new name has appeared at the top of the PGA South’s leaderboard, as Royal Mid-Surrey’s Oscar GranstromLivesey shot an untouchable threeunder-par 66* to win the Royal MidSurrey 125th Anniversary Pro-Am. The 23 year old Royal Mid-Surrey based PGA Assistant Professional was over the moon about securing his first win in his chosen career, saying: “I’m so happy about this, especially as the club has done so much to support me in my chosen career with The PGA. I’d also like to thank PGA Head Professional Mathew Paget for all his advice and guidance as well, as he was the one who set me up with the opportunity to become a professional golfer.” Winning by two strokes and taking home the £800 cheque, GranstromLivesey, who is just at the end of this first year of PGA Training, celebrated his home club’s 125th Anniversary year in style. He fended off one of the leading southern stars, Lee-onthe-Solent’s James Ablett, along with Tilgate Forest’s Lea Cooper and

Hayling’s Mark Treleaven, all of whom could do no better than 68. Starting at the 12th, GranstromLivesey’s birdie at the 14th was offset by a dropped shot at the first, but he bounced straight back with two on the trot through the second and third, and another on the 7th helped to take him over the finishing line on three-under-par. Of the three runners up, Treleaven came closest to matching GranstromLivesey by shooting five birdies, but four bogeys undid all the good work. As Granstrom-Livesey commented, local knowledge definitely helped:

“Obviously I’m very familiar with Royal Mid-Surrey’s Taylor course, and knowing where to play safe and where to have a go may well have made the winning difference. I’ve also been able to play in a dozen or so Euro Pro events this year, and that’s really helped to improve my game.” The Royal Mid-Surrey result has helped southern star Ablett to close up on his rival, The PGA in England (South) Money List leader Richard Wallis (Canterbury), but there are plenty of opportunities for the leaderboard to change dramatically.

GAVIN’S RETURN CREATES NEW ATMOSPHERE AT OAK PARK One of the UK’s most successful golf coaches has returned to Oak Park Golf Club to head an all-new management team, pledging to restore its reputation as one of the south’s most popular and welcoming golf clubs.

G

avin Grenville-Wood is the new General Manager at Oak Park, a secluded and tree-lined 27-hole golf club close to the Surrey/Hampshire border in the village of Crondall, near Farnham. Along with Oak Park’s new Course Manager Anthony Burnell and the club’s new Head Chef Mick Ogden, GrenvilleWood heads a new core management team which is already creating change at the golf club – and it’s all about the personal touch. “There is a new atmosphere here at Oak Park Golf Club” he said. “You’ll notice it in the way our staff members now interact with people, in the way we take care of the smallest details, and how the club is presented throughout your visit. I think the images on our busy Instagram account are inspirational – they show the vibrant and positive new spirit at the golf club” “This year, our members are saying that the golf courses at Oak Park are in better condition than at any point in the last 20 years” said GrenvilleWood. “So the golf is fantastic, the food is fantastic, and we’re making

8

improvements across the board. It’s a great time for people to come back to Oak Park and see all the changes we have been making” he said. Grenville-Wood spent five years at Oak Park as Academy Manager from 2008-13, setting UK records for junior golf participation with as many as 400 children receiving golf lessons there each week. Under Gavin’s influence, the club is now targeting a return to its former status as one of the country’s leading places to learn to play golf. “When you attract children to a golf club, you also attract their parents, relatives and friends” he said. “It becomes a family game, and a family environment. Our job here is not only to attract people to our sport, but also to make sure that they remain in it, loving their golf club and the friends they make here.”

Gavin Grenville-Wood left school 28 years ago to become an assistant golf pro, qualified as a PGA Professional in 1997, and has managed golf academies throughout the last 20 years. In 2002 he started a six-year spell working in the USA, teaching golf at the Palmetto Dunes Resorts in South Carolina, which led to a prestigious role as Director of Golf at the University of South Carolina. In 2008 he returned to the UK to take up his position as Academy Manager at Oak Park Golf Club where he stayed until 2013, when he and a colleague launched a new business providing web and mobile tools for golf coaches and their students – a role which took him back to the USA for a further fouryear period before his return to Oak Park in summer 2017.

TOUGH CRANLEIGH LEAVES ITS MARK ON THE PROS

Pro-am winners

Morgan Kennedy

Cranleigh Golf & Country Club proved it has got a few tricks up its sleeve to combat the power of modern golf professionals at the recent member’s pro-am.

M

easuring in at 5,644 yards – relatively short by today’s standards – the par-68 course showed its teeth as it yielded a winning score of 70 with Burhill professional Morgan Kennedy taking the honours. Although the course was in perfect condition and was played in glorious sunshine, the two-overpar round was the highest winning professional score of the season in the

10th hole

10

region, beating the previous mark of one under par at West Hill. And it underlined exactly how testing the tree-lined Surrey course is with its narrow fairways and fast greens. Precision, accuracy and course management are all under intense scrutiny throughout the round. Cranleigh head professional Karl Morgan said: “It just shows how tough our course is, even for these high-

quality pros. Morgan Kennedy played a great round of golf and was still two over par. “If you haven’t played the course before, it can really bite you and we were actually quite proud that nobody was able to break par. It’s good to see further evidence that golf is not all about how far you can hit the ball these days.” The team honours went to Ryan Whiting, Rhys Kinsella, David Rudley and Stuart Holder, with a 13-under-par total of 123. With putting competitions, regular refreshments available, raffles and auctions on offer for the 100 competitors, the event raised £4,500 for the club’s chosen charity REAdY which raises funds for young people with disabilities to play sport. Morgan said: “The day was a big success and we’ve had a few really nice comments from people telling us it was the best pro-am they have played in. “Huge thanks to everyone who contributed with their time, effort and expertise and made it such a memorable day.” www.cranleighcountryclub.co.uk T: 01483 267426

