A Sixteen-Year-Old Son
Y
esterday was my son’s 16th birthday. Peyton’s the middle child and we’ve crossed these types of milestones before, but it’s still a unique experience. We’ve been his personal taxi driver for years. Sure, it gets old driving him from school to practice and then to another practice, but at the end of the day we really do enjoy it. But that is all about to change. Tomorrow he takes his driver’s test. Fingers crossed. For his birthday party, my son decided that he wanted to invite some of his friends over to the house to hang and then go out to dinner at a “fun” restaurant. We limited the number to 10 and set the location for Gen Korean BBQ – a fun all-you-can-eat restaurant in Mira Mesa where you grill your own food at the table. Peyton is now at that age where some of his friends are driving and others will be driving soon. The non-drivers loaded up into our cars and the legal drivers decided to take their own wheels to the restaurant (even though we had plenty of seats in our cars). Apparently driving more cars than needed is just what you do when you get your license. The freedom of the road. Independence! With a party of 12 (yep, mom and dad tagged along to hang out and pay the bill), we had a blast eating all types of Korean meat. Peyton’s friends gave the menu a run for its money! And the restaurant staff was great in announcing his birthday over the microphone to the entire restaurant. It was a perfect birthday dinner. The night couldn’t end without a trip to the local ice cream shop. We loaded up our caravan of cars and invaded Baskin Robbins. The kids were a bit loud and playing around in the store. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. We all ordered our treats and decided to eat in the car since it was getting late. And that’s when something special happened. An older gentleman and his wife followed us out of Baskin Robbins and knocked on my car window just before I was about to back out of the parking spot. Not knowing what he was about to say (after all, the kids were a bit of a hurricane inside Baskin Robbins), I rolled down my window and braced myself. He said, “My wife and I just wanted you to know how special it is to see two parents spending time with their kids and their friends like you are doing.” I thanked him for going out of his way to let me know their thoughts. I spent the next 20 minutes on the drive home thinking about the man’s words. The night was definitely special. And I’m thankful that he took the time to share his thoughts with me. It would have been easier for him to not knock on my window in the parking lot. But in doing so, his words encouraged me to reflect and take it all in. Thank you, sir, for going out of your way. It was a good night with good friends. Happy birthday, Peyton! Thanks for being you.

“Determination is exactly what you need to chase your dreams.”

ACTOR, ATHLETE, AND ACADEMIC

E
ven at the young age of 13, Max Leadley, a seventh grade honor roll student at The Nativity School in Rancho Santa Fe, has proven he can accomplish whatever goal he sets for himself. With a number of acting roles under his belt, such as Peter Pan, the Artful Dodger in Oliver!, Pumbaa in The Lion King Jr., and Alex the Lion in Madagascar Jr., it wasn’t until he decided to audition for the role of Buddy the Elf in the Trinity Theatre Company’s production of Elf Junior that Max truly strove for what he wanted. Max recalled, “Buddy became a dream role for me, so I found a theater company that was putting on the show. I prepared for my callback and audition non-stop by watching Elf the movie and various stage productions on YouTube, as well as working with my vocal coach, Brandon Sherman, on character exercises and songs from the show. Determination is exactly what you need to chase your dreams.” After being cast as Buddy, Max continued to hone his acting skills to master the nuances of the character. He explained, “Playing Buddy was not only mentally and physically challenging, but also vocally demanding. I grew so much as an actor, singer, and overall performer while learning such an amazing role.” Though Max is open about participating in theater, he thinks he might not appear that way at first glance, as he is also an athlete. “I’m unsure if I would go with a theater kid who plays sports or an athlete who acts, but I do love both.” Max plays water polo for Pacific Polo and football and basketball at Nativity. In addition to acting and sports, Max is on the Academic Decathlon team and leadership council at his school, takes lessons in voice, guitar, and ukulele, and writes scripts and songs. On top of all this, Max also gives back to the community through Teen Volunteers in Action. “I try to keep balance in my life and enjoy participating in lots of different activities,” he smiled. In the future, Max wants to act on Broadway, but he also plans to study law at Harvard. He professed, “Acting is my biggest dream, but I am also fascinated by the law. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get my law degree and also perform on either Broadway or on the big screen!” ¢

