WITH BEN BROWN
With the new cricket season fast approaching, we sent Robert Veitch to The 1st Central County Ground to have a chat with Sussex Captain Ben Brown, about growing up in the county, his cricket career so far and his ambitions for 2020
as possible.” Centre midfield in football, scrum half in rugby, table tennis and hockey too. “But, I was strongest at cricket. “I would go up to Chelsea with my Dad and early inspirations included footballers Gianfranco Zola and Frank Lampard.” As cricket began to take centre stage, players like Alex Stewart and Adam Gilchrist became role models. Both were wicketkeeper batsman at the highest level.

PICSOF BEN: SUSSEX CRICKET
B
en Brown has a firm handshake, the sort you might expect from a top-notch wicketkeeper. He has an affable, modest personality too, which became evident as we sat outside overlooking the square at The 1st Central County Ground, while the lawnmower chugged across the ground, the skies dappled with cloud above us. A native of Balcombe, Ben went to school in Ardingly, “I played sport non-stop as a child, as many different sports
work rate in training was inspiring, now he’s our fast bowling coach. Older players set me an example, now I do the same for the younger players.” In 2006, Sussex achieved the domestic double, the County Championship and the C&G Trophy. It was an experience Ben and I shared from different parts of the Lords grandstand: Ben with Academy players and myself with my friend John. It was an intense, mesmerising day, a low scoring match, a match Sussex should never have won. “An incredible day,” recalled Ben, “The fight and character the team showed epitomised that period. That team was special. I came in at the back end of that era. Their achievements were so inspiring.” They’ve been referred to as ‘the team of the noughties’ and a team Ben hopes to emulate.

Aged 11, Ben went for a lesson at The 1st Central County Ground in Hove. A Sussex coach recommended him for a trial, which proved successful and Ben joined the U11 year group. Here he met Will Beer who was U11 captain. Twenty years later, they’re still best friends and Ben will be best man for Will, as Will was for Ben. From that U11 year group they were the only two that made it to professional level. “It was special to come through with Will.” Ben played for Balcombe until he turned 15 and signed for Eastbourne in the Premier Division of the Sussex Cricket League, while still playing for Sussex in age group cricket. “Peter Moores, the former Sussex Head Coach ran really intense training sessions. Aged 15 I got hit on the head, only to look up and see the next ball coming down at me, instead of sympathy. It was difficult, but it gave me a mental toughness and I realised professional cricket wasn’t a bed of roses. I had another session with Peter booked for three weeks later, so I went back to my Academy coach and demanded more from him, to make me better.” Ben made his debut for the Sussex Second XI in May 2004, aged 15. “It was surreal to play with players I had admired as I was growing up. I opened the batting at Horsham with Richard Montgomerie who was in the double winning side of 2006. Looking back I realise he was very humble. He said to me, he wanted to tell his grandchildren that he had opened the batting with me!” Robin Martin-Jenkins and Jason Lewry were brilliant mentors, they taught me how to train at their level, which accelerated my learning and development. James Kirtley’s
ESTABLISHED BEHIND THE STUMPS Ben’s first XI debut came in 2007. His first century was against Derbyshire at Horsham in 2010. “I batted at three. It was memorable because the top four of Ed Joyce, Chris Nash, Murray Goodwin and myself all made centuries.” Seventeen more centuries have followed, as has a solitary wicket. “I got Graham Napier of Essex,” Ben chuckled, “most wicketkeepers think they can bowl.” While Ben was growing up, Matt Prior had become the star behind the stumps at Hove. “It was suggested that I should leave Sussex to further my career, but this is my team, I really wanted to fight for my spot, get to the level Matt had achieved, to train as hard as he did, to be good enough to replace him.” Matt Prior had a stellar England career. “It helped that Matt was with England a lot, it meant I was in the team instead, and I started to feel like the regular wicketkeeper. I really enjoyed training with Matt, he was very hardworking and things naturally evolved once he retired.” Ben became Vice Captain for 2016, “It was a very nice moment and I started to take the leadership role more thoughtfully to become a more consistent cricketer and personality.” For the start of the 2018 season incoming Head Coach Jason Gillespie made Ben, then 30 years old, the permanent captain. Gillespie, or Dizzy as he’s often known played over 70 Test Matches for Australia “He’s a very smart manager,” according to Ben, “a breath of fresh air, he has the values of the ‘Sussex Family’ and he’s galvanised the club.”

THE SEASON AHEAD Winter training for the new season began in November with a mixture of physical and technical work. Some players have been playing for England or playing franchise cricket around the world, but they are returning in readiness for the start of the season in April. Stuart Meaker, Travis Head, Ravi Bopara and Mitch Claydon have joined the club, bringing years of experience with them. But it’s a young player from Haywards Heath that Ben anticipates as being one to watch: Tom Clark is an 18 year-old batsman who played for Horsham before signing professionally last November. The aim for the season ahead is simple, “promotion to Division One of the County Championship.” The County schedule lasts six months. “It’s gruelling, it’s exhausting,” admitted Ben. “It’s important to be physically prepared at the outset and maintain that level during the season. On a four day away game, we might be away for six days. We switched from travelling by car to a coach 3-4 years ago. It’s better to travel together, have bonding time together.” On those rare days off during the season, “I like to walk the dog and I savour time with my family. The season is very hard on all our families.” Ben lives a long hop from the ground while his parents are still in Balcombe. When he goes back, he’s just Ben from the village, a village he’s still passionate about. “I try to play a game for them each year, try to help the juniors and inspire them. My parents are still involved with the club. Now I’m older I can appreciate them sacrificing their weekends, driving me to training sessions and games when I was young.” The County side visit out-grounds at Horsham, Arundel and Eastbourne during the season. Ben received his county cap at Horsham in July 2014 and enjoys returning to Eastbourne having played club cricket there. “It’s good to

take the game back to the people, it might pique their interest in taking up the sport or watching Sussex more often. As a county we need to connect with all the clubs, all the people, we want as many juniors as possible for the future; boys and girls from all walks of life; fully able or disabled, everyone.” As the first few drops fell from the clouds above us, it was a timely reminder that rain sometimes stops play. But for Ben and ‘Good Old Sussex By The Sea’ it’s all to play for in 2020. Let’s hope the sun shines. l To get involved: Go along to your local club, visit www.sussexcricket.co.uk or look at www.sussexcricketleague.play-cricket.com

