NEW ERA FOR REIGATE HEATH GC AS AMANDA TAKES CHARGE Peter Alliss’s little gem welcomes its first female manager for the 21st century
W
ith its long heritage of supporting women and juniors in golf, Amanda Godwin is excited to be Reigate Heath GC’s first female manager for over 20 years. Reigate Heath GC is one of the best examples in the UK of a nine hole heathland course, and as one member put it: “We now have a woman running the country again, and we think Amanda’s appointment is just what Reigate Heath needs as well!”. In fact Amanda isn’t the club’s first female manager, as Doreen Howard was the club secretary from 1970 to 1993, nor is Reigate Heath Amanda’s first nine hole club, as she rebuilt the fortunes of Strawberry Hill GC in Twickenham over the past two years. Amanda explains: “Doreen laid the foundations for the club’s success for over two decades. Now, as a members’ golf club in the 21st century we face all sorts of new and very different challenges. My job is to make sure the experiences the club gives its members and visitors is one they love.” “That’s all about the terrific teams of people here. Our Pro Shop led by Cliff Gough, our newly promoted Director of Golf, includes our own and now fully qualified female PGA Professional Leah Roelich. She and Cliff are clearly passionate about getting a lot more beginners, women and children into golf, besides looking after the members and visitors.” Amanda continues: “The course is both a golfing and as an SSSI an environmental challenge, but Derek Walder and our greenkeeping team work very hard to ensure our historic
8
heathland nine hole course is always in terrific condition throughout the year, and our greens win constant praise from all who come and play on them.” “The special Reigate Heath warmth and welcome is down to our bar staff led by Zach and our fantastic caterers Premier Dining led by Kevin and Lydie, and in the past few weeks I’ve noticed a lot of terrific feedback from our members and guests.”
Amanda summarises: “I’m not a golfer, so my focus is on the things that make this club a wonderful experience, and increasing the attention to detail to all aspects of the experience we deliver. My job is to encourage and guide as well as manage, so together we will ensure that Reigate Heath GC, which has in its own way done so much for Surrey golf, continues to be a very special and happy place in the 21st century.”

DOWNLAND GOLF AT ITS FINEST OPENED IN 1890 THE COURSE WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED BY JAMES BRAID AND IS ONE OF THE UK’S FINEST DOWNLAND COURSES
Banstead Downs Golf Club is a situated on the Surrey and South London border. The course is a par 71 measuring nearly 6,600 yards. Fast draining downland fairways ensure that the course stays playable throughout the year when many other courses are closed. As well as catering for the needs of golfers, the clubhouse has a large bar, dining room and function rooms making it an ideal venue for weddings or other functions. We have invested considerably over recent years to both extend, improve and to modernise the clubhouse and course. We provide a warm and friendly welcome to all visitors and prospective new members.

SURREY WOMAN WITH MS LEADING THE WAY FOR OTHERS TO GET INTO GOLF Surrey golfer Aimi Bullock is showing that she won’t let disability get in the way of playing the game – and she’s hoping her story will encourage more people to take up and enjoy the sport.
A
imi, who has multiple sclerosis, is one of five English golfers who are sharing their experiences following the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, which shone a spotlight on disability sport. However, many disabled people still find it difficult to get involved with sports and physical activity. The English Federation of Disability Sport set out to encourage disabled people to be more active through its recent campaign ‘Together We Will’, and England Golf, the governing body for amateur golf, is working with clubs and counties across the country to help and encourage more people with disabilities to play golf.
Aimi’s story: Aimi Bullock, 43, from Surrey has been an active sportswoman throughout her life. She was forced to stop playing hockey eight years ago due to a bout of optic neuritis that left her with impaired vision. Unable to play several of her favourite sports as a result, Aimi channelled her energy into golf – a sport she had first played in her early 20s. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2013, Aimi refused to let the condition alter her life and competitive nature, competing in the Ride London-Surrey in both 2013 and 2014. Playing golf became a way for Aimi to continue playing competitive sport, even during the worst bouts of her illness. Aimi said: “It was tough not being able to play hockey when I had my optic neuritis eight years ago, but being
10
able to play golf and keep playing a competitive sport was fantastic. I try and do something golf related twice a week just to stay active and keep myself feeling good. I can’t always play 18 holes twice a week so will play nine or go to the driving range.” Aimi tries to play as much as her health allows, but can still find it difficult to play a full 18 holes at times. Her neurologist is encouraging Aimi to play golf regularly as it helps keep her active and the competitive nature of sport helps her cope mentally with the effects of her condition. “I love competing against my friends or in competitions at Woking Golf Club and Sunningdale Ladies’ Golf Club and I got involved with competitive disability golf for the first time this summer. I signed up to the play in the European Individual Championships in
the Czech Republic, finishing in third place. I’ll definitely look to playing more disabled golf tournaments.” “Golf is a great sport for disabled people as anyone can play. It isn’t as demanding on your body compared with other sports. It’s a great way to keep playing competitive sport and stay sharp physically and mentally.” Jamie Blair, England Golf Disability Officer said, “It is incredibly important that golf is available to everyone, whether you are disabled or not. At England Golf, we are working hard to help encourage as many disabled people as possible to play golf through a number of initiatives including our ‘Get into golf’ campaign. People can head to www.getintogolf.org to find out about beginner courses, taster lessons and special events at clubs and ranges nationwide.”

