Dear Friends, Festival Greetings! One of our most sought after issues – ‘THE COLLECTORS EDITION Vol-3’ was back with a bang in October! Tremendous hard work since the last few months made me to dream of a break. I did exclaim, 'Minimum break of two months is a must after this issue!' The same was with my team. But as the issue reached the market and responses started pouring in, it seems the love & applause we are receiving for this issue has made us double energised. The current issue was completed in a record time of 10 days!!! Thank you all for the continuous encouragement. Keep writing to us with your suggestions & submissions. Surfaces Reporter’s Material Poetries - Untold Stories introduced in the Special Edition has been a super success with more projects & appreciation pouring in together for the same. We are delighted with the response and to see such amazing works being done by architects & designers even in smaller cities & towns apart from the metros. As a result, you will be glad to know, we have decided to incorporate it as a regular section in Surfaces Reporter. More power to you! Talk of Town is the name given to the Talk-Series by Surfaces Reporter. In association with WADe India, one of the topics discussed was: “Alternate yet connected Career options for Women Architects & Designers who need to take a break from the mainstream.” Adapting to the changing needs of the society is the goal of humanity. Our lifestyles are changing and so are spaces. Spaces today are no longer meant for specific purpose only. Like multipurpose furniture, we want to use our spaces for multiple uses. Surfaces Reporter coined the term ‘SPACE INNOVENTION’ for this topic. And for the first time, shared spaces were discussed as a subject. Read the excerpts from the Talk Session on Shared Spaces organised by Surfaces Reporter on the 15th October in New Delhi, in association with OBL, an equally likeminded and passionate brand. Last but not the least; it was amazing to receive the ‘COWE India Excellence Award’ from Confederation of Women Entrepreneurs for driving Surfaces Reporter Magazine successfully. It’s a feat which I had not imagined in such as short duration of 5 years. I dedicate this to my team & the readers of Surfaces Reporter magazine

The first was held in Delhi in association with Orient Bell Limited at their newly designed & re-launched exclusive company owned boutique at GK-II New Delhi. It was a grand success with a great turnout and engaging panel discussions.

Guests enjoyed a fine musical evening with relishing refreshments arranged by Arjun Sagar from The Piano Man. The highlights of the evening were the topics, ‘Space Innovention: The evolution of shared & collaborative spaces’ and ‘Alternate yet connected career options for women architects during break from mainstream’. Both the topics resonated with the audience in the gathering and there was post session discussion with the guests. Manish Gulati, Principal, M:OFA Studios Pvt. Ltd. New Delhi, Ar. Ishvinder Kaur and Ar.Vikas Sabharwal, Principals, ivpartners, Gurgaon. The discussion provided some thoughtprovoking views on the ongoing Shared homes,

SPACE INNOVENTION

The evolution of shared & collaborative spaces.

From Left, Ar.Vikas Sabharwal & Ishvinder Kaur from ivpartners, Gurgaon, Ar. Manish Gulati M:OFA Studios, New Delhi & Dr. Anuradha Chaterjee, Academic at Shristi School of Art, Design and Technology Bangalore

Collaborative spaces or Co-working spaces are terms we heard of but probably couldn’t ever realise how big & evolved these would be all of a sudden in India. The spark started with some startups venturing out on creating co-working plug & play offices. Today, this is no more limited to startups & offices. Big time businesses are foraying into this. Surfaces Reporter is excited & glad to be the first magazine in the fraternity to hold the pulse of evolving space design punctuated by shared spaces and having a discussion on the same. The way we are using Space is changing. This is an age of Shared office spaces and vacation Homes. For instance, AirBnB helps people to list, find, and then rent vacation homes. It has over 1,500,000 listings in 34,000 cities and 191 countries. Awfis Space Solutions aims at providing plug and play offices spaces, embedded with the latest technology solutions for ‘just-in-time’ space utilization. Innov8 is also into co-working office solution. We already know how OYO rooms are coming up everywhere. Bla Bla Car is helping people to share space while travelling. More such ideas are mushrooming. Surfaces Reporter feels Collaborative Spaces are the future of the evolving workforce. Starbucks coined the term ‘third space,’ which became an alternative to a home office, or a place to relax which is different from home or an office. So if home is the ‘first space,’ work is the ‘second space,’ and coffee shops are the ‘third space,’ then perhaps coworking is the ‘fourth space’ for the evolving workforce. Moderated by Dr. Anuradha Chaterjee, Academic at Shristi School of Art, Design and Technology (Bangalore), the Panelist of the sessions were Ar. Manish Gulati, Principal, M:OFA Studios Pvt. Ltd. New Delhi, Ar. Ishvinder Kaur and Ar.Vikas Sabharwal, Principals, ivpartners, Gurgaon. NOVEMBEr 2016 SURFACES REPORTER 118

