EDGA provides advice relating to golf for disabled players to the R&A, The International Golf Federation, The European Tour and The European Golf Association on golf for the disabled. Focusing on growing the game, EDGA has designed and implemented coach education programmes for delivery in rehabilitation centres, hospitals and golf clubs. All of these initiatives are available to the members of EDGA, as are protocols for tournament administration, definitions of impairment and other programmes which are available to grow the number of golfers with disability around the world. If your club would be interesting in hosting the event, please contact Caroline Hardy-Evans (Assistant County Secretary) at the Surrey office..

GIVE GOLF A GO! T

he Surrey Ladies County Golf Association (SLCGA) is urging women and girls to ‘Give Golf a Go’. The association is sponsoring a women and girls’ golf week at golf clubs across the County to encourage more women and girls to try golf and hopefully take up the sport. There will be events at 16 clubs in the county between 25th April and 1st May. Women and girls who sign up to ‘Give Golf a Go’ will take part in a group lesson with a PGA professional, during which they will be introduced to the basics of golf. They will also take a tour of the club and meet some of the members over refreshments. All equipment will be provided. Sue Wild, Surrey Ladies’ County

Captain said, “We want to see more women and girls on the golf course enjoying this great sport, which is not only great exercise but also fun and an excellent way to meet people. The pandemic has seen a surge of interest in golf but there are still many more men than women playing the sport. “We are trying to make golf more open and accessible for women and girls; we want to see many more get involved and experience golf. Hopefully, some of those that take part in our ‘women and girls’ golf week and do ‘Give Golf a Go’ will go on to take up the sport and join one of the many Surrey golf clubs.” The golf clubs hosting the taster days will offer participants incentives

to continue playing the game, such as a series of subsidised ‘Give Golf a Go’ lessons. ‘Give Golf a Go’ is one of the SLCGA’s initiatives designed to develop women’s and girls’ golf. The SLCGA signed the Women in Golf Charter, an R&A initiative to attract more women into golf, in June 2021. It is also working with the Golf Foundation on an introductory programme for primary school aged girls, which will be launched soon.

COUNTY JUNIORS ONE TO WATCH

WILL Mannering Early July 2019, I was made an Ambassador of Sunningdale Heath GC. It was and has been an honour. Playing in ‘the Open Access Masters’, an 18-hole tournament aimed to unite the stars of the European and Ladies European Tours. It was an honour to be invited and play in my first professional event and teeing up next to huge legends of the game. How often do you play/practice?

When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration? I picked up my first set of golf clubs when I was two-years-old. It was a plastic toy set and I used to go out on the back green with my dad and hit chip shots over the hill. At 4½, my dad would take me to the driving range with him. I had a few lessons with Tom Reid but it wasn’t until I was 9½ when I started golf and joined my first club, Farnham Sands in July 2018. My dad shared his passion for golf and was definitely the person who inspired me to start. Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream fourball? Rory McLlroy. I think he has the best swing on Tour. My dream fourball would have to include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, my dad and me! What have been your career highlights so far? Winning the Clutch Pro Tour Junior Championships Final at The Belfry. I played on the PGA National Course and up behind The British Challenge Tour players with the same course and pin conditions. 12

I practice three times a week and play in competitions at the weekend. I have a two hour lesson every month with my coach Tom Reid. I practice at home too, it’s important to keep swinging and always have a club in your hand. Is finding time to play whilst managing school / work etc difficult? Yes, very difficult, especially in the winter months when you lose the light after school, and I have exams. I have noticed over the last year that the amount of work required to keep on form has increased as my handicap has reduced. Are there specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have? I tend to work on areas of my game separately. I prefer to do most of my practice on the course in a real environment. No gimmies, play worse ball and play in all conditions. I like using PELZ for my short game. It’s a series of tests that allocate a handicap for your short game. It’s a good gauge and fun trying to improve and beat it. All my practice rounds I make notes and have just started using a webbased tool, Stroke Average which analyses

the data and provides feedback on areas to work on. What are your goals for 22 and beyond? My 2022 goals are to become a scratch player, place in the top 10 in the England Golf Reid Trophy, Midlands U16 Championship, and Faldo Series. What advice would you give to young players starting their journey in golf? Enjoy your golf, make lots of friends, work hard and don’t worry about the bad shots. Finally, what are your other interests when you are not playing golf? I compete in many other sports. Mainly football, rugby, basketball and athletics. I’m in the school teams and district squads. To relax, I sometimes just like to spend time with my mates, fishing, and family. SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

PSYCHOLOGY

STATE OF

MIND Surrey golfer and mental

coach, David MacKenzie, gives us his best mental tips to make the 2022 golf season your best yet.