EASTER cards with cut out chicks and bunnies, make it more grown up by stencil cutting more intricate designs, try your hand at Easter origami or create a lasting display with some paper flowers – you can even create blossom by tying pink paper flowers in clumps along a branch. EASTER BAKES The Easter festival is now synonymous with chocolate, but for me there is so much more to be enjoyed on the table. There are many delicious traditional bakes to indulge in at this time of year such as hot cross buns, simnel cake,
An egg-cellent idea! Need some inspiration to help create a joyful Easter home? Sara Whatley has some creative ideas for decorations, baking and crafting FLOWERS, FLOWERS, FLOWERS Nothing says Easter more than an abundance of spring flowers. Daffodils and tulips are favourites this time of year with their joyful colours and delicate scents and look stunning in big, simple displays. Jewel coloured hyacinths will bring a spring perfume to your home and make lovely smaller displays. For an Easter tree think about catkins or blossom cut in large branches and hung with ribbons and painted eggs for a truly festive centrepiece. Garlands and wreaths really look the part this time of year as well on the table, mantelpiece or front door for a festive welcome.
GET CRAFTING Most families will get involved with some egg decorating for the Easter tree, but how about some other crafty ideas? Sticking to the egg theme, use half eggshells painted metallic with a tea light inside and popped in a ceramic egg box for a festive light display. Paper crafts are fun for all ages; make Easter
chocolate nests and Easter iced biscuits, all of which are fairly easy and fun to bake at home. Personally I love a good Easter breakfast with croissants, scrambled egg on sourdough toast and some sweet custardy pastries – all a little harder to bake at home but well worth the effort! l
Ceramic eggs will last the test of time and come in an array of beautiful colours
EGGS It’s impossible to have too many eggs at Easter. I expect some big chocolate showstoppers will be making an appearance in most homes, and some little brightly coloured eggs look lovely scattered on the table or piled in a flower wreath, but eggs don’t have to be chocolate. Ceramic eggs will last the test of time and come in an array of beautiful colours, or go DIY and decorate your own eggs for an Easter tree. Get white eggs if you can as they are easier to paint, blow out the centres and decorate! Thicker acrylic or poster paint sticks well and with a tiny brush intricate patterns can be a joy to create. Being porous you can also dye eggshells with onion skins (beware this is smelly) or craft tissue paper. Why not try something different and string up your decorated shells for some egg bunting? BLUEBELL WALK The sight of bluebells herald spring and the life enhancing feeling that those warmer, longer days of summer are just around the corner, as Robert Veitch discovered when he visited John McCutchan at Arlington Bluebell Walk
helping fund over 75 different charities. When I met John, his team was repainting the Bluebell Barn and creating a new terraced picnic area in preparation for the new season, beginning on April 9th. His enthusiasm was beguiling for a man in his
eighties; he showed me the animal petting area, sun terrace, and themed toilets. “Each charity receives a guaranteed amount of income, but they have guidelines to follow so we can offer a consistent, high quality experience. Charities provide refreshments and man the

t was instigated by my wife, Carolyn,” revealed John McCutchan as he spoke warmly of her serendipitous idea of 1972. “We began as a spontaneous fundraiser for an open-air swimming pool at Park Mead Primary School in Upper Dicker.” The response to that initial spontaneity was overwhelming and so the gesture was repeated for a second year, third year, and now into a forty-eighth year. Since 1972, over £1,100,000 pounds has been raised,

‘meet and greet area’ as well as The Gatehouse.” Twentynine charities will benefit this year and there’s a waiting list of ten. John’s devotion to his wood was obvious as he showed me Beatons Wood, the area that sparked things off. It incorporates The Millennium Walk, Upper and Lower Ponds, and Memorial Glade. Beatons Wood undulates gently, offering enchanting vistas, captivating panoramas, and the chance to slow down to the speed of Mother Nature. Every four years an area is coppiced. Oaks in a recently coppiced area look majestic, stretching up to the heavens above. Early season sees white anemones predominate, then the first bluebells flower and intersperse. As anemones fade, bluebells become sovereign. The bluebells are English native Common Bluebells (Hyacinthoides nonscripta), a protected species. They’ve grown in these woods for generations, for centuries. Over time, seven coloured walks of varying lengths with different things to see have evolved. John recalled “They got their colours from the fertiliser bags we used to indicate each route in the early days.” The first decade saw 58,000 visitors. Last year alone 25,000 visited and the 14 mobility scooters were used 500 times. John’s father, Stanley, purchased Beatons Wood from the Michelham Priory Estate in 1925. It’s a 23-acre deciduous ancient woodland, consisting of oak, hornbeam, hazel and sweet chestnut. John paused when asked if he could imagine things as they are today, back in 1972. “No”, he chuckled, “back then I had a lot of Turkeys, all year round. I was born in the house I still live in. I hope to take my last breath in the room I took my first. I walk around the woods and just think how lucky I am.” John McCutchan is as impressive as the woods he maintains for all of us. l www.bluebellwalk.co.uk Open from: Thursday 9th April Sunday 17th May Opening Hours: 10am to 5pm

Pruners Hair & Beauty is going green! Sara Whatley meets the owners, Jane and Liz to find out their eco plans
P
runers Hair & Beauty in the Orchards, Haywards Heath is a sleek, modern and welcoming place to go for a pamper; hair, beauty or both! Clarins treatments are done upstairs in the relaxing beauty rooms and downstairs you will find all the usual hair services at a variety of prices to suit all. Jane and Liz have been at the helm of Pruners for the past three years when they took the business over, although they have both worked in the salon for many years. “It has been running as a successful salon for 37 years so we didn’t want to change the fundamentals of the business, as it is so well established with lovely regular clients,” Liz tells me, but they are working hard on making the salon as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. Eco products line the shelves: Paul Mitchell is vegan and not tested on animals and their new range, Davines is sustainable, refillable, recyclable, has a 0% carbon footprint and is utterly gorgeous. “We are making small changes to how we work,”
says Jane, “it’s all about bringing sustainable awareness to the team, such as offering a refill service on selected shampoos and conditioner, switching plastic coffee pods to fresh grounds, and recycling and reusing where we can. We also run a water refill system where anyone can fill up their water bottles when passing. We are slowly increasing our sustainable ranges so we use more plant based products to try and help keep the water systems clean... It’s a work in progress but we are getting there!” As well as trying to become more eco aware, Pruners want to do more to help the environment and support local businesses. Mark from Quality Fruits, provides delicious fruit for their clients whilst they get their hair done. The team at Pruners are also busy arranging a beach clean day in Brighton. Education is also of huge importance to the salon. They keep in touch with the

They will be participating in a sky
dive in May along with Jane to raise much needed funds. Alongside this, they are also hosting a Clarins Evening in the salon this spring, which will be a relaxed fun evening with a Clarins presenter giving skincare and make-up advice. There will also be a raffle running alongside these events to support the charity. l Pruners Hair & Beauty Unit 11, The Orchards, Haywards Heath RH16 3TH 01444 413839 enquiries@pruners-hair.co.uk www.pruners-hair.co.uk Facebook: Pruners Hair & Beauty Instagram: @prunershair

It seemed to take forever. Most cottages for sale were either near a noisy road, or too dark. We were looking for a quiet but not too remote location. When I drove up the driveway, I was sure this was the right home for us.” Nestling in a hamlet not too far from a pretty English village, the house was steeped in history. “When we first moved in, architectural historians threatened to pay us impromptu visits. Lightening the beams with a lime wash was their most dramatic visual improvement. “I could not face the dust and disruption of sandblasting them,” says Annie. “The lime wash was comparatively easy although it is a labour of love because you have to work in small sections. You apply one coat of emulsion and then wipe it off with a rag while the paint is still wet. It accentuates the texture as well as lightening the whole room.”

