WEST SURREY BEAT BURHILL TO WIN THE JOHN LING SALVER FINAL 2022 FARNHAM GC WIN THE

West Surrey and Burhill reached the final of the 2022 John Ling Salver which was played at the Roehampton Club on Monday 17th October.

The John Ling Salver is a 4BBB match play competition played off handicap with ten players each side. Representing their clubs were:

Burhill – Peter Gibson & Ian Caldwell; Phil Gregory & Fred Cahill; Gordon O’Malley & Neil Hazlehurst; Tim Harris & Martin Lawrence (C) and Steven Kim & Michael Ellis. West Surrey – Stuart Lawson (C) & Rodney Fenner; Richard Keary & Mike Bridson; Peter Arksey & Syd Phillips; Simon Chapman & Adrian Girdlestone and Tony Marshall & Mike Auty.

The match couldn’t have been any closer with the win going to West Surrey on the very last putt on the 18th green, exactly want you want for a final. Both teams played the match in great spirit and Burhill were gracious in their defeat.

Camberley Heath v Wimbledon Common

The final of the Surrey Fives between Wimbledon Common and Camberley Heath took place at Coombe Hill Golf Club on the 9th October 2022 with Wimbledon Common walking away victorious with a 3/2 win.

Representing their clubs: Wimbledon Common – Paul Gibling; Cris Peckham; Andy Ryan and Steve Murray (C) Camberley Heath – Jason Grech (C); Jamie Newington; Manuel Velosa; Bradley Peyton and Peter Blake.

PLATE AGAINST ROYAL MID SURREY

The players arrived in beautiful sunshine for the five aside scratch final taking place on the New Course at Burhill and despite the exceptional heavy traffic on both the M25 and A3 the players all made it to the first tee on time!

The players representing their v clubs were: Farnham – Nathan Tull; Craig Humphrey, Jack Millgate; Jamie Mullins; and Matt Butcher. Royal Mid Surrey – Ben McFadden; Dom Cotton’ Finlay Conrad; Theo Livesey and Charlie Prior

The teams must play in strict handicap order and the players were very evenly matched as on paper not one pairing had more than a shot difference, so it was set to be a very tight final.

David Basham, past Surrey President and member of Burhill was our starter for the day with the first pars teeing off at 12:00.

The first pair of Nathan and Ben finished all square, as did the third pair out Jack and Finlay. They agreed to wait to see whether they would need to go back out to play their matches to a conclusion i.e., a win or loss. The second match went the way of Farnham with Craig winning the match 6/5. This was followed by wins from both Jamie and Matt, making Farnham the winners of the 2022 Scratch Plate Final.

Tuesday 27th September was the final of the John Ling Trophy, hosted by Foxhills Golf Club.

The final was played between Hersham Golf Club and Surrey Downs Golf Club.

This was all that you hope for in a final, with the score tied at 2-2, everything came down to the last match. Surrey Downs finished the last match with a 3&2 victory to put their names on the trophy.

The U16 boys squad played in the South region of the league, against Kent, Sussex and Hampshire.

Surrey finished the league winning all 6 matches and therefore qualified for the final against East region winners Hertfordshire and Central region winners Essex.

The final was at Eaton Golf Club in Norwich. Surrey headed to the course on Saturday for a practice round, the weather was not kind, but the boys made best of the conditions.

With the weather much improved on Sunday morning, the final got underway with 8 triple match play matches.

A couple of Surrey boys were unfortunately not feeling well on the day and there were some surprise twists and turns as well as very close matches, with six going down the 18th hole.

All the Surrey boys battled hard, never giving up and eventually overcame Hertfordshire 5.5 to 2.5 points and Essex 5.5 to 2.5 points

Farnham Golf Club played hosts to the final of the Scratch League Knockout 2022 as Woodcote Park and Burhill battled it out for the title.

The course was in excellent condition after the severe weather changes. This was about as exciting as a final can get, with the scores level at 2-2 with the final group on the 18th green! This time, the result went the way of Woodcote Park after skipper Balraj Dhanjal made a superb up and down from trouble.

Saturday 1st October was the final of the Kelso Hamilton Knockout, played at Bletchingley Golf Club.

The final was played between Gary Player and Paul Marples vs Stewart Clements and Gavin Russell.

The match was played in great spirits, with Gary Player and Paul Marples holding on to see out a 4&3 victory.

The final of the Surrey County Card Foursomes Knockout took place on Sunday 2nd October, between the pairs of Toni Rossi & Neil Harradine (Dulwich & Sydenham Hill) vs Rob Cullen & Malcolm Allan (Tyrrells Wood), with Rob Cullen & Malcolm Allan seeing out a 3&2 victory.

COUNTY JUNIORS

ONE TO WATCH

JAMES BRASH

When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration?

I started playing golf competitively at the age of seven, playing small competitions and others including Surrey Rookie Tour, US Kids, British Junior Golf Tournament and Robert Rock. When I was 10 playing in the USKids European Championships at Craigielaw, I was selected to play in the Vanhorn Cup, which is a Ryder type event, Europe against Internationals. That was great fun.

My dad introduced me to golf at a young age and I immediately fell in love with the game.

Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream fourball?

Jordan Spieth is probably my favourite player, especially when he was in his prime. My dream fourball would have to be Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and Bryson Dechambeau.

What have been your career highlights so far?

Representing England U16 against Ireland and winning the North of England U16, coming from 5 behind on the last day.

I was also selected for South England regional squad and play for Surrey U16 and have played for Surrey U14 the past two years.

How often do you play / practice?

I practice 6 days a week, for 2-4 hours.

Is finding time to play whilst managing school / work etc difficult?

