A warm welcome to the latest issue of Surrey Golf. I can’t believe it’s April already! Where has the year gone? It’s been quiet on the courses over the last few months, but as the long winter leaves us and the weather improves, everyone is starting to get back into action and looking forward to new challenges ahead. The winter leagues are coming to a close and the summer season is kicking off! We have another packed issue with all the latest county news. Our spotlight is on Surbiton Golf Club – an ‘oasis’ in the suburbs. Simon Bates helps you build a better swing and we also catch up with Scott Graham, Pro at Purley Downs Golf Club. Lauren Blease is back with her round-up on a PGA residential week. If you fancy a change of scene then turn to page 32 to see the great courses that Norfolk has to offer and on page 40 we offer a choice of over 100 world-class courses with guaranteed sunshine in Andalucia. And, don’t forget to enter our competitions on page 52. We would like to offer a fond farewell to Golf Shop Croydon. It was the first golf shop in the south of England, opening in May 1968 and has been run by a PGA Pro. Sadly, it will be closing down on the 13th April. Good luck for the future to owner Barry! If you are planning a corporate, charity or special event this season then why not add a little extra with David Edwards Trick Golf Show. David is a former European Tour Player and regarded as No.1 in golfing entertainment. He will create the WOW factor for your event with his amazing show and wicked sense of humour with his on-course video commentary. Visit www.david-edwards.co.uk

RYE’S DYNAMIC DUO CLAIM FIRST TEAMWORK TROPHY Rye come top of the class in new PGA Professional & Secretary Challenge

R

ye’s top team of Club Secretary Jimmy James and PGA Head Professional Matthew Holland shot a four-under-par 68* to win the Teamwork Trophy in the inaugural Surrey PGA Professional and Secretary Challenge, supported by MHS Group and ProAgenda.com. Played as a fourball better ball format, the star pairing took home the impressive new Teamwork Trophy. James, who’s only been in post for five months, said: “This is a great idea and it’s created my first opportunity to play with Matthew, and develop our working relationship beyond the confines of the club.” Following a countback, the 68 of Tyrrells Wood’s GM Phil Worthington and PGA Head Professional Rob Humphrey edged out Fulwell’s Club Secretary Murray Cook and PGA Head Professional Nigel Turner.

6

At the dinner, MHS Group’s CEO Ed Beale presented bottles of champagne to the top three pairs and the Teamwork Trophy to the winners. He added that both he and his operations director Tony Jones not only enjoyed playing against the Kingswood team of Secretary Mark Stewart and PGA Head Professional Ian Golding, but were delighted to support an event that helped improve golf club management. The event is the brainchild of Woodcote Park’s PGA Head Professional and Captain of The PGA in Surrey, Wraith Grant, and General Manager, Adrian Dawson. As Grant explained: “Adrian and I have long worked together to improve and drive our club forwards, and the benefits to the membership numbers and bottom line are clear for all to see.” He continued: “Playing nine holes regularly gave us time to chat about

things we were concerned about in an unformal and unstructured way, and helped us work with each other more effectively.” Dawson added: “But while it’s been obvious to us, it’s not so at all golf clubs. Wraith’s idea for this event aimed is getting the two key people at any golf club together, and the day’s been a tremendous success.” He continued: “There’s been a lot of encouragement from our respective colleagues in the business, and we’re delighted that club software developer MHS Group, online lesson booking app providerProAgenda. com, and main sponsor of The PGA in Surrey, Brand Fusion, all wanted to show their support for our concept, and that they’ve expressed their enthusiasm to do this again next year.” *https://pgagbi.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/pgagbi17/ event/pgagbi17540/contest/4/leaderboard.htm

SAVILL OUTSHINES THE REST Tandridge assistant’s 13-under-par total dominates the 10th Sunshine Pro-Am week

