Gruppi affiatati che nel corso di questi anni sono sempre diventati più numerosi e lungo le coste di tutta l’Italia si sono affermati come i “Surfisti Mediterranei” dando vita al crescere esponenziale di questo sport e alla nascita del mercato legato ad esso per finire con la crescita di punti vendita, meglio identificati in luoghi di ritrovo pronti a soddisfare nel migliore dei modi anche i surfisti più esigenti. Uno dei tanti punti di ritrovo,

Punto vendita, ma sopratutto luogo di incontro per una nuova generazione di surfisti che grazie alla recente costruzione del Pontile di Marina di Pietrasanta si sono raggruppati e stando dando vita ad una giovane e fresca community locale appoggiata da leggende del surf nostrano come Ronnie Baldini “The Legend”, surfista “anarchico” e personaggio emblematico, schivo nei confronti delle competizioni e fenomeno incompreso del surf moderno. urfing has always been a gathering sport for a lot of people sharing the same passion for sea and waves. In the last years a lot of really close groups became larger and larger. They became known as Mediterranean Surfers and they let surfing and its market expand larger and larger. All of this is closely related to the opening of many retail stores ready to satisfy even the most demanding surfers. One of these hangout is Quiksilver Boardriders in Marina di Pietrasanta: an highly qualified store born in a perfect location just near the seaside Pier.

This environment has been really prolific and it’s home for a new local community supported by a true legend of Italian surfing scene like Ronnie “The Legend” Baldini: “maverick” personality, bashful towards contests and misunderstood by modern surfing. Who saw him surfing once knows he is as good as the best Italian surfers. All the young surfers hanging around the Pier in Marina di Pietrasanta refer to him as The Legend. He is an inspiration for the kids and its reflected in the way they approach surfing. They built a real “Core”

avide Lopez, 19 anni, vive a Viareggio in Toscana ed è il più piccolo rider della famiglia Hurley Italy, nonché il “Grom of the Month” di cui vogliamo parlarvi in questo servizio. Da quest’anno Davide ha avuto la possibilità di farsi notare lungo le coste Liguri e Toscane grazie al supporto del suo surf shop di fiducia, INSIDE Boardshop, Hurley ed Etnies, che hanno creduto in lui dandogli la possibilità di migliorare il suo surf e mettersi in gioco. Fuerteventura è la sua seconda casa, dove trascorre le vacanze spesso e volentieri assieme ai suoi amici di avventure, adora la pasta con i würstel e prosciutto, odia la scuola, le meduse e tagliarsi con le pinne della tavola, cosa che gli capita spesso. Finta la maturità vuole partire per un lungo viaggio (Nias e California). Le misure della sua tavola ideale sono (5,6 x 18 1/8 x 2 1/8). La prima cosa che colpisce di Davide è quanto riesca facilmente a coinvolgere amici e conoscenti nei suoi progetti. Tutti lo rispettano e credono in lui. E’ sempre sorridente, motivato e pronto a farsi suggerire dai surfers più anziani. Il suo surf non è ancora del tutto maturo e sono tanti i wipe-out e i viaggi che dovrà ancora affrontare per migliorare il suo stile. A.C: Yes, now everyone can be a photographer and shoots out great photos. In my opinion you can define a real photographer who puts all his passion in photography and capacity. I suspect that what do a good photo is the person behind the camera, not the camera. Sincerely yes, I am a photographer, as long as I can take good photos I feel in peace with myself and at same time satisfied.

egli ultimi anni stiamo vivendo un vero e proprio flashback, un ritorno alle vecchie forme, agli shapes di una volta reinterpretati in chiave moderna. Basta guardare le tavole sotto braccio della gente, per capire che la tavoletta con le sue forme snelle, non è più lo shape per antonomasia. I cosiddetti “retrò”; i Fish Twinny, Quadfish, Bonzer, Mini Simmons, Singlefin, Egg, ecc. Shapes diversi, susseguitesi nel tempo, ritornano in questa che possiamo chiamare “bolla temporale” della surf-design nostrana. La crescente domanda di queste “nuove vecchie tavole”, ha sicuramente portato una ventata d’aria fresca nelle nostre shaping rooms, permettendo così ai nostri artigiani di creare qualcosa di diverso della solita tavoletta, consci del fatto che adesso il mercato sia di più ampie vedute. Come un giocatore di golf sceglie attentamente la mazza appropriata a seconda del tiro da effettuare, così adesso anche noi, allo stesso modo famosi per il nostro proverbiale sangue freddo davanti ad un set di onde, sceglieremo con “calma” la tavola più adatta per quel tipo d’ onda! n recent years, we are living a real flashback, a return to old shape, the shapes of the past reinterpreted in a modern key. Just look at the boards of the people under his arm, to understand that the short board with its elegant form, is not the only one anymore. The so-called “retrò”, the Twinny Fish, Quadfish, Bonzer, Mini Simmons, Singlefin, egg, etc. Different shapes, following one another in time, back to this that we can call “time bubble” of our local surf design. The growing demand for these “new old boards”, has certainly brought a breath of fresh air in our shaping rooms, allowing our artisans to create something different than the usual boards, conscious of the fact that now the market is of larger views. As a golf player chooses carefully the appropriate bat to make the shot, we, famous for our proverbial cold blood in front of a set of waves, we’ll choose easily the board more suitable for that kind of wave! And it’s in those situations where the waves are a bit weak hat i choose to use my let say “classic board”. Mini Simmons Black Magic Eta Model: 5.0 – 21 ½ – 2 5/8.

