UPGRADE PLANS FOR WENTWORTH

Wentworth Club has announced its commitment to invest heavily to significantly enhance and improve its three championship courses, facilities and service quality.

U

nder the leadership of chief executive Stephen Gibson, the Club will embark on an extensive upgrade of the facilities in 2016. Stephen Gibson said, “Wentworth club has a long history of golfing excellence. Since the club opened in 1924 it has been a pioneering market leader in golf. History has been, and continues to be, made here. Over the past nine decades the club has become synonymous with the world’s most prestigious championships, played by the world’s best golfers. “The original vision for Wentworth, by the pioneer George Tarrant, was to set new standards for both a golf course and a residential family community. Today, over 90 years later, our announced commitment to invest in this British institution of sport enables us to build on our prestigious heritage and lay the foundations of the future success of the club. All of the improvements will ensure a club of exceptional quality and will set unparalleled standards on and off the course. We are committed to investing significant sums to fulfil our vision and improve the facilities throughout the club.”

6

The focus on investment comes after a period of consultation and extensive review undertaken by Wentworth Club’s Executive Team and owners Reignwood Group. Reignwood Group’s significant investment in London – through the Ten Trinity Square project and, most recently, its support of the London Symphony Orchestra – was recently commended by Her Majesty the Queen, and marks the ever-strengthening business and cultural partnerships between China and the UK. Earlier this year, Reignwood Group was awarded the Chinese Investment in UK award by The 48 Group Club, which honours responsible investors in the UK.

COURSES A vital part of the investment programme will see a major renovation of the West Course, carried out in association with Ernie Els Design. The improvements have been endorsed by chief executive of the European Tour, Keith Pelley, and will reinforce the West Course’s position as one of the world’s top golf courses. Wentworth Club also plans to

update both the Edinburgh and East Courses, again working with worldrenowned golf course designers. The East Course will be restored to its original Harry Colt design. For the Edinburgh Course, Wentworth’s vision is to create a world-class golf course and state-of-the-art practice facility. Together, these golf course improvements at Wentworth Club support Reignwood Group’s ambition to increase the competitiveness and quality of UK golf and country clubs on the global stage. Further, as part of the commitment to providing an outstanding experience and service across all areas of the club, the investment programme will include a total refurbishment of both the main cubhouse and the tennis & health club facilities.

MEMBERSHIP The plans for wide-ranging improvements to the Club go together with a new membership structure to take effect from 1st April 2017. The current membership structure will be replaced with a family-based membership.

WHITE CROWNED DISABLED GOLF ASSOCIATION CHAMPION AT BURHILL Surrey-based Burhill Golf Club was host to The Disabled Golf Association’s recent end of season final, with nine handicapper Brian White taking home the annual spoils.

W

ith handicaps ranging from 7 to 36, 18 golfers from around the country descended upon Burhill’s New Course to battle it out for the right to be called 2015 DGA Race to Burhill Champion. Having qualified from Ramsdale Park in August, Brian put together what would turn out to be an unmatched score of 39 stableford points and prove good enough to take home 1st place. Another standout performance on the day was that of ex-professional caddie and seven handicapper Ashley Harris who compiled 37 points, having qualified from Wycombe Heights in September. Following the round, the finalists were treated to a fantastic dinner in Burhill’s Barnes Wallace Room after which the prizes were presented to the winners. Founded in 2010, The DGA aims to facilitate access to golf for disabled and impaired people across England, with the organisation having achieved status as a charitable Community Interest Company with the sole purpose of

getting more people onto a golf course for therapy and general well-being. DGA Director and Events Coordinator Graeme Robertson commented, “We’re delighted to be able to host our season final here at Burhill, as well as all of our qualifying events at BGL venues around the country. It’s a real treat for all of the

competitors to play at such a prestigious venue and we’re thrilled at BGL’s commitment to support the association again next year.” All of those who qualified for the final at Burhill represented the very essence of what the DGA stands for, with the field comprised of competitors with varying disabilities, ranging from autism to multiple sclerosis. Speaking on the success of the Race to Burhill final, General Manager Matthew Hazelden commented, “The DGA’s mission to promote the game of golf as a pathway to a healthier lifestyle and greater social inclusion for those who are disabled is something we’re delighted to be a part of. “The fact that individuals are able to enjoy the game of golf at a competitive level, irrespective of age, gender or disability, is extremely inspiring and we look forward to hosting the end of season final again next year”

PUTTENHAM’S FIRST EVER PRO AM It was 121 years in the making but according to the 88 golfers who took part in Puttenham’s firstever Pro Am it was well worth the wait.