T

andridge’s Louis Savill has cruised to victory in The Sunshine Pro-Am in Portugal, shooting rounds of 70, 66 and 67 for a total of 203 to win by seven strokes. Taking the top prize of £1,100, Savill’s 13-under-par performance blew away the rest of the field, with early leader Ricky Pharo from Royal Mid-Surrey left trailing in second spot on 210 for a handy £850, and Litlestone’s Charlie Wilson turning in a total of 211 for £800. In the first round at Laranjal, while Savill’s golf through the green was in top gear the speed and slopes of the greens left him struggling for a card of four-over 76. But even though Pharo had opened with a 67, needing three cards out of five meant Savill could ignore his score and start afresh the next day. After fixing his putting over 30 minutes on Monte Rei’s putting green, Savill charged around the course

8

he considered the most difficult thanks to its fearsome rough, for a two-underpar 70. The next day he followed that with what he considered his best round, a spectacular six-under-par 66 at Quinta South. As Savill put it: “I missed the first two greens, but shot the rest in regulation and put my wedges close to set up the birdies. I didn’t go defensive but kept pressing and stayed aggressive to the end.” Now well in front with one more score to make, it was back to Laranjal to post a score Savill now knew he could deliver, shooing a fabulous five-underpar 67 for a winning total of 13-underpar 203. For Savill, the 10th Anniversary lunch at Julia’s Beach Bar on the day before the fourth round was another highlight of the week, while the Pro-Am raised over £8,500 for Demelza House, the

Kent based hospice charity for seriously ill children. The man behind the Pro-Am, Tandridge’s PGA Head Professional Chris Evans said: “The tenth Sunshine Pro-Am was a huge success, with 26 teams of PGA Professionals and amateurs playing three terrific courses in top condition, with each day blessed with warm and sunny weather.” Evans continued: “We’ve now raised over £60,000 for Demelza House, an achievement we can all be proud of, and much of the success of the week is down to the excellent event organisation from start to finish – that’s largely down to The PGA in England (South)’s excellent staff.” Savill backed up Evans’ comments, saying: “It’s a phenomenal week from the moment we touch down to the Gala dinner, and we’re all planning to be back for next year’s Sunshine Pro-Am.”

JUNIOR NEWS

CRANLEIGH JUNIORS BACK IN BUSINESS Cranleigh Golf & Country Club’s junior golf team has blazed back to competitive action after more than a decade away.

A

fter several years of inactivity because of a lack of junior golfers, the quartet of keen youngsters from the Surrey club got their first taste of battle against neighbours Bramley and came away with a creditable draw. The team members, included junior captain Leo Wilson (14), James Carlisle (13), James Marriott (10) and Josh Davies (10), who then turned in a gutsy display to come away from the fixture unbeaten. With their handicaps ranging from 28 to 17, it bodes well for future fixtures as the club develops a more extensive junior schedule and continues to attract more youngsters with a Junior Academy. Rita Elliott, junior organiser, said: “Back in the 1990s, we had a group of juniors who did very well and some of them went on to turn professional. Unfortunately,

there were no other youngsters at the time to follow on as the next crop of junior golfers and the section faltered. “This group we have now is so enthusiastic and we are pushing them as much as we can. We have 19 junior golfers with handicaps, which is great progress considering we only had three 18 months ago. “Hopefully, we will get a few more interested, especially with the new Academy and we are in the process of organising more matches. “But it’s great to have a team representing the club again and it’s a positive sign for the future of the club.” The Junior Academy includes a course of lessons during term time, costing just £7.50 per week and a junior membership is just £22 per month.

JUNIOR NEWS

SURREY COME SECOND IN THE FRIENDSHIP TROPHY Each year Surrey juniors take part in the Friendship Trophy which includes teams from France, Germany and Spain and is supported by the European Tour and Ladies European Tour.

The team: Martha Lewis (Captain), Ellie Lace, Angus Flanagan, Harvey Byers, Alfie Fox and Harry Plowman-Ollington

T

he competition is a 36 hole strokeplay event with teams of six players from each region (Catalunya, Midi-Pyrenees and Nordrhein Westfalen). The standard of golf is very high. Each team included two girls and four boys and all regions had international players. Surrey had three international players in the team – Martha Lewis, Angus Flanagan and Harvey Byers. Four scores count out of the six players on each of the two rounds. This year was hosted by Catalunya at Real Club de Golf El Prat – a fantastic course just outside Barcelona that has previously hosted the Spanish Open. Surrey played great golf over the two days, but Spain were very strong and

10

won by a small margin of nine shots. Catalunya scored 589 for the eight qualifying rounds – an average of 74.75 against a par of 72 on a very difficult course played in windy conditions. Surrey’s score was 598 – an average of 74.75, with Midi Pyrenees in third place and Nordrhein Westfalen fourth.

