welcome to higher education At the heart of historic Hastings is the ÂŁ120 million Sussex Coast College Hastings (SCCH) campus. Our Higher Education courses, run in conjunction with the University of Brighton, are rapidly gaining national recognition for consistent achievement and success. Our two campuses, Station Plaza and Ore Valley, are just 90 minutes from London and mainland Europe, making the College perfectly located for national and international access. We work with two Universities and two awarding partners and deliver an extensive and fast growing number of Higher Education courses. Undergraduate and postgraduate study is set to increase over the next few years and Hastings is fast becoming a very attractive place to study. There are extensive local events and a quirky and lively community focused atmosphere. Our students at SCCH learn in a stimulating environment with the best student support and student union opportunities in the university campus site next to the college.

04

Our Higher Education students regularly win national and international awards, gain excellent work experience and find employment in relevant professional sectors. There is good quality student accommodation available across the town, with some rooms available in UoB Hastings halls of residence for students studying with the University of Brighton. This provides an ideal chance to meet new people and settle into the town. Most of our courses are delivered as part of the University of Brighton, making SCCH students also UoB students and therefore enabling access to an impressive range of resources and support systems.

welcome to hastings

06

The picturesque town of Hastings is an eclectic mix of Victorian elegance and modern transformation, with a vibrant mix of business, tourism, leisure and education. An extensive regeneration programme over recent years has attracted new businesses, visitors, students and residents, giving Hastings a real buzz. Hastings’ reputation as a thriving national and international arts centre is gathering momentum. The town hosts an annual arts festival, Coastal Currents, and in 2011, the Jerwood Arts Institute opened a brand new gallery in the Old Town. In nearby Bexhill-onSea, the De La Warr Pavilion hosts high profile exhibitions, performances and concerts.

Hastings loves to celebrate, and there are lively social events throughout the year including ‘Jack-in-the-Green’, The St. Leonards Festival, The Seafood and Wine Festival, Pirates day and The Hastings Old Town Carnival, as well as exhilarating fireworks displays, bonfires and parades. The ancient fishing quarter with its colourful boats and charming fishing huts is home to Britain’s largest beach-based fishing fleet, and this area still plays a central role in Hastings culture. With its seaside setting, stunning parkland, cliffside walks, bustling Old Town, beautiful buildings, varied bars, clubs, restaurants and colourful characters, Hastings is a unique and exciting place in which to live, work and study.

07

Sussex Coast College Hastings offers 14 degree level courses in two outstanding contemporary campuses, with adjacent rail links to London, Brighton and Europe, in specialist custom designed areas for Higher Education. The University Campus sites are a central part of the town centre with its emerging student quarter offering affordable accommodation to suit all lifestyles.

station plaza

ore valley

Station Plaza is situated in the town centre, directly next to Hastings train station. Its large, light-filled atrium is surrounded by 22,000 square metres of study spaces and social zones.

Less than a mile from Hastings town centre, this brand new site has 7,000 square metres of realistic working environments, workshops and ‘live build’ areas, where students are currently constructing, wiring, plumbing and decorating a full-sized eco-house in the central atrium. This house is being built in stages over two years, to a unique design. The workshops are fitted with industry standard equipment, including a facility to generate 3D modelling.

Classrooms are equipped with the most up-to-date resources and interactive whiteboards. Students have 24/7 access to lessons and learning resources from home, via Wiki, podcasts and teacher/student blogs. Station Plaza also houses IT suites, a gym, exhibition spaces, a coffee shop, a training kitchen, a professional salon, restaurant, diner, a large learning resource centre and audio-visual/media equipment.

Students at Ore Valley have access to the latest digital technology, an outdoor sports pitch, table tennis, pool and Wii, as well as a refectory and café area. The campus is adjacent to Ore Valley train station, with Hastings town centre just one stop away (the ride is one minute). When you step off the train, you’ll find yourself at Station Plaza, right next to the shops of the town centre and a stone’s throw from the beach.

