It’s unclear what differences drove the actors to part ways as no further details were given. Last October the couple got engaged and Zoë, 35, and Channing, 44, were both open about their relationship in the 2024 promotion for ‘Blink Twice’ which debuted in August this year.

Zoë told People that they were keen to collaborate again, saying “I hope so. I mean, I think that art is our love language. I think it’s what we love, and we love talking about it, and experiencing it, and supporting each other.”

INFLUENCERS DROWN IN PURSUIT OF PERFECT SELFIE

Two social media influencers drowned after they refused to wear life jackets on a speedboat that sank off the Brazilian coast.

Sadly, 37-year-old Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim and 27-year-old Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria ignored pleas to wear the life-saving equipment because they didn't want to ruin their tan in photos.

Tragedy then struck after the already overcrowded boat was sunk by a wave on a stretch of coast known as the Devil's Throat off the coast of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

"Some didn't want to put life jackets on because they were taking selfies," Sao Vincente Police Commissioner Marcos Alexandra Alfino said, based on testimony by the boat's captain. "They said that they get in the way of their tanning," Mr Alfino added. The captain of the boat, 1 of 5 survivors, said that the 2 victims boarded the speedboat to shore with 4 other influencers after partying on a luxury yacht with friends. The captain said he was ordered to take the 6 influencers to the shore despite his boat having a maximum capacity of 5 passengers. Investigations into the incident are continuing.

“It allows us to prescribe treatments based on client’s scan results which will highlight their specific skin concerns,” Renata says. “3D Visage utilises an 18 million pixel camera in order to provide the most accurate results in the industry. We take 3 images at 3 set angles which are then stitched together to create a 3D visual of the face. The high-grade camera quality not only allows us to view surface indications but shows areas of porphyrins, bacteria in the pores, at a microscopic level which also allow us to prescribe preventative treatments before the bacteria causes spots on the skin’s surface.”

NEWS FOR HER WHAT'S TRENDING...

SALMON SPERM FACIAL

You thought you’d heard it all, until now…… “Salmon sperm injected into your face to reduce fine lines and wrinkles?”

It’s not a joke, it’s the new cuttingedge facial, favoured by celebrities including Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian. And the science behind polynucleotide treatments (the buzz word in the beauty industry) actually strangely and morbidly makes sense.

The injection, derived from the DNA of salmon (albeit sperm!) – is known to be a very regenerative product known for its health benefits. Yes, we all know eating fish is good but according to leading doctors, the consumption of this DNA in its most potent form (cough, sperm!) if injected directly to an are like the under-eye or cheeks can plump up the skin naturally by activating fibroplasts, the stretchy area of skin that helps maintain the structure of the tissue.

Polynucleotides - the new concept in regenerative medicine - is also said to promote cell turnover, improve elasticity, hydration, photoaging and acne scarring, giving a more nourished, healthy and revitalised complexion.

It regenerates the area in much the same way as Botox or Collagen, apparently. It sounds insane (who is getting this sperm out, we ask?!!) but celebs are

LEMON BOTTLE INJECTIONS

Fat dissolving injections are effective for many people seeking to reduce stubborn fat deposits. These injections use active ingredients to break down fat cells in targeted areas. The body then naturally metabolises and eliminates these cells, resulting in a slimmer, more contoured appearance. Clinical studies and patient experiences have demonstrated significant improvements, particularly in areas such as the chin, abdomen, and thighs.

RECIPE

THYME CRUSTED RACK OF LAMB

Try something a little bit different for date night with this delicious Jamie Oliver rack of lamb and grilled panzanella recipe. With a sprinkling of thyme salt, this is juicy, gnarly and date-night deliciousness.

INGREDIENTS

(Serves 2)

LAMB

• 1 x 8-bone higher-welfare rack of lamb, French trimmed

• ½ a bunch of fresh thyme (10g)

• 1 tablespoon sea salt

• olive oil

PANZANELLA

• 1 red onion

• 1 red capsicum

• 1 yellow capsicum

• 2 slices good-quality leftover sourdough

• 500g large mixed-colour ripe tomatoes

• red wine vinegar

• extra virgin olive oil

• 1 small clove of garlic

• 2 teaspoons baby capers

• ½ a bunch of fresh basil (15g)

METHOD:

(Takes 1 hour 10 minutes)

1. Remove the lamb from the fridge and bring to room temperature half an hour before cooking.

2. Ignite the barbecue burner or oven, set it to high, and leave with the lid closed to preheat for 10 to 15 minutes.

3. Once the barbecue/oven is at temperature, peel the onion, cut into 6 wedges and place on the grill along with the whole capsicums. Allow them to blister and blacken all over for 5 to 10 minutes, turning regularly. Add the bread and cook for the final 2 to 3 minutes, until lightly toasted, flipping halfway. Remove everything from the heat, placing the capsicums in a bowl. Cover and leave to steam for 20 minutes – this will make it easy to remove the skins.

4. Grate 1 of the tomatoes onto a serving platter, add 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar and 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Peel and grate over the garlic and add the capers.

5. Add the onion straight into the dressing, breaking the wedges apart. Season to perfection with sea salt and black pepper.

6. Tear the toasted bread into rustic bite-sized pieces and add to the dressing. Use your hands to toss and mix everything together until the bread has soaked up all the lovely tomato dressing.

7. Chop the remaining tomatoes into 2cm chunks and add to the party. Once the peppers have cooled, remove as much black skin as possible, as well as the stalk and seeds, then tear into rustic slices and add to the serving platter. Tear over the basil and toss it all together with your hands.

8. Make sure the thyme is completely dry, then strip the leaves into a pestle and mortar, add a large pinch of the salt and a small pinch of black pepper and bash up to make a green paste. Slowly bash in the rest of the salt. We will only use some of the thyme salt today, but the rest will keep for a

few months in an airtight jar.

9. Turn the heat to medium-low (about 180°C). Drizzle the lamb with a little olive oil and season with a large pinch of the thyme salt, patting it all over the meat. Place on the grill, fatside down, and cook with the lid up for 5 minutes, or until golden brown, turning halfway through.

10. Turn the heat up to mediumhigh (about 200°C). Move the lamb to a trivet and convection tray, rib-side down, place on the grill and continue to cook for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 54°C, turning occasionally. Remove and leave to rest for 5 minutes.

11. Slice the lamb into cutlets and transfer to a serving board. Sprinkle over a little more thyme salt and serve alongside the panzanella.

WINE MATCH

When it comes to thinking about what wine goes with lamb there is one golden rule to follow… always pick red! White wine can rarely do justice to the rich and delicious flavours of lamb, so a red wine should be your choice pairing with this Jamie Oliver lamb dish.

Almost all red wines will enhance the flavours of a beautiful lamb dish, but some go with certain dishes more than others. Lamb has a natural affinity with two grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon (a good Bordeaux will work here) and Tempranillo. A Spanish oak-aged Rioja also goes particularly well. If you prefer a more delectable, perfumed wine modern labels from New Zealand or Chile are fantastic but are a little on the pricey side.

MOVIE REVIEW ALBUM REVIEW BOOK REVIEW

GLADIATOR 2

It’s been a long time coming - 24 years to be exact - but finally this November, the epic historical drama ‘Gladiator’ is making its much anticipated comeback.

The legendary Ridley Scott is back as director, David Franzoni will produce and actors Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi and Djimon Hounsou are reprising their original roles as Lucilla, Juba and Gracchus respectively.

The plot centres around Lucius Verus, Lucilla’s son from the original film and nephew of Commodore, who has been living away from Rome in the wilderness for 15 years. The ruthless Praetorian Guards are now ruling and Lucius - played by ‘Normal People’ star and BAFTA winner Paul Mescal - comes out of hiding to find his mother and find out who his father is whilst inadvertently saving Rome from downfall.

Noteably, Russell Crowe has been dropped from the original cast list as Maximus, although not surprisingly as he was killed back in the 2000 original film! There was talk back in 2006 of Crowe reprising the role with a fantasy element being brought back to life from none other than Nick Cave – but it was dropped by the studio.

New big hitters in ‘Gladiator 2’ include two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington who stars as a former slave turned wealthy arms dealer with a grudge against the emperors. ‘Narcos’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ star Chilean born Pedro Pascal is also in the sequel as is Brit actor and comedian Matt Lucas from ‘Little Britain’ fame.

The script comes from the talented David Scarpa who was behind hit movies including ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ and ‘Napolean.’

‘Gladiator 2’ will be hitting the big screen this month with a November 22nd release date. This is definitely one of those blockbuster movies that will be epic to see on the big screen.

PRIMAL SCREAM – COME AHEAD

It’s been a long break for Primal Scream - 8 years to be exact - before releasing their highly anticipated 12th studio album called ‘Come Ahead’.

This album is already attracting huge media attention and rave reviews. It is being released via label BMG on 8th November.

