editorial

Material Library for the Building industry At Surfaces Reporter, we talk materials, dream materials and even breathe materials. Our eyes are glistened at the thought of new possibilities with materials and innovative ways products are used. And as ever, our hearts crave for more. We perspire to go beyond the available means in order to find & publish the latest & innovative products in Surfaces Reporter magazine. Much before the birth of this magazine, we have been at a spree to visit more and more places, people, exhibitions, manufacturing plants, events, to understand new products and use of materials. The madness just grew with every passing month and presently it seems to have come to a position wherein we are exploding with loads of information yet so restrained by the limited space in the magazine. Though I am delighted with the successful launch of SHOWCASE COLLECTOR'S EDITION 2016 Vol-III, the so called "Material Library for Building industry," yet we have noted that the current issue which is close to 300 pages could not justify what we intended to deliver. The story repeats every month. This has led us to contemplate on ideas that can help us deliver better, more, and with increased frequency while the printed version will retain its charm. Just as Surfaces Reporter is not just another magazine, we do not want to be just another website or portal. I invite your suggestions at vertica@surfaces.in. The latest addition in this issue is “Material Poetries”. Though a lot of improvisation is required which will happen in due phases, the attempt to discuss one design/ application at a time is the beginning of looking at projects in a much focused way. The designs to be discussed are selected through several layers of introspection. Projects are from seasoned and upcoming designers. I believe, when we discuss one design at a time with all the ‘emotions & lessons’ involves, sharing becomes teaching, reading becomes learning, and the story becomes an inspiration for many. Five years back, we started with the tag line, "India's 1st & only dedicated Material-centric magazine for Architecture & Interiors," I hope Surfaces Reporter is able to keep up with the promise and able to help architects & designers to find information & inspiration about materials & products through our issues. Some of the product sections are truncated in order to include “Material Poetries”. We shall cover them up in our coming issues. We feel wonderful to get your messages & suggestions. Tell us if you have any comments about this issue.

When an idea embraces materials, different forms & expressions are born. As the touch of a musician brings life to an inert musical instrument, a material comes to life when a designer actualizes an idea with it. MATERIAL POETRIES BY SURFACES REPORTER is a place to share the untold stories behind designs, along with all the “emotions and learnings. Surfaces Reporter believes that we discuss one design at a time, sharing becomes teaching, reading becomes learning, and story becomes an inspiration. The purpose is to inspire and facilitate learning. These stories are from various projects, from the seasoned and upcoming ones together. We hope you will like our first attempt at bringing forth the untold stories. Eagerly waiting to know more, write to us at press@surfaces.in. OCTOBER 2016 SURFACES REPORTER 22

From the exclusive collection of Surfaces Reporter

MATER!AL QU‘O’TES by Indian Architects & Designers Surfaces Reporter has been collecting QUOTES on Materials, Buildings, Building industry and Application techniques. Here are some of the quotes on Materials from our collection. Write to madhu@surfaces.in for submitting your Quote. “Natural materials like Sandstone, Bronze and Wood form the basis of my designs, but I also use concrete and modern technology. We should not close our eyes to the new materials.” - Ar. Raj Rewal, Raj Rewal Associates New Delhi

“Though ACP was expensive than other façade materials when launched, the construction industry evaluated ACP as a better alternate in terms of light weight, ease of fabrication, handling and faster construction as well as lesser maintenance.” - Ar. C N Raghavendran C R Narayayana Rao Chennai

“Ceramics is not just art and technology, it is science as well. When the volcanoes erupted, it scorched the surrounding soil to such a great extent that nature in its magical magnificient manner showed the Human what temporary and permanence is, and in this process opened up with each different soil a new chemistry of tiles.” - Prof. K. Jaisim, Jaisim Fountainhead, Bangalore

“We have the best of materials available in India but the proliferation of these materials in the market is extremely conservative. Entities who bring these materials in the market need to innovate strategies of reaching their target audience.” - Ar. Ninad Tipnis JTCPL Designs Mumbai

“We would like to use some of the breakthrough materials like Polymers and Carbon fibres and light weight alloys in our projects, with some really cool alternate materials & technology!”

“We are trying to go back to the old and exploring bamboo as a structural material. The market is flooded with new materials and it’s an important task to keep up with it.”

- Ar. Lalita Tharani, Collaborative Architects Mumbai

- Ar. Sonal Sancheti, Ar. Rahul Gore opolis, Mumbai

Exposed Concrete and Copper have interesting reactions with various climates. I love to enjoy that challenge with time and change in climate.” - Ar. Abin Chaudhari, Abin Design Studio Kolkata

“We use materials in their natural for. With harsh sun falling on wood, concrete, brick, stone or metal, we are able to get profound textures, much like carvings do to a temple in tropical light. While our buildings remain truly embedded in nature, our approach to sustainability I’d taking green and adding a little blue for open mindedness, so environmentalism goes hand in hand with science - a turquoise approach to architecture.” -Gurjit Singh Matharoo Matharoo Associates Ahmedabad

“We love working with Natural Wood & Marble and have constantly been trying to experiment with these to make our projects unique.” - Ar. Zubin Zainuddin, ZZ Architects, Mumbai

“Carbon fibre is one of the product which if becomes economical can revolutionize the industry to a great extent!’ - Ar. Khozema Chitalwala Designers Group Mumbai

“For me, Wood is an unlimited source of inspiration. It takes a lot of judgment to look at a piece of wood and know if it will warp, or splinter, or pop off. It expands and it contracts and it splits. It’s art.” - Anish Motwani Anish Motwani Associates Mumbai

“Glass is one of the most experimented materials. Among the recent innovations, ‘Living Glass’ is a proposition created with science of nano molecular droids such that if the glass surface is damaged or hampered, it can self heal to get back to normal. This evolution may take years of work but the outcome would definitely be revolutionary.” - Kunal Pakhar Designers, Mumbai
