POGBA HITS OUT AT BROTHER OVER £11M EXTORTION Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba is claiming his brother Mathius is part of a “group-organised extortion attempt” against him. This is in response to Mathius’ claims on his social media that he is planning to make “great revelations” about “very important things” that would make fans and teammates look at his brother Paul in a very different light.

In a statement released on Sunday 28th August, Paul Pogba’s lawyers, said: “The recent declarations of Mathias Pogba on social media are unfortunately not a surprise. They are coming after threats and attempts of extortion by an organised gang against Paul Pogba. Police in France have opened an investigation into the footballer’s claims.

The interview comes as LeBeouf, 36, is also being sued by his former girlfriend, musician FKA twigs for “relentless abuse” including sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress. A trial date of 17 April, 2023 has been set for the case. LaBeouf denies all charges. To make matters worse for the actor he has also been dropped from his latest film ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ by director/actress Olivia Wilde for “combative energy” and “tensions.”

Simon Cowell’s company SyCo is set to face a £1m lawsuit as six former ‘X Factor’ contestants are intending to sue the show for “bullying, mistreatment andTheneglect.” as-yet-unnamed participants, include 5 former solo acts and a group, who are seeking compensation for the amount they claim to have spent on medical treatments. A claimant told the Sunday Mirror, “Being on the show was a horrific experience. Myself and five former acts have agreed to join forces and get the justice we feel we deserve. Simon needs to take responsibility. We lost a lot of money from having periods of our lives not making money to deal with trauma still ingrained from the show.” They claim they have evidence to support their allegations – including emails, recordings and psychological assessments. It is reported that the claimants have approached lawyers and plan to bring the case over the coming months. Simon Cowell’s SyCo has said there is no allegation that Simon Cowell was in any way aware or personally involved in the incidents or behaviour alleged by the claimants.

STYLEICONS

Our favourite male celebs are pushing the fashion boundaries and choosing uber cool clothing choices to make them stand out from the crowd. As Surrey Fashion Week unfolds, on September 30th at the Great Fosters Hotel, we salute these famous male style icons and their bold fashion choices. Pitt, 53, despite going all Barbie on us at his recent ‘Bullet Train’ premiere and being embroiled in “arguments on planes” with his ex Angelina – Brad has always had the midas touch when it comes to his fashion choices. He teams effortlessly chic tailoring with a more relaxed, laid back long-sleeved T-shirt vibe. He usually prefers muted colour tones, so we applaud his Barbie-esque risk taking suit choice at his recent premiere. Plus he dares to bare shorts, sweater vests and Hawaiian shirtsbucking all the normal Hollywood trends.

This is a perfect, light dish that would lend itself well to one of the top three bestselling white wines on the market. Namely a Chardonnay (but select one with made little or no oak contact) a Pinot Gris (a fruitier of all the French wines) or a classic Italian Pinot Grigio would also make a fantastic choice for this meal, with the pear and apple notes carrying the delicacy of the chicken and salad beautifully.

1. To make the crust, combine all the ingredients with a pinch of salt. Pour in 120ml of warm water and bring everything together, then knead for about 10 mins to form a smooth ball of dough. Divide the dough into two balls, then roll out each one to a thickness of 0.5cm on a lightly floured surface.

3. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Bake the chicken parcels for 45 mins, then remove from the oven and leave to stand for 20 mins. Carefully open the parcels with a sharp, serrated knife, then lift the chicken onto a baking tray. Grill the chicken for 5 mins to crisp up and colour the skin – or use a blowtorch if you have one, which would be faster and more even.

The film stirred controversy surrounding a relative unknown Ana De Armas’ being cast as the iconic actress, as well as the material with a “fictionalised telling” of Marilyn Monroe’s journey through a series of very abusive relationships. De Armas was announced to play Norma Jean in 2019, with the film originally set for a 2021 release date. The film has since been pushed back to a September 23rd 2022 release.

Actor Brad Pitt has also said how Ana de Armas transformed the ‘Blonde’ production. “She is phenomenal in it,” Pitt went on to say: “And that’s a tough dress to fill!”

The new album features his single ‘My Heart’s Been Waiting For You’ featuring Duvall. The track screams summer and has a beautiful blend of melodies and anthemic house beats being played in all the major clubs worldwide. David has also collaborated with Galantis on new track ‘DNA’ which will be a floorfiller no Speakingdoubt!of the album and its delay David said: “Wanted to share an update with you all about my new album #22. Due to production and manufacturing delays it’s taken longer than I hoped to make the perfect album you’ll love! ’22’ will now be released on September 30th and will also be available to buy on vinyl. Thank you for your patience with the album, I promise it’ll be worth the wait for you all.”

