PROJECT 1 PROJECT 1 ONE ONE WORD WORD TWO TWO SIDES SIDES
This project allow us to examine a singular word two different ways (physical/emotional), also select imagery that can be read as differently (semiotic icon/index). “Death” is the word I choose for this project. The framework is suicide. On physical side, suicide is very serious problems, so I choose to stick with serifed typefaces. I thought that would be appropriate idea to indicate losing life, by treating the word “life” faded. As for emotional side, by having a woman expressing sad feeling imagery to dominant the word “scar”. The “scar” is free hand writing based on the look of a physical scar, which create a strong visual connection to the imagery.
THE REASONS PEOPLE DECIDED TAKE THEIR OWN Photographed By Simon Winchester
By Alex Lickerman M.D.
The one question everyone has asked without exception, that they ache to have answered more than any other, is simply: why? Why did their friend, child, parent, spouse, or sibling take their own life? 60
They’re psychotic. Malevolent inner voices often command self-destruction for unintelligible reasons. Psychosis is much harder to mask than depression, and is arguably even more tragic. The worldwide incidence of schizophrenia is 1% and often strikes otherwise healthy, high-performing individuals, whose lives, though manageable with medication, never fulfill their original promise. Schizophrenics are just as likely to talk freely about the voices commanding them to kill themselves as not, and also, in my experience, give honest answers about thoughts of suicide when asked directly. They’re impulsive. Often relate to drugs and alcohol, some people become maudlin and impulsively attempt to end their own lives. The remorse is often genuine, but whether or not they’ll ever attempt suicide again is unpredictable. They may try it again the very next time they become drunk or high.
They’re crying out for help, and don’t know how else to get it. These people don’t usually want to die but do want to alert those around them that something is seriously wrong. They often don’t believe they will die, frequently choosing methods they don’t think can kill them in order to strike out at someone who’s hurt them. They have a philosophical desire to die. The decision to commit suicide for some is based on a reasoned decision, often motivated by the presence of a painful terminal illness from which little to no hope of reprieve exists. They’ve made a mistake. This is a tragic phenomenon in which typically young people flirt with oxygen deprivation for the high it brings and simply go too far. The only defense against this, it seems to me, is education. The wounds suicide leaves in the lives of those left behind by it are often deep and long lasting. 61
THE
LEFT ON LOVED ONES
By Natasha Tracy
Photographed By Kat Smith
Suicide is devastating and the effects of suicide on family members and loved ones of the person who has died by suicide can be severe and far-reaching. Those left behind by suicide are often known as suicide survivors and while this is a very difficult position in which to find oneself, is it possible to heal and move forward?
62
Learning that a loved one has died by suicide can absolutely be traumatic. In addition to all the feelings that anyone would feel about the death of a loved one, when the death is a suicide, there are additional feelings like extreme guilt for not preventing the suicide, failure because a person they loved felt unloved and committed suicide, anger or resentment at the person who chose to take his or her own life, confusion and distress over unresolved issues (many of which often exist in families where one person has a mental illness, which is common in people who die by suicide). Unfortunately, friends and family of those who have committed suicide experience impacts on their own mental health. In a study, people who lost someone to suicide typically have higher rates of depression, physical problems and low income. Anxiety and divorce are very common effects. Another study showes the person who lost someone are at a significantly increased risk for committing suicide themselves.
When a person dies, societally, others generally offer empathy and compassion, but when a person dies by suicide, there is stigma around that death and people often treat the loved ones of the person who committed suicide differently. Loved ones can be very afraid to talk about the suicide for fear of judgement and condemnation—being blamed for the suicide of their family member or friend. Because of this, one effect of suicide on family and friends can be extreme isolation. When sadness comes upon us suddenly during the day, there may be some subconscious reason for that. When you meet person who is sad, you probably respond with a sad facial expression and supportive words. When you know people or animals are suffering through no fault of their own — whether in your own community or in other parts of the world — you may experience feelings of helplessness, distress and a sense of identification with the victims that leave you with a residual type of sadness. 63

VISUAL LITERACY PROJECT THREE
SURIYA XIAOHERETI 03605924
This project is trying to educate us to use different elements to chart a passage of “times” based on an interesting story we could think of. Then by creating an artifact that could engaging with the story itself, of course the point would be leveraging a vernacular to help to carry the idea. My choice of story is Jessica cheating on her driver license written exam. I’m measuring this entire exam taking period by her mood level, scratching her head, looking at her phone, and surrounding noise level, etc. As for artifact I made a learning permit, which she gets right after she pass the exam.
