At Sussex Coast College Hastings, we know how important it is for you to be a part of your child’s future. Therefore, we have put together this frequently asked questions page for you to ensure a smooth transition from school to college. What is Further Education (FE)? FE covers a wide range of education which goes beyond what has been achieved in primary and secondary education. Typically, FE includes: A-Levels, Apprenticeships, Vocational qualifications, Foundation Learning and provides the foundation to higher education including degrees and Higher Apprenticeships.

Which qualification is right for my son/daughter? There are lots of qualifications to choose from at Sussex Coast College Hastings, and knowing which one is right can be a tricky decision. We have a dedicated team to help you with this choice and to discuss the options available to you. For more information, call 01424 458475, email info@sussexcoast.ac.uk or drop in to see us.

Can I visit the college before my son/daughter applies? We have open evenings throughout the year for you to find out what our college has to offer. These events give you the opportunity to look around the campuses, see the facilities, meet the tutors, and talk to students who are currently studying at the college. You can find these dates on page 3.

How does my son/daughter apply to college?

How will I be involved in my son’s/ daughter’s college life?

Your child can apply for up to two courses and have more than one interview. The most important thing is that your child enrols on to the course that is right for them.

You will be kept informed of your child’s progress through regular Parent Consultation Evenings. We also host a Parents’ Voice session where you will be invited to give us your views on all aspects of college life. You can also contact tutors directly to discuss any issues during term time.

Although it helps to have the application in early, remember that it’s never too late to apply.

What happens at the start of college? Our Induction Days provide a further opportunity for students to have a successful transition from school to college life. Students are provided with the opportunity to tour the college building, become aware of staff that are available to help support their studies, and see the facilities that the college provides.

Is there any support available for my son/daughter? At Sussex Coast College Hastings we take supporting your child very seriously. There are specialist Additional Learning Support teams who work closely with students. There are also youth workers and trained professionals for students to discuss any personal matters with. Your child will also be allocated a personal tutor who will be the key point of contact for both you and them as they progress on their journey with the college. We also offer financial support and a variety of bursaries to support students to get to college and provide the funds for materials and resources needed to succeed once they are here.

Our campuses are custom built to create inspiring learning environments for our students, enhancing their learning experience.

STATION PLAZA CAMPUS

Sussex Coast College’s main campus is based next to the train station in Hastings town centre. Courses located here include A-Levels, Art, Business, Hospitality and Catering, Hair and Beauty, Sport, Public Services, Health, Child and Social Care and Foundation Learning. The campus is also home to our Higher Education students.

ORE VALLEY CAMPUS

Less than a mile from the main campus, Ore Valley takes under a minute by train from Hastings town centre. This campus is uniquely built to encompass has 7,000 square metres of realistic working environments, workshops and ‘live build’ areas. This is where Construction, Engineering, IT and Music Technology students are based.

On-site facilities include IT suites, a gym, exhibition areas, a training kitchen, a professional salon & beauty suite, a fine dining restaurant, a large Learning Resource Centre, Coast Coffee, Dine (the college canteen) and Subway. Station Plaza is just a stone’s throw away from the beach and the bustling Hastings town centre (where you can spend your free periods shopping or getting lunch with your friends).

Within the college grounds, students construct, wire, plumb, fit-out and decorate a full-sized house. Also students have an opportunity to use the on-site 3D printer as well as recording studio. You will have access to the latest equipment and digital technology, a Learning Resource Centre, a sports pitch, diner and coffee shop.

AUTOMOTIVE TRAINING CENTRE The Automotive Training Centre offers handson training and qualifications in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair.

College is a very different environment from school. You will be treated like an adult and prepared for your next step, whether that is university or your chosen career. We have a dedicated Student Support Team to guide you through college life and enrich your college experience.

GET ACTIVE

The Get Active Programme offers a wide variety of sport, health and dance activities for students of all ages. All activities are free of charge, and will include football, golf, Zumba, swimming, led walks, yoga, tennis and many more. We also have strong links with the local community, so if there is anything you want to have a go at, we will find you the opportunity. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop with taking part either; we help students get qualified on National Governing Body coaching schemes, to further enhance their employability prospects within the sporting/health world. Whatever your goals, the Get Active Programme will help you achieve them.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD

We have successfully run the Bronze Award for the last four years and will be running the popular course again in 2016/17.

