Rokbak Will Impress The Crowds At Conexpo

Rokbak is bringing a pair of its haulers and a strong team to CONEXPO in Las Vegas to show exactly how the brand has become a major mover in both the US and global market.

Rokbak haulers will be on display for the first time ever at a North American tradeshow when the RA30 and RA40 arrive at CONEXPO 2023.

The Scottish articulated hauler manufacturer is bringing both models to the largest construction show in North

America, providing attendees with the chance to get up close and personal with the earth-moving machines and demonstrate exactly how they can offer grounded ‘Rok-solid’ performance Stateside.

“We cannot wait to get back to CONEXPO and give the RA30 and RA40 pride of place on our stand,” says Paul Douglas, Managing Director of Rokbak. “We’re looking forward to getting as many attendees interacting with what we’ve got lined up as possible, as well as introducing people to our knowledgeable team who are keen to show off our robust and hardworking haulers. Rokbak will be there to show customers first-hand the quality of our machines and why we’ve become known as one of the most reliable and trusted articulated hauler manufacturers in the market.”

Rokbak will be located at Booth F8926 in the Festival Grounds, together with fellow Volvo Group companies Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo Penta.

CONEXPO will be the perfect opportunity to highlight the machines’ abilities to benefit construction projects, talk to customers about how the haulers deliver new benchmarks in both performance and total cost of ownership, and reinforce the company’s commitment to sustainability and journey to net-zero as part of the Volvo Group.

With sustainability in mind, the Rokbak event booth materials are all re-

$824,500 cycled or reusable. Two 40ft customised shipping containers, adorned in the recognisable Rokbak aesthetic, will be used for meeting rooms and product information displays. Following the event, these will be shipped back to Motherwell for reuse at future events.

Product experts will be ready and waiting to discuss the technical capabilities and key aspects of the haulers, welcoming everyone to the booth where there will be merchandise giveaways and competition prizes up for grabs throughout the event

– as well as plenty of refreshments.

“Rokbak is seeing huge demand for its RA30 and RA40 articulated haulers in the US,” says Robert Franklin, Rokbak’s Director of Sales – Americas. “The US is leading articulated hauler demand globally with huge infrastructure spend. There is a lot of construction activity at the moment around house and road building, so we are keen to meet with customers and potential customers at CONEXPO and discuss how the RA30 and RA40 can help with these projects.”

It was to the USA that Motherwell-based Rokbak’s first sand-coloured machines were delivered following the rebrand in September 2021, with a pair of RA30s sold to earthmoving, utility and clearing company Linco Construction of Houston, Texas, via Easton Sales and Rentals, to assist with earthworks, underground utility and clearing work. Most US dealers went on to confirm orders within the first few months. SP

Winter Revenue-Generating Ideas For Land Clearing Contractors

Despite freezing temperatures and limited daylight, winter is the perfect time to expand your service offerings and ensure a steady income.

Instead of stowing away equipment until the spring, consider ways to grow profits with these three revenue-generating ideas:

Land Clearing

Winter can be one of the better times for land clearing because frozen temperatures make the ground solid and provide better support for heavy equipment. Additionally, precipitation and runoff occur less frequently, and many plant species are dormant, reducing envi- ronmental damage caused by erosion and aggressively cutting back invasive vegetation. Cold weather also helps keep engine and hydraulic temperatures cool during the all-day jobs that are common in land clearing.

“The sooner you begin this process, the more time you will have to fully prepare a property for spring projects,” said Matt Nelson, director of development at Diamond Mowers. “This way, you can commit more time surveying the land and devising a plan for landscaping, planting, and building.”

Utilize a brush cutter to slice through grass, brush, branches, and trees effectively. This “one-size-fitsall” utility tool offers unmatched flexibility, power, and performance for keeping land neat and manicured, warding off tall brush and invasive plant species, trimming branches, and removing brush. A disc mulcher’s speed and productivity are particularly well-suited for clearing large expanses of land due to its distinctive disc design that stores energy and combines it with hydraulic power to enable operators to slice and process trees and brush in their path. Diamond’s new Excavator Drum Mulcher tackles brush clearing with power and precision for midi-excavator users. It is equipped with an adjustable displacement hydraulic motor that provides impressive torque to power through material up to 8” in diameter.

Tree Removal

There are many advantages to removing trees during the winter. Most trees shed their leaves, so the lack of foliage makes it easier to spot signs of mold, decay, and other diseases. Fewer leaves also mean minimal cleanup, and because most diseasecarrying insects and fungi are dormant, there is less risk of spreading maladies around a property.

