Christmas is the time of year where you can really enjoy showcasing your style. Whether you prefer a traditional, vintage or contemporary look, grab a glass of mulled wine and enjoy our guide to decking your halls for the festive fun ahead
Most of us will want our Christmas decor to reflect the style and palette already in our homes. So, if you enjoy a pared down, weathered wood, neutral Scandi style, you probably want to extend that to your Christmas decorations. Or, maybe you prefer a more traditional red and green palette. Whatever you decide, it’s a good idea to take your chosen colour scheme and use it to accent your home. So, for example, if you decide the predominant colour for your decorations will be red, invest in some cushions, throws and accessories, such as scented candles, to add texture, fragrance and set the scene. Once you’ve got the backdrop sorted, the fun can really begin.

The type and style of tree you choose will often be dictated by space. Think about positioning to help you decide on height, width and whether a real, or artificial tree would work best. If you don’t have much available floor space, placing a tree on a side table is very effective, as it also makes the tree appear larger. Do check real trees have a good shape before buying. Remember, while you can prune to perfection, you can’t add branches if it’s lop-sided. If you are worried about sustainability, get a tree with roots that you can plant out at a later date, and reuse in years to come. This also gives you the option to decorate the tree in the garden, bringing Christmas inside and out. Artificial trees now come in all shapes, sizes, colours, textures and some are even pre-lit. Thankfully, the quality has improved dramatically over the years as well! There will be no mess or maintenance, you can choose a size which is perfect for your location, and there is only one initial investment. If you are short on space, think small! Take a simple row of three miniature fi r trees in small baskets or galvanized metal pots and decorate with mini baubles. Placed along continued on page 8

a mantelpiece or windowsill, this can be just as effective a statement as a large tree. Alternatively, raid your local woodland for large twigs and create a twig-tree in a large vase. Leave natural, or spray with gold or silver, string with lights and decorate with baubles. Maximum impact for minimum spend!
Follow the Christmas star
Fairy lights can really make your home and garden sparkle with Christmas magic. For your tree, more is more in this case! Light from the top down, wrapping round in spiral sections. Use as many sets as it takes, and don’t forget the bottom branches. Festoon lighting looks fabulous outside, illuminating your garden with festive cheer. String around your doorway, or along a fence, hedge or wall in the front of your house to welcome your Christmas guests. You can also use lights to decorate mirrors or windows, thread through garlands, light up an unused fireplace or coil in an empty vase for a glittering table centrepiece. For a spectacular wall of light, hang them in strands, either outside or in, to create a stunning focal point.

Decorations small‌
When decorating the tree you may want to make a style statement by using baubles of only one or two colours. Whatever the case, hang dominant baubles first and intersperse with smaller ones to get the right balance. Leftover baubles look fantastic piled into glass vases, lanterns or bowls, clustered together for maximum effect.

Another option is to hang a bunch of baubles on ribbons and tie onto doors, or hang in windows in place of a wreath. A few oversized baubles can also look stylish grouped by the fireplace, in an entrance hall or landing.

Garlands can be draped across a mantelpiece, wound around stairwells or tacked above doors. Whatever you do with yours, remember they offer infinite possibilities in terms of decoration. Pep your garland up even more with lights, pine cones, baubles, feathers, fruits, holly – in fact anything that takes your fancy. Home made or shop bought, wreaths create a warm welcome at the front door. They can be as elaborate or simple as you like and look cheerful no matter what. To ring the changes, you could hang three small wreaths on a ribbon, or create a cluster of smaller wreaths on the front door. Alternatively, why not hang matching wreaths in windows, to enjoy inside and out?

What to do with all the Christmas cards? If you don’t have space to display them all, this is a tricky one. You could cover a pin board in cards, creating a giant advent calendar pastiche, or staple them

A Wonderland of Accessories
Candles, winter blooms and greenery can all add to the Christmas display. Scented candles are particularly evocative at this time of year, especially if you use the same scent year on year; all those magical memories will come flooding back with your aroma of Christmas. You could also wrap presents (real or display) in your chosen colour palate, adorned with ribbons, wrapped chocolates, tree trimmings or candy canes to create a present sculpture either under the tree, or in an entrance hall. Traditional nativity scenes can also create a focal point. Or, why not create a contemporary scene with various sized angels, or reindeer, clustered together.