It was a great experience for the players and a shame Surrey could not win, but we have won the event for the last three years! We did have the best individual scores over the weekend for the boys and girls with Martha Lewis (76 and 78) and Alfie Fox (70 and 72).

SURREY U14 SQUAD ENJOY A WINTER TRAINING BREAK IN SPAIN

Twelve of the County U14 squad enjoyed a winter training break at the around the course and team work. The trip was part of the county’s Mar Menor Golf Resort in Spain, over the February half-term week.

L

ed by County Coaches Matt Antell and Ben Clayton, and supported by the U14 Manager Brian Woodham and U13/12 Manager, Peter Millham, the boys were able to develop their golf in some fantastic conditions. The Mar Menor Resort has excellent training facilities, along with an

undulating 18 hole course which was a great challenge for the squad. The three days were packed with morning training sessions with coaches, followed by an 18 hole competition in the afternoon, with the format for each round being changed daily to test the boys thought process

continued drive to develop golf at the U14 level, an age group that has consistently performed well over previous years, and produced some outstanding young golfers. Given the huge success and enjoyment by all, the trip will definitely be repeated next year and maybe rolled out to other age groups too.

JUNIORS TAKE ON LADIES AS A PRE-SEASON WARM UP MATCH

A

s a warm up match for both groups the juniors and ladies played an eight-a-side match at the RAC on Saturday 25th February. Both sides picked strong teams to take part and it proved very beneficial for all. The matches were close but the Boys managed to win all matches – the score does not reflect how competitive and close it was. Jocelyn Alford was outstanding with five birdies in her round. Well done to all involved.

The Boys: Alfie Fox (Captain), Harry Plowman-Ollington, Enrique Dimayuga, Callum Denham, Sam Barthram, Sam Storey, Aadam Syed and Charlie Crockett. The Ladies: Tana Churchill, SJ Dalgliesh, Jo Stocks, Jocelyn Alford, Katie Fewster, Ellie Lace, Amber Chana and Lauren Gooding.

JUNIOR NEWS

Enrique Dimayuga ONE TO WATCH... When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration?

The feeling of finally getting something that eluded me for so long felt really good.

I started playing golf at the age of five, my dad introduced it to me. My parents are my inspiration to keep going and they work hard to support me.

Are there specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have?

Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream four-ball?

I continuously work hard on all aspects of my game – skill, mental and physical. I do not want to leave anything behind. I use golf data lab to monitor my results, and if there is a drop in a particular area I can see that in my statistics and find the cause of the poor performance.

My favourite player is Jason Day. I love watching him play because of his allround game. My dream four-ball would be Tiger Woods, Bill Murray and Gary Player. 2016 was a great year for you, what were your highlights? I won six championships and finished 2nd, 3rd, 6th in others both county, regional and national. I think they are all equally special, but winning the Surrey U15 Championship would be the one that stood out. It might not be the biggest one, but it was my first county title and it was a dramatic finish. After playing poorly in the 1st round, I was four shots back but in the second round I birdied the last two holes to win by one.

What are your goals for 2017 and beyond? For 2017 my goal is to win the big national events like the McGregor, Carris, Surrey Amateur, Fairhaven and Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters. For the future I am aiming to get strong academic results so, with my golf, I have a greater chance in getting a place at an American university, which could help me in order to get a PGA Tour Card. What advice would you give young players just starting on their journey in golf? Play golf with passion and some meaning. If you want to do well you need to have the desire. You should also accept failures and see them as something to learn from. You learn more from failures then you do from winning. Finally, what is your favourite football team?

