CAMPUSES STATION PLAZA Sussex Coast College’s main campus is based next to the train station in Hastings town centre. Courses located here include A Levels, Art, Business, Hospitality and Catering, Hair and Beauty, Sport, Public Services, Health, Child and Social Care and Foundation Learning. The large, light-filled atrium is surrounded by 22,000 square metres of study spaces and social zones. Classrooms are equipped with the most up-to-date resources and interactive whiteboards. Station Plaza also houses IT suites, gym, performance studios, exhibition areas, Coast Coffee, Dine, Subway, training kitchen, professional salon, Coast Restaurant and a large Learning Resource Centre.

At both campuses, students have 24/7 access to lessons and learning resources from home via WIKI, podcasts and teacher/student blogs. Students can hire laptops from the LRCs and both sites are WIFI activated.

Less than a mile away, Ore Valley takes under a minute by train from Hastings town centre and has 7,000 square metres of realistic working environments, workshops and ‘live build’ areas. This is where Construction, Engineering, IT and Music Technology students are based. In the central atrium, students construct, wire, plumb, fit-out and decorate a full-size house. Students have access to the latest equipment and digital technology, Learning Resource Centre, a sports pitch, diner and coffee shop.

ORE VALLEY

AMAZING FACILITIES RECEPTION Reception is much more than the welcoming face of college. As well as taking phone calls and greeting visitors, reception staff can help you find the people you need. They issue visitor badges, give directions, ensure college buildings are safe and clean and deal with emergencies alongside the Duty Manager. Reception can provide useful information about everything happening within the College. They also look after lost property. Plaza reception times are:

DINE The refectories at both campuses serve tasty hot and cold lunches, sandwiches, desserts, fruit, snacks and drinks. Food is freshly prepared on site and prices are competitive. They are open from 8am – 4pm every weekday.

The cafés at Station Plaza and Ore Valley are a great place to relax and meet friends. They sell hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, snacks, fruit and pastries. They are open every weekday from 8.30am – 5pm.

COMPUTER SUITES Students at SCC are encouraged to complete their work on a computer and there are 750 workstations/laptops for student use. The college is fully networked, with high speed email and internet, online study resources and industry-standard software. There is wireless internet access throughout both campuses. Students can access their college email and shared area from home, through the college website. PLAZA HAIR AND BEAUTY The Training Academy at Station Plaza is fitted with the latest equipment from Wella and offers a wide range of hair and beauty treatments at discounted prices (prices can be found at reception or on the college website). Salons are open to the public.

PLAZA FITNESS The Fitness Centre at Station Plaza is run in conjunction with our Sport and Leisure courses and houses top-quality equipment and changing facilities. The gym is fully supervised and is open to students, staff and the public during term-time.

COAST RESTAURANT Coast Restaurant serves fine food and wine in modern and intimate surroundings at Station Plaza. Hospitality and Catering students prepare, cook and serve dishes under professional supervision as part of their training, using seasonal and local ingredients wherever possible. The restaurant is an excellent venue for small and large parties, providing a relaxed and professional atmosphere for business and social events. Lunch:

LIBRARY There are Learning Resource Centres on both campuses, catering for different learning styles with quiet zones for study, research and computer work and other areas for group work and discussion. The automated self-service issue and return system means library staff are free to support students with their research. Other resources include: laptops on loan, cinema room, books, audio books and e-books, newspapers and magazines, DVDs, printing, scanning and photocopying, self-issue and online book reservation.

ART SHOP Based at Station Plaza, the art shop stocks a wide range of materials, from charcoal to Fabriano rolls, quality papers and graphic pens. It also provides a bespoke framing service. Students, Hastings Art Forum and SOCO members get a 10% discount. Opening Times:

ENERGY CENTRE

JIGSAW NURSERY Jigsaw is an OFSTED outstanding nursery that has been operating in Hastings for 18 years. Its newest nursery at Station Plaza is equipped with everything your youngster needs to learn while you are working or studying. In this small and friendly environment, your child will take part in age-appropriate activities including stories and rhymes, letters and sounds, singing, instruments, music, movement, role play, imaginative play, outdoor play, construction, maths games and crafts.

MOTOR VEHICLE CENTRE (LOCATED IN BEXHILL) The Motor Vehicle Training Centre offers qualifications and hands-on training in all aspects of vehicle maintenance, repair and restoration. The centre has IMI (Institute of Motor Industry) accreditation and approval to deliver E3 and levels 1 to 3 Motor Vehicle Maintenance and apprenticeships. Sussex Coast College works in collaboration with St Leonards-on-Sea MOT Test Centre, Sovereign Coachworks and Bexhill 100 Motoring Club.

Based on Castleham Industrial Estate, the Energy Centre delivers energy industry qualifications and is used by many local companies for gas, electrical, appliance, water and heating training. The Energy Centre aims to meet future demands for skills in renewable energies and specialises in sustainable energy courses and advanced technologies such as photo voltaic and solar power.

Hastings train station is right next door to our Station Plaza campus. There are regular trains from all local stations from Brighton, London and Ashford throughout the day.

Ore train station is a two-minute walk from our Ore Valley campus. There are regular trains leaving from Hastings and Ashford which pass through this station throughout the day.

BUS

Hastings bus station is also next door to our Station Plaza campus with regular buses coming from all over the Bexhill, Hastings and Rother area throughout the day.

There is one bus stop directly outside our Ore Valley campus and multiple bus stops in the surrounding area which are walking distance to the campus.

CAR

There is no on-site parking at Station Plaza but there is plenty of pay and display on nearby streets, in Priory Meadow and at the train station.

There is a car park at Ore Valley which is free for students to use all year round. We suggest that you arrive early to secure a parking space.

