everyone’s talking about...

HAYDEN REVEALS DAUGHTER KAYA NOT IN DANGER ‘Nashville’ star Hayden Panettiere has shared the news that her 7-year-old daughter Kaya is “safe and not in the Ukraine” with her father as Russia rages war against its neighbour - causing worldwide panic and financial instability. Hayden’s ex-fiance; heavyweight Ukraine boxer, Wladamir Klitschko, has vowed to stay in his homeland and fight the Russians with his older brother – Vitali Klitschko – a senior Ukraine politician, who is also the mayor of Kyiv.... “till the bitter end”. “They will do whatever it takes to fend off the Russians,” sources close to the siblings claim. After the brothers’ strong stance, it was apparent that Kaya was not with her mother in the US during the first few days of the war, when the country was attacked with ferocious force from every border on on February 24th. News websites, however, were suggesting that Kaya was still in the Ukraine with Wladamir, 42, and was in severe danger. As the rumours escalated, Hayden, 32, was

forced to issue a statement to fans and the world’s media, saying: “She is safe and not in the Ukraine,” without disclosing her daughter’s location. As the news of Kaya’s ‘suspected plight’ sent shockwaves around the world, Hayden was quick to point out (having seen first-hand the damage inflicted on Ukraine during her relationship with Wladamir) that Putin was entirely to blame and expressed her deep-rooted anger, saying: “I wish I was there fighting with you” to the Ukrainian people. Further condemning Russia, she went on to say: “This horrific moment in history sends a terrifying message: the message that in this day and age, in year 2022, it’s okay to violate the rights of free people and allow autocrats like Putin to take whatever they please.” Hayden’s close links with the country, that she regards as a second home, has not gone unnoticed by the Ukranians who are praising the actress for her support.

GOOD PARENTS Hayden and Wladamir first met in 2009 and split in 2011 before trying a brief reconciliation in

2013. They had their daughter in 2014 but split for good in 2018, after Hayden’s well-publicised battle with post-natal depression. Hayden and Wladamir remain firm friends and have both said in interviews that despite their relationship not working they co-parent Kaya very well together. The chief carer of Kaya is Wladamir, another reason the public were so distressed that the 7-year-old could have still been in the war-torn country during the rigorous attacks by Russia, that began on 24rd February. Both parents have said: “Kaya is safe now and has always been safe, we have shielded her from danger.”

READER OPINION Mark, 41 said: “Is every child in the Ukraine not as important as Kaya? The fact

that she is the child of famous parents does not make her any different to the other 15 million children suffering the pains of war? Why the special treatment.” Siobhan, 19, responded: “Kaya may be one child, but her ‘celebrity parentage’ automatically catapults her into the news – and with that a platform that says – is this right? “A child in immediate danger of unnecessary death” – urm, no. Point proven tenfold.

NEWS ENOUGH’S ENOUGH PRICEY Trust Katie Price to wade in with her puffy face, moronic/ monotone voice and actually steal newspaper headlines on the brink of World War 3. You have got to give it to the former glamour girl, 42, her appearance on ITV’s ‘Lorraine’ Show was a welcome distraction from the world crisis for a minute. Looking inflated and ill Katie’s 3 minutes on air were enough for even the public to think there is a bigger idiot on the planet than Putin. The ever-maternal Lorraine even pleaded with her “to stop having surgery” like her life depended on it. Oxygen thief Katie laughed her way through the interview brazenly (miraculously without moving a muscle) but despite her pre-show, filtered Instagram photos, the HDTV camera on the harsh light of ITV’s morning chat show never lied and showed Pricey’s cosmetic surgery splurge – ironically the reason she was on there, so proudly to show off - was a complete waste

of both time and money. Like her. Hilarious.

READER OPINION

Emma, 33, said: “Instead of watching Lorraine begging her guests not to say and do stupid things - why not have some ‘not stupid’ people on the show that can say ‘not stupid’ things. In 20 years of being subjected to the abhorrent individual that is Katie Price, has she ever said anything that’s worth listening to? NOPE. Don’t put us through it again! Thank god it was ITV - I would have demanded a full refund from my BBC licence fee.”

OLLY MURS FORCED TO CANCEL TOUR

Olly Murs has been rushed to hospital for emergency surgery on his knee and been forced to cancel all his summer shows. The ‘Troublemaker’ singer is devastated as he’s been forced to cancel all his upcoming commitments for the next 6 months, whilst in recovery. Speaking to fans on social media Olly said, “I have been trying my best to avoid having it done but the op was needed and it went well. I’m recovering in hospital but it means I’m having to cancel all my summer shows this year while I focus on my rehab.” Olly was lined up to perform at Haydon Park near Wimbledon on August 5th as part of his tour. Refunds are being offered to all his fans.

‘TOO BIG FOR HIS BOOTS’ MARK DROPPED BY ITV

TV star Mark Wright has reportedly been blacklisted by ITV for pulling out of his new fitness show after one day of filming AND being cheeky enough to let bosses know... by text. According to insiders, the former ‘TOWIE’ star has burnt all bridges with the channel who have said “his name is mud here now”. The news comes as the big budget, reality ITV series ‘The Games’ is now left in the lurch with one of their main stars going AWOL. Holly Willoughby is presenting the series which sees 12 celebs competing in fitness challenges against each other. Alex Scott has been signed as a trackside reporter while Chris Kamara is commentating. ITV bosses are now searching for a last minute replacement to not interrupt filming schedules too much.

STEM PLAYER HYPE

There is a lot of talk about the launch of Kanye West’s new album Donda 2, even more so as he has said the album will only be available on his portable music playing/mixing device, Stem Player. “Donda 2 will only be available on my own platform, the Stem Player,” West wrote on Instagram. “Not on Apple, Amazon, Spotify or YouTube. Today artists get just 12% of the money the industry makes. It’s time to free music from this oppressive system. It’s time to take control and build our own.” Stem Player retails at $200 and since announcing the album news on February 17th the rapper (now known as Ye) posted an update and company reports that he had made $1,3m selling 6,217 units in just 12 hours. Since the player launched in August 2021 it has sold 39,500 units making a total profit of $8.6 million. Kanye, 44, went on to say, “God has a plan. New frontier. Everyone that is supporting our revolution is

changing the game for all artists. We no longer have to bow to people who don’t truly care about music.” Reviews about Stem Player have been mixed though. Jay Peters reviewer for The Vault remarked on the soft feel of the Stem, which “makes it stand out from the many other metal and plastic gadgets I interact with every day. For someone who likes to make their own music, the Stem Player could be a mind-blowingly awesome tool.” PC Mag’s Jordan Minor wasn’t a huge fan of what he called the “unpleasant fleshy texture” of the player but said it was “an intriguing tool for creating and remixing music,” positively noting that technology like the Stem “lets total amateurs discover the joys of bending music to your will.” What is good and different about Stem is that it is allows users to control vocals, drums and bass as well as isolating track parts and adding effects. To date no other music player or platform has been able to do this. Whether it’s worth the $200 price tag remains to be seen.

FASHION GETS FUN

When Valentino recently displayed their Spring/Summer 2022 Collection there was one dress that really stood out – a cut out watermelon pink mini – that has already been snapped on ‘Euphoria’ actress Zendaya, the new face of the Italian fashion house. The new collection epitomises fun and the bold colours make this collection really stand out. According to Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli “This season, I really want to breathe life into the brand. We spent almost two years isolated and what I really want now is all about emotions, connections, people: life.” The pink dress, the beachy tousled hair and gladiator sandals scream effortless chic on Zendaya. Elsewhere on the Valentino catwalk, cut out mini dresses were firm favourites – in chic black and a bold blue draped top was another headline grabber (as pictured here).

RECIPE GRILLED STEAK SALAD WITH PESTO & CROSTINI This classic Italian recipe by Jamie Oliver is bursting with fresh herb flavour. Below is the standard way to make but you can also add pine nuts and parmesan cheese if desired. Cooking time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

(makes 2 portions) • 2 x 200g matured rib-eye steaks • olive oil, sea salt freshly ground black pepper • 1 sprig fresh rosemary, leaves picked and chopped • ½ tablespoon dried oregano • 2 slices ciabatta bread • 2 tablespoons green pesto • 1 clove garlic, cut in half • 100 g mixed salad leaves • Juice of 1 lemon 1. Lay the steaks on a chopping board and rub with olive oil. Season and sprinkle with the rosemary and oregano. Cover with greaseproof paper and bash lightly with a rolling pin until the steaks are slightly flattened out and the herbs and seasoning are pressed into the meat. 2. Put a large griddle pan on a high heat and as it’s heating up, toast the ciabatta on both sides. Keep the

toast warm. Shake any crumbs out of the griddle pan, then return to the heat and lay the steaks in it, side by side. 3. Cook for about 8 minutes, turning every minute, for a medium steak, or a little longer if you like your meat more cooked. Lift the steaks out of the pan and leave to rest somewhere warm. 4. Spoon a tablespoon of pesto onto each plate and smear out across the plate with the back of a spoon. 5. Place a steak on each plate and rub the toasted ciabatta with the garlic, drizzle with a little olive oil and put a piece on top of each steak. 6. Toss the salad leaves with the lemon juice, a lug of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. Divide the salad between the plates and serve.

