INTERVIEW
Ruth Lawrence spoke to Dame Vera Lynn’s daughter, Virginia Lewis Jones, about her remarkable mother who gave so much to the people of this country
D
ame Vera’s funeral procession through Ditchling last month was a joyful event, a community celebration of her full and selfless life. Two Spitfires made three passes over the packed High Street, their throbbing piston engines sounding their own round of applause in tribute. A spontaneous version of We’ll Meet Again, the signature song for the Forces’ Sweetheart, started up as the hearse made its way towards the South Downs and I couldn’t help but join in. It was a terrific send off for one of this country’s 20th century icons. Her legacy of unconditional support for one another will be held in the hearts of all she touched during her long and vivid life. “She was always thinking of other people and keeping their morale up,” her daughter Virginia told me. “No matter what the situation was, she always encouraged people to help each other.”
Dame Vera’s Legacy Virginia said that some of the most touching tributes to her mother were from children, in the form of little posies of flowers, left at Dame Vera’s gate. She has also received numerous letters from young people to whom her mother meant so much. Letters have always reached Dame Vera, despite people not knowing her address; one was simply marked ‘National Treasure, Icon, Sussex.’ Boosting people’s sense of purpose came naturally to the Forces’ Sweetheart. When the bombs were falling on London, Dame Vera would park her Austin 7 car outside Underground stations and descend to the air raid shelters in the tunnels beneath. She would sing for Londoners exhausted by air raids and living under the constant threat of bombardment. She gave them hope. She recorded her iconic anthem We’ll Meet Again in 1939 and it is this song that helped rally the nation and helped
give people hope that there would be brighter days ahead. Dame Vera travelled to Burma to lift the spirits of servicemen, reassuring them that Great Britain wasn’t far away
Dame Vera’s funeral procession through Ditchling last month was a joyful event, a community celebration of her full and selfless life
– she brought their nation to them. Dame Vera was remembered by Colonel Sir Thomas Moore who was serving there when she visited in 1942. “She had a huge impact on me in Burma and remained important to me through my life” he recalled in a recent interview. Dame Vera was able to congratulate ‘Captain Tom’ ahead of his 100th birthday this year after his £30 million fundraising walk for the NHS Charities Together. She told him, “Many congratulations on not only your 100th birthday, but also on achieving such a wonderful success in raising millions for the NHS. Everyone is very proud of you.” Helping children was the focal point of her life for many years and the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity was founded in 2001 to support young children with cerebral palsy and other motor learning impairments. In 2017 the charity moved to a new home in Cuckfield, in honour of

her centenary, and also because it enabled the expansion its important work. She called the centre ‘a wonderful haven of fun, activity and learning’ where children could enjoy weekly conductive education lessons through play and daily life. Extra services include outreach support, music therapy, sensory sessions, physical, speech and language therapies, messy play, and a valuable parent support network. There is also access to interactive technology such as white

boards, tablets and ‘magic carpets’, where games and images are projected onto the floor. The charity supports families across the South East including those same London Boroughs Dame Vera entertained and gave hope to during The Blitz, as well as more locally in Sussex. Recently, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the charity, which receives no statutory funding, has been struggling and urgently needs donations so it can continue its vital work across the regions. Each year in the UK, 1,800 children are born with cerebral palsy, which is a disability caused by brain injury
in the womb, during childbirth, or immediately after childbirth. The early intervention the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity provides is vitally important so that children can learn and develop physically, emotionally and socially to form a foundation for independence in later life. Dame Vera wrote of her pride in “how far the charity has come and all the work it does to support our families. It makes it all worthwhile when the children we have helped
out get in touch to tell us what they are doing and achieving as adults.” To give a helping hand to Dame Vera’s life changing charity you can pledge a donation via their website, secure in the knowledge that your contribution will be supporting her vital foundation to enable these young people to achieve a normal independent life. If you fancy something a little more challenging, how about getting friends or family to sponsor you running on a treadmill, taking part in a garden marathon, climbing the equivalent of Snowdon on your stairs, completing a sponsored family silence, or even a bake off. l www.dvlcc.org.uk

Omnia Business Services EVERYTHING AND MORE If there’s one thing to be sure of in business, it’s that change is guaranteed. So, it’s good to know that one local company can help, not just with the theory of everything, but the practicalities too. Robert Veitch finds out more
E
mma Warner’s enthusiasm is effervescent like champagne and time in her company is high in quality and well spent. Her company, Omnia, operates countywide and Emma’s keen to assist businesses that are expanding, contracting or just starting out. Omnia offers IT support, database design, systems management, CRM, business analysis and project management, and Emma’s approach is very much hands-on. “I’m trained to go into a company, interview all the staff, and study all the current systems. Every owner, manager and employee has a different opinion of his or her workplace, business or company. My task is to
unravel everything, discover what is working, what isn’t working and search for common themes. Then I report the main issues and recommendations.” Some businesses need complete overhauls and some need tweaks. Overhauls might involve systems management, business dynamics, email and website migration; exploring what can be automated and what cannot. Little fixes might be as simple as discovering jump lists. Some solutions are not IT based because it can actually be a people solution involving communication, workload and role definition. “I have a long-term relationship with The Woodhouse Butchery in Haywards Heath. Together we worked to upgrade their ordering system and designed a bespoke database that’s more efficient, and cost effective.” The staff were very much onboard during and after the roll out and changes to the

I enjoy helping people and improving businesses system are made regularly to ensure it continues to suit their requirements as new and existing customers come back online. “I helped an architects in Hassocks downsize and recalibrate, assisting their move from a large physical server to a cloud based server. This allowed remote working, created more flexibility and reduced the need for them to upgrade their own hardware.” Emma’s background includes a decade dedicated to IT support, and 20 years in project management. Proficient in database design and business management,
she had a larger skill set than she realised, and decided to put it to good use in 2017 when Omnia was created. Emma has no commercial ties to product providers; she independently recommends the best solution to suit particular business needs. “I hate the idea of selling to clients; I’m finding a way forward. I work with a variety of systems partners, but it’s the client’s choice. I only advocate suitable systems and would never sell my soul for a bit of commission.” Clients pay ‘as and when’ they need Emma; there’s no retainer when she’s not needed and no charge. “I love my work, love the geeky side of it, I enjoy helping people and improving businesses. I drop everything if there’s a problem, I hate letting people down.” “I take my work seriously, yet I feel so connected to the businesses I work with I feel like an extended member of staff.” Emma’s aim is to help businesses get to the next level, to alleviate worry. “I’m not corporate, I’m peoplecentred, and I’m on your side.” Emma’s irresistible joie de vivre is a constant presence. It’s reassuring to know that your business IT needs are her business, and that with Omnia, you really do get everything under the sun. l August 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 13