To say Annie is extremely passionate about recycling would not be an exaggeration. Her coffee table is made from reclaimed timbers, the pendent lights came out of a sweet factory, one of her tall table lamp bases in the sitting room was converted from a fire extinguisher and doors throughout the house came mainly out of old French buildings or local reclamation yards; the front door came from an old bank building being demolished in the city. Many years buying stock for Holly Park, her interiors shop in Haslemere, took Annie on buying trips to France. Some of the most special esoteric decorative purchases have now found their way into their home. “I kept the pieces which I liked too much to sell,’ she admits. “Inevitably there were a few items which did not sell, and they have also ended up here.”

“Being partnered to an art agent is a huge plus,” says Annie pointing to a favourite primitive painting propped up on the shelves in the dining room. “Nicholas has a great eye and provided all the beautiful artwork throughout the house while I collected the furniture. We are a great team.” Recently the couple undertook their most adventurous project to date. They designed and have installed a new limed washed oak kitchen, which has revolutionised their lives. “We spend almost as much time in this room as in the sitting room; especially seated in the bay windows overlooking the garden. The kitchen is now my dream place to cook and eat,” says Annie singing the praises and extolling the skills of Antony Jee who built it. “Everything in the kitchen is stored in drawers, even the dishwasher is a huge drawer; two actually. They are so practical. No more bending down!” The top cupboards were deliberately omitted in favour of one huge shelf made from a cleaned up old scaffolding plank. Nicholas found the leather stools, which are so comfortable they are difficult to persuade guests to leave. Annie smiles. “We both love living here and especially as we have so much more room to entertain friends. Last Christmas fourteen sat down to Christmas lunch. We both love giving parties all the year round. In summer there is the garden and the pool. Even with no other neighbouring houses in sight, I never feel alone.” l Text and Styling: Narratives/Maggie Colvin Photography: Narratives/Robert Sanderson

beautiful Offering everything from bespoke soft furnishings and room styling to gifts from local designers, Caroline at Home is one of Haywards Heath’s hidden treasures, as Hanna Prince finds out
C
aroline at Home is one of those shops that you can lose yourself in for hours. It’s a treasure trove of floral fabrics, plump linen cushions, delicately scented candles and beautifully printed china, with that cosyyet-classy feel that most of us
would love to create in our own living room. But this isn’t just any interior shop. Caroline Packham, the brains behind the business, specialises in creating bespoke soft furnishings to order, from curtains and blinds to beautiful upholstery. She’s been sewing since childhood, inspired by memories of the floral summer dresses that her mother used to create on an old-school Singer sewing machine. “I do it for love,” she tells me, as we chat over a low table piled with tempting fabric sample books. “Sewing brings back memories of my childhood.” In 2005, with two young children at home, Caroline decided to turn her hobby into a profession. She took
a City and Guilds course in soft furnishings and began making curtains at home. Her dream, though, was always to have a shop. “I started to put all the profit I was making through the sewing back into the business,” she explains. “And then, three years ago, I opened Caroline at Home. Now I have a small team working with me, but everything is still handmade locally.” Caroline’s intuitive feel for interior design is obvious as soon as you walk into the shop. She also has a natural flair for tailoring her design sense to different likes and personalities – a gift that she’s channelled into a room styling service. “A lot of people don’t necessarily want an interior designer, they just want somebody to help them make their rooms work and bring a look together,” she says. “My
strong point is that I’m very good at reading people.” She looks at me and smiles. “For instance, I can see that you’d like a rustic look rather than something sleeker.” Her reading is absolutely spot on – impressive after ten minutes of acquaintance – but this knack for sensing what’s right for the individual is what makes Caroline’s service so unique. She likes to visit customers’ houses before embarking on an upholstery or curtains project to measure up and ensure that the fabric works in the home environment. She also prefers to work with small, local designers, stocking fabrics and gifts from the likes of Lindfield-born Zoe Glencross and Mosney Mill. Even if you don’t take advantage of Caroline’s bespoke services, it’s worth popping into the shop to lose yourself in the delectable range of gifts. “This is the kind of place where you just want everything,” says a customer who pops into the shop halfway through my visit. She’s at home already. l Caroline at Home 29 The Orchards, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH16 3TH 07591 984703 caroline@carolineathome.co.uk carolineathome.co.uk

HOMES
Is your bedroom crying out for a makeover? Take a little inspiration from the latest design trends, as Hanna Prince finds out
Amazing BEDROOMS
I
t’s the first thing you see when you wake up – so why is bedroom decor so often an after-thought when it comes to home design? This is the one area of the house where you can really give your creativity full reign. Bedroom furnishings needn’t be hardwearing, easy to clean or super functional. In other words, forget compromise and let your imagination take wing. Need a little inspiration? From cosy Nordic style to flamboyant expressionism, here’s our pick of the top up-andcoming bedroom trends for 2020. MIDCENTURY MODERN The obsession with simple, clean home designs from the 1950s and 60s shows no signs of abating. Vintage midcentury pieces are hard to come by, but there are some beautiful contemporary reproductions out there. Think minimalist wooden furniture and parquet floors paired with shaggy printed rugs and opulent bed linen.
Midcentury modern styles tend to display best against a white backdrop, but you could always mix modes and experiment with another top bedroom trend: 70s-style feature walls. 50 SHADES OF GREY Grey is the new white when it comes to bedroom design. Don’t be afraid to mix and match shades of grey, picking slightly different tints for curtains, bed linen, headboards and floors. It’s a trend that works well with the industrial
look – slim-legged metallic furniture, factory-style lighting and concrete walls or floors. Use pictures or even pot plants to add a final touch of colour. NORDIC RETREAT ‘Hygge’ might have had its day, but Nordic design remains in the spotlight. Cosiness is the key to this look, which is what makes it so perfect for bedrooms. Use textures instead of colours to add interest, draping soft furnishings with sheepskin rugs, woollen blankets, cotton throws and cushions. Opt for a warm, neutral palette, adding impact