WINE MATCH We would recommend a red wine with herbal flavours like Cabernet Franc to go with this Jamie Oliver dish. This French classic offers enough green notes to complement the pesto sauce’s strong green flavours without being too overbearing. Two other good wines matches are Chianti Classico and Beaujolais as they offer ample herbaceous flavours to complement the Pesto when served with steak.

THE BATMAN

BACK TO THE BOOZER

THE LEVIATHAN

Robert Pattinson, star of ‘Twilight’ and ‘Tenet’ stars as DC Comics vigilante Batman alongside an all-star cast in this Warner Bros action movie reboot, out in cinemas nationwide on March 4th. His evil nemesises, The Riddler and The Penguin, played by ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ actor Paul Danno and ‘In Bruges’ Colin Farrell, are back causing havoc in Gotham City, set to avenge past wrongdoings and take down Batman. Joining Pattinson in his quest for justice against these evil villains are Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Andy Serkis (Golam in ‘Lord of the Rings’) as his loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth. ‘The Hunger Games’ actor Jeffrey Wright plays Gotham Lieutenant James Gordon. Directed and written by ‘Cloverfield’s’ Matt Reeves, this latest instalment of ‘Batman’ is the first we’ve seen in a standalone movie since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in 2012 and according to trailers and reviews it shows a more funny side to the character with a lot of sarcasm and wit intwined in the script. Director Reeves has compared his version of Batman to the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, saying: “Rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse, I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s ‘Last Days,’ and the idea of this fictionalised version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor.” Everything we have seen and heard about the new Batman is getting us more hyped for a blockbuster. Something that is backed up by early box office projections.

Folk in the industry often refer to pub bands with derogation. However, Surrey favourites’ Ransom are determined to defy this misplaced perception with the release of their debut album ‘Back to the Boozer’ and one finger firmly raised towards the established order. Rarely, have we put on an album in our car and felt 39 minutes of our lives simply evaporated with such euphoric, fist punching joy! From their opening salvo ‘Vindication’ you go on a tour de force ‘Lockdown’ journey through political, racial and gender, issues, all given total ‘Ransomization.’ There’s even a song about a Louisiana Outlaw and another about Go Karting. Bemused you will be.... but happily. The choruses are big, the lyrics clever, guitar riffs and licks huge. With a thunderous bass so powerful we wondered if we might lose the car roof, all this to a thumping drum beat that made us want to put our foot hard to the floor. If this band are not swapping pub floors for concert halls by the end of the year, then there really is something seriously wrong. Surrey Rocks have secured Ransom as one of their three acts for their upcoming Awards ceremony. You can check out Ransom Rocks at a local pub near you soon. They play regularly in Reigate, Dorking, Guildford and Farnham at weekends.

A heady mix of historical fiction, myth and spooky realism, ‘The Leviathan’ is set in seventeenth century Norfolk during England’s bloody civil war. When Thomas Treadwater returns home from battle summoned by a troubling letter from his sister, he finds his family and farm in disarray and his mother and two of their servants accused of witchcraft and subsequently put behind bars by the local witch finder. Thomas is a level-headed sort of chap however - who doesn’t believe in witchery and superstition, but there are fantastical, impossible things going on that makes him question everything he believes. As Thomas unravels the mystery of what has happened, he uncovers not a tale of superstition but something dark and ancient, linked to a shipwreck years before. Something has awoken in England, and now it will not rest, the book teases. A dark and eery page turner you won’t be able to put down. The Leviathan is the debut novel from Rosie Andrews and has already made it to the top of The Sunday Times best seller list where its tipped to stay. A huge accolade for such a young novelist on her first outing. A dark and eery page turner you won’t be able to put down. More than just an entertaining fantasy read the book covers war, death, witchcraft, honour, love and betrayal.

A

s London Fashion Week draws to a close, Celebrity Journalist Angela Sara West gives the lowdown on the star-studded sustainable charity catwalk show she brought to our county during LFW last September, in collaboration with Surrey Rocks and kicked off by Pussycat Doll & ‘Dancing On Ice’ star Kimberly Wyatt. Angela also reveals how you can get your hands on coveted tickets to her next glamorous fashion show - with Lady Wimbledon on Tuesday 8th March. Join us at this unique 360° runway show on International Women’s Day. Victoria Beckham, Naomie Harris, Tom Daley… The stars have been styling it out at the capital’s fashion shows over the last few days. From the red carpet to our wardrobes, we’ve been witnessing another scintillating season of fashion weeks across the globe and last September saw Surrey launch its very own catwalk show during London Fashion Week (LFW), when I teamed up with LFW designer Vz Perfection and my photographer Earl Santos to bring the sustainable fashion movement to a celebrity catwalk in our county. A high-profile Pussycat Doll was among those striking a pose in ethical outfits for us, inspiring fans with a passion for fashion to start taking it slow and say ‘no’ to fast fashion. She’s among the many famous faces who have been making a shift to ecofriendly fashion and showing that Surrey Rocks when it comes to style, Weybridge-based Kimberly Wyatt and her international model husband Max Rogers put on the ethical garment glitz at the devine De Vere hotel venue in East Horsley, to promote the philanthropic celebrity, catwalk show. Our exclusive event was fittingly held in aid of fashion royalty Dame Vivienne Westwood’s Cool Earth charity, raising not only awareness of the issues caused by ‘fast fashion’ and the

26 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 07

importance of shopping sustainably, but funds for our charity of choice. We also lent support to local businesses, through a special silent auction accompanying our show. With big names, including Cate Blanchett and Joaquin Phoenix, joining the anti-throwaway fashion movement, sustainability is still very much a buzzword, and consumers are increasingly conscious of the fact that fast fashion - and wearing an outfit just once for Instagram – is detrimental to the environment. Eco-conscious fashionistas are also making a big fashion statement, and a pattern has been emerging of people following suit, but many still treat shopping as a pastime and clothing as disposable, meaning consumption is, sadly, still out of control.

KIM, MAX & VIVIENNE WESTWOOD In fact, fast fashion is the planet’s second worst polluter, and eco-conscious Kim & Max make a stand against it whenever they can. Playing their part in protecting the planet, the environmentally-conscious couple has also collaborated on a global eco campaign for Cool Earth, a charity working with rainforest villages to help halt deforestation and climate change, supported by its fashion designer patron Westwood. With big names on board supporting the #saynotofastfashion message, the ‘Dancing On Ice’ Star and her model hubby helped fundraise for Cool Earth through ticket sales to our fashion show and winning auction bids, featuring sensational VIP experiences and prizes from famous faces and products from sustainable businesses. The tickets were so popular that Surrey Rocks had a 180-strong wait list of guests that were unable to attend as ticket sales were already allocated before the show!

THE DE VERE TOWERS The setting for the philanthropic show was at Surrey’s stunning DeVere Horsley Estate, a fabulous fairytale castle. It’s no wonder this spectacular estate’s spiralling towers have starred in ‘The Crown’. Set amidst acres of Surrey parkland, and situated just outside Guildford, the Horsley Estate oozes history and heritage at every turn. Designed and built in 1820 by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, the house was later the seat of the Lovelace family, and comes complete with a beautiful lake, perfectly-manicured lawn, plus a panoramic terrace with pictureperfect views over its extensive grounds. The eco-conscious celebrity couple kindly took time out from their hectic schedules to wear sustainable Vz Perfection at the venue, creatively captured by photographer Earl from Wackpaper17 Photography. V had reworked her famous Dragonflies showstopper dress to make it sustainable for our shoot, showcased exquisitely by Kim in Earl’s phenomenal photos. “This Dragonflies dress is absolutely incredible...” said Kim, as she surveyed the meticulously-handsewn trailing material. Max, sported a pop of purple after V reworked a sumptuous velvet jacket, now also adorned with her signature Dragonfly design to compliment the jawdropping dazzling Dragonflies dress on Kim. V also mixed black denim with tweed for a second striking jacket, before Kim jumped up to dance in the chapel in a gorgeous upcycled blue silk dress from her ‘Colours of Life’ collection. The couple went on to wear several other sustainable brands during the shoot, including Nanushka (at Bernard Boutique, Esher) and Dea Kudibal (at Gigi Boutique, Haslemere) along with Scotch & Soda (at online retailer Paradise Boutique.) “I LOVED doing this shoot!” Kim told me. “I love living in Surrey and discovering gorgeous places like this in Horsley!” she said of the jaw-dropping estate. “What a gem…just dripping in elegance and history!” “We had a great time!” added Max. “It was REALLY lovely…”

ETHICAL FASHION With fast fashion quickly falling out of favour, many labels are having a radical rethink. In fashion, forever, is at the forefront of many brands’ minds. LFW designer V cares deeply about her products’ provenance and the issues surrounding fast fashion, and with “Circularity” – ‘designing out’ waste and ensuring clothing can be remade again and again - London Fashion

NEWS Week’s central concept and buzzword - she had cleverly upcycled ball gowns with modern twists’n’turns, transforming them into astonishing sustainable pieces. Caring for the planet doesn’t have to cost the earth, and to help us prove that point, I approached big names to be on board our Celebrity Charity Catwalk event. And so, on the evening of Friday 17th September 2021, Earl, V and I collaboratively brought London Fashion Week to Surrey.