Child of Sussex
AWARDS
Now in its milestone tenth year, Jamie Crow looks at this special event which celebrates some of the most special children in Sussex
T
he Child of Sussex Awards celebrate some of the most amazing children across Sussex, who are made to feel incredibly special at this annual event. The awards create the opportunity for these young people to be recognised for their heartwarming stories. To hear what these children have been through and done at such a young age is often inspirational and highly emotional. Whether they have done something incredible for their community, been a carer to a family member, or fundraised for an important cause, each winning child is truly deserving of their award. Last year’s winner of the Gold Award was Lana Wilks, a 16-year-old girl with a hearing disability who showed great determination through her commendable voluntary and charity work. One of the most emotional stories to come out of these community awards was that of two-year-old Leo Sherlock, the young winner of a Courage accolade last year. Leo was diagnosed with a rare syndrome when he was less than a year old, which left him with a life-limiting illness. It affected much of his mobility and health, including his eyes and his hearing. At the awards, two companies who heard Leo’s story
donated a specialist bed to him, to assist his family with his ongoing care. Along with More Radio, Sussex Living magazine has been a media partner of Child of Sussex for many years, and this year’s milestone event is set to be the biggest yet. Taking place at the prestigious Grand Hotel in Brighton on Friday November 20, the glitzy

This year there are 11 categories. Any child can be nominated and you don’t have to be a child’s parent or guardian to nominate. If you know of a young person who’s done something that extra bit special in recent times, take a look at the categories to see which one you think they would be best suited to, then go to moreradio.online to put in a nomination. l

Dear supporter, You are...amazing! Recent months have been very strange and difficult with the unwelcome arrival and uncertainty of COVID-19. It has impacted our everyday lives in ways we could not have imagined. Yet despite this upheaval, I continue to be constantly amazed by the kindness and support that you, our local community, has shown. You are amazing and your support enables us to continue caring for those children that need us most. Over the last few months you have been truly inspirational - creating virtual events, shaving your heads, running marathons in your back gardens, climbing mountains using your stairs, and singing from your rooftops. You play our weekly lottery and fundraise on your birthdays. You are the unknown sponsor to our appeals or the anonymous donor on a JustGiving page. You are the school, office, business, care home, sports club, or community group, working hard, organising days, nights, and weeks to raise funds for your local community. Together, you are the future of Chestnut Tree House, and I cannot thank you enough. Thank you.

W
hen Rosemarie Fraser fell in love with a Georgian townhouse in a Sussex market town, moving out of London was far from her mind. “I was simply on a sightseeing tour with a friend from abroad who wanted to look at examples of typical English houses. When I spotted the for sale sign outside this house, it changed the course of my life.” The house is part of a picturesque Georgian terrace in an old town with quirky cobbled streets, leading to an ancient castle overlooking an unspoilt landscape of luscious meadows divided by a river. During the following week Rosemarie met up with the estate agent and put her Richmond flat on the market. “The flat went on at midday and was sold by the evening, which seemed incredible. It was meant to be. The irony was, I had sworn that if ever I moved to the country, I would insist on off-street parking and a secluded garden.” Rosemarie smiles. “This house has no parking facilities and the garden is overlooked, but other great aspects won my heart.” The best features were inherited from the previous owner who had converted the house from a lawyer’s office using high standards and quality materials. The cornices, old doors and fireplaces had been reinstated, along with stone and wood flooring exactly right for the style of the house. Rosemarie also extended, creating a room with an apex roof, now her office opening out onto the garden. There were a few paint colours Rosemarie decided to change, the bright pink kitchen for example, but as Rosemarie remembers, “Moving in was relatively easy. I just had to redecorate, repaint kitchen walls and units, and position my furniture.” Having inherited several fine antique pieces from her family, she

a boring view onto the neighbouring blank wall.” Part of the ground floor was already divided into a separate flat when Rosemarie moved in. “This is a huge asset,” she explains, “because I habitually have friends to stay and I like them to feel independent. They can make their own coffee and get out of bed when they want.” True to form, Rosemarie decorated the annex in white with a touch of blue. In her office Rosemarie chose a contemporary style, with a perspex desk and leather chair. “Plants thrive behind the tall glass doors which make the room feel like a conservatory,” she says, “especially as I habitually fill the windows with different plants. It has the best view of the garden.” Rosemarie’s final project will be the transformation of her garden room, due for an upgrade. “My grandchildren will have a say no doubt, because it will be a perfect place for boys computer games on rainy days and for me a peaceful spot to dine on warm evenings.” l Photos: Robert Sanderson/Narratives Styling & Writing: Maggie Colvin/Narratives

HOMES
Dressing up
The right window dressing can transform the look and feel of a room without the need for a complete interior revamp. Take inspiration from the latest trends to redesign your window space, as Hanna Prince explores
C
hoosing the right blinds or curtains can quickly take an interior design scheme from average to amazing. From creating the illusion of a higher ceiling and making a dark room feel brighter to increasing your home’s curb appeal, window dressing is about much more than simply blocking out light. Here’s how to choose the right look for your home. LET THERE BE LIGHT If your room is lacking in light, heavy curtains can compound the situation. Sheer materials offer privacy and cosiness without making a space dingy. Choose a light colour to lift a room, creating an illusion of
airiness, or use floral voile fabric panels for a dreamy feel. Sheer roller blinds are an excellent solution for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways, while long drapes work well in living rooms and bedrooms.
SHUTTERS ARE IN Plantation shutters have taken the hippest districts of London by storm and it won’t be long before you see them in a street near you. Shutters work with both traditional and contemporary interiors, adding an extra degree of privacy and insulation while boosting the aesthetic charm of your property. As an added bonus, they can be adjusted to let in more or less light and to improve ventilation in the room.
other well-used family spaces because they are less likely to collect dust and sticky fingerprints. Any room that has a radiator positioned under the window also lends itself to shorter styles. Another fun option for spaces where privacy is more important than light exclusion is café curtains. These half-length panels work particularly well in kitchens and street-facing living spaces.
PLAYING WITH COLOUR Not sure how to introduce colour while avoiding garishness? Neutral drapes with a colourful trim will bring a touch of interest to the room without dominating the decorating scheme. Prints and patterns are currently trending as well, with abstract geometrics, plantinspired motifs and oversized fabric prints all popular with designers. THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT Choosing the length of your curtains can be even more challenging than picking a colour. Classic long drapes give the illusion of a higher ceiling, but short curtains are a more practical option for kids’ bedrooms and August 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 37
TRACKS AND TIES Once you’ve picked the style and length of your curtains, the next dilemma is how to hang them. Ceiling-mounted curtain tracks offer a streamlined alternative to the traditional curtain pole while also helping a low ceiling feel taller. Tab tops avoid the hassle of rings, while a pelmet will hide fixtures and fittings altogether. Match it with other soft furnishings to create a sleek, modern look. BLINDED BY THE CHOICE? Blinds and shades tend to
be more popular options than curtains in modern homes, partly because there are so many different alternatives to choose from. Traditionally, blinds have individual adjustable slats, while shades are made from a single piece of material. Venetian blinds, roman shades and roller shades all work in almost any setting, while tie-up shades are both on-trend and easy to make at home. Other beautiful styles to consider include woven wicker, bamboo and rattan shades.
BE SMART Modern boilers, lamps and even coffee makers can all be controlled by smartphone – so why not your blinds? Smart blinds are usually voice operated, which means you can open them in the morning without lifting a finger. They can also be programmed to open and shut at different times of the day, a useful security feature if you’re away from home frequently. Don’t want to invest in new drapes? It’s often possible to retrofit your existing blinds with
‘smart’ technology, saving substantially on the cost. DOUBLE UP Curtains or blinds? With the latest designs, there’s no need to choose. Combining roman shades and drapes is a good way to block out light in bedrooms or street-facing living rooms and give reign to your creativity at the same time. Opt for complementing colours – or choose a plain blind that subtly references a shade in your patterned curtains. It’s the best of both worlds. l