Introducing navy into your bedroom could be the key to getting more sleep
with a dark accent colour. Finally, ramp up the cosiness with soft lighting and candles. ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM The antithesis of Nordic comfort, this style takes its cue from the abstract expressionist art movement of the 1940s. It’s all about geometrics and bold colours – if you want your bedroom to be fun and flamboyant rather than understated, this is the look for you. Go with punchy colour combinations (red and navy or yellow and mauve) and make a statement with geometric shapes on cushions, duvet covers, rugs and wallpaper.
JAPANDI Blend elegant Japanese design with the calm and clean Scandi mode and you get Japandi – the interior design trend that’s set to dominate home style this year. Clean lines, functionality and simplicity are key. When it comes to bedrooms, that means stripping out nick nacks and opting for hard floors, futon-style beds and zero clutter. Bringing nature indoors with pot plants, climbing greenery or bonsai trees will also help create a Japandi feel. Try organising your space according to the principles of kanso, the Japanese equivalent of feng shui, to complete the aesthetic.
way of experimenting with bold colours without any pressure. If a full wall of florals seems like too much, consider a nod to the botanical trend with printed cushions, blankets or bed linen. MOODY BLUES The 2020 Pantone Colour of the Year is Classic Blue – a clear sign that blue tones are enjoying a renaissance. Paired with white accents, navy works on bed throws, walls, cushions and bedside tables. Introducing navy into your bedroom could also be the key to getting more sleep. Researchers have named it the world’s most relaxing colour, making it perfect for bedrooms. Luxurious textiles, soft lighting and a clutter-free minimalist style can also help to create a peaceful, serene bedroom environment. l
PERFECT PRINTS Statement wallpaper and fabric prints are making a splash this season. Botanical wallpaper is set to be particularly popular – but it has to be bright and bold. Use it to create a feature wall or spruce up an en-suite bathroom. The aim is to bring nature indoors with tropical leaves, painted palms or zingy flower designs. Scared to commit? Stick-on wallpaper is a great

BLOOMING TIMES
Peas please! Easy to grow, versatile and super-healthy, freshly-harvested peas are the quintessential taste of summer, says Flo Whitaker
G
iven a bright, open spot and reasonable soil, peas are mostly undemanding plants. Seeds can be sown from March to June, approximately 5 cms deep and 8 cms apart. Adding leaf mould or well-rotted compost to the soil will help lock in moisture. Be sure to get supports in quickly as young plants produce climbing tendrils at an early stage. They also hate root disturbance – wind rock will make them miserable. Pea seedlings (both edible and ornamental flowering types) belie their delicate appearance and are surprisingly tough characters, but keep newspaper or horticultural fleece at hand to cover plants if frosty nights are forecast. Birds, especially pigeons, 40 SUSSEX LIVING | April 2020
adore pea foliage. Protective netting or reflective birdscare ribbon may be required to deter them. There are many varieties to choose from. Some are more resilient to cold and are faster to reach maturity. These are known as ‘earlies’ and will be labelled accordingly. If you select an ‘early’ and a ‘maincrop’ variety, you can extend the growing season. ‘Kelvedon Wonder’ is an old early variety that remains extremely popular. ‘Feltham First’, another early type, offers excellent
Some peas have gorgeous purple/ mauve pods which greatly adds to their ornamental value
resistance to cold weather, whereas ‘Onward’ and ‘Hurst Green Shaft’ are tried and tested main croppers. Different varieties grow at different heights. Carefully read the information on the packet; remember, tall plants will cast shade onto their neighbours. Lofty varieties may reach 2 metres, but in a height competition, the aptly-named ‘Victorian Colossal Climbing’ wins the prize. This heritage variety is still available and, providing you have space, a stepladder and a head for heights, is well worth growing as it produces heavy crops over a long season. In a good summer, Victorian Colossal can attain 4 metres – that’ll get the neighbours talking!
At the other end of the scale, bush-type varieties have modest height aspirations, require minimal staking and are good for patio pots. ‘Mange Tout’ peas are simply immature peas/pods, (the name roughly translates as “eat it all”). Theoretically, Mange Tout can be grown from any variety, but fastgrowing types usually make for tastier results; a young, succulent pod is preferable to a tougher one that’s taken longer to reach cropping size. Some peas have gorgeous purple/ mauve pods which greatly adds to their ornamental value, although the pigments are unstable when exposed to heat and usually disappear when cooked. Pea shoots/tips are scrumptious, nutritious and can be grown in seed trays in the greenhouse. An extensive root system is not required as the plants have a very short lifespan – like cress seeds growing on a damp paper towel. Cultivating pea shoots in a controlled, indoor environment also helps to keep the foliage clean. Use them raw in salads or add them to a stir fry, delicious! l

PETS
It’s a Dog’s Life Easter is fast approaching and Teddy has been sniffing around the animal kingdom. This month he educates us about bunnies, chicks, lambs, and bees, as barked with ease, through his human interface Helen Stockton
I
think ‘Her Indoors’ is a bit confused. At her age, these things can start to happen so it’s up to me to keep her on the straight and narrow as far as possible. I’m not entirely sure what to do about Easter though. I might be just a dog of limited understanding, but I know that there are certain animals, other than Border Terriers of course, who are automatically associated with this time of year. The Easter bunny is an obvious example. The history of this particular seasonal furry is debatable. Some say it comes from German folklore where the Easter hare, was supposed to decide whether children had been good or bad, which presumably influenced the quantity of Easter eggs delivered. Others suggest that rabbits have a long history as symbols of fertility, associated with the spring equinox and the coming of life. I don’t know what the truth is but I’m hoping the Easter bunny will overlook any minor misdemeanours that may have occurred, and head to the pet shop for a special doggy chocolate egg, as real chocolate is poisonous to us dogs. I can also confirm that rabbits are very fertile, breeding, well, like rabbits really, and that any making an appearance in our garden, are likely to be symbolic of a premature loss of life, rather than its arrival. I’m a terrier, what can I tell you. Another animal associated with Easter are chicks, presumably due to their connections with eggs, although which came first is a mystery to me… We don’t have chicks in our garden, but one of our neighbours used to keep
hens, and my predecessor, the late, great, Rolo, once escaped into their garden and chased their chickens. Although the timely intervention of an angry ‘Her Indoors’, prevented any serious outcomes in the chicken fatality department, let’s just say, feathers flew! Around Easter time, another of the prime animal contenders for the Easter top spot, lambs, put in an appearance in the fields around
Let’s just say, feathers flew! us. I am definitely not allowed to bark at those. As it’s ‘Junior Her’s birthday around this time, it is traditional for the females of the family to go lamb spotting so they can enjoy a bit of cuteness overload. I can’t see the attraction of it myself. If they want something small,
cute and furry, to make a fuss of, I’m more than willing to oblige, they don’t even have to ask. Which brings me back to my original point, about ‘Her Indoors’ confusion. We are acquiring some additions to the family this spring, but they are not rabbits, chickens or lambs. We are getting bees, a whole box full of them in fact. I’m not sure what the doggy protocols are for these, but I suspect steering clear will be in order. ‘Her Indoors’ has got a protective suit to wear when handling them, so I think I’ll leave her to it and sit inside, waiting nicely for the Easter bunny. I’m certainly not confused! l