biamo optato per lo step-deck, ovvero un cambio repentino di volume dal centro ai bordi, raccordati in maniera più squadrata, in modo tale da avere, sia un bel volume nel mezzo, sia un bordo abbastanza sottile che più facilmente entri nella acqua. Lo step-deck inizia a ¾ della tavola e corre giù fino alla poppa. Sul tail ho preferito un volume molto più contenuto, vi spiego perché; purtroppo non riesco a spingere molto sulla gamba dietro, soprattutto nel bottom turn, quindi ho pensato che con meno volume dietro, avrei avuto maggiore governabilità della parte posteriore. Per quanto riguarda le pinne, ho detto ad Antonio di mettere le più grandi che avesse, proprio perché mi piace fare delle belle curve, di conseguenza ho bisogno di pinne molto grandi per evitare che la tavola vada in spin-out. Con le pinne di questa dimensione mi sono garantito un margine di errore più grande, così posso spingere senza aver paura di perdere aderenza. Nel bottom un leggero single concave che arriva fino a ¾ della tavola!

I like very fast and powerful curves, to cut the side of wave, so I wanted an edge thin enough that would allow a more easy turn, while maintaining a central volume to guarantee excellent flotation, therefore we opted for the step-deck, or a sudden change of volume from the center to the edges, connected in a more squared way, as to have both a nice volume in the middle, and an edge thin enough that more easily enters into the water. The step-deck starts to ¾ of the board and runs down to the stern. On the tail I preferred a smaller volume, I’m going to explain why, unfortunately I can not push hard on the back leg, especially in the bottom turn, so I thought that having less volume behind it, would facilitated the governance of the back. As regards fins, I said Antonio to put the biggest he had, just because I like nice curves, so I need very large fins to not let the board going into spinout. With the fins of this size I guaranteed myself a larger margin of error, so i can push without fear of losing grip. In a slight single concave bottom that goes up to ¾ of the table!

HOW IT GOES:

Instead of saying what kind of wave this board is indicated for, I simplify my life by telling you what kind of wave i like to surf! I tried it on the meter cable, it goes not well, the bottom is very difficult and the edge tends to embed very easily on the wave’s side, well being so broad and flat it should be expected! I had to wait a while to find its optimal condition, up to that moment I had lavished much, indeed, to say the truth I was a little disappointed! A wave wall with landslide and slope soft is what you need to hear this board the best. mi semplifico la vita dicendovi su quale tipo di onda mi piace surfarla! L’ho provata sul metro cavo, non è andata benissimo, il bottom risulta molto difficoltoso ed in parete il bordo tende a piantarsi molto facilmente, beh essendo così larga e piatta c’era da aspettarselo! Ho dovuto aspettare un po’ prima di trovare la sua condizione ottimale, fino a quel momento non mi aveva esaltato molto, anzi a dir la verità ero un po deluso! Un’onda con parete franosa e pendenza morbida è ciò che ci vuole per sentire questa tavola al meglio. Nelle prime onde non ci capivo molto, la tavola sembrava non voler entrare in planata. La colpa ovviamente era mia che volevo surfarla come una tavoletta, niente di più sbagliato, va lasciata correre, una sensazione favolosa, che mi ricorda quella della neve fresca! E’ molto più veloce di quanto pensassi ed in curva è strepitosa, i bordi e le pinne fanno molto bene il loro lavoro. La sensazione di scivolamento data da questo tipo di tavola è davvero appagante, un glide favoloso! Una volta mandata in planata vi assicuro che ci si possono azzardare anche off the lip degni della più agile delle tavolette, ma ovviamente la morte sua sono i curves a tutta birra, non c’ è niente di meglio! Lo spostamento di peso sulla tavola è essenziale, funge un po’ da acceleratore, basterà scaricare il peso sul piede davanti perché la tavola acceleri nuovamente, divertentissimo!

COSA CAMBIEREI:

Diminuirei ancora un po i volumi sia sul tail che sui bordi. Il bottom della tavola sarei curioso di provarlo del tutto piatto, magari con un concave solo tra le pinne e vedere cosa cambia.

CURIOSITÀ; STORIA DEL MINI SIMMONS.

Come classifichereste un modello di tavola creato solo nel vicino 2006? Di certo non la si potrebbe considerare una retrò board, vero? Perché è proprio del Mini Simmons che stiamo parlando, uno shape molto moderno ma da tutti etichettato come “vintage” o “old school”

e allora come mai questa inappropriata classificazione, se tale modello in realtà risulta essere così fresco? Siamo a fine anni 40 inizio 50 quando il famigerato surfista Bob Simmons applica studi matematici, idrodinamica e tecnologia aerea alla board designs. Il risultato di tali studi fu un 9 piedi twin fins dalla poppa molto larga e squadrata con i bordi molto paralleli fino in poppa, creata appositamente per il suo amico John Elwell, regalata poi alla sua fidanzata, era il 1949. Sfortunatamente Bob Simmons morì poco dopo nel 1954 alla giovane età di 35 anni, proprio facendo surf. How do you classify a model of board created only in 2006? Certainly you might not consider a retro board, right? Kenvin incuriosito, commissionò a Bauguess la realizzazione di tale prototipo in stile Simmons. Ma nessuno sapeva con precisione come

quella tavola fosse stata ideata da Bob tanti anni fa, c’ era solo la consapevolezza che fosse più larga e più corta delle altre tavole dell’ epoca. Bouguess dopo averci riflettuto non poco, non fece altro che levare dal centro della ormai consolidata 9 piedi di Simmon, quei tre piedi che avrebbero dato vita ad uno shape che subito fu apprezzatissimo da Kenvin e da tutti gli altri surfisti che la provarono, era il 2006, anno che segnò la nascita del Mini Simmons!

