GROVES FLIES HIGH TO WIN IN DUBAI

Pic: Getty Images

George Groves has claimed a well-deserved victory in the inaugural EDGA Dubai Finale.

T

he world number one and reigning English disability champion earned his place in the field after winning his national title at Stoke by Nayland in September. The Surrey golfer made the most of the opportunity and rounds of 77 and 82 on the Earth Course were good enough to give him a three shot triumph over America’s Chad Pfeifer. In July, Groves finished second in the opening EDGA event of the season

6

held during the week of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in East Lothian. This week there was to be no denying the man from Horne Park Golf Club. Groves took centre-stage in the event which ran parallel to the European Tour’s finale to the 2019 season – the DP World Tour Championship. He said: “It’s fantastic. I’m going to go home very proud of myself, celebrate with my friends and family. It will be really good. “This tour has really changed my life. I think it’s just changed me as a person, changed me as a golfer. I’m just really happy that I’ve actually managed to get into stuff like that. “It’s really good to get us involved and on TV and to show other people with

disabilities to get more into golf and, instead of lounging around at home, be confident in themselves and get out there and show what you can do.” Groves has Erb’s Palsy, a condition which leaves him with 20 per cent strength in his left arm after a medical accident during birth. However, that has not stopped him from rising to the top of the rankings for golfers with disability. “When I was younger I was a footballer and I was told to do exercise for my arm,” added Groves. “My parents said do golf. I went to the range one day and I thought this could be something, so I took golf up. “To come out and win this, be World Number One, is just incredible. I’m pretty sure I’ve 100 per cent done the right choice.”

SURREY TALK

ON THE TEE WITH COUNTY SECRETARY, STEVE MCNEILL Welcome to the first and what will be an ongoing quarterly column from Surrey Golf.

Surrey Golf

S

ince taking the reigns as County Secretary in May 2018 it has without doubt been an interesting, sometimes challenging but most enjoyable time. 2019 was, as it always is, a busy year in the county office, in addition to all the events, championships, knock outs, matches, coaching, course rating, County Academy Programme, etc. we had the new rules of golf come in force. The seminars presented by our volunteer rules officials were a great success and were well supported by club members from across the county. If you are reading this and would be interested in training to becoming a rules official, or a volunteer helping with Surrey events, please get in touch with the office. 2020 I’m sure will be no different with the introduction of the World Handicapping System, which is due to go live in November. This is a major change for everyone involved in golf but is designed to make it easier to understand. This system will also make it fairer for those who play abroad be that on holiday or playing

8

in competitions. As with any change, there will no doubt be lots of questions and to assist with this, we are holding workshops for the club personnel responsible for dealing with handicaps at the clubs. At the same time, we will continue with the rating of the courses, to ensure we are ready for November. The county teams, from the U12’s to the seniors continue to go from strength to strength, with the county training programme continuing to develop young golfers of all standards, some who will go onto play for their country and even turn pro as others have in the past but the majority becoming club golfers. The RookieTour is not only a major factor in identifying and developing young golfers who are already in the golfing system, but also bringing in new players to this great game. The ever-popular county card events, which are, to all intents and purposes a county society, have two new courses added for 2020. We often get asked about these events, they are open to all male adult affiliated members of Surrey County Golf. Which brings me onto the

county cards. Every member gets a card as part of the affiliation fee, some counties still charge separately for this, but we in Surrey don’t. The card can be used to get a discount when visiting clubs, not only across Surrey but anywhere in England, although not all clubs participate, so please make sure you call them first. To find out more about all the events we run for golfers of all ages and standards throughout the year just visit the Surrey web site of call us at the office and either Caroline, Jane, Sue or myself will be more than happy to assist you. We are here to help all our members. Lastly, I would like to say a massive thanks to all the clubs across the county who have hosted an event, match or championship and to those who would like to do so please call me, it’s great to get people playing at different venues. All that remains to be said is to have a great 2020 golfing season and most importantly enjoy the great game.

Answering your questions about back pain and golfing Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital Like other sports, golf can produce low back and spine injuries. In fact low back pain is the most common ailment suffered by golfers of all ages. An estimated 23% of professionals play with back pain. We caught up with our Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, Mr Guy Paremain, for his advice on 4 common back pain myths:

Why come to Nuffield Hospital if you are having problems with your back? Our highly experienced expert Orthopaedic Consultants are renowned for their consistently successful surgical outcomes. We offer rapid access to Orthopaedic treatment, in a state-of-the-art facility. We are not-for-profit and reinvest back into developing our services and improving the quality of patient healthcare. What is your Recovery Plus programme and how can it help me?

