World no.1 George Groves claimed his first title on home soil when he beat a strong international field in blustery but dry conditions in the 2019 English Disability Open staged over the Gainsborough course at Stoke by Nayland.

George Groves

GROVES TAKES HIS FIRST HOME SOIL TITLE AT THE ENGLISH DISABILITY OPEN

G

roves, from Horne Park Golf Club in Surrey, carded rounds of 77 and 74 to claim a five-shot victory over veteran competitor Duncan Hamilton-Martin (St George’s Hill, Surrey) on seven-over par 151 with Ami Bullock (Woking, Surrey) taking third place a further four shots behind. The victory made up for the disappointment of being pipped to the title 12 months ago and it should also earn him a place in the field for the disability event being run in tandem with the European Tour’s seasonending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on this November. “It was great to get my first English title under the belt,” said the new champion. “There’s a lot of competition out there for my world No.1 slot and hopefully this is enough to secure my place to Dubai. “I really loved the course and the competitors here at Stoke by Nayland and am really happy with the result.” The English Disability Open, which was part of the England Golf championships calendar for the first time, was open to players who are eligible for the World Rankings for Golfers with a disability (WR4GD). It attracted 42 male and female

6

competitors from across Britain, France and The Netherlands, including new players Ellie Perks (Hagley, Worcestershire) and George Blackshaw (Delamere Forest, Cheshire). During the competition there were other winners for the Net Category and Stableford Category: Net Category (handicaps up to 20.4): Tony Lloyd (The Shropshire, Shropshire) who scored a net total of one under par 143 for his two rounds. Stableford Category (handicaps above 20.5): Kevin Cook (LLanwern) who scored 34 points and 29 points to win the title by two points with a total of 63 points. The presentations were made by John Williams, Past President of England Golf, and Susanna Rendall, Director of Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa. Jamie Blair, Inclusion and Wellbeing Manager for England Golf, commented: “This event truly shows that golf and the handicap system focusses on your ability as a golfer and not your disability.” “Stoke by Nayland have been fantastic hosts and I would like to say thank you to the management, staff, members and volunteers who have embraced this event, creating a welcoming environment

for players new and experienced and making it a huge success.” “I would also like to say thank you to our referees and to the R&A for their support. Without them, we would not be able to run a championship that showcases the game at the highest level of competition for golfers with a disability in England.”

WOODMAN SEES NO TREES AT CUDDINGTON 8 UNDER PAR 63 FINAL ROUND SEALS PGA SURREY OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

I

n a thrilling climax to July’s Virgin Atlantic PGA South Order of Merit tournament, Guy Woodman birdied the last hole to win the PGA Surrey Open Championship. In the process, the ProAgenda.com man shot a record-equalling eightunder-par 63 at Cuddington to post a 14-under-par total* and take home the historic trophy and the £2,000 winner’s cheque. “I couldn’t be happier!” commented a delighted Woodman, adding: “It was great to be playing in the very relaxed company of Paul (Newman) and Andy (Raitt), and that really helped my golf and my focus.” He said: “Cuddington was in terrific condition and The PGA in England

(South) and home PGA Pro, Paul Schunter, ensured another great tournament for us all. And after my previous attempts here it’s great to shoot a 63 and come out on top!” Edged into second spot after taking the victor to the wire was overnight leader Paul Newman (East Berks) on 12-under-par (64, 66). The new PGA Southern Open champion Andy Raitt (St. George’s Hill) came in third with rounds of 65 and 67. Playing in ideal conditions and starting the final round a shot behind playing partner Newman, Woodman opened in spectacular style with two eagles against Newman’s par, eagle start. But with both players out in 32, Woodman remained one elusive stroke

behind. Birdies at the 11th, 12th and 15th pulled him ahead by one after 35 holes after Newman’s three birdies and two bogeys, and after a drive and a wedge to the 18th green to four feet of the hole, Woodman holed for a dramatic two shot victory. Also in the mix for the first time was amateur and The Golf College student, Lewis Hinton, who finished on sixunder-par in 12th spot to win the best amateur prize. With three stroke play events and the Keith MacDonald Match Play left to play in the Order of Merit, Raitt’s on top of the leaderboard**, pursued by Jordan Godwin (Barnehurst) and Paul Nessling (Cooden Beach), with Woodman leapfrogging into fourth spot.

BEN PARTRIDGE CLAIMS BOYS’ COUNTY CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TITLE

8

Surrey’s Ben Partridge withstood a late charge from Devon’s Matt Millar to win the English Boys’ County Champion of Champions event over the Red course at Frilford Heath. Partridge (Epsom) held a two shot lead after an opening three under par 69 but was briefly caught by Millar’s closing six under 66 before carding birdies on the 16th and 17th to claim a narrow one shot victory on five under par 139. He becomes the first player from Surrey to clinch the title since Greg Payne tied for first place with Matt Fitzpatrick (Yorkshire), Jewatt Parmer (Rutland) and Jack Singh Brar (Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Cl) Woodhall Spa in 2011. He also succeeds Yorkshire’s Ben Schmidt (Rotherham) as champion who has since gone on to win the Brabazon and Carris Trophies and to play for the winning English team at the Men’s Home Internationals at Lahinch.

Fast track hip and knee replacements. At the Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital. Living with hip or knee pain can be a worrying time and may even affect both your everyday and golfing life. If the pain becomes inconvenient or restricts everyday activities, it may be time to seek help from a healthcare professional. At the Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital our Orthopaedic Consultant, Miss Kate Gill, is now offering fast track hip and knee replacement surgery which can get you back on the golf course sooner than you think. What is a fast track hip or knee replacement?

