What to Expect ...And
November

Note from Self Connect. Support. Grow

It takes a village to provide care for the frail and the ailing among us. The Caregivers e-Resource connects caregivers to this 'village'.

Marcus Aurelius, to whom the above quote is attributed, sounds like he was a get-it-done type of person

This month, a small army of men stood up to champion and support a cause that will benefit deserving men The cause I make mention of, is the Adopt-A-Caregiver fund This fund allows for caregivers who need counselling support but whose finances are strained by the caregiving need to access therapy Every three months we dedicate the proceeds of this fund to a segment of caregivers For Movember November, the beneficiaries will be male caregivers

So my note this month is a big thank you to this small army On behalf of every man who will have hope restored, and resilience rebuilt, THANK YOU!

For anyone who wants to be part of this campaign please click on https://suruvi.co.ke/adopt-a-caregiver/

Every month we feature activities, products and services that guide caregivers on where they can get the support that is appropriate for their context.

The caregivers e-Resource offers a wide range of resources, including articles, tips, and advice on caregiving It also offers support groups and forums where caregivers can connect with one another and share experiences

This month we joined the larger world in celebrating Movember November We focused our activities on raising awareness and support for men ’ s mental wellness. We aimed to challenge the status quo by inspiring men and women to support open and honest conversations about men's health We invite male caregivers to participate more openly in discussing their health and significant moments in their lives. Let us make the ‘Mo-mentary mark’ together.

We invite you,our readers to be part of bringing the village together for caregivers by; Together we can grow and nurture a supportive environment for people providing care to others

Our heartfelt appreciation to all current contributors to the production of the Caregiver's e-Resource.

WASTE NO MORE TIME ARGUING ABOUT WHAT A GOOD MAN SHOULD BE. BE ONE.

HIGHLIGHTS

Statistics show that men are underrepresented in the world of caregiving However, this does not imply that their influence is limited Our guests from the GLC centre share their experience of being caregivers and being cared for when they were at very vulnerable points in their lives.

Suruvi - Care for Caregivers provides education and conversation spaces to support family and professional caregivers' emotional and mental wellness. Our Facebook Live broadcasts with experts to support this objective.

It is our pleasure to invite you as one of our guests to hold a conversation on any one of these aspects of selfcare:

Spiritual self-care

Making a career of it; How to brand yourself as a professional caregiver

Adjusting into and out of the caregiving role Home modifications and adjustments

Institutions of care (eg old people's homes)

- CARE FOR CAREGIVERS

Each time we provide care, we learn valuable lessons and gain new perspectives that could help another caregiver who is having a difficult time.

There is potential for many more caregiver stories, which we have already shared on our website For privacy reasons, some carers require that we change their names, but others are fine with us disclosing their true identities. In either case, we are okay We concentrate on the lessons and 'wisdoms' found there.

No tale is too commonplace or too controversial for us to relate. We are not searching for extraordinary or interesting stories to share. We are seeking genuine, in-person encounters

Solomon started drinking at 14 years of age and recalls his struggles as a homeless person for years due to alcoholism. Attempting to end his life at one point, after having a prodigal son moment visiting home and finding everything he had known had changed to a point his younger brother could hardly recognize him.

Solomon's drinking habit stretched out through his teenage years and caught up with him as an adult As he sank deeper and deeper into his addiction it led to his economic decline from sleeping in lodgings that cost Ksh 60 to having to share one for Ksh 30 until he couldn't afford one and later found himself in the streets

Homelessness is a challenge facing a growing number of men in Kenya. Some find themselves there as a result of the primary consequences of their actions or by the failure of child welfare. Lucky for Solomon, his life story changed and another purpose awaited him His became a story of hope among the many untold stories out there of men ’ s struggles, especially homeless men.

cleaning up As with caregivers everywhere, these caregivers require psychological support services for their own wellness. This will keep their emotional resources well able-to support the needs of the residents in their care. Suruvi-Care for Caregivers is enabled by funds from the "Adopt-a-Caregiver" campaign to hold therapeutic conversations with them. The readers' generosity in this fund really, is translated to social impact for the community of rehabilitated men

ARE YOU THE NEXT

Suruvi - Care for Caregivers initiated its operations in the year 2020 when Kenya and the world were caught in the COVID-19 death grip.

An outcome of holding weekly online mental wellness sessions and, broadcasts on FB for caregivers, was the realization that caregivers needed more intense interactions with mental health practitioners but they couldn't afford this service. This necessitated the launch of adopt-a-caregiver campaigns to fund the provision of individual therapy sessions, and workshops to caregivers To date, we have provided individual therapy sessions to tens of family caregivers and hold online and in-person workshops with trained caregivers Their testimonials have been highlighted on our social media platforms. We aim to reach many more caregivers with this service and this becomes your opportunity to cause a positive social impact with us.

Our benefactors have been individuals and small/medium businesses that recognize the rigours of caregiving and acknowledge the need for mental wellness support for caregivers. They have given their support in cash and in-kind for the benefit of caregivers' wellness support and together we are recreating a more supportive caregiver infrastructure.

CARE FOR THE CAREGIVER

gives care to another member of the family who es. It could be a parent, sibling, child or spouse g ebilitating disease or living with a disability. Family caregivers are unpaid and more often than not they are not professionally trained for the caregiving role Categories of family caregivers include:

a) Primary caregiver: This is a family member who takes the most active role in caregiving. They often help with activities like personal hygiene, dressing, movement, cooking and feeding the care recipient They may also manage the care recipient’s hospital appointments and taking of medication. In addition, this same person will most likely also be involved in full-time employment, regular housework, shopping and generally managing the homestead.

b) Nearby caregiver: This is a family member who lives less than 1 hour away from their care recipient and may be in a position to provide support with some of the day-to-day caregiving tasks.

c) Distant caregiver: This is a family member who lives far away from the care recipient. A distant caregiver will usually provide emotional support to the primary caregiver and the care recipient.

d) Alpha caregiver: This is a family member who is often the final decision-maker on how family caregiving will be provided Often but not always, they are not personally involved with the day-to-day caregiving tasks. Their influences mainly result from cultural influence, their position of birth, their financial capability or their personality

It is possible for a caregiver to find themselves falling into more than one of the categories above.

Do you identify with any one of these categories? Let us know which one it is.

CAREGIVER

Dear healthcare support provider, we applaud you and affirm the demonstrated willingness to help families care for their frail and ailing at home. However, these families do not know how to reach you. Please believe what we say to you, that many of them do not want their contacts shared in groups for you to get them. They would rather reach out to you instead. BE SEEN, GET PAID WORK

Self-care for Caregivers

Do you have any questions or queries? Any suggestions of what you would like to read in our eResource?

Let us know on admin@suruvi co ke

To every caregiver who is struggling with letting go this is for you. We at Suruvi - Care for Caregivers encourage you to keep growing, keep learning, and stay connected to those who support you.

Comes A Dawn by Jorge Luis Borges

After a while, you learn a subtle difference Between holding a hand and chaining a soul.

And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning And company doesn’t mean security

And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts And presents aren’t promises.

And you begin to accept your defeats With your head held up and your eyes wide open, With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child.

And you learn to build all your roads for today, because tomorrow’s ground is uncertain for plans, and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while, you learn that even sunshine hurts when you get too much.

So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

If this newsletter has been a value add for you, support our work and caregivers by sharing it with your contacts.

And you learn that you really can endure, and that you really are strong, and that you really do have worth

And you learn and learn with every goodbye, you learn!
