peter Pan to Alice in Wonderland, as inspiration elements for the décor and for the personalisation of each room.

Reymond Langton Design is a highly experienced and professional design studio that has been involved in the exterior styling and interior design of some of the world's finest superyachts, working on projects ranging between 42 and over 100m.

Elysian's have the same classic, imposing and majestic atmospheres as a huge Fairy-Tale Castle. The main salon has been developed around the warmth of the fireplace and the bookcase gives the space that genuine family touch, able to overshadow the extremely luxurious design.

A real family-yacht specifically dedicated to the children and to all those guests who haven't lost the will to dream. On the lower deck is a delightful pirate-themed room; next to this is one of the daughters’ cabins with scenes from Alice in Wonderland. The playful décor sounds like magic and reveals an unparalleled level of artistry that even adults can not help but admire. The decorations are incredibly complex and full of a vast number of details. The central stairway is the most impressive element, featuring a mural, carved from Peruvian mahogany, of a magical tree rising four decks high in one continuous design, the roots grounded in the lower deck’s sole and branches reaching the sun deck.

"Reading" the interiors of Sea Owl is like going "Down the Rabbit Hole" (Alice in Wonderland): a deep, almost surreal, immersion into an oniric world made by so many details that we end up losing the sense of reality within our bucolic, fairy fantasy, sometimes it is totally abstract but for this reason so much delightful for our heart.

A CIRCLE OF MAGIC

When designers face the world of pure custom yachts, they can reach the highest level of personalisation and give birth to projects that have an incredible story to tell. Each of these three yachts are tales rich in magic and fairy details, able to let you enter into a fantastical novel.

The centrepiece of Lürssen’s highly original superyacht Elysian, is the elevator and the stairway that surronds it. As in any castle, stairs represent a magical element, almost mysterious. In front of them, one wonders what secrets are hidden on the upper deck and step by step walks up the stairs with the eyes looking up, lost in the wonder that gradually appears along the walls wrapping the stairway: refined tones and colours shading from white to brown, carved leather featuring cranes in flight and bronzed banister. The children's suites show a classical look, each with a different colours and fabrics scheme.

In the spa area the mosaic art graces the walls and floors, alternating with different kinds of finely decorated marbles.

OCEANCO Oceanco is a world-class builder of custom superyachts in the 80–140 meters range. Every yacht starts with a vision, the owner's vision. The yard 's forward thinking and experienced in-house design team works with an array of world-acclaimed designers such as Terence Disdale, Nuvolari-Lenard, Espen Øino, Sam Sorgiovanni, Igor Lobanov, Tim Heywood and Andrew Winch to create some of the most iconic, timeless, and award-winning yachts afloat today. Oceanco yachts benefit from stateof-the-art engineering and every detail proposed in their highly innovative systems is thought out and tested.

The yacht selected for the following picture gallery can not be officially presented with her name and description. It is one of the most sophisticated build of the Oceanco fleet and expression of an exquisite design. We could appreciate this creation during the recent Dubai International Boat Show. On this occasion the shipyard also unveiled the innovative design of a nearly 400-foot-long superyacht concept named Tuhura, result of a collaboration with the Lobanov Design studio, BMT Nigel Gee, and interior designer Achille Salvagni. Oceanco has the privilege of having delivered (2017) the largest motor yacht ever built in the Netherlands - 110m M/Y Jubilee. Last year Oceanco also added to their fleet the groundbreaking 106-metre Project Solar known as Black Pearl, one of the most acclaimed new builds of 2017, an impressive sailing vessel whose design and naval architecture has seen the collaboration of Dykstra Naval Architects, Ken Freivokh Design and Nuvolari Lenard. 41

ELSEA, LADY OF PURITY

AGGRESSIVE BUT DELICATE. PROUD BUT GENTLE. M/Y ELSEA AND HER DOUBLE. THE STORY OF A UNIQUE BOAT THAT RAISES THE BAR IN THE 50M RANGE. SUPERYACHT DIGEST |

April 2018

M/Y Elsea represents the first step made by the Carrarabased yard in their new venture they decided to explore: the world of the "off-series" models. Elsea is the first CCN build as bespoke project, the first to cruise around the globe for their Fuoriserie line. And it just so happens, she is also a product of extraordinary beauty and depth of luxury. Slender, look strong, majestic pride and...

. . with the same sophisticated elegance as a lady with a tiny turned-up nose. .

M/Y Elsea is a 50-metre boat shrouded in an atmosphere of untrammelled hedonism and unabashed sentimentality.

Launched last year and successfully exhibited at the autumn's key boat shows, her all-aluminum semi-planning hull and exterior styling was designed by Studio Bacigalupo in cooperation with Studio Vafiadis, the creative mind behind the interior design. Elsea has a dynamic, cool personality, with a strong focus on outdoor spaces, endowing this yacht with an informal allure while preserving its allpervasive refined elegance. The exterior areas have a very Mediterranean style and draw inspiration from the French Riviera lifestyle, with a bar and a day toilet in both the outdoor salons and the beach club, as well as an audio system fitted with loudspeakers that could easily compete with those of the loudest Ibiza clubs. And there is more: the wide sunbathing area and the comfortable loungers around the swimming pool make this area ideal to have fun, swim and relax.

In terms of performance, Elsea, near to 500 gross tonnage, can ensure a maximum speed of up to 30 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots thanks to 3x MTU engines 16V2000M94.

Founded in 1997 and focused on semi-custom yachts, Cerri Cantieri Navali, became part of the Gavio Group in 2011. The yard, which is specialised in the range between 30 and 50 meters in length, is now targeting at a bespoke production based on no more than 3-to-4 boats per year but with the highest level of quality. Currently under way at the yard there are a 40 metre explorer for an American owner, a 27 metre triple jet yacht for Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli and a 31 metre hybrid project.