Craig David, who studied at Kingston College in Surrey in his teens, is releasing his 8th studio album on September 30th. It’s the much-anticipated, follow-up to his 2018 album ‘The Time is Now’ and is named after his 22-year career in the music industry. David started making music aged onlyOver19. the course of his hugely successful career, David has amassed 25 UK Top 40 singles, 9 UK Top 40 albums and has 5 billion streams worldwide. He has also received 14 BRIT Award nominations, 2 Grammy nominations, 4 MOBO Awards, 3 Ivor Novellos and an MBE for his services to music.

CRAIG DAVID – 22 It’s been a while but it will be well worth the wait!

A powerful and emotionally charged novel about family secrets, loss, identity, love and belonging; by London based author Lola Jaye. The story begins with two children trapped in the same attic almost a century apart, bound by a shared secret. In early 1900’s London, the first child in the novel - twelveyear-old Celestine is taken from his homeland and spends most of the time locked away in the attic of a large house by the sea. The only time he isn’t bound by confines of the small space is when he is acting as an unpaid servant to English explorer, Sir Richard Babbington. As the years pass, he desperately clings on to memories of his family in Africa, even as he struggles to remember his mother’s face and sometimes his name. Then you fast forward to London in 1974. The second central character, Lowra, a young orphan girl born into wealth and privilege whose fortunes have now changed, finds herself trapped in the very same attic. She is searching for a ray of light in the darkness of the attic and finds under the floorboards an oldfashioned pen, a porcelain doll, a beaded necklace and a message carved on the wall, written in an unidentifiable language. Providing comfort for her when all hope is lost, these clues will lead her to uncover the secrets of the attic. A haunting, cleverly-written book which you won’t be able to put down. Lola Jaye has already written 6 successful novels and a self-help book. This is her first foray into historical novel writing and it’s definitely a good one. Hope you enjoy reading as much as we did.

THE ATTIC CHILD

Dominik selected De Armas after almost a decade of trying to cast the lead role. Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts had reportedly been attached to the film, which has been in development for 12 years. The film, also starring Adrien Brody (from ‘The Piano’) as Arthur Miller is an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 book of the same name. Bobby Cannavale and Julianne Nicholson also star as figures in Monroe’s life.

Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (ABG), which owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate, said of the adaptation: “Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon that transcends generations and history. Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity, and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”

On receiving her Video Vanguard Award (won by major artists including The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Madonna and David Bowie) Nicki dedicated her award to all those in the music industry that have inspired her and made a poignant tribute to mental health sufferers.

Nicki also co-hosted the 2022 VMA’s with Jack Harlow and LL Cool J on August 28th at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, and even took to the stage to perform a medley of her songs.

Our September cover star Nicki Minaj has just collected the coveted MTV Video Vanguard Award for her career of hits at the recent VMA’s. Widely regarded as the pinnacle of the music industry awards, Nicki scooping this for her career at aged 39 is a staggering nod to the rapper.

A plethora of pop and colour that deserved its standing ovation.Often cited as the “Queen of Rap” and the “Queen of Hip Hop” by media outlets, Minaj is also one of the bestselling music artists, with more than 100 million records sold worldwide to date. She has also become the first female artist to have one hundred Billboard Hot 100 entries and has 21 US top ten singles.

Nicki Minaj comes from a large, close-knit family originally born in Trinidad. At one stage she was living with her brothers, sister and 11 cousins in just one house. Her mother Carol moved to the Bronx in New York to start a better life for the family aged only 24 after leaving her alcoholic abusive partner (Nicki’s Dad), leaving Minaj at home in her grandmother’s care.

When Carol got her house and greencard in the US, Minaj moved from Trinidad to Queens, New York to be with her mother and her immediate family (minus her Dad) aged 5. After school, she struggled to break into the music scene and acting world and has admitted being sacked from at least 15 jobs in the space of three years before she reached 19! It wasn’t until she met up with Lil’ Wayne the troublemaker Minaj eventually turned hitmaker.

DOUBLE PLATINUM ALL THE WAY

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13 39

Minaj has absolutely smashed her record sales, getting the highest accolade, “Double Platinum” for more than 2 million record sales for all 4 of her albums released so far. And the good news... a fifth album is on the way.

“So let me get this straight/ Wait, I’m the rookie? But my features and my shows 10 times your pay? 50K for a verse No album out!” she announced in her benchmark verse on West’s ‘Monster’ signalling her debut into the musicNickiindustry.Minajis gutsy and not afraid to tell it like it is. Probably another reason for her unrelenting staying power. Insiders say a collaboration with Nicki is a surefire hit - to this day, she often dwarfs the huge artists she’s featured alongside. Jessie J, Ariana Grande, (in ‘Bang Bang’) Doja Cat and Kanye to name but a few. Her rapping is also extremely distinctive for its fast flow and the use of alter egos and accents, primarily British cockney. Minaj is also widely known for her colourful costumes, wigs and jewellery too. She stands out from the plethora of rappers out there today and anyone who is anyone is clawing to work with her.

Within a few years of her first ever mixtape, ‘Playtime Is Over’, being released in 2007, Minaj had made it into the big time. She solidly established herself on Wayne’s “Young Money Entertainment camp” and was rapping on songs alongside artists like Robin Thicke, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and Kanye West.