NIKEGOLF ROOKIETOUR PRIZE PRESENTATION SUNDAY 6TH NOVEMBER 2016 – PINE RIDGE GOLF CLUB
W
ith over 200 people attending, what a truly fantastic afternoon the recent RookieTour end of season prize presentation at Pine Ridge was. The tables were covered with 212 prizes. The presentation was launched by Terry Christy, President of Surrey County Golf, who commented on the healthy state of Surrey junior golf and that he believed that future European Tour players were sitting in the audience. From its conception in 2007 the RookieTour continues to develop and evolve. For 2016 there were 12 regular season events plus the end of season ‘Race to the Stars’ which this year was played at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, making 13 events in total. In 2016 a total of 72 players
12
competed in the Young Improvers Group (YIGs), a series of events for U13 boys and girls with club handicaps of 37-54 or no handicap at all. This year the presentation for the Rookie League was incorporated into the presentation. The Rookie League is a team matchplay knockout competition. In 2016 the U14 Rookie League runners-up were Royal Wimbledon, and the winners were Farleigh, the first Club to retain the trophy. This year for the first time a Rookie League for U18 players was held. The U18 Rookie League runners-up were Shirley Park and the inaugural winners were Wentworth. With five different competitions at every RookieTour event, plus the winners from the four YIGs events there were plenty of trophies to pick up and lots of big smiles! One Hole-in-One prize was awarded this year to Aidan Millham for his ace at Hoebridge. The Birdie Trophy, the idea of long standing Junior Committee member Peter Barratt, who also donated the fine trophy, was awarded to Shergo Kurdi, who scored 19 gross birdies during the course of the RookieTour season. The Sinclair Salver, awarded to the player who in the opinion of the
committee has demonstrated good etiquette and has upheld the traditions of golf throughout the year was awarded to Jack Kurzberg. Finally the five 2016 Order of Merit winners were invited up to receive their prizes. Rocky Chapman claimed the U12 Boys scratch competition. Leo Vorobyev picked up the U12 Boys handicap Order of Merit. Sarah Mardani took the U14 girls handicap. Amir-Ali Safari was the winner of the U14 Boys handicap Order of Merit. And finally Shergo Kurdi won the U14 scratch Order of Merit trophy. There can be no doubt the NikeGolf RookieTour run by the Surrey County Golf is a great success and is very likely to be the largest junior golf tour of its kind in the UK if not Europe.

T
ests which Heavenly Hybrid have just run on golfers, have proven without any doubt that they were more accurate and consistent when putting with the HH1 putter from off the green (including light rough) than they were with their own wedges! So why should you use the HH1? •W hen the ground is wet it is very easy for your wedge to dig into the ground and get stuck, where as the unique hybrid head design of the HH1 simply glides through the grass. •M ost golfers do struggle with a good successful chipping technique, where
as all golfers have a fairly successful putting stroke. • The most accurate shot in golf is a putt, so the quicker you can use a putter the better. • All golfers are much more confident when putting rather than chipping. • 1/3 more putts using the HH1 finished inside 10 feet of the hole than when chipping. This is one very simple easy guaranteed way for you to start enjoying your game straight away. Are you struggling with the shanks, lack of distance or inconsistent iron striking?
Then why aren’t you using the 100% guaranteed shank proof hybrid irons from Heavenly Hybrid? Ask yourself this question: Why do I play golf? I am sure most of you will say for enjoyment. TRIO DEBUT AT QUINTA DO LAGO
Up-and-coming southern stars Annabell Fuller, Martha Lewis and Alfie Fox have vowed to learn from the experience of taking part in the 2016 Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Championship after missing out on the top honours at Quinta do Lago in Portugal.
T
he trio were all making their first appearances in the elite 54-hole event, which has been won in the past by the likes of European Ryder Cup stars Justin Rose and Matthew Fitzpatrick and leading Ladies European Tour players Melissa Reid and Carly Booth. Roehampton star Fuller, 16, playing in the tournament three years after her sister Sam finished second in the event in the Algarve, fared best out of the three, coming fifth in the girls’ competition, three places ahead of Lewis, who plays at St.George’s Hill. Fox, 17, who also plays at Roehampton, failed to build on a promising opening round of 74 on Quinta do Lago’s acclaimed North Course as he eventually finished sixth in the boys’ event. The trio had no answer to the impressive performances of Hertfordshire duo Hannah Screen and Harry Goddard, with the former winning the girls’ title by two strokes and the latter claiming a runaway nineshot victory in the boys’ competition.
14
Fuller is determined to make amends next year and said: “It was a great experience at Quinta do Lago. The greens struck everyone as a really big battle and they were really quick. I got better at controlling the distance as the rounds went on. And hopefully I can come back next year as I still have a few more years left as a junior.” Lewis added: “I didn’t really play that great during the week, but my room-mate Hannah Screen won the tournament so I was really happy for her. Now in its fourth decade, this year’s tournament featured a record number of entries with an estimated 25,855 juniors participating, an overall increase of 38 per cent on figures last year. Fuller, Lewis and Fox were part of an elite line-up of nine girls and 12 boys to take part in the competition, which was hosted by Quinta do Lago for the fourth year in a row, with the action taking place on the resort’s North Course – one of three championship courses at the resort. Officially opened by McGinley in October 2014, the 6,156m-layout has
quickly risen to become one of the new stars of European golf, and played a key role in Quinta do Lago being named as Portugal’s best golf resort in Golf World’s inaugural rankings of the Top 100 Resorts in Continental Europe 2016/17.