CELEBS GRACE THE RED CARPET Our star-studded show, sponsored by Ajmal Perfumes, was an exclusive red-carpet affair, seeing our glitzy guests greeted with a glass of bubbly before rubbing shoulders with the stars of Surrey and beyond. Our dress code? ‘Glam’, in line with V’s new collection. As well-known and wellheeled, red carpet arrivals posed for photographer Earl and videographers Ashley Gray and Jack Kennedy from LightBox Media, the strains of our sensational Frank Sinatra tribute act, Frank Cognoscenti, could be heard serenading guests inside our glittering venue. The coveted VIP guest list boasted Made in Chelsea stars, EastEnders actors and Love Islanders, along with other showbiz names. Also rocking up to our castle for the evening were ‘stylists to the stars’ Marie and Claire from Surrey Frills. Reality TV star and influencer Danielle Broadbent was pretty in pink, perfectly paired with her equally pink-attired pal. Alex Best, model and ex-wife of football legend George Best, was also among the front-row crowd,

along with stars of EastEnders and other soaps. Love Islanderturned-boxing-pro Idris Virgo looked dashingly dapper dressed in his go-to fashion brand Howard & Co. making a smart and stylish statement on FROW alongside Lady Jessica Monaco, an internationally-published cover model and actress who has represented Kingston in Miss Great Britain. Plenty of press were in attendance, too, with everyone welcomed by my fab team, including Project Manager Julie Suttle, Co-ordinator Clare Waters and glamorous Assistants Claire Price and Helen Bourgogne before being ushered through the grand entrance to their photocall in the historic hotel bar, where a bespoke photohub alcove in the bar beckoned, beautifully bedecked with a black-and-gold balloon wall by Walton-on-Thames-based brand Basically Balloons. This striking nook became a popular hotspot for pics throughout the eventful evening. Behind the scenes, backstage was buzzing, under the attentive eye of Sam Cross Jones, Backstage Director for Fashion London and Top Model UK/Worldwide and Events Planner extraordinaire Rosanna Oliver-Black. Our famous and pro & amateur models from La Vida Model Management including the stunning Kate were made up and styled to perfection by second-to-none celebrity make-up artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis and her team at Studio One. Our top Surrey hair stylists - Terri Delahunty, Fi Rider-Morley, Diana Taybridge and Sean Alexander Hair Studio - topped off Lan’s unbeatable

makeovers on our amazing models with the coolest of hairstyles. With the stage set by Live Events Scenery Specialist David Sadler from Farnham-based Torpedo Factory Group - our enthusiastic guests made their way to the Great Hall housing the runway. Among the fash pack on that all-important FROW (front row) stylishly-cool ‘Made In Chelsea’ stars eagerly awaited an appearance by their modelling co-star Amelia Mist, among the other eco-conscious fashionistas out for their fashion fix. Stepping onto the stage to welcome the crowd to Surrey’s inaugural celebrity charity catwalk show during LFW, glamorous Cobham-based actress Debbie Arnold – who has starred in EVERY major TV soap, from EastEnders to Emmerdale - was our compere for the night. Debbie’s life in showbiz has seen her not only tread the Corrie cobbles, but also co-create the highly-successful, online chat show Wonderbirds during lockdown, with Loose Woman and Benidorm actress Sherrie Hewson, along with her other actor friends Harriet Thorpe and Dee Anderson. Debbie also co-presents myth-busting celebrity beauty tips show The Beauty Angels with model and actress Linda Lusardi and recently founded Surrey Singletons, hosting popular events for single Surreyites looking for love. Enthralling the audience with her hosting talents too, Debbie took to the mic to announce proceedings, which started on the big screen before live music came from a couple of our

NEWS celebrity models and special guests, ending in a celebrity, catwalk spectacle. The audience was firstly treated to a special video message from Kim & Max about the show, which we pre-recorded at our photoshoot with them, followed by a montage of cover interviews with the famous pair, plus Earl’s pics of our promo shoot for the show and our fashion feature for Surrey Rocks. Up next, a montage of cover interviews with other famous faces including ‘A Place in the Sun’ presenter Laura Hamilton - who kindly offered a VIP afternoon tea experience with herself at her Purley restaurant & coffee shop Lord Roberts on the Green to our accompanying charity auction – along with my interview with daredevil adventurer Bear Grylls, who boasts an on-site Bear Grylls Survival Academy at the venue. Another specially-recorded video message of support came from former Strictly pro Flavia Cacace & her Hollywood actor husband Jimi Mistry (whom she met on the hit BBC dancing show). The dancing duo mentioned they had recently moved from Guildford to Devon to switch to a sustainable lifestyle to live the good life and help protect our planet.

STAR PERFORMANCES Along with their passion for fashion, many of our famous models participating in the show have a penchant for performing, so I invited a few of them to firstly take to the stage to sing. First up to show off her creative talents, and one of V’s hot new sustainable pieces, was Hollywood & Bollywood movie star Sofia Hayat, who dressed in an ethereal flowy pink number to perform songs from her new spiritual healing album, ‘Wisdom of the Mother’. More magical music followed from Surrey’s own singer-songwriter Cassa Jackson, donning another gorgeously-upcycled Vz gown. One of the hottest stars in music, the super-talented Surreyite showcased her latest single, singing her heart out to a captivated audience, just before going on tour with JLS! Another pitch-perfect performance came from our special guest, the phenomenal songstress Justine Afante, who stole the nation’s hearts on being crowned the winner of ‘The Voice Kids’. Blowing everyone away with her incredible singing voice at just 13, she looked pretty as a picture in a hot pink dress upcycled by V, her family beaming with pride on front row as our final sensational singer of the evening belted out beautiful backto-back renditions of ‘Never Enough’ from ‘The Greatest Showman’ and Adele’s ‘When We Were Young’. “It was magical…” she told me post performance. “So many dreams come true. I’ve never sung before at a fashion show and can’t wait to do it again! I felt like a princess.” “Justine’s voice was first-class,” John Altman, AKA Nasty Nick in EastEnders and another of our VIP guests on FROW, told me following her powerful performance.

A MODEL MIX On a mission to make it an inclusive show, our mix of celebrity and pro models came in all shapes and sizes and ages, too. Walking the ramp along with actress/singer Sofia Hayat and Surrey’s singer/ songwriter Cassa Jackson was popular ‘Made In Chelsea’ star Amelia Mist, Surrey’s very own 2021 Love Islander all-singing-all dancing Amy Day, singer/songwriter Stacey Jackson and former ‘EastEnders’ actor Matt Lapinskas, also from Surrey. Pro and amateur models, meanwhile, ranged in age from 13-58, and with a plus-size model gracing the runway to boot, our show was inclusive to all including the stunning Sophie Davies, who works with Gok Wan and can often be seen parading outfits on ITV This Morning’s catwalk. LVMM’s Kate & Maxine Johara, who is also signed to the agency, modelled alongside make-up artist/model/influencer Zoe Ilana Hill. V’s close friend Angelina Vajja made her LFW catwalk debut, along with our gorgeous young teen models

NEWS Sophia Burgoyne, Layla Oliver and Molly Stanton. Round one on the ramp saw an introduction to V’s world of designing, with a beautiful bridal collection and offthe-peg pieces showcasing a combination of her creativity and versatility. This commercial wearable collection also showcased wedding dresses for the mother-of-the-bride, along with young people having fun in V’s quirky styles and creations. Round two saw our celebrity and pro models back on the catwalk for V’s new Spring Summer sustainable range. These showstopping garments included the sustainable pieces previously modelled by Kim & Max during our promo, interspersed with other new hotoff-the-press numbers, being displayed for the first time to a delighted crowd of onlookers. Hollywood & Bollywood actress Sofia Hayat boldly stepped out in V’s brandnew, showstopper dress; featuring 220 metres of tulle, using cut-offs from the wedding dresses she makes. This was lovingly created with the leftover denim fabric from her ‘Colours of Life’ collection from the previous year. “The energy of the show was super good, and I loved how the clothes made me feel,” Sofia told me. “It’s the way fashion should be… fashion shouldn’t just be for a particular type or particular look, especially at Fashion Week… Fashion Week has to be inclusive, otherwise it’s a form of inequality, so they’re creating inequality in fashion shows, I believe. And V is catering for everyone, from 13 year-olds to 60+, everybody can wear the clothes.” From cut-away sleeves to add-ons, this collection was completely sustainable, the main message, of course, being the importance of reducing waste, and fighting back against fashion’s throwaway culture, raising awareness of the issues caused by ‘fast fashion’ and the importance of shopping sustainably to protect our planet. Amelia Mist literally skipped onto the catwalk and gave us a twirl, her infectious personality delighting the crowd, including her MIC mates on FROW and planet-passionate Amelia’s proud-aspunch parents holding her cute pooch, Princess. “I was so nervous!” the spiritual reality TV star revealed to me outside on the red carpet when we caught up after the show. “It was probably the most petrifying thing I’ve ever done, but you’ve got to create those boundaries and break them down and enjoy it, and it was for such a very special cause. When you do it once, you