A DIVADIVERSIFYING

Minaj is an entrepreneur at heart and like any good businesswoman she is constantly finding new ways to connect with her varied audiences, whether it’s via music, campaigns for brands including Pepsi, Moscato, MAC Cosmetics and K-Mart or even producing bottles of perfume shaped like her more than ample bust! She knows how to market herself! She has tackled and taken over the sometimes “snobbish” fashion glitterati too with campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Dior to name drop a few. Minaj has been described by pals as “a tough cookie”, “smart businesswoman” and a “little bit crazy”. From sell-out tours, to movies, to rap collaborations anything Nicki Minaj seems to touch turns to gold - including our front cover.

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13 41 SCREEN STARLET

Minaj made her blockbuster movie debut alongside Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann in the 2014 comedy flick ‘The Other Woman’; a gig she characterises as a “minor sideline” project rather than a breakout. She was praised for her comedic talents playing Diaz’s secretary Lydia at a New York-based law firm wearing three different wigs. “I’m not going to say I’m not focused on acting,” Minaj said, “because I don’t want a director to read this interview and think, Oh, she’s not focused on acting. But it’s not exactly where my heart lies.” Her first foray into acting was voicing the comical character Steffie in ‘Ice Age 4: Continental Drift’ in 2012 and since her big screen debut in ‘The Other Women’ she has dabbled in various roles as a performing artist and/ or writer. She starred in the recent Netflix hit ‘Me Time’ alongside Kevin Hart and Mark Whalberg and in TV show ‘Queens.’

I can only reiterate the remarks of all the other happy people that have commented here. Doug provides a completely different experience from the typical high street estate agent. He is professional – attentive, reliable, always available, and willing to advise and guide. He is also perfectly charming to deal with. I thoroughly recommend him to anyone looking to move. You will be in safe hands.

Doug goes above and beyond! He is truly the best Property Agent you will ever experience and genuinely puts the needs and interests of his clients first. He offers a truly personalised service and is upfront, honest and open from the get-go. Buying and selling in the UK is stressful to say the least but Doug vastly improves the experience by ensuring that there are clear lines of communication at all times so that parties on all sides feel reassured throughout the process. He is always available to answer questions and works around the clock, communicating well into the evening and on the weekend to ensure progress is made in relation to a property transaction. I cannot recommend Doug enough, he is a unique agent in his commitment to getting the best outcomes for his clients. Friendly, professional, open and honest, without him my house purchase would never have happened and I can’t thank him enough!

We would never use anyone else for our sale.

Doug was committed to selling our house from the get go. His enthusiasm for our house never waivered and once we received and accepted the offer he kept everyone happy and was totally involved in the communication between us and our buyer. We would recommend Doug to anyone in the area. His reputation is 100% correct and we are so thankful to him.

What are people saying about Doug Parks after having used his services to buy and sell properties across Esher, Cobham, Weybridge and surrounding areas?

Doug sold us our property 8 years ago and was always someone who stuck in our mind for his honesty and straight talking. He kept the chain together all those years ago - pushing it through and making it happen, therefore we had no hesitation in appointing him again - even though known high street agents were contacting us promising us the world.

Mrs H: Ockham

My mission is simple – it’s to help people as much as I can – to make the home buying and selling process as easy as possible. I’m available 7 days a week and at extended hours. I want my clients to know that they deal with me and only me from valuation to completion. I never forget that I’m dealing with what is usually their biggest financial asset but more importantly it’s their history, their memories and their plans for the future, and that is a responsibility I take very seriously.

Mr & Mrs B: Elmbridge

Doug is the agent you need to go to. His honesty, straightforwardness and communication skills make him the man you need to get the job done. We had a complicated chain and his tenacity and persistence helped push it all through. He also goes above and beyond to get the job done, being “on call” 7 days a week if required.

Self-confidence is something that comes and goes unfortunately. A fact of life... like good days and bad days. Life/death. Black/White. Ying/Yang. If you know this is the pattern that life throws at you then you can overcome bad self-confidence and limit your low days. PUT THE PEP BACK IN YOUR STEP FEATURES 44 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13

BACK FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13 45

T here will be days when you feel on top of the world then time passes and you suddenly feel terrible and in need of self-esteem. But where is it? Unfortunately, we don’t have our own personal cheerleaders reminding us how amazing we are daily (that would be so helpful though); therefore, it is down to you to put the pep back in your step. Or if you can’t - at least fake it till you make it? A tip considered by psychiatrists is to act confident even if you feel low (as hard as it may be) the ensuing result is you are giving off positive vibes and attract positivity from others. If you are feeling on a medium to low energy day ths will boost your positivity as you will be giving off positive vibes. Like attractsSelf-esteemlike. and self-confidence are so closely linked. The way you feel about yourself will determine how you see the world and what you do with it. Low self-esteem often begins in childhood, as family, teachers, friends and the media begin to send you positive and negative messages. However, for some reason, our brains tend to only focus on the negatives. Remember this is how are brains are trained and it will boost you!Genetics also plays a part in self-esteem, as some people are more prone to thinking negatively or putting too much pressure on themselves whereas you can roll the genetic dice and be happy on a day to day basis. Luckily, there are 5 proven methods and techniques that can help you build your confidence.