U13S PLAY FOR THE TRIPLE SHIELD

M

onday 21st August – The Surrey U13’s County Team played for the Triple Shield against teams from Sussex & Kent. This was a match that Surrey had narrowly lost to Sussex previously at Haywards Heath GC. The summer holidays always present a challenge for putting teams together for each County and this year was no different. The team this year featured 5 from the U12’s squad. The matches at all age groups (U12’s-U14’s) do seem to follow a pattern with tough tight games at the

front and Surrey coming good at the back end of the match. Tom Kelly had an early bath but was back out supporting his team, Rocky Chapman was a worthy Captain and played extremely well to deliver maximum points from the 2nd group and Hashim bravely took both his matches up the 18th to lose on the final hole against two very good opponents. Things were looking very tight with matches 5-8 seeing every Surrey player down against Kent, however the back 9 saw these swing back to Surrey in

3 of the 4 with Nathan Woodham, Aidan Millham and Kris Kim delivering maximum points against Kent & Sussex. Matches 9-12 then saw Surrey only drop 1 point from a maximum of 16 with Cameron Cridge, Skye Slijepcevic and Sam Wood getting maximum points available. Surrey only dropped 4 points from 24 against Sussex and 8 points from 24 against Kent. With all matches finished the end result was Surrey 36, Kent 23 and Sussex 13.

SURREY BOYS (BLUE DIVISION) KNOCK OUT FINAL

O

n a pleasant August afternoon the Surrey boys Blue Division Handicap Knock Out Final was played at West Byfleet Golf Club between Dexter Daly (Cuddington) and Cameron Cridge (Addington Palace). The boys were accompanied on the course by Surrey rules official Danny Lee. Despite giving shots to Dexter, Cameron got off to a terrific start winning several holes to take a firm grip on the final. Dexter got himself back into the match by first halving the 6th then winning the 7th.

12

It was game on, the 8th was shared, then Cameron won the 9th, but Dexter hit straight back winning the 10th. Although Dexter won the 11th, Cameron then took control winning the next few holes to take the final. It had been an exciting final but on the day Cameron was just too on his game for Dexter, who to his credit battled throughout. Congratulations to Cameron Cridge the Surrey Blue Division Handicap Knock Out Champion.

ENGLAND BOYS UNDER 16 OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP (The McGregor Trophy)

W

ith eight players (Joe Wood, Luke Stock, John Richardson, Ben Partridge, Shergo Kurdi, Harry Crockett, Enrique Dimayuga and Babar Haq) Surrey were well represented at the recent England Boys Under 16 Open Amateur Championship – The McGregor Trophy. Played over three days at Burnham and Berrow GC, three Surrey players made the cut for the final round. Harry Crockett eventually finished tied 32nd with Ben Partridge in 43rd. Enrique Dimayuga played some very consistent golf with rounds of 74, 71, 73 and 72 and tied for 5th place, just four shots behind the winner, a very solid performance and something he should be proud of in this very high quality field,

OCEANICO WORLD KIDS GOLF 2017

The girl’ champion was 3 handicapper Chloe Burdon of Lingfield College and the boys’ champion Enrique Dimayuga of St. Andrew’s, Leatherhead, a member of Cuddington, playing off scratch. Handicap winners were Sarah Wilmore (4) of Collingwood College, and Charlie Crockett (1) of Oxted School. The Girls’ Team trophy was won by Collingwood College and the Boys’ by St. Andrew’s. The finish of the boys’ event was spectacular. Enrique Dimayuga and Charlie Crockett, playing together, had shown in their first nine that they meant business with Enrique scoring a 4 under par 32 and Charlie only one shot behind. Charlie birdied the next three holes to move ahead but Enrique fought back and they came to the 420 yard 18th hole level at 7 under par. Here they both hit the green with short iron approaches and had similar putts for birdie.

T

he Oceanico World Kids Golf Championship was held from the 24th to 28th July at Amendoeira Golf Resort in Portugal. This event allows boys and girls, ages 7 to 18 an opportunity to showcase their skills and advance in the game. John Keane from West Byfleet Golf Club won the Under 15 event with scores of Gross 70, 71 and 78. Cavan Mallon, from Windlesham Golf Club, won the Under 18’s. Congratulations to both.

14

Charlie’s effort from 27 feet finished an agonizing six inches short. He had beaten the course record but held it for a mere minute and a half before Enrique holed his 24 footer for birdie and 8 under. Both boys are to be congratulated for magnificent golf and for a finish of which world class professionals would have been proud.

JUNIOR NEWS

When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration? I started to play golf at the age of five walking around with my dad on Sunday afternoons. I then joined Addington Palace as a Junior aged 10 and have been there ever since. My inspiration, most definitely, was Tiger Woods as he was by far the best player and the most exciting to watch, he had all the shots. Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream fourball? My favourite player is Rickie Fowler, although he hasn’t won a major yet, I just love the way he plays the game! If I could play in a dream fourball then it would be with Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. I would play with Rickie and obviously hole the winning putt on the last. 2017 has been a great year for you and what are your plans for 2018? Yes 2017 has definitely been my best year so far. As for 2018 my plans are to keep working hard with my coach on my swing and spend more time improving my short game as that is where you score! Also, to play in more National events and compete with the best players I can as often as I can. Are there specific areas of your game that you work and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have? I practice all parts of my game as during the season some areas need more attention than others. At the moment I need to put a bit more time into my chipping as that’s where I can see I am

national events by targeting top 10 finishes, to win one would be brilliant. But above all keep developing myself as a golfer and keep improving each year. Beyond 2018, I would like to represent England and play in the Walker Cup. After that my ultimate goal is to turn professional on either the European tour or the PGA tour.

