Introduction
SUPMANEE CHAISANSUK’s Portfolio
Supmanee Chaisansuk Born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1980 Supmanee grew up in a working class neighborhood in the very center of this populous and beautiful Asian city. Two decades later she earned both her Bachelor of Science Degree (Architecture) and a Master of Architecture (Architectural Technology & Environmental Design) from the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, at Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand. After her student days, she practiced her profession for 8-years, as a sustainable architect and healthy building researcher at the Research and development department of Magnolia Quality Development (MQDC), a famous developer company in Thailand which focuses in applying sustainable quality care and the well being of residents. Here she learned about the importance and the necessity of integrated building, the construction of environmentally friendly human settlements while also utilizing innovative technology to apply architecture to the needs of the people. In addition to that, her evolving career included her position as an assistant project manager for 1.5 years at the Arsom Silp Institute of Arts, which is one of Thailand’s socially integrated educational companies. Here she was involved in fully integrated practices within the social aspects of community and architectural development. The importance of being consciously aware when thinking about human affairs was quickly learned and applied by her, in accordance with the principles of local Thai architecture and Thai art, both being based upon cultural and historic Thai wisdom. This background as a socially aware architect allowed her to launch a career that combines a collective sense of ethic with a personal display of aesthetic values in her artwork. As a Thai citizen and a woman Supmanee developed an ongoing love affair with nature and the people of her country in a very intimate way, which would be reflected in her paintings. Making our planet a shared home, a place that we deserve and deserves us would be a priority for her, as well as a spiritual challenge that she would turn into a guiding muse.
At present, she is focusing her efforts full time into being a practicing visual artist. This is now the most important investment of her life, a creative call to which she is fully committed. Her style has developed over the years, being innovation her most powerful allied. Since her younger years her love for nature has remained a paramount factor for her inspiration. For most of her life she lived in a local house, located under a green canopy of street lined trees in one of the central business areas of Bangkok. The lushness of the diversity of green life forms that surrounded that space cultivated and inspired her continuously, helping to create a strong aesthetic and spiritual bond with nature. A wide array of living creatures were there as part of her daily life, which became a quasi magic fusion of wildlife patterns such as trees, herbs, fungi and flowers. Her home and her inspiration became one. Immersed in this marvelous realm that her mind recreates she feels at peace. By translating this inner experience into an artwork she is choosing to share her amusement and her devotion with the world in a most noble way. It is perhaps not a coincidence that her paintings become alive through the magic of watercolor, as this might reflect the way the Bangkok canals irrigate the natural environment that mean so much for her.

2009-2013 Since 2009, surviving her encounter with bone cancer made Supmanee realize that life is short, and she should continue her life by engaging with what she loves. Watercolor painting is the most favorite thing in her life, therefore, she has passionately and energetically returned to sketching and painting. In 2012 Supmanee did her first solo exhibition “Small Eyes, Big Views” at Cassia Art Gallery. This watercolor collection showed her own view of her life. The works were observations of the subtle beauty of her environment. She was inspired by houses in her neighborhood, pets and trips throughout Asia that she expressed using her own style of watercolor. In 2013 at the second solo exhibition “Colors in Bloom” at the Cassia Art Gallery she developed her style and turned the paintings into illustrations. Her artworks were inspired by the enjoyment from searching and experiencing new techniques in watercolors which she loved most. By matching colors she showed the happiness that results from a wide array of activities like seeing and paying attention to our surroundings, traveling, living at home, watching our neighbors, watching animals, trees and grass, contemplating the sea and the beaches or even reading books; all in big and small perspectives. All these experiences would be screened through the imagination, tailored and combined to create an interesting concept and a unique style which brings lively and joyful smiles to the artist and the viewers.

2014 She keeps the illustration style which created the third “Dwelling In My Mind” exhibition at Dialogue Coffee and Gallery. Her collection showed compositions of urban environments in a unique atmosphere of an incredibly complex space which includes narrow walk ways and traditional houses densely populated. There, you can find rusty, galvanized iron building elements, areas that thrive with the colors of recycled materials as well as the shiny and gleaming skyscraper monoliths that the district is more famous for. Such environment is reflected and mixed with her experiences of culture, natural beauty and the every day life in her community.

2015 In 2015, she got interested in natural patterns which she introduced in her 4th solo exhibition “The Nest” at the Meeting room Art Cafe, in Chiangmai, Thailand. The collection was inspired by a full array of natural shapes such as leaves, branches and roots that can drill into the ground and become the habitat of ants and termites, or a perfect platform for bird nests. All this natural space produced a sense of wonder that is quickly reflected on the paintings. Through the superimposition of layers a warm and mysterious effect is produced on the canvas, and a sense of empathy between the artist and the spectator is wonderfully conveyed by the color combination and the composition.

2016 She still enjoys working with nature as an inspiration and ventures into the semi-abstract style with watercolor on paper. She also starts using acrylic on canvas, a new thing for her. Her 5th solo exhibition from 2016 “A little More” was also held at Cassia Art Gallery. Here she explored the subconscious and expressed the diverse sense of nature in a mysterious way, as if nature and the human mind were connected. These time the imagination of the viewer is put to the test through the demands of a subconsciously enriched artwork.