1.IDENTIFY WHAT YOU’RE GOOD AT

Everyone in the world is good at something, whether it’s dancing, cooking or quoting obscure movie references. No matter how weird you think it might be (btw, it’s not as weird as you think), it’s something you’re good at, which makes it the coolest thing possible. Pretty much all of us are naturally inclined to enjoy doing the things we’re good at, which instinctively helps boost our mood. Make a list of at least five of your talents, and make sure to put it somewhere you can see regularly. That way, you can take a look when you’re having an off day. Remember not to feel ashamed of the things you’re good at; as long as they’re safe, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

2.STOP YOURSELFCOMPARING

Do you find yourself constantly comparing yourself to the people you see on Instagram? The answer to that question is most likely yes. The social comparison theory points out that it’s only natural to compare yourself to others, so when you’re next scrolling through the ‘Gram and comparing yourself to your friend who has the ‘perfect’ life, don’t fret, it’s completely normal. Studies

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 1346 FEATURES

We as humans have a natural negativity bias, which means we are more inclined to focus on our failures and setbacks instead of our successes. Self-confidence is most commonly reduced when you make a mistake, and with the negativity bias, no matter how many great things you do afterwards, you’re still likely to focus on that one mistake. Similar to identifying what you’re good at, there is a simple way to boost your confidence by focusing on your successes. At the end of your day, write down or think about three successful things you did. They can be as big as getting a promotion at work or as small as putting on a dishwasher load on a 1am cycle to save £75% off your electric bill each month. You may have a day where you feel like everything has gone wrong, but even on your worst days, there is still something good to celebrate.Sometimes the small wins are the best, so don’t forget to savour the small accomplishments that make you who you are.

4 MAKE THE MOST OF IT

There are two steps to this self-confidence exercise.

LOUISAPIABY:WORDS SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13 47 FEATURES

3.FOCUS ON YOUR SUCCESSES

Some people think that if you change your outside appearance, your inside mentality follows but in fact, it’s the other way round. Once you work on yourself from the inside, your outsides catch up and shows your new outlook on life. Therefore, this step is likely to come naturally for those who have put the time and effort into boosting their self-confidence from the inside. For those wanting to gain more confidence in their appearance, a great thing to do is focus on something you love about yourself and build on it. Whether you love your legs, nails, or eyebrows, we all have attributes that we love to flaunt! Start by taking care of the one thing you appreciate about your physique and then gradually expand. Your whole mood can be turned around by pampering yourself physically and mentally, but at the end of the day, nothing makes a person look more beautiful than being happy.

‘A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it. It just blooms.’ – Zen Shin.

5.BE HONEST

First, don’t feel ashamed of yourself. Everyone has flaws, and there’s no point wasting your energy trying to hide parts of yourself from the people in your life. Those who truly care about you will love all sides of your personality and accept you, imperfections and all. The second step is being fearlessly honest with yourself. Don’t take this to mean standing in front of a mirror and spouting out all the things you think are wrong with you. Being fearlessly honest is all about speaking truthfully about what you may need to improve on and what you’re amazing at. Everyone deserves honesty, especially from themselves.

The good thing is once you realise you are comparing yourself to others, it makes it a lot easier to stop. Remember, life isn’t a competition. It’s not about being better than anyone else; it’s about being better than the person you used to be. Don’t put yourself under any pressure; you’re doing absolutely fine.

French, Italian, flicked, bottleneck, Botticelli and, of course, the 90’s bob. Another 90’s look from everyone’s most sought-after hair icon is the shoulder kissing style seen on Jennifer Aniston. This is all about movement and bounce. Keeping with the 90’s feel, Jennifer’s long length is fresh and high end. Long hair needs lots of care to look that luxurious and I recommend using Oribe Hair Alchemy Shampoo and Conditioner. It moisturises and restores from within, making hair feel hydrated and strong. Last season we spoke about how the money piece was a popular trend for colour. This season it has evolved to be a little more extreme. Now colour placement has moved to underneath the hair or even stripes of highlights which was first a massive hit with the Spice Girls and All Saints in the mid 90’s. This is the perfect trend to showcase where inspiration comes from and how in the salon we adapt it to create everyday looks for our clients. We have the skill and knowledge to create the two-toned look but also the expertise to customise it for you. Moving into the 2000’s, the red and copper tones rocked by Rihanna in 2k is very much back. This trend has resurfaced alongside others such as the Juicy Couture tracksuit. The first one to change it up was Kendal Jenner for Prada earlier this year and it’s progressed from there. Other celebrities are now following suit for new copper locks such as ITV’s Phoebe Dynevor.