John Elwell, then donated to his girlfriend, it was 1949. Unfortunately Bob Simmons died shortly after in 1954 at the age of 35 years, just surfing. on Simone e qualche amico, abbiamo deciso di passare una settimana in Marocco, precisamente a Tagahzout a nord di Agadir, lontano dalle fredde mareggiate invernali Mediterranee. Ci siamo stabiliti in una piccola casa a ridosso della spiaggia, con una bella vista sul famoso spot di Anchor Point, immergendoci in pieno nella popolazione locale e sfruttando le due grosse swell da N/W, godendo di una buona settimana di onde di grossa misura. Guardare, stupiti, queste grosse onde srotolarsi perfettamente per centinaia di metri è stata una bellissima emozione che ricorderemo nel tempo. Spostandoci da uno spot all’altro, abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di osservare un’affascinante paesaggio pieno di colori e sfruttando, con fortuna, la forte influenza della marea, siamo sempre riusciti a surfare. Simone a volte è riuscito a usare anche il suo long oltre che la tavoletta ed il divertimento non è mancato. Spesso ci siamo soffermati a guardare surfisti più bravi di noi cavalcare delle onde che sinceramente non avevamo mai visto dal vivo e vi assicuro che il solo vederli mi faceva accapponare la pelle.

of the two big swells from N/W, enjoying of a nice week of big waves. It was a wonderful emotion to see amazed, these big waves unrolling perfectly for hundred yards, it’s something that we will ever remember. Moving from a spot to another, we had the opportunity to observe a landscape full of colors and exploiting, fortunately, the strong tide’s influence, we ‘re always able to surf. Simone used also his longboard sometimes, as well as the shortboard. We had lot of fun. We stopped often to see surfer greater than we are to ride waves that, to be honest, we’d never seen before live, and I can assure you that has been strong to see them. i svegli alle 6 di mattina, con gli occhi semi chiusi, dai un occhio alle webcam, non hai dormito tutta la notte per l’ansia di sapere come sarebbe stato il mare, e, puntualmente c’è vento. La mareggiata non è ancora entrata o magari non entrerà mai. Con queste premesse non so quante persone coltiverebbero la passione che unisce uno come me e le persone che praticano questo sport qui in Puglia. Eppure “noi” ci mettiamo tutta la dedizione possibile e arriviamo a sfiorare la follia, entrando in mare quando le condizioni sono al limite del praticabile o quando la colonnina di mercurio scende fino a toccare temperature a rischio assideramento. Nonostante il surf non sia uno sport facile da praticare qui, la sua diffusione sta prendendo piede. Purtroppo non essendoci una grande cultura di questo tipo di attività, non è difficile doversi ritrovare in line up in compagnia di persone che non hanno ancora afferrato l’ordine e le regole che accompagnano la pratica di questo sport, ma credo che col tempo si rivelerà necessaria l’adozione di queste ultime portando più unione nella comunità surfistica dentro e fuori dall’acqua, magari trasformandoci non solo in persone accomunate dalla stessa passione, ma anche in amici. Le giornate epiche, o comunque degne di nota, qui si contano sulla punta delle dita, e forse questo è uno dei motivi per cui le persone che vengono attirate da questo sport sono tendenzialmente più grandi, infatti credo di essere uno tra i più giovani praticanti, il che, a 23 anni, credo sia paradossale, ma quasi scontato, visto che solo ora si sta iniziando a vedere un’ apertura più massiccia da parte dei Pugliesi verso gli sport da tavola in generale, questo spero che porti un ricambio generazionale in modo da vedere anche i più giovani sulle line up.

ake up at 6 a.m., still sleeping get a look to the webcams, even if you hadn’t sleep all night long cause of the anxiety of knowing how will be the conditions of the sea, unfortunately it’s windy, the swell hadn’t arrived yet, or it will be not arriving at all. On this premise i really don’t know how many people could get interested in growing this passion that joins me and the people that practice this sport here in Puglia, but “we” are dedicating most of ourselves, getting even crazy, going surfing when the conditions are kinda stormy or when temperatures are getting freezing. Even if it’s a sport not simple to practice, its diffusion is growing, but unfortunately here we hadn’t any culture of this kind of sports for such a long time, so it’s not difficult to find yourself in the line up near to surfers that don’t care so much of rules and order of this sport, but my hope it’s to see in time that the adoption of them would be necessary, creating more joining between us, transforming us not just in surfers, but also in friends. Epic conditions here are just events that happen few times, and probably this is one of the reasons why people attracted by this sport are mostly older ones, and thinking that i am one of the youngest surfers at 23 years old, i think it’s paradoxical, but quite obvious, just because now the mind aperture of people here is going further to board sports cultures, thing that i hope would be attracting more kids and groms on the line ups.