STUDENT VOICE

Student Voice within the College ensures students views are heard and acted upon. Do you want to represent your fellow classmates? Then why not become a student representative and attend faculty student forums. This is your chance to make changes to your course and College.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS

Students can apply to become an SCCH ambassador. The role has different responsibilities but can include speaking at school assemblies, supporting at College events and undertaking surveys and feedback sessions.

INTENSIVE PERSONAL ADVISORS / YOUTH WORKERS

The College IPAs and Youth Workers provide support for any student who may be experiencing problems with social, emotional and personal issues. They can also provide practical support e.g. housing and benefit issues and concerns.

THE VILLIERS PARK SCHOLARS PROGRAMME

SCCH participates in the Villiers Park Scholars Programme; Scholars moving up from school will have mentoring sessions. If spaces become available at the beginning of the academic year, additional Year 12 Scholars from the Sixth Form may be selected.

The canteen at Station Plaza and Ore Valley serve tasty hot and cold lunches, sandwiches, desserts, fruit, snacks and drinks and is run by our catering students and tutors. Come and get your breakfast, lunch or snacks here every weekday.

COAST COFFEE

The coffee shops at Station Plaza and Ore Valley are a great place to relax and meet friends. They sell hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes, fruit and ice-creams. They are open every weekday.

PLAZA HAIR AND BEAUTY

The Training Academy at Station Plaza is fitted with the latest equipment from Wella and offers a wide range of hair and beauty treatments at discounted prices.

PLAZA FITNESS

Station Plaza hosts a gym which is fully supervised and open to students, staff and the public during term time, at a reduced rate.

COAST RESTAURANT

Coast Restaurant is a fine dining experience in modern and intimate surroundings at our Station Plaza campus. Hospitality and Catering students prepare, cook and serve dishes under professional supervision as part of their training, using seasonal and local ingredients wherever possible.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

Both Station Plaza and Ore Valley offer stateof-the-art equipment in their spacious LRCs. Trained staff offer help with proof-reading,

Based at Station Plaza, the art shop stocks a wide range of materials including books, canvases, paper and pens. It also provides a bespoke framing service where students receive a 10% discount.

COMPUTER SUITES

We have over 1,300 macs, pcs and laptops for student use. The college is fully networked, with high-speed intranet, online study resources and industry-standard software. There is wireless internet access throughout both campuses. Students can access their college email and shared area from home, through the college website.

Ultimately, the end goal for any of our learners is to achieve and secure employment that they can earn a living from and enjoy. At Sussex Coast College Hastings, we have a range of career development programmes for you to get involved in.

WORK EXPERIENCE AND EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

Work experience is a valuable addition to what you learn at college, as well as looking great on your CV. We support all of our students to find suitable work placements. Our internal work experience staff will help you find a placement and our teaching staff will ensure you are as prepared for the world of work as possible with support to access training sessions on: • Developing a stand-out CV • Successfully applying for jobs • Preparation for an interview • Making a lasting first impression and attitudes and behaviours at work

CAREERS AND FUTURE PLANNING

The college also has a dedicated team to offer you support with your next step. This could include going to university, looking for employment, volunteering or progression at college. The College hosts a number of recruitment fairs throughout the year to support our students get part-time, full-time or seasonal work as well as getting access to all our apprenticeship jobs. Academic and student support staff are also there to help you develop an impactful UCAS application with a focus upon making you stand out with your personal statement.

ENTERPRISE

We encourage and support you to develop your enterprise skills and talents outside your course. We offer opportunities for you to improve your communication, teamwork, problem-solving and creative skills. PARK