“Men are thankfully beginning to embrace their curls and this trend is massive with guys who have been fighting their curls for too long. The key to keeping this look fresh is a sharp fade that frames the curls on top. Another style coming through for men is a knock-off trend from last year’s mullet. This season the clipper work is cleaner and higher, similar to a mohawk but blended more through the sides to the back,” Andrew Plester, reveals. The 90’s was a strong decade for style. Taking inspiration from that era and developing it for today’s client is something that excites us.

SILENT POOL DISTILLERY TOUR

GASTRONOMY REVIEW

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 1398 W ow, what an experience. A 90-minute tour of the UK’s most famous distillery, Silent Pool Distillers, set against the beautiful backdrop of the meandering SurreyFromHills.themoment we arrived the friendly staff at Silent Pool Distillers in Albury made us feel welcome and at home. The tour started in The Pool Bar where we had a brief outline of what our afternoon was going to be like – from the Silent Pool’s history, distilling process and (of course!) gin tasting. Our Australian tour guide Paul was both hilarious and informative, making us belly laugh at several times throughout the tour. We loved the fact they name certain ingredients such as Kevin the Bergamot Fruit and their stills are called Juliet and her ‘big sister’ Ophelia.

GASTRONOMY REVIEW

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13 99

The history of the Silent Pool is so interesting too. Dating back to Pagan times when women (or witches - as they believed at the time) were sacrificed in the clear, 6-degree waters. A dredging of the Pool in the 1900’s came up with hundreds of items of jewellery and artefacts proving this.

When it gets really interesting is around the time of Richard The Lionheart and the legend of Robin Hood in approximately 1160. A young nobleman called John lived on the land surrounding Albury. He used to hunt in the forests and take the riches of the locals. A young girl called Emma,

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13100 the Woodcutter’s Daughter, used to bathe in the Silent Pool every day and was seen by John who tried to attack her one afternoon. Instead of giving up her modesty, Emma crept further into the pool to hide from him and was sucked under. She sadly drowned trying to escape him.

A few years later, John was crowned King of England following the death of his older brother Richard The Lionheart, and John’s reign of terror started. He has been known throughout history as one of the worst and most evil of Kings. The death of Emma spurred the myth of the Silent Pool even further. Since that fateful day when she innocently went swimming, many people have been to the Silent Pool to try and end their lives in the honourable way Emma did. Innocent and free, rather than be subjected to evil and shame. It wasn’t until respected author Agatha Christie went missing in 1926 that the legend of the Silent Pool resurfaced in the public eye. When Agatha found out her husband Archie was having an affair and was planning to leave her, she abandoned her car near the Silent Pool and disappeared for 13 days. Everyone thought she was dead although she had actually checked into a spa under Archie’s mistresses name in Harrogate! Funny? No. As the whole country suspected at the time of her disappearance that Archie had murdered her. It was then the tables turned on Agatha when the truth of her whereabouts came out. She was castigated by the nation for ‘setting up’ Archie. So again, the Pool got even more press. It was definitely becoming somewhat of a national treasure. To this day the Silent Pool is considered by locals to have special powers and definitely has an eeriness about it. During the tour there were several guests noticeably getting chills down their spine as the talks progressed. It is green to look at with so much moss and foliage at its side. We saw at least 100 turquoise dragonflies

GASTRONOMY REVIEW

So how did the brand come about? Well, in 2014, Silent Pool Gin founders Ian McCulloch and James Shelbourne met in their local pub (where else?!) and discussed the idea of setting up a distillery. The duo started out with a grand vision of making it next to a fresh water source, producing handcrafted, artisan spirits using locally sourced ingredients. But first they needed the perfect location. Most distilleries end up in grim locations or boring industrial estates. Ian and James wanted somewhere filled with history, a good story and plenty of provenance. After scouting many locations in the south of England, one day Ian discovered Sherbourne Farm on the banks of the Silent Pool. Excited by the find, Ian and James contacted the landowner, The Duke of Northumberland, and got the go ahead to restore the dilapidated farm buildings into the Silent PoolAndDistillery.therest as they say is history. Thanks Ian and James!

GIN MAKING (& TESTING!)

ENTREPRENEURS CARRY ON THE LEGEND

Silent Pool Gin is considered one of the UK’s most famous gins and exports around the world to hundreds of countries producing a staggering 45,000 bottles a year. All from Surrey’s infamous Silent Pool.

During the tour, we were able to learn everything about Silent Pool Distiller’s award-winning gin and try five variations. Praise the Lord! (You shot the gin by the way and have a tonic chaser to truly experience the flavour.) Drivers on the day are told to dip their finger and rub on their tongue. We recommend getting a cab! What makes Silent Pool Gin so unique and flavoursome is down to their delicious recipe with a selection of botanicals

including Bosnian juniper berries, liquorice root, cassia bark, orris and bergamot (or Kevin!) which are then bruised and macerated in spirit before being transferred to the still. As Paul was explaining the process, we were able to smell the core ingredients that go into the gin. Heavenly... especially the bitter orange. These key ingredients are what give Silent Pool Gin its unique depth and flavour.