get over that fear and think, ‘okay, it’s actually not so bad!’” Our Surrey-born Love Island model Amy Day partnered with Hugo Hammond on last summer’s show, and has since modelled for the likes of Miss Pap, Shein, Iconic and Pretty Little Thing. “It was such a privilege to be asked to take part in the charity fashion show! Not only was it great fun on the night itself, but it was an honour to meet so many incredible people and hear about the work of Cool Earth.” Amy’s captivated guests included Nick Howard Lanes, a designer in TV as well as Fashion Style. “I’m set to be the ‘Gok Wan for gents’, he told me, and revealed he was styling Ugo Monye and Sam Quek for the newly-rebranded ‘Question of Sport’ at the time. “I’m a personal stylist helping men to overcome insecurities and mental health through owning a sense of style.” Our one-and-only male model, Surrey actor Matt Lapinskas, said, “I had an absolutely amazing time modelling! The range was so classy and all fitted so well. My jacket was my favourite - the whole concept of reusing what you already have is brilliant. I would like to thank everyone on the team that was there… from hair and make-up teams, to dressers and everyone else working on the show!” Canadian singer/songwriter/actress and author Stacey Jackson also enjoyed striking a pose on the catwalk, “It was such a pleasure to participate in the fashion show,” she told me afterwards. “The dresses were so lovely, and everything was so well organised! Everyone from the people backstage, to the people in the audience were awesome. We all had an amazing night!” The final round finished flamboyantly with a full-on finale. Everyone put their hands together as all models lined up on the ramp and designer V took to the stage before taking a bow, beckoning myself and Earl to join her as she delivered her ‘thank you’ speech. After words of thanks and flowers were exchanged, it was time to party, and our supercool DJ Rodri from Social Mix was there to make sure everyone did just that. As top tunes span on the decks, the dancefloor filled with fashionistas and party guests, while others tucked into mouth-watering tantalising Spanish delights out front with Zane from La Paella Paella, as enjoyed on our screens by ‘This Morning’ hosts Holly Willoughby & Phillip Schofield. V created sustainable luxury gift bags for attendees, which my team filled with goodies I’d sourced from famous faces and sustainable Surrey businesses, including singer Ellie Goulding’s Served seltzer, sustainable beer by Crumbs Brewing and fragrant samples from our sponsor, Ajmal Perfumes.

SILENT AUCTION OF STAR EXPERIENCES Our hugely-successful fashion event over, the spotlight then shone on our sizzling SUSTAINABIDDITY silent auction, also in aid of Cool Earth and accompanying our star-studded show. The show’s

Rihanna R

ihanna has captivated the world with her incredible vocal talents, become an internationally renowned designer with Savage X Fenty, dabbled in acting, released a beauty line and now after years of speculation whether she would eventually join ‘the club’, has revealed that her and boyfriend Rocky A$AP are expecting a baby later this year. She is crossing things off her to do list with panache.

MINI RI RI Like everything Rihanna does, she let the world know she was pregnant in the most Rihanna way possible. While out with Rocky in Harlem, NYC, she was being followed by the paparazzi and had a moment where she just flung open her jacket to reveal her baby bump in full view of the awaiting paps. The press coverage was monumental, not only because she was standing in a park in the freezing cold snow, but because the bump was so huge. Despite the rumour mill whirring, Rihanna had evaded the media finding out about her pregnancy for a good 4 months it is expected. With no due date or sex of the baby to be officially announced, Rihanna’s pregnancy is going to be big news this year. Watch this space.

ROLLERCOASTER ROMANCES MUSIC MOGUL The ‘Diamonds’ singer has been in and out of relationships with high profile stars for years, including a well-publicised relationship with Chris Brown that ended after 2 years in 2009 when the ‘Freaky Friday’ hitmaker physically assaulted Rihanna. She then had a seven-year, on-off relationship with Drake and a 2015 fling with Travis Scott as well as dating baseball player Matt Kemp for just under a year. Rihanna first started seeing rapper Rocky A$AP, who she has been friends with since their first 2012 collaboration, in 2019. It wasn’t until May 2021 that the couple officially confirmed their romance though. Speaking to GQ Magazine earlier in the year, 33-year-old Rocky called her “the one” and also described her as “the love of my life.” Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, both wearing pieces by Gucci including gloves from the adidas x Gucci collection. Rihanna started her music career at the age of 15 after she performed for music producer Evan Rogers and Carl Struken in 2003 after flying from the Bahamas to audition. Her debut album ‘Music of the Sun’ was released by Def Jam in 2005. But it wasn’t until 2007 that the singer gained global recognition with the release of her album ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ and best-selling track ‘Umbrella’. Since then, there has been nothing stopping RiRi to achieving global music star status. With 14 number ones, sales of over 250 million records worldwide, she is now ranked as the wealthiest ever female musician - with an estimated net worth of $1.7 billion. Rihanna has produced eight albums altogether, the last one called ‘Anti’ back in 2016. She decided to press pause on her music career to pursue her other business interests – namely her fashion and beauty

lines – but has always told fans she will be back in the studio one day.

FASHION FORWARD Rihanna plays the part of fashion royalty and urban princess seamlessly, which is another part of her wide-ranging appeal. She oozes body confidence, while her hourglass figure and statuesque legs make her every designer’s dream. She has influenced many fashion trends in the past few years as well as having been inaugurated into the fashion hall of fame. It was only going to be a matter of time till savvy businesswoman Rihanna got in on the action. After taking a break from her music career, Rihanna (born Robyn Rihanna Fenty) launched her lingerie brand Savage X Fenty and later she teamed up with luxury fashion group LVMH to launch Fenty in 2019. Due to Covid she “put on hold” the Fenty fashion commitment and poured all her attention into growing Fenty Beauty (her make-up and skincare range with LVMH’s Kendo) now worth a whopping $2.8bn and the hugely successful Savage X Fenty, reportedly worth £1bn, according to Forbes.

the who’s who of pop culture, music and choreography and even has its own show on Amazon Prime, another money spinner for her. While Rihanna has always been an advocate of promoting positive body image, she has also used her platform for good. In 2006 she created the Believe Foundation to help terminally ill children and in 2012 created the Clara Lionel Foundation in Barbados to honour her grandparents and provide oncology and medicine to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados. In 2020 she donated $5m to the Covid 19 Relief Fund and a further $2.1m to provide support and resources to individuals and children suffering from domestic violence amid the lockdown.

POSITIVE ROLE MODEL Another huge reason for Savage X Fenty’s success, apart from selling exquisitely produced lingerie at affordable prices, is the inclusiveness of the brand. Rihanna uses a wide range of models in every dress size to showcase the brand. It has been positively received by fans and her Savage X Fenty fashion shows attract

et’s face it, contouring isn’t leaving the beauty world anytime soon. Celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani and Sandra Bullock are huge fans. Contouring instantly enhances your natural bone structure to make you photoshoot ready in just a few steps. With the right techniques and preparation, you can have flawless skin contoured to highlight your best features and play down your worst, at the swipe of a brush.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE 1. PREP YOUR SKIN

Knowing how to prepare the skin is the most important step to leaving you with a healthy, natural glow. Before you start to prepare, you need to determine your skin type. There are four types of skin: oily, dry, sensitive and normal. Some people have a combination of different skin types in different areas of their skin. Start with washing and exfoliating the skin with a gentle daily use exfoliator to remove dead cells from the surface of your skin, this helps reveal the fresh cells and gives you a brighter and healthier complexion. The next step is choosing a good moisturiser. If you have oily skin, use an oil free one however dry skin needs a moisturiser with all the right nourishment and essential oils to help soothe and revive the skin. Finally prepare your skin with a primer for make-up application. Primer is a must; it works as a base for foundation that keeps your make-up lasting longer.

2. FLAWLESS FOUNDATION A great foundation is essential for flawless looking skin - but it can be tricky to get it right. Foundation is worn throughout the entire day so this product should offer your skin more than just make-up. Use a foundation that boosts hydration or has a builtin SPF. You also need to determine the look you’re going for, whether you want the skin to look dewy, matte, natural or even.

46 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 07

The most important step in selecting your proper foundation shade is to identify your skin’s undertone. If your undertone is cool, choose a natural, beige or cocoa shade. If your undertone is warm choose a golden, tawny, honey or chestnut shade. It’s important to get the best colour match possible. Always test the foundation on your jawline and try to go for a product slightly lighter than your skin tone. Avoid piling on layers of product, there are lots of lightweight foundations that provide a good coverage and leave you with sheer, soft skin.