WALK
STEYNING &BRAMBER
WALK
For April we tasked Robert Veitch to navigate a route through Steyning and Bramber, up to the Downs and alongside the river Adur. An overcast but beautiful walk awaited him
F
rom Newmans Garden’s car park in Tanyard Lane, walk to the junction of Tanyard Lane and High Street. On the other side of the road behind a metal barrier are four steps, leading to a passage between the houses. At the end, turn right onto Charlton Street, following the pavement around the corner, beyond Fairs Field, then veering left onto the track leading to the bowling club. This is the Upper Horseshoe Path, and once past the allotments, the gradual incline becomes evident. Amble uphill, past the metal gate and through the arboreal tunnel, to the kissing gate bordering Steyning Coombe. Walk straight up the hill ahead, which stretches out invitingly like a long green carpet. Your heart may pound and your lungs may burn, but try not to turn around until you reach Jean Kinsella’s seat because the view is worth the wait. Uphill from the seat is a kissing gate into Horseshoe Woods. The path
begins a long graceful arc to the south, the gradient easing a whisker in the process, eventually cresting the 181m (594ft) high point of the day as it passes between two fingerposts. From here, the path runs parallel to the fence line, through a plethora of felled trees suffering from Ash Dieback. By Mary Virgo’s seat, turn right, uphill, onto the chalk and flint path which leads between two fences to a five way junction, marked by the Langmead memorial. Take the second exit on the left, the planings leading down to Bostal Road. Cross carefully, then turn left and walk parallel to the road, to the junction with the concrete of Soper’s Lane. Turn left and ramble down the concrete, noting the dry valley of Steyning Bowl away to the left. Towards the bottom of the valley the concrete esses its way past the barn, over the brow and into the farmyard. Pay attention and respect the signs of Upper Maudlyn Farm when passing through. It’s half a mile along a mixture of tarmac and concrete underfoot to the fringes of Bramber, widening out as the junction with Maudlin Lane approaches. Turn right, then left, walking along Maudlin Lane on the right hand side towards any oncoming traffic. After almost half a mile, the roundabout is reached. Cross the A283 anti-
clockwise, before turning right onto the Downs Link. Walk southeast for almost half a mile, then bear left over a footbridge, then immediately right, and follow the gravel path across the flood plain to the road bridge over the River Adur. Turn left, and ascend onto the levee, walking upstream for almost half a mile to Beeding Bridge. Turn left into the charming village of Bramber. Wander along The Street for almost half a mile before taking the steps on the right to the Parish Church
Try not to turn around until you reach Jean Kinsella’s seat of St Nicholas at Bramber Castle. The incline rises quickly from the road, around the periphery of the graveyard to a National Trust sign. If your preference is to avoid the enjoyable distraction of a detour to Bramber Castle, turn left by the National Trust sign and walk along the ridge of the outer bank. Follow the ridge clockwise around the Castle site to the most northerly corner where it veers left and downhill through a legion of tree roots to join another path by new panel fencing. Turn right and head north to a kissing gate that opens onto the flood plain. Head across the field, before tracking the power lines left, into the northwest corner of the field where there is a kissing gate. At the junction with the road, turn left by the plant pots onto Kings Barn Lane. Follow the road for one-third of a

mile, not forgetting to walk on the right at the ‘no footway for 200 yards’ sign. Take the bridge over the busy A283, turning left into Jarvis Lane shortly after, then continue past the pretty homes and knapped flint walls to the junction with the High Street. Turn right and walk up to the miniroundabout. From here it’s 350m to Tanyard Lane, but on the way why not treat yourself to tea and cake, or something more substantial. After all, a good walk, well done, deserves a reward. l Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. IF YOU
ask me...
WANT TO GET RID OF FRAUDULENT TELEPHONE SCAMMERS? IF YOU’RE A QUAINT, OLD-FASHIONED SOUL, JUST TELL ‘EM THE TRUTH, SAYS FLO WHITAKER
Unsolicited telephone calls are a two-fold nuisance. They’re often illegal and usually occur at highly inconvenient moments; when you’re painting a ceiling or dealing with something unpleasant the cat’s brought in. Some marketing calls are perfectly legitimate, so I try to be polite in my responses. Everyone’s got to make a living and charmless call centres are full of stressed-out individuals working on commission – what an awful job it must be. However, the other day I received a fraudulent call from a person so inept, it was irritating and laughable in equal measure. He had a long list of topics and was intent on finding the right line to hook me with. Sadly, for him, this old trout didn’t take the bait. His opening gambit was to inform me that my online bank account had been hacked. “I don’t do online banking,” was my honest reply, so he referred to my recent car accident. “I don’t drive and have never owned a car,” I replied – again in complete honesty, so he swiftly selected another topic, informing me there was a payment error regarding a booking with a well-known airline. “I haven’t flown for 30 years,” I truthfully said. Sensing defeat, he made a final cast of the net, telling me that my TV licence had expired. When I genuinely stated that I’ve never owned a telly, he decided he was either speaking to a lunatic or a time traveller from the 19th century, muttered an expletive, then hung up. I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT
For the love of time With a love of time and mechanics, clock building was a natural hobby for Adrian Warwick to embrace. Ruth Lawrence discovered what makes him tick
A
drian Warwick has always had a natural affinity with time. He used to commute to his corporate job in the City of London from Petersfield and having to travel to strict timetables by rail made him doubly aware of the passing of time and our reliance upon the clock. His work as an underwriter brought him into contact with many interesting people, plenty of whom had interesting antique clocks in their offices which they were more than pleased to show him. He developed an interest in Lantern clocks, specifically of the period from the late 17th to early 18th century. Constructed from solid brass, steel and iron, these clocks brought hanging weights and single handed dials into the home accompanied by their familiar, reassuring tick. Adrian knew that such clocks were too expensive to buy and so he decided to try making his own; he was after all working near Clerkenwell, the heart of horological history. As the internet came of age he began scouring second-hand websites, car boot sales, local auction houses and jumble sales for Lantern clock parts among disused agricultural machinery and domestic articles. He found others who were as enthusiastic as himself and they often met at local pubs to trade parts and information. After several months and without having to spend a fortune, Adrian had acquired a considerable collection of parts with which he
intended to build a couple of Lantern style working clocks to begin a small personal collection. He was attracted to the skills of the countryman and the people who helped teach him were humble and knowledgeable. Adrian passed on this love