The campus is the location for large college events, such as Open Days and awards ceremonies, and frequently hosts art exhibitions, events, fairs, concerts and performances, so there’s always something going on. If, however, you fancy getting out and about in your breaks, you’ll find the shops of Hastings town centre in less than a minute’s walk and in five minutes, you can be on the beach or exploring the lanes of the ancient Old Town.

qualifications explained What is Further Education?

What is a HND/HNC?

What is BA (Hons) Top Up?

Further Education covers many course types and subjects. You could choose to study for an A-level, AS level, AVCE, National Diploma, Advanced Diploma or First Diploma. These courses are designed to suit students aged 1619 who have already completed their GCSEs. They are usually full-time courses spread over two years and are your progression route to Higher Education.

An HNC (Higher National Certificate) is equivalent to one year of an HND, usually undertaken on a part-time basis and is appropriate for students who are working in the industry. Specific entry requirements are indicated on each page.

If you decide to apply for a Top-Up year, you can convert your FdA/FdSc into a BA (Hons) degree. You will be required to submit a dissertation at the end of your studies to qualify for this award. The entry to BA (Hons) Top-Up is through successful interview.

What is Higher Education? Higher Education is the stage that follows Further Education and is generally offered at a College or a University. These courses are spread over two or three years for full-time students, or longer if you select a part-time pathway. You may be referred to as an ‘Undergraduate’ in Higher Education or as a student studying for a degree.

BTEC HND (Higher National Diploma) is a vocational qualification, similar in content and to the same level as an FdA. It is usually run over two years with no examinations required. An HND is equivalent to two years of a degree.

What is a Foundation Degree (FdA/FdSc)? Foundation Degrees are generally vocational, which means they give you skills that are valuable in the employment market. The duration of the course is usually 2 years, or longer if you select a part-time pathway. Employers are often involved with FdAs, providing work based experience and professional practice. Contact with industry is the core theme of most FdAs. Students may choose to move straight into employment at the end of their course, or progress to a BA (Hons) Top-Up course, converting their FdA/ FdSc into a full degree.

18

Progression from BA(Hons): Once you have gained a full BA (Hons) degree, you may choose to continue your studies to a higher level and progress to a Masters (MA), a teaching qualification (PGCE), a PhD or straight into employment.

Key to Higher Education levels: Year 1 = Level 4 (120 cat points) Year 2 = Level 5 (120 cat points) Year 3 = Level 6 (120 cat points) Postgraduate = Level 7

applying for higher education Making an Application: You must apply through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, www.ucas. co.uk) for a course in Higher Education. This will include writing a personal statement, and in many cases — creating a personal portfolio of work.

Your Personal Statement:

Choose work that covers a range of skills, but make sure it shows you at your best. Avoid repetition and don’t include too much work. Be very clear about your personal contribution to a group project and make sure it’s portable, so that you can travel to your interview comfortably.

This should be clear and well written and show enthusiasm for your subject, as well as familiarity with and understanding of the course you are applying for. It should include work and experiences that support your subject and explain what you would bring to the course.

Your Interview:

Your Portfolio:

The interviewer will ask you questions designed to judge your suitability for the course you have selected. They will want to know that you are committed, well researched and ready for the HE experience. They may also ask you about your ambitions and future career choices. It’s important that we understand who you are, so be prepared to talk about your interests, hobbies, working experiences and plans for the future.

If the course you have applied for has individual portfolio requirements, you must make sure it is well organised and presentable. You may not always be able to talk the work through, so be sure that it is self-explanatory or that you provide brief notes. It should be well-sequenced and include notebooks and sketchbooks where appropriate. If possible, create a digital version of your portfolio that is small enough to send by email and take a CD copy along with you. Make sure that it is a format that works on both Macs and PCs; PDF is preferred.

20

How We Make Decisions:

Interviews are an important part of the selection process. They are an opportunity for you to be seen at your best. Make sure that you arrive early and are relaxed and composed.