JUNIOR NEWS
Annabell Fuller ONE TO WATCH...
When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration?
What are your goals for 2017 and beyond?
I started playing golf at the age of three and my inspiration is Jason Day.
My goals for 2017 are to win a national title and take my golf to a higher level. One day I would like to play on the LPGA Tour and be the best golfer I can be.
Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream fourball? My favourite player is Jason Day because he never stops trying. My dream fourball would be Tiger Woods, John Daly and Jack Nicklaus. 2016 has been a great year for you, what have been your highlights? The highlights of 2016 have been winning the Sir Henry Cooper Masters as it is an international event and playing for England in Spain and at the Home Internationals. I also enjoyed playing in the Daily Telegraph Junior finals in Portugal. Are there specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have? I monitor my golf through improvement and keeping a record of my rounds. If I feel that an area is not good enough I will make sure I work on it and I can identify these areas by using the stats I have and talking to my coach, Ian Clark (ianclarkgolf.co.uk).
16
What advice would you give young players just starting on their journey in golf? If you love the game you need to work hard and keep trying to get better and never let anyone tell you what you will be able to achieve because if you work hard enough anything is possible!
We wish Annabell all the best for the future and will watch her progress with interest!
PLAYER PROFILE Member at: Roehampton Current handicap: +2 Annabell has represented Surrey at junior and senior level. At the age of 14 she represented England in the Girls Home Internationals and the Junior Open. In 2001 she was runner-up in the Scottish Girls U16 Championship and came 5th in the English girls Order of Merit. She came 2nd in three ladies events and won the prestigious Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters at Nizels Golf Club.

U18’S ARE SOUTH EAST CHAMPIONS
SURREY JUNIORS WIN 2 OUT OF 3 LEAGUES
P T
he EGU South East region introduced a new League that includes the 11 counties in the region, then split into three groups who play each other in a league with the winner going through to the end of season final. Surrey’s group included Hampshire, Kent and Sussex and after winning, the group went through to the final that was played at Essendon Golf Club at the end of September. The other finalists were BB&O and Norfolk – Surrey beat Norfolk
comfortably but drew with a very strong BB&O team. As the win over Norfolk was better than BB&O’s, Surrey won the event. A great win for the county.
laying in three leagues, this year the Surrey Juniors won two and came second in the third. The U14’s won their League quite comfortably with the U18’s winning the South East Group at the end of September. It then came down to the last match of the U16 League to determine the winner – Surrey played well but eventually could not catch Essex who won the league. It is a fantastic achievement that Surrey can win two leagues and narrowly miss the third – a great position for the county and shows the standard of our players compared with other counties. No county has ever won all three leagues – something we hope Surrey will achieve in 2017.
NEW LEAGUE FORMAT FOR 2017 THE EGU SOUTH EAST REGION IS CHANGING THE FORMAT FOR THE LEAGUES NEXT YEAR. The U18 and U16 Leagues will be in the same format – all 11 counties of the South East Group will be involved, with counties split into smaller groups playing a round robin league of home and away matches. Surrey’s group will include Hampshire, Kent and Sussex.
18
The winner of our group will go forward and play the other section winners at an end of season final. Each match will be 9 holes foursomes and 18 holes singles. The U14 League will stay as it is for the time being. A new league is proposed for the
Colts and this will be a new format where players must be over 18 and under age 25. The Colts are a very strong group and the purpose of the age limits is to ensure they have competitive golf against their peers.

Sutton Green’s Nadean Withers held her nerve to secure victory and see Sutton Green retain the trophy.
THE HICKS TROPHY
Surrey’s Annabel Dimmock has finished a fantastic 5th in the LET Qatar Open at Doha Golf Club. Annabel shot rounds of 69,67,70 and 72 for a 10 under par total of 278 and the first top ten finish of her career. She now moves up to 58th on the LET Order of Merit. Many congratulations to Annabel on a great achievement.
Jemma Milton (Hankley Common) became Surrey U18 Champion after shooting 76, 72 at Cuddington GC beating Pavani Kumar (Royal Mid Surrey) who scored rounds of 74, 76. Jemma also won the U15 Championship.
T
he Hicks Trophy was contested between the holders Walton Heath and Royal Mid-Surrey who had not won the competition since 1991. On paper the RMS team looked
20
formidable and were up in four of the five matches at the turn. The Walton players however fought back to retain the title by the narrowest of margins 3 – 2.
There is a new U10 Champion, Jasmine Kandlekar. The future looks very bright for junior golf in Surrey!