J

ack Nicklaus once said that “golf is 90% mental and 10% luck”. If this is anywhere close to being true, why is it that so few golfers spend time training the mental game? Most golfers only train the technical and fail to take advantage of training their mental skills to help them perform better. Let’s take a look at some simple ways to change this:

PRACTICE YOUR PRE-SHOT ROUTINE Where you put your attention during those valuable seconds before you start your swing has a huge effect on how well you execute the shot. I often speak to golfers at driving ranges and ask them what they are working on. 99% of them will tell me that they are working on their swing, Hardly any will tell me that they are training their attention and working on skills such as visualisation, commitment or consistency of their preshot routine which is just as important.

HAVE AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE We all want to play well and shoot a good score. But the harder we try, the harder it becomes to do. In order to create the freedom needed for you to focus, relax and swing freely, you’ll have to find ways to take pressure away and shift your perspective. What do you value most about your next round? If

14

it’s only about shooting a good score, it will add pressure. A better goal for your rounds is to focus on gratitude and learning. Decide to appreciate everything the game gives you such as being outdoors, natural beauty, time with friends, a good walk, etc. If you can do this, you’ll benefit from the powerful emotion of gratitude which will improve your mood and make the inevitable misses easier to deal with.

CHOOSE YOUR RESPONSES Golf is never easy – we all hit bad shots – it’s how you respond to them makes all the difference. Do you ever think about your post-shot routine? Without it, you’ll be left to your reactions, which can trigger negative thoughts and lower confidence. Try smiling or counting to 10 to diffuse the feelings you have after a bad shot or 3 putt.

TRAIN FOR PRESSURE We all feel a higher state of arousal when we are playing, compared to practice. If we know this to be true, we should spend time getting ‘more comfortable being uncomfortable’. To do this, try ‘competitive practice’. Use your imagination to create challenging scenarios that you could be faced with in your rounds, like your first tee shot

and test the strength of your mental game. Play games that require you to beat a certain score or there is a consequence, just like there is on the course. By doing so, you’ll raise your heart rate and simulate the feelings you have on the course.

BECOME AN OPTIMIST Optimism is synonymous with mental toughness, which is the ability to be able to see positives and solutions for difficult situations. But this isn’t easy, as the mind tends to be naturally pessimistic. You can make optimism more of your default by journaling after your rounds. Spend 5-10 minutes to write down all the positives – your best shots and aspects of your game that were strong. Write down as many as you can think of. Then write down one thing you learned about yourself, that you will work on. Try these techniques to train your mental game this season and I’m confident you’ll shoot lower scores. David MacKenzie is a mental coach and resides in Washington DC, but is originally from Godalming, Surrey. You can find out more about him and his coaching at www.golfstateofmind.com

LOTTIE WOAD’S

REVIEW OF 2021 AND INTO 2022 2021 began with the country back in a COVID lockdown, with golf courses closed until late March. I was very fortunate, as a member of the England Girls Squad, to qualify for an exemption to be able to practice at a local facility. My club, Farnham, kindly agreed that I could use their range, so I was a solitary figure, practising hard on my own, for a few months. I’d like to thank FGC and England Golf for enabling me to do this, together with my sister Milly and my parents who picked up hundreds of balls every weekend, so that I had a supply for the following week! Happily, golf resumed in the Spring, but unfortunately overseas travel remained difficult, so planned trips to tournaments throughout Europe and England team matches, such as the European Championships and World Junior Girls in Canada were not