4. HIGHLIGHTING 3. CONTOURING A little contouring around the outline of your face gives your make-up an almost HD effect. When contouring placement is key and if you’re new in the game it can be difficult to know what to use and where. As a general rule select a shade of that is one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone. If your skin has a warm undertone, then you’re in luck as the majority of golden-brown shades will suit you. For skin with cool or yellow undertones, try warm peach shades that have a tan to soft brown undertone. Contouring tends to follow an E shape around the face. You would contour in places where your face would naturally be shadowed from the sun. Follow our handy guide here and tweak slightly according to your face shape for maximum effect.

BEST AREAS TO CONTOUR

Hairline - right below your hairline at the top of your forehead, contour a little extra at the temples to visually slim the forehead. Nose - along the left and right sides on your nose. Cheekbones - create sleek cheekbones by contouring the hollows of the cheek (to find them suck in!) Jawline - from the top of your chin to your ears and along the outer edges of the chin. The key is blending which makes it important to be using a good blending brush. Powders are easier to blend and give a more natural look whereas creams and liquids give more powerful, dramatic results.

Highlighting is when you add light and reflection to certain areas for the face, making them appear more outstanding and eye-catching. The idea is to highlight areas that will catch the light. One simple rule to remember is highlighting tends to follow a C shape over your entire face. If you don’t have a highlighter handy you can use concealer or a foundation a shade lighter than your usual shade.

BEST AREAS TO HIGHLIGHT

Nose - down the centre of your nose to visually slim. Cheekbones - along the top of your cheekbones. Chin and Lips - the centre of the chin and the area between the lips and nose, right in the dip of the cupids bow. Brow bone - (under your eyebrows) and in the inner corners of your eyes to make them appear bigger. Dewy looks are very popular during the spring/summer months leaving your skin with a healthy-looking fresh glow.

TOP TIP: An illuminating, liquid highlighter on the cheekbones gives your face a more fresh, radiant appearance.

5. FINISHING THE LOOK If you feel your face looking a little dull without some colour, then consider applying a small amount of blush to the apples of your cheeks but be sure to blend well with the other products on your face. Finish off with some lipstick and eye make-up. If you’re going for a bold or smoky eye then be sure to use a light or subtle lip colour to complete the look. Finally, topcoat your make-up with a setting spray or powder to prevent any make-up meltdowns.

ronzed eauty

he first thing to say about spray tanning is that it is not just spraying brown dye on people. When you have a spray tan you will go brown instantly but this is just the guide colour which will come off when you have your first shower. The magic happens when the DHA (the

48 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 07

main active ingredient of spray tanning solutions) reacts with the amino acids in the skin to turn them brown. This reaction (known as the Maillard reaction) is much the same as the reaction that turns a cut apple brown if you leave it out. This happens several layers into the epidermis which

is why a spray tan lasts much longer than the guide colour. Unfortunately (for your spray tan) however, healthy skin replaces the epidermis every month or so and since the tan does not penetrate all the way though the epidermis you can expect your tan to last somewhere around a week, maybe a bit longer if you look after it. So how do you look after it? Well before I start talking about what you should do after your tan, perhaps it would make more sense putting the horse before the cart and saying what you should do before your tan. There is a fairly short list of do’s and don’ts (which I sometimes refer to as the Tan Commandments!) Some of them are just health and safety stuff like don’t even get a tan if you have certain skin conditions or recent wounds, including unhealed tattoos. If you have not had a spray tan recently it is best to have a patch test to make sure you are not allergic to anything in the solution. This is colossally rare but is a requirement of most insurance companies. Just before your tan you should not have a steaming hot bath or shower as this opens the pours of the skin which can fill up with solution making giving a small dot like effect. However because of the nature of the spray tanning gun, the air coming out can be quite cold and close the pours quick enough. Incidentally the cold air coming out of the front of the gun is compensated for by warm air coming out of the spray machine, in much the same way as some fridges work, so you may be freezing whilst your spray tanner is sweltering.

Another crucial thing is not to use moisturiser before your tan as this works as a barrier. This includes using soap with moisturiser in it like Dove. It is fine to use it when your tan is done but not before. Often the spray tan artist will use a bit of moisturiser to protect parts of the body that do not want too much tan on them, particularly the elbows and knees, sometimes it can be used to protect the finger nails and to keep the tan away from the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet which should never be tanned as it looks unnatural. You do not really want to be putting a new tan on top of one that is wearing out because most tans fade somewhat unevenly, for example the face is usually washed far more than the rest of the body and your tan will often fade on your face first. One of the latest trends in spray tanning is ‘tan bombs’ which are just bath bombs that claim to remove old tan.

CONTOUR SPRAY TANS On the subject of tanning trends, spray tan contouring is increasingly becoming ‘a thing’. This is a technique I first encountered with my Beau Bronze LVL2 course but learnt more about with Katie Quinn’s complete contouring academy and most recently the LVL3 Sienna X Master Tanner programme. This contouring can be done on the face or the body or both. I will be honest here and say that most of my clients are happy enough with a standard tan. Contouring, apart from requiring more training and practice, takes much longer and therefore will cost more, usually at least twice as much more. It also (well the way I do it for body contouring) requires an air brush as well as the normal HVLP spray gun. Facial contouring is easier and the principles that will be familiar to anyone that has ever done a make-up course. If a face is particularly round you can make it look less so by darkening the outsides of the cheeks. If a face is square then darkening the corners can help. An oblong face can be made rounder by strategically tanning the forehead and chin and so on.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 07

49

FEATURES

You can get further into it by trying to change the appearance of some features, so for instance if you have a very wide nose, tanning just the outsides can make it appear thinner and faint vertical stripes down the neck can help draw attention away from a double chin. In principle you could just tan the bits that need contouring but clients tend to want to leave a spray tanner looking brown all over so it is far more common to use a lighter tan for the all-over tan and a darker tan for the contoured places. For the face I just use a high DHA tanning mousse. The benefit of facial spray tanning contouring, over just make-up, is simply that it lasts a good deal longer. I am more convinced of the benefits of body contouring since this is not something you would normally address with make-up. The principles, however, are much the same. If you have wide hips, darkening the outsides of them makes them look thinner, if you have wide thighs again tanning the outside will make them appear slimmer. As will tanning areas on the inside of the leg. Boobs can be made to appear slightly perter by tanning a curved line over the top of them. This can get quite in depth. One of the standard tricks is to spray a thin line above and below the clavicle. This

makes it ‘pop’ and if you can see, or think you can see, someone’s bones then that gives the impression of thinness. Following the lines of the biceps can make them look more defined and you can even spray a six pack on someone! Forget the gym! For this I use an airbrush. It is possible to use the same HVLP gun you used for the all-over tan but I find you get far more control with an airbrush and you don’t need to worry about changing the solution or the residual solution in the gun. If you are looking for a great spray tan get in touch with Andy the Spray Tanning Guy now.

Tuesday March 8th brings International Women’s Day and what better way to celebrate by showcasing the women who have shaped and improved the world we live in through their admirable talents and ambitious mindsets. We have set aside a range of woman which differ in age and culture but all have the same thing in common: they have inspired others. From the life changers who made history to the celebrities which use their high status’ in good vain. The world we live in would not be the same for women if these ladies had never stepped out of the norm and made historic stands which would last forever.

LIfe CHaNGers

Emmeline Pankhurst Because she…

formed the Women’s

Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903 whose members were later dubbed ‘the suffragettes’ in support of women’s suffrage and the right to vote. If it wasn´t for Pankhurst heading the movement and organising demonstrations, hunger strikes and even arson attacks, it is unlikely that women would be entitled to the same equal voting rights as men.

Rosa Park Because she… is a civil rights activist regarded as an international symbol of dignity, bravery and strength. Her refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 helped global efforts to end the segregation of public facilities in the US. Supported by a young Dr Martin Luther King Jr, Parks boycott lasted over a year and helped to end black/white segregation.

54 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 07

Princess Diana

Jane Austin

Because she… is an incredible author and an inspirational feminist. Her creation of the heroine Elizabeth Bennet taken from the nations favourite book ‘Pride and Prejudice’ envisioned woman everywhere. Jane had to struggle to get her book published due having little education and even when ‘Pride and Prejudice’ was first offered to a publisher in 1797 it was refused without a glance. After Austen´s death the books were published and, two centuries later, her novels still touch people’s hearts like no other author in history.

Because she… used her royal status to do good and bring charitable causes to the public eye. She singlehandedly brought the landmine issue to the world’s attention, which resulted in representatives from 100 countries signing the Oslo Treaty, intending to rid the world of landmines. Diana developed the name of ‘The People ´s Princess’ as she was the world’s role model from helping homeless to her charity work in AIDS research. The world was in despair after her sudden death in a car crash which killed her and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed in Paris in 1997.

