"A thorny path to a beautiful destination is worth trudging" - vertica dvivedi

N

othing worthwhile ever comes easy. The road to any goal goes through action and experiences. Embarking on a roller coaster ride becomes bearable if you are clear about your goal. And do not hesitate to keep a Plan-B ready. For many reasons, I was desperate to start working while in class XI. I was in science stream. Circumstances were also not favourable, moreover, I lived with my aunt who would never allow my unusual whims & fancies to ever grow wings. So in a way,

nothing was in my control, except my thoughts & beliefs.

I started to visualize about working while studying, that too on something creative which can immerse me into deep ocean of dreams, quite unlike school. Those thoughts were so beautiful that at times I would deliberately drift into such moments in between my studies. One day, my cousin sister (didi) took me along; to an organization she was visiting. To pass time, I was reading a newspaper, and almost jumped on noticing my poem published in it. Didi who was quite embarrassed, explained the matter to the curious person sitting on the other side of table, and in no time, he offered me to design the communication for a UPS company that belonged to his friend. While returning, didi warned me not to even think of getting into such things and to tear off the address. I had some other plan. Next day right after school, I ran to the UPS office. My school dress was wet due to rain. As I was looking through their glass door, trying to figure out it is open or not, someone opened the door from inside. In the interview most of my answers were 'no' because I knew nothing, never worked, no experience, etc. However, I was extremely confident about doing the best. I wanted that work desperately. The bearded man looked strangely at me and then said, "Show me tomorrow what you can do." I was so delighted that I took the papers and went out without my school bag. Someone came after me to give my bag. "I can catch up sleep tomorrow," I said to myself and worked for the whole night. Even in school next day, my mind was filled with images & ideas of UPS. Next day, when I went to show my work, the bearded man was not present. As a school girl, it was beyond my understanding what I should do. Coming again was not easy. I requested his team to look at my work and tell me but no one paid attention. The lady receptionist kept my files and said they will call. I tried to explain how important this assignment was for me but she just continued her work even without looking at me. Back home, I started waiting for the call and dreaming of my first project. But the call never came. Deeply discouraged & saddened, after 10-15 days, I had lost all hopes and settled back to routine. I was glad I didn't share this with others.

I started waiting for the call and dreaming of my first project. But the call never came. Deeply discouraged, I had lost all hopes and settled back to routine. I was glad I didn't share this incident with others. One evening as I got down from school bus, a guy in a motorbike stopped by and informed that Mr. Mukherjee wants to meet me. Anxiously, I reached there without giving a chance to my mind to weave more dreams. I was exhausted. I smiled at the receptionist. Without returning a smile back, she showed me toward the conference. I sat there biting my lips. The bearded man joined me. Strangely, he was smiling, and asked me about my school, studies, family, but not a word about the work. Finally with a heavy heart, I asked the grave question. He asked back, "you didn't see?" I said, "no". He turned back and gave me the printed designs. I cannot express how elated I was feeling to see my work, as if I was flying in the sky. It almost seemed to me like I was dreaming with my eyes wide open. I was in tears. Not knowing how to pacify me, he called in for the lady receptionist. The good lady was as expressionless as ever which made me laugh. This is the story of my first project. We all strive for goals & experiences that complete us. While having a broader vision, it is important to accomplish smaller goals. Someday, I will share my experience of starting WADe India. If you are facing difficult time which is pushing you away from your goal, remember, the darkest hour is just before the dawn. So, do not quit. With the vision of the destination ahead, stand up every time you fall. A thorny path to a beautiful destination is definitely worth trudging!

I was interacting with so many women peers for the first time in the last 25 years. It was such an enriching experience for me as I have been mostly working in my own silo for years without much interaction with the fraternity. You put together such a fine event with every little detail worked out and coupled with outstanding hospitality. Congrats to Vertica, Madhurima and WADe team.

The WADe Asia Conference gave me the opportunity to reconnect with many long lost Indian friends through my journey in life. It gave me opportunities and platform to make new friends which was wonderful. I was surprised at the number of person who came had said that that they enjoyed my presentation. Thanks to Madhu & Neha for so skillfully conducting the WADe Conference!

Vertica....loved you yesterday...that girl whom I met in 2016 has grown multifold. You spoke from your heart during WADe and danced with your soul. Bringing so many of us together from the sub-continent is not easy. WELL DONE!!!!