W

ith the Course in pristine condition, the weather set fair and the sun breaking through it was all systems go for a great day’s golf. A brand new MG3 glinted temptingly in the sunlight alongside the 18th green but sadly, despite a few close calls, a Hole in One proved too elusive on the day! Local PGA professionals James Ablett (Lee on the Solent) and Chris Gane (Silvermere) were joint winners shooting two under par sharing a handsome first prize of £1300. The PGA commmented that Puttenham had proved a fine test of golf for all the professionals. Jack Clegg (Worplesdon) led PGC members

Paul Bugdale, Jim Giberson and Colin Thody to victory in the team event. Ultimately, the Pro Am was Captain Doug Fleming’s idea to raise funds for his chosen charity – the Guildford based Prostate Project. To highlight the tremendous work and research the Prostate Trust and other cancer charities carry a number of Club members who had all survived prostate cancer attended the pre-dinner activities. Their leader Terry Bridgman

gave a poignant reminder to all those men present of the importance of regular personal checks. Doug said “Thanks to the generosity of our main sponsor Normandy Garage, the hole sponsors, those that donated auction items and raffle prizes, individual donors and our volunteers and supporters the event raised over £8000. It was a hugely successful first for Puttenham that has definitely set a trend for future Pro Am events!”

SURREY GOLFERS OFF TO MOROCCO AFTER REGIONAL FINAL SUCCESS A pair of amateur golfers from Surrey has won an expenses-paid trip to Morocco after qualifying from the UK regional final of the 2015 Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo.

M

ortgage broker John Hennessy, 53, a three-handicapper from Walton-on-Thames and property developer Peter Smart, 49, an eight-handicapper from Cobham, scored an impressive 45 points to win the Morocco Matchplay southern regional mixed pairs final, at the Manor House GC, Castle Combe, in Wiltshire. Now, the Pyrford GC members can prepare to travel to February’s grand final at the stunning Golf de Mogador, in Essaouira, a beautiful 16th-century, fortified harbour town on Morocco’s Atlantic coast.

10

A delighted Hennessy explained: “We holed everything - 45 points was a great score. When you fill in the form at the start of the season, you never actually expect to get there. We played some very good golfers on the way and we came close to losing matches. Smart added: “What a course! The key for us was the putts. It wasn’t as if we were rolling them up and giving ourselves a little tap-in. There were about seven four-to-five footers to hole and we made most of them. And John chipped in on the par-five 15th. In total, 32 competitors will enjoy

complimentary return flights to Morocco, five nights accommodation at the five-star Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa hotel and four rounds of golf at nearby Golf de Mogador. Participants will also receive a welcome reception and cocktail evening, and a final night presentation gala dinner. The Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo, takes place from February 7-12, 2016.

REVIEW

A YEAR ROUND GOLFING GEM

Purley Downs Golf Club is a 6308-yard, par 70, SSS 71, downland layout, designed by JH Taylor in 1904. It is superbly situated some 500 feet above sea level with magnificent views over the whole of London.

S

traight from the off Purley Downs golf course offers a solid test of golf. The good looking signature first hole (a downhill par 3, 161yds SI 13, whites) demands a tee shot that finds the putting surface or you will have a tricky up and down to save par. The hole has been described in Golf World magazine’s travel section (March 2009) as “perhaps the best opening par-3 in golf” and although I have not played the other opening par three holes, Purley Downs 1st is certainly a stunner. The 3rd (441yds SI 3) and 6th (468yds SI 1) are long in length, both playing uphill with slight dogleg left’s. The fairway needs to be found or it will be demanding (even for the strongest of player) to reach the green in regulation in winter conditions. The 8th (199yds SI 11) is a long par three. It is one of my favourite holes with out of bounds on the right. The tee shot is a difficult one as the green

12

sits in a bowl with banks of rough on each side. A stern test to make par. Another of the strong holes in the 11th (429yds SI4) which is well protected by fairway bunkers and trees to the right hand side impede the view to the green for your approach shots. The 12th (475yds SI 12) is a par five with a fairway running from left to right with out of bounds on the far right, is a good looking hole with large green that’s tricky. The 16th (280yds SI 16) a drivable par four for the longer hitters, has a deceptively tricky green which will catch out even the best of putters. I’m told you should never give a putt on the 16th green. With the clubhouse in sight, the 18th (426yds SI 10) is a superb finishing hole as you drive down into a valley onto the up sloping fairway. The elevated green is a tough target to find as you are most likely playing from a steep uphill lie.