S.C: Matteo Fabbri. Nato e cresciuto? M.F: Nato a Rimini 2 Marzo 1989, cresciuto a Riccione ridente cittadina sulla riviera romagnola, dove d’estate si può fare di tutto tranne il surf, purtroppo. Mi ritengo molto fortunato, in quanto la mia famiglia possiede uno stabilimento balneare proprio davanti alle secche migliori di tutta Riccione, cioè lato nord del porto, lo spot secondo me numero uno di tutta la riviera. Qui vi è la sede del mitico Monkey surf club fondato nell’estate del 1995 da mio padre, windsurfista dei primi anni ’70 e dai pionieri del surf Riccionese, i quali mi presero e mi buttarono letteralmente in acqua. D’inverno studio Architettura, concedendomi delle ampie pause per poter andare a surfare all’estero, mentre passo la stagione estiva lavorando dai miei come bagnino quindi sono sempre il primo ad entrare in acqua e l’ultimo ad uscire. S.C: Quiver. M.F: Penso di avere tra garage al mare e cantina a casa una cosa tipo una decina di tavole tra vecchie e nuove, ma le mie preferite sono: Infinity classic 9’2 x 23 x 3 longboard classicone fantastico con bordi 50/50; Infinity competitor 9’0 x 22 ½ x 2 ¼ una short travestita da long, che ti permette di fare di tutto; Al Merrick rookie 6’0 x 18 ¼ x 2 1/8 short vera e propria; Al Merrick Gravy 5’7 x 19 ½ x 2 7/16 gran bella tavola, velocissima; Infinity tombstone 5’4 x 21 ½ x 2 ¾ il mio mini simmons, bellissimo e divertentissimo ti regala delle emozioni indescrivibili; e una specie di alaia fatta in casa. M.F: He was born in Rimini on March 2nd 1989 and has grown up in Riccione, a nice city on the Adriatic coast, during the summer you can do everything but not surf, unfortunately. I feel lucky, because my family has a bathhouse just in front of the best reefs of Riccione, that is on the North side of the port., for me the best spot on that coast.Here you can find the legendary Monky surf club founded on Summer 1995 by my father, a windsurfer in early ‘70 and by the pioneers of Riccione’s surf, which push me in the water. I study Architecture during winter, taking long break to have surf in foreign countries, but i spend summertime working for my parents as bay watcher, therefore i’m always the first one get in to the water and last to get out. S.C: Quiver. M.F: between the garage on the sea and home cellar, i think i should have something like ten boards some new, some old, but my favorites are: Infinity classic 9’2x23x3 a fantastic real classic longboard with 50/50 edges, Infinity competitor 9’0x 22 ½ x 2 ¼ a short that seems a long that allows you to do anything, Al Merrick rookie 6’0

to era solo questione di tempo, infatti arrivò l’estate del’96 dopo aver fatto un paio di stagioni giocando con gli amici tra le onde con i primi body in polistirolo, mio padre, che aveva esperienza nelle costruzioni delle tavole da windsurf, mi costruì la mia prima tavola da surf, perfetta per imparare. Da li poi... iniziò tutto. S.C: Bodyboard, Longboard, Shortboard. Quale di questi ti si addice meglio? E perchè? M.F: L’aspetto più bello del mare e che ti puoi divertire e provare emozioni fantastiche con qualsiasi tipo di tavola, ma anche senza nessun attrezzo, solo te e il grande blu. Mi fa impazzire cambiare tipo di tavola in continuazione, provare nuovi shape e così via, mi stimolano sempre a cambiare il mio stile e l’approccio alle onde e quando poi torni alla tue, diciamo solite tavole, ti senti più ricco di esperienza e con delle strane sensazioni e ti accorgi di dettagli mai notati prima. Penso però che la tavola che mi si addice meglio sia il longboard in generale, sia quello classico, che quello moderno, sia per ragioni di pecunia di onde e poi perché mi permette di assaporare a pieno l’onda facendomi godere in ogni suo momento, da quando la vedi

S.C: It’s impossible to forget first time on board. What you remember? M.F: I think that my destiny was to slide on a board, with my father and the Monkeys that get in water just in front of my bathhouse, it was just time, in fact summer ‘86 came, after spender a couple of season playing with friends between waves and with first bodyboards in polystirol made by my father, that was an expert in realizing windsurf boards, he shaped my first surfboard, perfect to learn to surf. Everything started from this moment on... S.C: Bodyboard, longboard, Shortboard. Which is better for you? Why? M.F: The most beautiful aspect of the see is that you can have fun a feel strong emotions with any kind of boards, but also without nothing, just you and the huge blu. I love the fact that i can change shapes all the time, the possibility to try some new shapes and so on, they stimulate me to change my style, and the kind of approach with waves and when you come back to your usual boards, you feel more expert and with strange feelings and you reach new details that you never seen before...I think that the best board for me is the longboard in general, both the classic and the modern, ‘cause they’re better for small weaves, and because i can really feel the weave and i enjoy in every moment...from the moment that you first see it to the moment that you paddle for it to the line up again. S.C: Competitions and sponsor are often in contrast with real surf’s spirit. What do you think about it? M.F: I think that surf’s spirit doesn’t need of competitions

M.F: Penso che il vero spirito del surf non abbia bisogno ne di competizioni ne di conseguenza di sponsor; ma nel mio caso, parlando di competizioni mi viene in mente il motivo per cui ho partecipato al mio primo contest, il King of Grommets a Viareggio nell’estate 2003. Di solito durante la stagione estiva la mia famiglia è occupata, e anche allora non avrebbe mai avuto il modo di portarmi a surfare sulla costa ovest durante le mareggiate, decisi quindi di iscrivermi al contest, costringendoli così a portarmi sulle onde della Versilia per la prima volta. Da quella volta utilizzai sempre queste tattica per spostarmi lungo tutto lo stivale, e notai che vi era un mondo surfistico fantastico, pieno di ragazzi della mia età che si divertivano e surfavano molto molto bene. S.C: Il surf trip in cui hai avuto più paura di prendere qualche onda? M.F: L’ultima volta che ho avu-

