BRODIE ACHIEVES THE LEVEL OPEN DAYS AT CHIPSTEAD! 4 PGA QUALIFICATION

T

G

reg Brodie, has just become one of the first coaches in the UK to achieve the Level 4 PGA coaching qualification. With six others from across the UK, he notched up the achievement while combining busy day to day roles and it reflects the ever increasing coaching standards among PGA pros who fulfil a range of coaching commitments from grass roots through to European Tour and world level. The PGA launched the UKCC (United Kingdom Coaching Certificate) endorsed qualification in conjunction with the University of Birmingham aimed at developing coaching expertise

and specialist knowledge and skills. Reflecting on the experience, the seven all described it as a highlight and had further fuelled their passion for coaching. Brodie, a PGA Advanced Professional who is also a county coach with Surrey Ladies and U17boys, described it as a wonderful experience. “I’ve been coaching for 15 years and was already extremely passionate about coaching but this has definitely enthused and excited me,” he said. “The process has enabled me to underpin the work that I have been doing at the coalface with theory. It has helped me make sense of my world.”

he US Masters which starts on the 7th April is always recognised as the event that kick starts the golfing season for most Clubs around the country. This year Chipstead Golf Club has decided to give golfers the opportunity to play 18 holes for only £10.00 on Sunday 10th and Sunday 17th April. Director of Golf Gary Torbett said “All golfers get excited when the Masters comes around so it seemed to be the perfect time for us to hold our annual Open Days. The course at Chipstead has seen many changes over the winter months under the guidance of our new course manager Sam Bethell and I’m confident that with some decent weather the course will be in great condition for all those who attend”. There will be some great membership and green fee offers available on both days so book your place now by calling Gary or Nic on 01737-554939 or email directorofgolf@chipsteadgolf.co.uk

G

atton Manor will be welcoming back the professionals competing in the Jamega Tour this Summer. On Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th July this popular Surrey club, located just outside Dorking, will play host to a two day event. ‘“Gatton Manor is an outstanding golf course set in mature woodland and one of the most beautiful settings that the Tour visits” said Paul Fairminer, GM of Gatton Manor “Accuracy and distance from the tee and a steady nerve with the putter will be required to score well. The Pros will find it a true challenge from the back tees” Now in its 12th year the Jamega tour prides it’s self on offering aspiring professionals from across the South the right grounding and experience to benefit future European Tour Players.

Although living in Kent, our ‘bi-annual’ golf society has moved to Bletchingley for the past couple of years and will continue to remain there for the foreseeable future. My group has found the organisation, venue, course (in all weathers) and food all first rate and far superior to other courses we have used. The course has numerous signature holes which just makes for a great day’s golf. Bletchingley is now my personal course of choice and I would recommend it to anyone who has yet to try it out... AMATEUR SURREY GOLFERS WIN PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL TITLE IN MOROCCO FINAL A pair of amateur golfers from Pyrford GC beat off the challenge of five other duos to secure the prestigious national pairs title at the grand final of the Morocco Matchplay

ortgage broker John Hennessy, 53, from Walton on Thames, who plays off a handicap of three, and his 49-year-old club-mate Peter Smart, a property developer from Cobham who plays off nine, won all of their matches to deservedly take the title at the five-star Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa Hotel, in the grand final of a competition whose qualifying rounds stretched back to last summer. Smart said: “It’s been fantastic, a great week. Everybody’s been really friendly. We played really well this week and won all four of our matches. The key to our success has been our short game. We’re not the biggest hitters, by any means, but we’ve putted and chipped well. “It’s been a fabulous experience and we’ve had a great time. Everybody we’ve met has been fantastic - we’ve played father and sons every day, which is unusual. And the tournament’s been very well organised.” Hennessy added: “Pete played really well in the final, holing putts from everywhere. The difficulty with this course is the greens - you have to read

8

them correctly. Some of the guys we were playing this week were 40 or 50 yards longer than us off the tee, but we were consistent, finding fairways and finding greens. “We’re fortunate because we can play our own course all through the winter; some of the lads here can’t play in the winter because their courses are flooded, etc. Matchplay suits us too: if one’s out, the other’s in. “We had a couple of tight matches; we won two games on 18 so we could easily have lost two on 18 and we wouldn’t have been in the final.

The organisation has been great, everything was there when you needed it. I’m sure the guys we’ve beaten were disappointed but everybody’s been gracious; it’s all been played in a great spirit.” In total, 32 amateur golfers from across the UK and Ireland qualified for the trip of a lifetime to compete in the grand final of four competitions – singles, pairs, mixed pairs and senior pairs – played at the historic port city of Essaouira on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, in an event sponsored for a second year by the Moroccan National Tourist Office.

Former Puttenham Golf Club Captain Roly Law was presented with a new Tee Sign for the 5th hole at Puttenham Golf Club on Saturday 9 January. The presentation was in honour of his recent 90th Birthday. It was a complete surprise for Roly, who had been told to dress smartly in his Captain’s Blazer, when Bob Symes took him down to the fifth tee to have his photograph taken by Alan Marshall.