1. Will an MRI show me what’s wrong with my back? An MRI scan is a very helpful and reliable form of imaging. They are great at showing problems such as slipped discs, however, they aren’t always able to tell us why you are in pain.

Recovery Plus is our staple recovery programme, available free to private self-funding patients combining the Nuffield services. You’ll receive a personal recovery programme and coach, health check, exercise and diet advice and a 3-month gym membership.

2. Is surgery my only option as I’ve been having back pain for years? No, not at all. There are specific problems that can be treated surgically but most spinal complaints are best treated non-operatively. Exercise and painkillers are the main types of treatment.

Our Orthopaedic surgeons We have a range of Orthopaedic Surgeons at our hospital, specialising in many areas from spinal to hip & knee and foot & ankle.

3. Should I stay in bed when my back is in agony? Doctors have previously recommended long periods of bed rest, but this has been shown to be quite wrong. We now encourage patients to remain active, early mobilisation generally leads to quicker recovery. 4. Will I be immobile for a long time after spinal surgery? No, generally you will get up the same day or the day after surgery. Most of my patients spend one or two nights in hospital before they go home.

COURSE RATING & WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM

W

ith the proposed introduction of the Worldwide Handicapping System, currently scheduled for November 2020, Surrey Golf is responsible for rating all Golf Clubs affiliated to Surrey Golf in accordance with the USGA’s Course & Slope Rating requirements. In accordance with these requirements, courses may only be rated between mid-April and early October, and must be led by a nominated Lead Rater, accompanied by at least one other Lead Rater and additional Assistant Raters as required. Course ratings usually require two visits per course, one to assess all greens and Par 3s and a second to assess the Par 4s & 5s, however, in some cases, e.g. where there are numerous sets of tees to be rated, a further visit may be necessary. The greens & Par 3s visit usually consists of two team members, who can be on the course for two to three hours and the Par 4s & 5s visit usually consists of between four and six team members, who can be on the course for three to five hours. Our team of volunteers led by Chris Cornish, have now rated 89 golf courses at 78 golf facilities (the term ‘golf facility’ has been adopted as

10

several have more than one course and are home to one or more affiliated Golf Clubs – e.g. the Richmond Park golf facility is home to Richmond Park GC, Putney Park GC & White Lodge GC). The remaining 18 golf facilities, all of which have already been contacted by Chris Cornish, for the required ‘Rating Information’, will be rated during 2020. New Course & Slope Rating Certificates will be issued, to those facilities that have already been rated, early in the New Year and, to those facilities that are to be rated next year, immediately upon completion of their Rating. Surrey Golf is always looking for new volunteers, particularly those willing to be trained to become future Lead Raters, so please don’t hesitate to contact Steve McNeill or Chris Cornish, if interested. World Handicap System The World Handicap System is launching in November 2020. It is designed to welcome more players, to make golf easier to understand and to give all golfers a handicap which is portable across the world. It replaces the six different systems currently use in more than 80 countries. It has been developed by the R&A

and The United States Golf Association (USGA), supported by the world’s handicapping authorities, including CONGU, which represents the four home countries of Great Britain and Ireland. Surrey Golf will be running four workshops during the month of March 2020 to get clubs more acquainted with the changes coming to the handicap system. The workshops are aimed at the appropriate club personnel with a maximum of three places available per club.

If your club hasn’t already registered please visit the England Golf website www.englandgolf.org/handicapsrules/whs-2020/.

A Victorian hotel in Croydon’s countryside In 1929, five-time British open champion, JH Taylor was asked to design a golf course. Today this is the Selsdon Estate Golf Club. This challenging 18-hole par 72 golf course takes around four-and-a-half hours to complete if walking. In addition to the nine par 4 holes, there are five par 5 holes, four of which measure over 500 yards and look out for the 17th hole – a memorable par 3 from an elevated tee across a valley. There is also a range of corporate golf days, golf break packages, and membership options to enjoy from one-night with a round of golf, to a three-night stay with unlimited golf. All packages come with evening dinners and buffet breakfasts.

NEW CLUB SUPPORT OFFICER FOR SURREY England Golf have a new Club Support Officer for Surrey. Steve Doughty took up his new position in the late Summer of 2019 and is very much looking forward to the challenge of helping and giving support to Surrey Clubs.