The first track from the album ‘Ready To Go Home’ was released on September 25th this year to huge fanfare…amid Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie’s heartfelt tribute to his Dad.

Bobby reveals candidly that he sang the lyrics of his emotive new song ‘Ready To Go Home’, to his father, Robert Gillespie Senior, on his deathbed, literally the night before he passed away.

“It’s a joyous acceptance of death. It’s dark, but it’s also up, full of humour. It was just me and him in the hospital. His body had given up. I think, when you get old and tired and your body just goes, ‘I’ve had enough. Time to go.’ I was trying to write about that feeling, I don’t know why – maybe I was feeling tired myself. Sometimes I do. When I wrote this song I was thinking, there must be a point in your life where you think, time to go home.”

According to reports, the entire LP began with the lyrics, and marked the first time in a long while where the words came ahead of the music.

“The story came first. Bobby wrote alone, using an acoustic guitar. Ideas flowed fast, in long bursts of inspiration apparently,” a press release from BMG reveals.

This process, in tandem with encouragement from producer David Holmes, provided a new way in. Working with Holmes and Primal Scream guitarist Andrew Innes, the ‘Come Ahead’ Album Sessions were completed between Belfast, London and Los Angeles.”

HEIST ROYALE –KAYVION LEWIS

The high-stakes sequel to the best-selling ‘Thieves' Gambit’, for fans of Jennifer Lynn Barnes and Ally Carter.

The story of ‘Heist Royale’ carries on from the original and it’s a belter! It's been six months since the end of “The Gambit.” Instead of winning an impossible wish, Ross has the threat of her family’s execution hanging over her head. Devroe, the only person Ross thought she could trust, could wish the Quests into oblivion at any time. Shockingly, despite his betrayal, Devroe is still making a play for Ross’s heart as the two work together pulling jobs for the Organisation. But Ross has learned her lesson: A Quest can only trust another Quest.

When Ross finds herself at the centre of a power struggle within the Organization, she sees her chance to change her fortunes. As a new deadly Gambit develops for control of the criminal underworld, Ross strikes a risky deal to guarantee protection for herself and her family.

In this final clash, Ross will square off against a ruthless opponent who will stop at nothing to seize power, and in their corner will be not only Devroe but his mother, who wants to destroy the Quests at any cost.

The new Gambit takes Ross and her crew into the intoxicating casinos of Monte Carlo and across treacherous snow-covered slopes in Antarctica as Ross competes against Devroe in a fight for her life.

Loyalties will be tested, backs stabbed, hearts broken. May the best thief win.

A must read that both men and women of any age will love! Out in all UK cinemas on November 12th.

HARE & BONE - A DECADE OF STYLE

Surrey Rocks had the pleasure of catching up with creative director and founder of Hare & Bone, Sam Burnett, for this exclusive interview as the award-winning salon reaches its 10 Year Anniversary.

FEATURES

As we reflect on the past decade, it’s hard to believe that Hare & Bone has reached this milestone. What started as a vision for a creative, aspirational, fashion-forward salon in the heart of London has now expanded to include our second home in Esher - and next month we celebrate 10 years of style, creativity and community.

When I first opened Hare & Bone, my mission was to create a space that brought together exceptional craftsmanship, artistry, and innovation in hairdressing. Over the years, that mission has only grown stronger. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with some of the most talented stylists in the industry, collaborate with leading fashion houses, and welcome a diverse and loyal clientele who have become part of our family.

The theme for our anniversary celebration, “A Decade of Style,” reflects the heart of what we do. It’s about more than just great haircuts or colour - it’s about pushing boundaries, setting trends, and crafting looks that are as individual as the people who wear them. For us, style isn’t just about following trends, but creating them in a way that empowers our clients to express their authentic selves.

One of my proudest moments is seeing the impact we’ve had on our clients, both in London and Esher. Whether it’s through personalised consultations or the genuine relationships we’ve built, it’s those small, everyday moments that define Hare & Bone.

Our team’s dedication, passion, and creativity have made the past 10 years truly special.

We’ve also had the privilege of being part of the wider fashion and beauty conversation, working backstage at international fashion shows, collaborating with editorial teams, and leading ontrend looks that continue to shape the future of hair. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re excited about what’s next.

And as we move into the next chapter, we’re not slowing down. Our commitment to innovation, education, and sustainability remains at the core of everything we do. Our team will continue to evolve, working with the latest techniques and technologies, and sharing that knowledge with the next generation of stylists, and you, our clients.

We’re also deeply invested in giving back to the community that has supported us for the last decade. Through our partnerships with local charities and sustainability initiatives, we aim to make a positive difference beyond just great hair.

None of this would be possible without the loyal support of our clients and team. To everyone who has been a part of the journey, whether you’ve been with us from day one or just discovered us recently, we thank you. We’re honoured to celebrate this milestone with you and look forward to many more years of creativity and connection.

International Men’s Day (IMD) is on 19th November every year and is marked across the UK and the world. The objectives - or Six Pillars as they are known - of International Men's Day are:

• To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men but everyday, workingclass men who are living decent, honest lives.

• To celebrate men's positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, childcare and the environment.

• To focus on men's health and well-being including social, emotional, physical, and spiritual.

• To highlight discrimination against men in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations and law.

• To improve gender relations and promote gender equality.

• To create a safer, better world, where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.

Every year, International Men’s Day in the UK is marked by more and more women, men and organisations across the country. There were 200 organisations involved in 2018, 2019 and 2020’s events. This rose to 400 organisations in 2021 and 800 in 2023. This year it is expected to top 1,100 – needless to say it’s growing exponentially. Last year there were over 100,000 tweets on IMD and it was the hottest trend for hours.

As well as the aforementioned Six Pillars there is a secondary theme for each annual IMD suggested by world co-ordinators of the day, such as ‘Peace’ in 2002, ‘Men's Health’ in 2003 and ‘Healing and Forgiveness’ in 2007.

The theme for 2024 is ‘Positive Male Role Models’ and we thought we would embrace the theme and catch up with 10 Inspiring Surrey Men for IMD to bring you this feature.

CHRIS WALLER FOUNDER, WE POWER ON

We Power On is a local walking group for Men's mental health and fitness set up by Chris Waller in 2022 as a result of his own struggles with mental health.

I started the Men's Sunday Social Walk and Talk in September 2022 as a result of my own struggles and mental health decline. The first few weeks I would walk alone until one by one new members joined. WPO is now a thriving little support network. Blokes meet for a walk and talk every Sunday come rain or shine to get troubles off their chest.

Getting out for a walk can help your mental health, it can help reduce anxiety, depression, and a negative mood. It can also boost self-esteem and reduce symptoms of social withdrawal. Talking about your struggles can put you on the path to healing and recovery - It's not easy to talk but once you do you will feel a weight lifted. The group is a space where men feel comfortable enough to want to express their feelings and talk. People connect and share without fear or judgement.

Over the past year 'We Power On' walk + talk has become a thriving little community that continues to grow.

What challenges have you faced and overcome?

One of the toughest challenges I’ve faced was a severe decline in my mental health which almost led to me taking my own life. Hitting my lowest of lows pushed me to seek help through my GP who referred me for CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). After the CBT ended I was on my own to work how to turn my life around. As part of my recovery, I found going for regular walks across Epsom Downs helped to clear my mind and keep me motivated to move. When I realised there wasn’t much in the way of mental health support for men in my local

area, I decided to put up some leaflets to invite other blokes struggling to come along for a walk. As time went on I was joined by other blokes wanting to address their mental wellbeing and so ‘We Power On’ was born - a space for blokes to walk, talk and get things off their chest. I managed to turn my personal challenges into an opportunity to help others and find purpose.

What does being a positive male role model mean to you?

A positive male role model is a decent bloke who does what he needs to stay balanced, while lifting others up along the way. It’s about being honest, facing challenges head-on, and showing up, even when it's tough. It’s about building resilience and powering on through the struggle. It’s having the courage to show vulnerability as a strength and not a weakness. Above all, it's about treating others with kindness and respect.

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your lives and why?

The men who have had the biggest influence on my life are the blokes who show up for the walk every Sunday. These guys are facing their own challenges - whether it's battling suicidal thoughts, anxiety, divorce, grief, or complicated home situations. Yet, despite all that, they still turn up every week, not just for themselves, but for each other. Their resilience and commitment to supporting one another is inspiring. I’ve learned a lot from each of them. They’ve shown me the power of connection, community, and camaraderie which has given me a new perspective on my own life.

What advice would you give other boys/men who may be going through a difficult time?

Don’t suffer in silence. I did that for years, and it nearly broke me. It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling, and it’s okay to ask for help. Bottling it up only up can make things worse and can leave you feeling isolated. Reaching out - whether to a friend, family, or a professional is the first step toward getting the support you need. Don’t get bogged down by stereotypes or how you think men should act. We need to break the stigma and talk openly about what we’re going through. Us humans are not meant to struggle alone - there is a lot of power in connection, community and surrounding ourselves with supportive people.

