Situated on the South East coast of England, Sussex Coast College Hastings has been welcoming students from around the world for over 30 years. The college is proud to educate and train over 2,000 full-time, 5,000 part-time and 500 international learners each year, providing them with high quality teaching in a relaxed, comfortable environment, where making friends is easy. The Station Plaza building, which sits next to Hastings train station, is an impressive 5-storey building, dominated by a light-filled atrium. The beautifully designed airy space is a real focal-point of the campus often used by students to exhibit work and put on pop-up events. 1066 Country still maintains its ancient charm and character with bars, cafes and restaurants in Hastings old town, as well as Battle Abbey just a few miles away. Hastings has excellent transport links including fast, direct trains to nearby Brighton,Ashford International, and London. Gatwick Airport and St Pancras International train station are less than two hours away, providing travel to the rest of Europe and beyond. The huge stretch of beach is a hive of activity in summer months and is home to one of only a few remaining beach launched fishing fleets in the UK.

The town hosts its very own version of Mardi Gras, which they like to call Fat Tuesday, each February, along with May Day, Pirate Day, Bonfire and Carnival celebrations amongst others. ACCESS COURSES

This course is perfect for those who are 19 years or older and don’t have existing qualifications that allow you to study in the UK. It only takes one year to complete, and is a direct route to university in the UK for mature students. Art If you’re looking to study Art and Design at university, this access course is the perfect stepping stone, giving you all the preparation you need. You will explore a range of specialisms and processes. As you get further into the course you’ll be able to develop your own style while learning about, and gaining inspiration from other artists and designers. Once you complete the course you’ll gain the confidence to apply to many of the top universities in the country.

Once you have successfully completed this course, you will be able to apply for degrees in General Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Paramedic Training, and Radiography.

Taught across a range of subjects, students will study core units in Humanities and Social Sciences. Once completed, students will have a strong grounding in critical thinking and study skills.

Study skills and a reflective diary are essential and it is highly desirable for applicants to be working in a hospital or care environment, in paid or regular voluntary capacity.

ENGLISH PLUS

Enjoy 22 hours of study per week, learning English while studying your choice of A-Level or Vocational subjects. Our English Plus programme can give you an authentic British study experience, with 16 hours of English tuition, and 6 hours of academic or vocational study a week. You can choose between enhancing your academic study skills in a range of our A-Level subjects, or choose to learn in our practical and realistic working environments with our vocational subjects. You will join current Sussex Coast College students during their lessons and be grouped with other visiting students who have a similar level of English as you. Our campuses are home to modern facilities. We have IT suites and modern classrooms, as well as Learning Resource Centres at our Station Plaza and Ore Valley campuses, all designed to help you develop your English.

What we can offer you? • A-Level Study Plus -Along with our 16 hours of English tuition, you can choose to study a number of A-Level subjects including: Art & Design, Biology, Business, French, History, Maths, Physics and many more. •

General English and Cambridge Examinations -16 hours a week We will assess your current level and improve your English skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. All General English courses are taught using the Cambridge syllabus leading to PET, KET, FCE, and CAE. Students will be entered for the Cambridge exam if requested, taken at Sussex Coast College Hastings. This Cambridge qualification is recognised internationally and trusted by over 20,000 organisations world wide. Our courses range from elementary to advanced level.

General English ‘Plus’ and Cambridge Examinations - 22 hours a week

Choose this General English course option to give extra focus to IELTS preparation, listening and speaking. All General English courses are taught using the Cambridge syllabus PET, KET and FCE, students will be entered for the exam if requested.

SUMMER SCHOOL Visit our website

Learn English in the morning and enjoy a busy programme of trips, sports and culture in the afternoon and evening.

What we can offer you:

We have courses for everyone, from beginner to advanced, with the option of doing 16 or 22 hours of English each week. Teaching is fun and interesting and will improve your vocabulary, fluency and grammar. We aim to provide a fully rounded experience that reinforces what you learn in the classroom. Your host will support and enhance your English and we will provide activities to add to your learning and understanding of British culture. Summer School courses last for a minimum of two weeks and run from June to September. We welcome people aged 16+, or aged 14 in an organised group with an adult leader. All group activity programmes for our Summer School are organised and run by our local partners, and need to be booked in advance.

Sussex Coast College Hastings runs in conjunction with the University of Brighton and Edexcel to deliver Degree and other Higher Education courses.

What is Higher Education? Higher Education is the stage that follows Further Education and is generally offered at a college or university. These courses are spread over two or three years for full-time students, or longer if you select a part-time pathway.

What we can offer you: Hastings is a very attractive place to study. There are many local events and a quirky, lively, community-focused atmosphere. Our Higher Education students regularly win national and international awards, gain excellent work experience and find employment in relevant professional sectors. We offer quality student accommodation, available across the town. We offer these qualifications: Higher National Certificate (HNC) - equivalent to one year of an National Diploma, usually undertaken on a part-time basis and is appropriate for students who are working in the industry. Higher National Certificate (HNC) - equivalent to one year of a National Diploma, usually undertaken on a part-time basis and is appropriate for students who are working in the industry. Higher National Diploma (HND) - a modular vocational qualification, usually run over two years with no exams. An HND is equivalent to two years of a degree. What we can offer you: Our level 3 diplomas are two-year, pre-university courses and are equivalent to three A-Levels. Sussex Coast College Hastings provides the following services to support international students during their stay with us:

College Open times:

Sussex Coast College Hastings is manned on Monday to Friday from 06:30 to 21:00. Saturday: 08:30 to 16:00 & Sunday: 10:30 to 14:00.