What are the benefits?

Usually, when patients undergo a knee or hip replacement procedure, they can expect an average hospital stay of 4-5 days for recovery. Miss Gill’s fast track surgery means patients can go home the day after surgery and some patients can even leave on the same day. Patients are often on their feet by 5pm after being in theatre that morning, which provides massive patient benefits.

There are many benefits to having a fast track replacement. These include the ability to be back home recovering in your own home and clothes the day of your surgery. As a general anaesthetic is not used, you won’t be left feeling sick or nauseous following the surgery. Fast track replacements have been proven to reduce length of stay and morbidity. Miss Gill has found no increase in readmission rates or compromise to patient safety for these procedures.

How does a fast track hip or knee replacement work?

Why should I come to the Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital for my Orthopaedic care?

Patients can leave hospital much quicker as their recovery time is considerably shorter. This is because the anaesthetic is targeted and used alongside sedation instead of a general anaesthetic. This allows for quicker post-operative mobilisation, reducing risk of blood clots, strokes, chest problems and heart attacks. The surgical technique and implants are the same, but prior to the operation patients are given carbohydrate loading drinks, this supports a quicker return of bowel function, ensuring patients lose less muscle mass and aids faster recovery.

We have no waiting lists at our hospital, this means you can have an initial consultation with one of our Orthopaedic surgeons in as little as 24-48 hours and receive any necessary treatment shortly after. Our highly experienced consultants are renowned for their consistently successful surgical outcomes. We are not for profit and reinvest back into developing our services and improving the quality of patient healthcare.

SURREY SCRATCH TEAM INTER-CLUB PLATE FINAL

T

his year’s final was played between Purley Downs and Reigate Hill at Malden Golf Club, the format is five a side scratch match

play, all games are played to a finish to ensure there cannot be a tie. To get to the final both teams had won their way through four rounds of the

Plate after going out in the first round of the main scratch competition. Purley Downs had defeated Farleigh, Foxhills and Horne Park to reach the semifinals, where they won against Pyrford. Reigate Hills journey pitted them against The Addington, Tyrrells Wood, Surrey National and Tandridge in the semi’s. With near perfect weather conditions for golf, the matches got underway and each player from both sides gave it their all, producing some outstanding golf. Reigate Hill eventually ran out the winners 4-1. The teams were: Purley Downs – Kevin Smale, Adam Bailey, Richard McGrath, Jevan Ali and Bill Barclay. Reigate Hill – Ben Palmer, Jacob Aaholm, Dan Taplin, Mike Ducker and Mikey Doble.

RAITT WINS WESTCOAST WEDGE St. George’s Hill star picks up PGA South’s biggest payday with seven-under-par 65

A

ndy Raitt (St. George’s Hill) is £10,000 better off after his winning 65 at the Westcoast Pro-Am at Bearwood Lakes. The attraction of the Westcoast pay day and the golfing experience of Bearwood Lakes means the

10

competition is fierce with a field of 51 teams, making it the highlight of The PGA in England’s (South) schedule. Having won this title for the last two years, ProAgenda.com’s Guy Woodman put up a terrific defence, notching up six birdies by the 11th to be in sight of the winner’s podium once more. Two bogeys at the 14th and 15th took the shine off things but with one more birdie at the 17th he carded a five-under-par 67 to take home £2,500. Raitt’s own performance pipped that by two. Starting from the 10th, he was out in 4-under with an eagle 3 at the 16th, and then three more birdies on the way in allowed him to grab the lead and finish with 65. James Heath was the early leader in the clubhouse on 68, but had to watch as first Woodman edged him by a

stroke, and then Raitt pushed him into third place, albeit for £1,250. The team event saw former Bearwood Lakes managing director Carl Rutherford, who has recently moved down to Cornwall and The Point at Polzeath, lead the team of Bearwood Lakes chairman Gary Holloway and pip their nearest rivals led by Lee Mackie (Horton Park), whose team included former England footballer Glen Johnson. Bearwood Lakes director of golf, Jon Dry, commented, “Thanks to the support of Westcoast, Tag Heuer, Mizuno, The PGA and all the players, this one is ‘the’ Pro-Am on the PGA South schedule. It’s always a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase Bearwood Lakes, and from the feedback I can say that everyone enjoyed one the year’s best days.”

LOBB IN NO RUSH AS HE PREPARES TO UPDATE COLT CLASSIC AT TANDRIDGE Sometimes the pace of life in the 21st century can make everything seem too hurried...

R

eassuringly, however, golf course architect Tim Lobb, of Woking-based Lobb + Partners, is at great pains to point out that the work he has been engaged to undertake on the historic Harry Colt-designed course at Tandridge GC, in Surrey, will not “be rushed” . Australian Lobb, whose CV includes work on Colt courses at St George’s Hill and Blackmoor, is also determined the great man’s legacy will be honoured and not ripped up in the name of progress. Colt’s original course dates from 1924 and Lobb has been engaged by the club to carry out a course-evolution programme, while retaining its natural and historic character. The Melbourne University graduate, who has been a course architect since 1996, is currently finalising an initial appraisal of a course he believes is “up there with the very best”. He explained: “It’s a bit of a cliché, but blending the Colt philosophy with modern-day constructability is at the forefront of our mind. It’s a challenge, but we need to be sympathetic to the original Colt design while making it attractive to the demands of 21stcentury golfers.