The Source Park is a giant new skate park, retail store and café under Hastings beach that is the largest underground BMX and skate park in the world! The Source has teamed up with Sussex Coast College Hastings to provide young people with work experience opportunities in fields of service, tourism, graphic design, media and sports development. They will also be creating full and part time jobs in the town; many of which will be offered to young people. The Source began life in a small shop in 2003 and has grown every year since in to the market leaders in Europe. Still owned and run by the founders, they are committed to offering extensive work experience opportunities to Sussex Coast College Hastings students first. As the UK’s leading BMX and skateboard retailer with dozens of employees in Hastings, the company can offer interesting roles in retail, customer service, e-commerce, hospitality and event organisation. The company also works closely with Sussex Coast College on art installations on the walls of their unique building. The giant new skate park is a £1.4m project involving the conversion of a giant underground space that was built by the Victorians in the 1880’s as Turkish baths, and later used as a swimming pool and ice rink before falling into ruin. The building lay derelict for 18 years before The Source embarked on a 2 year project to convert the space in to the Source Park, complete with a giant park with room for up to 600 spectators, a smaller street plaza where lessons can be run and a retail store selling the latest street wear fashions, as well as BMX and skateboard hardware. The park also has a large café with a DJ booth and superfast Wifi, which completes the building and overlooks the main park, giving the best view in the house.

Previous School: St. Leonards Academy Level 3 Uniformed Public Services student ‘I have always wanted to go into the police but when my tutors suggested University, I thought, why not! Now I am going to be studying Policing and Criminology at Birmingham City University and hope to go into the police after.’ ‘We get involved with events from Armed Forces day, to Remembrance day and running our own Christmas fairs. The events are all different, not necessarily related to the army or police, so we get to experience many things.’ ‘You do have to be prepared to be disciplined, but the tutors are the best tutors I have ever met and I couldn’t pick my favourite if I tried. The best bit is we get to play paintball and shoot the tutors at the end of term!’’ Bailba left St Leonards Academy and completed A-Levels at SCCH, before following her dreams and joining the Uniformed Public Services course. She is joining Birmingham City University to study Policing and Criminology.

Previous school: St. Leonards Academy Level 3 Site Carpentry student ‘I originally enrolled on multi-skills and soon realised carpentry was the trade for me. I was working at a plastering job when a carpenter offered me part-time work, it was then I decided to get qualified in site carpentry and SCCH offered the best course locally.’ ‘My favourite thing to do is cut and pitched roofs. We make them in a smaller scale but learn all the skills needed to take it further. The course is 60% practical, we draw what we are going to do and then do it.’ ‘My advice to anyone thinking of studying carpentry at SCCH would be to try the multi-skills course first to see if you enjoy carpentry, or get some work experience in the area. ’ Harry Wright is studying for his Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry whilst working part-time for a local carpentry firm. He previously studied at St Leonards Academy. He plans to go into full-time employment in June, working for the carpentry firm who first introduced him to the trade. He has his own tools and plans to buy his own van next month.

Depending on your circumstances, you can receive financial support at the College. Take a few minutes to read the following information to see what opportunities are available to support you during your time at Sussex Coast College Hastings.

16 – 18 STUDENT SUPPORT FUNDS

Young people who need some financial support to help them study at College can apply to the 16 -18 Student Bursary Fund. Under the Guaranteed Bursary Fund, students are eligible for up to £1200 towards the cost of coming to College, if they are: • Young people in care • Leaving the care of their local authority • Those in receipt of Income Support in their own right • Disabled young people in receipt of both Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in their own right. CHILDCARE SUPPORT Care to Learn

Care to Learn is a government scheme providing assistance with the cost of childcare for those students aged under 20 at the start of their course. Childcare provision must be OFSTED registered and financial assistance can be provided up to a maximum of £160 per week. Application forms are available from Student Services and online at www.gov.uk.

The 19+ Student Support Fund is a discretionary fund for students aged 19 and over at the start of the academic year. Financial assistance may be provided for the compulsory costs of coming to college, and in exceptional circumstances, fees.

20+ Childcare Support Fund

FREE BREAKFAST / MEAL

Students are expected to contribute towards the cost of their childcare and if they are entitled to Early Years Funding, this is expected to be used to fund timetabled hours. Application forms are available from Student Services and online at www.gov.uk.

All students aged 16-18 are able to access a free breakfast. This is available at all college sites between 8:15-8:45am. Students under 19 with a household income of £16,190 or under and in receipt of certain benefits will be eligible for a Further Education Free Meal.

This fund is available for those aged over 20 at the start of the academic year. It provides assistance with the cost of OFSTED registered childcare for timetabled hours, term time only.