SURREY CLUBS TAKE GOLD AND SILVER AT GOLF INDUSTRY ‘OSCARS’

T

he Wentworth Club and Foxhills, in Surrey, have been rewarded for their consistently high service levels at the annual 59club golf service awards – regarded by many as the ‘Oscars’ of the industry. The awards are designed to reward the top golf venues across all business elements – sales, service, operations, retail, food and beverage, and management – while 59club’s industry benchmark, the Gold and Silver Flags, recognise the finest membership clubs and commercial venues. In total, 18 awards were presented at a ceremony compered by talkSPORT presenter Georgie Bingham held at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club – celebrating the achievements of the very best individuals, teams and venues within the golf industry, while 20 golf venues

saw their commitment to continued quality recognised with the award of a prestigious ‘flag’. Wentworth received a coveted ‘Gold Flag’ whilst Foxhills received a ‘Silver flag’ for a consistent series of outstanding assessments in 59club’s regular mystery shopper calls and visits. Simon Wordsworth, chief executive at 59club and a fellow of the PGA, said: “Congratulations to the team at Wentworth and Foxhills who do a fabulous job day in, day out, as shown by their performance in our mystery shopper tests. This ‘flag’ is richly deserved and illustrates a longterm commitment to standards of excellence.” 59club is fast becoming the industry standard for measuring and comparing customer-service levels and analysing

ROYAL VISIT SIGNALS START OF RICHMOND’S 125TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS Princess Alexandra took time out from her busy schedule to help The Richmond Golf Club launch its 125th anniversary celebrations at the prestigious London club.

H

er Royal Highness was guest of honour as the club staged a Founders’ Day reception on the 5th of February, the exact date when the club was formed in Richmond’s Greyhound Hotel back in 1891. More than 200 members and guests joined the Princess for the glittering black-tie champagne reception in The Richmond Golf Club’s Grade I listed Georgian clubhouse – with the highlight of the evening coming with the unveiling of two speciallycommissioned paintings of the clubhouse by renowned artist Ken Howard RA OBE. Jeremy Williams, captain of The Richmond Golf Club, said: “The event

was a great success and I would like to thank everyone for all their hard work in providing such a memorable occasion to launch our anniversary celebrations. “We’re very proud to be able to continue our close association with the Royal Family in such an important year for the club and this was a tremendous way to begin our busy calendar of events.” Princess Alexandra’s attendance at the evening extended the club’s historic links with the Royal Family. King George VI was club captain in 1924

prior to ascending the throne; his wife, later to become the Queen Mother, was Patron of the club for many years until her death in 2002, while the current Duke of York, Prince Andrew, has been Patron since 2006. The event is the first of many that will be staged by the club over the coming months that will see it host a series of golf days and glamorous evening events to celebrate its anniversary, including a special black-tie dinner at the House of Commons hosted by member and local MP Zac Goldsmith.

He continues, “The Oaks has got exactly what we need with a good

18 hole course, a nine hole par three course and a 16-bay driving range. It’s the perfect place to develop beginners and fulfil the World of Golf CEO’s, Grant Wright, idea to take complete beginners all the way to accomplished golfers in a seamless journey with our arm round them all the way.” Interested in some free lessons? THE GOLF DAYS UK SURREY/SUSSEX TOUR In 2016, one Monday a month will be the best day of the week!

A

rriving at Worthing Golf course for the first of the year’s ten stableford events I was greeted by a strong northerly wind and cold tough conditions to take on the demanding Lower Course. Although a good looking track it was fairly wet conditions underfoot, despite this the course was playing very well. I was very excited to be playing in the event. One of the unique things about the Surrey/Sussex Tour is the addition of the GDScore Live Golf Scoring handsets that gives you the live scores from across the course as you play, something that adds to the event and makes you feel like a ‘tour pro’! The Tour has an affiliation with Nike Golf and offers a catalogue of excellent prizes to choose from. If you manage to come in the top three you can win prizes worth up to £150. Loudmouth Golf are an official sponsor and each event winner gets a £75 voucher to spend. Having played the first event, I got the gist that competitors’ are here to have

fun seeing one dressed in a bright yellow Loudmouth polo and shorts, but as well as the fun side, we were all there to play our best golf and qualify for the Grand Final at The Shire London in October. I got off to a slow start with only a point on the first hole and this pretty much summed up my day, finishing with 26 points. The second event of the Golf Days UK Surrey/Sussex Tour 2016 was hosted by Burhill Golf Club on Monday 14th March. The New Course at Burhill

was basking in spring sunshine, but a strong wind blowing across the course meant a tough scoring day was on the cards for all to secure the first Major of the season. The tour has seven regular events and three Major events, with the Major events at slightly more premium courses across the counties and increased prize pools, makes them a must play at a decent price. I was once again buzzing to be competing, but after a decent start and a good ball striking day, the putting touch had left me leaking shots all over the place and a disappointing 25 points. Even though there has been two events on the tour so far, there are still eight to go and with plenty of opportunity for players to qualify, if you haven’t tried the Golf Days UK ‘Tour Experience’ be sure to get along to the next event!