14

“We’re really interested in the wider landscape philosophy. We’ve always got involved heavily in our other projects with the landscape, particularly when we’ve been working with the heathlands. The landscape is key to the golf course. It’s in a beautiful location, with long views that we’re hoping to enhance. It’s a spectacular course, and we’re extremely proud to be able to play a part in the future of the club. Lobb and his colleagues have gathered extensive historical data on the course, including aerial photography, from English Heritage, from the 1940s, ’60s and ’90s, as the team looks to assess potential changes in a systematic way. He added: “Tandridge probably doesn’t have as much heathland as it should, but it certainly stacks up as well as any course in the top 100. It’s a very big site, with lots of contours, lots of movement – although I believe the landscape and the longer views across the countryside could be improved now, to enhance the golf further. “It will be a phased evolution programme, probably over five to seven years during the winter periods. I want

to be able to leave the course in a flexible state, a course that will be playable for all standards of golfer. I realise that’s always said, but it is such an important element in today’s market. Tandridge GC’s course director, Peter Allington, added: “Many improvements have been made to the course over the past 10 years, but it is imperative we continue to move the club forward in a controlled and planned manner, so we are looking to produce and implement a course evolution plan for the next 10 years and potentially beyond that. “Tim brings a professional and creative approach to the design process, while always respecting the Colt philosophy and maintains a ‘hands-on’ presence during the construction phase.” The delightful Tandridge course, near Oxted, affords spectacular views of the Surrey North Downs and the High Weald, with the front nine running along relatively gentle land and the back nine sited in more rolling and dramatic terrain.

Jasper Cox shooting 76, Oscar Lent 77 and Oliver Wren and Cameron Cridge both on 78. Lunch was a welcome break and an appearance by Peter Allis and Jack Buchanan, Surrey President, was greatly appreciated by both the players and the club. It was great to hear Peter reminisce about days gone by and how much things have changed! The afternoon scores didn’t disappoint with Shergo Kurdi shooting an excellent 2 under par 70 to finish the day on level pair with 144 and securing the title of U16 County Champion. I started playing golf at the age of four. My father bought me a set of plastic golf clubs and I really took to it. I kept hitting the plastic balls over the fence into our neighbour’s garden. My father seeing this, took me for lessons at the Hilden Golf Range with Rupert Hunter.

Are there specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have? I work really hard on my shortgame and in particular, putting and chipping. It’s the part of the game that requires feel which is easily lost if not regularly practiced. I do monitor my results using Golf Datalab to diagnose any issues and to identify key strengths. What are your goals for 2019 and beyond? most challenging thing for me, especially when in addition to practice and playing I need to make time for gym sessions and pool sessions as well. In order to develop my game further, I will shortly be joining Colorado University Boulder Women’s Golf Team who play in the USA’s best college conference (PAC 12). Time management issues will be so important as for the next four years I have to balance golf with completing an engineering degree and coming back during breaks to play for Roehampton, Surrey and England! SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

My goals for 2019 are: • F inishing in the top three of the English Girls’ Order of Merit •B eing selected and playing for the Surrey Women’s Team •B eing selected and playing for the England Girls’ Team •B eing a starter for the Colorado University Boulder Women’s Golf team •B eing selected for the England Women’s Overseas Squad. I have managed to achieve some of

these goals already. Hoping to push on to achieve the remaining goals by year end. Long-term I hope that my golf will continue to develop so that I am able to have a great career on the LPGA and LET tours. What advice would you give to young players just starting on their journey in golf? Enjoy playing and play because you want to play. If you truly love golf and are passionate about it, then definitely pursue it – it’s a wonderful game. I would also say don’t worry about your scores! The more you play and practice, the better you will become and the scores will come down! Lastly, never quit! Golf is a competitive sport and you will find there are always different and difficult challenges to face. Your ability to push on when faced with these challenges makes all the difference. Finally, what are your other interests when you are not playing golf? I love playing football, tennis and cricket (I could turn it like Warnie!). I also love watching movies and travelling. 19

U14’S AT PETERSFIELD BRING HOME THE SUSSEX SALVER

F

or some reason the Sussex Salver always seems to be a bit of a banana skin for Surrey, who historically always make hard work of it and this year was to be no different.

10 of the 13 boys had prepared by attending the practice round on a very firm, bouncy, undulating golf course which presented some very interesting holes, number 4 in particular. For some

BOYS HANDICAP KNOCKOUT FINAL – GREEN DIVISION

of the boys, 6 of the 13 this was to be their last U14’s Salver. The team met early to run through notes and course management before the first three ball were underway. At the half way point Hampshire looked to be in front in a number of matches, although some were marginal and hung in the balance. All credit to Hampshire who have invested certainly more time and I am sure more money in to their junior golf and the organisation and hard work looks to be paying dividends. With a few holes to go Surrey looked to have edged into a slender lead and some very important halves were taken on the last. With the final group coming down the last, Surrey had managed to secure the Salver for another year without relying on this result.