What are your long term goals?

What advice would you give you young players just starting on their journey in golf?

My goals are to get into the South East England regional squad as I feel that is the first step to representing England. To improve my performances in next year’s

My advice to young developing golfers would be to concentrate on their short game. Chipping and putting well is the best way to keep your score down especially when you are not hitting the ball well. I would also tell them not to worry about how far you hit the ball but concentrate on hitting the ball straight and in the fairway, it is hard to have a low score when you are hitting out the rough or the trees. But most of all have fun and enjoy the challenge of the game. Finally, what is your favourite sports team? My favourite sports team is Crystal Palace football club as I have supported them my whole life.

LOTTIE WINS ENGLAND’S ‘MOST IMPROVED’ TITLE Surrey’s Lottie Woad played nine shots under her handicap to win the Abraham Trophy and the title of England’s most improved girl golfer.

T

he 13-year-old went round Blackmoor Golf Club, Hampshire, in a gross score of level par 72, net 63, to win by five shots. The runner-up on net 68 was Lili Rose Hunt of Gaudet Luce, Worcestershire, while Hannah Dymott (Meon Valley, Hampshire) scored net 70 and took third place on countback from four other players. They were among 22 girls who qualified for the national final on the basis of handicap reduction. Lottie, from Farnham Golf Club, started playing golf three years ago and has since been joined by her younger sister, Milly. They’ve been encouraged

by their father, Nick, who is now the club’s junior organiser. Lottie has made rapid progress with her golf and has played for the Surrey girls and won the handicap prize at the Surrey schools’ championship for the last two years. Her winning Abraham Trophy score

was her best ever, by three shots, and will bring about a healthy cut in her handicap. She started with a birdie and finished with back-to-back birdies, completing a back nine of two-under par. “I putted well,” said Lottie. “I don’t usually putt great, but today I holed lots of six-footers.”

ANNABELL BIRDIES HER WAY TO PLAY-OFF VICTORY

Annabell Fuller birdied her way to victory in a playoff against Thalia Kirby for the English U16 girls’ open championship at Blackmoor Golf Club, Hampshire.

T

he pair tied on three-under par to set up Fuller’s fifth play-off in a year – and the first one she has won. “I thought, I’m not going to lose another one,” said the 15- year-old international from Roehampton, Surrey. She wasted no time, scoring a birdie three on the first extra hole to secure the title – after she’d birdied the last two holes of regulation play to force the play-off.

Kirby made sure that Fuller had to fight for the title. The 16-year-old from Harleyford, Buckinghamshire, made all the running in this morning’s second round with a score of four-under 68, while Fuller scored 75. It meant Kirby was six-under after 36 holes, five ahead of her closest challengers and six ahead of Fuller. The gap didn’t dismay Fuller: “I thought I would just try my best and go as low as

possible,” she said. The strategy worked, after nine holes she was two-under and tied with Kirby, but after 12 she’d dropped three behind again. She picked away at the deficit with a birdie on 13 but was still two behind after 16 holes. On the short 17th she fired her tee shot straight at the pin and was rewarded with a 4ft birdie putt which she holed. On the long 18th her second shot rolled back off the green, but she chipped up stone dead, while Kirby three-putted down the treacherous slope. Fuller signed for 69, Kirby for 75 and it was on to the play-off. The victory was particularly sweet for Fuller, who tied fifth last year – with a 14 on her card in the last round. “I wanted to win, especially after last year so I came determined,” she said. She also wanted to win an age group championship to follow her sister Sammy, a fellow England international. “It’s nice to follow in her footsteps and it’s also nice to actually do it for myself. “But I wouldn’t be in the place I am right now without my sister. She’s a big motivation for me and one of the nicest things is that I can practice with her and learn from her. She’s one of the most supportive people I know.”

DRUCE TROPHY The Druce Trophy was played in glorious sunshine at Bramley Golf Club. Leatherhead GC pipped the host team Bramley by one quarter of a point to take the trophy.

S

usie Dawes, from Wimbledon Park, is our new Seniors Champion, returning a gross 77 at Worplesdon. Playing off a handicap of 5 Susie also won the Handicap Trophy In the 60+ Championship, Felicity Christine hit an 80 to be the new 60+ Champion, with Heather Korzilius winning the Handicap medal.

PING PLATE JOY FOR SURREY PAIR

Surrey golfers Helen Atkinson (left) and Tina Thomas made their dreams come true when they won the Plate Final of the PING women’s fourball betterball tournament by two points.

H

elan and Tina travelled to PING’s Gainsborough Golf Club with high hopes of winning and pulled it off when they scored 45 points on the Thonock Park course, finishing ahead of Jane Monk and Karen Cook from The Links, Newmarket. “I’m amazed and very proud,” said Tina, while Helen added: “It means such a lot, especially as we know how hard it is to get through to the final.” The tournament – which is run by England Golf – attracted entries from 16,610 women from 885 clubs and the best qualifying score was 53 points. The top 50 pairs nationwide qualified for tomorrow’s Grand Final, and the next 50 played in today’s Plate Final.