There is also a nostalgic trend for giant paper decorations, like honeycomb bells, snowflakes and tissue balls, which are available in every shade and hue. These are a fast way to add festive drama and can be suspended from the ceiling. Again, they look particularly stylish in groups, or ‘flurries’!
Eat and be Merry
You can have lots of fun at Christmas dressing the table for dinner. Use baubles, frosted pine cones, hollyTuileries sprigs, groups of candlesticks, or a traditional flower and foliage centrepiece. Think about a festive table runner to add central focus to your table, and make your serviettes sparkle by tying a glittery bow of material around them. The next courses for back into work are: Work and Money - your new start in 2015 The Working Futures Partnership, together with Mid Sussex District Council, is offering two free courses in the New Year in Burgess Hill, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Hurstpierpoint. Dawn Grant, MD of Working Futures explains: “We run two separate courses. Moving on into Work helps people build their confidence, identify their skills and create a great CV as well as offering help with applications and interviews. We also look at volunteering and work experience and how that can lead into paid employment.” The course consists of five two-hour workshops and is ideal if you’re looking to return to work or if you’re in work and wanting to change direction. Making the Most of your Money This two-hour workshop offers advice on budgeting, making your money go further and understanding benefit changes. Care in the Air A three-day Christmas festival is to be held in Cuckfield next month (December 12th - 14th), in aid of life-saving charity Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance. The event is to be held at Holy Trinity Church on December 12th from 11.30am to 7.30pm, December 13th from 11.30am to 6.30pm and on December 14thfrom 11.30am to 5pm, followed by carol services. As well as magnificently decorated trees and baubles featuring the faces of some of the air ambulance’s former patients, there will also be refreshments and live music. Admission is £4 but free for children. Supporters of the air ambulance can also buy lottery gift vouchers or tickets for the charity’s Christmas Draw on December 19th. Morris and Mummers at the Bull This year marks the 29th year that Ditchling Morris and Mummers will perform a traditional Mummers play at Christmas. They will appear on Sunday 22nd December in the Lewes Precinct at approximately 11.00am and 12.00 midday. On Boxing Day, 26th December, they will perform at 1.00pm at the Bull Hotel in Ditchling by kind permission of the Landlord. This is the BIG ONE! There will be the customary carols for all before the Mummers Play, followed by Morris Dancing. Burgess Hill Choral Society Christmas Concert At this year’s Christmas Concert, the choir will be singing two well-loved pieces by Gabriel Fauré, his beautiful Requiem and the slight but exquisite Cantique de Jean Racine. The concert also features the Christmas Oratorio by Camille SaintSaëns, an immediately appealing piece which deserves to be better known. National Theatre Goes Live! The Hurstpierpoint Film Society and Hurstpierpoint Players are delighted to welcome the National Theatre to the village
cinema at the Players Theatre to screen live broadcasts from 2015. David Saitch, Chair of the Film Society, originally had the idea of screening live broadcasts and approached Richard Coney, Chair of Hurst Players to see if they would be interested in doing this as a joint venture. The
Players enthusiastically agreed, who then applied for the necessary planning permission for the installation of a satellite dish at the theatre. Now installed, we can enjoy a fantastic on screen, surround sound experience delivering live theatre from the heart of London to the Players Theatre in the heart of Hurstpierpoint. David added that we cannot pick and choose what to show, and are contracted to screen every play the National Theatre decide to transmit live in the 2015 season, though we may choose to screen ‘encore’ performances in addition to the live ones. We will start to screen live broadcasts in the New Year. The first four plays of the 2015 season have been announced and include new works by pre-eminent British playwrights David Hare and Tom Stoppard, an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story Treasure Island as well as a performance of George Bernard Shaw’s satire Man and Superman starring Ralph Fiennes.

Boxing Day Wrapped Up
Boxing Day, oh boxing day, is it a visit to the in-laws or a visit from the outlaws? Is it a trip to the sales, or a day back at work? Maybe it’s a day to spend with the grandchildren, or a day to be free of the kids? A day to relish, a day to dread, but how did it come to be? My childhood myth was that it was about boxing, given that was the most logical explanation to a youngster, but of course that’s not true. I got a little older and was told it was about boxes that Christmas presents were given in, that it was a day for putting them out with the rubbish. That seemed plausible for a while but again it’s not really true. The truth is, the real reason remains unknown and the term Boxing Day is derived from more than one source, each of which remains as valid as the other and contributes to the day we have today. In the Middle Ages alms boxes were placed in churches and collections would take place. These would be opened on Boxing Day and the contents would be shared among the poor of the Parish. Boxing Day also earned its’ name because it was a day
off for servants who had to work on Christmas Day. They would be given gift boxes in thanks for their efforts the previous day and throughout the year. The 26th December was historically the day that trades people used to collect their Christmas box or tip while they travelled their usual round. Samuel Pepys noted it in his 17th Century diary. Tipping the milkman or the paperboy was a custom that is slowly dying out as more people get their milk from the supermarket and gather their news online. Ironically, newspapers have only been published and delivered on Boxing Day since the late twentieth century. Boxing Day is also St. Stephen’s Day and is remembered in some places with feasting. To many people in the United Kingdom St. Stephen’s Day is most widely known via the lyric to the carol “Good King Wenceslas” from the hospitality offered by a King to a poor man gathering winter fuel.