OSCAR LENT WINS BOYS BLUE DIVISION KNOCK OUT SUTTON GREEN GOLF CLUB

Fergus Jacobs (Walton Heath) v Robert Muir (Royal Wimbledon) – Sutton Green

T

he match was played on a breezy afternoon when there was a constant threat of a shower but thankfully only a tenminute period when it rained. The first three holes were halved with Fergus then winning the 4th. The match score remained the same

20

until the par five 7th (Robert’s first shot hole) when an errant tee shot by Fergus resulting in a lost ball saw him concede the hole. Robert won the 8th and the 9th was halved in to see Robert go into the back nine, 1 up. On the 448 yards 15th, Robert’s final shot hole, he put his 7-iron approach shot only inches from the hole for a concession and to bring Fergus back to 1 up. Perhaps fittingly, Fergus won the 17th and the match with a fine 20ft birdie putt which was the only putt of more than 6-8 feet sunk by either player in the round. Fergus Jacobs won 3 & 1

The match went off without a hitch with a very even front 9 with never more than one in it. However, from 12, Oscar wound up the pressure and in the end, won 4&3. Oli can be very proud of himself as he kept it going so long considering Oscar was 2 over gross for 15 holes. Congratulations Oscar

MID AGE CHAMPIONSHIP AT CROHAM HURST Croham Hurst Golf Club was the venue hosting this year’s Mid-Age (26-54 years old) Championships which comprises of an individual and a team competition.

T

he morning round saw some excellent scoring with no less than 6 players shooting below par. Michael Piesse (Roehampton GC) shot a four under 67 with Frankie Boylan (Woldingham GC) just one shot behind on 68 and last year’s winner Jacob Aaholm (Reigate Hill GC) and Adrian Stewart (Tyrrells Wood GC) both on 69. In the afternoon the scores didn’t disappoint and this time seven players in the afternoon came back with scores below par, but it was Michael Piesse

who was able to hold his nerve and return a card one shot better than his morning round making him the overall winner with a magnificent 9 under par and a new course record!

The team event was won once again by Reigate Hill’s Jacob Aaholm and Ben Palmer with a combined score of 283, four better than their combined score last year.

ENGLAND’S SENIOR GOLFERS WIN THE EUROPEAN SENIOR MEN’S TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN DENMARK

T

he team started their tournament slowly, finishing in fourth place behind Scotland, Ireland and hosts Denmark after the 36-hole stroke play qualifier at Rungsted. However, they went on to beat both Sweden and Scotland 4-1 in the opening two rounds of the knockout match play before finishing the job with a 3½-½ victory over Ireland in the final. Ian Attoe and Alan Mew were in commanding form as the beat Karl Bornemann and Jim Carvill 6&5 in the foursomes. Rupert Kellock claimed a 2&1 win over Peter Sheehan in the singles and that was followed by a 5&4 win for Rich Jones against John O’Brien and a halve for Richard Norton against Steven Graham while Alan Condren claimed a consolation point for the Irish with a 3&2 victory over Paul Wharton. England Captain, Roy Smethurst, attributed the team’s success to their consistency and strength in the knockout foursomes: “All the players played well, it was the consistency

22

of the team that was key to success. Particularly the foursomes pairing in the knockout matches. Everyone played well in stroke play. It was England’s first victory in the championship since their win on home soil at Fairhaven in 2010 and it was a huge success considering the team hadn’t made the final for several years: “We won it in 2010 and I’ve been

captain for the last five years and I’m delighted to finally secure the win,” Smethurst added: “The four years prior we hadn’t been in the final at all – to win was a real achievement. “It was a fantastic week. To beat the Scots and the Irish is always a big thing and we get to play them again next week in the Senior Home Internationals.”

SURREY LADIES

WINDLESHAM PAIR CROWNED PING CHAMPIONS FOR 2019 Two new golfers from the Windlesham Golf Club in Surrey have been crowned as the PING Women’s Fourball Betterball champions for 2019.

C

harlotte Legg and Mary Dodds have both only been playing golf for a couple of years but that did not stop them amassing 46 points over the Thonock Park course at Gainsborough Golf Club in Lincolnshire to finish a single point ahead of Bev Allan and Rachael Warner from Branston Golf and Country Club in Staffordshire. Claire Sims and Rachel Stark from The Bedfordshire Golf Club, Diane Merrill and Sandra Huckle from Old Fold Manor Golf Club in Hertfordshire and Tracey Rogers and Cherry Clarke from Stock Brook Manor Golf Club in Essex all scored with Sims and Stark claiming third place on countback. “We’re thrilled to have won,” said 26-handicapper Legg, who only took up the game at the start of 2018. “When we won our club qualifier we were told we would have a great day here at

24

Gainsborough but it has exceeded all our expectations. It has been fantastic. We’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” Legg and Dodds registered six three-point holes while accumulating 22 Stableford points over the opening nine but it was on the second nine where they really made their mark with a further four three-point holes and a four-pointer at the short 16th where Dodds hit a seven-iron to three-feet and rolled in the resultant putt. “That was probably the key moment in the round for us,” admitted the 27-year-old mother of two who was once Assistant Secretary at West Hill Golf Club in Surrey before taking up the game two years ago. “We played pretty consistently. We had no really bad holes but it was the two at the 16th that made the difference. I can’t really believe it has happened.”

The PING Fourball Betterball Championship is run by England Golf with the winners coming through from an initial entry of over 15,000 women from more than 870 clubs. The top-50 pairs qualified for the Grand Final while the next 50 played in the previous day’s Plate Final. It was won by Jacqui Barson and Julie Beanland from Belton Park Golf Club in Lincolnshire who won by two points from Kathryn Bulman and Angie Taylor from Penrith Golf Club in Cumbria with 44 Stableford points. Andrea Holt and Jane Boxall from Bury Golf Club in Lancashire were third with 41 points . The victors only met in January but now play regularly together and have become firm friends. “We’re completely astounded and overjoyed,” said Barson. “It’s unbelievable, we’re still shaking, it’s just surreal.”