Usually in summer my family is really busy, today as it was once and they would never had the possibility to bring me to the West coast during swells, so i decided to participate to the contest, forcing them to bring me to Versilia’s waves for the first time. Since that time, i always used this tactics to move all long the Boot, and i saw that there was a fantastic surf world, full of guys of same age of me, having fun and surfing really really good. I think this is a basic aspect of competitions: what attract me most, coming from a region with few weaves and surfers with not so much experience (surf was not much known and practiced), the contest was the only way to put yourself in comparison and get better your surf, creating new interests and opportunities. Of course you can reach new friendships with fantastic people sharing with you this wonderful sport that surf is. There fore i see competitions as a way to surf some unknown waves with old and new friends,

to paura, penso sia stato l’inverno del 2007 a Fuerteventura, a Hierro, c’era una grossa swell penso intorno hai 3/4 metri, mi ricordo che sono entrato in acqua con Alessandro Rigliaco, e una volta arrivato sulla line up, mi fece strano il fatto che vi era nessuno sul picco e quelle poche persone che erano in acqua avevano tavole un po’ più lunghe del normale e stavano stranamente a fianco del solito picco; all’arrivo del primo set capii subito il perché! Io avevo una 6’1 e ricordo che in 2 ore, penso di aver preso a malapena 5 onde… Ultimamente però mi piace buttarmi con mare grosso con il long, trovandomi spesso ad essere l’unico longboarder sulla line up, infatti torno molto frequentemente a casa dai miei viaggi con più pezzi di long nella sacca! S.C: Cosa significa “surfare in Adriatico”, pregi e difetti. M.F: Surfare in Adriatico. Bellissimo! Forse l’unico pregio che può avere e che a volte puoi surfare da solo! Ma ci sono, per fortuna, quelle rare giornate quando lo scirocco pompa dal sud dell’Adriatico, e un vento caldo da terra ti scalda, e vedi srotolare da vanti a casa tua barre perfette e infinite, tutti i tuoi amici che mollano tutto per correre in acqua, quelle sono le giornate dove non vorrei essere da nessuna parte che non al porto di Riccione. S.C: Come mai, molti sur fisti dell’Adriatico, spesso dicono “POWER”? M.F: Questa si che è una domanda power! Noi surfisti della riviera siamo stati tutti quanti contagiati dal fantastico Presidente con la “P” maiuscola, del Monkey surf club, il grande Andrea “President” Tordi che come un virus ha contagiato prima tutti noi surfisti di Riccione, fin da quando ho iniziato a surfare lo sentivo urlare questa parola in acqua all’arrivo di ogni set, e pian pianino tutta la

i inizia sempre così: Biglietto nave online, telefonata di rito, controllo delle previsioni meteo e non ci resta che partire. Piu o meno la prassi di ogni nostro viaggio, come molti dei vostri, è sempre la stessa. Quello che cambia è il posto, le onde, gli amici che ci aspettano a destinazione e gli anni di surf sulle spalle. Ad aspettarci nell’isola più conosciuta dai surfer di mezza Europa, “I ragazzi selvaggi”. La parola “selvaggi”, ci viene subito in mente quando pensiamo ai nostri fratelli di sangue del Nord Sardegna, i personaggi di questo nostro viaggio. Da quando abbiamo iniziato a surfare sono sempre stati lì, al nostro fianco, ad ogni avventura vissuta in Sardegna, durante contest e surf trip lungo la costa nord di questa isola che ci fa sempre sognare. Non pensiate che per selvaggi intendiamo dei feroci aborigeni taglia teste cannibali, anzi, l’accoglienza che riescono a darci è sempre una delle più calorose. Compagni di viaggio ideali, sanno quando e come muoversi per surfare le migliori onde e, una cosa che ci fa impazzire, non hanno fretta, non sono dei poveri affamati di onde come noi e molti surfers delle coste della Penisola o come dicono loro “del conti-

nente”. La parola “selvaggio” è legata ai luoghi incontaminati dove hanno la fortuna di surfare. Poche persone, onde di qualità e una natura sempre più rara nel Mediterraneo. Si muovono in branco, come i lupi, sono sempre in contatto telefonico come la coppia più innamorata di qualche telefilm e sanno apprezzare il surf puro più di ogni altro surfers Mediterraneo, perché i media, le aziende e tutto il resto non sono così presenti come in altre regioni Italiane influenzando e modificando i loro rapporti. Qualche volta, si lamentano di questa mancanza, ma a nostro avviso è un bene per loro, poiché riescono ancora ad apprezzare questo sport come dovrebbero viverlo tutti, immersi nel mare, con il vento, il sole, le spiagge, gli amici e la natura da far da contorno, senza troppi loghi sulle tavole e troppi fotografi pronti a scannarsi per lo scatto del giorno.

Wild word comes in to our mind when we think about our blood brothers from North Sardinia, the characters of this trip. Since the moment that we began to surf, they where there, on our side, in every adventure lived in that place, during contest and surf trip to the North coast of this dreaming island. Same beginning always: the ferry ticket online, a usual phone call, a check to weather forecast, we just have to start the trip. Almost the same routine of any our travel, as well as your once, it’s always the same thing. What changes is the place, the weaves, the friends that are waiting for us at the destination, and the years surfing. You don’t have to figured out that we are talking about savage aborigines cuttin’ heads and cannibals, infact their welcome is always one of the warmest. Ideals traveling companions, they know ferfectly when and how going to surf the best waves and, something that makes us crazy, they don’t have hurry, the’re not hungry of waves like us and many other surfers from Peninsula’s coasts, or how they call “mainland”. The word “wild” is connect to

the uncontaminated places where they are lucky to surf. Few people, quality waves, and wild nature, actually something rare in the Mediteranean. They move in packs, as wolfs, they are always in phone contact like a couple of lovers from a tv series and they appreciate the real pure surf most of any other mediterranean surfer, cause media, companies, and the rest are not so present as in others italian regions influencing and changing their relationships. Sometimes they complain this missing, but for us it’s something good, couse they’re able to appreciate this sport, in the way that anybody would do, dive in the sea, with wind, with sun, the beaches, the friends and the surrounding nature, without many logos on the boards and without many photographers ready to catch the shoot of the day.