Anne Frank Because she… wrote a diary during the World War II about her life during the Holocaust. The whole time she was hiding in an office building, attempting to escape the Nazis. Her life changing diary was internationally acclaimed after her father published it two years after her demise. It was translated into various languages and even an adaptation of a movie was created in her memory.

fIGure HeaDs Margaret Thatcher Because she…paved the way for women in politics and business by becoming the first British female prime minister from 1979 to 1990. A grocer´s daughter, Thatcher was brought up to believe in hard work and public service. Despite several failed attempts in politics throughout her career, she eventually was elected as leader of the Conservative Party and won the General Election. Although unpopular among working classes, Thatcher dubbed the Iron Lady, was successful in a number of policies including the Falklands War and privatising public services.

Michelle Obama Because she… is the first lady of the United States. Michelle has made a huge mark in the world in only 4 years since her husband Obama came to office. A graduate of Princeton and then Harvard Law, she used her new found international fame to encourage movements to combat childhood obesity and increase support for troops as well as helping more Americans to obtain higher education. She is widely considered as one of the most influential first lady´s in US history.

Hilary Clinton Because she… is a US presidential candidate and the only first lady to run for public office. Although she didn´t win, she gains respect of women everywhere as she showcases that women can be just as powerful as men. She also encourages girls to support each other instead of being jealous. Hilary had to undergo upsetting situations (namely her husband´s indescretion with Monica Lewinsky) but that did not stop her from going from strength to strength and relishing the power she has worked so hard for.

Angelina Jolie

Because she…is known for splitting her time between her extensive humanitarian work and pioneering celebrity adoption. Four of her seven children are adopted, children who would’ve otherwise suffered in poverty. She went on her first overseas mission; an 18 day trip to war torn Sierra Leone and Tanzania. She then followed that up with a two-week trip back to Cambodia which led to her being named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. Her good willed work never seems to stop as she also set up the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation to create environmental security, peace and stability in communities around the world.

Meryl Streep

Because she… is an actress who is not afraid to air her opinion. From openly speaking about the importance of gender equality and bringing up ageism in the media. Her honesty and integrity about issues that matter inspire women of all ages not to shy away. So women stand up and be

Drew Barrymore Because she… is a mother, businesswoman, actress, producer and director. She balanced the launch of her brand new make-up line ‘Flower’ whilst expecting her new baby. The purpose of her make-up is to inspire woman to feel good about themselves and who better to promote this than a lady who is comfortable in her own skin, selfless, witty and confident.

56 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 07

Because she… promotes feminism and goodwill. Growing up playing a main character in one of the biggest children films ever, Watson understands she has a young following. She unleashed the epic ‘He for She’ speech at the UN that made people realise she is a true feminist in a public arena where many actresses of her calibre shy away. She continues to fight for gender equality insisting this is “her true passion in life.”

MODeLs Twiggy Because she… is the most iconic figure of the sixties who inspired the introduction of London Fashion Week and alongside Mary Quant pioneered “the mini skirt”. She was nominated for ‘Face of 1966’ and ‘British Woman of the Year 1966’ and she extended her persona trying out modelling and acting. Twiggy is known for her out there style and her beauty is edgy but timeless.

Cara Delevinge Because she… is the IT girl right now. You will see her face on billboards, TV and magazines worldwide. She uses her big name to empower fans across the world to ‘stop labelling and start living!’ She shot to fame through walking the runways for the likes of Burberry and Givenchy and her trademark eyebrows have set her apart from the crowd - proving quirky beauty is still in.

sINGers Madonna Because she… has it all. Her music, beauty and existence has lived on for years to entertain and inspire women of all ages. The material girl has released her 13th studio album at the age of 56, she exemplifies the idea that age is a state of mind and she plans to banish ageism for once and all.

Lady Gaga Because she… is in a world of her own! She teaches woman that individuality is key and it is ok to be different. From her show stopping outfit choices and her motivational songs such as ‘Born this Way’ she really is in a league of her own and an inspiration to woman everywhere.

Nina Simone

Because she… is an inspirational singer. Her fame derives from her association with the civil rights movement in which classic songs such as ‘Four Women’ emerged. She was born into a poor family and her quick talent with music and playing the piano at age of 3 helped her to earn the opportunity to study at Juilliard as a teenager and her legacy still lives on to this day.

fasHION Coco Chanel Because she… is an international designer who trademarked the little black dress and suits. She was raised in an orphanage and taught how to sew. Coco used her imagination and creativity to climb to the top,

an arduous task in itself given that designers of the time were only from upper class families. If it was not for this wonderful lady and her boundless creativity, you may have never been able to wear a pair of trousers as they were strictly for men only.

Diane Von Furstenberg Because she… is a world acclaimed fashion designer! Her style takes the form of comfort with a nod to the latest fashion trends. Diane was the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. She went on to be a successful student whilst attending university in Switzerland and her hunger for independence led her to become a socialite in New York hanging out with people who did not care about money. Diane is a self-made successful women. When her initial business was not a success she started again from scratch and made it to the top due to sheer determination.

Natalie Massenet Because she… is a successful female entrepreneur. Natalie is the founder of internationally successful fashion portal ‘Net-aporter.’ The business was launched from her flat in Chelsea and she personally raised the £1.2 million start-up costs. Since 2013 she has been the chairwoman of the British Fashion Council. Natalie has been single handily changing the way designer fashion is retailed to the public. Her business has been going strength to strength including the print magazine ‘Porter’ which was created in 2014.

BENEFITS OF BARRE

arre is the new buzzword in fitness. A great way to get fit and stay in shape, Barre is based on the strength and conditioning component of ballet dancers’ training. The workout also helps strengthen and tone your muscles without increasing bulk all while improving posture. However, be warned, while Barre is described as ‘low impact’ it does not mean it’s ‘easy’. Each element of the workout is carefully choreographed to target and isolate specific muscle groups and will have you feeling the burn in no time - in a good way! Clare Fisher, owner of Surrey-based Ballero, believes the 40 plus age group are consistently underserved and under prioritised in terms of the health and wellness industry and that Barre can considerably help.

07 58 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 06

“As we get older, we need to listen to what our bodies need in terms of exercise,” Clare explains. “Especially as we approach the peri-menopause and menopause, activity that protects our joints, helps us maintain bone density and improve flexibility are so important.” Client feedback demonstrates the efficacy of this exercise method. Regular Barre client Katy was astonished to realise that she no longer needed her regular chiropractor appointment after consistently training with Clare at the barre. Not only did she feel considerably fitter and healthier she ended up saving hundreds of pounds on expensive chiropractor appointments. Ballero classes also aim to encourage and motivate with fun, informal classes in a non-competitive environment. To quote another Barre client Kim: “Fridays class is my weekly treat.” A lover of Pilates for years, Clare discovered the joy of Barre workouts in 2019. She found the strength and conditioning benefits to be so brilliant that she trained with the fabulous Barreworks studio on their accredited instructor training programme. Then just as she became qualified, Covid struck. Undeterred, Clare continued to push

ahead learning significant new IT skills along the way and delivering regular classes online. A phased approached has seen Studio classes return safely and successfully as Covid measures have been relaxed. After working so hard to launch and maintain Ballero in 2020 and early 2021, Clare was delighted to receive the honour of making the finals in the 2021 Spelthorne Business Awards, receiving first runner-up prize in the ‘Best New Start Up’ category. Clare currently teaches both Studio and Zoom classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from her home studio in Lower Sunbury and evening classes at the Riverside Arts Centre in Sunbury-on-Thames.

A lot of my work comes from exploring the North Downs, Isle of Wight, South Wales (where I grew up) the Lake District and sometimes beautiful sunny places if I am lucky enough - but basically wherever I find myself. My aim is to evoke emotions felt when we experience nature. My work is based on the properties of colour, the effects generated by light and movement which then creates the mood and the energy. My inspiration is drawn from light and reflections which change constantly over land, sea and skyscapes. My paintings start with a layering process using brushes and pallet knives. I mainly work in Acrylics but sometimes adding other mediums like inks and pastels. I use a vibrant palette. I try to keep the work as spontaneous as I possibly can, so nothing looks overworked. There definitely isn’t a better feeling in the world than finishing a painting, standing back from it and thinking WOW!

OUR EXPERIENCE We arrived at The Grumpy Mole in Tadworth and were greeted by a friendly, front of house manager who asked if we

starters available we went for the Crispy Bacon and Melted Cheese Potato Skins with Sour Cream & Chive Dip. Cooked perfectly with crispy bacon and lashings of cheese - a real treat! We also selected the Homemade Satay Chicken Kebabs with a delightful Peanut Sauce and Cucumber, Chilli & Coriander Salsa. The chicken was tender and superbly marinated – perfectly offset by the sweetness of the Peanut Sauce and tanginess from the Salsa. A definite must try.

