IS MDF THE KEY BEHIND RISE IN ORGANISED WORK CULTURE?
EDITORIAL
Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor
The issue with MSME is often about Capital and Clarity. Unfortunately, they seldom talk about Clarity.
Formal work culture is gaining momentum in Indian wood panel segment. Organised players are now able to do what was not possible 5 years ago. I would not hesitate in saying that steady rise of MDF has given a taste for formal working among trade people and stockists. In the past two years, the availability of capital at low interest, coupled with assured margin of 2-3% plus earnings on MDF stock offered a taste for ‘set earnings’. Supply shortage in MDF established the comfort among dealers and hence ‘a certain income with ease’ is being experienced by traders now. This has not only made big distributors comfortable but also adding to the taste of aligning with good Brands. This factor is normally seen in FMCG sector and that is why all the brands are now seeing a turnaround. It is an important point to note for the industry and stockist. In recent industry performances, India's pioneer brand, Century Ply has performed very well on all fronts as reflected in the 3rd quarter results. It is important to note specially when majority of firms operating in wood panel segment were pained by weak demands, raw material issues and uncertainty.
26
Century Plywood’s growth is an example that point to the need of right planning, marketing, combined with strategic steps. The company has noted sharp rise in realisation in almost every product category. Sales especially in plywood have shown sharp growth which is important to mention if I compare with others in the peer group. The issue with MSME is often about Capital and Clarity. Unfortunately, they seldom talk about Clarity. The fight has become tough yet there are possibilities for brave hearts and clear minds. The future lies in Big volumes, Pre-finished products, Strong channel network and Brand goodwill. Every one can’t have each of these yet with joint ventures and forming alliances, new possibilities can be explored. The Ply Reporter will continue to extend support with news that the industry can use in order to move in the right direction. Keep supporting, Keep reading www.plyreporter.com!

RAW MATERIALS PRICES KEEPING LAMINATES TRADE VOLATILE
APNI BAAT
Rajiv Parashar, Editor
30
Despite of challenges, now big brands are expanding to become stronger in laminates market. In laminate, more capacity addition and new plants in North would create tough time for many laminates producers. A dozen of laminates units may shut operations or go to other hands in 2022.
Raw materials prices have been a disturbing factor for decorative laminate industry. The input cost of laminate is highly volatile due to unstable prices of Melamine, Phenol, Methanol, Kraft Paper, Base Paper etc throughout the year. In February 2021, Melamine shot up beyond 200 that kept laminate industries trembling. In October 2021, Melamine roared again, and crossed 300 mark resulting many laminates producers stopping manufacturing of economical grade liners. Melamine back to 150 created further disturbance when viability was beyond calculation and economy. Parallel with that were other raw materials causing worrisome situation. Now, the raw materials prices for laminates are roaring again during last week of January 2022. Melamine touched 175, Phenol 125 plus, Kraft Paper reaching towards 40, Base Paper prices strengthening due to Anti-Dumping Duty on import etc. If you compare with the raw material prices of November-December month, when the laminate makers were forced to reduce laminate prices. Now as predicted by some industry pioneers, there is rise in input cost of laminates and its impact may appear on laminates prices in February and March month. Laminate producers are again on alert mode, especially for economical grade producers or Liner laminate producers. Since branded laminate producers have reported growth in 3rd quarter compare and have maintained their 1 mm sales despite of weak November month sale. Brands focus on value added products e.g Exterior, Anti Scratch, Matt Finish, Anti Finger, HD Gloss etc have helped their position in high quality Laminates users and OEMs. Despite of challenges, now big brands are expanding to become stronger in laminates market. In laminate, more capacity addition and new plants in North would create tough time for many laminates producers. A dozen of laminates units may shut operations or go to other hands in 2022. And, this you call the side effect of vulnerable raw materials prices. This issue has covered the opening of CenturyPly’s Central Distribution System (CDS), which is first and unique model of modern Warehouse Management System in Indian Laminate Industries to serve its customer quick and bring stock visibility across the entire supply chain network. The launching of new products from the house of Greenlam, Stylam, Amulya Mica etc are published. The brief news on Timber Scenario, Face veneers, Particle Boards, Acrylic Laminates, Plywood, ACP and Price Increase of Plywood in different states have also been reported. The highlights of virtual launches, webinars and other happening are interesting read in this issue. Keep reading, and send your feedback.