The interiors explicitly draw inspiration from the deco style, reinterpreted in a modern key. This fascinating parallelism is obtained through the use of mirroring surfaces and fine woods which, together with stylish steel details, highlight the bold shapes of the interiors and create a fascinating contrast between the different materials. Onyx, Lalique details and precious fabrics add luxury to all areas and perfectly integrate with the furniture and furnishings, which have been made even lighter thanks to cutting-edge technological solutions that allow the boat to achieve outstanding speeds – a key feature for a yacht in this class. Worth mentioning are also the two salons, each with its own personality. The first, located on the main deck, is more formal and is furnished with a table seating 12 people; the second (this page), on the upper deck, welcomes guests to its warm, cosy atmosphere and to a large round sofa that makes this room the ideal place for pure relaxation. The semi-circular shape of the sofa recalls the same circular pattern of the soft ceiling, whose leather material is pierced with tiny light inserts.

Welcome to the world of Lalique. All the interiors are an opulent narration. As Stefano Vafiadis explains, the owners asked for luxurious ambiance. The designers, together with the owners, chose a combination of pieces from the best furniture collections: Visionnaire, Fendi, Lalique and Arreda Italia. As to the decoration elements and materials, Sahco, Dedar, Hermès, Foglizzo Leather, Lalique crystals, were the choice.

THE NAME LALIQUE EVOKES THE BRILLIANCE OF JEWELLERY, THE WONDER OF TRANSPARENCY AND THE BRILLIANCE OF CRYSTAL. BEFORE IT BECAME A BRAND NAME, IT WAS THE NAME OF A MAN, AN ARTIST OF GENIUS, REN -JULES LALIQUE AND OF HIS HEIRS WHO SHARED HIS CREATIVE FLAME.

René Jules Lalique was an artist, designer, jeweler, innovator, glassmaker, industrialist, a visionary. Born in France in 1860 and grew as a glass designer, he was immediatly known for his artistic creations, perfume bottles, vases, jewellery, chandeliers, clocks and automobile hood ornaments. By 1890, Lalique was recognized as one of France's foremost Art Nouveau jewellery designers. In the 1920s, he became noted for his work in the Art Deco style. Both unique and commercial works of René Lalique are in the collections of a large number of public museums around the world.

Rene Lalique's car mascot creations are legendary to this day, and can sell for well over $200,000 for the rarest of his works. Lalique's Glass car mascots (hood ornaments) are the most sought after of all car mascots, not just by collectors of RLalique, but also by general glass collectors

and antique car collectors. The most expensive and fanciest cars of his day were adorned with one of his mascots and even today his mascots grace the hoods of some of the greatest cars of the early 20th century at car shows, in private collections, and in automobile museums. After the death of René Lalique his son Marc began operating as M. Lalique, and then Cristal Lalique. Marc did away with the famous Lalique Glass, and changed the output from glass to a heavier lead crystal.

Today, the output of René Lalique, commonly referred to by his moniker, RLalique, is highly sought after in many different fields of collecting. Over 60 years after his death, there is worldwide activity every day in the works of this prolific industrial artist.

WHEN BUILDING A YACHT MEANS BEING PART OF A FAMILY

L

THE OWNER OF FEADSHIP M/Y LETANI FELT PART OF THE FEADSHIP FAMILY FROM THE KEEL LAYING AND AT THE LAUNCH CEREMONY STATED "BUILDING A FEADSHIP HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE”.

ast year in March, Feadship launched the 35-metre motoryacht Letani for a client resident in the Far East. Designed to allow access to shallow waters and smaller marinas in Europe, Scandinavia, the Indian Ocean and Asia, this new Feadship set a new record of just over two years for the time between the first meeting with the client and the launch.

The launch of Letani was a true family affair as one of the youngest Feadship owners to date celebrated the culmination of a long-held ambition. “I’ve been privileged to be on various different superyachts over the last ten years”, told the owner to the assembled workforce at Feadship’s Aalsmeer yard during the christening ceremony. “Every time I see a Feadship come by I had two feelings: one, ‘that’s a very special yacht’, and two, ‘I want to get off my boat and step on the Feadship’. It is very exciting that I now get to board my very own Feadship for the first time".

Letani serves as a masterclass of design and construction, with an unprecedented level of sophistication for a yacht in this size bracket. The length and shallow draught of the vessel are very much linked to the intended use of exploring various parts of the world that are often out of reach to larger superyachts while retaining Feadship standards of quality. When the owner decided to build his first Feadship, he asked for a superyacht with Feadship standards of quality, that would be able to access shallower waters and smaller marinas than the larger Feadships in the fleet. The owners mainly cruise with their family on voyages of exploration in a wide range of different environments all over the world. This use is clearly reflected in many aspects of the 77

design and layout, created by the owners together with their representative on the project, James Hutchinson. The result is a masterpiece of design and construction which offers an unrivalled degree of sophistication for a 35-metre superyacht.

As a result, Letani truly feels like the home from home that she was intended to be. With her contemporary profile and elegant lines, Letani is a pleasure to behold in aesthetic terms. These good looks are also an intrinsic part of an exterior design which supports top speeds of 20 knots. Her performance is further facilitated by an aluminium hull, while the cuttingedge shape of the bow also provides an additional degree of comfort, as does the installation of zero speed stabilisers. Letani has a contemporary exterior profile with elegant lines and large – often full-length – windows which ensure that the vistas on the outdoor world will be tremendous wherever she may travel. Furthermore, the amount of glass as a proportion of the exterior profile is among the highest ever seen on a Feadship. Letani’s open decks provide maximum entertainment and flexibility for the family and their guests. Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design and Studio Liaigre worked in close collaboration to create a warm, comfortable and liveable apartmentlike interior with clean and minimal detailing. A calm atmosphere prevails with smoked eucalyptus combining very well with deeply smoked and washed oak flooring and randomly veneered wall panels. The interior is luxurious without ever becoming pretentious, allowing people to appreciate the views through the giant windows and stay connected to the sea and its surroundings.

Letani’s layout and its functions are also designed around the owners and their family. A fine example is the special TV nook which divides the lounge and dining room. As the television is on a swivelling bracket it can also be viewed from a saloon area geared to gathering people together in a restful manner. The dining area has an informal French bistro ambience, with a tapered table and long banquette.

