Sussex Living Magazine is published monthly by: Sussex Living Ltd 128 High Street, Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex BN6 9PX
Editor’s comment Thanks for picking up the August issue of Sussex Living – fi ngers crossed you are reading it in the sunshine! With lovely long hot days there is a defi nite holiday vibe in the air, and despite the temptation to just eat ice cream, I think we have produced a corker of an issue for you this month. Ruth Lawrence met up with Trevor de Silva, who shared the story of how he broke into the fi lm industry. A really inspiring read, pages 8 to 10 have all the details. Having told the story of Sussex wine in our April issue, I have now discovered the history of Sussex beer. Read the story from page 38, but be warned, you will defi nitely want to go and seek out your local brew afterwards! Gary and I had a great morning shooting the cover of this month’s mag – many thanks to the Hop Yard Brewing Co for letting us use their venue. I would like to welcome our new food writer, Tori Stevens. With a young family and busy household, Tori will be providing us with delicious family-friendly meals. Enjoy her Tuna Niçoise recipe on page 34. Walking around Haywards Heath today, you would hardly believe that once, a great and bloody battle took place there; it was the year 1642, and the action all happened on Muster Green. Roger Linn researched this fascinating story, told in full from page 62. Lisa de Silva also stepped back in time this month, to Burgess Hill where she discovered the great work of the benefactress, Emily Temple. Pages 30 and 31 have the story. We also have all our regulars, from health and beauty, gardening and the walk, as well as a super Summer Quiz (p.50) to test the old gray matter! Thanks to our readers and advertisers from all the team here, and get ready for our Education Special in September.

We were walking the crest towards Chanctonbury Ring when I saw what I assumed to be a buzzard soaring on an evening thermal, rising slowly without a single beat of its large, spreading wings. A longer look revealed its red brown body and deeply forked tail; this was a bird I’d not knowingly seen outside the Chilterns-a magnificent Red Kite. Once home, research revealed that Red Kites are being seen regularly across Sussex; birds who may have been born further north are now breeding further afield and young kites often go ‘walkabout’ outside their territory in their first year, usually returning to breed. In the 16th century, Kites were common in London, scavenging on the city’s rubbish but during the 19th century they became extinct in England and Scotland, poisoned, persecuted and prey to relentless egg collectors. Thanks to a concentrated international effort, five young Red Kites from Northern Spain were released into a quiet valley in the Chilterns during the late summer of 1989 and now, two thousand pairs of these mesmerising flyers populate our country. A glance at the Sussex Ornithological Society sightings page revealed some poetic glimpses across Sussex; “Red Kite over Friston Forest gallops,” “Red Kite flying east over Falmer Pond” and the delightful “Red Kite being harassed by single crow over supermarket”. Clearly, this beautiful scavenger and opportunistic predator is now gracing our skies with its five foot wing span and light body, enabling those long, soaring, motionless flights across country.
Shakespeare gave one a mention in The Winter’s Tale; when people used to dry clothes on hedges, his line “when the kite builds, look to lesser linen” would have made sense of an unusual phenomenon. Reports of disappearing clothing from washing lines has revealed that Kites often use soft, available materials such as stolen tea towels, underwear or flags to insulate their large nests, sometimes combined with scavenged paper and plastic woven between twigs. Gregarious birds, they can form large groups, as anyone travelling up the M4 will have witnessed; although they mainly feast on carrion and worms, they will swoop on small mammals and often fly in unison, pair bonding with a mate. They live into their teens and have reached the age of thirty in the wild; I wonder if any of the original reintroduced youngsters still roam English skies? Although reintroduction of extinct native species is a controversial topic, I imagine that restoring a top predator to its original home can only increase biodiversity and help in another, less easy to define sense. People need success stories, tangible proof that our species can make something better and right a previous wrong. What better symbol could there be than a soaring, winged messenger, wheeling slowly over the Sussex downs in gentle evening light?
From five young Red Kites, two thousand pairs of these mesmerising flyers populate our country
With piercing eyes and a distinct deeply forked tail, the Red Kite is making a welcome return to the Sussex Downs.

A Royal
e c n e i r e p x E g n i t i r W From an early interest in cinema, through a career in advertising, Trevor de Silva has finally achieved his childhood ambition to become a screenwriter, with the release of the romantic comedy A Royal Night Out. Read on to discover his journey.
As a teenager, Trevor de Silva had a healthy obsession for all things film. He’d visit his local cinema twice a week, unconsciously setting in motion a passion that would eventually fulfil his future ambitions. He chose to work in advertising partly because, like director Ridley Scott, he saw it as a stepping-stone into the film industry. In his early thirties, Trevor began writing speculative film scripts during evenings and weekends. A few years later he had the ‘good fortune’ to be fired from his advertising job, giving him a financial cushion and a year’s grace to break into the film industry. Two spec scripts helped find him an agent. He then pitched and sold an idea at the Cannes Film Festival, for an animated family comedy, Police Dog. During this time he also turned his hand to directing with the short film Would

Like To Meet. By now he had come to the attention of Ecosse Films, the production company responsible for the feature of John Lennon’s early life, Nowhere Boy. Back in 2006 Ecosse were contemplating a story about the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret escaping the palace to celebrate VE Day. Trevor was invited to submit a four-page treatment for a potential script. Shortly before Christmas he was given the go ahead and the next five years were dedicated to writing and rewriting A Royal Night Out, which was released a few weeks ago, starring Rupert Everett and Emily Watson. The film took a further four years of planning after a series of setbacks which included losing the director and various cast members. Trevor described how working on continued on page 10

such a project is a test of tenacity. “You keep thinking you’re there, that the film is going to be made then everything collapses like a house of cards and you have to start all over again.” Trevor’s perseverance is central to his screenwriting ambitions. “Never give up,” he says. “When you start a script there are so many things that can stop you from finishing it and even once you’re happy with it, the film making process can be a long, slow slog. You have to be obsessively driven to get anywhere.” He told me that his advertising career had toughened him up and taught him never to take criticism personally. He advises any budding screenwriter to read lots of scripts; “I used to read one a day; the early drafts, not the shooting scripts, to learn what works in terms of plotting, building character and writing good dialogue.” For his research on A Royal Night Out, Trevor watched numerous 1940s romantic comedies. He also read social histories to get an understanding of the criminal underworld of post war London, delved into accounts by ‘Crawfie’, the
princesses’ nanny, for an insight into royal life and mined the BBC for anecdotal stories on those first heady days of peacetime. Trevor revealed that his transition from advertising to script writing was inevitable; “You don’t do it for any reason other than you can’t help but do it. You develop a natural inclination for a sense of story, then turn them into scripts.” He cites focus, drive, perseverance and passion as essential qualities to break into the tough but rewarding world he has chosen, “Even knockbacks teach you something,” he says. “You are always learning and you have to keep pushing.” As a writer, there is much in the collaborative process of film-making that is beyond personal control, although this joining of talents is what helps bring magic to the finished film. “The actors bring your words to life, directors impart a visual style, while the editing and music also have a huge influence on the film’s complexion.” With a possible TV project based on advertising in 80s London and a couple of adaptations in the frame, Trevor’s talent for script writing is forging the route of his own journey. The boy who loved watching films became the man who now writes them.