S

teve took over from Caroline Hardy-Evans, who is now Surrey’s Assistant County Secretary and Amanda Newey, who were the previous officers for the county. Steve arrives at England Golf having acquired a lot of experience in the golf industry, spending 16 years as The European Tour’s statistician, before moving to the PGA in England (South) as a Tournament Controller and latterly as Assistant General Manager at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club. He has been actively involved with the rules of golf, having refereed for a number of organisations, including The European Tour, PGA, England Golf and for Sunningdale Golf Club, at their prestigious Sunningdale Foursomes. Since 2011 he has been a member of the Surrey County Rules Panel and with the introduction of the new rules in January 2019, re-qualified to Level 3 standard and is a member of the England Golf Rules Panel. “A key area of my role is making myself the first point of contact for all clubs who are wanting help and support. It is my aim to engage with as many clubs as possible going forward. The Support Officer is the link between the golf clubs, counties and England Golf Club.” This type of work requires a lot of relationship-building with clubs in order to establish a connection with secretaries, general managers,

12

head professional, senior committee members, junior organisers and club welfare officers. “I am now hoping to use my knowledge of golf and of Surrey to benefit the clubs, the county and England Golf. It is really exciting to meet new clubs that I am not familiar with and re-connect with clubs and staff who I know.” The emphasis of help given by the Club Support Officers has changed to offer more ‘tailored support’ in a host of different areas. This can range from governance, safeguarding, offering membership surveys, recruitment and retention, creating business plans, junior golf and marketing. “I think it is paramount that a club understands its

market and knows what their members want, especially as every club is different.” Apart from engaging with the clubs, another facet of the job is to help the Surrey County and Surrey Ladies Golf Association by attending committee meetings, World Handicap System presentations and safeguarding workshops. “I am here to assist clubs the best way I can by offering high quality support.” Steve can be contacted on: 07710 712 721 or email steve.doughty@englandgolf.org SDEnglandGolf

PUTTENHAM GOLF CLUB DONATION HELPS VITAL NHS DEMENTIA RESEARCH

F

unds donated by members of a golf club in Puttenham Surrey have enabled local NHS services to buy state-of-the-art equipment to support the latest in dementia research. Members of Puttenham Golf Club have donated a total of £4,600 to the research team at Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, a registered charity which trials new treatments and support for local people with dementia.

14

Terry Smith, last year’s men’s captain, chose the NHS charity after speaking to his good friend - and fellow former captain - Bill Barnes about his experiences at the Abraham Cowley Unit in Chertsey. Bill is a carer for his wife who lives with dementia. He told Terry about his respect for the research team’s lead doctor, Professor Ramin Nilforooshan, and his work. “I realised having spoken to him that it would be nice to do something for them. We all know someone who has been touched by this horrid condition and we wanted to do something to help them find a way of stopping it.” said Terry. Terry went on to organise a series of events and activities, ranging from collection tins on the bar to a black-tie dinner attended by over 100 people. The evening event included a guest talk from the former BBC sports commentator Henry Blofeld OBE,

Above: Bill & Terry with Professor Nilforooshan Bottom left: Bill & Terry with research team and new equipment

plus a presentation from Professor Nilforooshan about the latest developments in dementia research. “We didn’t know how much we’d raise but our club members were very generous and we are absolutely delighted with the results.” Terry concluded. The funds have enabled the NHS team to buy a specialist therapy chair and urine analyser for the department. Professor Ramin Nilforooshan said: “We are most grateful to Terry and Bill, and of course to members of Puttenham Golf Club, for their generosity.

SURREY MASTERS AND ORDER OF MERIT FINALE 2019 At Walton Heath (New course)

T

he leading Order of Merit players and various championship winners are invited to this final event of the year, the Surrey Masters, the event also counts as the final points scoring opportunity for the players and determines the final standings for the Order of Merit itself. Past County President and past Chairman, Roger Vincent started the players for their 18 holes on the New Course at the fantastic Walton Heath Golf Club. This Masters competition was totally dominated by Hindhead’s David

Corben with a fantastic round of 64, eight under par! Normally you would expect a three under par 69 to be good enough to take the trophy but not today, meaning that Edward Keep (Clandon Regis) and Jacob Aaholm (Reigate Hill) had to settle for 2nd and 3rd respectively, Edward just pipping Jacob on count-back. For the Order of Merit, once the points were added, the final standings were: • Champion: Jacob Aaholm (Reigate Hill) • Runner-up: David Corben (Hindhead)

Main pic: David Corben and Steve McNeill Masters 2019. Above: Jacob Aaholm OoM winner 2019

• 3rd place: Frankie Boylan (Woodcote Park) • 4th place: Will Dugdale (Sunningdale) Many congratulations to Jacob for retaining the Order of Merit that he won last year and congratulations to David Corben for his fantastic 64 to win the 2019 Masters. Afterwards the players enjoyed some sandwiches and drinks before the presentation of the trophies and medals by Roger Vincent.