Next event – Bramley Golf Club 11th April For more information on joining Golf Days UK tours visit www.golfdaysuk.co.uk

JUNIOR NEWS

ROOKIETOUR 2015 ROUND UP

The Surrey Golf RookieTour began in 2007 with the purpose of providing a competitive golf experience for Surrey Junior golfers aged under 14, away from their normal club environment. The tour is for both boys and girls and is split into different age groups, U14 boys, U12 boys and U14 girls. The boys play for both scratch and handicap prizes and Order of Merit (‘OOM’) points in each age group, the girls play for handicap prizes and OOM points only.

14

T

he benefit of the RookieTour to Surrey is that it develops junior golfers of a very high quality, teaches etiquette and provides the Surrey team managers and coaches with a means of assessing and nurturing golfing talent from a young age. Virtually all Surrey junior golfers have played on the RookieTour and it is used to assist in team selection at county level as well as being a feeder of talent to England Golf. The RookieTour currently has 25 players with single figure handicaps and a further 30 who are between 10 and 14. The maximum handicap allowed on the tour is 36.

The 2015 RookieTour proved to be as successful and popular as in previous years, with over 200 players registered for the 2015 events. 2016 appears likely to match this number, demonstrating the continued popularity of the tour as a key stage in the development of junior golfers in Surrey. In 2015 all the categories were very competitive, with most of the Order of Merits still to be decided at the Race To The Stars event held at the Royal Automobile Club, where they played the Old Course, in its centenary year. Following the Race To The Stars event, the Order of Merit winners were crowned at the RookieTours’ annual prize giving ceremony, held at Pine Ridge.

JUNIOR NEWS

The U14 Scratch OoM winner was Ben Partridge (Epsom), who put in a display of consistent golf, which included two victories in the Scratch competitions. In 2nd place, also with two victories this year was Luke Stock (Tandridge), while Enrique Dimayuga (Cuddington) took 3rd. In the U14 Handicap OoM the honours were taken by Billy Costello (Wentworth) who made a late charge up the leader board in the final two events. In 2nd place was Tejin Mason (Surrey National) with Luke Stock (Tandridge) taking 3rd place. Anna Stock (Surrey National) won the U14 Girls OoM, scoring two victories during the year. Salysa Mason (Surrey National) took 2nd place and Estelle Ingram (Windlesham) finished 3rd. The U12 Scratch OoM winner had already been crowned before the Race to the Stars event, as Shergo Kurdi (Windlesham) had an unassailable lead.

He scored eight victories during the year with a perfect OoM score of 210 points. Benjamin Brew (Surbiton) secured 2nd place with three victories and Jack Roberts (Wentworth) finished in 3rd. Yusuf Sarwar (Royal Wimbledon) secured the U12 Handicap OoM, usurping long-time leader Rio MercerMarsden (Hoebridge) at the final event. Cameron Cridge (Farleigh) took 3rd place. Well done to all those who took places in the Order of Merit’s. To be in contention for an OoM requires consistent golf across a season and all of these players demonstrated this quality. The RookieTour also awards a trophy for the most gross birdies recorded by a player during the course of a season on the tour. The 2015 Birdie Trophy was won by Ben Partridge (Epsom) who extended his winning margin by making two birdies at the RAC. In total Ben made 20 birdies this season, averaging

2 birdies per event. In joint 2nd place, with 16 birdies – Shergo Kurdi (Windlesham), Oliver Kail (Betchworth Park) and Lewis Brown (Surbiton). The Sinclair Salver, awarded by the Committee to the player who upholds the traditions of golf and demonstrates good etiquette throughout the season, was given to Robert Muir (Wimbledon Park).

SURREY LADIES

LADY PRESIDENT ELECTED AT HINDHEAD GOLF CLUB What possibly makes this unique to any golf club, is that Ruth follows in the footsteps of her late husband, Dick, who was also President from 2006 to 2009. Ruth joined Hindhead in April 1981, as an overseas member whilst living an expat life, becoming a full member in July 1986. Ruth learnt to play golf while living in Lagos, Nigeria, and once back in the UK, both she and her husband threw themselves into the game, supporting their Club by both taking on the role of Club Captain and Ladies’ Captain together in 1999.

Ruth Hartley has been elected as President of the Hindhead Golf Club, the first time in its 112 year history that the Club will have a lady as President.

On taking on her new role, Ruth commented, “I am very proud and humble to be considered as President, but the job will be evolving over the next years with the ongoing incorporation of the club.”