Local Care for You We are a group of ‘good neighbours’ working diligently to enhance the lives of those less able than themselves in Haywards Heath, Cuckfield and Lindfield. Now in its 30th year, the charity remains a 100% voluntary organisation, with services provided at no cost to clients. From picking up shopping, giving lifts to appointments, helping with odd jobs in the home or just calling in for a friendly chat, the volunteers from CARE provide a lifeline for hundreds of people in our local area.
Many are unaware of the work we do, so it may come as a surprise to learn that last year the 114 active volunteers carried out nearly 1,800 jobs! By the end of this year we will pass our 75,000 total of completed assignments. CARE is 100% dependant on volunteers and is always seeking new pairs of hands in all areas. 11th Hurst Festival From 12-26th September over 60 events will be held across Hurstpierpoint from music concerts, local author appearances, theatre, film, comedy and artists open studios, ending with a Mexican Fiesta on the final Saturday evening. The whole spirit of the Festival kicks-in with the village open day on Saturday 12th, celebrating the best of the village with clubs, societies and other village organisations taking part, and in the afternoon and evening the New Inn, in the High Street, will host an open-air show. The following day local music legend Herbie Flowers will perform with an assorted group of friends in Holy Trinity Church.
During the Festival comedian Stephen Grant will present two evenings of comedy with nationally rated comedians, as well as giving a solo show himself. Several homes will also be thrown open to music soirees, which have become a tradition. The final week sees a concert by Brighton folk band The Moulettes and a series of films, including the award winning Boyhood presented by Hurst Film Society. There are many more events planned for the Festival, keep up to date and become a Festival Friend by visiting www. hurstfestival.org. Membership gives you priority booking and a chance to win a box of wine.
60s Disco in Ditchling Following the last six years’ sellout 60s music discos in Ditchling Village Hall, we are repeating the event on Saturday 17th October featuring, as before, a top Brighton DJ and all those great bands of the 60s decade.
So ‘C’mon Everybody!’ you can dance to the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Supremes, Manfred Mann and all your favourites and help raise money for a wildlife charity at the same time. The charity which will benefit is Fauna & Flora International. Last year we raised £2800 (comprising £1400 proceeds of the disco plus match-funding from a commercial concern) to help the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas of East Africa. Only about 800 of these gentle and charismatic apes remain and our funding last year has helped their continued survival. This year’s proceeds will again help threatened primates and more details of the project we’ve selected will be available soon. Tickets cost just £13 including light refreshments. A well-stocked bar will be available, with all profits going to the charity, but you can bring your own drinks if you prefer. Tickets are available from 1st August at Ditchling Post Office and Parkers in Ditchling High Street or by phoning 01273 845361. No tickets on the door. As numbers are strictly limited, it is advisable to book your tickets early to guarantee ‘Satisfaction’ – don’t risk turning ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ by leaving it too late!

SPACE FOR YOU
need more space in your life? Let Sussex based Coom Construction design and build you an urban Retreat, perfect for office, gym, cosy den, garden room, annex or whatever you and your family desire. Have you ever dreamed of indulging in your favourite hobby in a purpose built room or working from home without the distraction of family members, ensconced in a warm, comfortable environment, bathed in natural light? If you have, yet fi nd yourself shoehorned into the spare bedroom masquerading as a cramped ‘home office’ or inadequate gym/hobby room, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. I visited Danny Coom, who, after 30 years of running his specialised carpentry and construction company, is now designing and building ‘Urban Retreats’, bespoke, top quality outdoor rooms which are affordable, sustainable and most importantly, useable throughout the year. Forget chilly garden sheds; Danny’s retreats are fully insulated to the highest level, complete with eletrics, data cabling, wi-fi and low energy downlighters, come double glazed, cedar clad and topped with a high performance fibreglass roof. The timber frame is complemented by eco friendly materials, acoustic thermal insulation and solid foundations. Sitting in the roomy 18 square meter retreat in Danny’s
garden, I could imagine the sheer potential of owning a space that could be utilized for so many purposes; beauty salon or music room, teenage studio or snooker den, the possibilities are limitless. Built to fall within

Because Danny has combined his building, designing and creative talents into the retreats, they are hand built and custom made to fit any space or purpose you require, incorporating en suite facilities, decking or wildlife friendly sedum roofs as desired. Light can pour in through bi fold doors in wood, aluminium or UPVC in any colour, or a cleverly positioned window can frame your favourite view as everything is designed in situ. Danny offers an initial free site visit during which he will discuss design and detail options for your custom hand made Urban Retreat. After your needs have been designed into your perfect building, work can commence in around a fortnight with the total build completed within approximately fi fteen days by qualified tradesmen to an agreed budget. All work is fully guaranteed and Danny’s company, Coom Construction is also a member of check-a-trade.com, where you can fi nd numerous testimonials and high scoring reviews of completed work. Installing one of Coom Construction’s Urban Retreats may either save you the expense of upsizing, provide a spacious place to work or relax or make a much needed annexe for teenager, parent or staff. Whatever your needs, there’s no doubt that the result will not only add value and space to your home but provide wellbeing and enjoyment for you and your family.

August Open Garden Malthouse Farm garden is a rural five-acre country garden with fine views of the South Downs. Established over the last ten years from scratch, it has a box parterre on the north side of the house leading to the south side with several ‘garden rooms’. There is a pretty cottage garden with roses and herbaceous plants as well as a vegetable garden and annual cutting garden. A hot garden with dahlias and salvias leads to a small orchard, beyond which is a four-acre field with mown paths, a river of summer flowers, snail mound and a wildlife pond. Other ways that people can volunteer their time include becoming a ChildLine counsellor, a Schools Service volunteer or joining a local fundraising group. There are two events coming up in Mid Sussex which you could volunteer for: On Friday 25th September there is a fabulous ‘gently used’ clothes, jewellery and bags event at King Edward Hall, Lindfield,10-12.30pm. And on Tuesday 27th October the Sussex AGM will be held, where NSPCC CEO Peter Wanless will be speaking, at The Old School, Cuckfield, 7.15pm For further details contact southlondonandsoutheast@ nspcc.org.uk and keep up to date with all the latest news and events by liking our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ nspccsoutheast

If you are interested in wildlife and enjoy working with children, then this is the perfect opportunity for you! Sussex Wildlife Trust is looking for volunteers to lend a helping hand with children visiting its outdoor education centres at Woods Mill nature reserve near Henfield, and Tilgate Park near Crawley. If you are over 16 and keen to share your enjoyment of wildlife with others then why not consider joining the team? You don’t need to be an expert, but a little knowledge is useful and enthusiasm essential. Most of your time will be spent outside helping with activities such as our ‘eye spy’ lake walk, games in the alder grove, pond dipping or bug hunting. Activities are linked to the national curriculum for children aged 4 - 11 years, and also include woodland studies and bushcraft skills. There are also opportunities to get involved as a volunteer with our very popular Nature Tots groups, children’s holiday clubs
and family events. If you would like to find out more, please come along to the introductory session at Woods Mill Nature Reserve on Thursday 24th September from 10.00am – 2.30pm. Education volunteering is subject to two satisfactory references and DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance,

The traditional wish ‘May you live in Exciting Times’, is not a happy greeting for all; for some it is a curse. None of us likes change or a situation that’s out of control, and these are definitely changing times. Especially in the computer market.
The next big change coming up is the launch of Windows 10, but what is this? It is the next operating system to be launched by Microsoft. The launch date is 29th July 2015 and there will be 7 different versions, but which one is right for you? Some of you may have noticed an icon appear in the bottom right of your screen. When you hover over it, it says ‘Get Windows 10’, but should you click it? Windows 10 is free for the first year for those of you with Window 7 SPI or 8.1 already in use. Remember, you do have a year to decide if you wish to take up this free offer, but what happens after that?
So, the question is, ‘What should you do?’ Call us! We can answer all of these questions, and provide expert professional advice on how Windows 10 will affect your system. We can even loan you a machine installed with Windows 10, when it is released, to safely test it against your system (Subject to availability). Although this incarnation of Windows is looking very promising, check before you act to see how the new operating system will affect your business critical applications. Changes have been made to the operating system that may cause certain applications to behave in an unexpected way. You may find that functions and features previously available in Windows 7 and 8 are removed.
Horse Inn in Albourne Road, Hurstpierpoint at 12 noon. Teams of two, pushing a sack trolley loaded with a firkin (72 pints) of Founder’s Best Bitter will race over a two mile course to deliver the beer to the bar at Singing Hills Golf Club in the fastest possible time. The current record is just over 32 minutes! The winning team will receive a firkin of Hurst Brewery ale to share with their club and there is a pin (36 pints) for the second placed team. For more information, to enter or sponsor a team or donate a raffle prize, please contact Nathan Twitchen on 01273 835353 or Jayne Davis on 07866438953.
Family Support If any families in the Mid Sussex area have had relatives who were part of the WWll armed forces, who sailed to war on a convoy protecting the 18th Division as part of a secret mission, planned by the British and USA governments, via Halifax/Trinidad/Cape Town/ Ahmednagar, India or those in the RAF or armed forces posted to Singapore before 1940 or any civilians imprisoned or evacuees of Singapore who were captured by the Japanese Imperial Army, then CoFEPOW (Children of Far East Prisoners of War) would like to hear from you. CoFepow is a charitable organisation, based at the National Arboretum in Alrewas, near Lichfield Staffs. Jill Robertson, CoFEPOW West Sussex Co-ordinator, holds half yearly gatherings with other keen Sussex members to assist each other in like-minded research. Jill says, “In 2012 my attention was drawn to the organisation and the little known plight of the 18th Division in WWll. My father was a Changi prisoner
of war who underwent the same experience. I immediately had a strong connection with them, as they support research and perpetuate the memory of the FEPOWs while educating young generations about the Far Eastern troubles from 19401945.” For further information, please email Jill at jillfly777@ hotmail.com, or visit www.cofepow.org.uk
Hurstpierpoint Singers The singers have been making music in Hurstpierpoint and District since 1950 and are a friendly, varied group, who enjoy singing together. Under the direction of Paul Simpson, we meet every Monday evening in the Methodist Church, Cuckfield Road, from 7.30 to 9.30pm, commencing Monday 7th September. Our Christmas concert, which is always a great success, takes place in the Village Centre with Carols, Christmas music and plenty of audience participation. We also present a spring concert of works by well know composers, this season being ‘Stainer’s Crucifion’ in Hassocks URC Church. If you enjoy singing, do come along and hopefully you will find that making music can be both satisfying and enjoyable. Contact David Redd (Secretary) on 01273 831801, email info@ hurstsingers.co.uk