What is the secret to your success?

For me, success is about being in a much more mentally stable place than I was a few years ago. A positive mindset and resilience have been key in helping me rebuild my life. Now, instead of feeling overwhelmed by challenges, I see them as opportunities to learn and grow. Consistency and commitment have helped me reach personal goals, but the real gamechanger has been surrounding myself with supportive people. That’s what has added the most value to my life and contributed to the success of 'We Power On' - having a strong community by my side.

IAN MCCULLOCH FOUNDER, SILENT POOL GIN

Surrey-born Silent Pool Gin

Founder, Ian McCulloch, built an illustrious career in TV, in particular at ITV where he spent 25 years bringing the brand to huge commercial success. In 2013, after he left the channel, he decided to start his own business and after seeing a gap in the market for new gins, he started the Silent Pool Gin brand. And the rest is history! Silent Pool is one of the most sought after, successful gin brands in the world. Visitors can visit Silent Pool in Albury and see the gin being made, taking in the aromatic smells that waft in from the distilling process. This year the brand celebrate their 10 Year Anniversary and are introducing a limited-edition Silent Pool Gin. Be sure to check it out.

With a background in TV - what made you come up with the idea of opening a distillery?

I came out of ITV and wanted to do something that was local, that was hearts driven - not heads driven. I didn’t want to make nuts and bolts or something practical, I wanted to make something you engage with your heart like you do with drama on TV. Gin is very versatile - you can do all kinds of things with it - it’s not like whisky. We talk about painting with flavours and that’s what you can do with gin. It was a natural choice and we have been very lucky on the project that there was a boom in the market for creativity in spirits.

How did you find the home for the Silent Pool Distillery?

The original property brief we were after were log cabins, stone chimney stacks, around a lake or river. I was thinking Coldharbour or Leith Hill. I rang a lady at the Area of Natural beauty (AONB) and met her to discuss

locations. At that split second the guy that was walking behind us, stopped us and said you need to talk to Michael Baxter, who runs the Duke of Northumberland’s Estate. I then met Michael, saw the Albury estate that had sheeps, cows and tractors in it –it looked like Bocketts Farm – nothing like it does today! The lease was coming up for grabs in 2 week’s time after being taken for 25 years and I signed there and then.

For any aspiring entrepreneurs reading this, what’s the best advice you can give on starting your own business?

Being patient and also being relentlessly impatient! You’ve got to try and be measured. Just keep going, just

keep pushing. You have to be dogged and you can’t ever give in. There are times you think you have paddled yourself up blind creeks, and you need to backtrack and take another route upstream, then you need to do that.

If you could transport yourself back to your younger self what would you tell yourself to do differently (if anything!?)

Trust your gut. I really thought I was going into the RAF after seeing the Sunday Times Magazine ads with an upside-down plane as a kid. I could have done that but my gut told me not to. Your gut always guides you – listen to it. I was at ITV for 25 years from 1980 to 2005 and it was the best job. I probably wouldn’t change anything.

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your life and why?

My old bosses at ITV were amazing. They taught me to be relentless, be ambitious, push hard.

What do you do to stay mentally healthy?

Self-start. Get out there, put your boots on, go for a walk, do sport and activities …..sometimes the stuff that has come through on mental health recently can feel a bit selfabsorbed. You need to drive yourself. Get out, stay active and you will feel so much better.

JOHN PARKER FOUNDER, JOHN’S RED BUS

When Russia's illegal full scale invasion of Ukraine occurred John was deeply affected and compelled to help. His grandfather was a WWIl orphan at the age of 9. He lost both his parents, his father died fighting against the Red Army and his mother of starvation. He was rescued by a charity organisation and sent to a child refugee camp in Kenya. When the war finished he was placed in UK with a sponsor and started his life again.

Since February 2022 John has been fundraising for humanitarian missions to help refugees and animals suffering in this tragic war. His organisation supplies various humanitarian aid to the civilians and defenders of Ukraine. In March 2022 he purchased a red minibus, from which came the name John's Red Bus! To this day John and his team of volunteers have carried out 27 missions to Ukraine supplying over 200 tonnes of aid. Over 50 refugees and animals have been rescued and transported throughout the EU and UK. 57 vehicles supplied, including 4x4 pickups, ambulances and minibuses. They also organise fundraising, awareness raising and morale boosting events in UK and Ukraine. John’s organisation relies on donations to keep going. They have many more future projects planned, but finances are limited. More donations they receive, the more they can do!

What challenges have you faced and overcome?

Starting my humanitarian organisation John's Red Bus with no previous experience of any volunteering. All done whilst still running my car dealership with a team of employees. Making tough decisions to prioritise my humanitarian organisation over commercial and material success, which eventually led to the liquidation of my company. Driving countless hours and miles to Ukraine, with 27 humanitarian missions undertaken to this day.

Planning each mission on my own, delegating tasks for all my volunteers, physically loading and unloading countless amounts of humanitarian aid. Choosing to visit dangerous frontline locations of the war to deliver desperately needed vehicles, generators and aid. Sometimes even driving solo across Europe and throughout Ukraine. Braving Ukrainian weather, from waist high snow in -20c temperatures, to +40c summers with no A/C! Filing for personal bankruptcy, but still remaining determined and committed to help the people suffering in the war. After all the aforementioned, I still battle forward and succeed! My biggest challenge though has been the battle I’ve faced with myself and my bipolar disorder. The workload, stress and drastic changes of environments with my humanitarian missions have really been the toughest of tests. But I preserved, rolled up my sleeves and put a smile on! 2.5 years later with 27 missions completed is something I'm proud of and want to inspire others with.

What does being a positive male role model mean to you?

It means setting an example, not only for fellow males, but for everyone, women and children. Integrity is a foundation of that, being a completely trustworthy person with honesty and transparency.

Being someone people can depend on, sticking to your word and promises. Leading by example, to inspire others to follow their dreams. Overcoming adversity and coming out of your comfort zone. Going ahead with decisions and scenarios that scare you! When opportunities arise don't turn away! Become comfortable being uncomfortable!

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your life and why?

Unfortunately, I lost my father and grandfather at an early age, so unfortunately had no male influence from my family. Life has taught me to be strong, I do find inspiration from certain famous people though. For example, Denzel Washington is very influential to me. He speaks very wise and inspiring words. He is also a great philanthropist and Christian. Another influential person is Steve Harvey. I have watched many of his videos online. He promotes the following of dreams, embracing challenges and the belief in God. During my missions to Ukraine I have visited and held morale boosting events at many churches, of various religions. I have even become friends with some of the priests I have met. These are also men who have inspired me. They have made me become a better person by enhancing my beliefs, faith and Christianity. A few months ago I had confession for the first time in the 40 years I've been on this earth! It was a very cleansing experience.

What 3 things do you do to stay mentally healthy?

Number 3 is spending time with my Staffie dog Rocco. Whether it's going for his twice a day walkies, driving to Ukraine together, UK trips away or just chilling on the sofa. Rocco brings happiness and joy into my life, no matter what the situation may be!

What advice would you give other boys/men who may be going through a difficult time?

Reading this article so far offers a lot of insight into how I face challenges and overcome them. Another stage in my life of overcoming a big challenge is ‘opening up’. Men find it especially difficult to actually open up and talk about their problems, as they think it can be perceived as a weakness. I also thought like that and didn't talk to people about my challenges and mental health issues. For fear of being judged, misinterpreted and losing respect. I now think differently, coming to terms with your problems and talking to people is a great strength. We are all humans at the end of the day and have suffered various difficulties in our lives. Whether it be financial struggles, mental health, bullying, physical or psychological abuse, homophobia, racial or xenophobic abuse, etc. It's good to talk!

Mental health and wellbeing is paramount to me. As someone who has a mental health condition it's important to lead as healthy lifestyle as possible.

Number 1 is a healthy diet. I find sticking to a healthy diet (eating 4-5 times a day with controlled calorie intake) helps me lead a healthier lifestyle, which goes hand in hand with my next point.

Number 2 is weight training at the gym. This is the most important for me as it helps me to battle my mental health struggles most effectively. It's the best antidepressant! Gym, whether it be weight training or cardio (or whatever physical activity appeals to someone the most) not only helps you keep in good shape but also makes your brain produce positive chemicals such as endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin.

What is the secret to your success?

The definition of ‘success’ can vary between people. Typically success is defined by your possessions, bank balance and job position. My definition of success has drastically changed during the last 2.5 years, when I founded my humanitarian organisation John's Red Bus I used to be a workaholic, something I was very proud of. I built a very profitable car business and enjoyed a luxurious life. But I came to realise many of the people in my life were only present because of that money and type of lifestyle.