WHITGIFT SCHOOL GOLF ACADEMY ALUMNI ENJOYS PGA TOUR SUCCESS Whitgift School (Croydon) is celebrating one of it’s recent alumni qualifying for his first ever PGA Tour event.
F
ormer student Isaac Lam earned his place in the 120 man field at the Clearwater Bay Open, part of the PGA Tour’s China Series, after carding a round of 72 and winning a play off in Monday qualifying. This success follows that of another Old Whitgiftian, George Mullins, who won the Order of Merit on the Jamega Tour earlier this summer in just his first season as a professional. Head of Golf, Neil Kendrick explained he was delighted to see the school’s Golf Academy graduates doing so well: “Our aim is to deliver a national level academy programme in a school environment, providing the boys with the necessary support required to achieve their dreams of becoming professional athletes, whilst also getting a first-class education. So we are delighted to see the first
24
two boys to have completed our programme doing so well”. Benefiting from a dedicated team of expert coaches – including European Tour coach Hugh Marr and led by England Golf coach Matt Antell – the Golf Academy provides specialist support for talented boys in all areas of their game using Whitgift’s multi-million pound facilities. It forms part of a wider offering of golf at the school where pupils are introduced to the game and receive coaching as part of the curriculum from resident PGA professional Tim Trodd. Three of Whitgift’s current pupils have also been selected to represent Surrey in the Friendship Trophy, where they will be competing against regional teams from Spain, Germany and France in the annual event supported by former Masters champion and
European Ryder Cup player Jose Maria Olazabal. One of the players selected – Harry Plowman-Ollington – only began playing the game four years ago having been introduced to the sport through school. He has since reduced his handicap to scratch whilst also achieving 9 A*s in his GCSEs this summer. “The Golf Academy programme has helped me develop my abilities both on and off the course” said Plowman-Ollington, this year’s Surrey u18 match play champion.

THE OPPOSITE
effect of golf By Steve Blacklee
M
any things in golf actually work the opposite way to what many people think. This may well be the reason why so many golfers play with the same undesirable shot pattern for years on end! Here I’m going to cover some of the most common misconceptions and maybe one will ring true with your game and you can put it right.
BLUE = CLUB DIRECTION ORANGE = CLUB FACE ALIGNMENT
1 THE SLICE This has got to be the most common mis-shaped shot in the game and it’s a distance killer as well as a directional problem. For a right hander, the more the ball curves to the right, the more the player instinctively swings to the left to try and stop it. The more the club travels left through impact the more likely the ball is to curve to the right. It does sometimes take a bit of effort to cure a slice but there are only two main variables which create this unwanted side spin. The club path (the direction the club is travelling at impact) relative to the alignment of the club face. In simple terms, if the club face is open relative to the club path, there will be a slice spin on the ball. So, to stop the ball slicing to the right, you need to swing the club to the right! Couple this with a slightly closed club face to the path and you’re heading in the right direction to create a neutral or draw flight and lose the slice for good!
1 2
2 THE SHOT THAT SHOOTS HARD RIGHT 2ND FEELS HORRIBLE! Some people describe this as a big slice, some as a toe shot and some as a shank. That’s quite a variation and each one of those descriptions come off a completely different part of the club head! When a shank happens, I ask if the person knows where they have just struck the ball. A lot of the time they point to the toe end of the club and although this would also

send the ball shooting off to the right it’s much more common for the fault to be hitting the heel (a shank). Firstly, you need to know where the ball is being struck. We use face stickers but some masking tape should serve the same purpose. Hit a shot and see where the tape is damaged. Once you’ve found out and if like many you’ve discovered that it is actually out of the heel of the club then you can reverse your strategy and stop the ball going hard right by hitting it out of the toe! 3 THE SKIED DRIVE (OR VERY HIGH FLIGHT)
4
If you have a tendency to sky your drives or shoot them skyward very quickly it can be easy to think that your sweeping the ball up too much. It is normally due to the ball being struck near the top of the club face. Firstly, there is more loft at the top of the face due to the curvature of the face and if the ball is struck below the equator of the ball it will shoot sharply upwards. These shots are normally caused by the club actually travelling downwards too much into impact. If the club is descending, the strike location will come up the face and be hit with excess loft or skied. To hit the middle of the face where the loft is correct the driver needs to be travelling close to level to the ground. A little down or up is normally okay but if a high skied shot is common for you your club is travelling too steeply down and the ball goes too steeply up! 4 THINNING YOUR PITCH SHOTS
CLUB HEAD
BALL FLIGHT
4
Around the green, especially when going over a hazard it’s tempting to give the ball a helping hand to get air born and try and lift the ball into the air. Unfortunately, this will raise the leading edge of the club up the ball and cause a thin shot, which goes low and fast across the other side of the green leaving you with a similar shot back. The key to getting the ball up is to get the club going down. With a pitching wedge or sand wedge you will have enough natural loft on the club to get it into the air, you don’t need to help it. A downward strike on the ball will ensure you get the club to the bottom of the ball and the loft of the club will then do its job to get the ball into the air with an added bonus of backspin created by the descending strike. So, to get the ball to go up, hit down!