THREE SURREY PLAYERS TURN PROFESSIONAL IN A YEAR

Iona Stephen

Annabel Dimmock

Iona Stephen (Wentworth) has a full category on the Ladies European Access tour and will be playing 14 events during 2016, starting in France at the end of March. Iona has represented Surrey over the last two years and is very grateful for all the Surrey support that she has received over this time.

Iona joins Annabel Dimmock (Wentworth) who has already qualified for 2016 Ladies European Tour, having turned professional in February 2015. Another Surrey player who has come through the ranks to turn professional in Summer 2015 is Shannon Flynn (Burhill). Good luck to all!

18

SURREY PLAYERS START 2016 Inci Mehmet represented England in the Nations Cup at the Portuguese Women’s Amateur Championship over 72 holes at the Montado Golf resort, from 27th -30th of January but after rounds of 78, 75,75 missed the cut on this occasion. Inci, 19, had top ten finishes in the 2015 World Girls’ Championship as well as in the English, Irish and Scottish Women’s stroke play championships. She was also part of the winning England team in the British Stroke play competition. Lauren Horsford competed in Final Qualifier in Morocco for Ladies European Tour 2016 but having shot a 4 under par 68 on day 1, missed the cut by 1 shot. Surrey 2nd team, captained by Delyth Roberts, started their season with an excellent win against Hankley Common on Sunday 7th of February, with the final result 5½ /2½ to Surrey. Exciting newcomer Bo Westra (Royal Wimbledon) won her match 2/1.

LIZZIE WINS IN RECORD STYLE IN USA

England’s Lizzie Prior has won her first tournament on the US women’s college circuit with a 15-under par score for 54 holes. Prior, from Burhill in Surrey, took the honours in the Battle at Boulder Creek II where she had rounds of 64, 69 and 68. Her first round of eightunder par was a record at her college, the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The 18-year-old won the England Golf girls’ order of merit for 2015 and was in England’s winning team at the Girls’ Home Internationals – helping to win the title for the eighth consecutive time. Well Done Lizzie!

OPEN UP A WHOLE NEW CHAPTER IN GOLF...

T

here are some special birthdays in your life, your 18th, 21st and all those ending in 0 but in golfing terms the big birthday is 55 – the day a golfer qualifies for seniors golf! If you are 55 or over and want to play quality scratch golf from April to November then read on... Senior golf is open to all category one golfers. It has a great fixtures list competing against Dorset, Hampshire, Kent and Sussex in the South East League. The winners play off against League winners from north of the river for the chance of being crowned South East Champions. In addition, there is a foursomes tournament (Surrey were

the 2014 champions) and you could even compete in the Seniors National Championship or the full program of stroke play across Europe. Surrey is ambitious for its seniors, providing coaching for squad players through head coach, John Noble and they are always looking for new players to join what is an ever improving squad. Several current Surrey County players have even represented their home nations recently. Pat Garner, Les Bruckner and Ian Attoe (the current English Senior Champion) all play for England while Tony Patterson has represented Scotland. At the ProAm ahead of the British

any golfers know their unwanted tendencies that often destroy their scores. It could be a slice, poorly struck iron shots from the fairway, lack of distance or any of the above! But what’s the fix? The mistake is to try and change something too far down the chain reaction of the golf swing. Trying to correct things through the ball for example, but normally the fixes lie much earlier in the swing. With a calculated approach we can resolve these issues and have you fired up for the new golfing season! Here I’m going to go through a simple checklist from preparation, right through to the finish of the swing to make sure you’re fixing things right from the start.

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

ADDRESS POSITION (pic’s 1 and 2) The posture should be balanced and athletic with good clean body angles keeping the natural curvature in the lower back. The weight should be slightly favouring the balls of the feet with a weight distribution of 50/50 between left and right feet for irons and 60/40 for woods. The spine angle should tilt slightly away from the target with the left shoulder higher to enable a full body turn behind the ball. THE MOVE AWAY (pic’s 3 and 4) With the foundation of a great set up, the move away will set the club in motion and as with any journey,

it’s important to start in the right direction! Initiate the swing with the upper body and core and check that when the club is parallel to the ground, it should also be parallel to your toe line. HALF WAY BACK (pic’s 5 and 6) Now the club has gathered momentum there should be a naturally occurring wrist hinge to set the club on the correct plane. When the left arm is parallel to the ground the grip end of the club should point between your toe line the ball with an approximate 90’ wrist hinge. continued on page 24