Now that I’m in GCSE year it is becoming a bit hard to find time to play golf and study but I am learning to manage my time more efficiently.

Are there specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have?

I use an app called Spider Golf, which gives data on strokes gained in different aspects of my game and dispersion with different

clubs. At the moment I am mainly focusing on putting for next season.

What are your goals for 2023 and beyond?

My goals are to get two top placements in the McGregor and the Carris next year. I would also like to represent England more times as it was a great experience. My long term goals are to go to college in America, and then eventually make it successfully as a professional golfer.

What advice would you give to young players just starting on their journey in golf?

Keep going and keep striving to be better, because if you want something enough then you won’t stop until you achieve it.

Finally, what are your other interests when you are not playing golf?

I also play tennis and table tennis inside and outside of school.

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE 19 PRO TALK

Winter plans... DAVID BOOTE’S

PRO TALK 20 SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

My season on the Challenge Tour ended around a month ago after another hard fought year. Lots of ups and downs for me, culminating with a 65th place finishing position on the OOM to retain my card for next year.

In reality, this was disappointing as my goal is to be playing on the European Tour. However, as always, there were plenty of lessons learned, and I’m already putting some good work in to be ready to restart in February in South Africa.

As I write this in early December, I have around a month until I head out to Thailand for some warm weather training! Before that, some hard yards are being made off the course.

One of my main goals this winter is to get physically stronger in the gym. If I can make some small improvements and set up a good regime now, it will help me to maintain my strength and weight levels throughout the season ahead.

Travelling on the golf circuit imposes stress and strain on the body and by the end of the year this can take its toll on the golf swing. Time well spent in the gym now and through the season also gives a benefit to mental health with a different focus to the normal one of good golf statistics!

I use my local leisure centre in

Banstead and normally start very early morning with 30/40 minutes of swimming followed by an hour’s exercise programme from my strength and conditioning coach.

In the pool I concentrate on single or double lengths at full pace in order to encourage my fast-twitch muscles to activate which will help to create swing speed.

In the gym I work on functional movement exercises such as squats, lunges, deadlifts and other push/pull exercises. The overall aim is to create more stability in my golf swing as well as more ground force for speed.

Another goal for my off season is getting back to basics with the golf swing.

During the season it is difficult to maintain levels of technique with the amount of competitive play and travelling. On the Challenge Tour I don’t have the luxury of having my coach travel with me to events, so a lot of the technical work has to be selfregulated.

Whilst competing it’s easy to get out of kilter with grip, posture and alignment as you are trying to keep things as simple as possible and not worrying about what your swing ‘looks like’. Now is the chance to put in some hard work with my longtime coach, Neil Matthews, as well

as practicing out on the courses and great facilities at my home club, Walton Heath.

It’s not all about golf however... I can finally enjoy spending time at home with friends and family. This year I was away for around 30 weeks and it makes you appreciate the time you have at home even more. I’m lucky to live within a short distance of central London and it’s great to spend time exploring the city and seeing friends. I also enjoy the off season as it is a chance to go to as many Wrexham AFC games as I can!

My family have been huge Wrexham fans our whole lives and luckily there are quite a lot of matches in the London area to get to and we often travel up to North Wales to watch them as well!

The recent takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has lifted the profile and hopes of the club and seems to have put Wrexham back on the football map! Football trips are often accompanied with a visit to Prestatyn Golf Club or across to one of my favourites in Wales, Royal St. David’s (I promise it’s not just because of the name!).

CHOOSE TO FOCUS

ON THE PROCESS NOT THE OUTCOME TO PLAY BETTER GOLF

Of course, we all want to play well and shoot low scores, that is obviously preferable to playing poorly. But from my experience of working with competitive golfers over the past 10 years, the goals that I have found to be more conducive to better performance and lower scores are called process goals.

The outcome of any shot or round will always be out of our control. When we are constantly focusing on our score and predicting what we might shoot, the uncertainty of it can cause us to have performance anxiety, or nerves, which can affect our focus, and the increased tension will affect our swings. Our mood can go up and down with the outcome of our shots and the scores that go on the scorecard.

Process goals are the opposite, they are completely within our control, and instead of being in the future they are in the present. The process is our plan for our attention and actions at any moment in the round, regardless of how we are playing. When we bring our attention to the process, the mind is quiet and focused on what’s most important NOW and the body is more relaxed. Ironically, the more we focus on the process and less on the outcome, the more likely we are to get those outcomes we desire.

After Rory McIlroy won The Open Championship in 2014, he said: “I

just kept telling myself two words, ‘process’ and ‘spot’. ‘Process’, reminds me to really get into my process and not care about the result, and ‘spot’ is for my putting: ‘just pick your spot, roll it over your spot,’ and that was it, ‘process’ and ‘spot’.

So what are ‘process goals’? Each player has to make their own decision on what these are. They can be anything that a player wants to bring their attention to in the round, such as ‘a clear target for every shot’, ‘ending the shot when the club goes back in the bag’, ‘being present in between shots’, ‘good body language’, ‘pre round routines’, ‘pre shot routines’, etc.

A simple way to start defining your process is to write down a couple of key things you will do in each of the following phases of the round:

c Pre-round routine

c Pre-shot routine

c During the swing

c Post shot routine

c ‘In between shot’ time

c How you will deal with setbacks and negative thoughts

This will be the first draft of your ‘process’.

Whenever I review a round with a student, I don’t ask them what their score was. For me the measure of success is whether they followed the process and whether they were able to be the best version of themselves as a player, no matter what score was on the scorecard.

If you can do this with 100% effort and discipline, you will free yourself from the negative effects of outcome focus and you are more likely to play your best golf.

You can find out more about him and his coaching at www.golfstateofmind.com