As I started trips to war torn Ukraine delivering humanitarian aid I saw how that luxury life I thought was important really isn't. Subsequently those people disappeared from my life as they simply didn't understand or embrace my new path in life. I’ve achieved financial and career ‘success' previously, but I am much happier with the success I am achieving now.

Transforming people's lives, positively influencing others and making the world a better place, is far more rewarding than chasing the type of ‘success' that I associate with excessive materialism.

What challenges have you faced and overcome?

I've faced significant challenges with anxiety, stage fright and imposter syndrome. Each of these has been a battle in its own right, requiring consistent effort and resilience. Overcoming these obstacles has involved a combination of self-awareness, ongoing personal development, and a willingness to step outside my comfort zone. I've learned that confronting these fears directly, rather than avoiding them, has been crucial to my growth both personally and professionally.

What does being a positive male role model mean to you?

For me, being a positive male role model means embodying a standard of integrity and respect. It's about setting an example for others by valuing oneself and those around you. This involves showing strength through vulnerability, demonstrating empathy, and leading with a sense of purpose. It's not just about success in the traditional sense but about inspiring others to strive for their best while also embracing their challenges.

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your life and why?

David Lopez, the owner of DLO Hairdressing, has had a profound impact on my career and life. He introduced me to the industry and set high standards for me to aspire to. David remains an inspiration to this day my sensei providing guidance and inspiration that continually shapes my approach to the craft and my outlook on life. His example has shown me the importance of dedication and the pursuit of excellence.

What 3 things do you do to stay mentally healthy?

Maintaining mental health is an active and ongoing process for me. I prioritize regular, open discussions with other barbers in my industry, which create a space for shared experiences and mutual support. Meditation is another key practice; it helps me stay grounded and cultivates mindfulness in my daily life. Additionally, I incorporate cold showers into my routine, as they not only help in physical recovery but also build mental resilience by challenging my comfort levels.

What advice would you give to other boys/ men who may be going through a difficult time?

I would encourage them to focus on the present moment and not be overwhelmed by past regrets or future uncertainties. Hard times are temporary, and you always have the power to make positive changes. It's essential to acknowledge the difficulties without letting them define you. Take small steps, reach out for support when needed, and remember that each day brings a new opportunity for growth and healing.

What is the secret to your success?

The foundation of my success lies in consistency and the effort to continually build relationships. I make it a point to connect weekly with others, whether that involves networking within the hairdressing community or collaborating with local businesses. This commitment to steady progress and expanding my circle of influence has been instrumental in creating sustainable growth.

What is the secret to your success as an entrepreneur?

My biggest strengths have been trusting my intuition, being adaptable, and being willing to evolve and building a strong team around me. I am honest about my strengths and limitations, I’m an ideas guy, I love getting projects and initiatives conceptualised and started then passing them over to people who can maintain and grow them. My success has always been driven by my passion for quality and eye for detail, I put my heart into everything I do and focus on the best outcome for everyone involved. I aim to empower the people around me to grow and take ownership of the projects they are involved in and the business as a whole.

What advice would you give to boys/men just starting out in business?

I’m not big on dishing out advice, I prefer to share my relevant experience, so I will say this.

Do your research, get to know your industry inside out, I worked my way from the ground up, and I know the ins and outs of every job role in my business as I have done them all.

Have a strong vision and believe in it, while remaining open to suggestions and advice from successful people you admire who have already walked the path you are on. Better yet, ask them to mentor you; their experience could be invaluable to your growth and success.

Begin anywhere. You don’t need to have it all figured out, if you know your objectives and have a clear vision just get started, the rest will unfold as you go.

What challenges have you faced and overcome?

On a personal level I have struggled with my mental health since I was a child with periods of depression and anxiety. I was undiagnosed with ADHD and Autism until 2022, and although I have a high IQ, I found school and life challenging. This ultimately fed my desire to make something of myself, I channeled that energy into a solid work ethic.

Leaving school at 16 with below-average GCSE’s and no business qualification could be perceived as a challenge but ultimately it led me to an apprenticeship, on-the-job training and industry connections that have been invaluable. As a business, we have navigated, recessions, Covid, Brexit, the cost-of-living crisis, and much more.

What does being a positive male role model mean to you?

To be considered a positive male role model isn’t something I had considered related to me, so I find it mind-blowing. It means a lot to me; I feel incredibly grateful, especially being a gay man from humble beginnings. If my story can inspire others to take a leap of faith and believe in themselves then that alone makes me feel successful.

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your lives and why?

I had a teacher at High School called Mr. Gardner who influenced my life, he believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. He took time out to encourage me to aim high, he inspired me to take chances in life and to follow my passions. My Stepfather and business partner Tim has also been a big influence. He encouraged me to change direction and leave the A Levels I was pursuing as my heart wasn’t in them, to follow my dream of becoming a hairdresser. This was a life-changing moment that has led to an exciting, successful and fulfilling career.

What 3 things do you do to stay mentally healthy?

1. I have defined and healthy boundaries in my work and personal lives.

2. I have a daily ongoing Spiritual practice that consists of contemplation, meditation, gratitude,

positive affirmations, grounding in and connecting with nature.

3. I look after my mental and physical health with regular exercise, daily reading of self-development books and therapy.

What advice would you give other men who may be going through a difficult time?

Firstly, it's ok to be having a difficult time, we all face challenges, it's completely normal and a healthy part of being human. All feelings and emotions are relevant, the sooner we can accept them, welcome them, feel them and let them go the sooner we can heal and grow. Please don’t suffer in silence, take action, reach out and share how you are feeling with someone, or journal on it, these actions alone are empowering and invite connection and solutions.

JACK FORREST-FOSTER OWNER, KINGHAMS RESTAURANT

Jack was only 34 when he took over Kinghams Restaurant in Shere, one of the most respected fine dining restaurants in Surrey. He worked for Paul, the previous owner, for 7 years prior to taking over the restaurant in 2019. He admits it was a big undertaking financially and commercially at such a young age which is another reason why he made our ‘Top 10 Inspiring Surrey Men’. Jack is married and has young two children and does regular childcare and school pick-ups as part of his busy routine also running Kinghams.

Jack was also only 39 years old when Kinghams picked up the ’Best Fine Dining Award’ at the Surrey Awards 2024 (as pictured here) with head chef Moz in May.

Jack turns 40 on November 22nd this month so from all of us here at Surrey Rocks, happy 40th birthday to you!

What advice would you give to boys/men just starting out in business?

You’ve just got to jump in head first, believe in yourself. Just being confident in what you do and building a good team around yourself. A good team help you, it’s very infrequent you can do everything yourself so if you can build that team, you are one step ahead already.

What challenges have you faced and overcome in your life?

For us, we started in October 2019 and then Covid kicked in a few months later, so that was a real challenge but it was a good learning curve. We learnt a lot about ourselves. That was quite something to overcome and everything else seems a lot easier now since then!

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your life and why?

I’m sure a lot of people say this, but definitely my Father. My Dad was very old fashioned, he was always up first thing in the morning worked all day and came back in the evening. He’s always been that sort of character. I learnt from him that way. We have a few regular customers that come here to Kinghams that I took guidance from when I was buying the restaurant, so they have helped and inspired me. Although number 1 would be Dad.

How do you juggle your busy family and work life?

I have a very understanding wife! She used to work in hospitality so she understands how that

works. If I worked a 9-5 I wouldn’t be able to do a school run as it interferes with both sides. As it is I can do the morning run and afternoon pick up as I don’t have to start work till 10am sometimes and then I am available to do after school pick-ups as we close after lunch and don’t reopen till later so business hours allow it. Bath time and bedtime is more down to the wife though so I commend her for that!

What 3 things do you do to stay mentally healthy?

I try to spend a lot of time outside, even if it’s something as simple as gardening or just being outside…fresh air is huge. I Also enjoy running, I find it a fantastic was to hit a reset button after a stressful day. The work life balance is important too and trying to manage that is key. And even just spending time with the kids, it’s a very different stress with a young family, but it’s away from work, so you totally switch off from work. The occasional holiday wouldn’t go amiss either!

What is the secret to your success as an entrepreneur? Enjoy what you do. In the hospitality industry it’s a lifestyle not a job so if you don’t enjoy what you do and if you don’t love it, it’s just never going to work.

REECE MARTIN MENTAL HEALTH SURVIVOR

Reece Martin, aged 32, has had an amazing life so far and one that is worthy of sharing to help inspire others on International Men’s Day. Reece has overcome trauma, multiple mental health conditions, bullying and illness. Aged only 7, Reece sadly had to witness his Dad die of a heroin overdose. Despite his traumatic childhood, coming out as being gay and being diagnosed with ADHD, Psoriasis and Tourette’s Syndrome, he has never asked for pity, if anything his experiences, have propelled him to work harder and build a better life for himself.