GOLF ACADEMY

7

9

TOP OF THE BACK SWING (pic’s 7 and 8) Ideally the body turn and the completion of the arm and club swing will complete the back swing at the same time. The shoulders should now have about a 90’ shoulder turn with the club being approximate parallel to the ground depending on whether it’s a shorter iron or driver. The club shaft should point at the target at the top of the backswing or slightly left for a shorter swing with an iron. HALF WAY DOWN AND APPROACHING IMPACT (pics 9 and 10) A key position which has a big influence on the path of the club head through the ball. From the top, the lower body should first move laterally, then the middle and upper body will turn into the ball with the shaft at a similar angle and position that of the half way back position. A good guide is for the shaft to track down between the right shoulder and right elbow and continuing down so the club head works down through the hands or 24

slightly behind them. A video of your golf swing from the correct camera angle is very useful here. IMPACT (pics 11 and 12) The hips will now be open to the target line and the chest and shoulders square or slightly open. The majority of the weight should now be into the left foot with the right side of the body and right shoulder moving forwards to assist in the acceleration of the club head through impact (commonly called the ‘release’). With an iron the spine will be only slightly titled away from the target to assist in a more downward strike and more backwards for a driver, which needs to hit more on the up swing. FINISH POSITION (pics 13 and 14) The weight distribution should now be very much favouring the forward

foot. With a full body rotation through the ball the chest should be facing to the left of the target and the club shaft having travelled behind the back of the neck. A good balance here will indicate a well coordinated swing. HOW DO I CHECK THESE POSITIONS? Use a mirror or patio door at home to help you see these positions from the correct angles or even better is to use video. Video analysis has been around for years in golf coaching, from the humble VHS camcorder 20 years ago to the high speed analysis systems we use now. It really is invaluable to see your swing from ‘the outside’ as feelings of positions often do not match up to reality.

JOHN NOBLE The PGA in England (South) Coach of the Year 2015 A PGA member and golf coach since 1993, John Noble (RAC Club) has one of the most illustrious careers of any golf coach, especially when it comes to stars of the future, getting young people into golf or simply getting great results. Now the head coach for Surrey Golf and regional coach for England Golf, Noble is based at The RAC Club as senior teaching professional. Under his guidance, Surrey Men’s team won the Southern League in 2013, the regional six-man team qualifier in 2014, and finish third in the National Finals.

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

MEET THE PRO

What have been the highlights and low points of your career?

What do you enjoy doing off the course?

The highlight undoubtedly was being appointed as Head coach for Surrey Golf. The low point is anytime any of the teams lose, but in particular losing out on the last day the National Finals in 2014.

Playing tennis with my wife, son and daughter (until I lose of course).

What’s your favourite on course energy snack/drink? Cashew nuts and bananas.

Started golf age five at Lanark Golf Club in Scotland. Who was/is your biggest influence? My Grandfather. He introduced me to golf and drove me all over the country to play in events. Which is your favourite Surrey course (apart from the one you are resident at) and why?

Easy, Tiger, Jack and Rory. The best of their generation and players who raised the bar time and time again. Dream foursome (living or dead)?

Apart from RAC I think it would be difficult to pick between Wentworth and Sunningdale.

This one is difficult. I think I would like to have played with some of the golfers who made a difference to how golf was played and developed, so I would pick Harry Vardon, Henry Cotton and Ben Hogan.

What advice would you give to the Surrey youngsters wanting to turn professional?

If you could change one aspect, rule or thing about golf, what would it be and why?

Build a great partnership with a PGA coach and make every shot count in practice. It’s what you do when no one is watching that makes champions.

The penalty shot for a ball being dropped out of a flooded bunker. Just seems strange to penalise a player for something they have no control over.

Which Surrey club has the best half way hut?

At what age did you start playing golf and which club did you start at?

Dream foursome (living)?

What has been your most career defining shot so far? Most career defining shots for me are hit by other people in our teams but personally the most enjoyable shot was a hole in one at Golspie in a Tartan Tour event.

Hankley Common. It was the first course I played when I came to Surrey in 1994 and was the venue when the County team won the South East qualifier in 2014, the first major victory I was involved in as County Coach. The course demands every skill from the golfer. Which is your favourite course worldwide? My home course Lanark, the 25th oldest club in the world. A hidden gem described as an inland links. What course is on your bucket list that you have not played yet? Absolutely has to be Augusta National.

PUTTING

TOUR STANDARD PUTTING WOULD YOU LIKE TO REDUCE YOUR HANDICAP AND WIN MORE OFTEN? THERE IS A WAY TO ACHIEVE THIS!

DO WHAT THE BEST DO...

H

arvey Penick said the best way to save strokes every round is not to have any penalty shots and NEVER three putt. The first element I cannot help you with, but the second I can. Over the next twelve months we will create a process to make you a great putter and lower your scores. As a coach I know the following idea is unfortunately true, but I hope that it does not apply to you. Most people read an instruction article but never take any action on what they learn. The information, as good as it is, is not enough. The action that you take on the information is vital.

LESSON ONE

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS The first thing to know is how good a putter you currently are. There are numerous statistics available on the various professional tours but what you need to know is how many times you actually use your putter in every round, so keep a log!

28

You can keep track with various apps on your phone or tablet. The app that I use as a competitive player is Nike Golf 360. It is a free service that keeps a comprehensive record of every round. You are striving for 30 putts per round; see how far you are away from that.