If your teenager is a keen hockey player and wants to expand their skills with the best in the business, then look no further than The Hockey Academy’s courses this summer at Worth School in Sussex.
Be The Best There are summer sports camps, and then there is the East Grinstead Hockey Club Academy at Worth School. Designed and taught by some of the best in the business, the camps give hockey players from ages 11 to 18 the chance to learn from professionals at English league level, develop their skills and gain a glimpse of life as a hockey pro. Using the superb facilities in the stunning 500acre grounds of Worth School, there are three different experiences on offer. The Day Camps for 12 to 18 year olds (10th-21st August) focus on specific core skills each day, enabling talent to flourish and, for those who want to attend more than once, an opportunity to layer up experience and proficiency. Two residential courses for 13 to 17 year olds – the AJ7 Experience (24-26th August) for boys and the SB19 Experience (26-28th August) for girls are also available. Both offer amazing tuition from East Grinstead’s leading coaching team and were specifically designed to develop teenage talent by two superstars of the British game: the girls’ course by England’s Sophie Bray and the boys’ by Olympic Games and Great Britain veteran Ashley Jackson. Attendees not only train in sessions specifically designed and planned by these two athletes but also get a trip to an international match at the Olympic legacy venue at Lee Park into the bargain – as Simon Faulkner
England’s women take on Germany, and England’s men tackle Spain. Simon Faulkner, one of the Academy’s founders, is Worth’s Hockey Development Officer and a star in East Grinstead’s champion side. He says, “You couldn’t really get better pre-season training than here at this summer’s hockey academy at Worth. With coaches from East Grinstead’s Men and Women’s 1st teams, as well as high-calibre figures such as Margot Wells (sprint coach to rugby star Danny Cipriani), this is the opportunity to get exclusive access to elite trainers in a friendly environment. The difference here is that they are taught skills by people who actually use them on a professional level.” Aimed at experienced young school and club players, The Hockey Academy Day Camp costs £45 per day with a multi-day discount available. Competitively priced, the residential courses cost £285 and include accommodation, full board, expert coaching for three days, as well as transport and tickets to the Euro-Nations Cup – extraordinarily good value for such an exclusive offering. Simon adds, “We currently have some sensational players coming through at all age groups. The East Grinstead Hockey Club Academy wants to harness that talent, helping good players become great, and having massive fun along the way.”

The Finishing
Touches
Fancy a themed party? Or got your heart set on a new furniture set? Lisa de Silva puts the finishing touches to your garden. Now get out there and enjoy the sunshine!
Whether your style is romantic country cottage, Asianinspired minimalism, or formally elegant, we’ve got the low down on creating a stylish garden you can enjoy all year round.
Garden Furniture
Garden furniture design has certainly moved on from plastic tables and canvas deck chairs, so whatever your style, it is now possible to find outdoor furniture that reflects both your taste and your home furnishings. If you love sleek and contemporary design, there is now an extensive choice of weatherproof furniture to match your style requirements. Explore ranges of modular sofas, chairs and tables and add your choice of coloured cushions. This type of furniture
is made to look like natural wicker, or wood and is very low maintenance. Made of resin and aluminium, it is rust proof, UV resistant and can be left outside all year round. Teak furniture is traditional, durable and comes in a variety of styles, but does need some upkeep. If you have timber furniture positioned on decking, you might want to match up the two types of wood to create a unified look. Alternatively, if your wooden furniture has seen better days why not brighten it up with a lick of chalk paint. There’s no need to strip, sand or prime, simply breathe some new life into old furniture with a lick of paint and some new upholstery. Metal bistro furniture can also be repainted to prolong its life, or simply for a change of colour. This type of furniture is great for small spaces, or why not look for folding items that can be easily stored if you have a limited plot or balcony. Creating a chill out zone is now a straightforward affair owing to the large choice of luxurious daybeds (often canopied), steamer chairs, zero gravity loungers and rocking loungers. Or, if you like the retro look, embrace the Seventies revival with a bench swing. Pick a quiet, private spot and lounge away.
Hammocks & Hanging Chairs
For real chilled out indulgence you can’t beat a hammock or a swinging chair. Many designs are now freestanding which minimises the set continued on page 22

If you do install your hammock or swinging chair in a permanent position, just ensure it’s a spot you love and where you’ll enjoy spending time.
Upholstery
Rugs, blankets, cushions and beanbags are a cheap and easy way to add some colour and fun to the garden. Simply adding cushions to a classic garden bench makes it more comfortable and brings a splash of style. What’s more, if you choose outdoor fabrics you won’t need to bring them in every night. Oversized beanbags are not only supremely comfortable for relaxing on, but can help to make the most of a small outdoor space. Now available in tough, weatherproof material they are suitable for use outside throughout the year. Just add a waterproof-backed blanket and you can enjoy a perfect picnic al fresco. All season rugs are now also gaining popularity. With the flexibility to use in or outside, they can give your garden a fresh new look for the summer. You can even roll them up and take them to the

Ornaments & Mirrors
While your greenery may die back during the winter months, garden ornaments can add interest and style all year round. Aside from the ubiquitous garden gnomes, look for interesting sculptures and ornaments made from metal, ceramics or resin. All will add texture and colour to your plot. Spinners, sundials, wind chimes, decorative tiles, lanterns and hurricane lamps all come in a variety of styles and materials to enhance the overall look and appeal of your garden. Adding a mirror also offers visual interest and creates curiosity. Cleverly positioned, a mirror continued on page 24

Experiment with a long rectangular mirror placed horizontally along one wall or simply prop up a large mirror against a fence. Without the worry of carpet stains and marked walls, outdoor parties can often be more relaxed and fun than those indoors. Why not base your summer party on a theme this year? You might want to consider a Moroccan, tropical, luxury glamping, or Out of Africa theme and you can have lots of fun styling and accessorising the space. And even if you don’t live near the seaside a summer beach party can be hugely enjoyable. Add props such as wind breaks, deck chairs, a sand pit with buckets and spades, shells, pebbles and inflatables. Play games like beach volleyball and rounders, accompanied by your favourite summer playlist, before enjoying a ‘beach’ picnic or BBQ, all the more tasty without those sandy fingers.

GARDENING
BY FLO WHITAKER
The Mystery of the
Bulb it’s hard to stay faithful to just one favourite flower, but even fickle gardeners who have a new fancy every week always return to the trusty bulb. Ask any gardener, “What’s your favourite flower?” and swiftly comes the reply, “Whatever’s looking good now”. Gardeners’ are a contrary lot and can switch allegiance on a whim. If pressed, I’d probably say that bulbs are my favourite things. Mind you, ask me tomorrow and I’ll have thought of something else entirely. Bulbs are the inscrutable characters of the plant world; inhabiting a secret, out-of-sight underground domain. We assume they sit around lazily under the soil but nothing could be further from the truth. They have busy lives; only resting for a couple of months a year and are shining examples of quiet endeavour. After flowering, they either divide themselves up in order to reproduce or develop flowering shoots for the following season - or, quite possibly, both! The shoots remain dormant for months, waiting patiently for the perfect time to push through the soil and delight us. Bulbs have specially adapted roots that allow them to move about. If the idiot gardener plants
26
SuSSex Living August 2015
them too deep, they’ll push up through the soil. Too shallow, and they’ll drag themselves downwards. They also know which way up the world is. Planted upside down, they’ll turn around 180 degrees and will migrate to a different location if the conditions suit them better. This begs the question, “Can bulbs walk?” Yes, they can. Nature is stranger than science fiction. Spring flowering bulbs, (particularly daffodils) are only dormant during high summer, so now’s the time to dig up old and congested clumps. Overcrowding is often the reason for poor flowering performance. Carefully replant individual bulbs a few inches apart from one another, discarding any in poor condition. Spares can be planted
in other areas of the garden or given away. After flowering, bulbs often produce miniature ‘bulblets’. It takes several years before bulblets grow large enough to flower and they have a tendency to make thick clumps of foliage. This habit is particularly annoying when they’re planted in pots the flowers diminish in number and are replaced by a forest of leaves. Large patio containers are usually planted up with an assortment of bulbs so it’s well worth having a clear-out and emptying them completely every couple of years. Commonplace bulbs such as daffodil, crocus, tulip and iris are easy to tell apart. Sort them into groups, replanting the best quality ones into new compost, adding a light sprinkling of multi-purpose feed to give a boost as the roots emerge. Do this now, while the bulbs are still dormant and they’ll be raring to go when autumn arrives. If you have patience and a spare patch of soil, plant out the immature bulbs. They will eventually reach flowering size, providing colour and cut flowers for free.