Presenting the 1st ever discussion on Shared Spaces in India, by Surfaces Reporter magazine. Speaking about Shared Economy of design, Ar. Manish Gulati touched upon the need of current emerging demographics and the major challenges that Designers would face due to the emergence of shared spaces. “Shared spaces are more a virtue of financial management than space design. More than 50% of Indian population is below 35 years & more than 65% is below 25 years. It is interesting to note that country is witnessing at least 2-3% growth in GDP every year.” A shared co-working space is about providing services to these demographics. Whether is Ola, Uber, AirBnB everything is catering to the same segment. He stressed, “We need a model that works for all, i.e., from the least paid to the highest paid. The moment you talk about large singular office spaces or any space for a singular function, it doesn’t really work for them. Designers are getting a major challenge of going beyond from singular design options to providing an actual ‘Working Space’. People really want to invest wisely so they need a place where they can smartly invest their money, do the business and come back. In order to save money, you must have a proper financial planning, that’s the call of the hour. The whole equation is changed from the area available for design to the budget available for design. How to economize the whole design is a major challenge for any designer today. It’s no longer about beautiful pictures downloaded from internet or selling a very flashy idea, but, it is all about having efficient spaces in limited budget and yet making the impossible possible.”

Surfaces Reporter

I think the business of shared co-working spaces is going to be a big market and this is just a start and will further develop. Ar Vikas Sabharwal took our attention to the key elements to consider while designing shared spaces. “We have been using shared spaces since time immemorial in the form of roads, transport, railways etc. There are two principles of Designing Shared Spaces. First this is Equitable Use; a design must be suitable & marketable for people from diverse ethnicities & abilities. Accessibility is the key to design. The shared spaces have to be accessible for all communities alike. The second principle is Flexibility of use. For instance, a place used by children as well as adults, the height of the furniture should be adjustable according to the user. The third one is Ease of usage. One must be able to understand a particular space and its usage just by looking at it. The user should be able to comprehend its functions properly.

We should be able to use the Shared spaces with the minimum level of fatigue be it a young or an old person. These spaces should be able to deal with the functions irrespective of the mobility or other issues.” Agreeing with what Ar. Sabharwal said, Ar. Ishvinder Kaur said, “For designers, the shared spaces are very exciting opportunity. The spaces have to be functional, easy to use, easy to maintain etc. It is like integrating more functional spaces in one single space. It has to be comfortable for all age groups or the diverse range of people using them. Technology is also getting integrated in these shared spaces. It has changed the way people use these spaces and made it much more convenient.” To this, Ar. Gulati added, “There are so many people coming from varied backgrounds so the companies have to create design accordingly which is comfortable & acceptable to all.”

IS ThErE A NEEd fOr A STANdArdIzEd mOdEl Or mANuAl fOr dESIgNINg ShArEd SPACES? Ar. Manish Gulati: Architects do know their job. However, a standardized model is required to put down certain by laws or parameters for creating a shared space design which could work as a manual. I believe the architects must have the dignity to step back and say ‘Let this whole phenomenon happen as the chain reaction.’

Ar. Ishvinder kaur: I think the business of shared co-working spaces is going to be a big market and this is just a start and will further develop. I believe there will be classification like Luxury Shared Spaces, Semi-luxury shared spaces, generic shared spaces etc. For instance, I stay close to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon. All the OYO rooms in vicinity of the hospital have turned to medical stay facility for outdoor patients and their families. This is one instance which tells us that the bifurcation among the industry is slowly picking up and this is just the start. Going ahead, I think it’s going to be very exciting for designers. Ar. Vikas Sabharwal: I would also support the fact that there is need to set up a manual for designing such shared spaces. I remember when McDonalds came to India in 90’s there was a set of manuals given to architecture firm to design the restaurants which resulted in quick escalation in number of McD outlets all across the country which initially the firms enjoyed but later on became like cookie cutting work for them. Similarly, for the young architects this is going to be exciting while for the matured 20-30 year old firms, this would be like cookie cutting business since much of creativity may not be involved.”

fINAlly dr. ChATTErjEE ASkEd All ThE PANElISTS AbOuT ThE fuTurE Of ShArEd lIVINg- 30 yEArS dOwN ThE lINE. “30 years is a long time,” smiled Ar. Gulati. “Have you seen Matrix and understood the concept of MAYA. We won’t need a space more than 4x4 ft thirty years down the line.” “In 30 years, there will be people all around. You will be everywhere since you will be travelling around. So in the nutshell, you will be using the space but those spaces will not belong to you,” quipped Ar. Kaur. Ar. Vikas Sabharwal feels Technology Integration & Cybertecture is the future. You may walk into a mall and there you are welcomed with your name. “Basically you carry your own space around and everything else is shared. This is what I see in future.”