Open decks provide maximum entertainment and flexibility for all who step on board. The sundeck fly bridge is especially spacious, spanning almost the complete length of the yacht. It is divided into different areas for a variety of uses and times while always making it easy for people to find shade. The foredeck is a popular place to oversee Letani’s progress while cruising and chatting to the captain at the helm. An ’S’ shaped banquette offers various alternatives during the day, including a drinks area with a round table which looks like a bistro terrace and a small rectangular table where a group of 3/4 people can enjoy breakfast. A central dining table is the ideal spot for an outdoor family breakfast, lunch or dinner. Two large sofas aft provide a comfortable lounging/ sunbathing haunt with great views of the sea.

ECO-CHIC, C'EST CHIC! M/Y HYHMA

Š Cantiere delle Marche | Photographer: Maurizio Paradisi

THE LATEST BUILD IN THE NAUTA AIR RANGE EXPRESSES AN ECO-CHIC STYLE REFLECTING THE PURPOSE THE YACHT WAS BUILT FOR: RESPECTFULLY EXPLORING AND LIVING IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.

M

/Y Hyhma is the latest yacht delivered by the Ancona-based shipyard Cantiere delle Marche in the Nauta Air range. With her 111-feet lenght and almost 8 meters of beam, the yacht reaches approximately 320 GRT in volume. The yard explains that for the construction they recruited the most qualified experts at international level to provide a product that could express the highest excellence. The Dutch firm Vripack was involved for the Naval Engineering, while Nauta Yachts Design of Mario Pedol and Massimo Gino signed the exterior and interior design (as for all the yachts of the Nauta Air range). The Nauta Air range represents for CDM the combination of the luxury and the contemporary style of a superyacht together with the solidity and reliability of an explorer yacht. Two values that are perfectly in line with the philosophy of the two partners involved: Nauta Yachts, with which Cantiere delle Marche gave birth to this new range of yachts,

and Vripack, boasting an unparalleled experience in designing yachts capable of extreme navigation.

Hyhma, representing the current flagship of the Nauta Air range, was built for an experienced owner with a great passion for underwater photography, scientific research and study of marine animals. The yacht has been for this reason designed and built with specific characteristics that could provide long permanence on board and an incredible autonomy from the shore. She features a CFD optimized hull with bulbous bow and enhanced scantlings on the hull and rudders for sailing in ice conditions.

In terms of design, Hyhma's exterior expresses sober, elegant and seductive strength. This explorer yacht communicates its uncompromising seaworthiness through straightforward volumes combined with strong and decided lines in elements such as the shapes of the windows and hull portlights. 88

Hyhma’s hull and T-Top are in dark olive green, nicely contrasting with the white superstructure. The sundeck is a key guest area with sunbathing lounges, offering sweeping views and a dining area also usable as a bar. The lounge/sunbathing area on the upper deck is connected through symmetrical lateral staircases to the mooring area on the main deck, specifically furnished with a couch for whale watching - and as the reader can imagine, this was a precise request of the owner. In order to make it more functional and enjoyable, the terrace was also equipped with port and starboard so that guests could look over the side of the yacht to get a closer look or a better photo of the wildlife.

trend. When we decided to start Cantiere delle Marche we based on precise and transversal market analysis. We went from the commercial shipping and the megayacht sector, our strong expertise allowed us to involve mature and expert clients, as well as captains, chief engineers and surveyors. It was the 2008 when, with them, we tried to undestand how the market was evolving in order to enter it with intelligent solutions. So we focused on a very interesting niche of the market, where there weren't so many competitors yet and where

There is also an outdoor dining area for 10 people, shaded by the sundeck’s overhang and connected via large glass doors to the full beam TV lounge with couches and a card table for 4-6 players. This lounge is served by a fully equipped butler’s pantry.

The wheelhouse is generously large and, as per the Owner’s request, features design that recalls luxury sports cars. Hyhma’s interior spaces are similar to the previous builds in the same range, but a little bit larger. The yacht’s interiors are welcoming and comfortable, with an eco chic style that reflects the purpose the yacht was built for: respectfully exploring and living in close contact with the natural environment in complete comfort. The leit motiv chosen to create an elegant and cozy feeling, is the contrast between materials and colours and light and dark tones.

The guest staircase leads to the Main and Lower Decks and winds around a sculpture of two metallic dolphins rotating around each other. As to the beach area, its large opening transom is ideal to use both for easy access to the water and as the perfect space to enjoy a cocktail pieds dans l’eau.

Cantiere delle Marche is among the leading yards specialised in explorer yachts and Hyhma is the perfect combination of aesthetics, reliability, range and technical solutions. We recently met the top management at Cantiere delle Marche and interviewed Vasco Buonpensiere, Sales Director, to discover more about the activities at the yard.

Vasco Buonpensiere (Sales & Marketing Director) and Ennio Cecchini (Founder and CEO)

Q: Cantiere delle Marche provide yachting solutions aimed at the client's satisfaction but also at the ease of use and manoeuvrability. You are leaders in the segment of the explorers, how can you reach this position, considering the small size of the yard? VB: The keys of our success are several and different. First of all, we operate in a precise segment - yachts in steel between 80 and 130 feet). Secondly we started to focus on the explorers in a moment when they were not still a 93

our expertise - a fusion of two different worlds, the commercial and the megayacht sector - could be our winning strenght.

The world of the explorers had had until that time as only protagonists yards from the shipping sector which approached to the megayachts without any specific culture, creating products that hardly could attract those clients used to luxury yachts.

Then we focused on the development of the engineering aspects. We showed a specific ability in over-engineering every detail, in creating real small ships that could cruise at every latitude without any problem. We immediately specialised in products providing top-level finishes, which also helped our growth and led us to our today's success. Furthermore, for every aspect related to the more operational and functional areas - such as those ones dedicated to the crew - we are used to study the best solutions directly with the captains. They boast, in fact, consolidated experiences on board yachts and ships and thanks to their participation in the development of the project, we are able - and that is also the secret of our success - to balance all the elements needed to build an excellent product under all point of views, without any compromise: technical and cruising qualities, comfort and advanced finishes, the crew areas... Q: The Nauta range with 108-feet M/Y Narvalo was mainly characterised by sofisticated and high quality interiors. What are the main features of the interiors of M/Y Hyhma, her bigger sistership?