KELSO CUP FINAL Guildford v Reigate Heath – played at The Drift The format for this competition is handicapped Four ball Better Ball knock out. With a high number of clubs putting pairs into this competition it is split into the East and West sections with the winners of each section Final then playing in the Grand Final. Representing Guildford 1 in the West section were Graham Gosling and Steve Lampard, who had played five rounds to get to their section Final where they overcame Hoebridge 2. Likewise, Karl Edwards and Tony Brooks

16

for Reigate Heath who beat Coombe Wood 2 in the East section Final. With the pairs closely matched this was a tightly fought Final, both pairs gave their all for 18 hole final and although Guildford were 2up at one time, it was all square or one up either way throughout the game. In the end, it went to the 18th with Reigate Heath 1up on the tee, so a half was enough to secure the title and they did just that. Congratulations to Karl Edwards and Tony Brooks the 2019 Surrey County Golf Kelso Hamilton Champions.

T

he playing format of this club competition is two pairs of Four Ball Better Ball match play. Both finals were started by Surrey Golf Chairman, Terry Christy. The U18’s pairs were first on the course. The first match was won by

U18 Winners Foxhills

Foxhills pair, Alexandra Jakins and Abbi Rowlands who beat Cuddington’s Dexter Daly and James Crossett 2&1. In the second match there was a reversal of fortune and the Cuddington pair of Jack Howes and Callum Furmidge beat Foxhills pair Charlotte

Benford & Fletcher Rees, 2&1. The draw meant that the first pair from each club would play in a sudden death format starting from the 10th tee. The match couldn’t have been closer and went to the third play-off hole where the team of Alexandra Jakins and Abbi Rowlands secured the win for the second year running for Foxhills. The U14 final, saw the first Horne Park pair of Benjamin Benetar and Ben Kingsley winning their match 4&3 from Foxhills pair Sean Barnfather and Cody Fernandes and the second Horne Park pair, Oliver Watts and Harrison Brindley beating Jo Gould and James Brash 4&2 from Foxhills to take the U14 Rookie League title for 2019. ELLEN YATES When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration? I started to play golf when I was five. One day, I was at the driving range with my dad, one of the Pros approached us and suggested we should join the group lessons. My first competition was in January 2012, three months before my 7th birthday. My inspiration is my dad. We’ve played lots of golf together, but now he mostly just drives me around to various golf competitions which he seems to enjoy. Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream fourball? Matt Wallace, Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson. At the moment I think Viktor Hovland is one of the most exciting players to watch. My dream fourball is Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy and Eddie Pepperell. What are your career highlights so far? My best result so far is my second place in the scratch competition of the 2019 English Girls U14 Open Amateur Championship. I also won the net competition and I’m very proud to have been selected for England South Region Squad for the last three years. I was made Captain of the Surrey Girls squad at the 2019 County Match Week; qualified to represent English Schools in an international match versus 20

Scotland; scored my first ever Albatross at the R&A Under 16/U14 British Girls Championships in Fulford on the first hole and also won two club championships. How often do you play/practice? During the Summer months I play or practice almost everyday. During the winter I train regularly with the England South Region Squad and practice as much as the weather and daylight allows. Is finding time to play whilst managing school/work etc difficult? I try to keep on top of my school work as best I can. I have just started in Year 10 so the workload has increased in preparation for my GCSE’s next year! If I can’t get to the range on a school night I will either do some indoor drills or some S&C. Are there specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have? As part of the England Regional Squad I provide practice and playing stats each month for their performance monitoring, which means I have to log all my activities. I also use a GameGolf tracker to monitor my on course stats. It’s also very useful to track club yardages. My driver and fairway woods are the strongest clubs in my bag, but recently I have been focussing more on short

game and in particular distance control. I have been coached by Ben Ross at Windlesham Academy for four years and we have regular sessions to identify what areas I need to focus on. What are your goals for the future? Long term I would like to be selected for England National Squad and I hope to go to play college golf in America. My ultimate goal is to become a playing professional and to make the people who give me so much support proud. What advice would you give to young players just starting on their journey in golf? Have fun. I have made some wonderful friends through golf and we have a lot of fun when we get together socially! You should also have other interests outside of golf. It is important to be realistic – golf is a hard sport, it takes a lot of effort and dedication. Finally, you really need to have a good education and working hard to achieve that is as important as anything else! Finally, what are your other interests when you are not playing golf? I like to play many sports but golf takes up most weekends. I play netball and basketball, I love athletics, particularly the 200m. I am learning to play the guitar and I am loving it! PRO TALK