he sparkling white spacious interiors of Emma and Gavin’s home are punctuated with bright clear colours to such dazzling visual effect, that it’s hard to imagine how they evolved from the original house as Emma described. “We spotted this relatively modern house online while we were living in Hong Kong,” she explains. “It was part of a gated community which appealed to us and it had a large garden. But it was dark. The kitchen was divided into two small

rooms, and there was a garage where my study is now. All the rooms needed a huge facelift and bringing up to speed, but we felt we could live there initially without having to do any building work.” Emma says the only eyesore was the tumbledown conservatory, tagged onto the dining room. It leaked profusely and faced onto a steep hill, which was gradually being built on by a developer. By the time the family arrived back from Hong Kong and moved in, the view had changed for the worse. “A new house, one of 25, had shot up next door. Seated in the conservatory, we found ourselves facing a newly erected brick wall.” Emma says they tried to improve matters by opening up internal space – taking down a wall dividing the dining area and kitchen. “This sort of helped, but it forced us to realise we needed professional help. “I looked up interior designers and came across some photos of Tor Vivian’s work, of Dobson and Vivian Interior. Instinctively I knew she and I would get on. She obviously loved bright colours and so do I. I loved the way she used a white empty

Graceful coloured vases are grouped on a long low built-in console
We overlook our new bamboo hedge which has grown to exuberant dimensions canvas to spatter with clear breezy colours. She helped me source the entire contents of the house in such a relaxed, unthreatening way. We had left nearly all of our large pieces in Hong Kong, apart from one red lacquered commode, a few Chinese paintings and some blue and white china, so we were starting almost entirely from scratch.” Tor’s partner Andrew Dobson came up with an idea which transformed the house beyond their wildest imagination. His new plan re-orientated the house to face south and onto the garden. The old conservatory was knocked down and a new extension put in its place, introducing three glazed double doors and a line of skylights which now flood the new all in one kitchen/dining/ sitting room with light. Andrew subtly divided the space into three. “It could have looked ghostlike, like an empty warehouse,” says Emma, “but for Andrew’s clever lighting plan and Tor’s furniture layout. The space seems to get lighter the further you move down the room. Andrew never puts spots in a straight line, but places them to link with the furniture plan. Each space has its own character. I love it because we bond here as a family. The children do their homework while I cook and Gavin reads the papers.”

Inspired by the new rural view of their large leafy garden, planted with silver birch, Emma and her children fell in love with the idea of keeping chickens. “It was one of those whims,” says Emma, but the hens are part of the family now. “They even have names, and are so friendly they wander into the kitchen on occasions,” she smiles. Chickens in town are something of a talking point among their friends. “We made sure not to keep a cockerel because they are so noisy.” Both Gavin and Emma have kept the first floor sitting room for themselves. Decorated in the Eastern style they fell in love with in Hong Kong, they enjoy the peace and order of a carefully balanced space. “There is something innately appealing about its geometric symmetry. Pairs of matching sofas and chairs create a feeling of calm comfort. We overlook our new bamboo hedge which has grown to exuberant dimensions. We feel peacefully concealed in an oasis of rural calm. We could be living in the countryside.” l

HAVE YOU GOT THE INSURANCE YOU NEED? “At NFU Mutual Henfield we pride ourselves on taking the necessary time to help make sure we are providing the right level of cover for you to protect your home and contents should the worst happen.” Chets Modi, Agent When did you last walk around your house looking in cupboards to check your contents insurance is adequate? Do you live in a larger, higher-value home, or have a number of expensive items – perhaps jewellery and watches, fine art or collections, or even designer interiors with beautiful curtains and tech. Standard insurance may not be fully protecting you. You may be better protected by an insurance product which enables you to adapt your policy to meet your specific needs – such as agreeing values, increasing cover limits. WHAT IS UNDERINSURANCE? To be ‘underinsured’ means that the amount you’re covered for is less than the cost of rebuilding, replacing, or repairing. For example, if you had a fire at your home, and your ‘sums insured’ is only £30,000, but the actual cost to replace your contents is £100,000 then you’re underinsured and the reality is your policy won’t pay out beyond £30,000, leaving you with a hefty bill. DO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU OWN? Try to take account of the true value of everything you own – both buildings and contents. If you’re unsure of the difference between the two, imagine your house could be lifted off the ground and tipped upside down. Everything that falls out is contents. The rest should be covered by buildings insurance. Also don’t forget about items such as artwork or jewellery that you might have inherited or purchased a long time ago – their value may have changed significantly.
Agent of The National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society Limited.
HOW CAN YOU BE CERTAIN EVERYTHING IS COVERED? Not only does Bespoke insurance from NFU Mutual offer many specialist features as standard, but unlike many other insurers who have moved online, the team at NFU Mutual value a real conversation with you to fully understand your needs, enabling them to tailor cover right down to the finest detail. Take time to walk around your house and use the list below as a guide to the contents you need to be insured for. Remember, you should look at how much items are to replace from new as in the event of a claim you can get new for old cover. Exclusions may apply. Living room:

BLOOMING TIMES
QUEEN OF THE
BLUES Coming in every shade from darkest inky purple to purest white, no summer garden is complete without the extraordinary blooms of agapanthus, writes Flo Whitaker
A
gapanthus are native to South Africa but they’ve spread themselves all over that continent – and much of the world besides. They’ve picked up many different names in their travels, including African Lily, Queen Lily and Nile Lily. This is a classic example of how confusing things can be when you stray off the botanical classification path. Agapanthus doesn’t naturally occur by the Nile, nor is it a lily; it’s a member of the amaryllis family. A warm, well-lit spot is what agapanthus craves. They’ll enjoy a sunny border location in gravelly soil. However, their long, succulent leaves can easily dominate the scene and smother surrounding plants (to be honest, the leaves alone are not terribly interesting to look at), so they are best grown in
58 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2020
containers where they will enjoy free-draining conditions and their foliage is less likely to encroach onto neighbours. Another advantage of growing agapanthus in pots is that they can be moved into prominent positions as they come into flower, then relegated to the sidelines as the blooms fade. These drought-tolerant characters will also relish the heat rising up from sun-baked patio paving.
The belief that agapanthus prefers an overcrowded root system and a starvation diet is wrong. Just because they’ll survive on neglect doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give them decent conditions to thrive. Soil type is critical; it sounds perverse but it should be damp, but also free-draining. A mixture of 70% peat-free potting soil combined with a scoop of moistureretaining leaf mould and 30% horticultural grit is ideal – the grit will prevent water pooling around the fleshy roots which are prone to rot. A springtime feed of multipurpose fertiliser will give them a boost, but don’t
A warm, well-lit spot is what agapanthus craves
overfeed as that will create lush foliage at the expense of flowers. Agapanthus need repotting every few years, preferably in spring. It’s a brutal process, as they make impenetrable spaghettilike roots that cannot be teased apart. Employ a sharp kitchen knife (and a steady nerve) and slice through the rootball from top to bottom, cutting it into chunks. Ensure each piece has a healthy growing shoot attached and discard any material that looks old and tired. Repot into fresh compost, leaving soil spaces between each segment for new roots to grow into. In southern England, most agapanthus varieties will be hardy. Herbaceous types (they lose the majority of their leaves and semihibernate during winter) are tough characters and will survive all weathers, including salt-laden gales, which is why they are such favourites in coastal areas. Tender varieties retain their leaves and can be damaged by frost, so are best overwintered in a cool greenhouse. Whatever you choose to call them, the stunning architectural blooms of agapanthus will grace any garden. l

GARDENING
Well known for his presence on Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time, Bob Flowerdew speaks to Ruth Lawrence on the love of his profession, his links to Sussex and his handy gardening tips
FORCE OF
L
Nature
ast year, two of the team at Sussex Living were lucky enough to see this expert gardener speak of his experiences during a talk at Henfield Hall, one of many events Bob Flowerdew has done in the county over the years. I was keen to find out more about this witty character. The son of a farmer, Bob’s family have worked the soil since Tudor times and the name Flowerdew was first found in Norfolk where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. It originates from the Flemish ‘Fleur de Dieu’ or ‘Flower of God’, likely referring to flax flowers. Bob was born in a house without electricity, but power arrived about three years later, shortly before his brother. As a small boy Bob was given his own little garden and still has a photo of himself standing in his small plot, a precursor to how his life would eventually unfold. He recalls discovering a patch of four-leaf clover plants and dreamt of getting on to the panel of Gardeners’ Question Time,
which was first broadcast in 1947. Surprisingly, Bob didn’t study horticulture at college; he began an engineering course, but soon changed to business studies. After graduating in financial management, he travelled widely around North America and Europe, becoming a passionate Francophile, returning again and again to pick grapes for one family for over a decade. Their chateau produced prizewinning wine and, after a fortnight’s work, he would leave for home with a couple of bottles of Brouilly, which in the 1970s was a premier Beaujolais Cru. Bob first encountered the organic movement as a child and once older, he realised the significance of their research. He followed natural science authors who recommended personal trial and experimentation to discover a personal route to organic gardening. As an enthusiastic wildlife gardener Bob encourages people to find ways to work with nature, believing that to help our flora and fauna, we must take entire life cycles into account. August 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 61
Butterflies are an obvious example; Bob noticed most books concentrate on recommending certain flowers as butterfly food, but neglected the fact that larva, caterpillars and grubs require suitable food plants of their own. He realised that we need to grow a wider diversity of plants to feed different caterpillars. In one of his books Bob notes “plants do not exist independently in isolation, but are but one part of a huge intricate web of lives, animal and vegetable, big and small.” The co-existence of creatures that live on Bob champions or with plants have been seen as ‘unwelcome intruders’ or ‘pests’ in the past and now this ingenuity in belief has been challenged. Bob believes we the garden and need to fully understand the ways that flora and encourages people fauna interact with the plants we wish to grow. Encouraging natural controls will then reduce to reuse, recycle our perception of pest and disease problems. and invent Bob champions ingenuity in the garden and encourages people to re-use, recycle and invent. While travelling in Cuba, he found a rabbit fence made from a stripped-down radio chassis that had been wired together, as well as a gate constructed from redundant tools. Bob loves the way lateral thinking and recycling can be combined to aid the experimental gardener. He uses discarded Venetian blinds for plant labels, writing with felt pen on six-inch lengths which are perfect for a clear view of a plant’s name. Beer cans yield a handy aluminium tube once the ends have been removed, protecting seedlings from slugs who do not like climbing over the metal. They can be made even more effective by using pinking shears to form a spiky top edge. Plastic bottles have long been used as cloches but Bob prefers to cut the top and bottom off to use them
62 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2020
as tubes that will keep wind off vulnerable seedlings, without overheating or stunting their growth. To water plants more slowly Bob recommends a plastic bottle of water with a pinhole near the base. Loosen the cap to ease the water out gently over time. It’s handy for badly dried out containers and baskets. Rather than shred prunings using power, he recommends wrapping bundles of them with paper, card then plastic to construct open ended dry niches to place in hedges or evergreens for insects to nest in. Even old wellies find a second life in Bob’s garden; cut a long spiral strip an inch wide from the leg and use as tree ties. The stub of the foot part can be suspended toe down in a hedge with the ankle open to make a nest site for a robin, remembering to put a hole in the toe for drainage. When the kids have grown up, don’t throw away their outgrown trampoline; it can be used, as Bob suggests, as a perfectly
proportioned frame for a fruit cage or plastic covered greenhouse. Bob, like nature itself, sees everything as a useful resource and his repurposing of the humblest household items make it difficult to throw anything away again. His inventiveness extends to making raised bedding walls from unwanted books by dipping them in a slurry of dirty water, compost and cement, before assembling low walls that can even be used to grow mushroom spawn. Bob is keen to promote continued enjoyment of home grown produce after the harvest has finished. He believes in preserving, pickling, storing, bottling and juicing the fruits of the season’s labours. Bob’s love of home-grown invention peppers our conversation and he sees repurposing as “adding to the delightful variety of the world.” With a dedicated following and two dozen published books, Bob’s forward-thinking vision towards an organic way of living is compelling and impossible to ignore. Curious, inventive and outspoken, he has introduced millions to a more natural, self-reliant way to garden and improve their relationship with nature in the process. l www.bobflowerdew.com