Next time you’re wandering through St John’s Park enjoying the greenery, the cricket or children’s playground, spare a thought for Emily Temple, without whom there would be no park.

Emily Temple:
Burgess Hill Benefactress While Emily Temple was a resident of Burgess Hill for only 12 years, she was an early benefactress of the town and instrumental in developing the area around St John’s Common, during the middle of the 19th century. Her many building projects included the St John’s Working Man’s Institute (now Park Centre)

and her generous donations helped to fund the building of St John’s Church. However, her most lasting memorial was her donation of a ‘piece of land called Park Field’ for ‘a public Park and Recreation ground… for the benefit of the inhabitants and visitors of and to Saint John’s Common and its neighbourhood.’ We now know this as St John’s Park. Emily was originally born in London, to Robert and Mary Izant, in the Parish of St Saviour, Southwark. It was 1811, the year that George, Prince of Wales, had become Prince Regent. The second national census revealed the population of England and Wales was just over 10 million, the Napoleonic Wars were in full swing and John Nash had just started the building of Regent Street – which was to play a prominent role in Emily’s life, although nobody could have suspected it at the time. While very little is known of Emily’s early life, we know that her mother Mary came from Nuthurst, near Horsham, that her father possibly worked as

Having been widowed, Mary remarried John Cheesman in 1847. He owned property and lodging houses in Brighton, where the couple set up home. Part of the Cheesman family, owners of Cheesman & Co, North Street, Brighton, John was a highly respected china, glass and earthenware dealer. So, it is probable that Emily benefited from this connection in terms of advice, finance and even stock. St John’s House 18 95 Whatever the case, Emily’s business went from strength to strength and by 1855, she had two more premises in Regent Street, along with another in Lower Grosvenor Place. She also expanded down to Brighton and by 1862, had premises close to her in-laws at 62 East Street. It was around this time that Emily took up residence in Burgess Hill, renting a house at Fairplace. She also bought a plot of land for £400, part of which would become the public park, and during the 1860s, she plunged into a building programme around St John’s Common. Clearly, a woman of energy and vision, she did all this whilst commuting and running her London and Brighton showrooms. Burgess Hill received its fi rst gift when Emily donated £100, appealing to build a new church on St John’s Common. Let’s Eat...
Salad Niçoise with Garlic Potatoes
In the warmer weather this tasty and healthy dinner is ideal for us with our busy family life. The little ones eat early and husband Matt and the boys sometimes come home late, so this light but filling meal is perfect to enjoy all together or to dig into at any time in the evening for a fuss free supper, with no reheating – easy! SERVES 6/7
Salad
3 200g tinned tuna steak 1 packet of halloumi cheese, sliced 4 eggs, boiled Handful of black and green olives Half pack fine green beans 2 spring onions, sliced ¾ cucumber, chopped Mixed salad and rocket leaves

quickly. Put to one side. 2. Now make the garlic potatoes. Preheat the oven to 220°C/gas 7. Place your potatoes cut side down on a baking tray and drizzle with a little oil. Scatter the whole garlic cloves over the top and season with salt. Bake for 30 minutes. 3. While the potatoes are baking make your salad. Put the eggs on to boil for 4 minutes. When they are done put under cold water to cool. 4. Blanch the beans for 1-2 minutes so they retain some bite. 5. I use a large oval dish to assemble the salad, but any

shape will be fine. Make a bed of lettuce and rocket then scatter the chopped cucumber, spring onions, and olives over the top, and pile the tuna in the middle. 6. Place the halloumi, peeled and quartered eggs and beans around the edge, dress and finish with a twist of cracked black pepper.
Salad Dressing
1 clove garlic Handful fresh parsley ½ teaspoon wholegrain mustard Juice of ½ lemon 2 teaspoons sweet chilli sauce Olive oil
1. Finely chop the garlic and parsley and put them into a small jug. Add the sweet chilli sauce, lemon juice, wholegrain mustard and a generous glug of olive oil. Stir well until combined.
Carrot and Coriander Medley 5 carrots, grated Bunch of coriander, chopped 1 handful raisins 1 handful pumpkin seeds Juice of ½ lemon
1. This could not be easier! Put the grated carrots and chopped coriander in a bowl, add the raisins and pumpkin seeds and mix in the lemon juice.

Carrot Cake I have chosen carrot cake as my recipe this month as it is my daughters favourite, and it’s her birthday! You may have noticed that both my cake mix and cream cheese topping use honey. I prefer to use locally produced honey if I can as it supports local producers, is good for the local economy and reduces food miles. Also, really importantly, consuming honey from your local area has been shown to reduce the effects of hay fever, a great reason to eat this cake! Preparation 25 minutes Oven 180C fan, 200C, Gas 6 Cooking time 17 minutes or until golden brown

Cake 2 medium eggs 250g coarsely grated carrots 75g raisins Zest and juice of 1 small orange 35g honey 125ml sunflower oil 60g soft brown sugar 40g golden caster sugar 1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder 1 ½ teaspoon mixed spice 215g gluten free self-raising flour Topping 300g cream cheese 75g icing sugar 50g runny honey 20g melted butter 1. Preheat the oven. 2. Grease and line 2 x 8 inch sandwich tins.
3. In a large bowl, soak the grated carrots, raisins and orange zest in the honey and orange juice. 4. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and sugars until pale and light, add the oil and stir in the flour, baking powder and mixed spice. 5. Gradually fold the carrot mix into the batter. 6. Divide the mixture equally between the two prepared cake tins. 7. Bake in the centre of the preheated oven for about 17 minutes or until golden and risen, the cake should be springy to touch and a metal skewer inserted in the middle should come out clean. 8. Leave in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. 9. Meanwhile, make the topping. In a bowl mix all the ingredients together and place in the fridge until ready to use. 10. When the carrot cake is cold, use half the topping to sandwich the two cakes together, and the rest to decorate the top. The cake is best eaten on the day it is made.

The sunny climes of August brings us national Peach Month, and with it comes the requisite sticky chin, hands or entire face! I don’t know about you, but I’ve always thought peaches were a bit rude. It’s the shape and the smooth texture a ripe peach has, with its downy fuzz and glowing fleshy colour. They are delicious of course and if you can wait long enough for them to ripen, the intense, juicy sweetness of a ripe peach can cause grown men to dribble and lose all sense of decorum. They are also very sticky. On the other hand and before we become too lyrical, if you work for the Government you’ll know that a peach is not a fruit
at all, but the acronym for Procedure for Electronic Application for Certificates from the Horticultural Marketing Inspectorate – which is a different kind of mouthful. Peaches, of which there are now over 700 varieties including one which is flat like a hockey puck, originated in China a very long time ago. To this day it is the only place in the

In world where true, wild, uncultivated peach trees still grow. In that country, peaches are regarded as symbols of longevity and good fortune and that’s why peach blossom is carried by Chinese brides on their wedding day. They are incredibly versatile. Just think of peaches with ice cream, with cereals, added to fruit salad, sauces, crepes and cakes. Stew, poach, bake, sauté, grill, microwave or barbecue them. Or how about peach and prawn kebabs! You chop the fruit into chunks, skewer them alternately with prawns and chuck them on the ‘barbie’ – well, perhaps only in Australia. And the world’s largest peach? That’s easy. It’s the ‘Peachoid’ which stands proudly by the roadside in Gaffney, South Carolina. It holds a million gallons of water and stands some 135 ft tall. The residents of Gaffney are very proud of it which, I suppose, is a matter of taste.