VB: Both yachts proudly come from the successfull cooperation between Cantiere delle Marche and Nauta Yachts, one of the most appreciated design studios worldwide, which has had also the privilege to design the current world's largest megayacht, M/Y Azzam.

As to Hyhma, the brief we received from the owner was very detailled and precise. We had been asked to create a sober yacht, functional but rich in details. The result had to be that kind of boat where style was "whispered", I mean, as in a poem, you do not need to shout out the lines of a poem to create emotions... So we opted for 100% gloss ebony that embellished the bleached oak, pietra serena (Macigno stone) combined

with crystal and steel, and the provoking choice of the carbon in the wheelhouse: here we wanted to distinguish this technical area from the other living spaces but we also wanted to highlight the particular passion of the owner, pilot and collector, for the world of sports cars.

Equally interesting are also the other details related to another passion of the owner: the wildlife photography, in particular the marine mammals. At bow we created specific terraces so that guests could look over the side of the yacht to get a closer look or a better photo of the wildlife, especially when dolphins and whales play with the waves of the bulb; on every deck we created watertight stowages with power sockets for all those times when guests need fully charged cameras ready for use to suddenly capture these amazing animals. Q: On Hyhma 111 Vripack applied special technical solutions in order to allow the yacht to cruise safely even in the northern seas. Can you tell us more, was it a specific request of the client?

VB: At the moment we can not unveil so much, since the boat will be officially presented soon. But I can say that with Vripack we built a yacht that can sail the north-west passage without any problem. Who could make it, after all, better than Vripack who engineered 3 super yachts that have sailed the NW-Passage back and forth? Q: Do you have any project over 500GT under way?

VB: Currently we have 7 yachts under construction, whereof 4 are between 40 and 43 meters in lenght. No, it is not our intention to build bigger yachts, I mean over 499GT. We want to focus our efforts on a production of 3/4 yachts per year. Not more. We target at quality not quantity. Our motto is "We want to be better and better, not bigger and bigger". 94

FUR IS BACK IN THE INTERIOR DECORATION

Courtesy of Sabrina Monte-Carlo

WHAT BETTER EXPERIENCE TO CURL UP IN A SOFT AND WARM FUR PLAID ON A SOFA OR IN BED... AND ENJOY A GOOD BOOK? SABRINA MONTE-CARLO TELLS ABOUT THE RECENT EMERGING TRENDS IN THE INTERIOR DECORATION.

S

abrina Monteleone-Oeino and her team at Sabrina Monte-Carlo, the company specialized in bespoke and high-end indoor and outdoor decoration of villas, yachts and jets, are well aware of the emerging trends and latest collections, with over 21 years of experience. "In the last 10 years, there’s been a transition from a more baroque, eclectic look – using hides and skins to cover for instance antique Louis armchairs – to a more minimalist yet genuine look that’s happening right now" says Sabrina Monteleone-Oeino. The latest winter interior trend has been all about natural and original textures, so fur or faux fur has come back in a big way and used to jazz up sofas, beds or armchairs. "Fur can be a taboo topic – however, there are many fantastic faux options available so you don’t have to use real animal skin to get the look", adds Sabrina. "Even if it's not real fur, the texture and softness are nowadays extremely well imitated; it adds a touch of glamour and chic".

In her numerous showrooms located between Monaco and St Jean Cap Ferrat in South of France, one can find a plethora of fur cushions, throws and rugs. The beautifully soft and shiny Rabbit Chinchilla or Angora skins are mainly used for cushions, and so are Rabbit Zibeline and Fox. These refined furs, real or imitation, exist in a large range of colours and finish to match any interior styles, be it classic, contemporary or design. 97

Cowhides and springbok hides are traditionally used on the floor, being short-haired, thicker and thus more resistant but Sabrina likes using Iceland or Mongolian sheepskins on the floor, equally resistant. With their wavy strands of wool up to 15 centimetres long any bedroom turns into an intimate and welcoming nest, any dining room becomes a fantasy and cloud-built fairy tale scenery, any armchair turns into a plush and inviting cocoon; the furniture seems to be floating above and around these long fluffy locks.

The fur/hide suppliers whom Sabrina works with are all meticulously checked acting against illegal hunting, bad treatment of animals or poaching. The quality of the products is also of high importance and no compromises can be made on this point either. As far as faux fur is concerned only the best real and feel resembling items have been selected to work with, coming from the finest suppliers. The growing use of hides is probably linked to a greater awareness of ethical sourcing methods and the power of social media. “I think social media allows us to access looks and ideas from all over the world; it is a perfect modern tool which also gives me the opportunity to share my passion for decoration", says Sabrina.

"I THINK THAT PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE THE WAY THEY WANT TO DRESS. YOU CAN ALSO NOTE A COMEBACK OF FUR AND ESPECIALLY FAUX FUR IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY". SUPERYACHT DIGEST |

A QUEEN IN DESIGN

KELLY HOPPEN'S WORLD, 40 YEARS OF ICONIC CAREER WITH THOUSANDS OF PROJECTS SPANNING THE LAST FOUR DECADES, KELLY’S PORTFOLIO BOASTS A DIVERSE SELECTION OF PROJECTS, INCLUDING YACHTS.