Last year, Tina and Helen, from West Hill Golf Club, qualified for the Grand Final and they decided to renew their partnership for the 2017 competition. They missed out on a Grand Final place on countback but made the most of their Plate Final opportunity. Their play dovetailed and they loved the championship experience: “It makes you feel special,” said Helen. “We’re not professionals but the treatment makes you feel like a ‘proper’ golfer.” Helen, who plays off 11, has been a golfer for eight years, while Tina, a 27-handicapper, returned to the game three years ago after an absence of 21 years, stopping when her daughter was born.

Runners up Jane Monk and Karen Cook came very close to pulling off a remarkable double – for Jane’s sister, Lynn Lambert, was the 2015 Plate winner with Marcella Tuttle, also from The Links, Newmarket. But Jane made sure it was an event to remember with her first hole in one in practice, with a six iron on the 138-yard third hole. “It was a real slam dunk,” she laughed. “We have had a really, really good time.” Karen added: “And we’ll be back!” The remaining prizes were decided on countback after the next four pairs all tied on 40 points. Third place went to Emily Faldon and Claire Watson of Broke Hill, Kent. Fourth were Anne Armitage and Erica Rigg of Elsham, Lincolnshire; fifth were Eileen McMullan and Lynda Thorpe of Richmond, Yorkshire; and sixth place went to Annie Goodchild and Sue Kreft of Northampton Golf Club. The championship finals also offer the players the chance to visit PING’s European Custom Fitting Centre and to take part in competitions. Paula Kidby (Kirton Holme, Lincolnshire) and Lynda Thorpe won the putting competition; Gail Parry (Chilwell Manor, Nottinghamshire), Clare Jones (Beeston Fields, Nottinghamshire) and Paula Ferris (Swinton Park, Lancashire) won the ‘hit your yardage’ event. Dave Fanning, marketing director for PING Europe, announced the return of the championship in 2018 and remarked: “It’s 12 years since we came up with the concept of a ladies’ championship which was inclusive of all standards of golfer. Ladies’ golf is at the heart of the Solheim family and we are really keen to support it and see it grow.”

CONGRATULATIONS.... Congratulations to the Junior Team who took the South Region Junior Title after three days of tough matches at Royal Winchester Golf Club. The icing on the cake was that they also won the Stableford Competition that runs alongside the main Championship. All the girls played their part, but praise in particularly to

22

Sarah Wilmore, the Captain. who remained undefeated through the four matches, grinding out a half from two down with three to play on the final day, to ensure Surrey couldn’t lose to Sussex; and then to Rafiah Banday the youngest team member, who, for the second time in the week had to make a putt on the 18th for a half, which won the match against Sussex.

n the player categories there were two clear winners. The voting public reflected on some fantastic performances from Tommy Fleetwood that have seen him climb to the top of the Race to Dubai rankings off the back of two European Tour wins and 4th place in the U.S. Open. The Southport born world No.16 was a clear winner, taking the lion’s share of the vote ahead of fan favourite Andrew Johnstone. In the ladies category Georgia Hall was named as 2017 Player of the Year. 2017 has seen Georgia climb to No.3 on the Ladies European Tour order of merit, showing incredible consistency to record three top 5 finishes including 4th at the Ricoh Women’s British Open. One of the best received awards of the night was the American Golf Game Changer Award. PGA Master Professional Alasdair Barr was recognised for his continuing dedication to the development of the game of golf worldwide along with his work with Services charity On Course Foundation. Barr has worked with the R&A and PGA, taking golf to some of the most

disadvantaged communities in the world, giving insight to new golfers and passing on skills to coaches in their home countries. Another PGA member to gain recognition was Jon Earl who won PGA Professional of the Year for his work at Ified Golf Club. Having progressed through the junior ranks at Ifield, Jon took the role of Head Professional at the age of 25. Over 20 years later he is still there and was described by numerous members in their nominations as the heartbeat of the club. His work

with Juniors, Ladies and the general development of the club was praised as above and beyond that which should be expected and his service to Ifield recognised by members as outstanding. Away from the people honoured, PING was the big winner of the night with their award for Brand of the Year. The voting public recognised a year in which Ping have consistently delivered products that have helped the U.K. golfing public improve their game and get more enjoyment from their golf. Another brand celebrating was Arccos for their Most Innovative Product of the Year – Arccos Caddie – with the virtual caddie being recognised above several strong contenders in a fantastic year for innovation. Finally, Golf Facility of the year went to 3 Hammers Golf Complex in Wolverhampton. The pioneering venue, which combines state of the art practice facilities, 18 hole short course and nationally recognised golf academy programmes pipped Boomers & Swingers from Manchester to the honours in this inaugural year.

JAMES GUNNING I became a PGA Professional in 2000. Working in golf you get to meet a variety of people and I really enjoy the atmosphere of being in a golf club environment. As a coach, you never stop learning which I think is vital for anyone. It is a very rewarding job, especially when you see a golfer achieving their goals. I have been lucky enough to coach some very talented players through the years including David Boote and Ben Taylor, both of whom have gone on to become great golfers.

COURSE MANAGEMENT with Lauren Blease Golf isn’t just about hitting a ball, there are many different elements, especially when you are out on the course. I have seen so many times the amateurs I play with in pro am’s mess up a hole because of poor course management rather than hitting bad shots. Even when you hit a bad shot the aim is to get yourself out of trouble safely and not compound the error with another error.