It is also easier to remove dead or decaying trees from a property during winter since frozen ground does not get torn up by equipment, and hardened sap in trees provides perfect conditions for cutting and mulching. A depth control drum mulcher excels at taking down larger material and creates a fine mulch, while a disc mulcher is ideal for pulling whole trees into its deck for quick clearing and high productivity. For those requiring pow- er and flexibility for harsh mulching needs, Diamond’s new Drum Mulcher OD Pro X boasts an optimized infeed system that produces a smaller end product than

Roadside Maintenance

conventional open drum models and allows ground contact for maximum productivity.

Once trees have been cut down and mulched, use a stump grinder to remove the remaining stump and roots. Diamond offers two types of wheel-based stump grinders, both available as skid-steer attachments. Which one a contractor uses depends on the size of the tree stumps and the different functions they prefer. Both options feature high-torque radial piston motors, 1” thick grinding wheels, and carbide teeth for dual-direction cutting. The Reflex unit is simple and easy to operate, with premium components for optimal performance.

At the same time, the Miller attachment offers the same power and productivity as a commercial grinder at a fraction of the cost and with a diverse range of functions for greater versatility.

Roadside maintenance is a year-round activity vital for keeping roadways in safe driving condition by removing debris and brush that can block visibility and preventing damage due to poor erosion. Roadside maintenance is critical in rural areas where terrain can be uneven and infrastructure is not as closely monitored as in urban areas. Roadside vegetation also acts as a snow fence, causing snow to accumulate on the road, which causes safety problems and increases snow removal expenses.

According to TRIP, a national transportation research nonprofit, 13% of U.S. rural roads are rated in poor condition while another 21% are in mediocre condition. The need for roadside maintenance is real, and opportunities are abound. Contractors with rotary mowers, boom ditchers, or attachments for gravel reclamation can optimize the “off-season” by offering their services to local municipalities and landowners to help clear culverts, promote proper drainage, reduce erosion, and keep roadways manicured and maintained.

“Winter is a great time to be proactive in preparing for spring projects and anticipating future needs,” Nelson emphasized. Used Compressors Can Be A Breath Of Fresh Air

With new equipment supply tight, providing a steady source of quality reconditioned used compressors is a sound – and sustainable – alternative, says Dominic

Not all compressors are equal

of Atlas Copco Portable Air Division.

Giving compressors a full extended second life is more than just good business for Atlas Copco. The company is committed to the circular economy and today nearly every compressor has the ability to be renewed and sent back out into the world for a whole new adventure in the field. And second life needn’t mean second class: users can expect that their OEM revitalized, and modernized compressors perform just like new. That’s not the end of the good news - they are also typically less expensive to buy than new and can play an important role in offsetting climate change.

No Compromise Renewal Process

More than 300 compressors flow through the company’s refurbishment centre in Poland. Here, a team of engineers take the most promising used units, inspect them, evaluate the economies of renewal, strip them, and bring them back to market leading reconditioned status. 300 compressors a year is just the tip of an often-overlooked

Fancini,

iceberg, believes Dominic Fancini, who is in charge of global used equipment at Atlas Copco’s compressor business.

But not all used compressors qualify for renewal. Some have had a hard life and the work involved in bringing them back up to a standard a premium brand like Atlas Copco could endorse reselling means that only the cream of the crop is selected. To find these Atlas Copco scours the world looking for the best examples to recondition.

“We live and die by the provenance of our used equipment,” he says. Buying used can be a risk for everyone, and the chance of making a mistake can be high, so we need to be extremely careful we can guarantee that what we are selling is what we claim.” And only Atlas Copco, as the market leader, can give guarantees to quality assurance in its used equipment.

“Today, the new compressor market is booming,” says Dominic. “But these same machines will – in three-orfive-years’ time – find themselves coming onto the second-hand market. We need to get ready for that influx and have the resources in place to give the best of them an extended and second life.

“There’s very little compromise when you buy used from the people who made the equipment in the first place,” he says. “You get a machine that’s fully reconditioned, and with warranty.”

To do that Dominic and his team buys from trusted sources, such as customers of Atlas Copco new compressors around the world, especially those in the rental sector, but also on the open market from known traders. High pressure and specialty air compressors are the most sought after on the used market. (Given the lowticket price, small compressors are harder to deliver the needed returns for OEMs, given the cost of upgrading them.)

Upgrades More Than Skin

Deep

Upgrading the used compressors to Atlas Copco qual- ity is not a quick, simple or cheap process. “It’s a lot more than just a lick of paint,” says Dominic. First the incoming compressors go through a verification stage, where an assessment of what’s needed – technically and cosmetically – is drawn up, and the cost of doing so is calculated. (Ensuring that the likely selling price is sufficient to make the whole exercise commercially viable.)

Once this is signed off the compressor is stripped, needed parts replaced (e.g., batteries) and items such as starters, alternators etc. reconditioned. The screw element of the compressor unit is also closely inspected for wear.