I

n November 2017 Pearl Yachts - founded in 1997 and now one of the UK’s most prominent shipyards introduced in its range the new Pearl 80, a yacht of 24 meters in lenght and 6 meters in beam, distinguished by impressive manoeuvrability and exceptional comfort. The new model stands out for the large, luxurious spaces and the outstanding levels of comfort, result of the successful collaboration between naval architect Bill Dixon, who developed the exterior, and award winning interior designer Kelly Hoppen, in charge of the interior layout. Following a long-term collaboration with the highly acclaimed Dixon Yacht Design, Bill Dixon has once again provided the distinctive exterior styling and hull design for the Pearl 80. Lines are aerodynamic with a huge focus given to both the large windscreen and the three tiers of glazing seen from each side. The generous strip of continuous windows close to the waterline make for an extremely well illuminated lower deck, whilst on the main deck the effect is of a conservatory roof flooding the galley area with light. Seen from the water, the boat is reminiscent of a dart or an arrow, crafted for speed and efficiency. Construction is in vacuum infused GRP and the yacht features a white gel coat finish. Following client’s request for more discreet service, the laundry, crew accommodation and engine room have a separate access point on the starboard side. Crew are able to access the galley from an external door meaning they don’t disturb guests relaxing in the saloon. Designed to run with two crew, the crew berth is spacious and well-lit for a yacht this size.

OPTIMISED INTERIOR Listening to the feedback from clients, Pearl Yachts has adapted the full beam saloon so that space is entirely dedicated to a lounge area of low modular sofas. “In most boats of this size the saloon is dominated by a large dining area but we found our clients rarely actually ate there, preferring to eat on deck or on shore,” explains, Pearl Yachts’ Managing Director, Iain Smallridge. A seating area alongside the helm and bar further aft provide alternatives. Extensive specialist glazing maximise light to the saloon, galley and internal helm areas creating bright, open spaces. The galley features a rise and fall panel through to the saloon enabling a social aspect to food preparation and fluidity to the space.

On the lower deck, passing through a small entrance hall, is the spacious full beam owner’s cabin. “With the deep V hull and through intelligent design we’ve maximised internal space,” says Smallridge. This means owners get the use of a walk-in closet and a generously proportioned master head. The cabin is flooded with light from panoramic portholes on each side. A sofa and vanity table either side of the large bed and plenty of floor space add to this yacht’s class beating appeal. Further forward are two twin guest cabins with the option to be converted into doubles. Both with En-suite bathrooms, these cabins are exceptional for the large internal window panel they both feature. This design feature dramatically increases the flow of light and sense of space, whilst touch button blinds can be drawn for complete privacy. Both cabins are illuminated by large portholes. The VIP cabin is found in the bow and its large bed is unique in its positioning, placed on an angle allowing full walk-around access, as well as room for a sofa and large walk-in closet. The VIP bathroom is also extremely roomy for a yacht this size. CREATED FOR SUN WORSHIPPERS

When it comes to deck space for socialising and relaxing, the Pearl 80 will not be found wanting. Aware that clients are far more likely to eat on deck than indoors, the yacht boasts three external dining areas; on the flybridge, at the bow and aft of the saloon on the cockpit. Sunbathing pads are located forward on the flybridge and also to the bow. Keeping the extensive entertaining space of the flybridge free from tenders or jet skis was a design priority and consequently they are stowed on the stern, the jet ski in its own garage, and can be launched easily without the deployment of a crane. Once launched, the stern area becomes a large hydraulically lowered bathing platform getting guests close to the water.

PEARL 80 It is equipped with two MAN V12-1800 with V-drives, allowing excellent weight distribution and easier maintenance.

With its deep V high speed planing hull, Pearl 80 delivers impressive manoeuvrability and speeds of up to 35 knots.

TALES FROM THE HEART Chapter 2 by PAMELA PACI Illustration by Dominic Murphy Art dominicmurphytarot.com

by Pamela Paci

THE MAGIC OF A MINIATURE SHIPYARD THE "DRINK ME POTION" IS THE MAGICAL LIQUID YOU NEED TO VIRTUALLY DRINK BEFORE VISITING THE WORLD OF 3D SCALE MODELS. DRINK IT AND YOU WILL DISCOVER HOW MAGIC AND INCREDIBLY SURPRISING ALL THE SMALLEST COMPONENTS ARE. YOU ONLY NEED TO OBSERVE A MODEL AND LOOK AT ALL ITS SMALL FURNITURE AND DECORATIVE DETAILS, TO START TO IMAGINE POSSIBLE STORIES WITH THE SAME CREATIVITY AND SMILE AS A LITTLE CHILD.

T

he "drink me potion" is a magical liquid in Wonderland that has the unusual effect to make the drinker (Alice) shrink in size. When she can't fit through the little door to get into the beautiful garden because she is too big, she magically finds a glass bottle with the paper label "Drink Me". Alice wonders if it is safe to drink it or not, but since the bottle was not marked as "Poison", she decides to drink it. She drinks it until the last drop, finding the liquid absolutely delicious with a flavor of cherry tart, custard, pineapple, roast turkey, toffee and hot buttered toast. After having drunk the entire "Drink Me Potion" she starts to shrink down up to ten inches high, reaching the perfect size to go through the little door and into the beautiful garden. But the little door is locked and Alice is now too small to catch the key lying up on the glass table. She tries climbing up one of the legs of the table to get the key, but the surface is too slippery. After she sits down and starts crying in frustration and scolding herself to stop, she notices a little glass box magically appeared out of nowhere underneath the table. Inside the box she finds a small cake and the words "Eat Me". She eats the entire cake and starts to grow so large that her head strikes against the ceiling.

Then she drinks a little bit of the shrink potion again and goes through the door.

This chapter of the controversial novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, written in 1865 by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, over the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, is considered one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre. The tale plays with logic and it is full of enigmas, mathematical references and concepts. Carroll was a mathematician, after all. Concepts such as proportion, multiplications, numbers, semantic, observation, relationship, abstraction of concepts, non-Euclidean geometry, abstract algebra are all the steps and obstacles the protagonist has to overcome in order to discover the truth. Aren't, perhaps, all of these concepts also behind any kind of design project? Design = mathematics + creativity (sometimes, even illogic, abstract or reasonably revolutionary).

When it comes to the world of 3d scale models, I can't help but think about the relation with the world of Alice. When she becomes so big that everything around her ends up to become a miniature world, my mind returns to the art of scale models and how funny all of these small pieces are. Created with so much accuracy, precision and attention, re-created down to the last tiny detail.