16

possible. It also meant that I, along with others from the UK, were unable to play any of the qualifying events for the Junior Solheim Cup, so for the first time, the European team did not have any players from GB and Ireland. However, a near full season of homebased tournaments went ahead, which was great after the limited schedule of 2020. I’ve picked out a few highlights: Farnham GC hosted the inaugural England U18 Championship, which had a field of 66 boys and 66 girls competing for a single prize. My club did a fantastic job hosting the championship, they’re a worthy finalist in the upcoming England Golf Awards for Tournament Venue of the Year. I opened with a pair of 68s to be the halfway leader. It was a great experience playing in the last group for the final two rounds on the Sunday, cheered by a

large gallery of members, but I eventually finished runner-up to Jenson Forrester. However, as leading girl I received an invite to play in a LET event, which is planned for early summer. I achieved my first National Women’s Open Championship when I won the Wales Ladies Open Strokeplay at Newport GC. It was great to get my name on the trophy alongside some of the famous past winners, such as Dame Laura Davies, who triumphed in 1984! I also won four prestigious 36 hole women’s amateur tournaments staged on some brilliant courses; The Critchley Salver at Sunningdale, The Bridget Jackson Bowl at Handsworth, The Liphook Scratch Cup and the Centenary Cup at Porters Park. I was very pleased with my level of performance during 2021, allowing me to challenge and go close in numerous

tournaments. These included runner-up finishes in the Peter McEvoy Trophy, the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship, the Astor Salver and the Frilford Scratch. I was fifth in the English Women’s Open Strokeplay Championship at Wallasey, shooting 12 under par over the final 36 holes. This consistency earned me both the Women’s and the Girl’s England Golf Order of Merit titles. I proudly represented England in the Girls & Boys Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa. I won six points from six matches (three foursomes and three singles), the only player from any side to do so, in England’s victory. It was also brilliant to be part of the Surrey Women’s Team that won the National Final at Denham, Surrey’s first victory in 26 years. I had a 100% record in this event too, winning all five of my matches (singles). The team played superbly and were skillfully led by playing captain Nicola Taylor, County Captain Sue Wild and coach John Noble. Late in 2021, foreign travel became possible and I was able to go to Paris in November for the rearranged French U21 championships at Saint Cloud. The tournament had a strong field

comprising the best 90 players from across Europe, with only the top 16 progressing to matchplay after 36 holes. I qualified and won my first round match against a German international. I then faced a Junior Solheim Cup player in the quarterfinal. It was a tight match, made tougher by my putter breaking on the eighth hole when I was one down. I putted with my hybrid for the remaining holes, holing a 20 footer for birdies on 16, before two putting from 70 feet on the last to win one up! Sadly, using a borrowed putter, I lost my semi-final to the eventual champion, but I was pleased with my performance, as it was my first event in Europe for 2½ years. 2022 has begun well with a fourthplace finish in the Portuguese Women’s International Open over 72 holes at Montado near Lisbon. I’m super excited to have been selected in the initial squad of 12 for the Curtis Cup. The final eight players to take on the USA at Merion will be picked on 26 April. I’m very excited to see what 2022 will bring, before beginning life as a student athlete on a scholarship at Florida State University in August.

GOLF FITNESS

NO PAIN, NO GAME? I

t’s a common thought that in order to hit the ball further, not stiffen up on the back 9, feel in control of your swing and shoot overall lower scores then your fitness routine needs to be a punishing one. Whilst a little soreness from working out in the early stages is normal, a measure of an effective training programme should never be how sore you feel afterwards. After all, the 1 week on 3 month off routine never really helped anyone. Here are my top 3 tips to help manage your training sessions so you remain consistent and see the results on the golf course that your time and efforts deserve: CHOOSING THE RIGHT WEIGHT In order to get stronger and more flexible we should be safely lifting some weights so choosing a suitable one with each exercise is crucial. Too heavy could see compromises with technique however a weight that’s too light won’t see the necessary adaptations within a muscle both of

