editorial Attention Designers!!!
Giant Brands are acquiring Design firms Hot Studio - an experience design company, and Carbon Design, a product design and development consultancy were acquired by Facebook in 2014. Google purchased Mike & Maaike, a progressive industrial design studio led by husband & wife Mike Simonian and Maaike Evers, also into furniture design. Big corporate, IT firms and big Media agencies are also looking to buy smaller specialised design firms to add meaningful business wings. Frog design founded by industrial designer Hartmut Esslinger was bought by Flextronics while Karmarama was acquired by Accenture. In India, there has not been much news about acquisitions through it is a common business practise in media industry. One of the major acquisitions was when Reliance had taken over Network18. Wipro acquired Designit, a Denmark-based global strategic design firm. Rajan Kohli, Sr. VP, Wipro Digital, commented on acquisition that it will complement the capabilities of an established design leader with their engineering heritage and bring compelling value to their clients. Complementing capabilities, scaling up faster and adding design intelligence in businesses have been most significant reasons behind acquisition. According to Sean O’Connor, partner at Smart Design, Corporate companies that want to become design-led have two choices: build or buy. On building, brands such as Johnson & Johnson have created their internal design resource and have people holding roles such as chief design officer. The alternative is to buy in the expertise, which is the strategy that Accenture, Deloitte and IBM are pursuing. Acquisitions are not limited to giants. Last year, Uniply Industries had acquired Vector Projects, whose plan is to expand into residential interiors in a big way. Numerous acquisitions of all sizes happen among architecture firms globally; most recent we heard was architecture firm Intec Group in US acquiring John Cooney Associates (JCA) Architects. Intec was quoted saying, this will help their efforts to capitalize on the burgeoning market of mixed-use and multifamily communities. While mergers & acquisitions are common between tech firms, it is time for design firms to learn from others' stories. There are more derivations from our studies & researches globally. The latest Design in Tech Report 2017 divulged that since 2014 more than 60 design firms were bought among which 50% of acquisitions happened in last 3 years. We find it interesting to investigate and understand data in terms of India's context. If you find our stories interesting, keep reading www.surfaces.in and Surfaces Reporter magazine.

Thank you, Mam, for your help. I am learning a lot in this firm. The staff is also very friendly. Waiting to be a part of WADE 2017. - A sweet note from one of the Young Designers interning at a reputed architecture firm, through WADE India
I love the profession of Architecture. And urge specially the woman architects to be the voice which creates and instils life in every building you build. Ideas come when you reflect, think, and want to meet the higher purpose of it, which is original. And that’s where I feel, women designers can play a major role. Dr. Kiran Bedi, Lt. Governor, Puducherry