LESSON TWO

HOW WELL DO YOU AIM? One of the reasons people do not putt well is that they do not aim the putter face correctly at address. Remember the hole is 4 Âź inches wide, so aiming the putter face properly is vital. At Raa putters we have developed a Laser Aiming system to retrain how you aim the face. Start with a straight six foot putt. Position the inch board with the zero behind the centre of a hole. Aim the putter face at what you think is the centre. Place the laser on the face to get a true idea of your aiming tendency. To retrain your aim, position the laser without the putter at the zero, place your putter face against the flat side of the laser. This will show you what a perpendicular putter face at address looks like. Golfers also struggle with their aim due to the length of their putter. Putter length affects the eyes, which affects the path. If your putter is too long you stand too far back, if it is too short then you stand too far over. If you stand too far over, due to a

short putter, when you look up, you look left of the hole. If the putter is too long you stand too far back and when you look up, you look right of the hole. This makes the length of your putter vital to how well you are able to aim the face. To find out more about how to improve your putting and how the correct putter can help please contact your local Raa fitting centre. DUBLIN’S FAIR CITY REVIEW lf by Surrey Go

With so much to do in and around Dublin, a plethora of pubs serving the world’s best Guinness and more golf clubs than you could play in a month, it’s very easy to see why Ireland is a world-class golf destination.

G

olf in Ireland is a firm favourite with some of the world’s biggest stars, so it’s no surprise that Ireland has been listed as one of the top destinations for golfing tourists. Royal Dublin Golf Club Formed in 1885 and receiving its royal designation in 1891, the Royal Dublin Golf Club is steeped in the history and tradition of Irish golf. It has been home to many championships, amateur and professional, with the highlights being three memorable Irish Opens staged from 1983 to 1985.

30

Situated on Bull Island, a sand bank just off the north shore of Dublin Bay, a natural home for a fine links course. The Royal Dublin Golf Course is a traditional links with an excellent view of Dublin Bay. The 1st hole 390 yards (Par 4) has out of bounds down the right hand side stretching practically from tee to green. It gives a nervy start where cross winds can push you towards the out of bounds. The green is well protected with bunkers, mounds and hollows. The 2nd 470 yards (Par 5) sees the out of bounds continue all the way

down the right as it would for the whole of the front nine. Down the left a stream runs the length of the hole. The green is raised slightly, well protected by the typical links humps, hollows and undulations, which force deeper thinking as you figure a route to best send your ball. Relaxing after that hole is not an option as the third is like a ski mogel field in places and needs to be navigated. The 5th Hole, 425 yards (Par 4) has a very narrow fairway and is a tight tee shot, again where a hearty crosswind could easily push you out of bounds.

Having turned direction onto the back nine, the use of ditches and streams add to the stern test of golf and placement of the ball is paramount, particularly if laying up on the 11th and 14th (Par 5’s) with many bunkers waiting to grab the drive, second and third shots in regulation. A great risk and reward finishing hole, the 18th is long at 470 yards (Par 4). A sharp dog leg right means your drive needs to be as tight to a stream down the right hand side as you dare, to leave you a shorter second to the green – stray too far right and either the stream or out of bounds await your ball. Three well placed bunkers down the left make it nearly impossible to reach the green that sits in front of the clubhouse. continued on page 32

Overall a fantastic day on the Links but hitting the raised contoured greens is a must. That said it’s very easy to fall off one of the many run offs leaving even the very best of short games with a tricky up and down attempt. You have to love the design of the course and use of typically links dunes. Stay and play at The K Club The Kildare Hotel, at The K Club, Ireland’s First AA 5 Red Star Hotel, is located in the heart of the idyllic Irish countryside on the banks of the River Liffey in Straffan, Co.Kildare This long standing member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts offers the very best of pampering, leisure and golf facilities and is only 30 minutes from Dublin. Built in 1832, on the banks of the River Liffey, the original house was modelled on a French Château and still retains many of its original architectural features, art work and antiques. It opened as a luxury hotel in 1991 and was Ireland’s first AA Five Red Star property. To this day it continues to deliver the very highest levels of service and standards The K Club

in terms of its food and beverage, golf, leisure and spa treatments. Designed by Arnold Palmer, The Palmer Ryder Cup Course is considered one of Europe’s finest Championship Courses and a golf holiday in Ireland would not be complete without a visit to The K Club, let’s face it where else can you play a venue that has hosted The Ryder Cup and 13 European Opens? Standing on the first tee where Europe triumphed over the USA team brings back great memories of watching the matches. Tiger’s pulled first tee drive into the water and Darren Clarke’s emotion filled booming long drive splitting the fairway! It’s a good starting hole 410 yards (Par 4) and with a decent drive leaving a mid to short iron into the green for the longer hitters. The second hole 413 yards (Par 4) presents a tight tee shot with trees on both sides of the fairway. Stray only a short distance from the short stuff and you will be chipping out or trying to play a low cut or hook through the woodwork.