20

which can cause frustration with lack of progress. Choose a weight that leaves between 2-4 reps in the tank eg: if the set demands 10 reps, use a weight which you could do 12 reps with and stop at 10. RESTING BETWEEN SETS Most people don’t take enough rest between sets which could see a couple of problems: Either they didn’t work hard enough in the previous set or the following sets could be compromised with poor technique or tiring way too soon. I advise 1-2 minutes rest for the lighter sets (>10 reps) with as much as 3-5 minutes for the heavier work (<8 reps). Using rest periods to do some form of low intensity stretches is a good idea and can mean getting more work done in less time. REMAINING CONSISTENT It’s not uncommon to feel sore in the early stages of a training plan and could

By Sam Heffer

even be expected after a long hiatus however as previously mentioned, measuring the effectiveness of your workouts by how sore you feel is never a good idea due to the inconsistent nature it will create. The right weight, reps, sets and rest are all pointless if you’re unable to remain consistent with the average club golfer benefitting hugely from the 3x52 method. A basic workout done consistently well, 3x a week for a year will always be better than the ‘perfect’ workout done every now and then over the same time period. Sam is a fitness coach who helps the club golfer hit longer drives, shoot lower scores and play with more enjoyment without giving up the foods they love. PRO TALK

HOW TO ANALYSE YOUR GAME THIS YEAR?

PGA Professional, Sam Truman, explains how to effectively measure your game and how to pinpoint areas to work on.

H

ow often do we as golfers get drawn into practising in the same way week after week? I would say it happens far too often. Golfers get stuck on the range hitting the same clubs to the same targets. As golfers we need to make sure we are measuring our games effectively,

so we can use our precious practice time wisely. I’m going to help you measure your game on the course using a few useful techniques. These tips will help you figure out which parts of your game to work on and will help you get a really clear overview of your game, helping you reveal your strengths and weaknesses. MEASURING SCORES The game of golf has had some big changes occur over the last few years with the introduction of a world handicapping system which helps standardise the handicapping process around the globe. However, any handicapping process will come with its flaws. Whether that

22

it’s not an accurate representation of your game at a certain point in time or that the scores are not measured under tournament circumstances. With this in my mind, I suggest that players keep a casual play scoring record and a tournament scoring record. This will help you reveal how much the pressure of playing in a competition actually effects your scores. The last tip to monitor scoring is to break your year down into quarters and keep a scoring average (to par) during those times. How much does your scoring average change during the calendar year? MEASURING CONDITIONS To help understand your strengths and weaknesses, whenever you go

This simple habit may start to reveal that you struggle in certain conditions, i.e. you may suffer more so when the wind picks up which could suggest you aren’t good enough at knock down shots or that your normal ball flight is too high.

c Did you miss any putts inside 3ft? c Did you hole any putts outside of 15ft? c How many 3 putts did you have? Hopefully all the ideas above will help you plan out your practice better and will help you improve your game for the upcoming season. Remember to gather a good amount of data before making a decision on your game. Gathering data on your game helps you monitor your own game but it also helps your coach understand your game outside of lessons.

AND FIVE-STAR GASTRONOMY IN NORTH-EAST MALLORCA

Situated in the north-east of Mallorca near the historic town of Artà sits Carrossa Hotel Spa Villas, a stunning five-star resort well renowned for its luxurious fine dining and sensational setting in a 340-hectare estate.

E

njoying breath-taking views of the bay of Alcúdia and the rolling hills of Llevant, Carrossa has carved out a niche as one of the elite resorts on the Balearic Island, serving up a bespoke half-board stay that includes food in the Carrossa Restaurant. The terrace-based gastronomical flagship, which has recently been fitted with a panoramic extension and heated floor to improve the year-round temperatures, is one of three eateries at Carrossa and serves up three new starters, main dishes and desserts each day, as part of a constantly rotating menu. Its location on the golf-centric Spanish island gives guests access to a huge range of golfing excellence, offering a range of exclusive stayand-play packages and discounted

green fees at the likes of Club de Golf Alcanada, Capdepera Golf and Pula Golf Resort. Alcanada, a multi-award-winning course, is one of the most prestigious clubs on the Balearic Island and the only one next to the sea. Taking its name from the lighthouse and