Then we were able to see the gin basket infusion, which hangs in the neck of their Holstein still. Fresh orange and lime peel, dried pears, Macedonian Juniper and Polish Angelica - to name but a few, lift the spirit with bright aromatics and citrus notes.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13102 GASTRONOMY REVIEW

The more delicate botanicals such as rose petals, kaffir lime leaves, linden and elderflower are separately macerated in a process that is called the ‘Gin Tea Infusion’, stripping the oils and aromatic

We also discovered their unique four-stage process allows the distillers to precisely control the quality and flavour of the gin. Interestingly, after the third distilling process, the gin comes out as 86% proof but when mixed with the purified Silent Pool water it drops down to its final 43% volume.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13 103 GASTRONOMY REVIEW compounds from the vegetal matter. This is strained and added to the pot, which lend the gin its ethereal high notes of perfumed lime and floral essence. The distillation process is completed using a multi-chambered fractioning column and through precise control over a series of plates and cooling pipes finally balancing the spirit, ready to be packaged and sent.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13108 LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF – I’M RIA, MUM OF TWO, MARRIED TO MY HANDSOME HUBBY. I’M BORN AND BRED IN MY BELOVED SURREY AND SPEND MOST OF MY TIME BETWEEN HERE AND LONDON. SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13 109 Hi my name is Ria and I’m a mum to two chocoholic, icecream addicts who wake up at approximately 6-6:30am every morning and cannot sit still for more than 5 seconds. Is anyone else grateful for the term starting?! I personally cannot wait, as much as we have had such a fun filled Summer – we are all ready for the kids to go back for some structure and routine. We had the best holiday at IKOS Andalusia. I was a little apprehensive as the allinclusive life is not for me, but I was pleasantly surprised. The IKOS and Sani group prides itself on being a luxury 5 star all inclusive resort with ultracool Mediterranean style, and it certainly was that. The children had 3 hours of kids club every morning which meant that my husband and I could relax by the adults only pool every morning. The adults only pool is located next to the spa (handy), amongst a row of lavender giving off a wonderfully relaxing scent. I was able to read my book in peace whilst sipping on my iced freddo cappuccino in our private cabana… until 1 ‘o clock where we were back to ordering chicken nuggets and chips with the sound of screaming children in the background. The food was delicious in all of the restaurants and the service was second to none. You know it’s good when you don’t have to look for someone to order a drink, they are just there! Being holiday ready is so important to me. It gives me confidence and ensures that I can spend minimal time getting ready when I am at my destination. I’m all about the effortless look these days (although this still take a lot of effort).

LUXURIOUS HIDDEN GEMS

Apart from hair, nails and fake tan, the biggest difference for me is getting my eyebrows done. I have been to many places in Surrey and by the far the best is Lucy Mia in Reigate. She creates the perfect shape which is natural, fluffy and filled. I look back at the old me and cringe remembering how I used to overzealously pluck my brows. Thank goodness for my Greek genes which enabled my hairs to grow back. Before a holiday I usually see Lucy for a lash lift (LVL) which means I don’t wear any mascara during the day, and a brow shape, tint and lamination which gives me the perfect fluffy, sculpted brows.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13110

I wanted to share with you a couple of hidden gems that I visited during the holidays and I will continue to visit throughout the year (weather permitting). Firstly, The Pilots Hub where you dine whilst watching aircrafts to offer a complete aviation experience. The Hub is part of a large aviation company that operates on Redhill aerodrome. I came here with some friends during lockdown when we could only dine outdoors and thought it was genius for both children and adults. Not only does it provide fantastic entertainment, but the food is great. My favourite is to go for brunch and order the avocado on sourdough which is topped with chilli oil, roasted vine tomatoes and sourSeasonscream. Surrey is another hidden gem. It’s situated in Lavershot Barns which is a luxury home, lifestyle, garden, dining and retail estate in Windlesham. They have an aquatics shop, a Lakeland, Surrey Hills Butchers and Afters frozen yoghurt to name a few. Seasons has two dining options including the Kitchen, which serves seasonal and modern food, and Street Food, which is outdoors and more of a laidback atmosphere serving delicious Asian inspired street food and craft cocktails. I ate at Street Food as it was a gloriously sunny day. The food was utterly scrumptious, the halloumi fries were totally addictive and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was buzzing it almost felt like I was back on holiday! On the way out I couldn’t help but to check out the Farm Shop where I picked up some delectable burrata and truffle filled tortellini. Watch out for fun filled family events that will be held at Lavershot Barns – including some upcoming Halloween fun! Seasons Surrey is definitely one way to banish those end of Summer blues and I cannot wait to come back.