Once again, The Kitchen People have wowed a very happy customer with a stunning ‘1909’ kitchen for her Sussex barn conversion, and exceptional customer service.
A Sage Choice...
e m i t every Stepping into the country home of Judy Parfitt, actress and star of Call The Midwife, you are struck by its elegance and welcoming air. Everything is ‘just so’, with antique rugs and vases dotted about effortlessly and art tastefully lining the walls. Judy herself is tall and graceful with a friendly, exacting presence. She is clearly very proud and protective of her stunning 19th century Sussex barn conversion. So, when the time came for Judy to update her dark, cramped kitchen with a new one that would perfectly suit the barn’s heritage, who better than The Kitchen People in Lindfield to do the job? “The Kitchen People were an absolute pleasure to work with from start to finish,” says Judy. “I bonded with designer Sarah Henshall right away and even during her first visit here to check out the space, I knew she had vision.” Based on the high street in Lindfield, The Kitchen People have been offering their personalised design expertise and a wide range of superior quality kitchens to many happy clients in Sussex for ten years now. Says Sarah Henshall, “We are an independent company, so are able to offer both traditional and
modern kitchen ranges from four different manufacturers, giving our customers a wealth of designs and finishes to choose from.” Catering for projects both large and small and to any budget (from £5k to £80k), The Kitchen People believe they represent exceptional value for money due to their superb customer service throughout the design and installation process. “It’s so important to correctly interpret a client’s initial brief, but it doesn’t stop there. We work closely with our customers every step of the way,” explains Sarah, “and we can even project-manage an entire installation if that’s what’s required.” Judy’s brief for The Kitchen
People was to make her kitchen brighter and maximize on the limited space available with better design and storage. After careful consideration of the building’s characteristics and history, Judy and Sarah decided upon the ‘1909’ kitchen range for the barn. Newly launched last year, the ‘1909’ range is a traditional in-frame shaker-style kitchen with painted cabinetry and a uniquely British feel. With a classic, timeless aesthetic, the beauty of the ‘1909’ design is that it can be styled in both a traditional or contemporary way, depending on the finish and details added – making it a truly versatile option. Judy’s ‘1909’ kitchen features a porcelain and sage green palette, complimenting the traditional nature of her home and the lush cottage garden to the front of the kitchen. “It’s a pleasure to cook in here now,” says Judy. “Sarah and her team have perfectly translated all my requirements into this beautiful kitchen. They’ve cleverly repositioned the storage so I can access items much more easily, which makes all the difference, especially after a long day’s filming,” Judy smiles, admiring the beautiful space around her.
“I bonded with designer Sarah Henshall right away and even during her first visit here, I knew she had vision.”

sussex beer
by sara whatley
A Sussex Craft Beer has been on the table for centuries, enjoyed by all from young to old, male and female, man and beast. But what of its’ Sussex history? Sara Whatley discovers the brewing story, and looks to the future of craft beer. Aside from a cup of tea, what could be more English than a pint of beer? This drink, which has been enjoyed for centuries, has a slightly cloudy beginning. Ale was most probably brewed and drunk in England well before the Romans arrived with their wine, and the Normans took to brewing in Abbeys

and Monastries, but who we actually have to thank for bringing this drink to our shores is unclear. However, since its arrival, brewing has been a large part of Sussex history. Once upon a time almost every village in Sussex brewed its own beer. And before this, beer was brewed
domestically in many households. This was usually undertaken by the woman of the house, nicknamed the ‘ale wife’ or the ‘brewster’. In the Middle Ages, light or weak ale, as it was known in those days, was the chosen drink of the masses, even children. Besides continued on page 40

bringing pleasure to the drinker, it also represented a safe alternative to untreated water and was full of proteins and carbohydrates, and was therefore drunk with every meal. Before the arrival of hops, early ale was drunk sweetened and flavoured with herbs and spices. The English were suspicious of this new ingredient, and protested against its use. It was not until an Act of Parliament, passed by Henry VI in 1436 granting brewers the right to brew with hops if they so chose, that this method of brewing was accepted. So Graham Holter tells us in his book, ‘Sussex Breweries’ (2001), “Aside from taste, hops had two other benefits. First, they acted as an excellent preservative, better than had been the case with the other flavourings. Second, they were happy in the Sussex climate.” (p. 6) This meant the potential was there for beer production in Sussex, although it took a few years more for the hops to become established enough to be relied upon for brewing. At this time in the 15th century, unhopped beer was known as ale, and with the flavouring of hops it was known as beer. Once hops were grown readily in our Sussex soil, most farmers of that time would have been producing this

crop. And with all their thirsty workers, they would also have been brewing, and drinking a lot of the ale themselves. It was not uncommon for a farm hand to drink 8 or 9 pints a day, starting from 7am with their breakfast! Although hops grew well in Sussex, and indeed “At one time Sussex was Britain’s principal hop-growing county” (Holter, 2001, p. 11), Kent went

on to take the crowning title with its more desirable geological conditions. Now number two, Sussex continued to grow hops and was well renowned for the condition and flavour of their crop. The most popular English hop varieties were Goldings and Fuggles. Oast houses, introduced in the mid 1500s for drying hops, can still be seen all over Sussex and Kent today. The majority of them have now been converted into domestic dwellings, and continued on page 42

I must say I have a particular penchant for residing in one of these cosy, embracing buildings myself. From small scale and domestic brewing – where sometimes the ale would be sold on the premises, thus
creating the first ale houses, inns and taverns – brewing started to become more organized, and the first commercial brewing companies established themselves by the 16th century. As industry and empire boomed, so
did brewing. Large commercial brewers gained success with the additions of porters and dark beers, especially in London, and later along came the Indian Pale Ale and eventually lager. Industry and engineering changed the pouring method from hand held jug,
Real Ale Brewing Method Stage 1 Hot water is added to the malted (oven dried) grain and left to sit in the mash tun for 60-90 minutes. The liquid is run off, and the grain left behind. The liquid is a sugary, sticky syrup containing a lot of the sugar from the grain. This sugar is what the yeast is going to eat. The grain also gives the beer its malty flavour and warm, caramel deeper notes. Stage 2 The sugary liquid is transfered from the mash tun to the copper, where it is boiled with hops. The sweet liquid mixes with the bitter taste of the hops in as balanced a way as possible, and the boiling also finishes the enzymatic reactions that started during the mash. Stage 3 The beer is cooled down to about 20 degrees in order to add the yeast. One way to cool the beer is with a plate heat exchanger: metal plates are stacked together with two paths running through them. The hot liquid runs through side-to-side one way and cold water runs through side-to-side the other way,
so the liquids run next to each other through the metal plates. Because there is a large surface area they exchange their heat, and at the end the water comes out heated and the beer comes out cooled. Stage 4 The cooled beer is put into a vessel, and the yeast added. Now it is left to ferment. Yeast likes constant temperatures, so a temperature controlled atmosphere is important. During fermentation the yeast consumes all the sugars and turns them into alcohol, hence the beer becomes alcoholic. The longer you leave the fermentation process, and the more sugars the yeast consumes, the more refined the beer becomes. This is the first ferment. The beer is now ready for the second ferment. It is transferred into casks, or bottles, where it will continue to ferment. Some brewers add a little more sugar to help boost the fermentation at this stage. Depending on the beer, fermentation can be as quick as ten days for the first ferment and ten days
for the second, but it can also be as long as three weeks for each ferment, or sometimes even longer. To gauge when fermentation is completed, the level of sugar in the beer is measured. The sugar content will decrease as the yeast turns it into alcohol. Stage 5 After the two fermenting phases the beer is ready to drink. It can also now be stored. The darker the beer and the higher the alcohol content the more it will benefit from being stored, like wine, but for just a year or two. If it is a natural live beer, with yeast in it, it will continue to improve as well.
42

What About the Fizz? One of the by-products of yeast is carbon dioxide. Once the beer is in a sealed vessel – cask or bottle – the carbon dioxide can’t go anywhere so builds up and dissolves into the liquid. When the beer is later opened the carbon dioxide wants to escape, so it bubbles out of the beer. Alternatively, the beer can be left to ferment in large closed vessels or tanks and the pressure builds up inside them. Specialist machinery is then needed to fill from the pressurized tank into a bottle or can without losing all the pressure, and ultimately bubbles.