Overall Purley Downs is a great course with its rolling fairways, well placed bunkers and punishing rough. The fine links-type turf with chalk subsoil allows play 52 weeks of the year. They have fantastic condition greens befitting to any professional tour event and by far the best I have come across anywhere in winter. So good in fact I’m now a member! WALTON HEATH 3.5 v WENTWORTH 1.5 Martin Hayes, captain of Walton Heath’s 1st team brings us all the action from the final of the Surrey Scratch K.O at Hankley Common

O

ver the season the team had many encounters with the prospect of defeat but had prevailed on six matches, all of which had gone on to extra holes, including the semi final against Windlesham where Mark Justice hit a superb shot on the 19th to get the team to the final. Team spirit was at an all time high as we headed into the final. I dropped myself from the squad as I couldn’t face dropping anyone else. As expected the final was action packed. Wentworth’s Daniel List (+3) holed his second shot on the 18th for eagle to win a gripping game against former England mid amateur champion

Neill Williams, the first time Daniel had been in front. Tom Cordiner won four and three against Ed Holland and Stuart Robinson outplayed Sean Mullen, setting up Walton’s winning position. Mark Justice played Harry McCreanor and confidently holed from five feet

to birdie the last at Hankley Common and winning the Final with one match still undecided – Luke Hogan, playing no.5, who was 2up with two to play. We could all enjoy Luke’s remaining two holes with no pressure! Thanks to Surrey Golf Union for organising a great venue.

JOE WOOD BECOMES SURREY COUNTY U13 & U14 CHAMPION OF 2015 (Olga Mills Cup and the Usmar Salver) With a record 56 entries for this event, it was going to be a busy day at Shirley Park Golf Club, and a busy day it proved to be.

D

espite the heavy rainfall the previous day and the rain that came down during a large portion of the day itself, the course held up beautifully and great credit must go to the greens staff at the club for presenting the course in such good condition. With two Championships, the format is 18 holes scratch medal, and although an U14 can obviously only win the U14 title an U13 player is eligible for both. Despite the unpleasant weather conditions two players, Joe Wood and Peter Cole, came in with the fantastic score of 73, 2 over par. Even more impressive was the fact that both these players were in the younger U13 category and with no U14 player able to match their score the two boys would play off for both titles! For the playoff the 1st and 18th were to be used as sudden death holes and with a large number of players

and parents watching the two boys tee’d off. In the end only the 1st playoff hole was required with Joe Wood becoming only the third player in the Championships history to win both Championships, a feat not completed since 2003.

The final results were: U13 Champion: Joe Wood (West Hill), Runner up Peter Cole (Burhill), 3rd place Fergus Jacobs (Roehampton). U14 Champion: Joe Wood (West Hill), Runner up Peter Cole (Burhill), 3rd place Lewis Brown (Surbiton).

U18’s SURREY JUNIORS WIN FRIENDSHIP TROPHY FOR 3rd YEAR IN A ROW This is the fourth year Surrey have taken a team to play in this event against other teams from across Europe – and the third time they have won it! This year was hosted by the French region of Midi-Pyrenees and Surrey played at Toulouse Sielh in the south of France – the other regions were Catalunya from Spain and Nordrhein Westfallen from Germany.

SURREY V SUSSEX V KENT U14 SUSSEX SALVER AT PYRFORD GOLF CLUB

F

or 2015 it was the turn of Surrey to host the annual match between the Counties and the very delightful Pyrford Golf Club with its 23 acres of lakes and sculptured mounds was to be the venue. And all the lads were determined to make sure the Salver stayed in Surrey for a record fifth year. The format for this match was 12-a-side, triple singles match play off scratch, with the players going out in handicap order so they play against other players of a similar ability. With 2pts for a win and 1pt for a half the winner of the Salver is determined by the total points collected by each County. First out for Surrey was Enrique Dimayuga who found himself up against some stiff opposition, coming in with a half and a loss, but gaining a point for the team. Next, Ben Partridge who gave a Captains performance winning both his matches, as did No.3 Lewis Brown who won both his matches very convincingly. Surrey’s next two players, Luke Stock and Fergus Jacobs both had a tough day with neither player gaining a point despite giving it their all, as did Daniel Stafford at the tail end.