T

o help with course management on the golf course, there are some steps you can follow and questions you must ask yourself: Can you get to the green? Answer. Yes ● Check the wind  I nto wind: hit an extra club, possibly two if it’s strong D own wind: take one less club but make sure that you still commit fully to the shot ● Choose your club ●P ick your target – here you must be smart and know your own capabilities. If the pin is tucked in the corner of the green and you have a long iron in your hand then the safest play is to hit the ball to the centre of the green ●G o through your pre-shot routine of doing a practise swing and lining yourself up ● Th en stand over the shot, clear your mind of any thoughts and commit to the target you’ve chosen and hit the ball 32

Answer. No ●Y ou must hit a shot that will get you out of trouble in the most stress free way and enable you to hit the green with your next shot ● Th is may sometimes require you to hit your shot sideways or even backwards ●O nce you have chosen the shot you are going to play you then follow the same steps as if you could hit the green:  Check the wind  Choose your club  Pick your target  Pre-shot routine  Commit to the shot

scores. You have to know your own capabilities and ability level and play to your strengths and never play a shot that you haven’t practised already.

Some really good advice that I was once given was that you should never hit a shot if your heart rate is raised. That means if you are very stressed about hitting a shot then you need to reassess your plan and pick a shot that is easier and more within your capabilities. Playing within yourself is a hard thing to do but it is vital in order for you to lower your

One shot that is really useful to hit is a low punch shot from out of the trees. When hitting this shot you will probably be using a 7 iron or 5 iron depending on how far you need to hit it and the type of lie that you have. This is because these clubs have a straighter clubface than a PW so will help to keep the ball low. To hit this shot you should:

I see it so often that club golfers will only ever play in counting competitions and matches and will rarely just go on the course just for practise. This is vital to aid improvement as when you are out on the course practising you are able to try shots that you couldn’t on a range or when in a competition. The next time you are going down to the club to practise, go on the course and put yourself in various situations and try out different clubs and shots that you haven’t hit before.

PUNCH SHOT

● Have the ball at the back of your stance ● Hands forward pressed and ahead of the clubface ● Always keep your hands in front of the clubface through impact ● Keep the club low to the ground ● Don’t take a big swing, just hip height to hip height SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

● Have the feeling of a short, sharp punch shot ● Keep accelerating through the shot and don’t stop on it The main aim of golf is to hit the ball as few times as possible in 18 holes. In order to do this, not only do you need to hit good shots but you also

need to play smart and have a strategy for every hole that you are going to play. So the next time you are playing in a competition, don’t always go for the hero shot but play smart and reduce your risk. Happy golfing! 33

EPSOM GOLF CLUB

WHERE THE VIEWS, AS WELL AS THE GOLF, ARE STUNNING Epsom Golf Club has a reputation for being one of the friendliest private members clubs in Surrey, providing a challenging test of golf since it was founded in 1889.

O

ne of the club’s founding Vice Presidents was the Earl of Rosebery, later to become Prime Minister of Britain and over the years the golf course has witnessed many great players, including four Open Golf Champions. Epsom is not however a club stuck in the past, and a round here is as enjoyable as it has ever been, the excellent condition of the course being fundamental and of the utmost importance to the club and its members. At 5,780 yards the 18 hole course is not long by modern standards, however being situated on the Downs it presents a wide variety of challenging traditional downland holes, each one abundant with character and an excellent test for golfers of all abilities, requiring an entire repertoire of shots. The year-round greens, which have become legendary in the area, are consistent and very true, offering a very demanding test because of their mixture of surprising speed and undulation.

34

Views from the course are stunning, including London’s iconic skyline from the par 4 Signature 6th hole. The course consists of 2 par 5’s, 12 par 4’s and 4 par 3’s. Some fairways are narrow and require good accuracy and on some holes the wind can be strong, which needs factoring in to the shot. Being located on the chalk Downs the drainage is fantastic, allowing for excellent year-round conditions, often being open in winter when other local courses are closed. The current course investment plan includes the redesign of the 1st tee, lengthening it from a par 3 to par 4, the installation of new pathways and numerous tee box improvements. The level of effort and skill required to maintain and improve the course is immense, and with the appointment of a new head greenkeeper and a new fleet of machinery to the value of £80k the standards of the course continue to improve. Whilst being a club that embraces

golfs traditional values and having a heritage to be proud of, it also recognises the necessity for improvements. As part of the modernisation plan, the club has invested in a new responsive designed website with an on-line tee booking system and the club’s facilities have been greatly enhanced with the addition of a GC2 golf simulator in the indoor coaching studio.

THE CLUBHOUSE A warm welcome awaits members and visitors alike in the clubhouse. Epsom’s was the first purpose-built clubhouse in Surrey, completed in 1893, four years after the club was founded and remains as an architectural icon to this day, albeit with numerous improvements and extensions, including a snooker auditorium built in 1913, which houses a 200-year-old Victorian snooker table, used to host exhibition events. The main lounge, with its own bar, and the upstairs traditional wooden beamed dining room both offer picturesque views of the 18th fairway and green, perfect for a relaxing drink and bite to eat. The 19th is a relaxed bar, ideally suited to golfers wanting a quick drink or snack prior to heading out to play or after returning from a round.

THE ACADEMY The Academy is a thriving section of the club. It’s a great way to meet other golfers, and with access to a solid foundation of PGA coaching and on-course play it provides a great stepping stone to join as a full member.