FELIXSTOWE FERRY GOLF CLUB
IPSWICH GOLF CLUB
Aldeburgh Golf Club has two courses, the 18 hole Championship Course, ranked 37th in England by Golf World and the River Course, a delightful 9 holes more suitable for beginners and high handicap golfers. The course is built on maritime heathland with far reaching views of the River Alde and the North Sea. It’s a great course, described by agronomist and R&A adviser Alistair Beggs as “having amongst the best playing surfaces in the land”.
Regarded as one of the finest golf courses in East Anglia, Thorpeness is a coastal heathland course, winding through silver birch trees, gorse and heather with the 18th hole framed by the iconic house in the clouds and the Thorpeness Windmill. It’s a stone’s throw from the Suffolk coast, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The 6,421 yard layout will test golfers of all abilities with 8 par 4’s over 400 yards adding to the Thorpeness challenge.
Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club is seen by many as the only true links course in Suffolk. It offers 27 holes of golf – the 18 hole Martello Links with breath taking views of the Suffolk coast line and the 9 hole Kingsfleet course, with views across the Deben Estuary – a great all-rounder when it comes to attracting visitors. The Martello course is an easy walking links and the stretch from the 2nd to the 10th contains only Par 4’s.
Ipswich Golf Club, holds a long-term standing as one of the best golf courses in England. Currently listed within the country’s top 100, the club has embarked on a course of renovations to continually enhance its famed Purdis Heath Course. Designed by legendary course architects James Braid and Fred Hawtree, the track is a heathland haven that makes the best use of natural contours as it winds its way through the Suffolk countryside.

MEET THE PRO
At what age did you start playing golf and which club did you start at? I was introduced to the game (before I can remember!) by my grandparents who are both lifelong members at Romsey Golf Club in Hampshire. As a child I played a range of sports to a high level and although my early passion was cricket, golf became my primary focus from around the age of 15. I played as a member at Romsey and Bramshaw golf clubs before going away to university. Who was/is your biggest influence? The players I work with! They challenge me to help them solve problems and to find solutions in their own pursuit of success. I am therefore constantly having to refine my coaching practice and seek new ways to improve my own coaching skills to meet these challenges. From a learning perspective, I am fortunate to work alongside two of the best practitioners in golf – European Tour coach Hugh Marr and golf biomechanist Dr Mark Bull. This provides me with a unique opportunity to learn from them and to share experiences with some of the best players in the game. Which is your favourite Surrey course (apart from the one you are resident at) and why? I love Hankley Common. There is something very special about the whole experience – the landscape, views, design and condition of course – always a pleasure to get an invite to play there. Which is your favourite course worldwide? Nowhere can beat the St Andrews golf experience! It is a ‘must’ for any golfer. What course is on your bucket list that you have not played yet? As watching The Masters on TV was one of my earliest golfing memories and having seen so many iconic moments there it would have to be Augusta National. What have been the highlights of your career? Every time I see a player achieve a personal goal or leave a lesson having
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
acquired a new skill is a highlight. The experience of building trusting relationships and having a positive influence on the development of a young person or on the leisure time of a recreational player is very fulfilling and at the heart of the joy of coaching. From a personal coaching perspective 2015 was a special year as I coached the winners of all but one of the junior county champions as well as the winner of the Surrey Rookie Tour. In addition, the Surrey U14s retained the Inter-Counties League Title and Whitgift School won the national HMC Singles, Strokeplay & Foursomes Championships. Which Surrey club has the best half way hut? My former club Tyrrells Wood has a fantastic half way hut. Its position between the 1st and 10th tees makes it not only a great place to get a drink and a bite to eat, but it’s also the main point for people before a round and midround when you meet people who have completed the other half of the course. The club’s great culture of stopping for a tea break ‘at the turn’ can be a blessing or a curse depending on how you’re playing! What advice would you give to the Surrey youngsters wanting to turn professional? Surround yourself with good people and better players. The behaviours and attitudes of others will influence many of the choices you make, so choose the right environments in which to learn, practice and play. It is also worth noting that many of the best players were not the best amongst their peer group at a younger age. So do not always judge yourself against others. Reflect instead on your own abilities and forge your own path. That is where having an experienced mentor is key – be that a trusted friend, a former player or a good coach.
lots of father and son time together playing football, cricket, golf etc. or going to watch football – whether it’s the local senior side for their team Three Bridges or to the Olympic Stadium to watch their favourite team West Ham United. Dream foursome? I could kill a few birds with one stone by playing a round at Augusta National with my two boys (Lewis and Joshua) and Tiger Woods. I think he knows the place well enough to show us the way around. If you could change one aspect, rule or thing about golf, what would it be and why? The time it takes to play a round. I believe strongly that golf needs to offer more variety regarding the size of course people can play – whether that is 6 holes or 9 holes – in addition to the traditional 18 hole layout. Like in other sports, the purest form of the game at an elite level is always going to be the longer format, 72 hole stroke play, like 90 minute football or 5 day Test cricket but at a junior and recreational level the games various stakeholders need to be encouraging and in some cases insisting that shorter formats are made available by clubs. You wouldn’t play a 90 minute football match on a full size pitch at 10 years old – yet we expect juniors to play 18 hole stroke play off the mens tees. In football and in cricket we have also witnessed a real growth in recreational participation with 5-a-side and T20 formats on offer to those who are short on leisure time. Golf needs to be able to offer the option to play regular club events after work or within a shorter time frame on a weekend.
What do you enjoy doing off the course? I have two young boys who I love to spend as much time with as possible. Fortunately for me (unfortunately for my wife!) they are both sports mad too, so we can share