CONGRATULATIONS... Farleigh Golf Club the 2015 U14 Rookie League Champions! Angus Flanagan (St George’s Hill ) and Harvey Byers (Walton Heath) who helped England U16 complete a clean sweep of their home international series. Junior Order of Merit Winners of 2015: Joint Scratch Winners – Lawrence Courtney (West Hill) and Harry Plowman-Ollington (Farleigh) Handicap winner: Hyun Mo Yang (Malden) Aine and Declan Hunt who won the Adult Junior Greensomes with 42 points. Jess Adams and Sarah Lipyeat won the scratch prize with 29 points.

16

Surrey’s number four and five both gained maximum points with fines wins. Abdus-samad Banday got the two biggest wins of the day totally dominating his opponents 7&5 and 6&5, while Ryan Griffiths won his 5&4 and 2&1, four valuable points for the team. Next was Babar Haq who collected two points courtesy of a win and a loss and Ollie Kail with three points thanks to a win and a half. Number 10 saw Peter Cole in total control of his matches, winning both comfortably, as did Egor

Zotov who was right behind him. Each County takes a playing reserve who plays a non-scoring match, Surrey’s Austin Gambel was Surrey’s reserve and he did a great job winning both his matches. It was expected to be a close match and it was, with the finals scores – Surrey 30pts, Sussex 29pts and Hampshire 13pts. Surrey held on to the Salver in what was one of the closest matches ever in this competition. Well done lads!

NEW JUNIOR COACHING STRUCTURE FOR SURREY Surrey Golf is refining the structure of the U18 coaching program for 2016

U

nlike previous years, where there has been individual squads at U17, U16 Development and U16 Target Levels, in 2016, there will be one overall training squad of 20 players encompassing this group from U17 down to U15 working with four lead coaches. Regards the breakdown of the group in terms of age, the numbers will be fluid as it will depend on the quality of players and the varying standard each year when the coaches and team managers meet to select the group. There will continue to be a separate U18 Tournament squad of around 10-12

players, who will make up the basis of the U18 Inter County League team and South East Region qualifier teams. Players in national or regional programmes will be given exemption from the county programme but still be considered for match selections when available. The U12, U13 & U14 program and County Academy Program (CAP) will remain unchanged in 2016 as it is not felt there is any need to change the structure within these groups. It is important to stress that players from outside the training squads will still be under close observation and could be called up at any time for training or match selections.

125 YEARS OF HISTORY – RESCUED FROM A SKIP

I

n September 1890, a group of outstanding and innovative Sutton Ladies managed something completely unique in the history of golf – they founded a golf club without men. The Club, now known as ‘Banstead Downs Golf Club’, has just celebrated its 125th Anniversary and marked it with the publication of a new book “The First 125 Years”. But all the archives were nearly lost, thrown on the skip during the Club’s recent renovation work. “If it hadn’t been for Maggie Lester, our club’s sharp-eyed Commis Chef, who clambered into the skip and rescued them, 125 years of history would have headed to the local tip” commented the current Ladies Captain, Carol Pearson. Filled with biographies of the lady founders and beautiful images “the

book has turned out to be a 125 year ‘History of Britain’ told through the archives of a golf club” commented author Ian Pearce.

Copies are available from the club for a minimum donation of £12.50

We are happy to offer our WINTER WARMER SOCIETY PACKAGE of £24.00, inclusive of: Banstead Downs Golf Club, due to it being a fast draining downland course, ensures that it suffers far less in a wet Winter, than many other local courses; even after the worst that our British weather can bring!

• 18 holes of golf • 1-course lunch (Minimum of 12 Golfers. Valid from January – March only – not weekends)

IMPROVE YOUR PUTTING AT HOME THIS WINTER By Steve Blacklee

PUTTING IS VERY MUCH A GAME WITHIN A GAME AND CAN MAKE OR BREAK A GOOD SCORE. WORK ON YOUR PUTTING IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME THIS WINTER AND COME OUT SCORING STRAIGHT AWAY NEXT SEASON.

T

here are two main variables in getting the ball into the hole; line and speed. Our technique is mainly responsible for getting the ball started on a good line consistently and our feel and tempo is responsible for the speed. Matched together these form the basis for consistently good putting.

22

To look at technique and therefore the line of the putt first, we need a stroke with minimal movement to enable the clubface to be square to our target line for as long as possible at impact. To help this, the fewer moving parts the better. Essentially, we are creating some fixed points in the stroke.