Epsom is a social, inclusive club in every respect. There is as much golf as members can handle, with a mixture of social and traditional inter-club fixtures, representing the club in matches against other clubs, as well as charity golf days and one of Surrey’s most popular Pro-am’s. All sections of the club, from juniors to seniors, enjoy weekly roll-ups, ladies meet weekly on Tuesday mornings, business ladies on

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

Saturday whilst men meet on Sunday mornings. Additionally, members enjoy reciprocal arrangements with over 35 golf clubs, many free including Littlehampton GC. The club recognises the need to offer a variety of membership options, the most popular being either sevenor five-day categories available to men and women. Intermediate memberships have discounted rates for younger members, ranging from 18-33 years and Epsom is very popular with young golfers – our junior members. The club was one of the first in Surrey to gain GolfMark accreditation, helping it to attract funding from golfing bodies for junior golf. If you want to try the club before committing to a full membership there is a unique membership called Pathway which includes the same privileges as a full seven-day member, allowing golfers to experience the club for three months before joining.

The clubhouse can host private and corporate functions for up to 100 guests, looked after by an experienced team. There are many social events held at the club, including themed evenings, dinner dances, casual events and dinner jacket occasions, as well as the Sunday carvery, which are organised for the members, their family and friends to enjoy.

golf trip to Scotland is also the perfect opportunity to see some of the world’s most prestigious tournaments being played out. Scotland regularly hosts The Open Championship and the Ricoh Women’s British Open, amongst many, many others. The first record of golf in Scotland dates from the 15th century (back then it was known as ‘gowf ’). In 1764 the Links at St Andrews (now known as the Old Course) was reduced from 22 holes to 18, creating the standard course format we still use today, and in 1860 the first Open Championship was held at Prestwick – an illustrious history indeed! Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, amongst scores of other top golfers, have all played here and many of Scotland’s most prestigious courses were designed by golfing legends. ‘Old’ Tom Morris designed the Old and New Courses at St Andrews while James Braid is responsible for more than 250 British courses, including the world-famous King’s and Queen’s Courses at Gleneagles. There’s evidence of human habitation on this spot that dates back to 900 BC, and the Castle has been a royal stronghold since the Middle Ages. www.edinburghcastle.gov.uk LOCH NESS This beautiful loch is shrouded in mystery, all thanks to a long, thin green creature that circles the deep waters occasionally raising her head above the water for a picture. If you’re looking for peaceful walks, perfect picnics or just sheer natural beauty, Loch Ness is the perfect spot. This corner of the Highlands is worldfamous for its dramatic scenery, with nearby castles and solitary lighthouses dotting the landscape. www.lochness.com GALLOWAY WILDLIFE CONSERVATION PARK Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park has a fantastic collection of native and exotic animals amongst 27 acres of mixed woodland. Undulating greens, glorious fairways and stunning ocean holes with views of the Kintyre, Arran and the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse; this is links golf at its exhilarating best. Length: 6,921 Par: 72 CARNOUSTIE GOLF LINKS: There are many who believe that the championship course at Carnoustie is the finest test of championship golf to be found anywhere the game is played. Allan Robertson, the first player to break 80 around the Old Course at St Andrews and now recognised as the games first professional golfer, was the man who laid out the original course back in the middle of the 19th century but inevitably it was five-times Open Champion James Braid who was called in to revamp the course in 1926. There can be no finer tribute to this remarkable Angus links than the role of champions who have won there. Tommy Armour, Sir Henry Cotton, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Paul Lawrie and of course the legendary Ben Hogan who won the only Open Championship he ever played in at Carnoustie in 1953. wider audience around the world than it already is. At the Balgownie links only a mile from the centre of the city of Aberdeen, is history indeed, a club founded as the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen in 1780 and one of the most testing and spectacular of all the great links courses of Scotland. The present club incorporated the Society on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and brought with it the old ballot box bearing the 1780 date and the presidents chair dated three years earlier. Todays spectacular layout that winds its way between the great sand hills with many elevated tees and panoramic views is once again largely from the imagination and genius of James Braid. Royal Aberdeen has several claims to fame not the least of them that it was here in 1783 that the rule that allows only five minutes to look for a lost golf ball was established. CALIFORNIA

DREAMIN’ & GOLFIN’ Words and Pictures by Charles & Linda Briscoe-Knight

T

here is a true links at Pacific Grove – oft called the ‘Poor Mans Pebble Beach’ – the description is a bit off the beam, as it has 9 holes of parkland overlooking the bay towards Monterey, and 9 holes of true sandy natural links. On a windy day with the sun shining brightly, the waves crashing across the road (the start of the famous ‘17 Mile Drive’) there can be no better place to golf your ball. Don’t be distracted by the sight of the whales passing by or the noise of the seals calling to their mate! It might not be a long course, but the tight nature of the front nine and windy stretch of links make for some tricky scoring.

46

Probably the best value for money in America. Top billing on the actual peninsular of Monterey, is Poppy Hills. For many years this public access course – home to the Northern California Golf Association – was one of the three courses played during the famous AT&T PGA Tour event. All the big names in world golf have walked these fairways, from Tiger and Jack to Nick and GMac. Heavily tree lined, this writer on his first visit to the re-designed course (Trent Jones Jr) saw shades of Augusta National in its layout and feel. The first hole sets the tone. A drive slightly uphill, with a

Many of us golfers think if you go to the area around Monterey and it’s fabulous Peninsular, you will be disappointed if you can’t or don’t play Pebble Beach or even Cypress Point! For the former, you’ll need a second mortgage... for the latter you’ll need ‘God’s Invite’ to be hosted by a member or your dream will be dead in the water. Whilst the 2019 US Open is slated for the most iconic links in America, Pebble Beach is by no means the only high quality course you can play in this wondrous area of California. Many others are clubs with public access and affordable green fees. Del Monte Poppy Hills

big hit disappearing over the horizon, sets up a long attempt to hit a green raised slightly, beyond a small lake and severe slopes all around the fringes. For the mere mortal golfer it’s a good opportunity for a starting birdie, but a par is more likely. The next a short par three, has to be a serious contender for the best short par three anywhere. Mounded left with bunkers all around an undulating green which slopes off to the right. So, so difficult to hit and hold. Par is excellent. From the clubhouse balcony, views across the 9th, 18th and over to the 16th are splendid – as too are the beers and food on offer inside!