The 4th Hole, 545 yards (Par 5) has a blind opening shot, but find the fairway and you have the opportunity to go for the green if you are not infringed by overhanging trees on the right. Hole 7 395 yards (Par 4) is a fabulous hole bringing water heavily into play on tee shots and the approach, very intimidating but picturesque. Although there are a lot of great holes on this golf course, including the 14th 197 yards (Par 3) with a waterfall for a backdrop, the final three holes 16,17 and 18 are fantastic exhilarating holes that will have you fighting hard to keep a score going. The 16th 534 yards (Par 5) is a superb hole with water the length of the left side, it will have you praying for a good swing and for your ball to stay dry – a common theme of the finishing holes! The 17th 364 yards (Par 4) is a dogleg left with a tee shot demands accuracy again with water to the left of the fairway and the large slopping green. The 18th 518 yards (Par 5) starts with a blind tee shot. After finding the fairway and having the opportunity to go for the well protected green (with water in front and left and large bunkers to the right) a fine strike is required to find the large beckoning green. With the round completed and pint of Guinness in hand I was happy to tick off the bucket list. GOLF BREAKS AT SAUNTON THE GRASS IS GREENER

S

uch is the quality of the Saunton Golf Club (particularly the East Course) that it could easily have hosted The Open by now, says our Golf Coordinator Mark Jenkins. However, funnily enough, the very reason it hasn’t happened yet is the same reason Mark books so many dedicated golf getaways to Saunton every year – it’s the club’s relatively remote seaside location that makes access difficult for such a big national event. Obviously that’s not a problem when you’re a group of friends or from an individual club; in fact, it’s an absolute selling point. That is, if you enjoy playing golf on championship links courses without the crowds and

with expansive views over one of England’s favourite beaches... If this sounds like your idea of golfing heaven, Mark can help book your next golf holiday at Saunton. Because not only does he know his stuff, he’s as passionate about golf as you are. Formerly Captain and then President of Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club in 2010 and 2012, Mark and his son also won the European Father and Son Golf Championship in 2013. ‘Not only are the Saunton Sands Hotel and Saunton Golf Club located physically close to each other, they also both embody the same level of quality,’ says Mark, who can organise

COME AND EXPERIENCE LINKS GOLF ON KENT’S COAST Prince’s Golf Club located on Sandwich Bay on the east Kent coast boasts wonderful accommodation offering sea or golf course views and 27 holes of Championship links golf set near to the charming ancient town of Sandwich.

P

rince’s is set to have an exciting 2016, with two R&A events being held: the St. Andrews Trophy where golfers from GB&I play against their continental counterparts and the Jacques Leglise Trophy with the same format for boys. In 2017 Prince’s will co-host the Amateur Championship with Royal St. George’s and from 2018 to 2021 the links will be one of the Final Qualifying venues for the Open. The Championship links of Prince’s, scene of Gene Sarazen’s 1932 Open victory have benefited from continual investment over the last few years and are now presented in the best condition that members and golfing visitors have ever seen.

40

In the three years since the Lodge at Prince’s has opened, golfing guests have enjoyed the comfortable surroundings and friendly welcome. The 38 ensuite bedrooms offer the perfect choice for a golf break at Prince’s or indeed to also enjoy the other Championship links along this coastline, of Royal St. George’s and Royal Cinque Ports Golf Clubs over several days. Guests have been impressed by the quality of the dining experience in the 2AA Rosette Restaurant, the Brasserie on the Bay. But Prince’s can offer more to their guests in 2016: a new grass practice tee will be opened (it could double as a football pitch given its size!) with the professional team headed up by Kent PGA Captain Anthony Tarchetti offering lessons to include Trackman technology or a ‘links’ warm-up to give golfers a flavour of links skills before teeing off. The gym onsite is always available for hotel guests use. Guests can also book to view ‘The Gallery’ a fascinating and visual walk through the history of Prince’s. Accessing Prince’s has never been easier, with great road links directly to Sandwich via the M2 and A256 or A299 being only 90 miles from

Leatherhead or via the High Speed Rail Link from London St. Pancras. Golfers will enjoy the fabulous links conditions and non-golfers can enjoy the coastal setting along with many other local attractions – seal watching boat trips, local cookery school and historical sites of interest such as nearby Dover Castle. Simply mention that you are going to the Bahamas, stand back and watch the predictable reaction of friends and family as they exhibit an unattractive mix of astonished disbelief and undiluted envy. Written by Clive Agran