H
arbaugh Seaside Trails, the threeacre coastal overlook linking Cardiff-bythe-Sea and Solana Beach, is now officially open to the public and accessible for hiking, wildlife photography, dog walking, and peaceful contemplation in nature, following a special grand opening celebration in February. The trails feature a wave-shaped walking trail, spectacular ocean views from the shell-shaped observation deck, over 8,000 native plants that represent four Southern California coastal habitats, and the donor monument designed by artist Betsy Schulz with lagoon wildlife-themed mosaics, uniting the Coastal Rail Trail art theme. Once slated for development for many years, the land was secured by Nature Collective, made possible by a $1.15 million gift from The Harbaugh Foundation, and is now designated permanent open space, open daily from sunrise to sunset. “We saved these views together!” said Doug Gibson, Nature Collective Executive Director. “Today we celebrate – and generations will cherish what we refused to lose for our collective love of nature and community.” Harbaugh Seaside Trails is named in honor of the late George and Betty Harbaugh, San Diego philanthropists who directed their estate planning to benefit nature and community. “It has been an honor and privilege to work with Nature Collective and our community to preserve this amazing property and to make it accessible now and for future generations,” said Harbaugh Foundation Director Joe Balla. Nature Collective will host guided Sunset View Tours of Harbaugh Seaside Trails on March 12 and March 18, where visitors can learn more about the history of the property and experience its natural beauty firsthand. STUDIO WEST T
he Recording Arts Center at Studio West is pleased to announce that the year-long Diploma in Recording Arts program has been approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for VA funds. This means that The Recording Arts Center can continue to proudly serve veterans with the added benefit of funding support for the program. While the lack of fund support has not stopped veterans from joining the Diploma program in the past, now the Studio is able to better support a wider range of vets in starting a career in the field of audio engineering. “The approval by the VA’s office is a wonderful benefit that we are extremely pleased to offer our veteran students,” Peter Dyson, owner of Studio West, said in a recent interview. “The Diploma in
Recording Arts imparts so much useful knowledge and skill building that it has been a great way for our graduates to start a new career. That we are now able to offer it to more veterans with the support of their VA funds is amazing.” With the majority of eligible graduates and alumni using their knowledge to pursue a career, the year-long Diploma program offers a solid foundation for audio engineers. Classes are held in a worldclass studio and offer participants the chance to get hands-on experience in a professional environment. To learn more about joining the
program, with or without VA funds, please contact Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admission, at todd@StudioWest.com or 858-592-9497. More information can also be found at www.StudioWest.com. ¢

Annie Dunne Advocates for the Health of Humans and the Planet
A
nnie Dunne is a true Renaissance woman. She is the president of Araim Pharmaceuticals and a passionate artist, volunteer, philanthropist, and traveler. “I am happier when I am involved,” Annie said. “I feel that involvement equals fun and connection. My whole perspective changes when I am part of actions that are outside of my tiny world.” Annie’s educational background is in design and marketing, and she has always been an artist. She started out painting in large format, but currently creates mostly collages. “I photograph the collages, print them on silk with a poem or story I’ve written, and give them to special people in my life. I’m ready to explode into more artistic creativity when I have time,” she revealed. Annie is very involved in two local organizations: Sage Garden Project and Nature Collective. Annie created Sage Garden Project, named after her daughter Sage, with her best friend, Dawn Mayeda, in 2010. The goal of the project is to offer experiential learning in a garden and kitchen for local elementary school children. “When learners grow and cook food, they are excited to try just about anything. We help children embrace healthier food choices,” explained Annie. The program supports Solana Vista and Skyline Elementary Schools in Solana Beach, while the pilot program operates at Ocean Knoll Elementary in Encinitas. Sage Garden Project also now has an original curriculum that supports grade-level standards with 62 schools in California. Nature Collective is a nonprofit organization that stewards local land and believes that if a person falls in love with nature, they will protect and preserve it. Annie’s Canyon Trail is named after Annie, an honor that both gives her great pride and humbles her. “Through financial support, the help of a host of volunteers, and a dedicated Eagle Scout, we created a special place for everyone – big, small, young, old, near, and far – to experience and connect to nature,” Annie smiled. To make an impact on a more global level, Annie serves on the board of Nature and Culture International, an organization based in Del Mar that works with Latin American communities to protect and conserve biodiversity. “I was astonished to learn that this nonprofit is based in our own backyard and has created over 20 million acres of protected areas in South America and Mexico since 1996,” she shared. “I joined the board in 2019 and am honored to be a part of saving the most diverse, complex, and beautiful ecosystems on earth.” Even further, Annie and her husband run a foundation, The Anthony Cerami and Ann Dunne Foundation for World Health, that focuses on human health and the health of the planet and all species. Annie is also an exuberant traveler. She has lived in Italy, where she started a cooking school, and still has a home in the Netherlands, which she and Anthony use as a base to see Europe and Africa. “Next on my list is Egypt,” she exclaimed. “They are reopening the Egyptian Museum this year and it’s supposed to be incredible!” ¢