Pebble’s sister course, owned by the same people, is called Del Monte and has seen plenty of tour action over the years and recently the Champions Tour have run events here. A parkland course, on relatively flat terrain, just on the outskirts of Monterey, has a testing examination of all your clubs, but driving it into position ‘A’ off the tee has major rewards. With no driving range practice facility many locals warm up next door at Monterey Pines GC. Which is owned by the Navy and is an inexpensive option. the flight path of the airport, players can wave to celebrities arriving in their executive jets, to go play at Clint Eastwood’s home course at Tehama! Tucked away in a valley near the famous Laguna Seca race track (Moto GP and IndyCar racing venue) is the golf club by the same name. A Robert Trent Jones course – a stunning public course with huge variety in the design of the holes. A visitor matching his or her handicap first time out will have played really well. The notable test is the 15th – a double dogleg par five with water in play twice. The maestro designer excelled with this gem. The jewel in the crown of these (if you will) unheralded courses, is undoubtedly Bayonet Blackhorse. Built on the army base at Fort Ord five miles from Fishermans Wharf, the two courses were totally revamped when the military left the area and the city council took them over. Gene Bates – once a partner with Freddie Couples, in his design business – came in to produce two courses that are so good they could easily host a US Open – if it were not for the fact that Pebble is 30 minutes down the freeway. So good are they, that US Open sectional qualifying has been held here; the 2015 Senior PGA Professional Championship... and in 2018 the biggest ‘professional’ event in the USA – the PGA Professional Championship will be contested over both courses. Bates has delivered to the Monterey golfing fraternity 36 holes of sheer magic. There is not a weak hole to be found. If we have a

48

favourite it could be the ...humm, well there are so many good holes we can’t decide! But the two closing 18th holes are pretty special. If you decide to go up north to wine country, east of San Francisco try the exhilarating Vente Vineyards course, in Livermore, where Greg Norman has sculpted a delightful 18 holes of sporting magnificence, meandering around the vineyards perched on copious hillsides surrounding the clubhouse and tasting rooms. Poppy Ridge is the sister club to Poppy Hills and thus a NCGA course. Just outside Livermore it has three nines and are all designed with an appeal to both the pro and the hacker. Choose your tee wisely, there’s no point in trying to be Dustin when you are really a Dustbin. Sorry, but in truth you know what I mean. A 490 yard par four is easy fodder for said Mr. Johnson, but for me no! The menu post-round is wonderful, as are the wines on offer. Apart from the delights of golf in the Peninsular, many visit for the beaches, the walking, the world famous drive down Big Sur on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) the whale watching, the best aquarium in the States – on Cannery Row, and of course the Monarch butterfly assembly in Pacific Grove. The restaurants all over the region are quite definitely world class. Our favourites were the SandBar on the Monterey Wharf and the Old Fishermans Grotto on Fishermans Wharf. Make birdies, eat well and have a cocktail on the beach as the sun sets over the Pacific – bliss!

MALLORCA Blessed with year-round sunshine, refreshing sea breezes and incredible views, the beautiful Mediterranean island of Mallorca really is the perfect place for golf.

ith over 300 days of sunshine a year and mild winters, Mallorca is a paradise for golfers – there are 20 courses to choose from and the climate, as well as the island‘s terrain, makes it a prime location for some of the finest European golf resorts – Alcanada and Son Gual have recently been ranked amongst the best in Europe. CLUB DE GOLF ALCANADA: Designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, Club de Golf Alcanada’s 18-hole course opened in 2003. Situated in the northern part of the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Alcanada is located right by the sea and the 6,499-metre lay-out blends naturally into the typical Mallorcan landscape. The club takes its name from a nearby island just off the shore which, complete with its own lighthouse, can be seen from most of the holes. Apart from the splendid sea view, players are surrounded by pine and olive groves throughout their round and, even though a young course, Alcanada is already recognised by a number of well known golf

magazines and golf guides as one of the finest courses in Spain and Europe. A par 72 course, it features 58 well placed green side and fairway bunkers. Challenging greens with hidden breaks and difficult but fair tee shots, make this course a must for all experienced golfers travelling to Mallorca. With the clubhouse housed in an authentic Mallorcan mansion that also has an acclaimed restaurant, Alcanada comes highly recommended by all those who play it – a winning combination of challenging golf in beautiful surroundings. GOLF SON GUAL – The Golf Course in the Heart of Mallorca – a private, family-run members‘ golf club, set in 156 hectares of beautiful Mediterranean landscape. Guests are welcomed warmly, but are asked to respect the club’s etiquette rules, thereby ensuring the safeguarding of the course’s superb allyear-round quality. Son Gual prides itself on catering for all requirements and providing the highest standards to its members and guests with nothing left to chance. The course was designed by Thomas

Himmel and opened in 2007. The spaciously-designed course stands for sporting and natural elegance, and was created for golf in the nearunspoilt style of a links course. It’s a challenging course, with carefully positioned bunkers, plenty of water hazards and undulating greens. The surrounding countryside consists of vineyards, lakes and well tended flowering fields.