T

he fact that these inoffensive islands lying a little below and to the east of the southern tip of Florida have come to be synonymous with self-indulgence, extravagance and high-living is perhaps partly due to the popular perception of them as a tropical tax haven providing a perfect playground for the super rich and hugely famous. Well, the advent of Abaco Club will certainly do nothing to alter this image as its unashamed upmarket appeal is to the fabulously wealthy seeking luxurious exclusivity. Peter de Savary, the Club’s founder, has a knack for knowing what the well

heeled want and has created a string of top-notch bolt holes including Skibo Castle in Scotland and Bovey Castle on Dartmoor. The formula he employs is surprisingly simple. Find a fabulous site in a spectacular setting well away from the great unwashed; create quality accommodation that combines comfort with something distinctly different; provide a rich array of activities to ensure your guests are always happily occupied; generate a supremely relaxed and friendly atmosphere and finally, price it beyond continued on page 44

the reach of common folk to keep it exceedingly private, gloriously quiet and frightfully exclusive. De Savary knows what his clients want and has undoubtedly given it to them with coconuts on top at the Abaco Club. Fishing, walking, tennis, cycling, snorkelling and sailing are important ingredients in the overall mix but golf is clearly the key component and a large chunk of the sizeable investment that has been sunk into this previously undiscovered corner of the charming island of Abaco has helped create an outstanding course. Only an unashamed showman like de Savary can get away with describing it as: “The world’s first

Scottish style tropical links golf course.” Although you will never for a moment mistakenly imagine you are North of the Border rather than on the edge of the Caribbean. By the time you have sunk your last putt, instead of assuming the quote originates in a malt whisky or

rum cocktail, you will better appreciate the point he was making. The first four holes run parallel to the dazzling white sands and turquoise water of Winding Bay. Cute onebedroom cabanas in pretty pastel shades (which cost £560 a night to sleep in) initially obscure your view of the sea. Be patient, for the wait is well worthwhile. All is revealed when you reach the fourth green, but let your eyes adjust to the almost blinding spectacle of the breathtaking beach before attempting a putt. Classic links’ courses traditionally follow a nine out, nine back pattern and Donald Steele’s design does its best to adhere to this historic template. However, to accommodate a miniloop of four holes that provides a final flourish, it has been abbreviated here to seven out and seven back with the continued on page 46

FURTHER INFORMATION The best way to fly to The Bahamas is by British Airways from Heathrow to Nassau. From Nassau you can pick up connecting flights to Abaco or Freeport. However, be wary of using Bahamasair as their reputation for reliability is worse than my short game. Although The Bahamas has its own currency – the Bahamian dollar – it enjoys precise parity with the US dollar, which is accepted everywhere. The winters are very mild but can be rather wet, while mid-summer is uncomfortably hot in the afternoon. Spring and autumn are probably the best times to visit, although there is a slight hurricane risk in the autumn. The Abaco Club – for details and prospectus, contact the reservations department: T: 1-242-367-0077 E: reservations@theabacoclub.com www.theabacoclub.com

holes running east to west along a narrow neck of land stretching between Winding Bay and Yellow Wood Creek. Although the terrain is essentially fairly flat, the wind has sculpted genuine dunes and the consequent mounds, bumps, ridges and hollows help create an unmistakable ‘linksy’ feel, which is markedly superior to the horribly contrived so-called ‘links-like’

46

courses that are manufactured all too frequently these days both on clay and hundreds of miles inland. The bunkers, too, appear natural. Generously proportioned and full of sugary white sand, they threaten both tee-shots and approaches and oblige you to plot your way carefully around the course. Invariably raised, frequently tiered and with a mass of subtle borrows, the greens are both decidedly tricky and an authentic recreation of what you might find stretched along the Fife coast. Dangerous little run-off hollows that suck balls down into them faster than a disappearing pina colada on a hot afternoon, lurk alongside the greens with more menace than a basking shark. The fairways are generous and sympathetically shaped to encourage the ball back into the middle but stray too far off line and the slopes work the other way and roll you into the colourful but inhospitable brush that skirts most holes. The only point at which you might regret eschewing a buggy in favour of walking this gentle course is as you leave the 14th green and begin a steep ascent to the 15th tee. The fatigue will soon be forgotten when you take in the

glorious panorama that awaits you at the top. What makes both the course and the Abaco Club unique in the area is the significant elevation provided by the rocky bluff that resembles a gnarled old finger pointing into the ocean. The views from the final four holes and the prices of the adjacent properties are almost equally spectacular. The best is undoubtedly saved until last, as the 18th is one of those majestic holes that make you glad you took up golf. A sweeping par five that runs along the cliff top with glorious views over the sea on both sides, it is surely destined to make its way into any decent selection of golf ’s greatest finishing holes. Maintained in immaculate condition, the course has shot up the leaderboard and is confidently tipped to establish itself as number one in The Bahamas. With illustrious names like Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke and Sir Sean Connery among the many owner members, it’s unlikely to remain a well-kept secret. But with guests supposedly restricted to one casual visit before being obliged to join and with membership requiring an initial deposit of around £43,000 and an annual subscription of £2,300, it’s equally unlikely to be overrun.

The all new HH1 putter from Heavenly Hybrid is creating huge interest, and for good reasons: • Extremely lightweight • Incredibly easy to line up (an area where MOST golfers struggle) • Hot off the face allowing you to make a shorter more controlled stroke

Don’t just take our word for it, visit www.heavenlyhybrid.com to read what golfers are saying about this. For only £79 plus postage can you afford to NOT own one?