Reece went on to study Performing Arts, has an NVQ in Sales & Marketing and currently works for Surrey Rocks Magazine. (He also interviewed Bradley from S Club 7 in this month’s 60 Second Interview – thanks Reece!)

“Everyone deals with things in different ways,” he admits, ”and I have channelled my traumatic experiences into making my life full and complete while also trying to help and inspire others.”

What challenges have you faced and overcome?

Growing up it’s been difficult in many aspects, seeing my mum struggle as a single mum of 3 and trying her hardest whilst my father was a heroin addict – who died because of his addiction which I witnessed when I was 7 years old.

Being bullied because I was different as I developed Tourette's Syndrome aged 9 and Psoriasis on the skin around the same time. I have also suffered bullying and had a knife held to my throat because I was gay in my teens. I could say a hell of a lot more…I mean I question if these are the triggers to my mental health to this day, but yet I have somehow come this far because I never let those memories define me as an individual. Neither do I let it get in the way of my relationships with others.

What does being a positive male role model mean to you?

A male role model is not a celebrity to me in the slightest. Everyone can be a role model to someone. For me though as someone without a Father as they were growing up, a male role model to me is someone who actually takes care of their own and someone who will do anything within their power to ensure they are protected at all costs. I see many Male role models on a daily basis and I think they need recondition for that, because despite their own mental health and personal issues, they are also developing and helping others. Why would you want someone with millions in their bank to be your role model, when you have an everyday man that struggles and stands up to help his own and others.

What 3 things do you do mentally to stay healthy?

This is a good question, without a doubt I have tried many things over the years, yet I could not find the benefit of so many. I then discovered meditation on a deeper level through nature and I really cannot explain enough how much this changed my life. To the point that I begun to teach and help others in lockdown through meditation and relaxation on Instagram, Facebook and other platforms. A lot of people say that you have to sit cross legged and hum! This is not the case. Just by meditation 20 minutes a day it really allows you to stay in tune with yourself as an individual person alongside balancing your emotions and feelings towards the world.

I also love to dance and listen to music. This really helps me break free and feel like I can sing as loud as I want, I also dance like crazy to whatever I feel is right in that moment. I studied Performing Arts when I was younger and for someone with ADHD like myself, it really helped me not only understand myself as an individual but also grow into someone who enjoyed life. I love to be with people around me that not I only love but also love me. This really helps talking and just feeling you can express yourself for just you being you!

What advice would you give men through a difficult time?

Do not blame yourself for feeling

like this firstly. Speak either to someone you know you can trust or call one of the many charity helplines to just let loose. It is ok to be angry. There will be a stage you feel lonely and scared, please do let someone you know you feel like this. I have been there and to be honest, I did not realise actually who cared for me until I said I need HELP! The hardest sentence to say to someone. YOU GOT THIS CHAMP!!

What is the secret to your success?

Success? What is that? Everyone sees success so differently. Mine for sure has changed. Somedays it was just waking up and managing to get out of bed to just walk the dog. Once I thought it was because I wrote a play about WW2 and toured it across the UK & Sweden. Success is a word, the feeling is different to each person. If you feel you just achieved one thing in the day, that is what’s successful. We are always trying to do so much at once but not able to achieve what we thought because we worry about getting everything right at once.

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your lives and why?

Oh you got me on this one? if I'm honest DANNY DYER my true love. He influences me to be a bit of a GEEZA GAY with a star strong attitude. Yes, I know he is not gay himself, I mean in my dreams he is. But less of this HA-HA. Onto the next questions before I say something I shouldn't!

MANZOOR ISHANI

SOLICITOR & FRSA, STAGECOACH THEATRE ARTS

Manzoor is a Surrey based solicitor in a private practice (formerly a senior partner with City firm) with more than 40 years’ experience in UK and international licensing, franchising and distribution. He has lectured on the subject for various organisations and institutions (including the International Bar Association, Union Internationale des Avocats; the City of Westminster Law Society, the International Franchise Association, the European Franchise Federation, The Institute of Marketing, NatWest Bank, Barclays Bank and RBS) to businessmen, academics and lawyers in Mexico, America, Canada, UK, the Middle East, Scandinavia, continental Europe and Australia.

He has assisted franchisors to franchise in 32 countries. More recently he has been International Development Director with Stagecoach Theatre Arts Plc forming 650 Stagecoach schools in the UK and internationally and Executive Chairman of its German subsidiaryStagecoach Theatre Arts School Gmbh. He currently resides in Oxshott.

What is the secret to your success as an entrepreneur?

My success has depended on others. I couldn’t have done it without their support. Everyone working in reception, accounts, IT, marketing, R&D, sales, accounts, etc. and finally professional business minded lawyers. One can be possessed of entrepreneurial spirit and drive but that in itself is seldom enough.

What advice would you give to men just starting out in business?

Seek to provide products or services with which you are familiar. Avoid anything that is fashionable. Take the advice of a Chartered Accountant, they will give you a realistic estimate of how much capital you will need. Be patient, there is no fast track to success. It is said that 70% of small business start-ups fail

within the first three years, so be realistic about your expectations. Whatever you do, it will be hard work and involve long hours so it is important that you have the support of your partner, it’s a lonely business at first. Be positive and be optimistic; remember good days can follow bad days. It is better to have failed than to regret not having tried at all. Having said that, there is little to compare with the euphoria you will feel if you are successful.

What challenges have you faced and overcome in your life?

As a commercial solicitor having to get to grips with the constant flow of new and everchanging legislation: employment, intellectual property, information technology, compliance, etc. As International Development Direct of Stagecoach Performing Arts (extra-curricular part time schools teaching children between the ages of 4-18 years, the disciplines of singing, dance and drama) with responsibility for opening schools in various countries; USA, Ireland, Germany, Malta, South Africa, Australia and Greece. Although the concept was readily acceptable, the real challenge was to overcome the cultural difficulties while preserving the ethos of the concept and coping with the difficulties of conducting a business in foreign languages.

risk taking and resilience became a very successful barrister, entrepreneur and politician.

What 3 things do you do to stay mentally healthy?

What does being a positive male role model mean to you?

Leading by example. Technical expertise apart, demonstrate that you have done what you are asking others to do. Translate your vision into a positive result by empowering others and giving them ownership of the task you assign to them. Be colour blind and be gender blind. Above all, don’t be territorial – don’t be afraid to teach others and give them the full benefit of your knowledge and experience - remember, a candle loses none of its brightness by lighting another.

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your lives and why?

My father who, following misfortune, through sheer hard work,

Physical exercise, researching material for my books and listening to live music whenever possible.

What advice would you give other men who may be going through a difficult time?

Think nice thoughts; Good/ fond memories can help overcome anxiety even if for a short period. Don’t be afraid to seek help from a professional or someone close who is nonjudgemental –it’s good to talk. Look to and plan the future – tempting though it is, don’t dwell on the past you find upsetting.

PHIL PHILIPPOU CO-FOUNDER, HEADLEY CLAY PIGEON

Phil began his career at British Aerospace in 1987, working on the legendary Harrier jump jet as an aeronautical electrician. He then went onto form Headley Clay Pigeon in 1993, with his parents George & Effie. The club has since gone on to win over 20 awards including the best shooting experience in Southern England from 2021 – 2024. It always has close to 300 members at all shoots and runs regular breakfasts, BBQ’s and socials alongside the amazing shooting layouts and academy. Phil is also the husband of Spaghetti Tree founder Maria and he spearheaded the recent refurbishment of the Spaghetti Tree in Warlingham.  He has also designed and built restaurants & bars in and around London for the last 30 years. Phil is a family man at heart and still lives with his children at the family home in Surrey.

What is the secret to your success as an entrepreneur?

Longevity and passion... along with my dear Mum and Dad, Effie & George, we formed the shoot 32 years ago with a family experience in mind. Teamed up with our unique Greek Cypriot hospitality, awardwinning layouts, an incredible academy and a team of experts, hundreds of people now visit the club on a fortnightly basis.

What advice would you give to men just starting out in business?

Follow your passion! If you love what you do, you'll never have to work a day in your life!

What challenges have you faced and overcome in your life?

Everyone has a story in them, my challenges were mostly self-inflicted. There's always a solution to a problem and challenges can be overcome, although the death of my father George in 2021 to Covid, was particularly difficult to deal with. I don't think you ever get over something like that, you just learn to live with it.

What does being a positive male role model mean to you?

It means everything. My journey was filled with wise men trying to set a young idiot on the straight and narrow. I'd like to think that now I am older and wiser, perhaps I can use my knowledge, experience and past mistakes to help those around me.

You must be so proud of your wife Maria and daughter Dana with their Spaghetti Tree success?

So very proud of them both! They continue to inspire me, I'm just so very proud to be along for the journey.

How do you juggle your family and work life?