PRO TALK

BALL SPEED

THE POWER ISSUE

OFF THE TEE With PGA Professional

Sam Truman In a golfing sense, power comes from altering and increasing two forms of speed. Ball speed and club speed. There are multiple other factors that can affect how far a ball can travel, however we’re going to keep it simple. We will learn to change how fast the ball comes off the face of the club and we will explore some new ways to get the club moving faster.

One of the key reasons amateurs and pro’s lose distance is when they see a breakdown in strike pattern on the club face. Any off centre strikes often cause changes in spin rate, curve and most importantly ball speed. If we can increase our club speed and retain a centred strike, you will see an increase in overall distance. One of the best ways of monitoring strike is to use a face spray (usually an athletes foot spray will do the trick). Hit a group of shots with the face spray on and see what the pattern looks like?

CLUB SPEED We will split the club speed section into two parts – how to train speed in your practice and how to encourage greater speeds through technique in the swing. WEIGHTED CLUBS – REMOVING THE BALL AND FOCUSING ON INCREASING PEAK SPEED If you don’t have the time to spend hours in the gym, training your speed with items like speed sticks/ weighted clubs could be very useful! By learning to move a heavier club faster and faster over time, it’s inevitable that your body will be able to swing your normal clubs way faster on the golf course. Some people use swing speed radars to monitor the speed of these exercises (without hitting a ball). It’s often healthy (and fun) to learn how to swing the opposite way faster as well (right handed compared to left handed etc.).

TECHNIQUE HEEL UP – MAXIMISE YOUR BODY TURN AND CREATE A LONGER, FASTER SWING If you can create a big body turn and you can get the butt of the club travelling further back behind you, you have a greater chance of increasing speed on the way down. The heel up drill will help you maximise your hip turn and upper body rotation. To find this position simply go to the top of your normal backswing – pause – and then allow your lead heel to lift off the floor as your increase your turn back. Try to feel a nice big stretch across your body!

STEP DRILL – LEARN HOW TO SEQUENCE YOUR SWING FOR MAXIMUM SPEED AND EFFICIENCY This drill, loosely based on a rather famous golfing film, is superb for generating speed. The images below show the sequence of the swing. Start in your normal set up, drag your lead foot next to your trail foot. Swing back and then plant your lead foot before impact. If you don’t move the club away at the right time or if you plant the foot at the wrong time it will be very difficult to find the middle of the club and generate any speed. This drill will really teach you about proper weight transfer and how to correctly time and sequence your swing.

MILFORD GOLF CLUB

Spotlig

The transformation of Milford Golf Club near Godalming is complete and the redesigned golf course – which includes five new holes – is now open for play. And the club is currently offering a free round to local golfers who wish to come and see the changes.

S

ince the alterations were completed, golfers no longer face a dangerous crossing of a busy commuter road, which leads to Milford train station, to play a loop of three holes. For 25 years golfers have needed to cross Station Lane, which runs from Milford town centre to the railway station, twice during every round of golf to play three holes on land owned by the club. But from September 2019 Milford’s members have no longer needed to push their golf trollies across Station Road with trepidation. After an extensive redesign of its golf course, all 18 holes at Milford Golf Club now sit together on attractive wooded land to the southwest of the town centre. “Crossing the road to get to the other

28

part of the golf course could be a little hairy at times, especially at rush hour” said Simon Fowler, the club’s General Manager. “Now, our members and visitors have no such worries, and can concentrate on making birdies instead!” Golfers now enjoy a new start to their round at Milford, with a dramatically-redesigned 1st hole. It is now a short Par Four which dog-legs to the left, setting a beautiful scene for your approach shot to a contoured green surrounded by trees. The Par Three 2nd, surrounded by mounds which present a short-game challenge if you go astray, is another new hole, and there are also new back tees on the 11th, 12th and 13th holes. But the real story lies ahead. The final four holes at Milford Golf Club – three of them brand-new – are now a major

feature at the club, and will become a highlight of golf in the county. The closing stretch now begins with the most picturesque of the new holes, the 15th. This attractive tree-lined downhill Par Three, just 151 yards, has a stunning lakeside view from the green. A front bunker lies in wait for under-hit tee shots, and a steep drop-off behind the green spells disaster if you over-club. The new 362-yard Par Four 16th is Milford’s new Stroke Index 1. A demanding tee shot must clear the lake to find an undulating fairway which sweeps to the right and slightly uphill to the green. Big-hitters may be tempted to cut the corner, across dense woodland, but naturally there is plenty of risk involved if you want your reward. Miss the green to the right, and your day suddenly gets a lot worse.

SPOTLIGHT

The green on the 17th, a brand-new 165-yard Par Three, sits amidst a nest of treacherous bunkers, although the putting surface itself is generous in size. It’s a slight breather before you take on Milford’s 450-yard Par Four 18th, unchanged in the restoration, which already offers one of Surrey’s most attractive and dramatic final tee shots across a lake with trees to the right awaiting a slice. The original golf course was designed by BBC golf commentator and former Ryder Cup player Peter Alliss, in partnership with European Tour golfer Clive Clark. Milford’s clubhouse has also been refurbished, with more room for functions and private meetings, and a more attractive bar and restaurant area. The club, which has remained open

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

for play throughout the changes, held a grand opening of its new-look golf course on Sunday 1st September, with a golf tournament for the club’s members. “There is great excitement among our members that Milford now has a series of memorable feature holes” said Simon Fowler. “This is a big upgrade for our golf course, and will make for a much more enjoyable experience for our members who play here so frequently. “Our new holes are streets ahead of the ones which they have replaced, as regards both how beautiful they are to look at, and how challenging they are to play. “We have added enjoyment without adding too much length or difficulty. Milford has become a better test of golf, with even more appeal for our members and the wider golfing community.”