on clocks came naturally to him as he had previously worked on antique cameras, cars and motorcycles and he discovered “an everlasting circle of learning” as he repurposed old clocks by giving them a new lease of life. Adrian was a keen writer and at one point wrote for Clocks Magazine. Years spent immersed in his hobby led him to think about writing a book about clocks as he
The genuine Lantern clock has been altered, adapted, and repaired more than almost any other type of clock; they sit four square on any surface and have no fear of woodworm or rot thanks to their metal construction. Some of the best clock mechanisms were made by the French in the 19th century so Adrian would often adapt a mechanism as some clocks are over 300 years old and parts are now extremely rare. He found that working April 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 57

visit. He calls it the heartbeat of the house and feels much more comfortable if he can hear a serene ticking somewhere within the walls. Although Adrian has donated his clocks to other people, he still retains a passion for the workmanship, sound and sight of an old clock in action. His interest in mechanical science has now led him into another found most books about horology lacked the human angle and were rather cold. In 2000 he achieved his ambition and published
his book, Collecting Clock Memories, a comprehensive account of his horological adventures spanning decades. He communicates his passion for clocks with humour and lightness and loves to discover people who share his interest in craftsmanship and horology. After relocating to Mid Sussex five decades ago, Adrian has found many other ‘clockies’ with whom to peruse fairs, discuss clocks and share information with. He admits that he always listens out for the reassuring beat of an old clock whenever he pays someone a
avenue which he aims to become more involved in; that of astronomy. A chance visit to an observatory in Herstmonceux which holds the late Patrick Moore’s favourite telescope sparked the beginnings of an interest which he feels may be his next passion. From the hours and minutes of a clock to the light years visible in the eyepiece of a great telescope, there lies a natural progression in the journey of the man who loves clocks. l

ACTIVE RETIREMENT
Retirement is not the end, in fact it’s just the beginning! Ruth Lawrence looks at some of the exciting options awaiting you and your newfound freedom
TIME TO LIVE!
R
etirement is a misleading word; it suggests withdrawal or retreat yet for today’s new pensioners, a more accurate description might be ‘engaging with your freedom and dreams.’ Released from the shackles and responsibilities of work, people in their mid sixties are finding they finally have the chance to channel their energies in directions that never seemed possible in the preceding decades. This newfound freedom can allow them to explore facets of their personalities that have never been expressed and hidden talents can now emerge. Many people revel in limitless free time by travelling both in England and overseas; suddenly the world is your oyster so why not visit the places you’ve always dreamed of? This country is awash with varied scenery and interesting villages so why not hire a camper van and take to the road; head to Scotland and you’ll scarcely meet a soul all day out of season, quaint villages and stunning scenery await
you in Wales or how about the laid back life in Cornwall where you can hit the beach and enjoy the refreshing coastal walks. Try taking smaller roads for a more interesting journey than the motorway; the slow road is usually way more interesting.
Age doesn’t have to mean abandoning sport or even extreme sport
Why not write about your travels? Imagine how wonderful it would be for your descendents to follow your travels centuries into the future as we could have done had our ancestors had the technology we now possess. If you’ve always had a yearning to improve your photography, take a class, buy a decent camera and use it to record your travels or focus on a subject you have a passion for and explore it more deeply. There are numerous ways to share your images and gain inspiration from others of all ages. Age doesn’t have to mean abandoning sport or even extreme sport. There has been a centenarian who took a skydive from 10,000 feet and pensioners who have taken up parkour, usually assumed to be a teenage sport. The trick is to start slow and keep within your body’s present limitations while building confidence and flexibility. If there’s a skill you’ve always wanted to try, now is the perfect time; not only will learning a new discipline stimulate

your mind, it will also expand your social life. How about learning to draw or make prints? People who always assumed they ‘can’t’ draw walk away from a class delighted at their own ability and armed with another hobby to practice at home or away. Each person has their own unique style and having lived for several decades has already given you a wealth of experience to fall back on. These experiences can be translated via art or craft and results in rewarding work that you will never have considered possible. stained glass window. If they sound too ambitious, join a class with other older beginners and soon you’ll be creating with growing confidence and be amazed at your results. If your only experience of music was scratching away at the violin aged four or abandoning your school recorder, you can now access first class tuition in any instrument of your choice. Start with a keyboard and in a year you could be playing a piano with confidence, pick up a cello and you could be hooked by the potential you know is waiting in the instrument. Ever yearned to play
in a band? There are numerous opportunities to learn folk music and jam together or even take up guitar or drums and form a band with friends. Education centres across Sussex and beyond offer a plethora of courses for adult education and of course there are clubs and groups available in every town and village. If you do fancy something more formal with regular hours why not think about volunteering? From your local school to historical houses you could discover a new lease of life in a totally different environment and really feel that you are giving something back at the same time. Retirement is a time of enjoyment, whatever form that takes. Now is the time to live, discover and enjoy life. l

RECIPE
Easter isn’t Easter without some freshly baked hot cross buns, slathered with butter and enjoyed while still warm. Sara Whatley highly recommends having a go at these, they are not as hard as you might think!

Hot Cross Buns
INGREDIENTS 500g/1lb 2oz strong white flour, plus extra for dusting 75g/2¾oz caster sugar 2 tsp mixed spice 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 lemon, finely grated zest only Grating of fresh nutmeg 10g/¼oz salt 10g/¼oz fast-action dried yeast 40g/1½oz butter 300ml/10fl oz milk 1 free range egg, beaten 200g/7oz sultanas or raisins 50g/1¾oz finely chopped mixed candied peel For the topping 75g/2¾oz plain flour 2 tbsp honey, for glazing
and yeast, placing them on opposite sides of the bowl. Melt the butter in a pan and warm the milk in a separate pan. Add the butter and half the tepid milk to the dry ingredients. Add the egg and bring the mixture together, incorporating the flour from the edges of the bowl as you go. Gradually add the remaining milk to form a soft pliable dough (you may not need it all). Tip the dough out on to a lightly floured work surface. Lightly knead for 10 minutes until silky and elastic and forming a smooth ball. Flour a bowl, place the dough in and cover with a damp tea towel. Leave to rest in a warm place for at least an hour or until doubled in size. Turn the dough out on to a floured surface. knead into the dough for 1 to 2 minutes. Divide into 12 balls. Line 1-2 baking trays with paper and place the balls on the tray, placing them fairly close together and flattening them slightly. Cover with the damp tea towel. Leave for 30-40 minutes or until the buns have doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7. For the topping, add the flour to a bowl with 100ml/3½fl oz water. Mix together to make a thick paste and spoon into an icing bag. When the buns have risen pipe a cross on each one. Bake for 1520 minutes until pale golden-brown, turning the baking trays round halfway through if necessary. Brush the buns with a little honey to give a nice shine, before setting aside to cool on a wire rack.