HARTFIELD
F
WALK
rom the car park, head north, along the track into Posingford Wood for about 300m, before turning right at the fingerpost by the felled timber. Follow the left hand field boundary to the track, before turning right and walking uphill for 200m. Cross the all weather canter track via the two gates then walk across the paddock, before crossing the canter track once again via two more gates. Cross the stile, which immediately leads to the road. Look carefully before crossing; drivers will not be expecting walkers to pop out of the hedge. Once across the road, turn left, and walk towards the traffic for almost 150m, before dropping down the path on the right, by the white stone sign. The path barrels downhill into Five Hundred Acre Wood, then across a footbridge adjacent to an old boiler. Keep walking through the beeches, silver birches, and other deciduous trees for half a mile to the beginning of the tarmac. Continue for almost half a mile along the tarmac, before veering left by the fingerpost marked with the ‘WW’ logo. March across the intersection then, while keeping to the right of the gate, follow the path along the left hand boundary of the field, all the way to the stile at Fisher’s Gate. Turn right and follow the lane north for a mile, passing a pretty thatched house along the way. By the fingerpost marked for the ‘Wealdway + Landscape Trail,’ turn left, climb over the stile and head downhill, diagonally across the field towards Bog Shaw. The path leads through the woods, emerging by a bridge over the Mill Brook. Beyond the gateway, keep right and follow the fence line on the right, across the field to the distant gate. 66 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2020
As lockdown measures continue to ease, Robert Veitch headed for a delightful bimble around the gently undulating hinterland of Hartfield with his friend Claire
The path barrels downhill into Five Hundred Acre Wood Once through the gate, veer left and at the next open gateway, bear left by the three-way fingerpost. “Just look at the glorious colours of the grasses and wildflowers,” noted Claire with a smile. After 300m there is a stile beneath the remains of a dead tree that resembles the grim reaper’s scythe. Beyond the stile follow the field boundary, alongside the ripening purple haze of flax, or ‘Jimi Hendrix field’ as Claire called it. The next stile leads across a small field to another stile, beyond which is the charming St. Mary the Virgin Church, Hartfield (which is well worth a few minutes exploration). Turn left and wander past the idyllic properties to the High Street. Turn left, past the war memorial and delightful bus stop. Look up for the clock
and down for the 1962 best-kept village plaque. Claire noted the abundance of flowers along the High Street, “Hartfield is still living up to its reputation.” Keep bimbling along the High Street, bearing right towards Forest Row at the far end of the village. Cross to the south side of the road by the 40mph sign and mighty oak, then walk up the hill along the pavement. After a quarter of a mile, turn left into the stone entrance by the fingerpost. Take the concrete path behind the wooden gate and the sign for ‘Pooh Bridge’ written in AngloJapanese. Follow the path beside a post and rail fence, then a green mesh fence, to the top of the incline. At the top, turn right and follow the path behind the houses for 250m to the kissing gate and tarmac drive. Follow the drive for a third of a mile, before turning left at the t-junction. 50m later, hop over the stile on the right. Follow the path beside the blackberries, then into the trees. Ignore the gate marked ‘private’ and emerge at the gate that leads downhill into a field. At the bottom of the field and the six sleeper steps, cross the stile and turn right. to another stile, then left down the asphalt track for 100m, turning right by an 8ft high gatepost. The tarmac path leads downhill to a bench, where we enjoyed some of Claire’s excellent rock cakes and admired the view to Gill’s Lap across the valley. Continue downhill, gradually easing right, then across the footbridge to meet the road at Marsh Green. Turn left and wander uphill for 350m, following the footpath straight on as the road turns right by the gateposts adorned with horse heads. The path leads through the woods and ferns for 400m, back to the car park, after which it must surely be time to find some well-earned refreshments. l Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. LOCAL CULTURE
With lockdown easing gradually, Robert Veitch investigates some of the most elevated inland destinations in the county that are worth exploring this summer
Hitting The High Points Alfriston
Little known fact: It’s no urban myth. Once in a blue moon Crowborough can become gridlocked from flurries of snowfall while the rest of the county is bathed in sunshine.
Elevation: 10m (33 feet) Why is somewhere with such a low elevation on this list you ask? Rise up and follow the South Downs Way east towards Windover Hill and Wilmington Hill, or west towards Bostal Hill and Firle Beacon, and the answer is found in the spectacular views. Alfriston nestles in the Cuckmere Valley and a wander down the High Street reveals timber framed and tile hung properties, some dating from the 14th century. St Andrew’s Church on the Tye is affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Downs. Round off a visit with a trip to a local vineyard.
Hidden gem: On May 10 this year, local resident Anna Louise Dix began a COVID-19 painted stone snake on Chapel Green and challenged other residents to contribute. It’s grown to about 400m in length and contains in the region of 6,000 stones. Residents named the snake after their inspiration… Anna-Conda.
Heathfield
Little known fact: Eleanor Farjeon wrote Morning has Broken in Alfriston in 1931. Cat Stevens had a worldwide hit with his version in 1972. Hidden gem: The Church of the Good Shepherd at Lullington is the smallest church in Sussex, and well worth the half mile hike up the hill.
Crowborough Elevation: 242m (794 feet) Once home to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sir David Jason, celebrities who reside there today include Cate Blanchett and Kerry Katona. Past visitors would stay at one of the elegant Victorian hotels. In those days Crowborough had the feel of a health resort, of being ‘Scotland in Sussex.’ It was a place for recuperation and
Cissbury Ring
relaxation at altitude in ‘clear air’ among pines trees. Sadly, those hotels are long gone, but it remains the highest town in Sussex with a smattering of places to eat and drink. The ‘Scotland in Sussex’ vibe endures on the nearby 6,100 acres of Ashdown Forest. Anna-Conda
Elevation: 154m (505 feet) Heathfield sits on a ridge equidistant from Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne, at the northern end of the Cuckoo Trail. Being on a ridge made Heathfield a favourable location for windmills, and up to eight were functioning during the 19th century. Chicken fattening was popular with Victorians; skinny birds would arrive by train to be fed sour milk, ground oats and rendered fats. The industry died out in the 1960s with the advent of the broiler chicken. Modern visitors won’t go hungry because there’s at least 15 places to eat out, which is a tummyrumbling good ratio for a population of around 10,000 people. Hidden Gem: The top of the Heathfield Transmitting Station is just under 300m or 975 feet above sea level. August 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 69
Hidden gem: The view of the town from Jean Kinsella’s seat in Steyning Coombe is well worth the effort to get there.
Mayfield Elevation: 143m (469 feet) Mayfield is recorded in the Domesday Book, though it was the iron industry that brought wealth to the village and the construction of many fine buildings that still stand in the High Street. The
Steyning
Little known fact: Rumours of oil beneath Heathfield was investigated in 1955 after seven test holes were drilled. Natural gas was discovered but not enough to warrant commercial development.
Steyning Elevation: 12m (39 feet) The chocolate box town of Steyning occupies a gap in the South Downs close to the River Adur. Above it both Truleigh Hill and Chanctonbury
Ring are obvious landmarks, offering wonderful panoramic 360 degree views. The High Street is a delightful amble, with timber framed buildings, boutique shops, and choice of refreshments. The bypass follows the route of the old railway, reducing traffic flow in the town and helping to preserve that old world charm. Little known fact: The current clock tower and three-faced octagonal clock in the High Street has been in position since 1848.