With women’s golf growing fast nationwide, Milford Golf Club is already one of the most femalefriendly in the country: more than one in five of its members are female, almost twice the national average. Fowler hopes that more women from the area will discover the club when word spreads of the improvements. “We hope to welcome many newcomers of both sexes from the local area to Milford this year, to help us celebrate our new-look golf club” he said. PSYCHOLOGY

IMPROVE YOUR GAME

WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR SWING... We all know half the battle with golf is mental. Some days you just know you’re going to have a good round and on others you walk onto the 1st tee knowing it’s just not your day. And of course, whatever you believe tends to be exactly what happens.

J

amie Burrows is a golf psychologist and mindset coach who specialises in helping professionals and amateurs master their mental approach and improve their game. He says: “I’ve been playing golf since I was 12 and I realised that most of the time, if I was having a bad game it was because of my nerves and a lack of confidence. Sometimes I’d lose my temper when things didn’t go my way and my outlook was ruining my game. I really wanted to be able to manage my emotions, enjoy the game and give myself the best possible chance of winning.” “Believe it or not, it is possible for everyone to be confident on every tee and not to feel nervous over a putt,”

continues Burrows. “We’ve all had that terrible game or shot that just continues to haunt us, no matter how long ago it was. Very often we fail to let those mistakes go and they stay with us. It is absolutely possible to put those experiences back in the past where they belong – it’s a matter of adjusting how you think.”

It sounds so simple when Jamie puts it like that, but the truth is that most of us need a little help to make that change. As part of his growing practice, Jamie is offering two hour mindset workshops for golf clubs and their members. During a recent session, golfers from Shirley Park Golf Club were shown not only how to influence their thinking, but also how to change their focus and develop a more positive approach to their game. Using tips and techniques used in other sports – Dame Kelly Holmes and Sir Roger Bannister both get a look in – Jamie shows participants how to help themselves improve their game. There is also an opportunity for people to bring along their own problems for a bit of advice and feedback. After the event, Shirley Park Club Captain, Barry Pearce said “Jamie’s excellent interactive workshop identified the little things that we can do to help ourselves think more positively before hitting a shot. There was much nodding in the audience as we recognised our own negative habits and those of our friends. Very illuminating and amusing!” If you’d like to hold a group workshop at your golf club, discuss team coaching or enquire about individual sessions, contact Jamie through his website jamieburrowsgolf.com

THE DELIGHTS OF YELVERTON Yelverton Golf Club is a delightful moorland course, designed by the renowned golf architect Herbert Fowler

T

he course has many interesting features. These include old mine workings, a ‘Leat’ (artificial watercourse dug into the ground) which was built in the 1790’s to provide water to Plymouth from Dartmoor. Fowler also added many sizeable banks and mounds with a limited number of fairway bunkers, this was typical of his trademark design. The generous fairways are lined with many hazards including, heather, gorse, bracken and small thorn

bushes, the penalties for missing the fairways are substantial. The geographic location also adds to its natural features and relatively easy walking landscape. The course shares its fairways with the native Dartmoor Ponies, sheep and cattle, combined with the often-testing weather creating a unique landscape for golf. Donald Steel Golf Architect wrote: “Yelverton strikes the perfect balance in testing the best players without terrorising the less good. The change to accommodate modern equipment is not necessary, it has stood the test of time because its defences are so natural. Never have I walked such a longestablished course without finding so little to comment, this is kin to going to

MEET THE PRO

Kat Chaszczewski MEET THE PRO

Kat Chaszczewski joined Hurtmore Golf Club as Head Teaching Professional in June 2019 after almost nine years as a full-time coach at Cranfield Golf Academy in West Sussex. As a PGA Fellow Professional, Kat is one of the highest status golf coaches in the country and loves working with players of all abilities, from complete beginners to elite amateurs. She has worked with England’s best amateur golfers and County players, and her passion for growing the game has seen her introduce over 500 new golfers into the game in the last five years. Kat uses Trackman and V1 video analysis in her lessons and is constantly striving to improve her knowledge and skill set. 34

At what age did you start playing golf and which club did you start at? I first tried golf aged 11 in Yorkshire but as my father was in the Army we moved around a lot so I did not start playing regularly until I was in my late 20’s. My first handicap was gained at Hurtmore Golf Club in the late 1990’s. Who was/is your biggest influence? My first Coach, Maxine Burton who was the Pro at Hurtmore for over 20 years. She got me going and helped light the fire. Since turning Pro and becoming a Coach I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside two renowned PGA Master Professionals, Scott Cranfield and Steven Orr. Both have had a huge impact on my coaching journey through sharing their own experiences and knowledge. Which is your favourite Surrey course (apart from the one you are resident at) and why? I have been out of the area for many years so my experience of playing Surrey

courses is fairly limited at the moment. However, of the courses I’ve played, my favourite has to be Worplesdon. I love Heathland courses and this one is stunning. Whilst it’s not the longest, it offers plenty to challenge golfers of all abilities, plus I had one of my lowest rounds there. Happy memories! Which is your favourite course worldwide? The Gary Player designed Mazagan course in Morocco. A fantastic links course overlooking the Ocean – simply stunning! Royal Birkdale comes a close second. I’m about to embark on a golf trip to Mauritius and am looking forward to playing two Top 100 courses in the world: the Heritage and Ile Aux Cerfs – so my #1 course might change!? What course is on your bucket list that you have not played yet? Kingsbarns – it’s a stunning location with a tonne of history!

