BRAND DESCRIPTION Revlon is 87 years old this year. To understand it is to go back to the founder Charles Revson because the way he founded the position and the brand is what gives it the point of view and the stature it has today. Revlon is an American cosmetics, skincare and fragrance company. The Charles and Joseph Revson brothers, with the help of chemist Charles Lachman, created the world’s first rich, glossy opaque nail enamel. The name Revlon was created with the Revson brothers surname by replacing the S for an L in honor of Charles Lachman’s involvement. From its inception, Revlon and Charles Revson encouraged women to express their fabulous femininity. It wasn’t built out of science or a particular kind of woman or look. It was built on the idea that women needed to express themselves. Revlon’s not only known for featuring models for wide range of age, but also known for making a significant impact by casting the first plus-sized model and first black model during 1992 to land a major cosmetics contract.

The one segment we know Revlon appeals to the most is women we call colorful and sophisticated. They’re the largest and the most underserved segment. Women tend to express themselves more, so they wear more makeup in more circumstances and therefore are the least satisfied. What women want is to feel confident, to express and explore themselves. They need to discover their inner beauty, to enjoy their grace inside out. That’s why the new Revlon will continue to offer women more opportunities and connections to build confidence to help them express themselves in every aspect.

BRAND MISSION New Revlon reflects that inner and outer beauty can be discovered in the rich diversity of the world. Women can embrace their self-confidence to explore beauty in positive and enterprising ways.

The logo idea is to convey women embracing their self-confidence to explore their beauty with positive and enterprising ways. LOGO ICON The initial design of R was based on the idea of expressing the confident side of women. So I used the capital R to make it appear stronger. I purposely designed the left side of the stroke to be thick and bold. And adding a crown on top of it also came from the idea of being confident.

WORDMARK The wordmark is modified from century schoolbook typeface. The serifed typeface represents well the feminine side of women.

BLACK AND WHITE LOGO When the use of a full-color logo is not possible, the logo should be presented in black or white. The black version should be used when the background will be white. If the background color is black or 2 signature colors the logo should be presented in white or reversed one of the signature colors on the solid color background (like below). A full circle format is preferred and should be used whenever possible.

LOGO ANATOMY LOGO ICON I created a thick and sharp stroke on the left side of the initial “R” to represent the confident and bold side of the women. I extended the same weight to the crown on top of the left side of the thick stroke. The right side of the “R” is designed to be three times more full, and the stroke appears smooth and soft which representing the famine side of women.

WORDMARK The logotype is taking a similar visual system from the iconic logo. It is modified based on the serifed typeface Century Schoolbook.

CLEAR SPACE Always position the logo for maximum impact and give it plenty of room to breathe. This will help to ensure the logo’s visibility and legibility. The minimum clear space for the Revlon logo is defined as the height of the block X.

COLOR USAGE GUIDELINES A distinctive color palette helps make a brand memorable while communicating key attributes. The bold and energetic yellow part of the crown does more than represent authority—it helps deliver a message that the Revlon is a dynamic organization that helps women become successful. The use of brown presents the skin color represents the diversity. These two signature colors, together with the secondary colors of the Revlon palette, combine to create a vibrant and innovative feel that will be easily recognizable as Revlon.

SIGNATURE COLORS Revlon’s brown and gold are the “signature colors” of the brand and form the foundation of the brand palette. When a full-color piece is produced these two colors should always be included in the overall design.

SECONDARY COLORS The secondary color palette consists of additional colors that may be used, but only in addition to one or more signature colors. Secondary palette colors are meant to give design flexibility when use of a lighter color is needed for type readability or as a design accent.

INCORRECT USAGE Revlon’s logo should always appear on a white background if possible. When this is not possible, the background should be clean, clear, and solid (void of any patterns and variations of color). However, when necessary, the background image may be altered to make the logo more visible. Never stretch or compress the logo in any way as this distorts the artwork and is no longer a true representation of Revlon. The logo must not be altered. The following are some examples of how the logo may not be used. Examples of unacceptable use of the mark include using the wrong colors, stacking incorrectly, and using the logos to create a pattern.

TYPOGRAPHIC STYLE

BASKERVILLE IS USED FOR HEADING, SUBHEAD, AND CAPTION. Baskerville was designed by John Baskerville in 1757 in England. It is classified as a transitional typeface, and its style is stepping stone between old style typefaces and modern typefaces. Its transitional style has a clean look to it that has a bit of old-style flair; that is where the font’s personality lies. It contains a higher contrast between thick and thin strokes, sharpening serifs, and shifting the axis of round letters to be more vertical.

UNIVERS IS USED FOR BODY COPY AND SMALL TYPE. Univers typeface is designed by Adrian Frutiger and released by his employer Deberny & Peignot in 1957. It’s classified as a neo-grotesque sans-serif. Univers was one of the first typeface families to fulfill the idea that a typeface should form a family of consistent, related designs. Univers generally has quite a wide spacing between letters, and its low x-height gives it a more lowslung, which gained its great popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, many corporations adopted it for usage.