PLAYER PROFILE Member at: Cuddington Golf Club Current handicap: 1 Enrique represents Surrey at a Junior and Senior level and in 2016 managed to rack up some amazing achievements: • He made the cut and finished 47th at the McGregor • Tied 3rd at the Douglas Johns Trophy • Represented England U18 Schools vs Scotland Schools at Fairhaven. • Won the Surrey U15 County Championship • Won the South of England U18 Schools Championship • Won the Surrey U18 Schools Championship • Came 3rd at South England Boys Open U16 and 14th in the U18 category • Came 2nd at Roehampton Invitational Junior Masters • Won the Surrey Captains trophy • Won the U18 Junior Team Golf Individual England Final • He came 6th in the English Schools Final We won the Junior and Men’s Club Championship at Cuddington

sk any golfer to give you their wish list of courses and it is sure to include courses like Pebble Beach, Sawgrass, Sunningdale, and Open Championship venues like Carnoustie and Royal Birkdale. In 2017 competitors on the European Amateur Golf Tour (EAGT) will get the opportunity to play all these great courses and many other courses in the UK Top 100. In fact, the 2017 EAGT schedule will feature 16 courses in the World Top 100 courses, including Whistling Straits, host venue for the 2020 Ryder Cup and Erin Hills which is hosting

the US Open in June this year. The Tour will also visit some of the most exclusive courses in Europe like Les Bordes in France. The EAGT has been running since 1997 and is now established as the most popular amateur golf tour in Europe and possibly the world. The great strength of the Tour is the quality of the courses played and the fact that each event is part of a season long order of merit. Events vary from one day events featuring 18 or 36 holes in the UK to seven night long-haul events during the British winter so golfers can follow the sun!

EASY TO ENTER How often have you watched an event on TV like the upcoming TPC at Sawgrass and said to your friends “let’s get a trip organised” only for it never to happen? It couldn’t be easier to book an event on the EAGT just a couple of clicks on the website or a phone call and your trip of a lifetime will be a reality. OPEN TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS The EAGT is open to all golf club members, male and female who have an Active CONGU handicap. Competitors can choose how many events they wish to play. Some people

LESS GIVES MORE By Simon Bates

A more compact swing makes it much easier to return the club back to impact squarely. If we observe many of the players on the European Tour and PGA Tour, they are swinging the club shorter and keeping their weight more central rather than applying a lateral weight shift on to the back heel.

24

Mitch Gunn/Shutterstock.com

We often come across players who have spent multiple range sessions trying to maximise their distance by widening and lengthening their backswing length and arc and then attempting to unwind the whole sequence in the blink of an eye. Sadly, most players adjusting these positions and moves, don’t see any noticeable improvements because of the increased number of miss-hits.

his modern take on the golf swing allows them to manage their backswing moves, then as they initiate the downswing, they can create a downward pressure into the floor. This pressure is used to perform an extremely dynamic downward spring move (a squat). Finished off with a tremendous unwinding of the body, the arms and hands simply deliver a square clubface into and through the impact area. This simple take on the golf swing is why we’re seeing an increase in first time winners on tour, players have a better understanding of their swings, simplifying their moves, reducing the activity of the club face through impact. In my opinion, that’s why we are seeing a regular change at the top of the standings with different world number 1’s through the season. Even though I will be referring to this compact swing as the ‘modern’ swing, the actual idea of being compact and consistent has been

around for many years. Nick Faldo’s take on a simple body turn move in his backswing helped him feel more consistent.

HOW DO WE ACHIEVE THIS? It all starts by obtaining a good ‘athletic’ posture with your hands on the opposite shoulders, with feet grounded to the floor, make a smooth controlled shoulder rotation to a short compact backswing position. As you have removed all the unwanted arm lift this backswing move will be quite short and tight. This drill will help you to feel compact with a strong base. We can use this drill daily to focus on how our body should be moving in the golf swing. Get the body moving with this ‘posture – pivot’ drill (pics 1 & 2). The arms now have some freedom as they are less connected to your chest, retain some of the connection by feeling a slight pinching of rib cage with the inside of your biceps. This

