TRADERS UNDER PRESSURE BUT OPPORTUNITIES ARE PLENTY
EDITORIAL
Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

Trading companies, who keep investing majority of their profits back in wholesale business, keep thriving. But if they move to property accumulation or multiple partnerships, multi business model, they reach nowhere and finally become a sidelined trader.
The price of good quality commercial plywood (unbranded) is reaching to BWR plywood levels as seen couple of years ago. On an average, 15% increase has already happened from 2020 level. I expect, general commercial ply to reach Rs 60 sq ft by end of this FY. Shuttering plywood and doors are on the same line. What’s going on in the price front in every material is pressing the panic button. People are adding to working capital employed in distribution while pressure is mounting on margins of traders which is continuously falling due to supply issues. Next two years are tough for traders hence caution is very much needed. Expansions/adding stock points are not wise ideas until you have the capacity to invest. If you are not an over leveraged and over trading company, the time is very good for opening new areas, adding up warehouses and to bring up new branded companies/mindset in your folio. This is the time when many young brands are taking wise steps to grow and follow the organised way that offers fine opportunity for wise distributors who remain updated. Actually the anatomy of a successful distributor revolves around knowledge, financial backup and the strength of his community of dealers. But majority of them focus only on tight purchasing. When worldwide inflation is going above the roof, suppliers do not give much heed to such buyers and hence margins fall for traders. To make up the margins, many move towards retailing or showrooms. This trend can be easily understood from the example of few distribution companies, who were once a market force but later became retailers. Distributors entering in retail have various benefits in mind, but not all are able to steer the counters to their desired goals. Retailing by distributors is an easy way to create profit centers. Many of them are may seem like enjoying good fame and money, however, after a few years of operation, proper assessment can be done. Until there is focus with an able person in the driving seat, it is just a show. Case studies by us reveal that trading companies, who keep investing majority of their profits back in wholesale business, keep thriving. But if they move to property accumulation or multiple partnerships, multi business model, they reach nowhere and finally become a sidelined trader. The present times are pressing for traders. At the same time, this is also the time for opportunities for the deserving, daring and capable ones. Add the speed and grab the share. Wish you all a very prosperous New Financial Year! Thanking you.

FIRE SAFETY: PRECAUTION IS THE ONLY SOLUTION
APNI BAAT

Manufacturing units should take all preventive majors to avoid any fire incidents, for this the units should invest extra money when they plan layout, they should also install fire extinguishers equipment and create a separate trained team, who will always be ready to fight during every odd situation.
Wood, Decorative Panel, PVC based industries are highly prone to fire, because these industries are handling with raw materials such as timber, phonel, Melamine, Formaldehyde, PVC resin, Paper etc which are inflammable and extend to high risk. These industries had seen many fire incidences that caused high losses and even at times they could not revive. The summer season is always challenging for the wood panel sector, because most of the fire incidents are reported during this period. In 2021, we saw some major fire cases in the panel manufacturing sector. Nagpur based Spacewood furniture manufacturing unit, Gandhidham based Arunachal Timber’s Particle Boards unit were completely destroyed due to fire. Besides there were fire incidents reported in many wood based panel units in Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, Gujarat also. Recently Alstone WPC plant based in Rajasthan was gutted into fire which is said to be anticipated for losses in crores. As per report, there had been approx. a dozen small and big fire cases reported every year in panel based manufacturing industries, which loose in billions directly or indirectly. The fire incidents had disturbed the entire ecosystem of the company for a long-term. Hence, wood and decorative panel industries should be more attentive to prevent the fire cases in their manufacturing establishments. Manufacturing units should take all preventive majors to avoid any fire incidents, for this the units should invest extra money when they plan layout, they should also install fire extinguishers equipment and create a separate trained team, who will always be ready to fight during every odd situation. Always keep in mind that panel based manufacturing units use highly inflammable raw materials, and this should be on top priorities for the safety. Industries should also insure their assets for the future, and take these steps as mandatory investments.
This April 2022 issue has news and facts of the present situation of the wood panel sector due to inflation, short supply of materials and its impact on related industries. Particle Boards and MDF industries continue expanding in North and South India, there are brief reports covered. The introduction of Low Emission Premium Plus Boards from Century Prowud is another good step from brand Century Ply to offer a health friendly product for users, which has been covered in this issue, which details interview with Mr. Avatar Singh Bhullar of Century Prowud. The get-together of Century Royal Club Members at Goa rejuvenated them, which has featured in this issue, along with many new launches, summits and events published. Wishing all the prosperous Financial Year 2023