run back and forth from the cellar, to the beer pump we know and love today. From the 20th century to present, megabreweries reigned King. This was welcome for many, and landlords could finally depend on regular, consistent beers. To ensure the presence of Real Ale remained, as well as the more commercial brews, organizations were set up and various campaigns meant that it was still possible to get a pint of the real stuff in most pubs. And this is what Sussex is still most famous for; Real Ale, which is brewed with live yeast, and so continues to ferment in the barrels and has a natural carbonation. As all things come round full circle, there is a current resurgence of small scale brewing, or microbrewing. This is brewing done by hand, not machine, and so it becomes more of an art – adding a little more of this and that ingredient as the brewer feels necessary to create the bespoke taste of each individual brew. Yet with the art there still comes the science – the exacting moments when the brewing process needs to be just so, and so it is a balance and an interesting combination between the two. For today’s brewers, this is an exciting period of rediscovery of ancient

brewing arts and flavours, as well as a bold step into new flavours and styles. Craft brewers are interested in the other flavours in the hops, as well as the classic bitterness, such as citrus, pine, lemon and resin. To achieve these fresh flavours, brewers are putting a lot more hops into their beer, and of different varieties as well. All over Sussex you will find microbreweries, with more emerging every year. And in support of this, many pubs and off licences are welcoming in these craft beers, allowing you to taste the goods on tap or in bottles yourself. Some brewing companies are even taking the step to open their own bars and pubs, championing the hand crafted experience even further. Unsurprisingly, all of this is well received by the seasoned ale drinker, and the new ale sipper alike. Real Ale is where it is at, and I say cheers to that.

HISTORY
BY JOAN ROBERTS
Hooked on
The historic High Street of East Grinstead has long attracted many visitors with its original timber framed buildings, buildings which the East Grinstead Society are passionate about preserving. The East Grinstead Society began as a result of a wave of protest following the demolition in 1967 of one of the 15th Century buildings in the High Street, effectively ruining what had been a continuous line of medieval structures, which were thought to be one of the longest in the country. The protestors formed a Society, which has as one of its aims –“to protect the ancient buildings of East Grinstead and to maintain the quality of its heritage.” East Grinstead has an unusually wide High Street, with an ‘island’ of buildings in the centre, known as ‘Middle Row’. These were originally temporary market stalls, which later became permanent structures. The
High Street itself was planned to provide space for markets and fairs and in 1247, Henry III granted the town a charter for a weekly market and an annual Fair in July. Some of the 14th and 15th Century houses which survive in the Conservation Area, have long strips of land behind them known as ‘Portlands’, which were needed to keep animals and to grow fruit and vegetables for the household. These properties were known as burgages and their owners as burgesses. They played an important part in the town and enjoyed certain trading privileges. In 2001, the Society commissioned a Dendrochronolgy (tree ring dating)

project to confi rm the age of some of the houses in the High Street. Samples were taken from the timber-framed buildings and subjected to analysis to discover the date the timber was felled and the construction date of the original building. One of the earliest buildings is that now occupied by ‘Broadleys’ the outfitters, which was dated to approximately 1355. On the paved area opposite this shop, is the probable site of the burning of three Protestant martyrs, Thomas Dungate, Ann Tree and John Foreman, in 1556, on July 18th – a market day to ensure the maximum publicity for the event, as the town would be full of people. The Town War memorial, for which the Society recently obtained listed status, is in the centre of the Conservation Area, which the Society seeks to protect. It was designed by the sculptor, Ernest G. Gillick, who was responsible for some of the statuary on the front of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The listing recognises its significance in the Conservation Area and underlines its importance to the town. The Society organises guided walks round the town and has also produced Town Trails – details are on our website www.eastgrinsteadsociety. org. You will also fi nd details of our monthly meetings and our work in maintaining the quality of our Heritage by monitoring planning applications at local and strategic levels. Our Society is passionate about the beautiful and historically important buildings of East Grinstead, and are proud to preserve our town for future generations to enjoy. www.sussexliving.com

Wakehurst Place to
Balcombe Walk There are many lovely views to enjoy on this linear walk through the countryside between Wakehurst and Balcombe. Just remember to pack your stamina for the hills!
This 3.5 mile walk starts from Wakehurst Place to the north of Ardingly and finishes in the village of Balcombe. It has been designed in mind for those with bus passes as it is a linear walk. Despite being relatively short, it is quite hilly in places and this more than compensates for the comparatively short distance! It uses mainly established tracks, woodland and field headland paths, and the route is generally well signposted. Alight from the bus stop at the entrance to Wakehurst Place, and walk northwards alongside the road on a wide grass verge for approximately 100 yards. Turn left on a surfaced track at gate 3. Wakehurst Place
is the country estate of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and is leased from the National Trust. It is famed for it’s botanic gardens and tree collections and the Millennium Seed Bank.

building on your right is the Millennium Seed Bank.
Where the path bears right towards buildings, carry on ahead downhill on a wide grassy track. Go through a gate and into woodland, bearing right to follow the signed path. Please note that this path
is the only official public right of way through these woodlands, all others are only for visitors to Wakehurst Place who have paid an entrance fee!
At a wide crossing track, carry on ahead, and go through a large metal kissing gate before descending to a board walk across a wet area. Follow the meandering path ahead to cross a plank bridge then go steeply uphill on a stepped path helpfully provided with a handrail! At the top of the steps, follow the path ahead which bears right, leading to a gate into a field. Turn left to walk alongside the wood, then right uphill on an obvious headland path. At the top of the field go over a stile and into Paddockhurst Lane. Turn right for a few yards, then left on a track signed to Forest Farm. Where the track bears right, carry on ahead through a metal gate, and follow the signed path downhill on a left hand field edge. At the bottom of the field, with the buildings of Woodward’s Farm to your right, bear left and cross continued on page 48

Do you want to restore and revive
your energy? Chris Dresser discovers a remarkable use of the three most vital elements in our lives – water, air and light. I’m not particularly paranoid about my health. Some people look for any and every treatment, simply because it’s brand new or purported as the elixir of life. However if I hear of something that appeals to my sense of logic, I do take a look at it. Which is how I recently came to be in the consulting rooms of Dr Simi Khanna in the historical Sussex town of East Grinstead, where I discovered an intriguing touch of India. Dr Simi is a Medical Practitioner with over 30 years of experience in both Britain and India. After a personal health crisis she developed a combination of long forgotten ancient therapies, greatly enhanced by the miracles of modern technology. (Cellular Medicine) What made sense to me was that the human cells are the basic building blocks of the body. It follows therefore that if the cells are healthy the body has the ability to heal itself
from most ailments. However the health of the cells depends upon nature’s own ingredients, namely air, water, light, as well as nutrients and vibrations, all natively present in the cell. Dr Simi provides personalised therapies with a combination of all these elements to suit individual health needs.
Since completing a course of treatments my aches have melted away, I have far more energy, a good feeling of wellness We started with a detailed consultation. I was linked to a computer program that analyses every aspect of what was happening in my body. Then, I lay down on a couch. Dr Simi handed me a plastic piping, called a cannula with two small nozzles at one end that rests just inside the nostrils. The pipe was
attached to a machine, delivering a gentle flow of oxygen, activated by Light rays filtered through special water providing the three major ingredients for the cells. This sparks the energy producing factory of our cells and restores the self-healing ability of the body, so often missing in our polluted world. I relaxed to a fascinating fusion of western and eastern music for half an hour. It was a very pleasant experience. Then Dr Simi took a glass of water from the machine and gave it to me to drink. I was then treated by a Light laser machine (painless) - that was aimed at my knees, which had weakened over many years of playing sport. The verdict? Since completing a course of treatments my aches have melted away, I have far more energy, a good feeling of wellness and a stronger pair of knees. This therapy proved to me that there are huge benefits to be had from re-energizing our body’s cells.