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

GOLF ACADEMY

1 ADDRESS POSITION The eyes should be aligned over the top of the ball with the upper body more rounded than with the full swing. Allow the arms to fold naturally up the outside of your upper body. The arms, hands and putter should feel underneath your chest (pic 1). Drill: Hands on knees Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and bend over and place your palms on top of your knees, thumbs pointing down. Allow your upper body to press its weight down through your arms and hands into the top of your knees. This will draw your upper body and eye line over the ball and into a great putting posture. Many putters are too long and if this posture requires you to grip down the club then that is fine. From here simply let go of your knees and hold a putter and you’ll feel over the top of the ball with the putter and arms more underneath you (pic 2). LOWER BODY

Debby Wong / Shutterstock.com

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

As mentioned earlier, we want to minimise unnecessary movement. A common fault in putting is too

2 much lower body movement causing inconsistency. Drill: Steady club To help keep the lower body quiet simply rest a club against your left leg and make a stroke. If you have too much lower body movement the club will move around or even fall to the floor. Aim to keep the resting club as steady as possible (pic 3).

THE STROKE

TEMPO

With your lower body quiet and your head remaining steady over the top of the ball, we are now left with just your upper body, arms and hands that will be moving with the putter. This will be one coordinated move driven from the upper body with everything working together as one unit. With the core and upper body controlling the stroke, the arms and hands will be passive allowing the putter to swing smoothly.

Whatever the length of putt, the tempo should remain the same for the back and through swing. To vary the length of the putt, simply alter the length of the backswing and corresponding through swing. Always try to maintain a one-two tempo. Distance control problems are normally related to either largely increased or decreased to the putter head speed through impact (pic 7).

Drill: Body and arms together. Start by getting into good posture with the hands on knees drill above. From there, let go of your knees and rotate your palms outwards touching the sides of the hands together. This will rotate your upper arms and elbows in to your side. Now make a simulated stroke by rocking the shoulders down and up. The arms will stay nicely in to your side and be controlled by the rocking of the upper body (pics 4,5 & 6).

24

6 to enable maximum feel. Vary the distance and see how many you can get within 12 inches in a row without hitting the board. 7

Drill: Distance control To practice distance control at home, putt towards a skirting board from 10-12 feet trying to get the ball is close to the board as possible without hitting it. You will soon find that the tempo of the stroke smoothes Steve Blacklee operates his own golf academy at The Golf Studio in Lower Kingswood, Surrey. COACHING

Sutton Green Golf Club welcomes

GARY SMITH KNOWN BY MANY TO BE THE NO.1 SHORT GAME COACH IN THE COUNTRY, GARY SMITH IS BRINGING HIS EXPERTISE TO SURREY AND IS NOW COACHING AT SUTTON GREEN GOLF CLUB.

G

ary, an Advanced Fellow of the PGA, has presented well over 100 short game seminars to over a 1000 PGA Professionals in the UK and Europe. He has 14 years experience as an England golf technical coach to the elite men’s amateur squad and 10 years working as an England Girl’s Technical Coach. He has coached tour pros to wins in the Scottish, Portuguese and Italian Opens, represented Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA Cup, is a former winner of the Kenya Open Championship and has competed in The Open Championship three times! With all those achievements notched up it’s not hard to see why he is rated in the top 25 coaches in the UK!

Gary and Andrew Sullivan during England Golf training

LINEAR APPROACH Gary’s ‘Linear approach’ to short game technique is said by many to be groundbreaking – Justin met up with him at Sutton Green for a quick lesson. I first saw Gary at the London Golf show a few years ago. At the time I was struggling with my own short game. I had the chipping ‘yips’

26

and was hitting divots further than the ball! I had worked on different techniques to improve but none seemed to help. However, what Gary was saying at the show was clicking, so I purchased his short game App for my smartphone and began to practise what was being preached.

I was ecstatic with the improvements and stuck with the Linear approach. Meeting up with Gary at Sutton Green Golf Club, was a great chance to see how I was doing. Very quickly we set to work looking at my technique and within a couple of shots and a small adjustment from Gary, I was now confidently striking the ball out of the middle of the club every time. With this minor adjustment I now feel I can get my short game finely tuned from being already dramatically improved from using his App and DVD available from Gary’s website. If you are struggling with your short game as I was, Gary Smith will give you a fresh approach and a marked improvement with his Linear technique. Pop down to Sutton Green and find out for yourself. 98% of Gary’s students improved with the Linear Approach – survey of over 90 students.

ENGLAND’S ANCIENT ATLANTIC LINKS A stunning collection of six legendary championship links golf courses in South West England, known collectively as England’s Atlantic Links, has established itself as one of the premier championship links destinations in the country.