Surfaces Talks WADE INDIA | TALK SERIES DELHI

AlTErNATE yET CONNECTEd CArEEr OPTIONS fOr wOmEN ArChITECTS & dESIgNErS durINg brEAk frOm mAINSTrEAm wOrkINg

From Left, Vertica Dvivedi, Founder, Surfaces Reporter & WADe India, Tanya Khanna, Founder & Director, Epistle Communications, Ar. Manishi Aggarwal, Co-Founder, Design Cosmos & Ar. Priyanka Khanna, Principal, 42mm Architecture

WADe India, the federation of World Women Architects & Designers was launched in 2016 to connect the women of the industry, and also to be instrumental in bringing some important issues to the fore that needs solution. During the launch, role models and young talented women designers were felicitated. Dr. Kiran Bedi opened up the platform with a powerful speech about her experience while designing the Tihar Jail. More than 350 delegates attended the gala event that set the ball rolling for initiatives in the segment of Women in Design. Some objectives of WADe India are:

◆ Ensuring visibility of Women-led projects ◆ Bridging Mentorship between Leading & Aspiring Designers ◆ Standing by those who want to come back to the profession ◆ Encouraging, Sharing & Learning through Research ◆ Celebrating the Life, Work and Achievements of Women Architects & Designers

◆ Rewards & Recognition

Survey by WADe India points out that a lot of women architects & designers never return back to the profession, once they take a break for playing their biological roles as mother, wife etc specially if the break is in tune of one or more years. Many women we talked to attribute this to family needs. Those who are wishing to return find challenge in managing the tough working hours, traveling, staying updated with work needs, and not getting enough of peer and company support. They get disconnected from the industry. While there are women in the fraternity who are managing both the worlds beautifully, we are focusing on those women who need a bit of hand holding. Our survey suggests, these are mostly the women who do not have any other Architect or Designer in the family. With this category as the target segment, WADe believes that if these women pursue alternate yet connected career options for the specific period of break (we are assuming a period of 1 to 3+ years), she will stay connected, updated and it will be smoother for her to join the mainstream as and when she finds it comfortable. Through this discussion, WADe India is seeking to find some of the best options to pursue during break. NOVEMBEr 2016 SURFACES REPORTER 120

bEST wOrkINg OPTIONS fOr A wOmAN ArChITECT Or dESIgNEr durINg A brEAk whICh gIVES hEr flExIbIlITy Of TImINg & kEEPS hEr CONNECTEd: Ar. Priyanka Khanna - Architecture as a field is changing in a very positive way by becoming more collaborative and inclusive. There are a lot of career options available for women today wherein they can not only take care of their families but remain connected to the field of architecture as well. One could be ARChITECTURE JOURNALISM where they can collaborate with design magazines; online portals etc., and can write and participate in architectural discussion. This way they are not contributing in a single project but to the architecture as whole. Architecture is also a very generic field so rather than contributing to the whole spectrum, they can be a specialist for one field. For instance they can be a FAçADE OR FENESTRATION CONSULTANT. There they can be connected to cladding companies, Glass companies or other building skin technicians to build up their career. They can be INTERIOR STyLIST as we all know that aesthetic today is also coming up as functional architecture. Such profession do not require a team per say and they can work independently with flexible hours. Ar. Manishi Aggarwal- The foundation of this discussion is, everybody must understand that for a woman, her family is as important as her career is. Of course, the whole society doesn’t have that perception but we are assuming that it has so. According to me anyone who is planning to return to the field of architecture after a semi-break must stay updated of all the happenings in the industry. So all my options revolves around how can we stay updated during that period. One way is Photography. There is a huge demand