Well, if you are single and reading this then you are in luck. If you are in a relationship and you are unhappy, then you are also in luck. I am so happy to join the Rocks Mag family and help solve all your dating and relationship issues. I want to bring you hope that you can still find true love... I want to give you confidence to get out there and meet a partner. Ultimately, I want you to be happy! And each month with Surrey Rocks I am hoping I can help make that happen for you.

Tinder has just celebrated their 10-year anniversary and with thousands of marriages (and divorces) under their belt is online dating reallyWhereworking?dopeople meet ‘decent people’ these days?!!!

Here are some basics that I don’t want you to forget though. I will be elaborating on each point over the next few months but remember these five key things and you will be well on your way to finding true happiness:

LOVE & DATING TIPS

Follow me on Instagram to say hi @ladynadiaessex

5. You only have one life and you are more in control than you think. You may have had some bad things happen, life may have thrown you a few curve balls and you may have had to pick yourself up from the gutter more times than most people, but you deserve happiness. You are not a bad person. You deserve true love AND to be happy. So make sure you keep the faith. Join me next month for more insights into the crazy world of love and dating.

1. Never ever lower your standards. You are not ‘Too Picky’, you are not ‘Too Much’, you are not ‘Too Emotional’ and you are not ‘Too Sensitive’. The right person will love every single part of you because of who you are, not in spite of it.

2. The Red Flags you ignore at the beginning of the relationship are the reason you will break up in the end by the way! This is unfortunately the tried and tested truth of the matter. Make sure you keep your radar on and don’t paint the Red Flags ‘White’ just because you really like someone.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 13114

4. Don’t have sex on the first date. Your private parts are 1 in 8 billion. Imagine if you had a piece of art that was 1 in 8 billion, it would be priceless, well so is sex with you. Make them work for it. You are special and you will never regret not sleeping with someone and making them wait. If they disappear? Good. They were not worthy of you anyway!

3. People only treat you how you let them. Setting boundaries is super important, especially at the beginning. Know what boundaries you want to hold firm and stick to them. For example, you won’t sleep with them until they are off all dating apps and are exclusive, you expect a text reply within 24 hours, no phones at dinner. Take some time to think about what is important to you and don’t budge. If you lose someone or they make you feel guilty for holding firm - they are not the right person for you.

Three of Swords

Three of Pentacles

The Three of Swords is most commonly known as the card of heartbreak. This can be romantic, friendship or familial; but overall, it is saying that some form of emotional pain is making life a bit tougher at the moment. Know that the sorrow you are feeling is going to pass and that there are brighter times on the horizon. Having the Three of Swords as your main card for this month shows just how strong this grief is right now, however, the cards surrounding it are positive, so there is still lots of hope. Don’t let this hurt stop you from living your life. I know it’s easier said than done, but there is so much more waiting for you. There may be hurdles to overcome in September, but they’re nothing you can’t handle.

The Three of Pentacles is showing that teamwork is going to be of the utmost importance in September. Whether you need help at work or at home, asking for support is going to get you much further than working alone. Collaborate with people you trust and bounce ideas off each other. Learn from the mistakes of your past and have faith in your abilities. Both cards in your reading so far are threes. In Tarot, threes mean creativity and growth and also represent people coming together to achieve a common goal. Creative solutions are going to solve your problems in September.

Let’s find out what september will bring for you!

By Pia Louisa

Oracle Card Oracle cards are a tool of self-reflection and give extra insight into your tarot reading. Depending on the deck, oracle cards can help develop feelings of self-love, intuition and emotional well-being. Your oracle card for September is ‘Illumination’. When you get this card, imagine yourself turning on a light in a dark room. There was so much you were unaware of, but now you are finally seeing things for what they are. Previous experiences may have made you feel scared, lonely and wondering what to do next. However, this card is saying that you have gained wisdom over time and can now approach any new situations with greater knowledge and ease. September is likely to be a month of self-actualisation, with you being able to look at your life with fresh eyes.

Knight of Cups

The Knight of Cups is a beautiful card to end on, as it is a big contradiction to the Three of Swords. This card is all about creativity and following your heart. Romance is a big theme here and combined with the other cards in the reading shows that the heartbreak you are feeling won’t last long as new romance is making its way to you. Use your wits to charm those around you and remember to have fun. Overall, this reading is showing that although you may be going through a tough time right now, getting help from others and listening to your heart will get you through it.

HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO LAND YOUR FIRST PRESENTING GIG AGED ONLY 18? I was a budding writer in Canada and I contacted Radio Luxemberg out of the blue when I saw an opening, sent them my articles, then sold my motorbike to afford my flight to go there and take up the position.

WHAT ARE HIGHLIGHTS AND PITFALLS OF BEING A RADIO DJ? It’s usually a lot of fun and it never really feels like you’re working. You get voted for with Ofcom/Ofgen ratings in radio so it reminds me of politics where you are always up against the polls! So the pitfalls are probably that you are “always on show” and that can turn instantly and just like politicians you fall out of favour. We have to make music sound exciting - but you also have to be true to your listeners. So it’s a hard balancing act.