LAUREN BLEASE I
t was never my dream to play golf professionally when I was growing up. I always wanted to be a ballet dancer and then a tennis player. It wasn’t until I was about 17 that I even thought about playing golf. My parents and brother are all golfers so I guess it was inevitable that I would eventually play but I had always hated the idea. I saw golf clubs as stuffy, intimidating and boring. However, that all changed during my last year of school at Epsom College. I played a lot of tennis before I took up golf and was fortunate to have a great coach, who along with my parents taught me the value of hard work and determination. I had a very sporty upbringing and we were always active as a family so when I had a string of minor injuries playing tennis, I had to do something to fill the void. I joined Coombe Hill Golf Club with my family and started chipping and putting. My mum would
32
spend hours with me at the range helping me and I soon became hooked. I started playing in some local junior tournaments and the first one I played at Wimbledon Park, I won the nett prize with a score of 54. My brother was also playing this event and when I saw him and my dad at the end of the round I had to get them to check my score as I didn’t know what I was doing and they didn’t believe that I’d shot that score. My first real ambition to turn pro came when my mum took me to St Andrews to watch the Women’s British Open. I was over awed at all these amazing women playing golf, I loved their clothes and their style but also how strong and powerful they looked on the golf course. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at St Andrews and was lucky enough to go back and play a tournament there a few years later. After Epsom College, I was awarded a golf scholarship to Florida
International University in Miami. Playing collegiate tournaments was great and I loved competing against other girls and meeting people from all over the world. After two great years in America, I decided to turn pro. Playing on tour was a wonderful experience as I was able to visit so many different countries and was lucky enough to have my mum travel with me to some tournaments. One of my favourite tournaments was at 13th Beach Golf Club outside of Melbourne, Australia. I was staying right on the 18th hole on the top floor of an apartment building with amazing views over the golf course. Most of the players were also staying with families on the course that week which was nice as everyone was together. This tournament was unusual as the men and women were playing a tournament at the same time. It was a great

There was a group of women followed by a group of men which was nice for the spectators as they were able to watch a variety of golf. Another course that I will always remember was the course at Sun City, in South Africa. It was excruciatingly hot and there were wild animals roaming the course. We had course rangers standing on the first tee with paintball guns as there were baboons running around everywhere. After playing well in a number of tournaments in South Africa I qualified for the Investec Cup Finals to be held at Millvale, which is so exclusive and remote that we had extreme difficulty trying to find it. Another player and I ended up driving down lots of mud tracks with large overhanging branches and manged to get what we thought was completely

lost until we stumbled upon one of the best courses I’ve ever played. After playing on tour for more than four years, I have now started coaching at Foxhills Golf Club which I am loving and I really enjoy helping people to achieve their goals in golf. They have amazing facilities there and the junior programme is fantastic. I am hoping to help them build an even more successful academy for all golfers where I will be focusing on encouraging more women and girls to take up the game. It is my hope that more people will take up golf, so if you’ve never tried, go down to your local course and check it out. Hope to see you all on the golf course soon!

Situated on the Surrey and South London border Banstead Downs Golf Club has recently invested over £1.4million to both extend, improve and modernise the clubhouse and course.

pened in 1890 the course was originally designed by James Braid and is one of the UK’s finest downland courses. The course is a par 71 measuring nearly 6,600 yards. Fast draining downland fairways ensure the course stays playable throughout the year when many other courses are closed. With four sets of tee’s, golfers of all abilities will find the course challenging but fair. The natural topography provides ideal golfing terrain as nature intended, rarely giving a flat stance, and challenging golfers of every level to use their full

WHY IS BANSTEAD DOWNS THE BEST WINTER COURSE IN SURREY? “During my weeks off from playing on the European Tour I love coming back to play at Banstead Downs GC. The course offers a great test with numerous natural features, which when combined, make it an enjoyable place to play. On a clear day, the raised elevation provides stunning views towards the north with The Shard and Canary Wharf in full splendour from the 13th and 14th tees. In the summer months the course plays similar to a very fast, bouncy, tight, links style course with the added bonus of long hay lining the fairways. But it is in the winter that this special course comes to life and provides a much more challenging and very different test of golf.
JUNIORS
The gusting winter winds and slightly softer ground (offering much less roll) make the tight fairways play a little more generously. However, every hole plays much longer forcing a driver off many tees, followed by long irons, hybrids and occasionally fairway woods in to the greens. For me, this is my favourite time to play at Banstead Downs GC and with several festive roll ups in December this provides some much-needed competition to test my game against the members, ahead of the upcoming winter schedule.
The junior section at Banstead Downs has a strong history in developing their junior members. The club’s most notable success is Ross McGowan who played the European Tour winning the Spanish Masters in 2009. In addition, the club currently has three previous junior members who are developing their skills through scholarships in America. The junior section is open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18, and they are actively recruiting new members including less experienced players.
Why not come and try Banstead GC this winter?” Ross McGowan, European Tour Player
THE ACADEMY The Academy is open to all adults over 18 and offers the following benefits: • Group lessons on the basics • 9 individual lessons on a monthly basis • A 9 hole playing lesson (in a group of 3) • A lesson in golf etiquette • Use of practice facilities • Play on the course (at selected times only) • Dedicated competitions