International Welfare and Accommodation Officer:

Sussex Coast College Hastings has a well-established and highly experienced accommodation and welfare officer who provides help and support from the beginning of your stay to ensure that you are comfortable and safe in your chosen accommodation. The services provided by the accommodation and welfare officer include: • • • • •

Helping to secure your visas and booking your chosen accommodation Arranging your airport pick-up and drop-off Support with medical and dental treatment if required Support with opening bank accounts by providing a confirmation letter Providing an out of hours emergency number to all international students

Personal Tutor Support:

Support for all students and advice on academic progress. Your tutor will help you focus upon any specific areas of English, or your wider studies, that may need additional support or practice, improving your knowledge and skills. For those who want to go to university, your personal tutor will help with your university application ensuring that you have the best opportunity to get a place at your chosen university. Your tutor can also direct you to the right people to help with any other problems.

Safeguarding/At Risk Team/Counselling:

If you need talk to someone about a personal problem, we have teams in the college who are easily available. The Safeguarding Team have a direct telephone number which is in the pre-arrival pack.

College Security/ID and Badges:

Friendly security personnel keep all college premises safe. The college has a strict policy that everyone who works and studies here must wear a badge with their name and photo on it – different colour lanyards are given to students who are under-16 years old, and staff have a distinct colour lanyard so they can be identified by students if they require immediate help.

Walk-in Health Centre:

There is a walk-in Health Centre where you can register with a doctor or wait to see a doctor. It is open from 08:00 – 20:00.

Multi-Faith Room:

The college has a Multi-Faith Room for anyone who wishes to pray during the day. A list of places to worship in and around Hastings is included in the pre-arrival pack.

Student Services Team:

We have a dedicated Student Services Team who can guide and advise you about your next steps with us at Sussex Coast College Hastings.

Gym and Sports:

The college has a gym which students can join at a very special, low rate. The college has a sportsmaker who organises team sports and other leisure activities for all students.

Student President:

The Student President represents students and is a middle point between students and teaching & managerial staff. Students may find it easier to relate to the Student President as their peer.

Learning Resource Centre:

This is open on most days until 18:45 and is a safe and warm area to study.

Friends International:

One evening a week, a supervised meeting of a group from the community meet international students in the college coffee shop. You can practice your English, make new friends and have fun with games, quizzes, discussions and presentations.

Hastings Overseas Student Advisory Council (HOSAC):

The college is a member of this group. It is made up of local language schools and colleges and is driven by Hastings Borough Council. The police attend the regular meetings and advise on any problems in the town. This information is passed on to students, making sure that you are kept safe while studying in Hastings. ACCOMMODATION

All accommodation provided by Sussex Coast College Hastings is carefully selected, inspected and all hosts are DBS checked in accordance with the British Council accreditation standards.

Sussex Coast College Hastings works in partnership with lets2share.co.uk that provide one-stop-shop to easy and modern living. Creating and providing safe, clean and enjoyable accommodation in central locations of popular areas at value for money prices. Favoured by international students, the homes provide personal space with the benefit of shared and sociable areas. The shared homes in Hastings are all in the town centre and close to everything the town has to offer. The homes are in high demand due to the excellent standard of finish both internally and externally having been newly refurbished within the last 18 months. The spacious bedrooms are fitted with high quality furniture including desks and office chairs and offer ample storage and space to spread out. Shared spaces are cleaned weekly and all homes have laundry facilities and excellent WiFi coverage providing convenience to all in residence. The friendly lets2share.co.uk team are close by and on hand to offer help and advice when needed. They can be contacted 24/7 in the case of an emergency and provide a dedicated maintenance team. Types of accommodation we can offer you: Homestay:

Living as part of the household, eating together and sharing common living areas. No more than four students in this type of household. This is a good way to speak English, experience English life and culture, and make life-long friends.

Private houses:

Living with hosts as in homestay accommodation, but with more than four students in the house.

Self-catering 1:

A limited number of rooms are available in a house where the owner also lives. This is available to students who are over 18 years old. Please note that although you share the house with your host, you do not get the same contact as you do in a homestay/private house accommodation.

Self-catering 2:

Outside agencies provide accommodation with other students, and flats/houses. Students must be over 18 years old and are responsible for organising this accommodation themselves. Members of the College staff are available to help with any queries and explain tenancy contracts. There is a check-list available to help you. (If you wish to rent a flat or house, the College recommends that you stay in homestay accommodation for one or two weeks. You can then look around the town and check out available accommodation.)

Residential:

The College can either arrange accommodation for individual students who are 18 years and over, or put you in contact with approved agents who provided residential type of accommodation. Groups of students who are accompanied by leaders and are under 18 years old can also be accommodated in this type of accommodation depending on availability.

All accommodation is situated in the St Leonards and Hastings area, in walking distance, or with easy access to public transport: • Under-16 year olds are placed near leaders or as close to the college as possible. • Hosts are asked to bring students to college on the first day or show them the way. • The college is situated and adjacent to the main line railway station and the Hastings bus terminus. The student Welfare Officer is happy to provide information on bus and train schedules. Sussex Coast College Hastings can provide accommodation as described above to meet individual student’s requirements as applicable. ACTIVITY PROGRAMME

The social programme at SCCH is designed to make sure you have fun and make friends and also lets you practice your English outside the classroom. We aim to provide a total immersion experience that reinforces what you learn in the class, ensuring you remember more of it after you leave us. All activities are arranged and run by our local partners. Activities may include: •

Local tourist attractions including visits to the site of the Battle of Hastings, Pevensey Castle and medieval Rye town and Harbour

Day trips to London and other cities including Oxford, Cambridge and Canterbury

Student BBQs, evening events and access to our gym and sports facilities

A representative comes in once a week to meet with you to discuss and book additional excursions to places such as: •

Prague, Paris, Amsterdam and Scotland

World-class sporting events, concerts, West End shows and weekend excursions