Era qualche anno che non scendevamo in Sardegna ed è stato surreale vedere quanto nessuno di loro sia cambiato fisicamente, è come se il tempo si fosse fermato, è come se l’acqua del mare Sardo fosse una fonte dei eterna giovinezza per loro, a noi è sembrata sempre salata e limpida come ogni volta. Lillo, il cane di Paolo Rocca, nostro salvatore che ci ha accolto nella sua dimora, è l’eccezione che conferma la regola. Di solito si dice che il cane prende dal padrone, ma Lilluzzo, non ha preso niente da Paolino, è schizzato come una trottola, mentre il suo padrone è il tipo più rilassato che abbiamo mai conosciuto, basta solo sentirlo parlare. Giovanni Cossu ha sempre il pallino per le auto da corsa anche se le cose nella sua vita sono cambiate, ora ha un negozio di abbigliamento in centro a Sassari e deve far tornare i conti tutti i mesi, ma la sua passione per le onde e la musica è ancora forte e presente. Antonio Muglia forse è quello che ci ha dato più l’impressio-

ne di un padre di famiglia che tiene a bada i figli nel caos più totale, naturalmente i figli sono i suoi compagni di avventure, e giustamente dedica il tempo al surf e alla fotografia solo quando le condizioni sono buone, è sempre stato un buon intenditore. Davide Dettori è sempre il solito, sorridente e a tratti pensieroso, non abbiamo mai capito cosa gli gira per la testa, di sicuro però quando entra in acqua si vede che dà il 100% e tutti i suoi pensieri svaniscono. Molti di voi, giovani surfers, probabilmente non conoscerete questi personaggi e questo poco conta, ma se volete scoprire meglio il loro surf e le loro avventure vi consigliamo di visitare le rispettive pagine Facebok, per tutto il resto le foto di questo servizio parlano da sole.

That’re few years tha we didn’t came to Sardinia, and it’s unreal to see how nobody of them changed physically, and how time stopped, it’s as if the Sardinian see is a fountain of eternal youth for them, it seemed for us just salted and clear as always. Lillo, Paolo Rocca’s dog, our saver, (the person the welcomed us in his home), is the exception that proves the rule. Usually the dog is like the owner, but Lilluzzo is not much like Paolino, he is exagitated like a top, instead his owner is the quitest person that we’re ever meet, you just hear him talk! Giovanni Cossu has always had the passion for racing cars, even if things has been changed in his life, actually he has a shop in Sassari city center and he has to make ends meet every month, but his passion for waves and music is still strong inside him. Antonio Muglia is probabily the person that seems to us much a family father that has to take care of the cildren in chaos situations, obviously his children are his adventure companions, and of course he

usually spend his time in surf and photography when the conditions are good, he has always been a good connoisseur. Davide Dettori is always the same person, smiling and thoughtful, we’ve never understand what he has in his head, but for sure when he surfs he gives the 100% and all these thinkings disappear. n Italia il surf si è diffuso ed è praticato lungo tutte le coste e isole. Una di queste isole, la Sicilia, è un focolare di surfisti nazionali che in questi anni, lontano dai riflettori del panorama Mediterraneo, è cresciuto dando vita a una realtà solida con personaggi pronti a mettersi in gioco per promuovere questo sport e fare della propria passione uno stile di vita. Uno di questi personaggi di cui vogliamo parlarvi è Andrea Pizzo, surfer di Palermo nato nel 1986, e dopo oltre 10 anni dopo una serie di viaggi tra Indonesia, Fuerteventura, Australia, Nuova Zelanda e altro ancora, ha deciso che il mare e le onde sono la strada per il raggiungimento della sua felicità. S.C: Da dove nasce la tua passione per il surf? Raccontaci come è iniziato tutto e chi ti ha influenzato in particolare modo: A.P: il mio primo approccio con gli sport acquatici è stato quello con il windsurf quando avevo 15 anni, ma dopo poco tempo la mia attenzione si è spostata sul surf da onda, non solo perché mi affascinava di più, ma anche per ragioni di comodità. Infatti potevo finalmente andare a mare anche con il motorino. Tutto è iniziato quando durante le mie giornate estive al mare, ad Isola Delle Femmine, scoprii che anche in Sicilia si potesse praticare quello strano sport che fino a quel giorno avevo visto soltanto nei più celebri telefilm americani. Non ho fatto trascorrere molto tempo prima di decidere che anche io volevo unirmi a quella piccola e strana tribù che popolava la spiaggia non appena arrivassero le prime schiume. Anche io volevo essere uno di loro! E’ stato così che ho fatto amicizia con alcuni di loro, i quali non esitarono a darmi il benvenuto ed a spiegarmi cosa realmente significasse praticare questo sport. Posso dire che è stato così che la mia vita è cambiata! S.C: Shortboards, Longboards, Retrò, Bodyboard?