for private dining and parties. Specialising in providing a quality of service and cuisine that is second to none, there is a range of hospitality packages to suit all member’s corporate and private needs. MEMBERSHIP The club offers a variety of membership options, with the majority of members being in either the full or 5-day playing categories. Other categories include those for younger adults, juniors, country and social. All playing members are entitled to play either 5 or 7 days a week as determined by their membership category, both in general play and in the wide range of competitions open to the various sections of the club. Many members also enjoy representing the club in matches, which range from very competitive events through to the more

All playing and social members are entitled to full use of the clubhouse facilities, and to enjoy their choice of the club’s social events which range from candlelit dinners to Elvis evenings Abba nights and quiz evenings. With sensational weather and temperatures to rival those registered-on thermometers in some continental parts, Devon is a place that is a ‘must-visit’ region for anyone who calls themselves a golf fanatic.
D
evon is located down on the south-east coast of England, with two coastal borders, making it a popular port of call amongst tourists from all over the UK and abroad. There is a huge list of courses to enjoy, some played on the seafront with a links-style feel to them, and others played inland set within the luscious verdant countryside of the area. TORQUAY: Situated just three miles from Torquay’s centre with its stunning marina and harbour and a short distance from picturesque St Marychurch and Babbacombe, Torquay is a golf course that offers something for everyone. It is a hugely enjoyable experience, playing in the heart of the English Riviera.

Always in great condition the lower part of the course plays through avenues of mature trees. The upper part offers spectacular views of the sea and the sweep of Tor Bay to the West, back to the Jurassic Coast to the East. The welcome in the clubhouse is always sincere. Membership is very much becoming part of a community, and that feeling extends to visitors when they come to play. THE WARREN: Squeezed between the Exe estuary and the south coast in Dawlish is the delightful and breathtaking Warren Golf Club. 18 holes of natural sand turf links golf with scenery and back drops like nowhere else in the UK. Designed by the world renowned architect James Braid, the course meanders its way out to the furthest point of the sand split, its signature hole (7th) has the Exe estuary all the way down the right and waves from the coast crashing on the left. It was voted one of the top 50 golf holes in the UK. A members club who work in partnership with the Devon Wildlife Trust and Natural England to keep

On course, don’t be fooled by the apparent lack of hazards – nature is the biggest protector at Thurlestone, followed closely by the slick undulating greens and strategically placed bunkering. Visitors are welcomed throughout the week and especially at weekends.

ROYAL NORTH DEVON: Royal North Devon Golf Club was founded in 1864, and is the oldest golf course in England. The course stretches out to over 7,000 yards from the championship tees (used for the West of England Championship –
one of the top amateur events in the calendar), although most will agree that it’s a suitably stiff test at 6,650 yards, especially when the wind blows. MEET YOUR HERO AT THE 2017 RUGBY LEGENDS GOLF CLASSIC
I
t doesn’t happen often but when you know it’s about to, the apprehension is natural. What will they be like in person? I hope I don’t put my foot in it. Then throw into the mix the fact that this meeting would take place over 18 holes, on one of England’s better golf courses and you also have simple worries like getting the opening tee shot passed the ladies’ tee. Even as a 43-year-old, 8 handicap golfer, who grew up watching the great England rugby teams of the 90’s, these feelings were very real when teeing off with Jeremy Guscott, the silky smooth centre who seemed to ghost past his opposite number and Peter Winterbottom, the hard-as-nails flanker who would tackle a truck if he had to. England Rugby Legends in every sense. The great thing about Rugby and its players, is that by and large they are very normal, down to earth guys – especially those from the amateur era. Yes, they are probably bigger than you and more talented and have travelled the world but this was often alongside holding down a ‘real job’ and certainly in retirement they have much of the same daily gripes as the rest of us. The nature of rugby teams also means that if anyone got above their station, their team mates will soon let them know about it, making them are easy
to talk to, share a beer with, or indeed a game of golf. And that is the beauty of golf. Firstly, it is a great leveller. Once you’ve seen one of your heroes hit it into the trees you can’t help feeling better about yourself! Secondly there is ample time for a bit of chat, reminiscing, banter. We were all square coming down the 18th and a
certain legend faced a crucial second shot, which went straight left into the bushes, a lost ball. “Years of elite level sport and mental toughness count for nothing in golf ” he japed.