Stronger together
For the past 125 years, local charity, Family Support Work, has assisted vulnerable families across Sussex, helping them to build both strong family structures and brighter futures. Since its conception, Family Support Work has maintained its relevance by constantly adapting to changing social needs. “Our main aim is to help create a strong family for every child in Sussex,” explains Martin Auton Lloyd, Acting Director of the charity, which in full is called the Chichester Diocesan Association for Family Support Work. “Over the years, as family life has changed, we have constantly reviewed the best way to support the vulnerable to get back on their feet and create a better future for themselves and their families.” The charity is currently based at Knowles Tooth, Hurstpierpoint, which in the past has provided respite holiday accommodation for those in need. However, times have changed. “What we’ve found is that families want to feel part of society by enjoying a normal family holiday and not one at a specialist centre, as this just increases their alienation. So, we’ve got two caravans on large parks that these families can go to. We give them vouchers so they can enjoy the activities, just like everyone else and this helps to stop them feeling segregated,” says Martin. Owing to this shift, the painful decision has been taken to sell Knowles Tooth for residential development, as FSW feel the money would be better spent helping families within the community. This means they can increase the amount of free and confidential support they offer to parents, or carers of children across Sussex. Many families are living with challenging and complex issues, including debt, abuse, addiction
54
S u ss e x L i v i n g August 2015
and mental health problems. This often causes the families and their children to withdraw from the community, leaving them isolated and depressed. One advantage of FSW is that it is independent and free from government funding structures and targets. This means support workers are under no pressure to achieve fast resolutions and can achieve a deep level of trust and confidence with families, which makes it easier to give them the help that they need. Support is delivered through activities, such as after school clubs, home visits, supported breaks, regular food box deliveries and family days out. As a charity, FSW has received donations and grants in the past, specifically to support a project helping with rural isolation, where lack of transport and opportunities to socialise, can lead to practical and emotional hardship. However, for the future of FSW, there is also an ongoing fundraising programme through church activities and donations. “While the way we offer support has changed over the years, helping to resolve family issues and relieve deprivation will always remain at the heart of our mission,” smiles Martin.
“Our main aim is to help create a strong family for every child in Sussex”

90s hair is making a comeback! But don’t worry, we won’t all be walking around with ‘The Rachel’ again, this time make the look truly yours. Hair trends, like fashion, move in cycles: what was created in one era is recreated decades later. Now it seems that the most iconic hairstyles of the 90s are making a return (with a modern twist, of course). Scrunchies, high ponytails, layers and bob crops are all pointing towards a 90s hair revival. Scrunchies, a truly 90s phenomenon, have reemerged in style, but with a contemporary take on their appearance and how to wear them. Crochet-knit, satin, metallic, flower patterned, colour-blocked and sequinned scrunchies have taken the place of the black and purple velvet ones of the 90s. This retro accessory now decorates messy buns and is featured in up-dos, such as skyhigh fishtail braided ponytails and half-uphalf-down hairstyles.
High ponytails that once would have been slicked back are now more refined. To get the current remake of this 90s trend, make sure lots of volume and texture are added and you are good to go! Exaggerated, feathery side partings with crazy layers and lots of body have replaced the 90s middle parted look that had blowdried straight locks and little volume. The sharp 90s bob crop has now been updated with soft waves and blunt ends for a more feminine, casual look. There’s also a hint of 90s Grunge in the air as experimentations with bold colours are popular: a look that will surely be a favourite of festivalgoers, as it adds a hint of rebellion to any look. Viva la 90s! www.sussexliving.com

No matter what your look, a pop of colourful lipstick will lift you and your outfit. Get in the swing of a bright and bold lip this Summer, and you will never look back.
Kiss Me,Quick! Summer is now in full swing and with temperatures rising and the sun shining, it’s time to celebrate with these bright and bold lip colours, guaranteed to ensure your lips are ready for some holiday fun! Bold red lipstick is a must for any season, but especially for the dazzling days of this summer. Finding the right shade of red is important as there are so many to choose from, but to keep in line with the demands of the season, choose a bright ruby red, wine red or coral red shade. Give traditional red lipstick a fresh update by adding a hint of hot pink to it for a really beachy look. As darker colours can be problematic in terms of their longevity, add lip stain for lasting colour and a carefree day. To get the perfect evening ensemble, add a touch of lip gloss on top of your lipstick. Be pretty in pink! Understated pinks are a good choice for a more subtle, everyday look. Choose any lippy on the soft pink scale for natural, rosy lips. Carnation pink will give a delicate hue of colour to your lips; try using a sheer, shimmery light pink for a touch of sparkle. Also, don’t worry about getting it perfect; smudged and diffused lips are more than acceptable this summer! Summer is the perfect time for fruity colours: try a deep berry hue or dark plum colour for
night-time wear and an orange or raspberry-red tinted lip gloss for daytime shimmer. Orange is a hard shade to pull off, but choosing a fiery orange-red lipstick gives lips a gorgeous pop and it suits pretty much every skin tone. Keep an eye out for a natural lipstick containing real fruit pigments, which are full of antioxidants and vitamins and will leave your skin healthy and glowing. Using lipstick can be a tricky business, but follow these easy steps to try out different summer lip trends: n Apply your lipstick with a brush and then blot with a tissue for a matte finish. n Dab on the lipstick and then smudge it with your fingers for a diffused, ‘just kissed’ effect. n Mix your lipstick with a clear gloss on the back of your hand, before putting it on your lips for a high-shine lip look. n Use lip pencil to define your lip line, and then layer on the lipstick for a bold and fully saturated appearance. n Apply lipstick all over your lips before blending with a cotton bud. Then add a slightly different shade of lippy to the centre of your lips for an extra burst of colour. n Put your lip pencil on in layers, blurring it at the edges of your lips for a smudgy look and intensify the centre of your bottom lip for a sensual effect.
Don’t worry about getting it perfect; smudged and diffused lips are more than acceptable this summer!

in the winter of 1642 a bloody battle was fought on Muster green in Haywards Heath, which today stands as a little moment of respite in the middle of a bustling town. Muster Green is an attractive, open green space in the centre of Haywards Heath. Triangular in shape and outlined with mature trees, it is bordered on one long side by the main road into the town and in the Spring its manicured grass is complemented by thousands of purple crocuses, maintained by Haywards Heath Town Hall, who also own the site. However, at the very start of the English Civil War in 1642, this gentle, calm oasis in the middle of a bustling, Plaque suggested and wording written busy town was the setting for by Philip Pavey. a brisk battle between Royalists and Parliamentarians. course, Haywards Heath was no more than a village like any other in rural Sussex and Muster Green was open heathland, so why was there fighting there at all? The county of Sussex was strategically important to both sides in the confl ict that set Englishmen against Englishmen. This was because of the ironworks and cannon foundries in the north weald and because our shoreline was the shortest route to France - potentially the source of smuggled bullion and arms. It was vital for the Parliamentarians to prevent the continued on page 64

Royalists from taking control, but at the beginning of the war, it was impossible to say who might have the upper hand. Surprisingly, in Sussex there was no clear distinction, by social class or location that defined who would support the Crown and who the Parliament. Family raged against family, cousin against cousin. In Chichester for example, the gentry and the church supported the King while the merchant classes stood out for Parliament. Curiously, this

meant that in the early days of the war the two opposing factions virtually shared the facilities as it were, politely training, drilling and practising arms within a stone’s throw of each other. The county was truly split. Sir Robert Ford who led the royalist force at the battle of Muster Green was the brother in law of one of Cromwell’s most successful generals. Amongst the great Sussex families, the Pelhams, the Burrells and the Shelleys were for Parliament while the Gorings, the Coverts and the Culpepers were loyal to the Crown. Their views were sincerely held and for some of the major participants at least, there seemed to be little rancour. There are letters between the staunch Royalist Sir William Campion, of Danny in Hurstpierpoint, to his great friend the leader of Parliament in Sussex, Colonel Morley of Glynde, in which they exchange fond wishes for the preservation of each other’s families. Yet there were zealots amongst the ranks of the parliamentarians for whom the war was as much about the destruction of all that they considered frivolous in what they viewed as a corrupt and selfserving Church. In a chilling parallel with some modern war today, when Chichester Cathedral was invaded by the parliamentary forces under Sir Arthur Hazelrigg, he is said to have danced and capered amid the wreckage his men had made of the intricately carved screens and expressed his delight at the destruction of the great organ pipes saying, “What noise they make now.” But what of Muster Green? In November 1642, the first year of what would be almost nine years of

conflict, Sir Robert Ford, the High Sheriff who had taken control of Chichester for the Crown, decided to lead his forces through Sussex to capture Lewes for the King. Why he chose to approach Lewes via Cuckfield and Haywards Heath is unclear, but as he threatened the local population and bullied them into joining his little army as they went along, perhaps he needed to make a broad sweep of the territory rather than proceeding directly. In the first week of December they left Cuckfield and encountered their first opposition in the shape of a much smaller but more disciplined Parliamentary force waiting for them at Muster Green. There being no cannon, a very sharp, hand to hand engagement followed. The fight lasted for about an hour, during which the Royalists suffered some two hundred casualties and the forcibly recruited rural folk, not surprisingly took to their heels, fleeing through Ditchling and Hurstpierpoint. Driven from the field, Sir Robert, his officers and what remained of the original force retired onto the Downs in disorder and trudged all the way back to Chichester. So ended the battle of Muster Green.
Sussex was strategically important to both sides in the conflict that set Englishmen against Englishmen.