MAKING THE MOST OF WINTER GOLF With PGA Professional Sam Truman

A

s winter rolls in its often a time for golfing hibernation. Courses struggle with condition and harsher weather withholds most golfers from playing as much as they would like to. However, there are a few ways of making winter practice sessions as productive as possible. It’s so easy to go to the driving range and buy 100 golf balls and get caught up in an inefficient process of hitting balls aimlessly down the range, rarely with a target or goal in mind. Some simple changes in habit and planning could make this your winter to properly prepare for the 2020 season ahead. DRIVING RANGES As mentioned previously, it’s so easy to get caught up in hitting lots of golf balls on the range without having any purpose to your practice. Once we enter into the process of hitting lots of golf balls in a short period of time we remove ourselves so much from a manner which is representative of on course play. Below I’m going to show you a few ways on making sure you make the most of your practice sessions.

from each other. Some tasks might be technique focused and others maybe be outcome focused i.e. hitting towards a target or nominating a way for the ball to get there (draw or fade etc). Pressurised practice If we can raise the intensity of how we go about our range work, when we step back onto that first tee of the golf course it shouldn’t feel as daunting. Pressurised practice doesn’t have to make up the whole of your practice, however I would always recommend at least some part of every session to have a testing component. Maybe start with a driving challenge whereby you set out a left and ride side of a fairway using driving range features and see how many drives you can get to finish within the fairway?

Or using greens/flags on the driving range, can you nominate a target and see how close you can land your golf ball to your intended target without missing on either the left or right side of the target (pre-nominated)? ON COURSE PRACTICE I feel that on course practice is often under-utilised by a lot of amateur golfers. Seeing as it’s the context of the game whereby your handicap or scoring ability is truly tested. You’re not judged/scored on the range! Here’s a couple of new formats for your on course practice: Worst ball One of the toughest tasks for golfers to take on, but one of the best in regards to revealing what standard your game

Planning Get into the habit of writing things down. Get a notebook and dedicate that to being your golfing diary. Could you outline a few key targets or goals for your practice session? The second component to the planning stage would be structuring how you’re going to use your time/ allocation of golf balls. Segmenting a basket of 50 balls up into 10x groups of 5 shots – could you create 10 sets of tasks that vary

is at. There’s a very famous quote in our beloved game that – “you’re not judged on what your good shots look like you’re judged on what your bad shots look like”. I would suggest using this drill for 9 holes at a time because it takes a little longer to complete than a normal 9 hole round. Start by hitting two tee shots off the first hole. You then pick the worst tee shot, this is under your discretion, or equally a playing partner could choose for you (could be dependant on lie or being blocked out etc). You then hit two shots from the worst tee ball position, and you then subsequently choose the worst shot of the next two shots. You do this until one of the shots ends up in the hole. What do you score? What were the differences between the shots during the round? Tactical miss drill This drill contains an unusual concept but is superb for working on your

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

scoring areas of the game (short game and putting). The aim of the game, weirdly enough, is to miss the green in regulation play. Miss the green you say? Yes, miss the green. This is a points based game, and the scoring is as follows: c 1 point for missing the green in regulation c Minus 1 points for hitting the green in regulation If you miss the green: c An additional 2 points for getting up and down c An additional 1 point for getting down in 3 This is a great format which helps you evaluate where the best miss is around the green. If you can miss the green in a good spot you have a much better chance of getting up and down. And look on the bright side, if you keep accidentally hitting the green there’s no excuse to not hit the green when you’re actually aiming for it, right?