CHERVÒ’S ARCTIC

INSPIRATION

The Arctic is a unique and diverse landscape that plays a vital role towards the ecology of the entire planet – and it is this remarkable winter wonderland that is the inspiration for Chervò’s stunning Autumn/Winter 17/18 collection.

T

he top Italian golf and leisure brand, already a market leader in a host of countries across Europe and Asia, is set for even more accolades thanks to its latest top-of-the-range, technological-advanced clothing. Chervò has painstakingly explored the wild and breath-taking snow-covered world of the Arctic, capturing its balance, colour and shades for the AW 17/18 collection, to further its burgeoning reputation in the UK golf market. The Verona-based luxury golf and leisure brand may be a relative newcomer to these shores but its Italian chic designs have quietly seen

52

it become a leading name across the rest of the continent as well as Asia since its inception in 1982 by brothers Manfred and Peter Erlacher. As well as innovative and creative collections, Chervò is also recognised for its state-of-the-art technologies and performance materials which offer the ultimate comfort and premium quality that many of its peers simply cannot match. For the AW 17/18 collection, Chervò uses Sun-Block, Aqua-Block, WindLock and Dry-Matic fabrics, all of which are suited to any weather conditions, while also boasting the ‘Happy Goose’ 100 per cent animal-free down, which was created to cater for those customers who do not want to wear a product containing animal down. Its innovative Comfort 2 and 4-way stretch is a popular method used in 90 per cent of its garments, combining cutting-edge fabrics with the addition of elastane yarn to ensure complete unrestricted movement. Part of the new entries in the AW 17/18 collection is the men’s ProTherm all-weather jacket with semi detachable sleeves, as well as the versatile three-in-one wind-lock jackets that have incorporated the use of a lighter and stretchier fabric for improved high-activity performance. This creative collection again follows Chervò’s past traditions of being evenly split between men’s and ladies’ ranges of clothing, while again providing a wide range of vibrant colours, including the new ‘Borealis

Sunrise’, Frozen Pastels’ and Ice Flowers’ colour themes for ladies, and ‘Borealis Lights’, ‘Cold Tundra’ and ‘Art and Arctic’ themes for men. Peter Erlacher, the co-founder of Chervò, said: “Out in the wild and breath-taking world of the Arctic, we found a perfect harmony and balance between the colours, shades and shapes, and we tried to capture these natural wonders for our new collection.”

BOUNCE & GRIND

TECHNOLOGY

Edel Wedges are designed and manufactured from the ground up. A proper bounce and sole configuration makes the hand-ground wedges perform where it matters most; at impact.

W

orking with Hall of Fame PGA instructor, Mike Adams, Edel have designed their wedges to have the proper bounce and sole configuration to match your swing. The role of bounce is to offset a golfers forward shaft lean and the angle of attack at impact to minimise the effects of soil and turf conditions. Having the optimal bounce

angle combined with the correct sole width on your wedge will result in less face twisting, more consistent clubhead speeds, increased spin, and consistent control of distances; drastically improving your shortgame. All Edel Wedges are hand-ground to specific weight, grind, bounce, sole-width, and optimal trail relief in our workshop in Liberty Hill, TX. Available in lofts 45°- 65°.

REVIEW

CUSTOM FITTING

TECHNOLOGY

Edel have created the most comprehensive wedge fitting process in the golf industry to enable their highly skilled and trained Certified Fitters to find the best possible wedge make-up for your shortgame. Using a combination of 8 specific grinds and sole options; along with our proprietary zero-obstruction hosel adapter they can interchange over 30 shafts into each grind to determine your optimal wedge characteristics.

EXTENDED GROOVES Edel Wedges are designed to create more consistent shot making by incorporating industry first enhancements to the club face. They have moved and expanded the center of percussion (sweet spot) of the wedges toward the toe in comparison to most traditional clubs, and away from the hosel. Edel have extended the groove pattern on the face of the club all the way towards the toe. This allows you to better frame the golf ball at address and allows for more consistent ball to groove contact on open-face shots.

ROUNDED LEADING EDGE A slightly rounded leading edge allows the club face to sit close to the ground while maintaining the proper bounce angle. This feature allows opening and closing the clubface for different shots and lies while still keeping the leading edge square to target. SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

SHORTENED HOSEL Shortened Hosel – To obtain an ideal center of gravity in the wedges you need to move some weight around. Edel have shortened the length of the hosel to move that weight towards the toe to obtain a center-of- gravity that is in the true center of the face. This allows for all of the centers to be in the same location, the sweet spot, for the most solid feeling and best performing wedge available today. • center-of-clubface • center-of-gravity • center-of-percussion

During the process the Certified Fitters will make the following evaluations to make sure you will have the best possible custom-fit wedges to improve your game. • Angle-of-Attack • Shaft Lean at impact • Launch Angle • Divot Pattern • Desired Spin • Swing-Weight • Complete set makeup • Loft gaps • Typical shot types • Length and Lie • Typical playing conditions

AGGRESSIVE HEEL RELIEF Removal of excess material from the heel of the club results in a narrower and sharper hosel. This feature allows the clubhead to move through rough and sand without twisting of the face through impact.

Edel Golf pride themselves on the development of their fitting system to find you the perfect set of wedges. Constantly innovating the process and continuing to educate the Certified Fitters allows Edel to make you wedges that will stay in your bag for seasons to come.