Operating in the production of 3d scale models for the yachting sector, MMG MODEL MAKER GROUP started its activity with a first commission received in 2002. MMG comments: "All the emotions involved were different during the production process. Finally we realized that not only did we enjoy the outcome but we felt an incredible satisfaction in meeting all the client's expectations. We went over and over each detail many times. We aimed at reaching perfection”. The entire project involved 3 month. MMG explained how difficult it was and also very far from the today's approach. The model was replicated without drawings, or cads, or technical support from the design team. The only tool in their hands was just “observation”. After that first commssion, the same client asked the company for a second, then a third model... and so the story of the smallest shipyard in the world began transforming passion into a solid profession.

Today MMG, based in Itri (LT), operates on a surface area of 1400 smq and records an incredible number of yachts commissioned: 1800 yachts and vessels scale models have been delivered so far, whereof 330 have been ordered by international shipyards, 260 represent deliveries to top yacht designers and 70 are concept models requested as support to the technical evaluation during the production phases and tests. Today MMG is known as a young but experienced model maker company composed by talented professionals, has a worldrenowned reputation for high-quality products and provides excellent services.

Specialized in exhibition models, display models (in ureol and plastic), Model Maker Group is a group of professionals able to offer support and knowhow from the simple concept models up to the most challenging and detailed ones.

The company works with the mission to offer the best product based on a perfect mixture of craftmanship and technology in order to give each and every project the closest dimension of real.

"WE FACE THE MOST CHALLENGING REPLICAS WITH RESPONSIBILITY, WHERE UNUSUAL AND UNREPLICABLE BECOME OUR DAILY GOALS. MODEL SCALES HAVE TO REPRESENT THE SAME PERFECTION AS THE FINAL PRODUCT, WITHOUT SACRIFICING ANY DETAILS. LUXURY SELLS DETAILS AND PERFECTION, AFTER ALL; WE HAVE TO MAINTAIN THE SAME LEVEL ALSO IN SCALE".

From the very first steps of the model building process, the entire team of Model Maker Group contributes to the creation of the project, sharing their ideas regarding the best options possible in order to improve the project. Their deep knowledge, together with their passion and skills, allow the team to handle even the most challenging mission. Model Maker Group can not, unfortunatly, for privacy reasons, unveil so much about their work and the list of all the models made so far - including the most iconic yachts - . Visiting their factory, however, is a must experience you can not miss if you are going to have your next 3d scale model made. You will discover a real mini-shipyard facing everyday all the problems and criticalities of a real yard. 113

At Model Maker Group every time they receive a new commission, they are ready to face a new challenge. Every project is unique, and all the team is completely involved with deep responsibility, great attention to all the details and keen to achieve the highest possible standards. "In the yeachting industry - we know - models are a key-element in the sale & marketing activities; it is the first moment the client can see in 3d what he /she is going to buy and build. In this respect, our role becomes strategic. A good replica enhances the projects and supports the commissioner negotiation processes. A non-accurate replica may seriously affect the project’s impact and implementation".

“IF IT CAN BE REAL, WE CAN REPLICATE”

To guarantee the finest definition in details, MMG is specialised in the use of hi-tech machines such as manual lathes, mills, numeric control computers (CNC) and laser machines. However, the information and the plans they receive from the designers and shipyards remain fundamental for the final result: the more details they receive, the more real the final product will look in front the client's eyes. S/Y NGONI "BUILD ME A BEAST"

“I WANT IT EXCITING, RADICAL, EDGY, STUNNING": THESE ARE THE WORDS THAT GREETED THE 58M HIGH-PERFORMANCE SLOOP NGONI THROUGHOUT THE MEDITERRANEAN IN SUMMER 2017.

D

esigned by Dubois Naval Architects and featuring an innovative interior by Rick Baker Ltd, S/Y Ngoni is luxurious as well as "fast and furious". Bold and minimalist, she was realised with impeccable build quality by Royal Huisman.

Ngoni’s sleek and beautifully executed exterior conceals a host of innovative engineering to meet the challenges of marrying a huge, powerful and advanced rig with a slender and easily-driven hull. 119

“This yacht was inspired by an owner looking for the next new. A dream project for a designer”. This comment from the late Ed Dubois would be echoed by Rick Baker Ltd, the interior designers, and by Royal Huisman, who had the privilege of building Ngoni. From the outset, the owner was clear about his intentions:

"BUILD ME A BEAST. DON’T BUILD ME A SHEEP IN WOLF’S CLOTHING. THIS HAS TO BE AN EDGY AND INNOVATIVE WEAPON; FAST AND FURIOUS". SUPERYACHT DIGEST |

The expansive teak foredeck shelters giant flush hatches with continuous, uninterrupted planking to conceal a large tender, a crane, spa pool, sail locker and cooled waste locker. Just forward of the forestay, the guardrails plunge to deck level, obviating the clutter of a pulpit. Aft of the foredeck, the towering carbon mast is one of the world’s three largest one-piece spars ever built, all three having been manufactured by Rondal. All deck hardware is bead-blasted to a uniform titanium look, one of many examples of "attention to detail, in every detail" aboard Ngoni.

The sculpted low profile superstructure centres the design with elegant understatement. Gleaming an authoritative black and disguising four expansive skylights from the external observer, it is constructed from double curved moulded glass at the very limits of current technology. The glass doors slide open to offer a seamless transition – without any change in height of deck or deckhead, simply the inclusion of a teak deck grating – between the cockpit and the deckhouse salon. Electrically operated sliding glass wind breakers ensure the perfect, flexible outdoor environment whatever the conditions at sea or at anchor.

The initial design developed by Dubois - althought it was a dramatic concept - did not meet so much the expectations of the owner, who challenged the designer to push it further. Dubois’ response was the reverse sheer that now defines Ngoni. It began as an exercise in creative expression but it soon became apparent that it also held the key to structural stiffness. Dubois further finessed the hull profile so that the reverse sheer transformed to concave sheer aft of the superstructure – an attractive styling touch that also enhances cockpit visibility. The owner now had what he wanted. A boat of character and personality. More specifically, the owner wanted an exciting contemporary yacht that combined exemplary performance, handling and seakeeping with luxurious amenity, optimising the hull volume. His "less is more" philosophy demanded a highly minimalistic approach, seeking to maximise reliability by minimising complexity; and to enhance elegance and aerodynamic efficiency through a clean, clutter-free aesthetic.