Make the most of student life. Being a Sussex Coast College Hastings student gives you the opportunity to get a good education and make new friends, all whilst being in the centre of Hastings town. Students are able to visit the town or the beach during their free periods or use the quiet space in the library to study. Amy is a Health and Social care student who aspires to become a nurse once she has gone on to Kingston University. I meet my friends in Dine to get my free breakfast. There is so much variety but I go for scrambled egg on toast today. I was supposed to go to the gym before college but I overslept and missed my last workout of the week! Damn!

Time for our first lesson of the day, English. I was really worried that I didn’t get a C at school as I knew I needed this grade to get into nursing at university, but the college has been so supportive and I am confident I will get my GCSE English in the summer. Bring it on!

Lunch time! I meet my friends and we head to Subway to get a meal deal before sitting in the atrium around the table tennis. The boys have a game whilst we sit and gossip on the sofa for an hour.

Time for my final lesson of the day. We are looking at the good and bad points of our own diets. I have been keeping a food diary for the past week so I am excited (if not a little shocked - I’ve eaten so much chocolate!) to compare my eating habits to my tutors who are really healthy!

After college I wander down the road into town to get myself some new clothes for the weekend. There is so much choice, from Topshop to New Look. Me and my friends can shop for hours! After we have finished, we head to McDonald’s to get some dinner as a naughty Friday treat! I won’t mention that in my food diary!

Note to self: I must head to the LRC to get some help with my latest assignment.

Now we have an employability lesson. This helps us discover which area of health and social care we want to go into, there are so many options and it is great as the tutors have a variety of backgrounds to advise and guide each one of us.

I have a quick break now, just time to grab a cup of coffee in Coast Coffee and catch up with a few friends who are studying A-Levels at the college, to discuss our plans for later in the afternoon.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back to class now, to learn more about human anatomy and physiology. I love this subject as I want to go into Nursing and I find the way the human body works so interesting. This week we are dissecting organs!

I have to get an early night tonight as I have placement tomorrow. This is my third week working with Supported Education students at the college and I am loving it. This week I am helping them prepare for their next college show, before taking them out for the afternoon to do some fun activities.

Are you a student who likes doing some course work but enjoys academic study and excels in exams? A-Levels are highly valued by universities and employers and focus on academic subjects, although some are work-related. AS-Levels can be taken as a stand-alone qualification, or as the first part of an A-Level course. AS-Levels are completed at the end of Year 12. A2 exams and coursework are added on to an AS-Level at the end of Year 13 to build an A-Level qualification.

Vocational Courses These courses would suit a student who knows what industry they want to work in, prefers a more practical way of learning in real situations and who likes completing course work. You can build up a vocational qualification from entry level to the highest, level 3. Vocational courses can help you get the skills you need to start a job, progress in a career or go on to study for a degree or Apprenticeship. A-Level 3 Vocational qualification is the equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

Apprenticeships Do you want to earn while you learn? Apprenticeships are work based training courses where you will be able to earn money while you study for a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships are available at intermediate, advanced and higher (degree) level covering more than 1500 job roles. You have to be at least 16 to apply for an Apprenticeship.

Are you aged 16-24, looking for an Apprenticeship but don’t have the work experience? If so traineeships could help you. This 12-week programme gives learners two weeks of employability training, 10 weeks of work experience and you will be enrolled on our Functional Skills programme in English and maths.

Did you want to gain a degree but life got in the way? Access to Higher Education courses are designed specifically to prepare learners aged 19 or above for university entry. Many adults across the UK are now using Access to Higher Education courses to reach Higher Education. If you think that your current qualifications are out of date, or insufficient to gain you a place at university, these intensive courses will equip you with the skills you need.

We provide a personalised learning programme for young people (16-24) who have severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities to develop greater independence and employability skills. The teaching, learning and support is provided by specialist staff and is highly structured, with clear ownership of space and access to a range of environments.

Are you a young person (aged 16-25) who is not currently in full-time employment, education or training? Our Prince’s Trust Team Programme is a 12-week course that helps you prepare for the world of work, by giving you the experience and skills needed for the work place. Participants complete a two-week work experience placement in an area of their choice, which gives relevant and recent experience to put on their CV and talk about in a job interview. Students have progressed onto a range of employment and educational routes.