My ultimate goal was to build a swing that I could rely on under pressure, and by simplifying this early move I firmly believe that you can similarly enjoy a more repeating swing – one that rewards you with noticeably more solid and consistent ball striking. Turn & hinge that’s my key thought as I prepare to move, and it’s one that can help you to enjoy making a better swing more often Nick Faldo

will ensure the arms don’t take over in the early part of the backswing. Try this drill with your hands together in your usual grip position (pics 3 & 4). As the chest begins to turn, allow your right hip (right handed) to rotate around you so your weight will gradually move from a centred position to your back foot, then to the inside of your front foot and front knee. This is a ‘spiral’ weight shift and the center of your chest will still be

26

located within the width of the stance. Remember to allow the right hip to rotate in the takeaway, it’s not the main source of movement but we are simply encouraging it to follow the chest rotation. This is a more ‘modern’ take on weight transfer. Previously, we may have been taught to move weight back on to our right heel, with tension through our right side. This technique still applies in many golf swings today but to keep things simple and compact, we are not allowing this

move to happen on this occasion. Starting with a central weight location then create a ‘diagonal’ body shape at the top of the swing, with reduced resistance/tension in the right hip or knee (pics 5 & 6). This more modern, compact swing relies on body power rather than hand speed, the hands simply help set a strong and square clubface. We need to take finger bias grip that shows three knuckles on your top hand at set up. We are trying to achieve a

This will immobilise the hands, appearing that the wrists have done less, this is far from the truth though. The hands are working hard to retain this position rather than having the freedom to hinge and cup the left wrist resulting in an ‘open’ club face.  Achieving a strong, balanced position at the top of the backswing with the left wrist securing a wellpositioned club face we can unwind into impact. Remember the hands are not your power source; they simply hold their position until your body has begun to unwind. By initiating your downswing from the floor up and not the hands, the plane of the swing will shallow and your balance point, moving onto the middle of your front foot. Then unwind the body and let the

club swing into and through impact with passive hand action. Downswing swing sequence – move onto left foot with hands and unwind the left side into impact (pics 10, 11, 12 & 13). Obviously, youth and flexibility will affect the dynamics of the swing, but all positions/moves can be achieved by golfers of all ages, ability and fitness level. It’s just a case of keeping it simple, compact and achieving a centred strike.

What course is on your bucket list that you have not played yet?

What has been your most career defining shot so far?

Augusta, went and watched the Masters a couple of years ago to celebrate my 40th, amazing place.

I can still remember my approach shot into the 18th hole at Alva golf club on my way to winning my first county boys championship, golf was so simple back then.

What have been the highlights and low points of your career? Any victory is a highlight, last year I won the Guildford Alliance 36 hole Championship, there is some great players names on that Trophy.

CLUBS IN THE BAG: Callaway Epic Driver and 3 wood, Apex irons 3-9, Macdaddy Forged Wedges and Odyssey od works number 7 putter

What’s your favourite on course energy snack / drink?

FAVOURITE CLUB IN THE BAG: Driver

What advice would you give to the Surrey youngsters wanting to turn professional?

At what age did you start playing golf and which club did you start at?

Water. Which Surrey club has the best half way hut? Wentworth.

Do your PGA Training as soon as possible, so you always have that to fall back on, then give yourself a set amount of years and go and enjoy playing Tournament golf and see where it takes you.

What do you enjoy doing off the course? Family and friends time. Dream foursome (living)? Woods, McIlroy, and my dad who since moving down South when I was 19 I have not played enough with over the years. Dream foursome (living or dead)? Payne Stewart, Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer. If you could change one aspect or rule of golf, what would it be and why? Golf has to become quicker, slow play will kill the game. So I would start with the top guys on the TV and bring in much harsher penalties.

Started at the age of six years old at Alloa Golf Club in Central Scotland (Hidden Gem). Who was/is your biggest influence? My dad for his pure love for the game. Which is your favourite Surrey course (apart from the one you are resident at) and why? St Georges Hill, great setting and always in great condition. Which is your favourite course worldwide? Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, I played behind Tiger Woods and Hank Haney. Closer to home I love Monte Rie in Portugal.

GET INTO GOLF

PGA RESIDENTIAL

WEEK

with Lauren Blease

When I decided to stop playing tour golf I was very unsure of what I wanted to do with my career, I came up with lots of different ideas but nothing seemed right...