My view from the Downs this month is largely one of great relief that I no longer commute. I did it for years and even made some pocket money writing about my weekly experiences. I never had to invent anything because either my fellow passengers or the rail company would always provide some remarkable incident, usually incomprehensible and often hilarious, but nonetheless the daily grind was not much fun, so I was delighted when it came to an end. And I was reminded of it when foolishly I thought to travel up to London for a day out from my Sussex backwater last week. It would seem that I hadn’t been paying attention to the railway companies’ creative approach to fare increases. My fi rst mistake was to travel at an earlier time than is apparently regarded as appropriate for non-working people. In consequence, when I presented myself at the ticket

office, a railway employee asked me, with a perfectly straight face, for a sum of money which would have bought a decent lunch with wine for two people, or a pair of shoes, or ten concession cinema tickets. I explained that I only needed a day ticket, not as I assumed he meant, a weekly season ticket in the fi rst class section of the train. We had a good laugh at this - or at least I did. He was unmoved. I would have gone on to develop this theme, but a restive crowd was building up behind me, so instead I caught a much later train. Coming home I played the ‘guess the platform’ game with a great mass of regular commuters, before surging onto the train, failing to secure a seat and enjoying a long stand, with my nose crammed into the ear of someone to whom I had not been introduced. Think I’ll stay in Sussex for a little while.

Dear Sussex Living…
… I would like to thank you for the lovely article you printed in May’s edition for East Grinstead in Bloom. It allowed us to tell people further afield about the things we do around the town and as a result we have had enquires from local people wanting to volunteer and help on the projects we are involved with, which is wonderful for us and the residents of East Grinstead. Thank you for the wonderful community work you cover for the area. Keep up the great work. Many thanks, Samantha Baldery, Secretary of East Grinstead in Bloom …John Rose, our Chairman, asked me to say a big thank you for including the article about Age Concern Hassocks in your magazine. We have had some very good feedback and lots of people have seen it. We are confident that it will encourage more elderly residents to use the excellent facilities we offer. Thank you for your ongoing support. It is very important to us. Kind regards, Jill Marsh, Age Concern Hassocks

…I would like to thank you for including the Vivace Concert in Horsham in your Diary Dates. It was a very successful evening and raised £928, split between our Stroke Group and Horsham Parkinson’s branch. Best wishes, Carolyn Dodd and Sandy Varley, Volunteer Leaders …Just wanted to say how pleased I am with the placement of our full page advertisement in the May issue for our Dash of Colour. A work of genius to place our advert next to the “A big Ol’ Knees Up” editorial as the soldiers at the bottom of the page turn into our runners! Regards, Rachel Chitty, Blind Veterans …We would like to thank you for the article and publicity you recently gave Burgess Hill Choral Society for our Spring concert. It was a huge success and we had a packed and appreciative audience. We really appreciate the support that Sussex Living magazine gave us in letting the local community know about the event, and also for your ongoing support over the last few years. Kind regards, Frances Eales on behalf of BHCS

Enjoy a
greener summer From picnics in the park to lazy days on the beach and barbecues in the garden.
S
ummer in West Sussex spells lots of lovely days out as we enjoy all that the county has to offer. But while we might be in holiday mode, it’s important that we don’t take a break from recycling and make sure we’re doing our bit to help avoid creating a small mountain of rubbish by recycling as much of our summer waste as we can. Long summer evenings are perfect for spending with family and friends, enjoying leisurely barbecues and picnics. You can make recycling easy by placing a container next to the barbecue for people to pop their empty drinks cans and bottles into – and it’ll save you time on the post-party tidy up! Plastic burger, sausage trays and coleslaw tubs can also be recycled now, as can your empty ketchup bottles. What about those little plastic pots containing ready-made dips and fruit punnets, foil covering the homemade dishes or even the clean foil container from your quiche? They can be recycled too. And don’t forget those aerosols. Used and empty bug repellent, anti-perspirant and antiseptic spray – your kerbside collection can take more than you think. Plastic bottles from 40 years ago have been discovered in landfill sites and, unfortunately, they still look good for their age.
for West Sussex
Why is it so important to think about recycling? Well, it can take decades for plastic to decompose. Plastic bottles from 40 years ago have been discovered in landfill sites and, unfortunately, they still look good for their age. Earlier this year a washing-up bottle from the 1970s was dug out of a closed landfill site near Steyning and it looked almost as good as new – if a little grubby. Recycling plastics means they can be turned into other items such as toys, football shirts, picnic benches – or other bottles or containers. It can take as little as six weeks to turn your old plastic bottle into a new one! More than 1,250 tonnes of plastic bottles and containers have been processed at the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Ford during the three month period from March until the end of May. It’s an increase of around 200 tonnes compared to the same period last year, when 1,037 tonnes of plastic material was processed at the plant, which is run by Viridor. www.recycleforwestsussex.org
So every item you recycle really does count. Of course, it’s not all about plastics – here in West Sussex, glass bottle and jars, cartons, metal cans and aerosols, foil, paper and card can also be recycled at home provided they are clean, dry and loose – not tied up in plastic bags. This is really important. If food and liquid leftovers get into your recycling bin it can ruin the rest of your recycling – and it may harm the process at the recycling facility in Ford as it can www.recycleforwestsussex.org
cause items to stick together or even clog the machinery. If you are eating al fresco, whether you’re camping, picnicking or barbecuing, why not choose to reuse? It’s far better to put food into re-usable containers rather than wrapping it in plastic film or foil. You could also consider using reusable plates and cutlery instead of buying disposable products that can’t be recycled. And don’t forget to dispose of your picnic waste responsibly by taking it home with you. Visit www.recycleforwestsussex.org for a full list of things that can be recycled in West Sussex, you can also find out what happens to your recycling once it has been collected from your kerbside. Enjoy the holidays and be a sun-sational summer recycler. for West Sussex

Brand Power! d lishe b a e t l leng n es a o h c g e n a hug Ta k i s i come e s b e i u o n y a o comp . How d s s e n i s bu new for new u bra nd a o y o d w o nd h k now n? A mple busi ness? Damia n Se reveals some big brand secrets that w il l work for yo u.
Branding is more than logos
Your brand goes deeper than a logo. Branding is a set of associations held in mind by a potential customer. The culmination of lots of factors - design, advertising, displays, marketing and how you treat customers - will generate associations. Studies suggest that as much as 75% of purchase decisions are based on emotion. Branding can make your business perform better by harnessing these associations and emotions that’s brand power!
Secret No 2: Allocate a consistent percentage of your budget and don’t spend haphazardly.
Secret No 4: Think of one unique aspect of your business and push that to the fore.
Have a plan!
Don’t rush it
You need a fully-budgeted plan, outlining the costs of how you are going to achieve your marketing goals within a certain timeframe. Using a marketing agency can be beneficial as they’ll help you understand the full range of marketing opportunities for your business as well as ways you can gain an advantage over competitors.
Secret No 1: Be clear about what your business stands for. Formulate a concise message with resonance, and project this across your marketing.
Secret No 3: Think in reverse: consider the point of sale before the product or service.
Head out of the sand
Brand, not bland
Products and services don’t sell themselves. You may have to spend as much as 20% of turnover during the early brand-building years. Ignoring marketing until it’s too late leads to panic spending. There’s nothing like a badly-managed SEO campaign for wasting money! Be consistent, and work towards a set of goals.
78
S u ss e x L i v i n g August 2015
It seems logical to emulate competitors - they’re doing OK, so why shouldn’t you? Most markets are saturated or close to, so the message you’ll give is that you’re a “me too” business, i.e. there’s no reason to choose you over competitors. Me too businesses can survive by competing on price… but that’s a race to the bottom.
A great phrase, used everywhere can be hugely successful. But once you have a reputation for, say, value, it’s hard to switch to another, like quality. A change can affect your reputation and future sales as well as being costly to integrate across your marketing. Secret No 5: Every big brand uses focus groups. Speak to potential customers before you commit to a message.
Quick branding tips
Get a great logo. Place it everywhere. Don’t weaken the logo by adding or altering – less is more. Write a brand value statement and pin it to the wall in a prominent place. Integrate your brand within every aspect of your business. Create brand standards and consistent marketing materials. Not only does this reinforce your brand, it’s more efficient.