Mrs G’s experience of Carewise
Ease the worry of paying for care The good news is that there is advice and support available from Carewise to help you with this important financial decision so that you can choose the most cost-effective way of paying for your care. Carewise has an approved panel of care fees specialists who are all qualified independent financial advisers and members of the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA).

“I found Carewise helpful in getting referred to a care fees specialist who was able to advise me on the options of funding my Godmother’s care fees. This enabled me to make an informed decision on the most suitable option. As my Godmother was aged 92 in a care home and lacking capacity, I had to act as her attorney which is a great responsibility. My decision to purchase an annuity provided peace of mind, knowing that her care fees could be paid for the rest of her life”. Mrs G, East Grinstead

LOCATION
THE INDUSTRIAL LEGACY OF
BURGESS HILL Modern day Burgess Hill bears little resemblance to the town that welcomed the railway in 1841, but dig a little deeper and the history is there. Ruth Lawrence found her pick and spade and went investigating
B
urgess Hill has a significant industrial history and to travel around the town is to witness the legacy of those earlier days, and to experience the burgeoning present industry. One of the oldest industries was the Keymer Brick and Tile Company, which evolved from the Ditchling Potteries, which were a collection of works including Dunstalls Farm. One of the farm’s owners was John Pomfrey, who was a renowned brickmaker in Keymer in 1588. From 1830 the century that followed witnessed three-quarters of Burgess Hill industry devoted to makings bricks, pottery and tiles. Once the supply of clay was exhausted at Dunstalls Farm, production between 1860 and 1940 shifted to Nye Road, southwest of the Keymer Railway Junction. There was once a factory and clay pit here that covered a fifty acre site.
Towards the end of the 1800s, the Nye Road works were the largest in the south of England, employing 300 workers and winning awards for the red terracotta ware. So successful was this product that it was reintroduced in the 1990s, a sign that the industry here was forged on past triumphs. Many workers lived on site in cottages that had brick making tables on the ground floor with living accommodation upstairs. They were a style of dwelling known as a ‘birdcage.’ During World War II, the works were closed down but the buildings played a key part in the D-Day landings, being utilised as essential storage space by the Admiralty. Immediately after the war there was heavy investment in the brickworks so that traditional methods could be maintained using new clay preparation machinery. In recent times the factory was demolished and the brown field site
has become populated with housing Today, Wealden clay is still used in the area to make these sought after tiles that clad roofs across the world. In 1897 the Victoria Pleasure Gardens were opened by Edwin Street, a well known local butcher and farmer, in honour of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. They were advertised as being “within eight minutes walk of Burgess Hill Station” and included amusements such as boating, cycling, tennis, see-saws and aerial flights on one of the first roller coaster switchbacks in the world. It was promised that “the summer houses, bowers, seats and walks command a beautiful view of the charming lake and grounds.” The lake was used for boating in summer and skating in winter, but only

after Mr Street, who weighed 23 stone had tested it for safety. These beautiful gardens closed during World War II and eventually closed for good. In 1956, one of the first companies to move onto the Pleasure Gardens site was RH Corbett and Co., an engineering company who occupied an old wooden building. The access road was extended from Victoria Road (now Victoria Close) westwards, terminating in a culde-sac. The 30 acre site to the south of this road eventually accommodated about thirty factories. During the next twenty years, development extended to Victoria Way, Victoria Gardens, Consort Way and Albert Drive. The boating lake, once a site of jollity, amusement and fun, was filled in during 1977. The area became known as the Victoria Industrial Estate, and is now known as the Victoria Business Park. It’s currently home to the British headquarters of two large international companies. In 1986, a smaller industrial estate in the north of the town was developed at Sheddingdean, now known as Sheddingdean Business Park. Victoria Business Park contains a plethora of businesses offering every conceivable service and product. A new warehouse development is currently under
development along the A2300 west of Burgess Hill, and close to the A23. The Burgess Hill Business Park Association has about 150 members and hosts a regular programme of events for members. It’s proved to be a highly regarded community for businesses in the town and enables members to network, share information and build rewarding relationships. Burgess Hill’s industrial growth has enabled the town to develop over the last two centuries; firstly taking advantage of the railway, and latterly its proximity to the modern A23 between London, Gatwick and Brighton. The future looks likely to attract an even greater diversity of businesses to the area with an inevitable economic boost for the town. l victoriapleasuregardens.wordpress.com

WELLBEING
Healthy Eating Our gut health is just as important to our wellbeing as the rest of our physical bodies. Here Lisa de Silva explores some healthy eating options
O
ur wellbeing series continues moving on to explore ways we can improve our physical wellbeing. This month we’ll consider how healthy eating habits can be beneficial in influencing how we feel. There is much truth in the saying ‘You Are What You Eat’ and growing evidence to suggest that what we eat can affect our mood. While there’s an ongoing debate about what we should or should not be eating for optimum health, it is clear that improving our diet can boost our energy levels and lift our spirits.
Try to eat a diet based on natural foods – unrefined carbohydrates, protein and good fats that release energy slowly
that release energy slowly. The basis of a mood-boosting diet should include a good balance of the following food items: • fresh vegetables and fruit • unprocessed grains, cereals, basmati rice and high-fibre pasta • lean meat, fish, eggs, cheese • peas, beans, lentils, soya • nuts, seeds, avocado, yoghurt
MANAGING GOOD HYDRATION Dehydration can cause us to feel dizzy, tired, light-headed and irritable. Cheap and incredibly healthy, drinking water is the best way to avoid this and it is recommended that we all drink around 2-litres a day to keep us healthy, improve our bodily functions and increase our energy levels. Do be wary of caffeine; while it can provide quick bursts of energy, once the effect has worn off many are left feeling anxious and with disturbed sleep patterns. Combat this by not drinking caffeine after lunch, or switching to decaffeinated products. MANAGING GUT HEALTH Much has been written lately about the link between gut health and emotional wellbeing and there is growing evidence to suggest that your gut acts as a second brain – we often make decisions based on our ‘gut feel.’ These two brains talk to each other and it is believed that activity in our digestive system may affect our mental and emotional abilities. So, gut health in the form of good and balanced bacteria could also improve our physical wellbeing. To promote this, do incorporate as many fermented products in your diet as possible, including: • yoghurt, kefir • sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh • pickles • cheddar, mozzarella and cottage cheese • apple cider vinegar, kombucha l
MANAGING BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS Eating a diet that keeps our blood sugar balanced and at a steady level is the first step to improving our physical wellbeing. When our diet is overloaded with refined sugar, carbohydrates and processed foods (often full of hidden sugars) our bodies becomes less effective at converting this food into energy and will resort to storing it as fat. In this state, we can feel constantly tired, hungry and irritable. To rectify this and to keep blood sugar levels stable, try to eat a diet based on natural foods – unrefined carbohydrates, protein and good fats 74 SUSSEX LIVING | April 20