As solid a test for a par three as you will play, the 12th hole at 228 yards off the back tee’s is uphill with fantastic views. From the 13th onwards, the course turns seaward, plummeting and swooping across glorious links terrain. ne of the most desired addresses in Europe, Quinta do Lago is a unique destination where magnificent golf courses and grand villas blend with green umbrella pines, the tranquility of lakes, the beauty of sandy beaches and the wildlife from the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Quinta do Lago also boasts one of the finest practice facilities in Europe. With its state-of-the-art driving range, Paul McGinley Academy and TaylorMade Custom Fitting Centre providing the ultimate practice experience.
THE NORTH COURSE Length 6776 Par 72 The North Course is the newest addition to Quinta do Lago’s five-star golf facilities and is set to be one of the new stars of European golf and the new number one course at Quinta do Lago. Redesigned by renowned American architect Beau Welling in close collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, the new layout has been built to the highest specifications with a €9.6m investment. Greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage systems and cart paths have been rebuilt using state-ofthe-art technology. Four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels and golfers will be challenged by a combination of undulating greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards. A low-cut Bermuda grass approach has been introduced around greens to create a myriad of recovery shot

THE SOUTH COURSE Length 6500 Par 72 The jewel in the Quinta do Lago crown, the South Course has played host to the Portuguese Open eight times. Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, who raised the bar by introducing American-standard greens, tees and bunkers to the Algarve, it soon gained a reputation as one of the foremost courses in Europe and remains to this day one of the flagship European Tour Courses. The favourite course of many European tour players, set amongst umbrella pines, lakes and wild flowers, overlooking the spectacular scenery of the Ria Formosa National Park. Its championship status does not deter the amateur golfer. Indeed, while the 8th, 15th, and 18th are testing holes for low handicap players, the course provides interest and challenge to golfers of all levels and abilities. Accurate tee shots are essential to reach many of the greens in regulation and the course is made more challenging by a good variety of doglegs and strategically located hazards. The front nine holes, which wind their way through parkland, favour a draw, while the back nine, which loop around the lake, favour a fade from the tee.

LARANJAL Length 6480 Par 72 Originally an orange grove, this beautiful championship course is situated in the Ludo valley, just 2km east of the resort. Boasting some spectacular fairways and well-defined greens, Laranjal is renowned for its five beautiful lakes and its abundance of umbrella pines, cork and orange trees. The course is challenging and demands the highest levels of concentration and accuracy. Its distinctive rolling terrain has been expertly designed and manicured to provide a world class golfing experience. Comprising five par 5s, eight par 4s and five par 3s, the course is

Tried and tested – great to look at and a good feel. If you are used to a more traditional waterproof winter jacket, you may be apprehensive of purchasing what looks like a thicker option in case it inhibits the golf swing, but don’t be! It’s lightweight and thin enough to enable you to swing freely whilst providing a heavy weight warmth. EDEL PUTTER REVIEW Edel Golf is dedicated to providing the most innovative, highest quality and best performing products in the Golf Industry.
E
del putters are custom designed to ensure proper aim and speed control. The idea behind it is based on research that has shown that a high percentage of tour players cannot consistently align their putter to the hole from 10 feet. Do you know where you are aiming? Edel Golf ’s industry leading putter fitting system offers players the unique ability to create a putter that is precisely fitted to every aspect of their putting stroke.
AIM Your aim is tested with a 6ft putt to gauge how you visualise and aim, then trialling different head shapes, hosels and lines on the putter to get you aiming dead centre of the hole every time.

With 22million possible variations available, the fitting will find the best set up available to you.
SPEED CONTROL From 10-12 feet away you hit putts to get the ball to stop at desired points. The fitter is able to fine tune the putter with weights in different positions, enabling a pace control that becomes easy and repeatable. Once you are aiming correctly and controlling speed with the model selected, your putter is ordered – to be hand made for you in Austin Texas.

WHAT WE THOUGHT
MOTOCADDY DRY-SERIES BAG 100% waterproof cart bag, the DrySeries model is the brands most technical yet, with a durable 2000mm-coated waterproof fabric, heat-welded seams and thermo-sealed nylon-coated zips that have been put through rigorous testing to ensure that the contents of the bag remain dry. Super-lightweight at only 2.3kg and offers a host of other features, including 14 full-length dividers, waterproof rain hood, upper and lower grab handles, a dry valuables compartment and insulated cooler pocket. The bag also features seven spacious pockets, including two significantly enlarged apparel pockets that boast 20% wider zip openings for even easier access to waterproofs and equipment. Available in Black/Red, Black/Blue, Black/Lime and Black/ Orange options. RRP £179.99
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
We trialled the bag and trolley at Purley Downs Golf Club, a hilly course and a wet day made for the perfect test. Out the car and with the QUIKFOLD assembly mechanism the trolley is rapidly up and ready for action. The ease in which the bag and trolley connect thanks to the EASILOCK™ bag connection system is outstanding, no fiddly straps to deal with at the bottom of the bag (a problem my older trolley had with the strap stretched out over time). On the course, it was a winner. It runs with ease, lightweight and incredibly quiet. Thanks to the electronic parking system there was no need for angle parking with this one. It stays exactly where you put it. A great feature, that some other brands lack. The downhill control built into the single motor means the trolley remains precise and in control on the hills. My clubs stayed completely dry within the bag with no signs of vulnerable areas. With lots of pockets you can easily fit the full winter kit on board. A ‘must have’ perfect partnership.