SHARP JUMP IN COMPLAINTS IN LAMINATES, MARKET CRY FOR QUALITY
T
NEWS WATCH
he rising temperature in the summer season is getting tough for laminate sector. Inferior quality is the reason being told by markets. The laminate producers and traders are reportedly puzzled with increasing complaints of crack in sheets from various sites. Retailers are sending photographs to distributors and company representatives in their respective areas related to complaints of sheet cracks.
38
Especially in the Northern, Western and Eastern region the issues are being observed frequently. In these regions the temperature is already over 40 degrees and some parts are experiencing even more up to 45 degree. With rising temperature several complaints of cracks on laminate sheets photographs have been received by The Ply Reporter as well. The dealers and retailers have shared pictures and information that the issue needs to be addressed by the manufacturers immediately. They said that due to high temperature sheets are getting cracked. The reason behind it they think that is happening due to low quality resin being used in the product making. The regular complaint from the customers’ side has made them uneasy doing business, despite that the manufacturers and suppliers are not taking it into account and are uninterested in resolving the issues despite several warnings. From Lucknow, Gurugram, Delhi, Punjab, Bhubaneswar, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana, etc the dealers have sent pictures to the Ply Reporter office and appeal to highlight these quality issues through reports and webinar for further course of action and improvement of product qualities.
www.plyreporter.com
The Ply Reporter talked to laminate manufacturing technicians, who say that in the summer season with rising temperature such issues in low quality laminates are common. It happens because urea is used more than the required amount while making resin. The reports received from the market and sites confirm that more such issues are being seen in laminates sheets of thickness of 0.8mm, 0.72mm, liner etc. The dealers’ pain point is that they are not able to recover payment from the customers due to complaints. So, they are asking manufacturers to come forward and look into the matter. The complaints of bubbles developing on furniture after applications are coming out in the PVC laminate category also. Many of the dealers in this segment also have sent pictures to the Ply Reporter and asked to do something positive to resolve the issue.

PLYWOOD, LAMINATES & PARTICLE BOARDS PRICES GO UP ACROSS THE COUNTRY
NEWS WATCH
The price rise scenario is significant in the Plywood, Particle Boards and Laminates industries in MarchApril 2022. The situation arising before the manufacturers has compelled them to increase the price on a regular basis. Till date it has increased many times and is also expected that no relief is visible in near future. There are numerous factors for that such as timber scarcity, fuel and chemical price, labour scarcity and much more. The related associations across the country are regularly monitoring the industry scenario and issuing letters to their members guiding them to get involved in Price Increase, fair practices and tightening the norms for timely payment for the industries sustainability.

PLYWOOD AND FILM FACED SHUTTERING PLYWOOD On the 2nd April, 2022 HPMA (Haryana Plywood Manufacturers' Association) revised the price and issued a notice after the meeting on account of exorbitant wood and fuel cost increment. This meeting was more important as it was among the prominent manufacturers apart from executive members. Their observation was that the situation is compelling to further increase the price of products. They discussed the matter and unanimously decided to increase the price of plywood, block board and flush doors by 10% from immediate effect. Besides, the corrections in the trade and dealings have been observed like Rs. 10 per quintal will be charged extra in bill on loading. Remittance i.e. bank charges will be on the buyer account and all sales have to be on cash & carry basis. Earlier, Haryana based Film Faced shuttering plywood manufacturers had increased the price once again and the decision was taken in a meeting of film faced shuttering plywood manufacturers held at Yamuna Nagar on 16th March 2022 under the chairmanship of President of AIPMA Mr Devender Chawala. “Due to rising price of timber, chemicals and other raw materials along with labor and fuel cost the input cost has increased due to which the price rise of product is necessary,” said Mr Devender Chawala, President, AIPMA. AIPMA. During the meeting the industry stakeholders discussed the current supply issues of raw material like timber, face veneer, www.plyreporter.com
phenol and formaldehyde and decided to increase the price which was implemented with immediate effect. According to their decision the minimum sales prices of shuttering plywood was as follows: 30kg @ Rs 23.50 and 34kg @ Rs 25.50 with Ex factory and GST charged extra. All the members unanimously agreed upon to increase the sale price in phase manner. They also instructed the trade fraternity to get the payment strictly within maximum 30 days. Punjab Plywood Manufacturers’ Association (PPMA) on April 01, 2022 called up an executive body meeting to discuss the situation of the surge in all kinds of raw materials viz. Wood, Core, Chemicals etc as the situation is unbearable for the manufacturers and only with cooperation of all stakeholders can the manufacturers tide out of the situation. In view of this, the following has