Holing a full 9 iron shot for eagle on the 17th at Mid Sussex in a matchplay literally a few seconds after recalling and talking about a holed wedge shot played in an earlier round. The shot took the match to all square and I won on the 18th – I think my opponent was in shock!

What’s your favourite on course energy snack/drink? My go to is water, but if it’s exceptionally hot I tend to have a few raspberry sports drinks. I usually have an energy bar or a fruit roll up in my bag for energy. What advice would you give to the Surrey youngsters wanting to turn professional? Play as many different sports as you can for as long as you can. There’s no need to specialise early. SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

If you could change one aspect, rule or thing about golf, what would it be and why? Relief from a divot – I think golf is challenging enough without having to hit out of someone else’s divot, especially when you’ve hit the middle of the fairway. It just doesn’t seem logical to me.

What do you enjoy doing off the course? Cinema, DIY, reading and travel. I’ve combined my love of organisation, travel and golf to offer a variety of golf trips in the UK and abroad. I am currently planning a variety of trips to UK, Spain, Portugal and Thailand and as mentioned above, heading to Mauritius this month. Please do contact me if you’re interested in finding out more – trips cater for all budgets and ability.

ANYONE? Golfers will soon be able to take a swing at making their own gin at one of the country’s top golf resorts as a new craft distillery is set to open at the Vale Resort in south Wales.

V

isitors will be able to distil, bottle and take home their own bespoke bottle of gin, in the basement of the 400-year old Hensol Castle, located in the grounds of the Vale Resort, which is being converted into a craft spirit distillery, bonded warehouse, gin school and visitor experience as part of a £7 million redevelopment programme. Following a round on one of the championship courses at the Vale Resort, golfers will be able to book a tour of the distillery, learn about the history of gin as well as Hensol Castle, discover the botanicals that go into different gins and enjoy a gin tasting at the cocktail bar. The new Hensol Castle Distillery is a joint venture between the Leeke family, who own The Vale Resort and Leekes, and the Mallows family who own Bottlers and Distillers Wales. Paul Beddoe, marketing director at the Vale Resort and Hensol Castle, said: “We’re transforming the 19th

36

hole! Golfers already flock to the Vale Resort for the quality of our courses – and now we are offering them another compelling reason to visit. After all, where else can you enjoy a gin you’ve made yourself, exactly to your taste after playing on courses that have been used in, European Tour events and PGA championships?” The craft gin market is booming in the UK. According to figures from The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), there are more than 100 different brands of gin in the UK, with 73 million bottles sold to the domestic market in 2018, worth £2.1 billion. Combined sales of gin, both home and overseas, have broken £2.5 billion, and Britain now exports more gin than beef. The once derelict 17th century Hensol Castle, which has been used as a backdrop in BBC dramas including Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes and Torchwood, has already been transformed into a first-class wedding and conference destination

by the owners of the Vale Resort. The introduction of a top-end restaurant will follow the opening of the craft distillery, which is set to launch later this year. Mr Beddoe added: “We are constantly improving the experience we offer to our golfers, including a £650,000 investment in state-of-theart golf course and greens equipment, including new GPS buggies. This commitment to being the best is one of the reasons why we were named Wales’ Best Golf Hotel for the last two years running in the World Travel Awards. “Providing another attraction that golfers can enjoy during their time at the Vale Resort is part of our strategy to make sure we attract golfers to the Vale Resort – and that they return time and time again.” The Vale Resort Hensol Park, Hensol Vale of Glamorgan CF72 8JY 01443 667 800 www.vale-hotel.com

N

estled a mile off the Silverado Trail, which runs the entire length of Napa Valley, lies the Silverado resort. Turning into the mansion, one will be forgiven for thinking you have arrived on the set of the movie Gone with the Wind such is the imposing nature what is actually only the administrative buildings. Consisting of two courses – the North and the South – Silverado has been home to both the Champions PGA tour, and the current main PGA tour – where recently the American professional season commences. It was a delight, to have a room 30 yards from the practice ground and 50 yards from the first tee on the North course. Staying at Silverado, even for one night, and having access to such great practice facilities can only improve your game. Having the William Hill vines across the road from the 3rd hole, can only salivate the taste buds! To the course... the land undulates nicely, with no steep climbs or drops, but if you like ‘parkland’ style courses, the North fits the bill beautifully. Mature tress etch out the fairways and typical penal bunkering marks this down as a re-worked Trent Jones Jnr course. The recent acquisition of the property by a consortium led by Johnny Miller, means his design input has freshened the architecture and given it a 21st century feel. The coming season on tour will see

the North course host The Safeway Open for the 4th time on the PGA Tour. This writers favourite holes were the magical 11th a 174yd par three over water with carry all the way. Like Augusta’s famous 12th the wind swirls in the trees and club selection can be pivotal in posting a good score. Later on the back nine, the 17th is a shortish dogleg left par four. Driving into position on the right side of the ‘cut and prepared’ as ‘Radar’ would say on Sky Golf, is absolutely essential. Left and the tall pine trees block your way to the putting surface and gone are your hopes of par, let alone birdie. Evenings at Silverado can start with a stroll to the Grill Room, next to the Pro Shop, where the menu is 5-star along with the local wines! Those of more adventurous disposition, might prefer a two mile trip into Napa itself where you will find dozens of delightful restaurants with varying styles of ambiance to suit everyone’s taste. As for the secondary reason to be in Napa – the wine – there is an element of confusion over just how many wineries there are. Some say 400, some say 1200... it all depends on whether one classifies them as a ‘winery’ or vineyard if it has a tasting room, or indeed if it produces but doesn’t have a venue to sample the nectar. In any event, there are more than enough to get seriously delayed in arriving at your next destination, further up the