picturesque bay, the Robert Trent Jones-Jr-designed layout is an enjoyable test and will host the Challenge Tour Grand Final in November this year. Capdepera, which is less than 10 miles from Carrossa, has the scenic Llevant hills as a stunning background to the signature 15th hole, which is well regarded as one of the most memorable on the island. Pula Golf Resort was originally founded in 1997 and redesigned by José Maria Olazábal between 2004 and 2006, with a design that makes incredible use of the Mallorcan landscape and has hosted many big names such as Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Francesco Molinari and Sergio Garcia. To further boost their offering outside of golf, Carrossa also offers a huge number of other amenities, such as a stunning outdoor infinity pool, state-of-the-art spa and array of treatments, as well as a sauna and a modern gym. As well as the Carrossa Restaurant, the resort also offers two other eateries, the Bistro Badia on the terrace, and the Bodega, set in a candle-lit wine cellar. Both provide a fantastic way to spend the evening before returning to the stunning accommodation, which includes a range of suites inside a converted 15th century Manor House. www.carrossa.com www.theazaleagroup.com

GANTON GOLF CLUB A visit to Ganton Golf Club remains a true ‘bucket list’ experience for those who ‘know and love’ golf.

T

he course is renown for fast running smooth surfaces, and the incredible bunkering, sandy wasteland areas, gorse, and fine wispy rough grasses present a great challenge. Golf’s leading architects and players have had a hand in fine tuning the course since 1891, including Mackenzie, Fowler, Colt and Ganton Club Professional Harry Vardon in the early 1900’s. It is difficult to categorise Ganton as a heathland or a links venue; golfers experience the feel of a seaside course, but it’s a few miles from the coast; for that reason, most describe it as an ‘inland links’! Many holes stand out; however, the tough finishing stretch from the 15th must be taken seriously and are truly memorable. Recent enhancements to

reintroduce the traditional sandy nature of the course have been introduced under the direction of leading golf architect Martin Ebert, and the course remains in Top100 World, European and UK rankings. Many national and international events have been played at Ganton, including the Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Curtis Cup team events as well as three British amateur championships and several national ones. Ganton remains a ‘go to’ venue for the R&A and England Golf, and in 2021 Ganton welcomed back the R&A British Senior Amateur Championship, and the Brabazon – English Amateurs Strokeplay Championship. Many guests take the opportunity to ‘stay & play’ using Vardon House,

FIVE CONSECUTIVE

WINS An international awards body, which recognises excellence in tourism, has crowned the Vale Resort as Wales’ Best Golf Hotel for the fifth year in a row.

T

he World Golf Awards were held at Park Hyatt in Dubai, bringing together pioneers, influencers and leading figureheads from across the world. Professionals working within each industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media – and members of the public, all have the chance to vote for their winners. The Vale Resort once again fought off stiff competition from The Celtic Manor Resort in Newport and Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel and Spa at the

eighth annual World Golf Awards. Stephanie Metson, marketing manager at the Vale Resort, said: “Although it’s been an unusual golf season, with Covid-19 restrictions swapping and changing, the fact that we have retained this coveted title not only highlights our impressive championship courses but also our customer service, which is secondto-none. “To meet the high standards of the World Travel Awards and be recognised for another year is hugely rewarding. The competition is

always fierce so scooping this award is testimony to the first-class service golfers can expect. “Our staff always work tirelessly– even more so during the pandemic – and this award is a huge testament to their unstinting commitment to going the extra mile in everything they do.” The Vale Resort’s two championship golf courses have been host to a number of PGA and European golf tournaments over the years. The Wales National, at 7,433 yards off the championship tees, is one of the longest courses outside America. The Lake course, slightly shorter at 6,436 yards, is just as challenging, and aptly named with water coming into play on 12 of its holes. Ms Metson added: “If playing on one of our championship courses wasn’t enough, our new gin distillery, located in the cellars of Hensol Castle, is now open. This means golfers can add a little something extra to their visit, including a tour of the distillery with tastings and even the chance to distil their own bottle of gin in our gin school.” The Vale Resort also retained its title of Wales’s Best Resort Spa 2021 for the fifth consecutive year at the World Travel Awards.