The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CodeREV Kids
W
ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education and preparing students for their future by getting them excited about using math, logic, and science. he Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA (Ecke YMCA) is gearing up for another fantastic summer, with over 140 different camp offerings for campers ages 5 to 17. Camps are offered in nine categories: traditional, animal, aquatic, specialty, educational, sports, itty-bitty, and Teen. Camp officially runs from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. – though before and aftercare is available. The Ecke YMCA prides itself on a focus of safety, fun, and building relationships. Parents and guardians can rest assured knowing that the camp management team has a combined 75 years of camp experience, and camp leaders receive 30 hours of training, with unit leaders receiving 60, ensuring the safest environment for all participants and staff. All camps are accredited by the American Camp Association. The Ecke YMCA takes full advantage of the fun San Diego has to offer. They visit San Diego staples such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, and Legoland, as well as local beaches up and down the coast. They also have a one-of-a-kind aquatic park at their Carlsbad Lagoon site, where campers can do everything from kayaking, paddleboarding, jumping on the water trampoline, sliding down water slides, and launching off the blob. This unique setting is home to one of the YMCA’s most popular camps, CAMP H2O. Camp Director Krista Russell explained, “We partner with many local organizations who share a similar mission to the YMCA of San Diego. These include Coastal Roots Farm, Junior Achievement of San Diego County, local parks, and beaches, as well as multiple schools in the area.” Camps such as VolunTeen and Leaders in Training provide volunteer services to the community. BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES Reunite With Nature This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
W
ith the early vernal equinox this year (March 19), signs of spring are beginning to emerge in San Diego. You might notice the days getting slightly longer, flowers blooming from the earth, and animals and insects becoming more active – including butterflies! We’ve rounded up a few fun ways to learn more about these colorful creatures and welcome the official arrival of the season. ¢
BUTTERFLY JUNGLE March 21 – May 10 Open daily, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. This popular exhibit at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a magical experience for children and adults alike. Get up close and personal as thousands of dazzling butterflies flit, float, and flutter around you inside the tropical jungle habitat. Visitors wearing bright colors may even find a butterfly perching on them! www.sdzsafaripark.org
GARDENING FOR BUTTERFLIES
ANNUAL BUTTERFLY RELEASE
April 4 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
May 23 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Butterfly Farms is a nonprofit in Encinitas that focuses on native butterfly education, conservation, and research. Their free-flight butterfly vivarium is open to the public every day from April through November, and they also host a variety of events throughout the year. Learn from butterfly gardening experts about how to create a garden habitat for butterflies and other pollinators in their Butterfly Gardening 101 workshop on April 4.
With plenty of nectar-rich plants and hiding spots within the rocks, Balboa Park’s Zoro Garden (also called Butterfly Garden) is the perfect place for caterpillars to safely complete their life cycle into butterflies. Each year, Friends of Balboa Park has been celebrating the beginning of spring with the Butterfly Release, bringing in 400 live painted lady butterflies to encourage pollination throughout the park. Mark your calendars for this fun and free event!