I

was very lucky that I was part of The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and they really helped me to figure out in which direction I wanted to go. I spent a lot of time going into schools giving ‘talks’ and trying to inspire children to take up sport, not only for health reasons but also for all benefits it can have for their studies and career. It was after this that I realised that golf and coaching golf is my passion! I started my PGA Qualification last year and recently attended my first PGA Residential Course at The Belfry in Sutton Coldfield. It seemed

30

a long time since university and it was daunting to go back to studying again! The PGA qualification includes custom fitting, coaching, retailing, customer service and sports science and junior development. It was certainly an intense week with a huge amount of information to take on board. There were 60 assistants on this particular course split up into four groups, each group working on different sections each day. It was good to stay in the same group throughout the course so we could get to know each other to discuss and

compare our first few months being a PGA Assistant. DAY 1: INTRODUCTION This was a very interesting day starting off with an introduction to the course and then a session with Jamie Edwards, a leading ‘mind coach’ who works with many elite athletes (including Gareth Bale). ‘Brain training’ is not new to top sports people, I have studied this when playing and do believe that this can hugely help the amateur golfer. I will eventually be using this to help

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

my teaching methods. The simplest techniques can make all the difference in someone’s game and it can often have more of an impact than practising your swing. DAY 2: CUSTOM FITTING DAY I’m not sure why I was nervous about this section, but it was probably because I don’t know much about custom fitting. It’s much easier being a golfer as someone else does all of this for you. Before I simply had to hit golf balls and look at the stats on the computer! However I really enjoyed this day and went away having learnt so much about building clubs and how to alter the loft and lies as well as doing a custom fitting session with someone.

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

DAY 3: BUSINESS SEMINAR This involved understanding how to run a successful golf business and all the skills that are required. This session was very interactive and we were split up into small groups to complete various activities. No matter what section of golf you end up in, business will always be a part of it so this session was particularly useful. DAY 4: SPORTS SCIENCE AND JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT I studied this at school so it was good to jog my memory! We gave a presentation in front of the class and tutor which should not have been daunting, but for some reason I was quite nervous. My room-mate and I had been practising our presentations all week, so hopefully it paid off! During this session we also learnt about junior development and the importance of making golf fun to keep juniors engaged and interested. DAY 5: COACHING This was the day that I was looking forward to the most and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I think that it is really

important to learn and understand about new coaching techniques and I tried to absorb as much information as possible to help make my lessons the best they can be and as enjoyable as they can be for everyone. We watched our tutor give a lesson to a beginner and I will definitely use some of his techniques in my future lessons. It was interesting to see how he engaged with the pupil and didn’t actually get them to hit balls until they had a basic understanding of what they were trying to achieve. The week was hugely enjoyable and a fantastic learning experience – it was great to meet other PGA pros who are starting out on this same journey and get their insights on the game and how the tutors see the game of golf progressing. The Belfry was a great place and I shall certainly return, but next time to play the course, it was very tempting looking at those gorgeous fairways every day!

MALONE GOLF CLUB Stunning parkland golf course located just 5 miles from Belfast city centre • Considered by many to be the best ‘old style’ parkland course in Northern Ireland • 27 hole facility with green fees to suit all budgets • Host venue of the Vagliano Trophies in 2015 and many other championships over the years • Mature 330 acre estate, with a magnificent 180 year old main clubhouse building

Finca Cortesín Golf Club

Finca Cortesín Golf Club

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

FINCA CORTESÍN GOLF CLUB was founded with the intention of becoming a reference in the golf world. The course measures almost 7000m from the black marker stakes, making it one of the longest in Europe. It is a par 72 course, with an average difficulty rating, although difficulty will increase if the back markers are used. The different teeing areas and the wide rolling fairways allow most players to reach the green easily. Harald Hurgan, the internationally renowned landscape architect, collaborated with Cabell Robinson, the course designer, on the surrounding landscaping. Together, the two designers have succeeded in preserving the natural features of the area, establishing a balance between natural grass, thicket and lawn. The excellent maintenance of the fairways and greens, and attention to every little detail, will make a round of golf at Finca Cortesin a challenging test of your ability whilst all the time surrounded by an aesthetically exceptional natural and unique environment. www.fincacortesin.com continued on page 42