FITNESS

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR FITNESS. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR GAME By Sam Heffer

S

tiff knees, painful elbows, recurring lower back issues? Sometimes it can feel that this game is getting away from you and that the time you’re able to spend on the course is getting ever closer to coming to an end. It’s a horrible feeling not knowing when you might have to pack it all in but credit to you for religiously showing up in spite of all the doubt from the endless niggles. I get it. You must truly love the game. So what if you never had to question whether or not it was soon time to pack it all in? It would be a pretty relieving experience would it not? Much like the joy of flushing a 7 iron or splitting the fairway down the 18th after a few duffers or a torrid round with the big stick... “See it is in there somewhere!” Physical fitness is becoming more and more prevalent in the modern game of golf to the point where tour pros are now being recognised as athletes. As such the message is starting to spread: Take charge of your fitness. Take charge of your game. The common belief is that getting fit is the missing ingredient to hitting the ball further, and

if you don’t care about hitting it further then there’s no point in getting any fitter. This isn’t really helped when you consider that TV footage rarely show anything other than booming drives and plenty of birdies. Whilst it’s true that tour pros will be working on their strength and power in the gym to maintain and increase their distance, don’t neglect the fact that they’ll also be keeping themselves fit for a far more important goal: Reduce their chance of getting injured so they can play enough golf to make loads of cash. What if the goal of the club golfer trying to get fitter for the game wasn’t necessarily to hit the ball further but to be able to build a repeatable swing fit for any course at any time? To be more specific... what if getting fit had the purpose of playing pain free golf? The best part is the more pain free golf being played then the more opportunities there are for biproducts such as hitting the ball further & getting the handicap down. You’d certainly never be questioning whether it was time to pack it all in. Why not try and get started with these exercises that you can do anywhere?

REVERSE TOE TOUCH

Keep feet flat on the floor and bend your knees as much as you need to hold underneath your toes. Try to keep a flat back as best you can.

Keep holding underneath your toes and look to straighten your legs and find a stretch in the back of your thighs.

BIRD DOG DIAGONALS

Start on all fours with hands under shoulders and knees under hips. Come back down and repeat for 5-10 reps whilst controlling your breathing.

Keep your torso as still as possible whilst slowly pushing one leg behind you whilst reaching forward with the opposite hand. Hold for 3-5 seconds before slowly coming down and repeating on the other side for 4-6 reps

CHALLENGE TOUR LIFE 2019 was a steady and consistent year for me and resulted in my retaining full playing rights on the Challenge Tour for next year. Although it was disappointing to not graduate onto the main tour either via the top15 on the ‘Race to Majorca’ or through qualifying school, I feel like I have built a solid platform and hopefully learned a lot from my travels. T

his year I played in 22 Challenge Tour events, two main tour events and one mixed event. I made the cut in 17 tournaments (68%) and altogether played in 81 competitive professional rounds in 42 strokes under par for the year. I travelled to 21 countries, many for the first time, including Kenya, Germany, Jordan, China, Finland and Morocco and only missed two events all season, in Switzerland and the final event in Majorca. After a combined Challenge Tour/ Staysure Tour/LET event in Jordan, the season begun in April with the Turkish Airlines Challenge. Although I missed my first two cuts here and in Spain, I then settled down well with two solid finishes in successive events in the Czech Republic. Twenty two events between April and October made for a busy schedule with very few weeks off. It has been a learning experience coping with all the travel while trying to maintain a high standard of golf. My longest stretch this year was seven tournaments in a row, although with hindsight it was probably one or two competitions too many! I was pleased with my general level of fitness and stamina though, and put this down to my early season preparation. It was good to play virtually every event to see where my physical limits were. My best finishes of the year came in France and Morocco. I finished T10th

in the Hauts de France – Pas de Calais Open, T13th in the Hopps de Provence Opens and T16th in the Lalla Aicha Challenge in Casablanca. I had five top 25 finishes and made 16 of the 22 cuts on the Challenge Tour (73%- a strong average). Although I didn’t have enough high finishes to make it into the top 15 for my European tour card it was a very solid year. In the end I finished 59th on the Challenge Tour order of merit which puts me into Category 10 for next year (players inside the top 70 on OM) I also played in two main tour events in Australia and Kenya under my category 22 status achieved at last years final stage Q school. I could have played in quite a few more of these later in the season but opted to concentrate on Challenge Tour events to try climb the order of merit. Despite missing out on a number of main tour opportunities later in the summer I did well enough to get into the end of season events in Foshan and Hainan, China. All of this was valuable experience for next year! My stroke average has continued to improve since I turned pro in September 2017 and this is an important stat for development and momentum. Throughout my amateur career I had always improved my scoring average a little year on year and at the start of each season the aim is to keep this trend going. My post-graduation/pre Walker Cup (amateur) Stroke average for 2017 was 71.76 (85 rounds) and in 2018 it was