What you do with your education is a very important step, so we want you to have as much information as possible to help you make that choice. This prospectus aims to help you take that all-important step towards realising your ambitions. If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to attend an interview. The interview and a presentation about your subject will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. A LEVEL INFORMATION A Levels are two-year courses similar to GCSEs but at a higher level in a varied range of subjects. In your first year you complete AS and progress to A2 for your second year. You need to select three or four subjects although some students take five. You are assessed by a mixture of coursework and exams at the end of each year. With A Levels you can progress to university or into employment. In order to study a GCE FOUR AS/A Level programme, students need to have achieved:

Write down the GCSE subjects you have taken and the results that you have achieved or hope to get. Then add the points together and divide by the number of subjects you have taken. Villiers Park Educational Trust

FOUNDATION LEARNING Foundation Learning provides a positive gateway for those who are at level 1 and below, who may have additional needs or have previously been reluctant to engage with learning. Foundation Learning provides the skills to move into further learning, independent living and employability. The atmosphere is understanding and informal, with a focus on the development of personal and social skills, as well as vocational interests and functional skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT. This is a full-time course for 16-19 year olds who may have struggled with their maths and English in the past and who might not yet be sure what type of work they want to do in the future.

A personalised learning programme for young people (16-24) who have severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities, to develop greater independence and employability skills.

Learners on this course improve their skills in a post-school, employment and training-driven environment while still receiving the necessary support to succeed.

The teaching, learning and support is provided by specialist staff and is highly structured, with clear ownership of space and access to a range of environments.

Students study for a Certificate in Personal Progress as well as working on their English, maths and IT skills which are formally accredited through a functional skills qualification.

Teaching and learning strategies follow the principles of TEACCH, and can be communicated through PECS and Makaton. Our students have access to enabling technology such as task prompters, and a real-life home skills area where learners can practice their domestic skills and master the use of household appliances. Resources include safe haven, chill out zone, low arousal environment, sensory room, creative arts and employability skills environment.

If you are a strong academic learner and you want to keep your options open, the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma is an excellent choice.

Do you have a specific career in mind? If so, a vocational diploma might suit you. The vocational diploma will give you the skills and knowledge for a particular area of work. It is also a solid route into university, combining practical skills with academic theory.

We are accredited by the University of Brighton to deliver foundation degrees. These are university-level qualifications equivalent to the first two years of a degree. Foundation degrees equip you for a particular area of work and have been designed with the help of employers from that sector.

This broad two-year programme will prepare you for a vast range of degrees including medicine, law, engineering, languages, humanities and the sciences. The programme leads to a single IB qualification, rather than qualifications for separate subjects. Universities across the world recognise and value the IB diploma.

Entry requirements: five GCSEs grades A*-B (or equivalent), including Maths; IELTS 5.5 for writing, or equivalent qualification.

Sussex Coast College offers a wide range of high-quality diplomas and has been awarded the status of ‘Centre of Vocational Excellence’. The IB is designed for learners between the ages of 16 and 19. At Sussex Coast College we have welcomed IB learners from all over Europe, Africa, Russia and the Far East for over 12 years. In 2009, our average IB score was an excellent 32. Many of our learners have gone on to study at top universities in the UK and USA.

The level 3 diploma is a two-year preuniversity course and is equivalent to three A Levels. Most diplomas are assessed by assignments rather than examinations, which can make them less demanding in terms of language.

SCHOOL OF ENGLISH English language courses run all year round for individuals and groups of any size. Courses run for a minimum of two weeks.

Summer School

The minimum age of students is 16, except during the summer term (July-August), when students aged 14+ are welome in supervised groups.

Our summer school runs from July to mid-August. Classes are suitable for students aged 16+ (or 14+ in an organised group with an adult leader). SCC students on this course can now not only apply for Nursing (including General Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, and Mental Health Nursing) and Midwifery, but they can also apply for degree courses in Occupational Therapy, Paramedic Training, Pharmacy and Radiography with some confidence.

Students wishing to study Humanities at university will find that this course not only does the trick, but goes quite a lot further.

ITT offers a real opportunity to think outside the box to anyone who cares to take that chance. How else will you engage your learnersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attention in class?

Taught across a range of subjects, students join their peers in Initial Teacher Training to around 20 units of study that range from Critical Thinking, English Literature and History to Media Studies, Film Studies and the Creative Arts.

Students will take subject-centred courses such as History and Philosophy of Education, Childhood Studies, and the history of post-1945 education in Britain, but they will also join with their peers to study in crossover subject areas such as Sociology, English Literature, Critical Thinking, History, Media and Film, and others that aid understanding of the wider world. The 20-unit SCC course will fully support your UCAS application and enable you to apply for most university courses in Education Studies, and those that focus on specific types of primary and secondary education.

Study skills and a reflective diary are essential subject areas, and you will be given every possible assistance to complete your UCAS application to reflect your wishes and intentions.

However, you are advised that if you wish to study to teach at primary level you will be expected by your university/ies of choice to have obtained GCSE grade C or above in English, Maths and Science: this is a government requirement and nothing else will do.

A word of caution. Although Access students are not required to have any GCSE qualifications, it is increasingly the case that HE institutions request evidence of literacy and numeracy at level 2 / grade C in Maths and English from applicants to some courses. Chief among these are Nursing and Midwifery, but Social Science/ Economics courses may also request these. It is vital that you check with your HE institution/s of choice before joining an Access course. SCCH will provide GCSE equivalence in English and Maths at level 2 as part of its Access provision. However, if your chosen HEI asks for GCSEs, they mean exactly that, and if you need to take those exams you should be aware that it is hard work to deal with them and with the demands of Access.