Surfaces Reporter of ARChITECTURAL PhOTOGRAPhy. That way you are completely updated about what are the projects being designed, innovations being done etc. You can be in touch with lots of architecture firms where you can provide photography services to their projects. The second option is DOCUMENTING ThE PROJECTS. By documenting, we don’t mean simply documenting the end product but the entire process of designing right from the idea, to design brief, brainstorming, material selection, construction process, till the end product gets ready. This is something we are currently experimenting with in our office now. The person who is documenting the entire process needs not to be there for the whole time but can come at flexible timings, during few hours a day or may be few days a week and can interact with the team. It is a great way to know about the project, technologies, materials being used, innovations etc. Thirdly, BLOGGING is very popular these days. When you read and stay updated with what’s happening while simultaneously writing, you can be completely aware while actually contributing to the thought process in architecture and design. Ar. Tanya Khanna - I have a Masters in Architecture and run Epistle Communications. I stayed in architecture then took a step back primarily because, content that architects produce, on a daily basis, never gets recorded. Coming back to the question of alternate career options, I believe, one can really stay connected with the profession through ARChITECTURE EDUCATION. Every architectural college in India need panelist having on field architectural experience to teach students. So it can be a great way to stay connected. Also, I strongly feel that women need not to make alternate career choice. If one wants to continue with architecture please do as our family supports our work. I have a child yet I haven’t taken a break from my work for a single day. Even in the hospital I was sending my emails. I have taken help from everybody be it husband, in laws, parents or friends. That’s how I stick to what I love to do. You must do what you love to do and then the alternates are there to actually balance it out. Architecture firms have evolved and diversified today. They have verticals like HR, Admin etc. Many architecture firms are documenting their work even writing books on their buildings so there is a need for people who can do this. Even in my work which is not an architecture firm, we have architects and interior designers working. So I would suggest everyone to not give up and keep sailing, you would eventually find your passion. Also, a lot of firms now-a-days have flexible timings and allow women to work from home. With the technology & tools like Dropbox, the work has become much easier.

jOb PrOfIlES wIThIN ArChITECTurE & dESIgN fIrmS ThAT CAN OffEr flExIblE wOrkINg Or wOrk AT hOmE OPTIONS: Ar. Priyanka Khanna: As designers, we lack certain things like communication & PR. So I believe there should be an IN-hOUSE PR AND COMMUNICATION PERSON for the curating the project information. This could be a good career option. Besides, in our office, we are also trying to develop a continues Research & Development team that can curate a Design Pool or Material Pallet consisting of proper documentation of new materials, designs and innovations which would help in working on any new project. Ar. Manishi Aggarwal: After we had our baby earlier this year, we came up with an initiative of having a crèche/ day care near our office so that people who recently had a baby can get their baby to the work. I don’t understand the concept in our country where

You cannot have half of your population sitting at home just because there is a domesticated need. You must be able to bring your office home. women get fired after taking pregnancy leaves. It’s really shocking. Talking about profiles within an architecture office, a woman can opt for GRAPhIC DESIGN, 3D VISUALIzATION, etc. Also you can start off something called Archipedia, that just like Wikipedia, would assemble all the information, articles, jargons, words etc about architecture and curated at one platform. Architecture is everywhere. It is not a singular profession as there is design in everything. So it is not hard to find a profession that can keep your passion towards architecture alighted. This is the need of the hour. You cannot have half of your population sitting at home just because there is a domesticated need. You must be able to bring your office home. Ar. Tanya Khanna: We do have architects and designers in our firm actually working to build up the right Content for the projects. These are the people who have actual experience of building things up. Even SOCIAL MEDIA is a big tool today. I believe today every firm wants to have that in house profile. Other professions could be FURNITURE DESIGN OR PRODUCT DESIGN where one can contribute its creativity significantly. Architecture is a profession that doesn’t bind us for anything. So in reality, we can choose whatever we would aspire to do.

mESSAgE TO wOmEN whO wISh TO rETurN TO ThE PrOfESSION, yET fEEl hESITANT: Ar. Tanya Khanna: My first message is ‘Talk to people around you.’ People are really hesitant to talk because of the way we have been brought up in our society. Talk to your ex-employees/ employers, talk to your mentors etc. Your confidence will build up once you start the dialogues with the right people. Ar. Manishi Aggarwal: I would say ‘Have the will to come back’. I have seen people who have the desire to come back to profession but are so engrossed in their lives, that they couldn’t do so. You have to have your own time other than dedicating the entire time for the family. Find the will which is inside you and you can do it. Ar. Priyanka Khanna: I think the initiative WADe has taken is very inspiring as you get to know and talk to the people who have already been in the same situation who have come back to the profession. So talk to people, read about people which will give you ample strength to move towards your goal. Secondly, be patient. Architecture is a profession where you have to be updated with current trends.

Finally, Vertica Dvivedi concluded the Take away from this session as: Drop the guilt, talk to people and most importantly, stay connected, as staying connected will help to make things happen. We hope this initiative by WADe India along with Surfaces Reporter helps women from architecture, design & various connected fields to take note, open up, connect with us and benefit from the discussions & initiatives happening to come back to the mainstream once again.