FOR MAINS With 17 wide ranging Main Course options including The Grumpy Mole’s famous Steak on the Stone, Chargrilled Burgers, Sri Lankan Curry, Traditional Beef Stroganoff and

Fresh Sea Bass; selecting just one was a real quandary! As it was a cold February day we opted for the popular Steak & Ale Pie with Creamy Mash and Seasonal Vegetables. There was an abundance of lean, melt-in-the-mouth steak in the pie, a crispy top pastry case and the gravy was packed full of flavour. It’s also good to hear of the choice and diversity of The Grumpy Mole menu as there are 3 different

pies to choose from depending on the day – and you can choose to have with fries or new potatoes if you wish. Our second main was the Pan Roasted Rump of English Lamb, another Grumpy Mole favourite. On arrival it looked almost too good to eat – served colourfully with a Minted Pea Puree, Sauteed Peas & Chorizo, Dauphinoise Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables all drizzled in a delicious Honey &

Thyme Jus. An absolutely superb dish. The lamb was succulent and cooked to perfection with the sides packing just as much punch and flavour as the lamb. This is the sort of dish our tasters described as being more akin to the quality of a Michelin starred restaurant. Well done Grumpy Mole!

FOR DESSERT Not that we had much room.... but we were intrigued to see if it was up to the high standards of the Starters and Mains – and indeed it was. We had the Chef’s Own Crème Brulee which was deliciously creamy with a perfectly blasted sugar coating that cracked upon tapping with our spoon. It was served with a fruit compote and homemade shortbread biscuits garnished with strawberries and blueberries and dusted in icing sugar. It looked and tasted divine and we were sold. All three courses were perfect – we will definitely be back again soon. One of, if not, the best gastropub we have ever visited.

for one know the importance of exercise and the impact this has on your physical and mental health. You will probably be surprised to know that I used to be a Physiotherapist for 7 years before I had children. I started my rotations in the NHS and worked my way up to a Rehabilitational Specialist in a busy City clinic. I used to love integrating exercise programmes into my patient’s sessions to help them achieve their goals, whether it was to be able to

IN YOUR STEP run a marathon after a ligament rupture, helping someone walk after a knee replacement or simply eliminating back pain in an office worker. I have always dipped in and out of exercise since having children, but after I discovered I had a large ‘diastasis recti’ after my second child was born, I decided to take exercise seriously. During pregnancy, as your baby grows, the connective tissue that joins your stomach muscles together widens and thins, creating a gap. The amount of separation can vary. After pregnancy the gap can remain, known as diastasis recti. If you think that you may have this, then I would recommend you have an assessment with a Women’s Health Physiotherapist. Six Physio are a chain of private practices. They have got some incredible Women’s Health Speciality Physiotherapists who will make a formal assessment and work together with you to rectify the problem and achieve your goals. You may think it’s as easy as doing some sit-ups to strengthen the muscles again, but actually in many cases this can make it worse. I cannot stress enough the importance of seeing someone professional for this before you embark on an exercise programme. After a small home programme to get the correct muscles working for my diastasis, it was time for me to embark on a more hardcore, sweat induced exercise programme. After extensive research, I have been doing reformer Pilates sessions at U Pilates in Cobham and I am hooked. It gets the endorphins going and helps me work muscles

that I feel have been asleep for years! Pilates is something that I think is the gold standard of all exercise. It is integral in the maintenance of good posture, supporting the joints and of course to strengthen the core. Pilates on a reformer machine is another level and hits muscles that I can guarantee you didn’t know existed! A reformer machine is basically a moving platform with attachments that create resistance to achieve muscle length and strength. Not only do I exercise for health reasons but also to feel and look good ie.

banish the Mum tum! I know I will probably never have a completely flat stomach and I’m totally ok with that, (you know how much of a foodie I am), but my aim is to feel happy, healthy and confident. I like to set myself small, realistic goals, for example, Pilates once a week or feeling confident in a new dress for an upcoming event. This way they are more attainable - and I don’t feel as though I am putting too much pressure on myself. Another way to boost happiness is simply, seeing friends. Whether you have a select few or you are a social butterfly, I believe that (real) friends are good for the soul. Quality over quantity! For me, it gives a sense of purpose and belonging other than being a wife and mother. I don’t get to see all my friends often, but I believe with a good friend you can simply pick up where you left off and it feels like no time has passed at all. One Sunday my best friend and I took a road trip to see another dear friend of ours who has bought a new home in the idyllic Cotswolds countryside. After braving storm Eunice on the M40, (believe me that was NOT fun), we arrived at her stunning 200-year-old cottage. We were lucky enough to spend the day together catching up over sushi and wine at Soho Farmhouse where my friend is a member, which is the epitome of laid-back luxury. Being in beautiful surroundings is always wonderful, but being with friends is just so good for the soul, and certainly puts a spring in my step.

MARCH Tarot Reading

Let’s find out what MARCH will bring for you! Tarot and Crystals

Tarot and crystals work together perfectly. Each tarot card has a crystal designed to enhance its abilities. Crystals can be used to cleanse and bring positive energies into the space before a reading. During the reading, crystals will be used to cleanse the cards and to clarify the meaning behind them. This month’s cards tell us which crystals are best for us to use during March. The Hierophant’s associated crystal is Blue Topaz (which soothes, heals, and recharges its users), the Eight of Pentacles’ crystal is Amethyst (which is said to relieve stress and anxiety from your life), and Strength’s crystal is Aquamarine (which helps its users heal any negative emotions). Now, let’s get onto the reading.

The Hierophant

Your main card for this month’s reading is The Hierophant. This card is all about wisdom and belief. Trust that you know yourself well enough to get through any tough time and believe in what the universe has in store for you. It’s never too late to make a change. If you feel yourself conforming to what others want from you, The Hierophant asks you to figure out if you are willing to sacrifice your creativity in order to do this. Create your own traditions this month and embrace your uniqueness. Work on your identity and know that whoever you are is exactly who you need to be. We are all different, yet we are all the same.

Eight of Pentacles

The Eight of Pentacles indicates education and learning from someone who is a master of their skill. It is all about quality over quantity and being focused and engaged in what you are doing. If you know someone who happens to be doing a job that you aspire to do, get to know them and learn as much as you can. The Eight of Pentacles is also about learning from past mistakes and using your talents and experience to get you ahead in life. The Hierophant and the Eight of Pentacles together show that using your head and thinking intellectually is important this month.

Strength

Happy birthday to all the rams out there! It’s a high climbing year like no other. Your image, appearance, message, profile, title, style, brand is your superpower and your calling card now. The planets align to put you in the cosmic Face/Off machine and you emerge from it with the world looking at you very differently. You are in fact feeling different – new and freshly minted and chances are you will make some adjustments so that the outer you reflects those inner changes. This can be anything from simply changing up your ‘do’ to a complete Fab Five fabulization or extend right out to that Nip/Tuck or dentistry. However you choose to express who you are and how you are feeling – expect to attract in someone or something bolder and fiercer that aligns to that vibe you project. It’s your party now, Aries.

Who you know as opposed to what, continues to be your main focus. Or should be, Taurus. Does that social life need some love? And yes, the love of friends is just as important as the romantic kind. Don’t underestimate the effect your people power can have now so make that extra effort. No excuses. If things have felt restrictive lately, March propels you out of that rut. One particular desire or goal has been on your mind for a while now. And this month asks you what is stopping you from simply going for it? Chances are those you know may be able to help you attain this – even if it is just via their support or knowledge. But others could literally open doors for you to wish fulfilment. A wish is just a goal we have not yet taken that step towards making real. So, emerge from that boxset binge-worthy hermitage and get circulating, Taurus. People power your future – and your dreams.

Right now there’s no use in merely talking a good game. You just gotta bring it, Gemini. And if you don’t take yourself seriously – then who will? You have a once-in-a-lifetime spotlight on your career and status sector. It doesn’t matter if your work is paid or unpaid – you are in the spotlight now. Your cred is simply everything and you need to say what you mean, mean what you say and then deliver on that. So, simply don’t over promise and also weed out those people who don’t keep theirs in turn. You may find yourself dealing with people in positions of authority or influence. VIP’s, bosses, gatekeepers. It’s important to create your very best impression. There’s a game changer ahead if you do as one of them could hold a door open wide for you. Walk through it head high. The same applies to lovers. Know what you want, ask what they want in turn and take a no time wasters approach. Success follows.

Love is the alchemical reaction in your life this month Cancer. Expect a major shift around a duo, double act, duet or your relationship status. That frenemy, rival or opponent could also have a major role to play. There’s an ancient saying ‘Bless your enemy as s/he/ze is the agent of your transformation’. So, if you have been at loggerheads with anyone, expect a shift around the first week of the month. When we enter into any kind of double dynamic we are changed and so is the other party. And that’s what March is about for you. The transformative power of love one way or another. Freedom is also your goal now. Breaking out and upwards into something more soul sustaining. You know for that to happen a transmutation has to occur within first. How you see a key connection or yourself acts as the catalyst for this to occur. Then you are up, up and soaring away into a bigger love experience, Cancer.