railway arrived in the 19th century and closed in the 20th after the Beeching Report. The bypass follows the route of those long dismantled tracks, and the station building was converted into a private dwelling.
Little known fact: Dave Gilmour, Ben Elton and Engelbert Humperdinck have all owned properties in the village over the years. Hidden gem: The John Crossman memorial is a mile from the village centre and a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War Two.
Little known fact: The original Doctor Who, William Hartnell, moved to Newick Lane in the 1960s and lived locally for several years. The Time Lord and his Tardis travelled to a more heavenly place in 1975.
Cissbury Ring Elevation: 184m (600 feet) Four miles north of Worthing and a mile east of Findon are the 200 acres of Cissbury Ring. The domed chalk hill and the ditches that encircle the site are home to the remains of what was the largest Iron Age hill fort in Sussex. It’s a lovely place to walk around and on a clear day, the Isle of Wight to the west, and Beachy Head to the east, are both visible.
Hidden gem: The village sign is the oldest in Sussex, having been erected in 1922.
Forest Row Elevation: 70m (231 feet) The northern gateway to Ashdown Forest resides on a tributary of the River Medway. Home to 5,000 people, the centre of the village is populated by a multitude of independent shops, places to eat and places to drink. The railway closed in 1967, but its’ legacy survives on the Forest Way, which makes for pleasant walks towards East Grinstead or Hartfield. American President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 visit is commemorated with a plaque on the wall of Freshfield Hall in the village centre.
Little known fact: A gun was positioned here during World War Two to help prevent invasion from across the English Channel.
John Crossman Memorial
Hidden gem: A small string of semi-wild New Forest ponies graze the area; they should be left alone and admired from a distance.

In the mood for a summer picnic? Jamie Crow lists his ideal lunch basket of local produce
I
t’s a wonderful time of year to get out with the family and enjoy a summer picnic in a local beauty spot, a secret hideaway, or among the glorious South Downs. But one of the biggest challenges is always what to put in the picnic hamper. With more and more shops open, there’s never been a more important time to support your local independents. With plenty of delicious local produce available to buy on your doorstep, lets go shopping!
LOVE YOUR
local food
The main constituent of any good always a good option. Much of the meat picnic is the sandwich and Sussex is found in local farm shops tends to be full of independent family run bakeries descended from Sussex cattle, a historic and delicatessens. Its surprisingly easy breed recorded as far back as 1066 by to get your hands on delicious artisan the invading Normans. The meat is bread. Many bakers produce homemade hung for 28 days for tenderness. Enjoy sourdough, which is lighter than most it with a cheese selection; Cheshire, breads and has a fluffy inner texture. Cheddar and Charlton Artisan breads are arguably healthier are all delicious, hard than their factory made counterparts as cheeses, of which the yeast is given more time to break down the gluten during production. Sussex is abundant When it comes to the filling, locally-reared beef is with country fruits
various versions are produced in the east and west of the county. No picnic is complete without a nice piece of pie, and one of the most popular varieties in Sussex is pork. These succulent pies can be found at many farm shops in the county. Pies pair well with homemade chutneys or pickles, available in many high streets and at farmers markets. If you prefer a healthier feast, Sussex is abundant with country fruits. Among a huge selection, apples, cherries, blackberries, pears, plums and strawberries all grow locally and a countryside fruit salad is perfect for the sunny weather. Ask a local greengrocer for a variety pack, or try pick-your-own at a local farm, which the kids will love. If you decide on an alcoholic beverage with lunch, Sussex is famous for its ales, but if that doesn’t take your fancy, there’s also a large selection of ciders, wines, gins, vermouths and more. If you prefer a soft drink try a locally produced apple juice, lemonade, ginger ale or ginger beer. Good luck enjoying the delights of the Sussex countryside with your picnic hamper this summer. Keep the food miles down, and the magic intact... Just remember to pick up your rubbish before you leave! l August 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 73

SUMMER TREATS With summer in full swing, Gillian Reay-Young shares these recipes for a family paella and refreshing sorbet to enjoy in the sun
METHOD 1 Shell most of the mussels and peel most of the prawns (if using fresh), leaving a few for decoration later. 2 Remove the cooked lobster meat from the shell and dice, keeping the claws for decoration later. 3P ut the olive oil in a large paella dish or frying pan and sauté the garlic, onion and pepper for five minutes until soft but not browned. 4 Add the chopped tomatoes and the diced chicken (and pork). Lightly brown the meat. 5S tir in the rice and most of the stock, leaving a little to blend the saffron powder before adding to the mixture. Season to taste (if using stock cubes instead of chicken stock, then a little salt will be needed). 6 Bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce and simmer for approximately 20 minutes, until the rice is just cooked and the meat is tender. 7 Stir in the mussels, peeled prawns, lobster meat and peas, and simmer for a further eight to ten minutes. 8S erve the paella with a few strips of raw red/green pepper and the lobster claw, plus a few whole cooked prawns and cooked mussels in their shells scattered over the top. 9 Serve indoors or alfresco, with a mixed salad and perhaps some garlic bread.