We have a very busy household. Maria's children and my daughter live at home with us at the moment! So we do all see each other every day even if it's in passing. When possible, we try and sit down altogether at least once a week. Both myself and Maria love to cook so it's never a chore! Sunday is always Roast day! We have 2 beautiful Siberian Husky's so they keep me fit and healthy on long runs across the Downs. Other than Headley Clay Pigeon, I've been designing and building restaurants & bars in and around London for the last 30 years. This has spilled over into projects with Maria & Dana including the renovation of three Spaghetti Trees. In between all this, we still manage to get away as we love our trips and exploring new places.

How was it being part of the refurbishment of the Warlingham Restaurant?

It was nothing short of incredible and a pleasure to work with the girls on not just the Warlingham refurb but all the restaurants in this beautiful chain, Spaghetti Tree, that Maria and Dana own. Warlingham was an exceptional build because it took into account a lot of emotion and a lot of sadness that we had to push to one side in order to finish the project. We completed it to an exceptional standard, although more importantly it's not the

same as it was. It's different. It feels different. It looks different and it creates a more spacious vibe, I believe than the original.

Who are the men who have had the biggest influence on your life and why?

My father George. Spiritually, he still plays a massive part in my life and pushes me forward every day.  My father-in-law, Luigi, who opened the first Spaghetti Tree in 1985 continues to teach me the importance of perseverance, determination and hard work.

What 3 things do you do to stay mentally healthy?

Netflix! Walk the Husky's! It really clears the head!  I also talk to the ones I love every day.

What advice would you give other men who may be going through a difficult time?

Be open and honest, talk about your issues, you know who you can trust, you know who you can talk to. We've all been there. Any man who is struggling and stubborn enough to hide his feelings is heading for a fall, then it's a long way back.

What advice would you give other men who may be going through a difficult time?

It's crucial to seek support when experiencing tough times. Talk to friends or professionals and don't hesitate to express your feelings. Remember that asking for help shows strength, not weakness.

The Darker Months - a Psychoanalytic on Being Indoors

Perhaps while clinging onto memories of the sun, we have taken a rapid descent into crisp mornings and rain-filled days.

Linda says “That’s it, Summer’s over”, as Anne responds “we didn’t even get one, did we?” and with that, the longer days are behind us. We equip ourselves with extra layers, line up the next series-to-watch and fuel the days with hot drinks, all while aware that we are probably going to be spending a lot more time indoors.

Months Psychoanalytic Perspective

Indoors More.

Iam going to dig down a touch into what being indoors means. It means being indoors with colleagues more, perhaps over breaks when we might have preferred to be out of the office and being with partners and family more. There is something significant about the walls that contain us and hold us inside together. Our unconscious mind might recall from this seasonal shift what being indoors once meant many years ago.

Thinking back to being indoors as a young child at home with the family will bring up different feelings for us all. Some might smile at memories of cosy nights with games and laughter, whereas others might wince at the thought of hearing grown-up arguments filtering through their bedroom walls. There might be experiences that some recall of uncomfortable silences and endless events never discussed. Perhaps we think back to a mixture of positive and negative experiences. These experiences of ours, once “enclosed” as a child behind the family front door, have formed a part of our unconscious mind.

The unconscious mind doesn’t operate in the same way that our conscious mind does. It has no real concept of many of the things that we have come to learn over the course of our life. It is much wilder in its nature, making links more from instinctive feelings and sending signals to our conscious minds. We will often then feel some sort of motivation to act on these signals, essentially to feel as well as we can. If the signals are uncomfortable, we will sometimes act in defence to stay afloat. In the darker months, our behaviour and routines will often change so as to survive, both practically and emotionally and our unconscious mind plays some part in driving these changes.

With the longer nights and more time indoors, we are also drawn to look inwards more. There are fewer distractions available to us, which in some ways mimics the intentions of a psychoanalytic space. However, the exception is that the former is often a journey within the self carried out alone. This could be a positive experience, but equally, this can also lead

to an unpleasant state of mind which can be a struggle to climb out of.

The family is another sensitive area at this time of year, many of our feelings are fuelled by a combination of our childhood experiences and current situations. Some simply don’t want to be around their family but feel compelled to be so. Some don’t have family to see and have no choice but to fill the longer evenings alone. Some are sole or single parents and some are divorcing parents contemplating an unknown journey ahead. Some are together and don’t want to be and some are alone and also don’t want to be. Some have stressful dynamics with wider family members on the horizon. Some are grieving.

Society’s pressure (often together with our own unconscious drives) makes many feel that presenting as well means that we are well, particularly when society validates this back to us. It is particularly easy in society today to feel a pull towards beavering away to maintain a pretence of “great” outside the front door, while hiding the reality inside. But what happens if this pretence extends to the people within the house? Then the front door becomes symbolic of the self, keeping

within the struggles and probably working very hard to do so. Everyone’s defences to anxiety and uncomfortable feelings operate in a different way, although there can be some patterns and similarities shared between us. This is because everyone’s story is different and this includes what happened behind the front door of our childhood homes. What is shared though is that we are now bedding-in to the new season, one filled with yearly traditions which often include families coming together in enclosed spaces, and this is a familiar change that we have experienced time and time again since

Taking a reflective and curious position within the self can help to gain a more meaningful understanding of why we do things or why we feel a certain way. Considering how we tend to feel or behave at this time of year and if it feels comfortable, digging down a little and thinking back to earlier times, can help us to identify patterns and gain an understanding towards where these patterns might have originated from. However, and especially if it feels more comfortable and safe, this should be explored together with a qualified therapist.

HILTON COBHAM

SEVEN HILLS RESTAURANT, BAR & TERRACE

We were over the moon to be invited to the stunning Seven Hills Restaurant, Bar & Terrace located at Hilton Cobham to try out their new Winter Menu.

Not only does the newly renovated Seven Hills Restaurant, Bar & Terrace at Hilton Cobham offer fabulous food, delicious drinks, striking interiors and charismatic charm but being nestled among the rolling hills and huge, statuesque trees, the hotel rooms offer relaxing and luxurious hotel accommodation for those wanting a perfect Winter getaway with charismatic charm.

Hotel guests and Surrey locals can enjoy their fantastic Winter all-day dining menu, signature cocktails, locally-brewed beers and delicious bar bites - all while enjoying relaxing, unmatched woodland views.

OUR EXPERIENCE

We arrived for our dinner on a busy Friday night in October and even the drive through the enchanting woodland that surrounds Hilton Cobham was pure pleasure. It really is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy neighbouring towns of Cobham, Esher and Weybridge.

On arrival to Hilton Cobham’s main reception we were greeted warmly by the

friendly team members. The hotel is grand, bright, airy and oozes luxury and sophistication.

A short walk through the ground floor and you come to the Seven Hills Restaurant, Bar & Terrace, which has 3 impressive different dining areas: the lounge, the dining room and the outdoor terrace.

Now onto the fabulous food. The new Winter Menu that we ordered from had 45 tantalising options to choose from.

You can choose from their ‘Small Plates’ such as ‘Tempura Squid’, ‘Spiced Lamb Kofta’ or ‘Hoisin Mushroom Skewers.’

We decided to go for the ‘Sticky Pigs in Blankets with Cranberry Sauce’ which were delicious and cooked perfectly in a sweet and sticky honey and mustard glaze and the ‘Tempura Squid’ which was served with a delightful chilli mayo garnished beautifully with spring onions and red chillis. A taste explosion with really crispy batter and tender,

generous portions of squid rings.

Our lovely starters were accompanied by an interesting taste testing session! We were offered two glasses of Pommery Brut each. One was the Louis Pommery England Brut, a British sparkling wine, and the other was the equally tasty Pommery Brut Royal, a Champagne. We had to decide our favourite. Although both were amazing we went for the lighter, drier and more bubbly Pommery Brut Royal. I took it as a win on our part, that we obviously have more discerning, luxurious tastebuds! Thanks for the experiment

Seven Hills, it was a lot of fun deciphering!

And now onto Mains. On the recommendation of our helpful waitress, Thea, we went for the ‘Beef Bourguignon Cottage Pie.’ It consisted of braised steak, cooked in a rich red wine gravy sauce with baby onions and lashings of crispy pancetta. It was accompanied with Grana Padano mashed potato, wilted kale and glazed rainbow carrots. A total triumph of a dish.

We also went for the ‘Smash

Cheeseburger’ which consisted of a beef patty, smoked cheddar, BBQ relish, ranch dressing, gem lettuce, tomato, pickles, potato bun and fries. You can choose to have with bacon, which I did. It was amazing and beautifully presented. The beef patty was so tender and cooked to perfection. The flavours of the ranch dressing alongside the BBQ relish were immense - a perfect

accompaniment to the tastiest burger. This dish is highly recommended! The fries were delicious too, cooked with skin-on they were really crispy and came with lots of dipping options - including cute mini Heinz Tomato Ketchup and Hellman’s Mayonnaise jars – which we all know the kids love if you are bringing yours to Hilton Cobham!