For a young architect such as me, hearing architects of the like of Didi Contractor was truly inspirational. It's absolutely commendable to have seen the architects you brought together from such diverse backgrounds and places, and with such a rich body of work.

ounded by Vertica Dvivedi, WADe was launched as WADe India in May 2016. The launch was graced by the presence of ‘woman of substance’, Dr. Kiran Bedi who had fondly shared her experience in designing the New Tihar Jail along with the architect. There were presence of eminent celebrity designers Sussanne Khan with her mom Zarine Khan. Television star Hussain Kuwajerwala hosted the WADe Awards. WADe as a concept received a lot of applause.

WADe Asia is glad that female designers have started to get value out of the conclave and so many men from the industry are standing by WADe to support spreading of women-led development.

In continuation of the same, the recently concluded annual celebration of WADe Asia 2017 received enormous response. “Attended by more than 700 Architects, Designers & Artists over 2 days, the coming together of 6 countries, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Thailand, WADe Asia was magnanimous beyond our imagination,” said Madhurima Chowdhury, Associate Director, WADe Asia.

WADe India Special Contribution Award for Social Cause. She is passionately steering Shelter Associates that works to improve the quality of life of India’s urban poor, by delivering low-cost housing and sanitation solutions in urban slums. Neelam Manjunath from Bangalore is an architect, planner, activist and theoretician. Since decades, she is doing remarkable work in promoting one of the most versatile naturally available materials, Bamboo. She has been awarded WADe India Sustainability Champion 2017.

WADe was aptly supported by the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), Bhutan Institute of Architects (BIA), Society of Nepalese Architects (SONA) and Confederation of Women Entrepreneurs (COWE).

Neha Barua, Associate Director, WADe Asia is pleased to receive numerous messages from delegates sharing what they have taken back from WADe Asia.

The Keynotes by Didi Contractor, Padma Bhushan awardee Rajeev Sethi, Christopher Charles Benninger and Nela de Zoysa from Sri Lanka were most enthusiastically attended. WADe Asia is proud to have speakers like Shimul Javeri Kadri, Anupama Kundoo, Sonali Bhagwati, Parul Zaveri and Canna Patel in ‘WADe Masterclass with Mentors’ which was one of the highlighting sessions. Young architect, Manishi Aggarwal communicated the questions to the mentors on behalf of the aspiring ones.

The coming together of women in design during WADe Asia was a joyful gathering. Neha said, “In our years of experience in the industry, we realized that women hardly network. Amidst managing professional commitments, family responsibilities and self, networking sub-consciously takes a backseat. Something always comes-up that ranks above networking in a women’s priority list. WADe is glad to receive numerous messages from delegates and speakers sharing what they have taken back from WADe Asia.”

With a host of Panel Discussions, Keynotes, Masterclass, Book launches, Students Workshop in association with IIA, WADe Asia had apt dose of entertainment as well. “ I am delighted Vertica ji, to see people from South Asia in WADe. More power to you so that this forum grows and I’m sure only women will do it. Men might be much slower. They should really connect here with women from all over south Asia and be able to make a statement that needs to be heard!”

Shri Rajeev Sethi

“The things that have taken millennia to build up, from deep history are going or gone and I think this is due to a ruthlessness that we have to heal and I propose a total revolution.”

Didi Contractor

“Suddenly, I had started thinking Internationally, I was doing things I would have never done before and I learn about people’s relationships, how they work and I think it’s very exciting to me”

Ar. Christopher Charles Benninger

“Amongst those who broke away from the post colonial idiom, at that time was Geoffrey Bawa who made a huge impact on Sri Lankan Architecture referring back to the vernacular in his works.”

Nela De Zoysa

It is not difficult to manage several roles. You need to be alert to the challenges which your town/city is constantly throwing at you. They need to be grasped and then engaged with. If you push the boundaries; both, of our own discipline/ profession and of our own capabilities/ engagements you will discover new terrains.

Ar. Neera Adarkar

“The profession of architecture needed a platform like WADe to encourage women architects to pursue their profession in their own right and not as a supportive professional to the male fraternity.”

Neelam Manjunath

“I think as a Women Entrepreneur, my greatest strength is Empathy. As a woman working in the development sector, I am able to connect to the issues particularly faced by underprivileged women in slums where they lack access to the most basic services like Sanitation and water”

Pratima Joshi

Sorting the keywords such WADe, Women, WorkingWomen, Willpower, World, Winning, we knew from the first few rounds of brainstorming at our agency, that the seed to our foundation for the work was “W”. This was our “What” & next, was the “Who”.