71.08 (102 rounds) so this year’s average of 70.79 (81 rounds) has continued in the right direction. It will be great again to be able to fully plan my 2020 schedule and not need to rely on invitations and resultant last minute travel arrangements. The Challenge Tour itinerary has just been released and next year will be starting in South Africa in February with three new co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Tour and then a break until April when the main season will start in Europe. Now that I have played nearly all the courses this year it will be good to have a detailed knowledge of them when I go back next year. Luckily most tournaments will be at the same venues. As per last year, I am planning to work on my fitness over the next few months and will be travelling to see my coach in Wales quite a bit of technical work to do on my game. I am planning a trip out to Stanford in December then heading out to Dubai in mid-January to get ready for the South African swing in early February. I would like to thank all my sponsors and coaching team for their help during 2019 and wish everyone best wishes for the New Year! @davidboote123

I want you to imagine playing a chip shot from about three yards off the green. You’ve got about 30 feet of green to work with and most of it is downhill right to left. The pin is out. The hotel is a stone’s throw from the Eden Project and within easy driving distance of the coast, moor and several great Cornwall attractions. www.lanhydrockhotel.com YELVERTON Yelverton Golf Club is a delightful moorland course, designed by the renowned golf architect Herbert Fowler with many interesting features. These include old mine workings, a ‘Leat’ (artificial watercourse dug into the ground) which was built in the 1790’s to provide water to Plymouth from Dartmoor. Fowler also added many sizable banks and mounds with a limited number of fairway bunkers, this was typical of his trademark design. The generous fairways are lined with many hazards including, heather, gorse, bracken and small thorn bushes, the penalties for missing the fairways are substantial. The geographic location also adds to its natural features and relatively easy walking landscape. The course shares its fairways with the native Dartmoor Ponies, sheep and cattle, combined with the often-testing

weather creating a unique landscape for golf. The course has been host to many top quality competitions, including the EGU Men’s Senior Amateur Championships in 2006 www.yelvertongolf.co.uk THE DORSET GOLF RESORT The combination of 5-star log homes and cottages with private sauna’s, a Top 150 Championship Golf Course (27 holes) and a superb locally sourced menu is clearly a winning one, as the resort boast a 65% repeat booking rate. With lots to do locally including wine tasting and tours, clay shooting and other fantastic attractions within 10 minutes, its no wonder golfers are flocking to The Dorset Golf Resort for more than just a golf holiday. Don’t be fooled, for the serious golfer the quality is undeniable with the lakeland, parkland and woodland

courses designed by Martin Hawtree. Hawtree received international acclaim for his excellent work in redesigning The British Open courses and more recently the design of the 5-star Trump International Links in Aberdeen for Donald Trump. He is certainly rated as one of the best designers in the world today, so in design terms the courses at The Dorset Golf Resort have a pedigree that is undeniable. With four sets of tees the course can be set up to play at multiple levels of difficulty. Having hosted many championship events, Justin Rose even held the course record briefly shooting a Gross 69 from the back tees which he shot playing in a Tour event. There are certainly resorts you would always look forward to staying at and considered ‘one of the best’ in England; The Dorset Golf Resort is now rightly rated as one of them! www.dorsetgolfresort.com

GOLF BREAKS

Amendoeira Golf Resort

How often do you get to play golf in late November wearing a polo shirt and under the constant gaze of two Ryder Cup heroes?

T

he Algarve has long been the destination of choice for those eager to escape temporary greens and mud splattered waterproofs, which are often in evidence at the back end of the year. October is the busiest month for visiting golfers, but those numbers dwindle in November to allow for easier access to tee times and very few hold-ups out on the course.

The Faldo

42

It may not quite have reached shorts weather in late November, but it was still around 18-20 degrees with pleasant sunshine and a gentle breeze for perfect playing conditions. The southern stretch of Portugal boasts more than 40 courses to choose from with a wide variety of challenges. But it’s literally all on your doorstep at Amendoeira Golf Resort, which opened in 2008 and has become a real favourite among UK golfers. On arrival, two championship courses await you: The Faldo and The O’Connor, with statues overlooking their creations. Sir Nick leans nonchalantly on his putter, while Christy is captured in full glory thanking the heavens, after that unforgettable two-iron at The Belfry back in 1989. A statue of his uncle, Christy Snr, is also there as a tribute to an illustrious golfing family.