2017 After she worked in the architecture field as her main job for 10 years, she made decision to be a full time artist in 2017 and did the solo show under her own name “Supmanee’s Art in Nature” at Jamjuree Art Gallery, Bangkok. Here she continued using acrylic on canvas in her fluid semi-abstract style. Nature around herself was still a major inspiration and she started gathering information by meticulously observing all kinds of beautiful organic forms such as overlaying, encapsulation, growth movements of trees, grass, petals, pollen and flowers. The sense of complexity, happiness, freedom and mystery that usually transpires Supmanee’s work had turned into a new language.

2018 In 2018 she kept venturing into nature as inspiration and ran 3 solo shows in the same year, “Enchanting” at La Lanta Fine Art, a well-known art gallery in Bangkok and “Pollen” at Many Cuts Art Space in Chacheongsao, both reflecting her interest for tiny things living around her. At the end of this year she had the solo exhibition “Rhythm of Nature” at Black Cat gallery in Melbourne, Australia. Here she drew inspiration from the blowing of the wind as a metaphor to understand that life goes on and things come and go. Ultimately, the secret to freedom and happiness is just let go..

2019 In 2019 she was invited to show her work in two group exhibitions which explored those very same topics she had been working on for most of her career. The first one was “Lovely blossoms”, duo exhibition in Sathorn 11 Art Space, Bangkok, in which she showed feelings of overwhelming happiness in the form of colorful tropical flowers. After that she participated in the second group show “Rhythm of Nature and life” at Joyman Gallery, Bangkok. This time she was inspired by tiny plants around her home and some other creatures inside the darken niches among those spaces.

2020 In the beginning of the year 2020 she participates in “NIMBY: Not in my Backyard”, the women group show composed of 5 artists at Palette Art Space, which exposed the problematic relation between society and the environment. Issues like air pollution, industrial waste, burning crops and dust from big constructions projects were the source of inspiration behind the artistic concept. The social criticism was present like never before and the finger was pointed on the direction of some institutions that even when they tried to solve the problems by setting up some policies these were just “lock the stable door after the horse is stolen”; not at all a sustainable way. The accusations went on, pointing that when they said we must reduce dust from the source and we must plant more trees those were just words, never actions. The realization that people in the middle and lower class had to buy their own protection, and that those who cannot afford it would suffer dire consequences served as an incendiary motif which would sustained the whole idea of the exhibition. “Please, take care of yourself!” became the name of her concept. At the end of this year, she joined the show “NOAH: Nature, Object, Animal, Human” which takes nature itself as a central theme, inspired once again by the way life develops around her immediate surroundings. Here she zooms in fluffy hair texture which act like a network of sensations connected to the soul. The brighten colors of tiny life comes “ NIMBY : Not in My Backyard“ the Group exhibition at Palette Art up from the dark like there is always hope in life. Space,Bangkok, Thailand

2021 She started the year 2021 with “The Delicacy of Nature” in February, the solo show at Rivercity Bangkok, Thailand, that was inspired by the locked down during the Covid 19 pandemic. During this year she felt disconnected from her circle as same as millions of people around the world. However, spending more time at home allowed her to be an observer of her own garden. While noticing the surfaces of plants, flowers, insects, and animals, Supmanee was drawn into the delicacy, softness, and fluffiness of fur, hair, feather, and wool that were connected in nature, woven in a tapestry of living forms which created a united network. The marvelous creations of nature not only amazed her but also comforted her heart to made her feel warm and at peace with herself and the world. She no longer felt lonely, ever again, anymore.

Supmanee Chaisansuk Supmanee Chaisansuk was born in Bangkok, Thailand. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (Architecture) and a Master of Architecture (majoring in Architectural Technology & Environmental Design) from the Faculty of Architecture and Planning from Thammasat University in Thailand. She worked as a sustainable architect for DTGO company for 8 years, and as an assistant project manager in Arsom Silp Institute of the Arts in Thailand for one and a half years. Currently she works full time as an artist with it being the most important thing in her life, which she loves and devotes to passionately. She has been exploring innovative art styles inspired by observations in nature with great sense of commitment, both personally and socially. Statement My artwork is inspired by nature because of my immediate and personal experiences. My home is a local house located in the central business district of Bangkok. It is surrounded by a naturally green area and ecology that cultivates my desire to appreciate the beauty of nature. I’m always eager to zoom in on patterns of wildlife such as trees, herbs, fungus, stones, flowers, and all kind of small creatures. I feel at peace and impressed when I look at the gorgeous life, so they became my source of inspiration. Water media technique has been my method of choice for creating my art since I was young, perhaps because of the sense of flowing that watercolor gives, mirroring the way water moves in nature, free, mixing everything in its way, like the colors mix on the palette. This approach generates a conceptual, semi-abstract style that works as an experiment to link color patterns in nature with the mind. My impressions from the natural environment that surrounds me blend with my subconscious and trigger my imagination, which I put to the service of art to communicate my feelings with honesty and integral passion