RELIEF TO WOOD PANEL INDUSTRY AT DELHI NCR, USE OF WOOD CHIPS IN BOILER ALLOWED Factories can run for all seven days
T NEWS WATCH
he wood panel and laminate industries based at Delhi NCR region have a great respite with the order issued under section 12 of Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas. The new direction issued on 4 February, 2022 has allowed production for all seven days that was restricted up to 5 days due to pollution. The restriction imposed a few months before on use of polluting fuel like coal and wood chips in their boilers has been relaxed once again.
42
According to the new direction those wood based industries based at Delhi NCR region which were not operational on fossil fuels will now also be operational for all seven days. The industries based at Delhi NCR were demanding for the use of wood chips in their boilers for long. In this now notification the industries have been allowed to use them with some minor modification in the boiler which has to be carried out by the industry itself. The industry as well as DPMA have welcomed the move. Talking on the issue Mr Vikas Khanna, President, Delhi NCR Plywood Manufacturers Association said that the industry was demanding it for long and had given several presentations in this regard to convince the authority. Now with the permission the industry has a great relief for the use of different energy source.” He welcomed the decision taken by the government and said, “The industry will adopt the suggested change in the boiler to control the hazardous gases coming out from it. The industry is in consultation with the boiler making companies to optimize the use and minimize the pollution coming out from wood based industry,” added Mr Vikas Khanna. Soon the association will give a presentation before the Government after the change adopted by them. Mr Narendra Khemka, MD, Saffron Decoratives Pvt Ltd said, “Since last three months we were unable to utilize the total capacity due to the restriction and we were hesitant for further use of it also. But, the new direction for the use of fossil fuels, rice husk, wood chips, etc the industry has a great respite in terms of energy use. Now we can optimize the use of our capacity.” With the restriction due to rising pollution and the shifting the operation over PNG the operations had been reduced to five days a few months before. FACE VENEERS: OPTIONS IN 2022
GURJAN, OKOUME, RECON AND OTHERS! THE VIEW OF INDUSTRIES, EXPERTS AND TRADE
PLY REPORTER’S E-CONCLAVE
The Ply Reporter organized an e-conclave on 'Face Veneers: Options in 2022!' in association with PREMIUM Calibrated Plywood from Malchand & Sons Group. The conclave was live broadcast on Ply Reporter facebook page on 16 January 2022 in which the panelists were included: Dr. C N Pandey, Tech. Advisor, FIPPI & Century PlyBoards (India) Ltd; Dr. S K Nath, Ex Joint Director, IPIRTI; Mr. Ashok Agarwal, President, PMWA-UP & IIA; Mr. J K Bihani, President, HPMA; Mr. Alok Agarwal, Director, Woodland Gabon Sarl; Mr. Gopal Bansal, Director, Savitri Woods India Pvt. Ltd; Dr. Prashant, 122 Director, AK Plywoods & VP, SIPMA;
Mr. Himanshu Modi, Director, The Veneer World; Mr. Pragath Dvivedi, Founder, Ply Reporter and Mr. Rajiv Parashar, Editor, Ply Reporter. Here are important Q&A on Demand and Varieties of Commercial Face Veneers.
The face veneer thickness has reached 0.2mm from 1.25mm. The industry says it is a need. What is the scenario at present?
does not fulfill. In that case all BIS licenses should be failed, but there are a number of licenses in the industry. We have to evaluate how to make quality products.
Dr. S K Nath, Ex Joint Director, IPIRTI: The availability and the cost is the major reason. The face veneer has just become an ornamental skin. As per the norms of plywood the alternate layer should not be less than half because the mechanical strength of the whole plywood has to be maintained. The bending strength depends much on the face veneer or the outer layer.
Dr. C N Pandey, Tech. Advisor, FIPPI & Century PlyBoards (India) Ltd: We are having discussion about the industry that is growing very fast. There is a report in which it has been said that the requirement of plywood in the year 2021 was 15.4 million cbm and is going to be 57.5 million cbm by 2030. When plywood demand is going to be four times how will we meet the requirement of face veneer?
There was a discussion that if the industry uses 1mm face veneer that is not viable to the market. I believe that the strength property is deteriorating but there is no alternative because today as well the face veneer is coming from other countries. I suggested to BIS with the help of Greenply that where we are standing today and there is a need for a standard with low density plywood. Let us evaluate that. A special community was formed in my chairmanship. The BIS nullified our suggestion on the ground that it is not from a specialized institute. What we are making, how does that get the BIS license? We don’t know because the first option to alternate layers www.plyreporter.com
If we see the option only a Melia Dubia is the species in India that looks promising in this regard that is also in the southern region. The research is going on to get the quality variety that can meet the future requirement. The import of face veneer from the African countries should be encouraged to meet the requirement at present. The face veneer has become a decorative layer just to improve the looks of the plywood. People have forgotten what effect of it lies on the strength of plywood. There is a need to change the standard but there are some products that we cannot change the standard. Wherever plywood

MR. SAMEER GARG,
MANAGING DIRECTOR, SRG GROUP What are the reasons plywood prices are not rising unlike other panel products despite rising cost of raw material? The answer lies in the myriad facets of technology. It is with the help of technology that Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF), Laminates and Particle Boards have entered the picture. Despite being small and comparatively newer, these industries have become a force to reckon with. Even though the plywood sector has been around for quite a while, it is majorly an unorganized sector. This is because it consists of small and dispersed businesses. Due to the plywood industry’s low unanimity and strength in number, it has become difficult for the industry to hold its position in the market. Factors such as these withhold the www.plyreporter.com

Since its introduction over a century ago, the plywood industry has seen a rollercoaster ride in terms of prices. Unlike other wood products, this industry has witnessed historic highs and unpredictable lows as it integrated itself into the world economy. Yet despite being such an integral industry in our daily lives, why is it that the plywood rates are not increasing in tandem with the rates set by competitors? A brief talk with Mr. Sameer Garg, MD, SRG Plywood on present Plywood market scenario. plywood industry to make decisions independently. Instead, they initiate decisions based on the verdict of their competing industries. Are the other panel products like MDF, Particle Board also impact the Plywood business? With the introduction of the 3 aforementioned sectors into the market, the plywood industry has had to share its segment. This share is decreasing day by day and although the end production has remained the same, the pressure to sell plywood products for small players is on the rise. The plywood industry can unanimously decide to increase the prices of the existing selling shares. However, this would prove unfavourable since it would push customers to choose other alternatives.