We browsed the dessert menu with Sweet Treats including the ‘Pastel De Nata’ which is a mini Portuguese custard tart and the ‘Mochi Ice-Cream’ – with a choice of salted caramel, coconut or raspberry flavoured ice-cream inside a chewy rice flour dough casing and the ‘Rich Chocolate Brownie’ offset with sea salt.

Honestly after the hugest and most delicious mains we were so full, we had to pass on the dessert option.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

IN SUMMARY

One of the tastiest meals we have had this year. The Seven Hills Restaurant, Bar & Terrace is a must try. Beautiful location, amazing food and superb service. The new Winter Menu is a must try. We didn’t opt for pizzas or nachos, this time, but we will definitely be back soon to test out.

MOVEMBER

As the leaves fall and the air gets chillier, November brings with it a cause close to my heart. Movember. For those who aren't familiar, Movember is more than just an excuse to grow out that stubble; it's a global movement aimed at raising awareness for men's health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. Over the years, I've seen firsthand the impact this charity has had on countless lives, and I'm proud to take part this year. In this month's column, I'm sharing my own Movember journey, how you can get involved, and the key people who can guide you if you're ready to make a difference.

CHANGING THE FACE OF MEN'S

HEALTH

Movember began as a humble initiative in 2003, with just 30 men growing out their moustaches to raise funds for men's health. Today, it's a global charity that has funded over 1,200 men's health projects, focusing on mental health, suicide prevention and cancer research. The movement has grown not just in scope but also in the number of participants, with millions joining in every year to grow, fundraise, and create a conversation around men's health issues that are often overlooked or stigmatised.

LEWIS SIDNEY GUMBRELL, ALSO KNOWN AS SID DA BARBER, IS AN ESTEEMED BARBER, EDUCATOR, AWARD-WINNING FINALIST AND PROUD AMBASSADOR FOR TOP BRANDS SUCH AS MCR BARBER SUPPLIES AND RUDE CAPES. HE IS CURRENTLY HONING HIS CRAFT AT JACKS OF LONDON IN GUILDFORD AND TEACHES BARBER EDUCATION TWICE A WEEK. Joining the Movember movement is simple and meaningful. You don't need to be a barber or a health advocate, anyone can join and take part in some way.

GROWING A MOUSTACHE

The classic way to support Movember. Whether it's a handlebar, or humble stubble, growing a Mo is a great way to start conversations and raise awareness.

MOVE FOR MOVEMBER

Commit to walking or running 60 km over the month – 1 km for each of the 60 men lost to suicide every hour across the world.

MO YOUR OWN WAY

Get creative and set your own challenge. Whether it's a fundraising event, daring stunt or a personal goal, the main thing is to raise funds and awareness.

Who to Contact: Movember Ambassadors:

Reach out to local ambassadors who can guide you on how to start, give you fundraising tips, and share their own stories.

Local Barber Shops:

Many barbershops nationwide, are not just supporting the movement but actively participating in it by hosting events, offering themed haircuts, and raising awareness.

On November 3rd, I'll be showcasing my skills at the prestigious Great British Barber Bash in Birmingham, where I'll be cutting hair live alongside some of the industry's top talents. Additionally, I'm honored to be nominated for the Best Fade Award at the Booksy Live Fashion Show in Tenerife, an event that celebrates excellence and innovation in barbering. This recognition reflects my commitment to delivering exceptional fades and precision cuts, and I'm excited to be apart of both shows.

While Movember is all about the 'Mo,' we haven't forgotten about the festivities. This past month, iv had fun looking out for Halloween-themed haircuts that capture the spooky spirit. LOUISE SCOTLAND STYLES

FASHION BRANDS

There's definitely been a noticeable shift in the fashion world, particularly on social media, where influencers and content creators are opting for bags that offer both style and quality at a more affordable price. While high-end brands like Hermès, Chanel, and Gucci remain iconic, the rise of more modestly priced, luxury-quality brands is reshaping the market. These newer brands are filling the gap for consumers looking for creativity, craftsmanship, and timeless design without the hefty price tag.

HI MY NAME IS LOUISE AND I HAVE BEEN WORKING IN THE FASHION AND BEAUTY INDUSTRY FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS; INCLUDING HAIR, MAKE-UP AND STYLING FOR TELEVISION, EDITORIAL, FASHION WEEKS, CELEBRITIES, AND MANY A FASHION SHOOT OVER THE YEARS. I AM ALSO A CONTENT CREATOR, PUTTING TOGETHER MANY DIFFERENT OUTFITS WEEKLY, WHICH I LOOK FORWARD TO SHARING WITH YOU ALL. I NOW MOSTLY FIND MYSELF BURIED ALIVE AT HOME IN CLOTHES, SKINCARE AND MAKE-UP… EVERY WOMAN’S DREAM.

CHALLENGING THE INDUSTRY

HERE ARE A FEW UPCOMING BRANDS MAKING WAVES:

POLÈNE PARIS

Known for its unique shapes and minimalist aesthetic, Polène combines high-end craftsmanship with affordability, creating bags that are luxurious but attainable.

DEMELLIER

This London-based brand emphasises ethically made, timeless bags that empower women. DeMellier is also committed to giving back, making it a favourite for conscious shoppers.

CAFUNÉ

With its roots in Hong Kong, Cafuné's sleek and modern designs blend function and form.

The brand stands out for its focus on versatility and mindfulness, appealing to fashion-forward consumers looking for longevity in their purchases.

PARISA WANG

A New York-based brand that makes luxury handbags accessible without compromising on quality. Known for its iconic circular handles and elegant designs, Parisa Wang brings a modern edge to everyday accessories.

These brands are redefining what it means to carry an "IT" bag, challenging the traditional dominance of the big names while offering a more inclusive approach to luxury fashion.

THE COLOUR TO BE WEARING RIGHT NOW

Brown really is having its moment this season, and I completely

agree; it's such a great alternative to black. It's warm, inviting, and brings a fresh vibe to classic autumn looks. Adidas has been on point with their brown-toned releases for the Samba and Handball Spezial collections, and suede is especially perfect for this time of year, adding texture and depth to any outfit.

Brown suede boots or a statement bag can effortlessly elevate an outfit, and they look incredible paired with denim or neutral shades like cream, beige, or even muted greens. Mixing these tones and textures really lets you play with different layers, giving an outfit both sophistication and edge.

Thanks for reading.

Lots of love, Louise x For more tips and tricks, follow me on

CUFFING SEASON

Darlings the weather has officially turned, the heating is on and we are feeling full of the joys of Autumn in The Essex household at the moment. In dating terms, this time is called 'Cuffing Season'. It means a time when singles come together for the cold Winter months as cuddles and cosy nights in replace the pub gardens and parties of the Summer.

If you are ready to find someone this Winter season its important you know the do’s and don’ts, so here are my top 5 red flags that you should never ignore:

1 - THEY DESCRIBE ALL OF THEIR EXES AS “CRAZY”

Read between the lines, if someone says all their exes are crazy, the common factor here is them. Usually it really means they themselves lied, cheated, gas lit and generally didn’t make their partners feel safe and so the partner became jealous, controlling or argumentative aka “crazy”. It is extremely likely you will be joining the ranks of the “crazy” ex club when you get fed up of their bad behaviour too. Don’t waste your time. Get out now while you still can, I bet all of their exes wish they could have seen the red flags and steered clear.

2 - THEY DON’T LISTEN TO YOU

It's easy to let this trait go in the beginning and passing it off as nerves or excitement if someone talks over you. But, you have to ask yourself “how does this person show they care about what’s important to me” and "how much of my life do they really know”. Not feeling listened to in the beginning is likely to build into a bigger resentment down the line. If you have raised the subject and asked them to be more attentive and

SEASON IS UPON US

they show a short-term improvement before going back to how it was, it’s likely you will break up anyway, so save the heartache and don’t ignore this big red flag.

3 - THEY PUT YOU DOWN EVEN IN JEST

Words hurt and even if they say “it was only a joke” it doesn’t erase the hurt in your heart. Your true love wouldn’t want to hurt you, so if they dismiss your pain and continue to do it, then say YOU are being too sensitive and try to blame you, it’s time to call it a day. You are supposed to be a team and teams don’t deliberately hurt each other with their words, especially if you have been honest about how much it hurts and they continue the behaviour.

isn’t anything you can do, it’s on them to work on themselves and heal their past trauma.

5 - THEY ARE AT A DIFFERENT STAGE IN THEIR LIFE

We have all heard the saying 'right person, wrong time’ and sometimes it’s totally true. If you are not on the same page it’s not going to work. If you are ready to settle down and start a family and they are ready to quit their job and go travelling around Mexico, this isn’t your person. Morals and values have to match if you stand a chance at a long-term relationship.