A.P: Shortboard, anche se recentemente sto utilizzando un Mini Simmons fatto da uno shaper locale che mi permette di fare surf anche quando le condizioni non sono eccezionali, come purtroppo spesso accade nel Mediterraneo. Inoltre ho così l’opportunità di surfare su tavole con shape diversi, penso sia un ottimo esercizio per migliorare il proprio stile. S.C: Miglior tavola utilizzata? A.P: In dieci anni ho cambiato diverse tavole. Non ne ho una preferita, ma dopo averne usate di tutti i tipi e colori, oggi, grazie all’esperienza acquisita e al consiglio di qualche shaper incontrato in giro per il mondo, ho finalmente trovato il giusto quiver: 5.9 – 19 ½ - 2 ½ 5.10 – 19 – 2 ¼ 6.0 – 19 – 2 5/16 Mini Simmons 5.3 - 20 ¾ - 2 3/16 S.C: Come è visto il surf nel tuo paese? A.P: Nell’ultimo decennio, la scena e la cultura del surf sono sicuramente cambiate tantissimo, sia a Palermo che in tutta la Sicilia. Se prima eravamo visti come alieni, oggi sono tanti i curiosi e gli appassionati di questo sport. One of these islands, Sicily, is the focus of national surfers that in these years, far from Mediterranean panorama’s spotlights, it has grown, becoming a solid reality with people ready to get involved, to promote the sport and make their passion a way of life. One of these people that we want to tell about is Andrea Pizzo, Palermo’s surfer , he was born in 1986, and after 10 years of voyages to Indonesia, Fuerteventura, Australia, New Zealand and so on, he decided that sea and waves are the way to achieve his happiness. S.C: Where your passion for surf come from? Tell us how everything started and who influenced you in a particular way: A.P: My first approach with water sports was with windsurf when i was 15 years old, but after not so much time, my attention changed into surf, not only because it fascinated me more, but also because it was more comfortable. In fact i could go to beach by scooter. Everything started during my summer days, on The Ladies island, i discovered that in Sicily was possible to practice this strange sport that until that day, i just watched it on most famous american tv series. It did not pass much time

to first decide to join that little strange crew populating the beach when first foams came. I wanted to be one of them. Then a knew someone of them, and they didn’t hesitate to teach me what to practice surf really means. I can say that my life changed in this way! S.C: Shortboards, Longboards, Retro, Bodyboard? A.P: Shortboard, although recently i’m using a Mini Simmons made by a local shaper and it allows me to surf even when the conditions are not so good, as unfortunately happens often in Mediterranean. I’ve got also the opportunity to surf on boards with different shapes, i think it’s a excellent exercise to improve my style. S.C: Which is the best board that you ever used? A.P: In ten years i changed lots of boards. I haven’t a favorite one, but after using all kind and colors’s boards, today, for the experience gained and for the advice of some shaper met somewhere around the world, i finally founded the right quiver: 5.9 – 19 ½ - 2 ½ 5.10 – 19 – 2 ¼ 6.0 – 19 – 2 5/16 Mini Simmons 5.3 - 20 ¾ - 2 3/16 S.C: How did people see surf in your country? me grow up a lot and of course it allows me to surf in some of the most beautiful places in the world. Also i spent a wonderful year and half working in Fuerteventura as surf’s coach. S.C: How do you perceive surf in Mediterranean? A.P: Certainly Sicily, as a Mediterranean island, is a land full of waves, and the frequency doesn’t miss, specially in wintertime. Obviously Ocean is another story for sure, but also here, with a bit os sacrifice and experience, we can exploit the nice days that sea gives us. S.C: How do you see that lots of surf’s directors from the ocean are getting curious observing our sea and our waves? Nonostante questo, a Palermo c’è un’ importante “tribù surfistica” fatta da ragazzi con un’ immensa passione per questo sport e per tutto ciò che è ad esso collegato. S.C: Chi sono le persone più influenti nel surf Siciliano? Che rapporti hai con loro? A.P: Danilo La Mantia, Enrico Perricone e Roberto Romancino, oltre ad essere miei grandissimi amici, sono stati sicuramente i principali punti di riferimento per la mia crescita in questo sport. Infatti, nonostante la loro giovane età, possono essere considerati, insieme ad un altro pugno di persone, i veri pionieri del surf non solo a Palermo ma in tutta la Sicilia. E’ con loro che ancora oggi mi organizzo per andare a mare, per programmare una scappata in oceano o più semplicemente per trarre il massimo da una giornata di surf organizzando una bella session di birra e video analisi. S.C: Best surf trip? A.P: Dopo essermi diplomato, decisi che era il momento di fare un’esperienza importante sia di vita che di surf. Decisi così di andare in solitaria in Australia, dove ho trascorso un anno della mia vita tra la Gold Coast e Sidney, pas-

A.P: Danilo La Mantia, Enrico Perricone and Roberto Romancino, great friends, they were for sure references for my growth in this sport. In fact, although their young age, they could be considered, together with few other people, surf’s pioneers not only in Palermo, but throughout Sicily. Today i still organize with them to surf, to plan an escape to the ocean or easily to get the maximum from a surf’s day organizing a nice bear session and a video analysis at the end. S.C: Best surf trip? A.P: After graduation, i decided that was the moment to do an important experience either of life and surf. I decided to go alone in Australia, where i spent a year of my life between Gold Coast and Sidney, passing by New Zealand (7 months), ending with 3 month in Bali. It has been an experience that makes

Ovviamente l’Oceano è tutta un’altra storia, ma anche da noi, con un po’ di sacrifici e di esperienza, riusciamo a sfruttare al massimo le belle giornate che il mare ci regala. S.C: Come vedi il fatto che molti registi di surf d’oltreoceano si stanno incuriosendo vedendo il nostro mare e le nostre onde? A.P: Sicuramente, come abbiamo visto recentemente alle Hawaii, l’affermazione a livello mondiale di atleti italiani del calibro di Leonardo Fioravanti e Roberto D’ Amico, ha incuriosito molti tra gli addetti al settore. Di onde buone lungo tutto lo stivale se ne possono incontrare parecchie, anche di ottima qualità, ed essendo queste sconosciute alla maggior parte

della popolazione surfistica mondiale, non c’è niente di strano, se alcuni registi hanno deciso di esplorare le nostre splendide coste. S.C: Se tu avessi la possibilità di scegliere la tua vita, cosa sarebbe meglio per te? A.P: Dopo molto tempo passato all’estero, ho comunque deciso che la mia base doveva essere la mia terra, la Sicilia, così ho deciso di sfruttare una delle risorse più importanti, il mare, lavorando nel mondo della nautica. In questo modo, nei mesi invernali riesco a ritagliare un po’ di tempo per viaggiare. Questo è il meglio per la mia vita.