Valley, near the town (they call them city in these parts) of St. Helena – The Meadowood Resort and Spa. As for the golf... if there’s is a better short course in America, I’ll be amazed. This shear golfing heaven. The resort and the facilities ‘ain’t too shabby’ either! Dotted around the course (once a rice farm) and tennis courts are a myriad of wooden chaletstyle rooms or if you will – cabins, that all have a style and charm to please the most fastidious of tastes. Our room, pleasingly sheltered from the sun by lovely cork oak trees and 20 yards from the 8th green was sumptuous, quiet and stylish. The whole feeling at Meadowood is of quiet, understated class. Staff could not be more attentive, yet unobtrusive. The food both at breakfast and dinner is again 5-star, but if you book to eat in Meadowood’s ‘The Restaurant’ put that up a notch to 6-star. It is, after all, one of very few venues with three Michelin stars. Nearby, in Yountville, Thomas Kellers ‘The French Laundry’ competes on an continued on page 40

equal footing, and those fortunate to sample both might need a lottery win to reimburse their outgoings! Looking at the course card map and assessing the sundry yardages, there seemed to be no real obstacles to scoring well and hitting handicap. But looking at the topography and seeing it for the first time, maybe a reassessment of that might be needed. Indeed on the first, a mere 154yds it all looks ‘easy’ dead flat and no real trouble, but that belies what’s to come. The second is a mere 163yds over this challenging and deceptive par three. Two strategically placed bunkers front the green, but it is what you can’t clearly see from the tee that may cause the most havoc if you happen to mis-hit your ball. Lots of little hollows filled with native plants as well as myriad rocks!

40

And so it goes, seven more delicious holes, until you end up with a beast of a par three over two ponds the final one protecting front and right of the green 195 yds away. A total card wrecker. A visit to Doug Pike’s – the head pro – hi-tech golf training facility will surely embrace your game with a new perspective. In one fell swoop he quickly identified my swing problem and fixed it with a most simple solution. I am a new man... well golfer anyway! The glory of Meadowood is that it embraces a lot of leisure and relaxation pastimes. It might be ‘old school’ but I have only ever once seen a better croquet lawn, that was at The Hurlingham Club! Spa and wellness seems to be the vogue ‘catch-all’ at the moment and the centre here is renowned to be

the best in California. That might, therefore, equate with ‘The USA’ ! Swimming and fitness centre’s are tucked away under the tree canopy as you enter the estate. Whilst we didn’t experience this side of things they looked top notch. Go stay, go experience... you might not want to check out. But of course when you do, there are the hundreds of ‘delights of the vine’ to sample around the towns that make up the Napa Valley. One fun way to sample these delights is to catch the Wine Train in Napa town and journey up to St. Helena and back... it takes in many famous vineyards and offers tastings and great lunch and dinner menus. With no driving to worry about, its a perfect way of celebrating the grape.

REVIEWS

BJM PUTTER GRIPS Not just a grip – a complete putting system Holding the putter the way we do has finally been questioned, investigated and documented. If you look at the way we should hold a putter to achieve the correct putting stoke then it makes perfect sense to make the putter grips larger, fatter and with a shape that allows the palms of the hands to turn comfortably up or palms under the bottom of the grip. How we connect the hands becomes obsolete simply because we have

reduced the mobility of the joints in the hands and arms by turning the palms up. Turning the palms up has a major chain reaction in achieving a more consistent putting stroke, in fact using a palms up hold system also creates another major chain reaction in maintaining the putter face perpadictual to the target at impact.

The grip is teardrop shaped and when gripping this with your palms up and your thumbs to the side, your elbows naturally touch the torso and your wrist and hand mobility is reduced dramatically.... this encourages a solid bio mechanical putting base.

Being someone who lacks confidence on the shorter putts and with a tendency for my hands to overtake my stroke, controlling the face of the putter has always been an issue.

ON THE COURSE: I have played a few times and have been delighted with the improvement on the inside 6 foot putts and have had no issue with my lag putting.

Meeting with BJM was a revelation, using their putting system we hit 5 putts using my traditional grip and then fitted my putter with the BJM grip and compared the stats and in one area an impressive 80 % improvement was seen.

This is one product that is staying in my bag. www.bjmputtergripsuk.com

THE ACTIVE POSTURE SHIRT 2.0 Featuring patented NeuroBand-technology it activates and stimulates shoulder and back muscles to improve your posture.

TRIED & TE STED

As a person who suffers from back pain and in turn bad posture, having something like the Posture Shirt available to me is a welcome relief.

The Posture Shirt 2.0 from Active Posture is medically approved, inspired by kinesio taping and has been developed by an international team of doctors and physiotherapists to provide daily support, whether you’re sitting, standing or on the move.

48

I tried the shirt out first at the driving range and instantly saw results. It provides support and relief from back pain and compels you to stand in a better position without even noticing you’ve done it. I could feel the difference in my stance whilst practicing, but the real difference showed when I left the range and for the first time in many years had no pain in my lower back. I took it next on a full round and again found it supportive and minimised the back pain I normally endured. It is essential that the shirt is tight-fitting in order to achieve optimal effect, so ensure

you pick the correct size (if unsure pick the smaller size). For those suffering from shoulder pain or certain conditions which make it difficult to put on tight-fitting clothing, there is a zipper version of this shirt. www.activeposture.co.uk