As an experienced owner who likes to helm, he insisted on steering that was light, yet firm and responsive. The wheel had to give him the true feel of the boat under sail. Finally, the yacht, however edgy in presentation, must still accommodate the owner, his family and guests in style and comfort. And it should facilitate, not hinder, the safe and efficient operation of the yacht by the crew. The development of the rig was a major project in its own right and its success is a tribute to the highly productive collaboration between spar builder Rondal (Royal Huisman’s sister company), sailmaker North Sails and CarboLink, together with Dubois Naval Architects and the shipyard team. Beyond these important technical considerations, the style-toorder requirements proved to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the project. The Dubois office, together with the owners’ team, created by far the most extreme style-to-order boom ever seen. The almost 4 m long aft extension of the boom, designed and crafted to follow the profile of the yacht’s stern, created superb visual harmony between the two. An interesting aspect of the project is the boost to aerofoil efficiency resulting from the minimalistic styling. Also for the interiors, the owner had very precise ideas:

"DON’T DESIGN A TRADITIONAL YACHT INTERIOR"

The owner threw an exciting palette of thoughts, experiences and ideas at the Rick Baker team and challenged them to do something special.

"THE SCHEME SHOULD HAVE FLOWING CURVES INTERSPERSED WITH ORGANIC DETAILING AND UNIQUE MATERIALS. THE INTERIOR WAS TO HAVE A MASCULINE FEEL, WHICH WAS TO BE BROKEN UP WITH PUNCHES OF VIBRANT COLOUR. THE USE OF VIVID RESINS, COMBINED WITH SCULPTED METAL SURFACES, WAS TO GIVE AN OVERALL FLUID FEEL THROUGHOUT, HOWEVER EACH AREA WAS TO RETAIN ITS OWN DESIGN IDENTITY." Rick Baker

The selection of materials evolved as the designs came to fruition, with the client finally settling on some wonderful bespoke veneers, and distinctive marble and onyx from Italy. The result is an outstanding example of design originality that delights the eye and provides warm and inviting spaces for the owners and their guests. The owners’ suite, aft, comprises a full-beam stateroom with bespoke built-in furniture, twin doors to an enormous bathroom, a spacious study with its own bathroom and a large gym with an opening hull port in the topsides.

he Perini Navi 60m S/Y Seven is an aluminum ketch, the 3rd in the successful 60m series. Featuring two Panamax aluminium masts carrying a total sail plan of more than 2,000 square metres, Seven is designed and built by Perini Navi, with the input from naval architect Ron Holland and Dante O. Benini & Partners Architects. Seven exemplifies Italian design and craftsmanship and with these words, her owner, the Italian banker Ennio Doris, celebrated the great job made by the yard in order to meet all of his expectations: "I love Perini Navi yachts because they connect us with nature, with the magic of the sea, indescribable sensations like the rustling of the wind, the movement of the waves, nevertheless, without giving up modern conveniences. Seven is not a simple yacht, in fact, when you are onboard a Perini Navi you will discover the true meaning of Made in Italy. Seven is the result of a project characterised by the artistic, creative and aesthetic spirit that uniquely distinguishes Italian excellence in the world. The owner is Italian, the yard is Italian, as is the crew and the architect who designed it – even the flag is Italian". This yacht demonstrates Perini Navi’s commitment to offering owners innovative technology and solutions for performance, uncomplicated sailing and onboard comfort. The interiors of the 60m ketch were designed by Dante O. Benini Architects and Partners, internationally renowned for their cutting-edge projects. Seven features an important lighting design developed by the yard in close collaboration with Videoworks. During our visit on board with Arch. Dante Benini, he explained every element of the design, focusing on the light element - both natural and artificial - and how this is a crucial design tool that allows to elevate the perception of the environment to a more intimate level. Benini believes that architecture and design must not rely on beauty alone. In fact, he believes beauty "must flow from function" to create the well-being of the people whether they are on board a yacht or in a building. In the Perini's history, Seven represents a real milestone. It was the first project developed and built under the new ownership of the Tabacchi family. "S/Y Seven is an important project, a challenge that marked the beginning of the new path undertaken by the company, following on from the agreement between Fabio Perini and the Tabacchi Family, which I am particularly happy about. We strongly believe in the projects we are working on, with the aim of strengthening our offer and keeping intact the tradition, quality and innovation, values that are indispensable for Perini Navi", commented Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of Perini Navi, at the launch ceremony last August.

PETER MARINO

SUPERYACHT DIGEST |

April 2018

On the occasion of Maison & Object 2018 in Paris, Venini presented “Black Belt", the new Limited Edition Collection of vases designed by Architect Peter Marino. Venini once again reiterates its ability to interpret the aesthetic thinking of the most important international creators. The new VENINI “Black Belt” collection is defined by apparently simple geometries, expressed in four shapes of vases, oval, square, triangle and figure-of-eight. Each element is a harmonious play of contrasts between the transparency of the glass, with its slightly hinted nuances in Pink, Green and Tea, and a series of black bands that envelop the vases in unique linear decorations. The collection is limited to 349 works by colour and size.