Definitely interviewing Carlos Santana at the Rock in Rio Festival in the 80’s. He’s a great artist, great person and I genuinely really loved spending time with him. There’s lots of people that listen to our shows and the friendly vibe you get from interviewing someone like Carlos cannot be faked or replicated. Van Morrisson was a challenging one to interview! One of my favourite artists but not so easy on air!

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CAREER MOMENT?

WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING CONSIDERED ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS RADIO DJ’S? It is amazing! There have been a lot of years of toll and trouble to get here. It’s partly to do with luck and also through my own endeavours – having the best friends and great family behind me too helps. It’s as tough as footballers getting into the Premiership to get into radio presenting these days!

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST EVER SHOW? Anything with John Peel was good, relaxing and he always understood the context of what we were doing. Roger Scott was tremendous; a terrific radio voice and way of communicating. Kenny Everett was one of the loveliest people you’d ever hope to meet. He gave me a filofax one day - hinting at my disorganisation! One day in the studio, shortly after his diagnosis, he turned to me putting his hands in the Lord’s prayer position, saying: “I have got something to ask you and I want to know your honest opinion.” He then said, “I am just rehearsing for the big guy. How did I do?!” He had the greatest spirit and was such a funny guy. Even towards the end he kept a smile on his face. Alan Freeman was always good value too.

YOU MUST HAVE INTERVIEWED ALL THE POP GREATS – WHO WAS THE BEST & WHY? The Rolling Stones, the whole band, I was invited to travel with them on their 1976 tour. It was completely hedonistic. It is all in my book which is a must read:

WHAT ABOUT THE ACTS YOU BROKE? Duran Duran were always friendly and very good value. ‘Ordinary World’ is a beautiful track as is their lesserknown song ‘Skin Trade’. Sting and The Police were grateful for my exposure. Simple Minds similarly – they loved my interviews. Steve Winwood, Jolie Mitchell and Carlos Santana are still lifelong friends.

WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING THAT’S HAPPENED TO YOU AS A PRESENTER? Doing a huge show in London at the Royal Albert Hall with Led Zeppelin headlining alongside The Pretenders and The Pop Proms among others - I was put in big lights above Led Zeppelin so it looked like they were supporting me. Still makes me laugh! Led Zeppelin as my support act!!

I have introduced and participated in Esher Theatre’s Q&A with Mick Jagger’s younger brother earlier this year – a great show. It’s one of my favourite spaces. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE GENRE OF MUSIC? I am a lifelong jazz fan – growing up in Canada it reminds me of my Dad and my youth. IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Saxophone, good books and my darling wife Gudrun. (she is present at the interview btw!) WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS? Carlos Santana, Miles Davis, Kenny Everett and John Peel. BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN?

YOU WENT PUBLIC WITH YOUR PARKINSON’S DIAGNOSIS IN 2018, HOW DID YOU FIND THE PUBLIC REACTION? Very sympathetic, loving, considerate. People would come out and help me. It showed me the human spirit... exemplified! David is an ambassador for Parkinsons UK and has a top hat in Queens Square and raises thousands for the charity as an ambassador.

SURREYROCKS ISSUE

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? To keep on breathing!

David ‘Kid’ Jensen earned his name because he was the youngest radio presenter in Europe in the sixties aged only 18! He has kept this nickname throughout his illustrious career as a DJ on BBC Radio 1, Capital Radio, Heart, Jazz FM and Boom Radio as well as presenting slots on BBC’s ‘Top of the Pops’, ITV, ITN and Sky News. Kid has been at the forefront of music for a staggering 55 years now and has helped break bands including Duran Duran and The Police. He currently resides in Surrey with his wife Gudrun and they have 2 grown up sons and 7 grandchildren. You can catch Kid Jensen at Esher Theatre for his upcoming Kid Jensen Presents series scheduled for October 22nd and November 4th.

PRESENTS” IS BILLED AS ONE OF THE TOP SHOWS AT ESHER THEATRE? So excited about this. I love Esher Theatre, Charlie Swift (the owner) and all the organisers. This is going to be a great show that I will present - showcasing upcoming top musical acts. DO YOU LIKE PERFORMING THERE?

BEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN SURREY. You are not too far from London but still have all the beautiful countryside. We have also had so much support from the Surrey local community - we couldn’t be happier living here. Check out Kid Jensen Presents at Esher Theatre this www.eshertheatre.com/Autumn:whatson

(SURREY ROCKS INTERJECTS – Thanks Paul, we are doing just that!) When pressing Kid he said he did talk about himself as the more famous he got! It wasn’t just interviews it was chats with bands he made friends with).

Paul McCartney standing in a car park in Gillingham in the 70’s, said to me: “I want to give you some advice: If I was you, I would consider talking more about you on the radio. I like you but have realised I don’t much about you! I want to know more! So do all the listeners.”