Sustainability is not an afterthought but has been designed into the compressors from when they were first designed. 100% of the oils used are recyclable, 95% of all body panels are too – and 80% of all major components can be refurbished.

Only Good Things

There are only positives when it comes to giving used compressors a second life. It’s good business, opens the Atlas Copco brand to a new customer base that might not otherwise buy new machines, and – just as importantly – it’s good for the climate.

“They come back from the finished process looking like they’re new,” laughs Dominic, “Even the decals are perfect.” Then the process of advertising them begins –but these five-star premium used units tend to fly off the shelves, particularly in Europe, where currently half of Atlas Copco’s total yearly stock of reconditioned compressors find new homes. JLG’s All-New E18 Vertical

Mast Lifts Now Available

JLG Industries introduces an all-new vertical mast lift series to the market.

The new JLG E18MCL model is well-suited for construction and industrial applications that require outdoor and indoor capable machines while the E18MML model is ideal for finish work and general maintenance work, as well as for cleaner indoor-only applications. Both E18 models are available with a Stock Picker Package Option for warehouse and distribution center applications.

“The new E18 vertical lift series from JLG has been engineered to provide the most important features and benefits: Maximized durability, ease of serviceability and enhanced productivity — while keeping operator safety, confidence and comfort in mind,” says Misty Mason, JLG’s product manager. “These new models offer an efficient and productive way to tackle up-and-over work and an alternative to using ladders and scaffolding.”

According to Mason, the “E” in these models’ nomenclature stands for “Electric,” giving a nod to the machines’ modern DC electric drive system. Equipped with longrunning batteries, JLG’s E18 models offer two times more duty cycles than the market-leading competitive machines. And thanks to the batteries being mounted under the platform, the E18s also are designed with improved machine weight distribution for efficient loading and unloading.

Application specific

“One benefit of these new JLG vertical mast lifts is that these machines allow users to access confined spaces,” says Mason. The E18MCL is rated for indoor and outdoor use, opening up unlimited application opportunities. Equipped with solid, non-marketing tires, its scissor-style steering is similar to JLG scissor lifts for quick familiarization and reliable control through tight areas like doorways.

The E18MML is rated for indoor use only, making it an ideal machine for sensitive flooring and finish work applications, including maintenance. Equipped with caster wheels, this model’s Point & Go® steering is the same as the more traditional vertical lift steering style on JLG’s predecessor models.

The Stock Picker Package option, available on both E18 models, includes a fold-down work tray platform with side entry saloon doors, gate alarm and dual amber beacons.

Notable features

These new models come standard with JLG’s fieldproven load-sensing system. This pressure-based system monitors the load of persons, materials and tools in the platform to ensure the ma- chines’ capacity ratings are not exceeded.

Optimized for durability, the E18s are engineered with an improved roller system on the extension deck and re-engineered mast guards to reduce the potential for debris to accumulate and hinder the operation.

These models are designed with the operator in mind, featuring modern, ergonomic controls and an enhanced entry/exit from the platform. And, their quick change platform system allows operators to efficiently switch platforms in one minute to suit unique job requirements. There are five different platform options, including extension decks and trays, to choose from to increase productivity.

The new JLG E18 vertical mast lifts share commonality with JLG scissor lifts, including toolless entry into key areas, to enhance serviceability. “This reduces familiarization time and increases efficiency with parts, service and maintenance needs,” Mason says. And, she notes, that these models are compatible with the JLG Handheld Analyzer for onsite troubleshooting and are equipped with the onboard Multi-Display Indicator that provides real-time information on the machine.

Mason adds that these models are also available with market-leading options such as ClearSky™ telematics for fleet maintenance and management, CleanGuard™ for leak containment and a USB charger and phone cradle to give operators extra conveniences in the platform.

Spec check

“The new JLG E18 vertical lifts are spec’d for productivity,” says Mason. The E18MCL’s platform height is 18-ft indoors and 13-ft outdoors, while the E18MML and the E18 with Stock Picker Package Option models have 18-ft indoors. The E18 models also boast a platform capacity of 450 lbs when equipped with the standard platform. “This is 22 percent more capacity than comparable competitive vertical models in the market,” she says.

Mason adds, “Keeping machine weight low was also very important in designing these machines.” The E18s weigh 1900 lbs when equipped with the standard platform — a lower gross vehicle weight than comparable competitive vertical models, which are over 2,000 lbs. And, these models are engineered with a zero turning radius and 30-percent gradeability to provide maximum maneuverability in a lightweight machine. “This means that these machines can go on most freight elevators, work on sensitive flooring and fit through doorways,” she finishes.

JLG’s new E18 vertical mast lifts are now available to order. SP