S.C: If you have the opportunity to choose your life, what would be better for you? A.P: After spender lots of time abroad, i decided anyway that my base would be my land, Sicily, then i decide to take advantage from one of the most important resource, sea, working in nautical world. In this way, during wintertime, i can take a little bit of time to travel. This is the best for my life.

embra che tutto, o quasi, si sia detto o fatto in materia di SURF, da quando James Cook, a metà del ‘700, lo vide praticare per la prima volta in Polinesia. Ma non è così: un fenomeno così vasto, profondo e trasversale, da sfiorare talvolta la “sacralità”, tale al punto che il solo definirlo sembra “blasfemia”, non può esaurirsi, può solo continuare a fare proseliti e ispirare artigiani di sogni quali Giuliano Daolio e Guglielmo Miola. Questi due artisti hanno voluto creare un laboratorio di idee e opere, chiamato “LIGHT BLUE FACTORY”, prodotto della loro intensa collaborazione e solida amicizia, ma soprattutto della condivisione di un fondamentale ideale ovvero trasmettere al pubblico il loro modo di sentire l’arte. Dalle loro opere infatti traspare la concezione di Arte quale libera forma di espressione, senza vincoli culturali o spazio – temporali, in modo che possa arrivare a tutti. Ma è proprio il mare il collante di tutto, e non importa se è l’Oceano o il mar Ligure, l’unica cosa che conta è che ci siano spiagge lunghe, belle onde e una mareggiata di Maestrale . Si è potuto prendere visione delle loro opere presso il “Single Classic Festival” (M. diPietrasanta), la “Paratissima” (Torino) e con la personale “Borderlinee” (Genova) e in un corto girato da Carlo Cassan in collaborazione con alcuni surfisti come Luca Corrado , Thomas Cravarezza , Zizzu ,... . E tutto inizia e finisce col surf, non solo uno sport, o una moda, ma una grande metafora della vita, che è la più grande fonte d’ispirazione per qualunque artista.

But the sea is just the glue of all and it doesn’t care if it is the Ocean or Liguria’s sea, and what is more it’s long seaside, nice waves and a Mistral’s seastorm. We could see their works at the “Single Classic Festival” (M. di Pietrasanta), at the “Paratissima” (Torino), at their show “Borderline” (Genova) and in a short film shot by Carlo Cassan, in collaboration with some surfers like Luca Corrado, Thomas Cravarezza, Zizzu; …… And all starts and ends with surfing, not only a sport, or fashion, but a big metaphor of life, which is the biggest source of inspiration for any artist.

l contrasto che si pone tra i due mondi, quello del free surf e le competizioni esiste da sempre e sta alla base di questo sport, ma le esperienze della mia vita mi hanno dimostrato che il collegamento è diviso da una linea sottile. Il surf è un concentrato di emozioni che ti trasportano in un mondo unico, quando lo osservi e quando lo pratichi, quando sei in gara o quando sei da solo in mezzo al mare. Viaggiando tra Francia e le Isole Canarie ho avuto la possibilità di assaporare per la prima volta questo contrasto. Durante il mio soggiorno in Francia ho vissuto per diversi giorni la pura competizione durante il Quiksilver Pro France, il confrontarsi con se stessi, onde sempre più grandi, luoghi sconosciuti o che non visiti da anni ti fanno crescere sempre di più. Mentre alle Canarie ho potuto assaporare la passione per questo sport e per i surf trip, lontano dalle line up affollate e dalla pressione delle competizioni. Alla fine di questo lungo viaggio mi sono reso conto che l’adrenalina che ti trasmette questo sport è una sensazione bellissima e noi ne siamo dei cacciatori, ci rende persino assuefatti dall’odore della paraffina e al sapore del sale; non ne puoi più fare a meno e riesci addirittura a trovare le differenze passando da un Oceano all’altro, riconoscendo i sapori della terra in cui ti trovi. Il surfista è portato a confrontarsi con tutto ciò che lo circonda, gare o onde solitarie per capire dove spostare ogni giorno il proprio limite. Ed è questo che vorrei fare per il resto della mia vita.

The experiences of my life have show me that the link is separated by a thin line. Surf is a concentration of emotions which transfers you to a unique world, when you watch it and practice it, when you are in a contest or alone in the middle of the ocean. Traveling between France and Canary Islands give me the chance to taste, for the first time, this contrast. During my France trip I’ve felt the pure competition, the Quiksilver Pro France. Bigger waves, unknown places or that you forgot, make you grow ups. While in the Canary Islands I could enjoy the real passion for surfing and for the surf trips. Far away from the

crowded line up and the stress of the competitions. At the end of this long travel I released that the adrenaline which this sport transmits into yourself is an unbelievable sensation; we are the adrenaline-hunters. It makes us even addict to the smell of the wax or the salt taste. You can’t miss it and you can even find the differences from one Ocean to the other. You can recognized the taste of the land where you are. The surfer always match with everything around him, contest or lonely waves, to understand who he can afford every single day. That’s what I would like to do for the rest of my life.

Colonna sonora di The JamBO sono le performance dei deejay e dei gruppi selezionati da Alessio Bertallot: star internazionali della dance elettronica alternativa del calibro di Major Lazer, Chase & Status, Zeds Dead, 2manydjs, Armand Van Helden, Dizzee Rascal, Riva Starr e Rudimental. Dal pomeriggio a notte tarda, ogni giorno sono in programma esibizioni musicali di altissimo livello con artisti internazionali che hanno scelto The JamBO come unica tappa in Italia.