Paella INGREDIENTS 8 mussels 100g (3½ oz) peeled prawns 1 small cooked lobster 600g (1lb 5oz) diced chicken breasts (pork, or a mixture of pork and
chicken works well too) 4 tbsp olive oil 2 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 onion, chopped 1 red or green pepper, chopped and seeded 4 tomatoes, peeled and chopped 350g (12 oz) long grain rice 1.3l (2¼ pints) chicken stock 100g (3½ oz) peas (frozen are fine) A little saffron and seasoning
GIN & TONIC SORBET INGREDIENTS 170g (6 oz) of caster sugar Zest and juice of 2 limes 6 tbsp of gin 425ml (¾ pint) tonic water (NOT diet) Fresh lime and mint to decorate METHOD 1D issolve the sugar into 425ml (¾ pint) of water over a moderate heat. 2 Stir in the juice, zest and skin of the limes, then boil

for five minutes, or until its reduced. 3 Put to one side to cool, then squeeze out the peel and strain. 4 Add the tonic water and gin, then put the liquid into a freezer container (I recycle an old ice cream carton) and freeze. 5 Remove the container from the freezer and beat the mixture until creamy in texture, then return it to

the freezer until its time to serve. 6 Serve in a glass with a little grated lime peel and a spray of fresh mint. Alcohol does not freeze in domestic freezers, so the more gin you include, the slushier it will be. However, it does have a wonderfully fresh taste! Note: This recipe is suitable for adults only.

he New Inn reopened on the 4th July with much more than a new paint job. As well as our safe, social distancing arrangements we have a great new team of experienced chefs in the kitchen who themselves trade as Brambles Sussex. Their aim, apart from delivering the very best food, is sustainability with home grown vegetables and salads from our very own garden and fresh ingredients sourced only from local suppliers. Their menu is refreshingly different, exciting, and caters for all tastes and requirements. We hope to welcome you to The New Inn soon. Do come and join us in the garden for a glass of wine from our new summer wine list. During August we will be participating in the Governments ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ food initiative. Booking isn’t compulsory but helpful and assists with ‘track and trace’.
This is what some of our customers have had to say since we restarted: “Since reopening last weekend we’ve been in twice and the outstanding difference is the food - it was good before but so far, it’s been amazing! So fresh, tasty and well presented” “A wonderful and deliciously tasty first time out on Saturday. A truly fantastic and inspired menu from Brambles at The New Inn, Hurstpierpoint. A safe, clean and beautiful environment. Thank you to all the staff and the talented chefs. We shall return” “This was our first experience of venturing out for supper and it was exceptionally good. The large garden made social distancing easy and there were plenty of staff who were very helpful. Food exceeded expectations, hake cerviche was delicious, as was cheesecake with sour apple sorbet” “Brilliant place! Went on the ‘re- opening ‘ night on 4th July 2020, and was seriously impressed by the re-design for physical distancing’” “Very friendly and it felt very safe”

SHOPPING
Love your local shops Jamie Crow notes some of the great items to buy locally, at a time when independent businesses need our custom more than ever before
T
here’s something about shopping at a local market or farm shop that feels more authentic than your average supermarket or high street chain. In Sussex, we are lucky to be blessed with a variety of local businesses selling seasonal items and produce. As these enterprises navigate their way out of the situation we’ve all faced this year, it’s more important than ever that we help to keep our local shops afloat. Try shopping for clothes at an independent; Sussex has a substantial number of small boutiques, offering
78 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2020
bespoke designer clothes, each made to make you look unique. If you enjoy artistic creativity, a piece original artwork from a local artist adds a distinctive look to any home. If you want to brighten your home with a splash of colour, then try some of the county’s many florists. Rather than doing the weekly food dash at a supermarket, try the local farm shops, butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers scattered throughout the region. You’ll almost certainly be purchasing food produced in fields nearby. A trip to a rural village can be both a shopping trip and some well spent time-out. If
you’re out for lunch, visit the local pub and try the Sussex ales. And don’t forget the vineyards and distilleries popping up across the landscape, many of which are award-winning. Another thing to appreciate when you shop local is the great customer service. If you’re able to; cycle or walk to your local shops, breathing in the
fresh air along the way, enjoying the exercise as you go. Rejoice in leaving the car behind, because it’s good to reduce your carbon footprint bit by bit. And finally... always remember to take a reusable bag! l

Shades of Summer Zesty orange, sherbet lemon and exotic saffron: Lisa de Silva takes us through the essential colours of the season
B
anish lockdown boredom with some moodboosting colour and dip into fashion’s summer palette of bold and beautiful shades. These bright colours will revive your optimism and ignite your energy, reflecting those long hot days of summer. Here we take a look at the shades on trend for August, with some tips on how to wear them. Confidently making its way straight from the runway to a store near you, expect to see flame scarlet everywhere. Great for those who want to make a bold statement, it looks good with tanned skin
and matching lipstick. Alternatively, bright zesty orange, sherbet lemon and the more exotic saffron look fabulous on darker skins and are guaranteed to put a zing in your step. Inspired by the environment, green stays perennially popular but this summer the trend is for chive, a darker and richer shade than the sage and olives of past years. If you prefer a cooler, more refreshing colour, try Biscay green, a subtle shade of aqua. Or for feminine vibes try on parma violet and coral pink. For those intimidated by colour, cinnamon stick is a rich brown neutral, which goes well with animal print. In fact, neutrals are a great choice for containing those hyper brights. Simply add a pop of colour with a well-chosen accessory as you head out into the sunshine. l

For a deeper clean, use a chemical exfoliator which uses a blend of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to keep skin glowing and healthy. WELLBEING
Lisa de Silva offers some advice for those who may be facing work struggles during these uncertain times
Wellbeing IN THE
Workplace W
hether paid or unpaid, work is an important component of our wellbeing, providing us with a sense of purpose, improving our confidence and self-esteem. In an ideal world our work feels valued and meaningful, yet in recent years workrelated stress and anxiety has become a growing trend. Many of us struggle to attain a good work/life balance and this has been compounded by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. With many businesses forced to close, remote working has become commonplace but the demands of working from home can be just as complicated as going out to work. To help you navigate these challenges and uncertainties, we’ve put together some general advice to protect and improve your wellbeing at work, along with some specific tips for remote working. DEALING WITH PROBLEMS Knowing how you work best and being aware of your personal stress triggers is a useful place to start improving your wellbeing at work. Triggers could include tight deadlines, heavy workload, conflicts with colleagues and general organisational change. Once you’ve 86 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2020
identified potential issues, talk to your manager about extra support in that area which might include negotiating deadlines with you before they are set, delegating certain tasks to other colleagues or having extra training. It’s important to be transparent and have both a clear channel of communication and a feedback system in place to discuss what is and isn’t working. Try to work towards shared solutions. Developing a nonjudgemental culture and supportive atmosphere will also help to minimise work-related stress. TIME AND SPACE Wherever you are working it is important to work defined hours and take regular breaks. If you prefer to take three 20-minute breaks rather than an hour for lunch, or two 30-minute breaks, ask for more flexibility. During your breaks try to practise some self-care; talk to a colleague about non-work matters, stretch, enjoy a coffee, listen to some music or take a short walk. Also, do try to keep your work space clean and tidy - plants, photographs and personal mementoes are all positive mood enhancers. l
Remote Working Tips
1
Structure your day with specific times for work to maintain the distinction between personal and professional life.
2
If using collaborative working platforms develop a feedback system to ensure optimum efficiency.
3
Address any issues as they arise with your line manager and instigate a weekly feedback session.
4
Create a virtual support group with colleagues to overcome social isolation – scheduling coffee breaks helps to maintain a sense of community.
5 6 7
If necessary, ask for greater flexibility to accommodate home schooling or childcare. Prioritise good hydration, nutrition, exercise and sleep.
If you enjoy remote working consider combining it with a return to the workplace.