OFF THE COURSE... ALHAMBRA

The Alhambra was a palace, a citadel, fortress, and the home of the Nasrid sultans, high government officials, servants of the court and elite soldiers (from the 13th to the 14th century). Today, the monument is divided into four main areas: the Palaces, the military zone or Alcazaba, the city or Medina and the agricultural estate of the Generalife. All of these areas are surrounded by woods, gardens and orchards. www.alhambra.org/en

REAL CLUB VALDERRAMA is located a few miles north of Gibraltar, it is approximately two hours drive from Cádiz and one and a half hours from Málaga. The Par 71 championship course measures 6356 metres from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course – nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision

for every shot. The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Sotogrande New. In 1981 its name was changed to Las Aves. Finally, Ortiz-Patiño renamed the course Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated. www.valderrama.com LA RESERVA DE SOTOGRAND was inaugurated autumn 2003 and is located in a beautiful part of the

heights of Sotogrande, characterised by native vegetation of Mediterranean pine, olive and cork trees. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson, the course is surrounded by two valleys. The layout includes four lakes, with water on six holes, though only coming into play on one. Constructed according to USGA norms, the greens can be characterised by their ample size and variety of form, the same as the bunkers. Based on the design of a typical Andalusian farmhouse, the clubhouse acts as the meeting point for members and friends. The building covers almost 6000 sq.m on the top of a hill from where you get great views of the Reserva de Sotogrande Golf Course. www.sotogrande.com

Caminito del Rey was opened to the public on the 28 March 2015 and is part of a spectacular natural beauty spot. It is breathtaking and attractive, although the path is more than just a walk in the hills. Encompassing a rocky plateau 1200m above sea level, the Gaitanes Gorge contains the one and only ‘King’s Walkway’, in El Chorro Natural Park which provides the perfect setting for exciting hiking experiences in unbelievable landscapes. www.caminitodelrey.info/en BOLONIA

Bolonia is just up the coast from Tarifa. Literally off the beaten track – it lies at the end of a no-through road – this town has everything: Roman ruins, hip juice bars and wooden beach restaurants (chiringuitos) serving fresh fish, and the crowning glory – a wide sweep of golden sand, backed by a grassy flower-covered bank, ending in a steep pine-forested dune.

DESERT SPRING located in the last ‘forgotten’ corner of the Mediterranean coast of south eastern Spain on a plateau overlooking the Almanzora Valley, with easy access from the international airports of Almería and Alicante, Desert Springs has constructed Europe’s first ever Arizona style desert golf course. Inspired by the famous desert courses of Arizona & California and designed by Peter McEvoy, The Indiana course is built to full USGA specifications. A spectacular example of man’s creativity in harmony with nature; its emerald green fairways are set amongst massive rocky outcrops, arroyos and dry rivers. Over 600,000 cacti and other desert plants grow progressively more dense and troubling the further your shot is off the fairway, culminating in the dreaded ‘spiked lies’ – the course is both demanding and exhilarating and offers a variety of shot making challenges to test the skill level of every player, from the beginner to professional. www.desertspringsresort.es MARBELLA GOLF COUNTRY CLUB was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Senior, and located just five minutes drive from Marbella city centre and provides one of the best and most challenging golfing experiences on the Costa Del Sol. The facilities of the magnificent clubhouse offer a stylish restaurant, conference rooms, pro-shop stocking all of the latest clothing ranges, a golf academy with an excellent putting green and three tennis courts. The surrounding hills, olive groves and

magnificent sea views provide a breath-taking backdrop. Opened in 1994 and occupying one of the largest remaining green areas on the Costa del Sol, the 6000 meter long 18-hole links course with a par of 72, has been imaginatively designed to respect the natural terrain. www.marbellagolf.com LA QUINTA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB is one of the busiest golf resorts on the Costa del Sol/Costa del Golf. It is situated on the road to Ronda, very close to Malaga and just opposite the Puerto Banús tourist resort. It was designed by two Spanish professional players, Antonio Garrido and Manuel Piñero. A comfortable and fun course which is suitable for players of all levels, with the difficulty lying in the uneven fairways and the deep bunkers. There is an 18-hole course and another of 9 holes which can be combined to suit the wishes of the player. Most tees are elevated affording excellent visibility and fairways widen to receive good tee shots, but beware of trees, water and large yet shallow fairway bunkers. More fearsome deeper bunkers lie in wait for stray approach shots. The long 15th, a dogleg left, is rated the most difficult hole. www.laquintagolf.com