T

he tantalising trail of ancient links set against the wild, dramatic backdrop of the north Atlantic coastline comprises Burnham & Berrow in Somerset, Royal North Devon and Saunton (East & West courses) in Devon and Trevose and St Enodoc in Cornwall. Whilst many links lovers traditionally look towards Scotland or Ireland, the grouping together of these south west links has sparked interest from discerning golfers, who have discovered this relatively-unknown

cluster of glorious links which combine history, tradition and variety and can be played for a relatively modest green fee. All six courses enjoy a distinct personality. Burnham & Berrow, founded in 1890, is particularly noted for its distinct sand hills which form such stubborn, natural obstacles, along with the buckthorn and even a marsh. The course has evolved over the decades but today’s layout is largely the work of Harry Colt. The club’s first professional and five-time

Open Champion JH Taylor, described the course as “one of the most sporting courses conceivable”. Down the coast is Saunton, set in the remote shadows of the giant sand dunes of Braunton Burrows. Established in 1893 its two championship courses, East and West, are among the greatest links in the world. It was here in 1997 that a 17-year-old Sergio Garcia won the British Boys Championship, just two years before making his Ryder Cup debut. Royal North Devon, dating back continued on page 32

REGIONAL ATTRACTIONS The Atlantic Links courses are complemented by the abundant off-course attractions that the south west has to offer; quaint coastal towns like Clovelly and Ilfracombe, and charming fishing villages like Port Isaac, Rock and Padstow can be found along the Atlantic coast. Near Burnham & Berrow, historic towns like Weston-super-Mare and the spa town of Bath are ideal destinations to round off a golfing adventure. The region also has a rich cultural offering thanks to attractions like the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Tate St Ives, displaying the very best in modern and local art, the renown Eden Project and fascinating Lost Gardens of Heligan whilst outdoor activities such as surfing around Newquay and walking and horse riding in Exmoor National Park are as good as anywhere in the British Isles. The gastronomic delights of the South West are not to be missed either, from the exceptional Padstow seafood restaurants of famous local chef Rick Stein and a variety of other Michelin-starred restaurants, to real English ale and authentic local fare in traditional old country pubs.

to 1864, is England’s oldest links. The golf course, set on common land, on which livestock still graze, has hardly changed over 150 years and to play it is like taking a step back in time and seeing how golf was played in Victorian England. Thanks to the club’s ancient heritage, the clubhouse houses as a treasure trove of golf memorabilia second only to the R&A. Cornwall’s St Enodoc, designed by James Braid and founded in 1890,

boasts a fabulous setting among the dunes overlooking the River Camel estuary and the Atlantic. The Church course (so called because of the Norman Church that was uncovered in the middle of the course) is renowned for its towering Himalaya bunker – reputedly the tallest in Europe , it entirely blocks golfers’ view of the 6th green from all but a slither of fairway. continued on page 34

Nearby Trevose offers another stunning links set against the majestic Trevose Head. Complete with holiday accommodation, Trevose conjures up a relaxed atmosphere to go with its classic Harry Colt golf course. With only a gentle breeze the 6,973-yard Championship Course offers good scoring opportunities, particularly with

34

3 par 5’s, though strong off-sea winds can transform it into a tricky test. Testament to the quality of six courses, they are all regularly chosen to host top amateur championships. Last year Saunton’s East and West Courses staged the English Amateur Championship, the Blue Riband men’s event on the England golf

calendar whilst St Enodoc was in the amateur golfing spotlight when it hosted the English Women Amateur Championship. The links also appear regularly in strong positions of international golf course rankings, thereby enhancing the growing reputation of the offering. Earlier this year Golf World magazine’s latest course ranking for the ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in England’ featured all six courses: Saunton’s East Course was placed in ninth slot, closely followed St Enodoc in 15th position whilst Burnham & Berrow came in at number 40, Royal North Devon at 79, Trevose at 86 and Saunton West at 90. Plaudits from the world of golf are constantly received, such as one by the legendary Sir Nick Faldo who said about Saunton, “I’ve no doubt if the East Course were located on the coast of Lancashire or Kent it would have hosted an Open Championship by now.” For more on England’s Atlantic Links, visit www.atlantic-links.co.uk or for golf packages call 01637 879991

I

t is here that we put the ‘wild’ into the Wild Atlantic Way, a route of 1,500 miles that winds down the west coast from Ireland’s most northerly point in Co. Donegal to the most southerly in Co. Cork. With hundreds of miles of raw Atlantic coastline, the West promises an exhilarating adventure. Three of our golf courses are comfortably ranked inside Ireland’s top 20... and each sits on the ocean’s edge. Carne, County Sligo and Enniscrone golf clubs have rich histories and a variety of challenges to thrill any links aficionado. There are other links, too, and golf is not limited to the dunes or just the coast as there is golf here to suit every taste, every ambition, every ability. Despite such pedigree the region remains off the beaten golf tourist’s path, and that means superb value is always on offer. It means quieter fairways, too. With flight times less than 90 minutes, access to the region is excellent, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted fly direct to Ireland West Airport Knock, in the heart of the region.