rom an increasing range of academic qualifications to internships, apprenticeships and training schemes, school leavers today have more choice than ever before. That’s exciting – but it can also be confusing. What’s the difference between A Levels and International Baccalaureate? Are NVQs as valuable as BTECs? And is it possible to earn money while you train? Here, we explain some of the options on offer.
A LEVELS A Levels are open to anybody with at least five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (equivalent to the old A* to C). If you’re considering a university education then taking A Levels is a sensible choice. It’s also a good route for anybody who wants to keep their options open. Most students take three or more A Levels over two years, focusing on subjects that they enjoy or that are necessary for a career they have in mind. OTHER ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS A Levels are still the most popular choice for UK school leavers gearing up for a university education, but there are other academic qualifications on offer as well. The International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma programme offers a more holistic approach to education, allowing students to choose a subject from each of five groups and encouraging a range of activities
alongside academic study. Another option is the Cambridge Pre-U diploma, a new type of qualification that requires participants to produce an in-depth research report alongside studying three principle subjects.
VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS If you’re more interested in acquiring technical skills than academic qualifications, a job-related course could be right for you. NVQs, BTECs, TechBacs and Cambridge Technicals all combine hands-on learning with study. NVQs are targeted at school leavers who are interested in a
The International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma programme offers a more holistic approach to education APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS Prefer to train on the job? There are over 280 types of apprenticeships open to school leavers, some of which even allow you to gain a bachelor’s or master’s degree while working and earning a salary. Apprentices receive the national minimum wage and Government research shows that 85% of apprentices stay in work. The qualification takes at least 12 months to complete – unlike traineeships, which last from six weeks to six months. Traineeships are ideal if you lack the skills for a job or apprenticeship.
particular vocation, such as plumbing or hairdressing, while BTECs make a good choice if you know the industry you’d like to work in but not the specific job you might like to do. Newer TechBacs and Cambridge Technicals are also worth considering. WORK AND STUDY Keen to have an income while you train but not convinced that an apprenticeship is right for you? You could consider volunteering or working in an entry-level job while studying part-time. Plenty of colleges and training providers offer part-time courses, including A Levels, BTECs and NVQs. l April 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 77

oronavirus Covid-19 will have a huge effect upon all our lives, if not already then certainly in the coming weeks. As a nation, communities, churches and neighbourhoods, Befriended suggest we all need to be looking out for the needs of others. The elderly are some of the most vulnerable. There will be a silver lining to all of this, neighbours will care for neighbours, strangers will show kindness to strangers, communities will support one another through difficult times. Befriended have formed a MidSussex Covid-19 support group, encouraging neighbourhoods to communicate and help with the needs and the requests of those living around them, especially the elderly. Befriended has created a telephone befriending scheme that you can be a part of. If you would like to ring someone who is in self-isolation to chat to them, support them and encourage them, please apply to be a telephone befriender. If you would like to be a call handler and have your telephone number on a list to receive calls and take down details please get in touch. If you would like to distribute befriended cards around your neighbourhood please contact Gail Millar on us 0300 7727703 or visit the website Befriended.org We need you, together we will get through this.

HURST CRICKET CLUB
When a group of farm workers got together in the summer of 1717 to form a club to play cricket, they could not have possibly known what they were starting. The members of one of the oldest cricket clubs played for the love of the game and for many years played at historic Danny House in Hurstpierpoint. These days Hurst CC play at Fairfield Rec where the cricket and social facilities are excellent and on any Wednesday in the summer, you’ll find hundreds of kids sharpening their skills. It’s been great to see the likes of Rosie Lynch coming through the junior ranks to become an established Second XI bowler, she recently topped the clubs bowling averages and returned the scarcely believable figures of 6 for 5 during a game when she single handily blew the opposition away. Another
piece of Hurst history came last year with the first female centurion. That honour went to Kate Davies who will captain the Women’s XI this year. The club enters this, it’s 303rd year in excellent shape. Four senior teams, a vibrant female section, loads of social events, enthusiastic kids of all ages and a welcoming, tolerant attitude that embraces men and women, boys and girls of all backgrounds ages and abilities who come together for the love of the game of cricket. If you want to play cricket, find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ hurstpierpoint.cricketclub/ or join us at Fairfield Rec on any Wednesday evening from mid-April. We’re looking for sponsors! Our women’s and juniors are thriving on goodwill and their profile is rising, if you want to get involved, promote your business or product through a community project, please contact Tony Andrews; anthony. andrews10@hotmail.co.uk

PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU
A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.
CLUES DOWN
1. Meekest (8) 8. Donkey’s bray (3-3) 9. You (arch.) (4) 10. Tint (3) 11. Wooden hammer (6) 12. Totally loyal (4,4) 15. Aim for (6) 16. Cruelty (6) 20. Film theatre (6) 24. Mouth secretion (6) 27. Retaliation (8) 28. Bravery (6) 29. Atmosphere (3) 30. Incite (4) 31. Dove (6) 32. Abide (8)
2. Wedding attendants (6) 3. Asian sultanate (6) 4. Breathe out (6) 5. Topics (6) 6. Shouted (6) 7. Stroke (6) 12. Body powder (4) 13. On top of (2,2) 14. Lip (4) 17. Seaweed jelly (4) 18. Tall flower (4) 19. Repast (4) 21. Slanting script (6) 22. Tactical missile (6) 23. Downright (6) 24. Coil (6) 25. Dawdle (6) 26. Empty (6)
Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
CROSS CODE
CLUES ACROSS
QUICK CROSSWORD
Place a different arithmetical sign (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in each circle so that the total of each line across and down is the same. Perform the first calculation in each line first and ignore the mathematical law which says you should always perform division and multiplication before addition and subtraction.