All the stars are coming out tonight. They’re lighting up the sky tonight. For you. For you, Leo. The 5th and 6th hand you rule your own little world aspects, as ruler the Sun meets Jupiter in your sector of all out sexiness and fierce empowerment (5th), followed by Venus and Mars aligned in your long term love sector on the 6th. Later in March you get a rare ‘put a ring on it’ alignment occurring between Venus and Saturn. Knowing what you want is the key to getting it. Love and money are opposite sides of the same coin. And this month could just hand you both – in abundance. Whatever you do now, work that worth, Leo and don’t undersell yourself or what you have to offer. The universe wants to see what you do when you get access to the vault which contains your desires. Do you play with abundance and flow? Or feel there must be some mistake or that you don’t deserve it? Love or a partnership matter could get locked in for the long haul. Don’t just know what you want – believe in your deservedness.

Once in many lifetimes love factors and dreamy ‘It takes two, baby’ aspects light up your sector of marriage, long term love and dynamic duos. The new Moon on the 2nd opens a portal to a fresh take on love and relating. Singles could see the appearance of someone who may be new but feels oh-sofamiliar. Ensure no matter how deep this feels you take things slowly. Existing connections could deepen but remember, if something is broken beyond repair, you won’t be able to escape the truth of that now. Love is meant to lift us higher and if yours doesn’t - taking action on this will now become inevitable. This month bring a full Moon in your sign on the 18th. One particular past, present or potential partnership is illuminated by it. This is your focus and also potentially, your future, Virgo. Change is just around the corner now when it comes to love, relating and what you share and have shared. Your dynamic is truth and falling for the real deal. Not the fantasy so ensure that’s exactly what you give and get this March.

The 5th element you’ve been missing comes to light thanks to a key meeting between ruler Venus and Mars in your house of romance, creative self expression and children on the 6th. Look to who or what you attract now, Libra. This is so satisfying and completes you in some way. Bask in adoration, fun and pleasure. All this takes place against a big sky backdrop around your work (paid or unpaid), wellbeing, habits and routine. If breaking free of that rut, ditching that dead end job or simply creating habits is your goal, take that initiative from the 2nd onwards. You’ve access to a wealth of inspired ideas which support and free you at the same time. Good news around your day job or a solution to anything that has kept you stuck or stagnant could arrive from the 21st. Just in time as the energy shifts onto long term love from the 20th. Juice up to enjoy this to the full Libra.

Holding back on what needs to be said may prove impossible at the start of the month. All I can say is don’t keep those thoughts to yourself any longer, Scorpio. This cuts across those ideas to your true feelings. A conversation you have could turn into a game changer now. It’s not just about how far an idea can take you but also where flirtation can lead you too. March wants you to lighten up, radiate and be seen thanks to glamourising and total fabulisation of planets in your 5th of romance, good times and children. Just take extra precautions now if the patter of little feet isn’t part of your plan right now around the time of the new Moon. That being said, it’s time to shine and put yourself out there in ways you may have shied away from in the past. In fact, there’s nothing shy about the planets in here. Be seen, radiate and you will attract back in ways you never thought possible. You are the planetary influencer of the zodiac now and the weaver of love dreams. How you work that – is up to your own personal brand of magic, Scorpio.

Messages of love which boost your soul could come winging your way around the 6th, Sag. Meanwhile, ruler Jupiter says ‘There’s no place like home’. Click those heels together and repeat. Where in the world home is for you or whatever it looks like, March hands you a key to living large. Any decisions which add to your feeling of security and belonging can be made now and moves and real estate decisions may feature for many. Plant future sustaining seeds now. From the 20th onwards it’s time for enjoyment and pleasure. Holidays may feature for some of you with that favourite Sag pastime travel back on the schedule for many. Others could be offered a standout opportunity, lucky break or chance to shine. Time to dress or express yourself in a way that gets your noticed. To strut those talents and not to be shy about what makes you stand out. Chances are more than one person takes notice. Love could be the next big thing which takes you places, Sag.

Leaving others in no doubt about what you want or need from them sees you working that self-worth at the start of the month. Don’t however play the blame game. Keep it to ‘I feel’ and you could be looking at a stellar result at the start of March. It’s also your launch window and to discover just how far those ideas can take you. Speak up but also know that heaven always helps those who help themselves. So, don’t just talk that game – you need to bring it. What you initiate during the first week of the month could hand you results but the end of it. Expect news that may be simply too big to miss. But do read the fine print before signing anything. This includes signing your heart over to others as well, Capricorn. Do you share the same values for instance? Don’t be lured in by surface glitter and the other party’s ability to talk up their own game. Before giving your love away ensure they deserve to have it. As always, talk can be cheap but actions speak louder than words.

You know what you want. You also have the go-getting confidence to head directly for it this month, Aquarius. Venus and Mars in your sign act as the perfect catalysts of love and desire. Banishing hesitation and self-doubt and also bringing to the surface that latent passion and desire to take a chance. On love and above all – on yourself. Commitments can be made by the end of the month. Perhaps to someone or something or if not, to your stated goal, intention or purpose. Cash attracting aspects and avenues to self-worth are your highways to heaven now thanks to the once-inthis lifetime line up in your money zone. It’s time to see yourself as a conduit for abundance of all descriptions. Seeing your talents, skills and abilities as assets and resources. Same goes for the love in your life. Or the love that’s knock knock knocking and asking to be let in. Open up heaven’s door to prosperity and purpose this March.

New beginnings beckon you forward into a larger world of experience this month. The new Moon in your sign on the 2nd marks a game changer for you. This could be linked to someone you meet or know who can offer you entrée into this. Watch for invitations or what lights up that inbox. What this cycle wants you to understand above all is that the world is your oyster and you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to find a very rare pearl. This could be around love or an intensely personal desire or goal. If it expands your experience or leads you towards your truth, you need to go in that direction without hesitation now. Just be aware if the past comes calling this can sometimes be a trap. Ask yourself how you or the other party have changed or may see things differently this time around. You need the new, the game changing and unexplored. Not some rinse and repeat performance. The 18th should show you who factors into the new day that’s dawning. Or alternatively, who or what needs to be left behind.

Elmbridge resident Talia Dean is kicking off her solo show at The Court in Soho on 21st April. The much-anticipated show, delayed 2 years because of Covid, will see Talia (formerly of X Factor fame) take to the stage supported by session musicians singing her self-penned songs including ‘Nemesis’ and ‘The Devil I Know’ which made it to Number One in the iTunes Singles Chart.

TALIA DEAN WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING ON ‘X FACTOR’?

I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I had just had a baby and my boobs were leaking milk whilst I was standing in the audition queue for 9 hours! I was under no illusion I was going to get past this stage so when Simon Cowell said “that girls my favourite” it was the biggest boost.

WHAT WAS THE WORST PART?

I have to say the nerves and pressure were insane but every step of the show was a blessing.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN SONG WRITING?

How I’m feeling at the time and what really means something to me in that moment not just a generic song. I get inspiration from legends like Etta James, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin. I want to believe the words artists are singing. There really isn’t anyone on a par with these artists. Adele, Gaga and Kanye West could potentially become this good.

WORST HABITS?

Overthinking and terrible with my phone. Either losing it or spending too much time on it.

WHAT´S THE BEST THING ABOUT SURREY? The nature – love trees, foxes and grass!

WHAT WAS IT LIKE PERFORMING IN THE LIVE SHOWS?

There is an ever-increasing pressure to keep up with the pop industry especially if you don’t have a major label behind you. I am really into classic, vintage soul and blues music. Just really into what makes music great, which sometimes isn’t what makes it in todays ‘pop’ industry.

WHAT ARE FEARS?

YOUR

GREATEST

Not being free and the business side of the music industry changing the way you perform. As an unsigned artist I often wonder if I would change if I got a record deal? I never want to lose creative freedom of my music and expressing myself.

124 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 07

My hold-me-in Bridget Jones pants! But not really embarrassed about it – I couldn’t give a s**t!

Always a singer.

Yes I did get recognised more, but more so after the audition went viral on the internet. The Saturday night show only peaked at 4 million viewers on ITV while my audition was watched over 100 million times on You Tube.

WHAT ARE PITFALLS OF BEING A RECORDING ARTIST?

MOST EMBARRASSING ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE?

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP?

DID YOU GET STOPPED IN THE STREET WHEN THE SHOW AIRED?

Suddenly I was a product – big hair, OTT make-up and false lashes were really not me. I was a pop star in the making but I felt like a drag contestant on Ru Paul!

it’s her fault I am the way I am! Everything I have in life I have worked really hard for. I lived in a youth hostel as a teenager with nothing so to come to where I am shows that Nan had pearls of wisdom!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A PARTNER? A good soul and a good spirit.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? My son, my guitar and a boat.

WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE? Angelina Jolie.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS? Amy Winehouse, Brian May and Rik Mayall. Plus, Leonardo Dicaprio for eye candy.

BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN?

From my nan, “the world’s your oyster” –

I want people to come to my shows, I am a much better live performer. I am real, raw and grounded. I want people to relate me as a single mum and not into the whole fame/Instagram culture.