A makeover for

Valderrama We caught up with Javier Reviriego, the CEO of Real Club Valderrama to find out how he has taken the golf course to even higher standards after finalising a large renovation project to up-grade the golf course. surrounding areas and finally the new practice facility that includes a Kyle Philips designed short game practice area and new target greens for the driving range. It sounds like the entire course has been improved?

H

ome to the Volvo Masters (198896 and 2002-2008), the Ryder Cup (1997), the World Golf Championships (1999-2000), the Andalucía Masters (2010-2011) and Open de España (2016), Valderrama already surpasses its reputation as Europe’s number one course. Why did you decide to undergo this project? Valderrama has always been known for the quality of its course and the level of maintenance. In order to compete with the best clubs and golf courses in the world, we have to provide the very best playing conditions for our members and guests. This is only achievable with a sound long term plan to constantly improve the facilities. This is the reason we decided to invest heavily on the course over the last five years.

46

What have been the main works carried out? We have undergone a complete renovation and revamping of the course, but I would certainly highlight five of them: New irrigation system, new tee bent grass tee boxes, rebuilding of all the bunkers on the course, re-construction of all the cart paths, renovation of all the greens and

Absolutely, this was the goal we set when we outlined the project. At first, it was difficult to understand for some of our regular visitors why we needed to invest on a great course. Time has proven that you can always get better and there are always ways to improve the experience on the golf course. We are proud of the up-grading and are very much looking forward to hosting the best players in the world for the Valderrama Masters that will take place the third week of October. After the investments made, how does the future look for Valderrama? Obviously, we will not be executing any more projects for some time. We are happy with the progress and we will work hard to maintain and improve our current playing conditions. Our idea is to get better every year and to achieve this we constantly benchmark against the best courses in the world. We are also committed to offering our visitors a great service experience to enjoy not only the golf course, but also our hospitality and the great gastronomy of our restaurants. PROBLEM SOLVED – HAPPY GOLFERS EVERYWHERE T

he great feeling of happiness is being returned to those golfers that have made the switch to the guaranteed shank proof hybrid irons from Heavenly Hybrid. And with sales up over 150% in 2016, it’s not just the golfers that are happy. 2016 was a fantastic year for us and things look as though they are going to be even better this year. So what has given Heavenly Hybrid unmatched growth in 2016? Golf is a game of problems, and from a manufacturers point of view we looked at how to fix those problems. Firstly we identified some issues that we wanted to solve, such as: • Shanking • Lack of distance and accuracy • Unable to lift the ball from the fairway • Improved short game consistency

Shanking – as we all know the shanks are a golfers worst nightmare. A shank is caused by the hosel of the club striking the ball, so by designing a hybrid head without a hosel we have made a club that is impossible to shank. Lack of distance – the hybrid design is more powerful than an iron, and after lots of tests we managed to design a head which not only was 100% shank proof, but was able to give the golfer extra yards. Unable to lift the ball from the fairway – the ease in which these hybrid irons pick the ball up from the fairway have a lot to do with the shaft design. Shafts have been designed We have had these shafts designed especially for us to work perfectly with our heads, to kick at the correct time giving you the perfect impact position. Improved short game – we tested

golfers chipping with our hybrid irons compared to their own clubs and the results were fantastic. It wasn’t how good the good chips were, it was how much better the bad chips were when using the hybrid irons, and remember – you are only as good as your bad shots! The answer to all of the above was the hybrid head design for all your irons, and gradually golfers are starting to realise this and those that have are seeing the benefits immediately.