Here are five courses to make any trip to the West worthwhile. Carne: Dunes rise almost 500 feet above sea level promising the biggest and most adventurous links experience in the world. 27 holes. Connemara: The perfect 360° setting for a links, surrounded by mountains and ocean. 27 holes stretch over dunes and some of Connemara’s fabled rocky terrain. County Sligo: This Harry Colt classic hosts the annual West of Ireland Championship. It combines an intriguing variety of links holes for one enthralling adventure. 27 holes. Enniscrone: A links to test all of your abilities. Beautifully shaped and routed, the big dunes promise several blind shots as well as stunning scenery along Killala Bay. 27 holes. oodhall Spa boasts two outstanding courses ranked among the top 100 in the world. The beautiful parkland-style Bracken course offers stunning design and a highly enjoyable round of golf. However, it is the challenging Hotchkin course which tantalises the most competitive of golfers with its heathland characteristics, earning it a place in the top five courses in the country and the best golf in the East of England. Playing a special course requires somewhere special to stay and nowhere could beat The Petwood. Requisitioned by the RAF as wartime Officers’ Mess for 97, 619 and 617 Squadrons, it is perhaps best known for being home to the latter

Adorned with pictures and fascinating memorabilia, the Squadron Bar seats up to 16 and is especially popular with golfing parties for private dining. Enjoying excellent food, a super selection of wines and good local ales with friends is a perfect way to end a day’s golf and prepare for the next. This independent hotel oozes history and charm and, with attentive

service from friendly staff, guests feel as if they are being welcomed into a familiar family home. With 53 bedrooms and extensive banqueting facilities for up to 160, the Petwood is also a popular choice for golf society events. Regularly hosting weddings, special celebrations and large events, it is renowned for excellent menus and hospitality and can cater for groups of all sizes. Located half an hour from the historic city of Lincoln and only 10 minutes from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby, there are many options for an extended stay and the helpful Reservations team will gladly offer itinerary ideas. Hotel Peralada Wine Golf & Spa

MEDITERRANEAN DELIGHTS WE TRAVELLED TO COSTA BRAVA IN LATE SEPTEMBER, AND SAMPLED SOME OF THE BEST GOLF THIS PART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN HAS TO OFFER...

F

irst stop, located in the heart of EmpordĂ , 10 minutes from the sea and the French border was Hotel Peralada Wine Golf & Spa. The Golf course, 18-hole par 71 course at 6,071m is a good test of golf. Made even more demanding as we were besieged with 40 plus mile an hour winds! The starting hole is a fairly straight forward one, a short par 4 at 287 metres, which lulls you in to a false sense of security but by the 3rd you realise things may get interesting as a sharp dogleg left tempts you to drive over the bend onto a fairway that runs left to right (a hole I should have shown more respect!). The 6th is a downhill par 3, 200m long, with great views across the Pyenees. A tough enough hole, made even more tricky with the wind. Playing downhill the 13th Par 5 at 402m is a solid hole, with longer hitters able to reach the large green, tucked away to the left and well

48

protected with trees that may obscure the pin. I really enjoyed the 17th Par 5, 478m which brings course management firmly into play. Surgical precision is required if taking on the green in two. Overall an enjoyable course. Even more so if playing in calmer conditions. Off the course you have everything you need to keep you entertained for a few days. The hotel has its own unique wine spa, where all treatments are based on the natural properties of wine and grapes. Local attractions not to be missed include the Peralada wine cellars, the castle, the casino and the museums. Torre Mirona Golf Club (6201m from the whites) brings resort style golf to the table with a mixture of average holes to absolute stunners. The signature 5th hole (par 3) is 189m from the white tees, finishing on an island green almost surrounded by water. It is one of the best par 3’s I have played.

