Looking for Inspiration? Sussex has an abundance of local culture, from its vineyards to theatres, from its historical homes and gardens to its range of small and major festivals – there’s plenty to enjoy as our Hidden County Editor Jamie Crow explains… It can always be a bit of a challenge navigating a new location for the first time, but even if you live in this beautiful county it’s still near impossible to explore everything this unique and vibrant place has to offer. I should know – after over five years of living in Sussex I’ve barely scratched the surface. I’m a sunny beach lover by nature and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and diversity of Sussex’s coastal towns and cities. Nothing pleases me more than enjoying an ale or spirit from one of the many local breweries, bars and distilleries Sussex has to offer, while taking in the life and beauty of Worthing seafront on a summer’s day. If I ever fancy travelling further afield then Hastings and Rye have some stunning old town streets to explore, while Shoreham and the historical town of Arundel have some lovely picnic spots overlooking the River Adur. Brighton, of course, is the heart of theatre and the arts in Sussex with some fantastic productions all year round. It’s also worth venturing out to the aforementioned towns in order to witness some true uniqueness with a range of shows, retro concerts, museums and galleries all celebrating the county’s culture. The county is known for its major celebration of the LGBT+ community with more events popping up every year. In the aftermath of Covid-19 many of these events are set to return bigger and better than ever this summer, so get ready for some partying in the streets. Outside of the towns of course is the beautiful South Downs which continuously amazes me with its views. It’s not just about walking some of its picturesque routes either – take the time to explore what’s going on with its historical villages, public homes, lush gardens, forts and castles, as well as a lovely selection of local vineyards, many of which produce Sussex’s infamous sparkling wine. I’ve even had my own parents begging me to take them in the past and I finally got to give them their wish last summer. Needless to say, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and not just the wine!

17 Herstmonceux Castle Estate 

Within the beautiful 300-acte estate, you can explore formal gardens, woodland trails, meadows and lakes, all set around a majestic 15th century moated castle. We welcome well behaved dogs but kept on a lead at all times please. For younger visitors, there is an outdoor play area and giant tree swing plus the family challenge of the Marlow Rope Maze. The castle was built in the mid-15th century as a luxurious private dwelling to reflect the wealth and status of its owner, Sir Roger Fiennes. After World War II, it became the home of the Royal Greenwich 12

Observatory for more than 40 years. In 1993, the estate was gifted to Queen’s University in Canada by a wealthy and grateful former student, Dr Alfred Bader and now functions as their UK campus, as well as being a popular visitor attraction. Not far from the capital, on England’s south coast, lies 1066 Country. Set deep in history, where the Sussex Weald meets the sea, lie ancient settlements and rich landscapes. Open skies and broad horizons inspire the imagination. From earliest times to today, it has been a place of creativity and escape – alternative lives lived and timeless stories told. Original by nature, it has its own take on contemporary living and culture. The produce of the land and sea arrives fresh to your table. Old traditions meet a thriving new art and music scene. Castles and forts tell timeless stories of invasion and conquest. Elegant Bexhill, jaunty Hastings and medieval Rye, these are just three towns which line our Sussex coast. Camber displays her miles of sand

dunes across the harbour estuary from a shingle nature reserve, the sea home to seals and sailing boats alike. The coast’s rich hinterland gently reveals Norman towns. Historic Battle, where the battlefield bore witness to the birth of modern England in October 1066. Pevensey’s Roman fort stands just inland from the landing place of William of Normandy. Tiny Herstmonceux sits modestly between Wealden hills and marshy levels. Hill top Winchelsea, the smallest town in England and beautiful Bodiam with her storybook castle nestle amid a rich tapestry of gardens, vineyards, moated priories, historic houses and castles. Off to the Beach Don’t forget to pack your bathing suit along with your bucket and spade when visiting our glorious county… As well as its famed countryside and vibrant towns, we’re so pleased that Sussex has one of the most stunning coastlines in the country. On a summer’s day, the sparkling, sunlit water could fool you into thinking you were off in the Mediterranean somewhere, and lying on one of the coast’s many beaches is a great way to put you in a relaxing mood. If you’re new to Sussex, we’ve got a vast array of beaches for you to enjoy, stretching for dozens of miles from West Wittering along the South East coast to Camber Sands. If you’re after a full day out with the family, Brighton is a great starting point with its endless rows of fish and chip shops and ice cream parlours, though you’re unlikely to get a good spot on a sunny day! Outside of the city, Worthing, Bognor, Hastings and Eastbourne all have their own fantastic family attractions for you to enjoy and you’re more likely to get plenty of space to yourself if in a large group, while still enjoying a good atmosphere around you. If you really want to head off the beaten track though, there’s some gorgeous little spots where you can enjoy a barbeque or two in peace, including Lancing, Cuckmere Haven (where you can enjoy the sight of the Seven Sisters hovering over the background), Pevensey Bay and Tide Mills to name a few!