t’s been the most unusual experience of my life,” says Dr Frank Gray, director of Screen Archive South East. He’s been telling me about different experiences during lockdown, after collecting a number of films detailing life in the last couple of months in West Sussex. Two particular films he highlighted show Horsham in full lockdown, and enjoying socially distanced celebrations on VE Day. In the former the streets are deserted. “You would almost think you were looking at a science-fiction film,” said Frank. “It’s just a typical Sussex town, but with the absence of pretty much everyone.” In contrast, the latter shows neighbours in a busy street dancing in rhythm to war time music. “There is a lovely energy to the VE Day event,” Frank added. “It’s symbolic of this special moment in time.” The archive is one of three organisations which has been collecting lockdown content since April in an attempt to capture the current atmosphere in Sussex for future generations to study. It’s a rare opportunity for an archivist, according to Frank, to have such a rare piece of history right now. “We have films
It’s symbolic of this special moment in time dating as far back as the 1890s,” he said. “So as you can imagine, it’s very difficult to talk to anyone who was actually there. Now we have an opportunity to document this while it’s happening. It’s a career highlight and a personal highlight for me, it’s really unprecedented.” The Novium Museum in Chichester and the West Sussex Record Office are the other two organisations taking part, with the record office gathering the bulk of digital content. Some significant examples so far include photographs of local shop signs providing information about COVID-19 closures and
socially distanced shopping queues. The office has also received diaries relating personal experiences during lockdown, and even a time capsule from a ten-yearold girl, which records how she felt about the experience and how she celebrated events such as Easter and birthdays. They’re also looking at examples of how people have adapted to the lockdown. Wendy Walker, West Sussex county archivist, told me about Dr Tim Fooks, the new West Sussex High Sheriff, who had his confirmation ceremony in his own living room. “It had to be done over Zoom!” she says. At the end of the day, the aim of the project is all about bringing the county closer together. “I think it’s so important and it is also something families can do together,” added Wendy. “This is about recording the experiences of individual communities and helping people in the present. It’s such a strange time, but such an opportunity too to become part of history. We didn’t want to miss that.” l PHOTO BY TIM HUDSON; REPRODUCED WITH THE PERMISSION OF WEST SUSSEX RECORD OFFICE

Things seem to be heading back to a sense of normal for ‘Them Indoors’, but there’s only one thing on Teddy’s mind: getting a decent haircut. As ever, Helen Stockton interprets his thoughts
It’s a Dog’s Life
O
ne of the big steps back to normality in our household has been the return to the hairdressers. ‘Her Indoors’ had an appointment cancelled right at the beginning of lockdown, so she went for the longest without professional attention to her coiffure. That sharp, edgy, asymmetric cut, really didn’t look good a few months down the line, and those home colour kits just don’t cover the grey as effectively as the salon treatments. At the slightest hint of the hairdressers reopening, she was in touch, pleading her case. When she was offered an appointment, she would have cancelled almost anything to get there, and I have to say she does look a lot better. I did hear somewhere that hairdressing clientele were being encouraged not to talk too much for hygiene reasons. I wasn’t there, because dogs aren’t invited, but I’m guessing that didn’t happen. ‘Her Indoors’ and her stylist had a lot to catch up on. ‘Him Indoors’ hasn’t been near a salon for years. He isn’t a long-haired hippy, although he did flirt briefly with the idea of growing a ponytail for fun when there was nothing better to do. Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

MONEY MATTERS
Case Law Robin Stevenson reports on the evolution of Case law, its effect on the tax system over time, and the reason it’s also used to help formulate new legislation
T
ax cases form a valuable part of our tax system, they support the tax system and help fill in the inevitable gaps in the written legislation. Inevitable because one person’s definitions, interpretations and situations differ from the next person.
When casually reading the tax statutes, as you do, they might seem very clear, but once we start to use those rules, we find ourselves starting to question whether the legislation applies to the particular situation we’re dealing with. If we examine the tax legislation, really scrutinise it with a critical eye looking for certainty, we can soon begin to run into problems. The problems haven’t necessarily come about due to poor drafting of the tax
Some cases are brought about because of genuine lack of clarity
legislation, but rather the complex and changing lives we lead and, in no small part, our language and how flexible it is. A hearing at a tax tribunal or court might occur where HMRC and the taxpayer have differing interpretations of the tax legislation and how it applies to the situation in hand, and having reached a stalemate the only course of action left is to approach the tribunal, and later the courts, to make an impartial decision. Some cases are brought about because of genuine lack of clarity in the tax legislation, others because one side or the other have deliberately pushed the current interpretation to the extreme, maybe to fit their own situation. Because tax cases make up a large part of our tax system it follows that certain cases will be part of any tax student’s syllabus and I remember having to learn, among others, the cases relating to the “badges of trade.” Any hook that helped me to remember the cases, whether it be a large consignment of toilet rolls (Rutledge v Inland Revenue) or involving a household name like Norman Wisdom
(Wisdom v Chamberlain), was most welcome. It struck me at the time that the cases I had to learn were from long ago, the Rutledge case dates back to 1929, but were still being used to add clarity and support the written tax law. And this still happens now; if a particular piece of tax legislation hasn’t been changed and the tax case still provides the necessary clarity then it stands the test of time and its decision is used to settle a dispute today. Tax cases are being heard daily, each discussing and analysing different parts of the tax system, each adding to the complexity, adding fine detail, adding another facet to our dynamic and fast moving tax system as it tries to keep pace with modern life. Most tax cases are mundane or esoteric and don’t get widely reported, often because the circumstances are so similar to a previous case and are therefore quickly decided, whereas other cases can attract a lot of attention and change our perspective, some even cause new tax law to be especially written. As much as case law is of great interest to me and can have significant bearing upon our tax system we must not forget the people involved. It’s true that a fair amount of well-known names have been involved in various tribunal and court cases over the years, but the majority involve ordinary members of the public and small businesses. The stresses of being involved in a tax dispute and the uncertainty of the outcome must not be underestimated. Sometimes the tax system can seem unfair so I always spare a thought for the people involved. l