The 6th hole (par 5) again brings water into play with your second or third approach shots. The delightful 10th hole (par 3) is short at 138m, again with water on the left and a green that needs to be hit. The front and back nine are very different with the front being more technical. Many of the holes on the back nine are very well protected by vast bunkering that needs to be negotiated. Hole 14 (par 4) 384m from the whites, is a fine example of greenside bunkering, with only the smallest of gaps for those chasing the approach shot in. Arguably the best hole on the course is the 18th (par 5) at 489m, with out of bounds all down the left hand side. The fairway needs to be found to be able to have a go at the green, well protected by water on the right that starts about a 100 yards before the putting surface. A strong finishing

hole, that will have your nerves on edge when playing to the green. Gualta 18 hole (par 3) course is a golfers’ delight, with bunkers, lakes and decent greens, it provides a challenge for golfers of all levels and abilities. All of the holes will test your short game and bring a different range of shots into play, a great use of trees and water make for a good challenge. Well worth a visit and a very friendly relaxed environment to spend a few hours. The star of the show was always going to be the PGA Catalunya Resort Stadium Course (6104m from the Yellow tees) ranked Spain’s no.1 since 2012 and 3rd in Europe. It is the official candidate venue for Costa Brava and is Barcelona’s 2022 Ryder Cup bid. This course is spectacular right from the off. The facilities of the 36 hole venue are truly amazing. The practise area is worth a mention, particularly the short game

area which includes a 2,000 squaremetre putting green and chipping area and five bunkers each containing different sand types (Augusta, St Andrews, Hawaii volcanic, PGA Catalunya Stadium Course sand bunker and Pebble Beach). Standing on the first tee 381m (par 4) you know you are in for a real treat. You look down onto the sharp dog leg from a massively elevated tee box with water protecting the green on the left. A decent drive is required to give a good line onto the green. The 3rd hole (457m) the first of the par 5’s is stunning with large banks on either side of the fairway, which will guide a misdirected drive back to the short grass, leaving you with a long approach to a very well protected green with a lake on the left, this is a visually great looking hole that will leave you nervy standing over your approach shots.

Torre Mirona Golf Club

The 5th a downhill par three (174m) with water again on the left protects this semi island green that needs to be hit or you will have a very tricky up and down. The vast amount of water on the course is a common theme throughout. The 11th 150m (par 3) drops 13m, so it plays at least one club shorter. The green is a small target and you have to carry a large bunker at the front and be short of the water at the back of the green. The 13th 350m (par 4) again has a raised tee overlooking the inviting fairway below but the real test is the nervy second shot to a green protected again by water in front and behind the green. 18 is a good finishing hole at 382m demanding a good tee shot to find the fairway and allowing you to attack the raised green overseen by the clubhouse and the welcoming sounds of the bar!

ON COURSE TO PROMOTE SUN SAFETY FOR GOLFERS If you’re planning a golfing break in the sun this winter, don’t forget your sun protection! Just as important as your clubs or shoes, a long-lasting, easy to apply sunscreen is an essential addition to your golf bag...

G

olfers are actually exposed to 27 times the recommended levels of UV without protection and that’s in the UK alone. Golfing breaks in sunny destinations like Dubai and Turkey are very popular at this time of year so the PGA has partnered with Techniblock to help raise awareness of sun safety on the golf course. Techniblock sun protection spray is a non-greasy aerosol sunscreen that doesn’t need rubbing in so it won’t leave a sticky residue all over your

clubs. One application is all that’s needed to keep you protected from harmful UV rays during a round of golf and the handy, sealed can fits easily in to a golf bag and won’t leak. Fragrance-free, breathable, resistant to perspiration and virtually invisible on the skin, you won’t even feel like you’re wearing sunscreen at all. Techniblock is the number one choice for golfers in South Africa, where it was developed, and will be available in a number of PGA Pro Golf Shops in the UK from early next year.

Until then, you can order it online at www.techniblock.co.uk Give it a try and enjoy free delivery throughout October and November. Simply enter the code FREEDEL at the checkout. We offer secure payment, fast shipping and a friendly customer service. For more information, contact sales@techniblock.co.uk or call 07769 943200

HIT LONGER

The heavens have finally answered your putting nightmares...

The SliceStoppa is a simple and easy way to improve your golf swing enabling you to hit the ball further and straighter. Specifically designed to be used on most surfaces including the driving range. Probably the most common fault with golfers is the slice – it’s said that nearly 85% of golfers slice the ball!

The all new HH1 putter from Heavenly Hybrid is creating huge interest, and for good reasons: Introduce the SliceStoppa into your practice session, the base rods directed to the intended target sets you square, the shaft alignment rod is in the periphery of your vision and the natural reaction is to swing the club under the rod encouraging a more rounded golf swing achieving longer straighter shots.