Walks of Sussex Sussex is well known for its beautiful landscapes and stunning scenery, packed full of gorgeous walks. Here’s some of our favourite picks: Barcombe Mills: With a skip in your stride, make the most of warmer days with this lovely walk along Barcombe Mills and the River Ouse. Barcombe Mills is a peaceful settlement near Lewes and makes for a gentle yonder through the Sussex countryside.

Chanctonbury Ring A fantastic morning walk in the sunshine, this route takes you around the prehistoric hill fort atop Chanctonbury Hill on the South Downs. It’s a great area, full of history created over a span of more than 2,000 years.

Uckfield to Newick: This walk offers a selection of twisty and turny footpaths, making for one of the most vivid walks as you head between these two rural areas. Starting in Uckfield, our route takes you towards glorious Lake Wood and Fletching.

Bolney: This delightful venture yields more wonderful views of the Sussex countryside and is perfect for a mild stroll on a glorious summer’s day, taking in the sheer greenery of this lovely Mid Sussex village and its surrounding woodland.

Henfield: The surrounding countryside around this village in the Horsham district makes for a lovely stroll. Enjoy walking along the Downs Link and take in the lovely sight of the eastern arm of the River Adur.

Seaford to Eastbourne: Moving away from the mainland routes, this high walk gives you stunning views of the county’s coastline as you head along the Seven Sisters, with some iconic locations to discover on the way.

Seven Hills from Hassocks: This can be a bit of a long one, but the route makes for an incredible day out. Starting at Hassocks Station, the views in every direction are utterly enchanting as you head along the South Downs Way.

High Salvington: Just north of the coastal town of Worthing lies this absolute gem of a walk. Taking in the amazing breadth of the Long Furlong valley, this route takes you on a seriously underappreciated part of the Sussex countryside.

Crowhurst to Battle: Right in the east of the county is a march for the ages, as you head across the 1066 landscape and a historic part of Sussex. Take a step back through time with sights including the Crowhurst Yew and the Abbey Gate House.

Southease to Lewes: Finally, this picturesque trek is great for admiring some wide-reaching scenery across the county. Most of the route involves taking the high road to Lewes, allowing you to witness the views as you head up and down the rolling hills of Sussex. If you’d like to take part in any of these walks, then you can find a full guide to all of them in Hidden County’s special walks e-magazine. We give you full directions to all of these routes along with some great anecdotes from our resident route tester Robert Veitch. 98 Lewes Bonfire – A Tradition Of Sussex 

Come rain or shine, this long-running event takes place in the streets of Lewes every November 5 and is one of the most famous Bonfire celebrations in the world. Starting proceedings from late afternoon, Lewes is famous for its large numbers of local societies forming a procession through the town, along with its iconic effigies, many of which are

based on political characters and public figures. With the partying normally heading into the early hours, it’s not one for the kids, but it truly is a night to remember. Be wary though – you need to be up and into the town on the day as it gets full pretty quickly! Find out more at www.lewesbonfirecelebrations.com

99 Fizz on Foot 

Warm sunshine, soft grass and the wind in your hair – that’s what a guided walk with Fizz on Foot will do for you! Well, sunshine not 100% guaranteed but certainly a beautiful Downland walk, whether up on the Seven Sisters or along the River Cuckmere, is on offer for the morning of your 50

Fizz on Foot Tour. After your walk you’ll be taken to a traditional Sussex Pub for a local produce lunch and a glass of a local brew or local wine. Once you have been refreshed it’s on to an award-winning vineyard for a ‘vine to wine’ tour to see how English Sparkling Wine is made. Email: info@fizzonfoot.com, www.fizzonfoot.com

100 Newart Gallery 

What a little gem! The Newart Gallery is in the town centre of Eastbourne at 7 Hyde Gardens and offers visitors a great chance to see lots of different artists’ work in a relatively small space. Peter Patterson and Ian Shearer, the partners, like to bring new work to visitors and potential buyers to tempt and delight. The gallery offers visitors a chance to browse and see what takes

a fancy – there are ceramics, sculptures, water colours, acrylics, and oils, still lives, portraits and landscapes, original works and prints. Whether you are looking for an original gift or to treat yourself to fill an empty space this gallery will bring you art you love. Email: info@newart-gallery.co.uk visit www.newart-gallery.co.uk