4 - THEY RESPOND POORLY WHEN YOU TAKE TIME AWAY FROM THEM

In the beginning it can feel lovely and flattering even, but the novelty of ‘feeling loved’ will fade and if they still continue to pout, guilt trip you or make you feel bad for spending time away from them that is a huge red flag. Spending too much time with the person you are dating is not good. Even if you want to be with them all the time it is better to take time away. If they are struggling when you take time for yourself, it usually means they have abandonment issues or displaying traits of possessiveness. Unless they are working on it or willing to work on it you don’t stand much chance of a healthy long-term relationship and there

And my Bonus tip - If you are dating online and their profile seems too good to be true, it’s usually because it isn’t. Obviously if the picture doesn't match them if you meet them in real life, then run don’t walk from that date, but, even if the picture does match up, sometimes people write things that they think will show their best self and turns out that is an over exaggeration. If they say they like to go to the gym but never seem to go and just want to eat takeaway and play computer games it’s worth noting as it can represent dishonesty or unmatched motivation and life goals so worth listening to your gut & potentially deciding to call it quits before you catch feelings.

Dating is difficult and finding the right person to have a longterm relationship with is even harder. But it IS possible and you definitely deserve love. So even if that little voice in your head says you are not worthy then I am here to tell you it’s wrong. You are so special and made of the same stuff of the stars. You deserve all the love in the world.

YOUR NOVEMBER ASTROLOGY FORECAST FROM JESSICA ADAMS NOVEMBER 2024 Hot Stars!

Aries

21 MAR – 20 APR

The Sun passes through the same cycles and houses in your life, at around the same time, every year. This cycle forces you to confront yourself as others see you. In November, this is about your finance and property zone. You are used to seeing yourself, and your world, from the same old angles – but what angles do others have on you? Either way, what needs to stay/go will be wonderfully clear.

Taurus

21 APR – 20 MAY

With your other half, or the other side, you can charge ahead without any of the mixed feelings, contradictions or inner conflicts that can get in the way of progress at other times. You’ll feel ‘together’ in a way that’s quite unusual, when a New Moon arrives on November 1st – total focus and certainty is now easy to achieve.

Gemini

22 MAY – 21 JUNE

Mercury the messenger is retrograde. During these cycles, you will need to focus on your way with the written and spoken word, and your ability to make a lot of connections very quickly – because it will be reversing or stuck. Your other half, or the other side, is the focus. It's a restless, extremely busy time when you'll be constantly rescheduling quick contacts, places and connections until December.

Cancer

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

Mercury Retrograde in your wellbeing and work zonebrings a butterfly effect with it, until January 2025, but at this time, you will be the butterfly. This can make you prone to rescheduling. Pit stops are required. Three times a year, for about three weeks, Mercury appears to move backwards. People change their minds. They're too late – or much too early – and sometimes they don't turn up at all. Be flexible.

Leo

24 JULY – 23 AUG

Commonly, the atmosphere at this time is busy and lively, but also shambolic. Welcome to Mercury Retrograde in November-January. It will concern your love life, children or plans concerning students or teenagers. People recycle ideas, issues, plans and deals to see what will happen – but more often than not, what takes place leaves them stuck exactly where they were before. Rehearse and review.

Virgo

24 AUG – SEPT 3

There is typically a vast amount of analysis, discussion, gossip, sales talk – and loose talk – when Mercury is retrograde. Some of it will stick, and some of it will not. It is wise to avoid property negotiations during Mercury retrograde cycles because you may change your mind later, or find you could have swung a better deal somewhere else. It’s the same with renovations. Have Plan B and C,  Virgo.

24 SEPT – 23 OCT

If you can ask for time to think and ponder now, with the internet or the media, it's probably a good idea. Once this cycle is over, you will be in a better position to make sense of what has been 'decided' or under so much discussion. Mercury Retrograde is good for rehearsals. Mercury Retrograde, when it affects your travel and transport, is rescheuled. The ‘re’ prefix is applicable when this cycle is here.

SCORPIO

24 OCT – 22 NOV

We see financial and property rethinking in November for you. Purchases and sales too. This is about restoration and recall. Resurrection. Returned letters from the Returned Letter Office. Revision. Revival. Rescheduling. Rewrites. Product recall. This period is about understanding that even though there is rethinking ahead of you, it’s time to join forces or find a compromise in a buyer-seller situation.

Sagittarius

23 NOV – 21 DEC

With money, business, charity or property now, Venus is about duets and duels. She commonly puts us on the same road as someone whose life experience is radically different to our own. This man or woman may be streets ahead of us – or miles behind us. Nevertheless, you must now find some common ground, and locate the central axis of your relationship or association. November 19 is a sign-off.

21 JAN – 19 FEB

This planet Mars in your zone of duets and duels, rulesaction. Mars cycles, in combination with the far more important cycles of the nodes and slow-moving planets, bring an increase in tempo. A lack of patience, tolerance and calm is notable on a Mars cycle. Life speeds up. Mars is the Roman god of war. It is typically a time when you or others declare war on something – or someone. Try to pace yourself with this one Aquarius.

Capricorn

22 DEC – 20 JAN

Your relaunch happens in stages until January. Driving forward from that axis of co-operation with someone, about the new you, is what this cycle is all about. Venus wants us to balance each other out now, and use as much tact, sensitivity, care, tolerance and good timing as possible, in order to truly cooperate.

Pisces

20 FEB – 20 MAR

With enough faith, hope and optimism, Jupiter says, all this can be yours with a house or apartment, garden or holiday home. To make the most of this cycle, make sure you are prepared to see the big picture! Jupiter gives you the opportunity. It does not take the journey for you. A bigger future is waiting, though, so why not peer into it?

Autumn Astrology

Hello my lovely people. I have been writing about astrology and have studied it since 2008 along with doing tarot readings. I want to spread the word of what's going on in astrology the next month that will affect many people and star signs.

So a big change and movement is Pluto coming out of Capricorn which has been in since 2008. Capricorn is about authority and money and Pluto is about destruction so we have seen the economy go up and down since it 1st went in. Its dipped in and out of Aquarius this year and is doing its last 3 weeks in Capricorn till the 19th when it stays in Aquarius till 2043 so 18 years of this cycle.

Anyone with Capricorn or Aquarius in their chart will feel this change especially Capricorns in the next 3 weeks, it’s about letting go of the past and making sure you learned your lessons of the last 16 years. It’s been emotional for a lot of Capricorns but now you have the Aquarius age in Pluto we will see more about the collective coming together to build a better future. Its exciting times as Aquarius works well as a team so fingers crossed for more calmer times in the world.

Lastly, we have the planet Mercury going reverse on November 25th in Sagittarius, Mercury rules communication and

travel so as its going reverse it will affect car and plane travel before Christmas and also be careful how you communication "be kind " is my advice and think before you speak.

BRADLEY – S CLUB 7

WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN WRITING SONGS?

When I write a song, it depends what I am feeling at that moment. If the beat that I’m writing to is a dance beat it has got to be uplifting and if it’s a slow song I have to dig deep into my emotions and find out what’s going on in there and be true to my emotions.

WHAT SONG DO YOU ENJOYING PERFORMING THE MOST & WHY?

Well it has to be the old “Oggy, oggy, oggy. Oi, oi, oi!” It gets everyone going every time!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT AS A PERFORMER?

Be true to yourself. Don’t listen to anyone and just go with your heart. Everyone has got an opinion. There is no wrong or right to being an artist, just follow your soul.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP?

I always wanted to be a singer, I always wanted to be an entertainer and I have fulfilled that dream.

WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE?

Idris Elba.

We caught up with Bradley McIntosh from award-winning 90’s pop group S Club 7 at the recent Spaghetti Tree Warlingham Reopening Party on October 2nd where Bradley was performing. He kindly gave up his time off stage to give us this exclusive interview about his career, life and everything else in between.

WHAT IS YOUR WORST HABIT?

(Thinking about answering the question Bradley bites his lip!)

Oh yeah, biting my lip I always bite my top lip when I’m thinking deeply about stuff!!

WHAT IS THE MOST EMBARRASSING THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?

Definitely forgetting the words at a Proms in the Park Concert! They

had me sing a song called ‘Put Your Head On My Shoulders’ and I forgot the words and I had to make it up as I was going along! So embarrassing!

WHAT COULDN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?

My son.

WHAT ALL THE GIRLS WANT TO KNOW, ARE YOU SINGLE? I am not single, sorry ladies!

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A WOMAN?

Slim, brunette and pretty.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

A pillow, music and a friend for companionship.

IF YOU HAD AN APPRENTICE WHAT WOULD YOU TEACH THEM IN LIFE?

I’m all for people being themselves so be yourself, embrace your own ambitions and go for your own goals. Being genuine and authentic is the key to success in life I believe.