The extraordinary craftsmanship of VENINI's glass masters is once again at the service of the finest creativity and reveals itself in some of the extremely complex glass-making techniques that have allowed the creation of "Black Belt”. The bands of black glass are pulled and laid hot on the surface of the work, like a sort of graphic signature by Marino. These decorative bands, which integrate themselves into the form thanks to heat, remain distinct and compact, creating a strong visual contrast. The dramatic beauty that accompanies Peter Marino's style is given material form in the “Black Belt” collection. The way of working the raw material itself becomes part of the expressive act, and the VENINI furnaces once again challenge the language of experiment and creative design. petermarinoarchitect.com

"The power of light and materiality are paramount to all my architectural projects – the Black Belt collection of vases evolved from these considerations. The craftsmanship of Venini dates to the 13th century, yet the process allows for designers to realize entirely modern concepts such as these individual works of art". Peter Marino, 2017

House of Dior | Seoul, South Korea The architects wanted the building to represent Dior and to reflect Christian Dior’s work. So they wanted the surfaces to flow, like the couturier’s soft, woven white cotton fabric. These surfaces, which soar into the sky and undulate as if in motion, crossed by a few lines, are made from long moulded fiber glass shells, fitted together with aircraft precision. In Seoul, where the quadrangular buildings align with the avenue, and which are all occupied by leading international fashion labels, the building stands out like a large sculptural tribute to Dior, inviting everyone to step inside. The entrance, where two shells come together, is a sort of modern lancet arch, in which two metal mesh surfaces cross in line with the clothing metaphor. Once inside, the customer makes a succession of discoveries – a feature typical of the interiors designed by Peter Marino.

The Seoul flagship brings the sense of movement and play to the interior, using this notion as a defining thread and design concept throughout the boutique as it continues the sculptural shapes. The undulating aluminum clad curtainwall adjacent to the entry, which is comprised of reflective white plates, functions to draw clientele into the store and through the space. The spiral stair of glass and steel connects all six floors. rom the beginning of the year to date, I met the design team of De Voogt Naval Architects twice, at their offices in Haarlem in January and at the Dubai International Boat Show the following month. On both occasions, we focused on the development of the project in terms of space and size.

Firstly, we decided how to divide all the areas, how much external space was necessary on all decks, how large the owner's cabins should be, where to accomodate all the guests...

At the beginning the first idea was to position the owner's cabin at stern, developing it on two decks. During the design session, we opted, instead, for a different solution, preferring to dedicate to the owner almost the entire upper deck, with a private terrace (aft) and an amazing access to the cabin opening directly from the lift. In the centre of the same deck we find the hammam and the spa, accessible also to the Vip guests on the same deck, who are accomodated in a huge luxurious cabin with two double beds... in case sometimes, you know, you have a couple of friends with children desiring to sleep with their parents or in case your grandparents simply prefer separate beds, or...

The guest area features however the most original design, which could make this project the perfect choice for an ultimate charter experience. The 8 guest cabins are located at stern (between the lower and the main deck), each developed on a double deck with entrance at Level 1. Each cabin is accessible from a central corridor, originating after the Guest Entrance, a dedicated social area equipped with two stairways (one up to the owner's deck, and one down to the Guest cabins) and furnished as a lounge with a game & card table for 6/8 people.

The idea was to allow all guests to benefit from the same cozy atmosphere you can find in a loft or in a chalet. Level 1 is designed as a lobby, with a comfortable sofa, wardrobe and bathroom, and level 2, reachable through an internal stairway, for the sleeping area. On both levels (1+2) the cabins enjoy an amazing view thanks to large floor-toceiling windows. In the issue of July - and on the website - we will soon unveil more details about the Pam De Glam megayacht concept.

DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS

With a beam of 14 meters, the yacht opens with a superb beach area decorated with natural sand and equipped with a romantic fireplace in the middle. The beach area and the main deck are connected by the view of the 11m+ infinity pool and its emotional waterwall.

FUSION DESIGN

Although the external design and outdoor areas look very modern, the style choice for the owner's cabin is designed combining a classical scheme with contemporary elements. The owner's cabin is accessible directly from the lift, with an imposing

wood panel adorned with marble columns and Corinthian capitals, that separates the private foyer from the bedroom. The bed is positioned on an important platform with two/three steps; behind are the walk-in wardrobe and the bathroom with a spectacular view on the private terrace.

ulfstream Aerospace Corp. plans to showcase the latest in aircraft innovation and cabin design at the upcoming 2018 European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva later this spring. Among the aircraft planned for the company’s static display are the all-new Gulfstream G500 and the company flagship Gulfstream G650ER.

Upon entry into service in 2018, the Gulfstream G500 will bring to the business-jet market an aircraft designed to suit pilots as much as passengers. The aircraft’s revolutionary Symmetry Flight DeckTM features the industry’s first active control sidesticks and the most extensive use of touchscreens in a civilian flight deck. As a result, the G500 has remarkably safe and smooth handling qualities, ideal for an aircraft that combines incredible speed with significant range — 4,400 nautical miles/8,149 kilometers — when flying at Mach 0.90.

GENEVA | EBACE 2018 The G500, and G650ER and other Gulfstream aircraft will be available for viewing at EBACE 2018, between May 29-31, at Palexpo in Geneva. ebace.aero | gulfstream.com

The G500 cabin’s serene, timeless environment is second to none. Drawing on engineering accomplishments developed for the Gulfstream G650 and G650ER, the G500 features cabin elements that allow travelers to make the most of every moment on-board, whether they are working, dining or sleeping. Along with 100 percent fresh air infused every two minutes, the G500 features the lowest cabin altitude in its class, industry-leading low sound levels and 14, 26-inch-wide signature Gulfstream windows that offer panoramic views and an abundance of natural light. Each aircraft is outfitted and designed to meet each customer’s distinctive style – choosing from combinations of quarter-smoked kosipo and walnut burl veneers, stone flooring, diamond-patterned quilted seats and everything in between.

Designed as the ultimate blend of form and function, Gulfstream’s flagship, the G650ER, extends the nonstop reach of the industry’s highest performance long-range business aircraft to 7,500 nautical miles/13,890 kilometers at Mach 0.85. Flying even faster at Mach 0.90, the G650ER will carry eight passengers 6,400 nautical miles/11,853 kilometers. Both are feats that no other business aircraft in the world can achieve.

Inside, the G650ER can be configured into four separate, transitional living spaces. Flexible cabin design and the option to customize offer Gulfstream owners control of their environment – whether it’s the need for a private stateroom, a large conference space or individual work areas. Wide seats and generous aisle spaces are benefits of the G650ER, and that sense of spaciousness is further enhanced by 16 Gulfstream panoramic windows, the largest in the industry, that stream sunlight into the cabin and galley.