Our Inclusive Pathways course is designed to re-connect you with education and training. The programme aims to support and build the confidence of young people who want to make a commitment to progress onto mainstream college courses. No formal qualifications are necessary to apply for this course as we will work with you to develop a tailored plan to help you to improve your maths and English.

Prince’s Trust

Do you want to study a higher education course like a degree or HNC/HND? If yes, we may just have the course for you. We offer a range of BA (Hons) and foundation degrees (FdA) as well as a more practical HNC and HND programme. We provide award-winning courses, with small class sizes for one to one tuition and a supportive environment with industry professional tutors. We have strong industry links and many of our students go on to have a fruitful career.

International students

Entry requirements for our courses are based on your GCSE results initially to determine your level of study post 16. The table below shows how you can progress up the levels of education:

Our friendly student support team are on hand to advise and help you make the right decision about your future. Even if you have 5 GCSEs you may still need do to Level 2 instead of level 3 due to the skills needed on that course. Some courses may have some specific entry requirements. The above is based on your predicted grades and we don’t make any final decisions until you have your results.

ENTRY LEVEL

If you achieve a grade D or lower at GCSE in English or maths you will be automatically enrolled on our GCSE or Foundation skills programme at enrolment.

INTERVIEWS

If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to attend an interview. The sooner you return your form, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time, as a general rule, these are held weekly.

After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become a Sussex Coast College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.

CAN’T MAKE UP YOUR MIND?

If you can’t decide on a course, don’t panic. You can include a few that you are interested in on an application form (a copy of this is at the back of this prospectus) and then discuss them with us at interview stage so we can help you decide what is best for you. The most important thing is you eventually enrol on the course that’s right for you.

COURSE CANCELLATIONS

In the unlikely event that your course at college is cancelled, we will do our best to find you an alternative course to help you succeed in your career ambitions. Where possible, any payments towards the cost of your course can be transferred to your new course. Any refunds will be credited by bank transfer (BACS) to your bank account. There are a few plumbers in my family and they are all men, but I knew I could do it.’ ‘Because there are not so many girls in the trade, it is easier to progress and there is a market for female plumbers. Some religions and older people would prefer a woman in their home than a man, which means there is always work.’ ‘To anyone thinking about studying Plumbing at SCCH, I would say do it! It’s interesting and you will enjoy yourself. You have the six week transition period if you feel another trade is better suited to you, but it is a great course.’ Katie aspires to be a Health and Safety Executive, going onto building sites to check everyone is abiding by the safety rules. ‘I can persuade a lot of people to do what I want,’ jokes Katie, ‘In Level 2 Plumbing, we do a Health and Safety exam and get a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card which enables us to get onto different sites. Previous school: Bexhill Academy Level 2 Painting and Decorating student ‘I studied multi-skills at Bexhill Academy and painting and decorating was the one I enjoyed the most and was best at, so I decided to continue this at college. Everyone is here because they want to be and they are serious about their career which is the best bit. We all get on well and there is a good atmosphere in class. We often go to play pool together in town after college.’ ‘Studying painting and decorating isn’t just about learning to paint a wall. Owner of one of the top five restaurants in the world ‘Sepia’ in Sydney, Australia ‘I attended college from 1989 to 1991 where I trained for two years under the great lecturer Mr Stephen Barnett. I was sixteen and ready to absorb as much information as I could. I didn’t really enjoy the classroom theory, but I thrived on the practical – filleting fish, meat butchery, making sauces, baking bread. The first year flew by and I hit a full credit with distinctions.’ ‘These were informative years for me as a young Chef and prepared me for the successful career I have today. I am extremely proud to have studied at the college and am eternally grateful for the rich experience the college taught me. The career of a chef is a life-changing experience and one that is a worthwhile journey to pursue.’ Top Chef Martin Benn started his two year, full-time culinary school qualifications at Hastings College of Arts and Technology in September 1990. What will I study?

Apprenticeships in AAT are designed to help you develop your skills in roles such as accounts administration, accounts assistant, payroll officer and trainee accounts technician.