Their impact on European golf was legendary during their playing peak. But they have also left an indelible mark on the continent with their designs, which both feature regularly in the rankings. The Faldo is ranked as the second best in the Algarve (and number three in the whole of Portugal) by the respected Leading Courses. The O’Connor takes the number six spot in the Algarve and is 12th in Portugal. Of course, these rankings are often subjective and even within our group, there were differing opinions on the favourite. The Faldo is perhaps bettersuited to single-figure golfers with some longer carries from the tees and some cavernous bunkers waiting to guzzle anything off line. It’s definitely the more technical challenge with placement an essential factor, even on shots which appeared ideal from the

tee, as you find yourself wrong-sided for the approach. Any golfer would definitely see the benefit of playing the course more than once on any stay, simply by knowing the angles a little better and the places to avoid for the second attempt. But The O’Connor provides plenty of tests in its own right with wide fairways allowing for more forgiveness from the tee, but plenty of water to avoid all the way round and a particularly tough closing stretch of holes. Even for an occasional golfer who plays just a few rounds a year, it’s very playable and without nearly as many daunting tee shots staring at you. But even though they are both par72s and there is plenty of distance to cover, both enjoy several tee boxes to choose from to suit your ability. From the back tees, they could be brutal but for those on an enjoyable

golf trip with friends or family, there is simply no need to beat yourself up unnecessarily. For mid-handicappers, the yellow tees present enough of a challenge in their own right with some unfathomable breaks on greens to contend with, even when you’ve found the putting surface. Either way, both have plenty of memorable moments and complement each other to be different enough to make them stand apart, but also similar enough to know they are on the same piece of impressive landscape with the respective first tees and 18th greens a short hop from each other. As a resort, it’s a set-up which is very clearly aimed squarely at golfers – groups and couples – and there is a wealth of top-class accommodation to choose from. The three-bedroom apartments are ideal for groups, each

with en suite facilities and can easily get six with comfort. There is also some exceptional real estate up for grabs for those with deeper pockets. One superior villa, which can house up to 12 persons, was up for a cool €1.2m and affords views from the sun lounger next to the private pool across the 16th fairway of The O’Connor. It was the epitome of style and comfort. continued on page 44

The O’Connor

The staff were supremely attentive and would ferry your clubs down to the buggies from the storage areas as you grabbed your pre-match meal from the adjacent breakfast room. There are apartments and villas are in abundance – some with their own private pools – and there is wealth of facilities to enjoy with a regular shuttle bus to ferry you around as and when you please. Aside from the swimming pools and kids clubs, there are excellent sports facilities which include tennis courts, football pitches (which attract professional teams for training camps), gym, jogging paths and various other activities to appeal to even the most active of holidaymakers. For beach-lovers, you’re also a few minutes’ drive away from the Algarve’s wonderful coastline and just 30 minutes from Faro airport for easy transfers. There are also plenty of other attractions to enjoy in the nearby area. Aqualand and Zoomarine are also on the doorstep for water theme parks, while for the petrol heads, a visit to Autodromo – the Algarve’s

44

motorsports park – is a must as it offers fantastic track experiences, or a session of go-karting on a fantastic circuit for that extra element of competitive fun and it’s only 20 minutes away. The region is also rightly proud of its food and restaurants, so if you prefer to leave the sanctuary of the Amendoeira clubhouse, at nearby hotel Vila Vita Parc you can enjoy a mouthwatering selection of Michelinstarred restaurants or something a little less expansive, but equally enjoyable. As for the nightlife, if you are looking for anything other than a nice meal and a few drinks, you will need to venture towards the towns of Albufeira or Vilamoura – both around 20 minutes in a taxi. But there is an alternative for some fun when the sun goes down – and it’s a fantastic addition to a golf trip, which is exclusively about the golf. The Academy course is a nine-hole selection of par-threes, ranging from around 60-yards to around 120 yards. It’s an excellently-maintained course

and is ideal for beginners to have a crack or to sharpen up on your wedge play. But it’s a different proposition when the lights are on – with full floodlights glaring down. Although an excellent dinner and a bottle of wine as the warm-up may not necessarily improve your scores, it’s great for entertainment purposes and there is some definite novelty value too as the only floodlit course in Portugal. Unlimited golf packages start at £299 per person for a three-night stay so it will not break the bank either, if you are keen to play as much golf as possible when the opportunity presents itself. With future plans to add a state-ofthe-art spa and some modifications to make even better use of the space inside the vast clubhouse, the future looks very bright for Amendoeira.