An interview can take from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the subject. It’s important that you are familiar with the college and have, ideally, attended an open day, if one is advertised.

21

Decisions are based on many factors. Sometimes, if it is felt that the course would not be quite right for you, you may be advised informally of other options. We try to give you our decisions as soon as possible. You will normally be advised of our decision in writing. If you have been offered a place at more than one college or university, it’s important that you advise everyone of your decision as soon as you have made it. If there is something you do not understand or are unsure about, please just ask.

Accepting Your Offer: Once you have accepted an offer, you must inform UCAS and they will do the rest for you. The College may contact you during the period leading up to the start of your course to inform you of start dates, holiday projects and accommodation, etc. Higher Education is just the start. Once you have completed your course, you can move into your career and have the many options and possibilities that having a HE qualification offers. As part of your preparation for interview, research some of the many career choices that are open to you after you graduate. Studying at HE level gives you time to develop and mature and focus on your future career. We work hard to make the HE experience a rich and rewarding one, and give you the best possible start in life.

art & design success stories

We have the opportunity to try our skills across the Art & Design department, not just our specialist area.

Keith Hau, FdA Illustration Keith Hau moved from London to Hastings to study his FdA Illustration at Sussex Coast College Hastings. “At first I was anxious about moving to Hastings. I didn’t know anyone, but after two years of being here, it felt like home. I feel more adjusted to being here than I did in London. I didn’t know much about Hastings before coming here but the space, atmosphere and lifestyle has influenced my illustration work. There are lots of bookshops and inspirations in the town. Before I came to SCCH I was more of a graphic designer, but was passionate about illustration. I feared to jump in and do it but I couldn’t have made a better decision. I prefer the tactile hands-on approach, where things are never perfect. The tutor contact time we receive is invaluable. The tutors give everything to support and feedback on the work. We even have the opportunity to try our skills across the Art & Design department, including pottery, textiles and ceramics.” Keith recently entered a nationally recognised competition run by the Victoria and Albert Museum and was shortlisted to the top 5, out of over 320 entries. Keith’s blog can be found at keithhau.com.

success stories

Alec Jones, HND Computing After studying part-time for Level 3 BTEC Diploma in IT, Alec progressed early onto the HND in Computing and Systems Development because of his strength and ability shown on the BTEC course. Alec said, “The HND is more intense, and longer days, but I still have time for a part-time job meaning I can earn some money alongside studying. “It is a great mix of both theoretical study and hands-on practical work. We learn what to do and then we have a chance to create it to see exactly how the theory works through practical application. Being at SCCH is very different to a big university; we are not in crowded lecture theatres, and we get much more one-on-one tuition and support.” Alec plans to join an apprenticeship scheme after completion of the HND and believes the course has given him a platform to show he is willing and capable. He hopes to join a successful company that will give him further experience to progress into a solid career in IT.

He already had a degree in Journalism, but decided to study for the qualification to gain a skill teaching English, enabling him to travel the world whilst earning. Sarah was working full-time when she decided she wanted a change of career and direction. Without a degree, Sarah believed she wouldn’t be able to teach, but after speaking to the Teacher Training Manager, she realised she was wrong. She signed up to the course and after completion, was offered a job teaching at SCCH. Sarah described how a fellow student had learnt English specifically to become a homestay family, being paid to host and teach the students English during their stay in Hastings. Miriam has a unique perspective, having learnt English at home in Italy. She has now gone full circle and is teaching English to international students at Sussex Coast College Hastings. ‘I am giving back what I have received’ said Miriam. ‘The learning is half theory and half practical, we were teaching from the third week which was great. You do not need to know any other languages to teach English, I would say it is useful, but not essential.Visual aids are essential for learning and we were encouraged to always speak to the students in English. This pushes them to learn.’ Jack added, ‘We received incredibly good feedback and guidance – sometimes harsh but always helpful! The employment opportunities to teach in Hastings are fantastic, but with training like this you can travel the world and teach English anywhere you want to go.’