Back in the United Kingdom football and rugby matches are ubiquitous on Boxing Day. Whether at a local or a national level, these matches are often local derbies, which minimise travel for supporters as well as adding a little spice to the atmosphere. In more recent times the Boxing Day Sale has begun to replace the New Year Sale. Some stores open before dawn on Boxing Day, such is the retailers desire to get people in through the doors and turn the sale into an event. Not long ago this would have been unthinkable. But, such is the attraction of online shopping at Christmas, the internet age has seen bricks and mortar retailers come up with ever more imaginative ideas to claw back some of the ground they have lost to their online rivals. A little closer to home, this Boxing Day will see the annual Ditchling Mummers seasonal play outside the Bull Hotel, which has been running annually since the late 1980’s. For the energetic there is the tenth annual Turners Hill four-mile cross-country run. And a little further afield there is the traditional Eastbourne Bandstand Concert, which has been a seafront staple since 1935. So Boxing Day may be a day with its’ name derived from different sources, but it remains a day for all the family, with something for everyone to do. And if that is not enough, then of course there is always something else that historically began on Boxing Day - Pantomime!

Last week, in the middle of the Christmas comings and goings, I had to take Archie my dog to the vet. As always, I was lost in admiration for her skill and patience, as well as her encyclopaedic knowledge of all things animal. I have no idea how vets do their job. At least doctors know what species is coming through the door. Even if they don’t know what the problem will be, the patients can explain their symptoms, but as Archie and I sat in the vet’s waiting room, we were joined by a Rottweiler, a gerbil, a cat in a carrying case and a large puppy which resembled nothing so much as a small bear. None of them could speak a word of English and all of them were unhappy. The Rottweiler was about the size of a pit pony and although he could have done pretty much anything he wanted to, he was content to lie on the floor and stare fi xedly at the puppy, which responded to this attention by peeing on its owner – twice. I had some sympathy with it. The gerbil, on the other hand, was completely relaxed about his surroundings and was using the time to give his cage a bit of a tidy-up, while the cat, an elderly one according to its owner, contented itself by miaowing in that vaguely reproachful tone they use to tell you when you’ve let the side down. Archie, who’s a sensitive soul, simply hid under my chair and shivered. I suppose it was all in a day’s work for the practice, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if somebody had arrived with a canary or an aardvark, or if an old man with a white beard had brought in a reindeer.

Game for Anything Now that winter is closing in, dark evenings needn’t stop you from having fun while enjoying some friendly competition. And luckily, there is a thriving games scene right here in Mid Sussex If your usual experience of board games is a Christmas round of Monopoly with your relatives, you’ll be pleased to discover that times have changed. I spoke to Mike Bliss, who gathered together the Burgess Hill Board Gamers in 1997 and has not looked back since; he now owns 600 board games that players can sample. With no membership, the club is very informal, holding meetings each Wednesday evening at one another’s houses where new players can simply turn up and join in. “It’s a thriving social scene with a wide age range from 20’s to 60’s,” Mike explained. “If people want to learn a new game, we can give them help beforehand so they can join in.”

I wondered what the games entail; apparently it’s possible to fly planes, build trains, explore dungeons and race chariots, certainly more fun than sitting in front of the TV all evening! When Mike started collecting games, most came from Germany and few rules had been translated into English; now that’s changed and rules are easy to download in our native language. There are online tutorials and videos that make learning easy to grasp and there will always be someone to show you if you’d prefer real tuition. I researched a few of the most popular games and discovered a world where fantasy and adventure hang on the roll of a dice and tactical skill of the players. ‘Castle Ravenloft’ encourages players to co-operate in order to stay alive, slay monsters and achieve the goal of a particular quest. ‘Jamaica’ is a tactical pirate game with player interaction and side goals such as detours for treasure. In ‘Stone Age’, players use tribe members to expand their village with a balance of luck and planning while in ‘Chicago’ there is no luck factor and the player who accumulates the most money is the winner. Although Mike also has 150 card games, they are not standard decks and players build decks to achieve success. If conventional packs of cards are more your passion, the Good Causes Whist Club in Hassocks could prove a great place to start. Duplicate Bridge Club could be right up your street. Meeting each Monday, the club welcomes new members and has an informative website to explain the possibilities on offer. There are competitions where members can accrue points throughout the season and there is a lively social element with a large membership. It seems that there is little excuse to hibernate this winter; the dark evenings only expanding the possibilities for socialising while playing your favourite or newly learned game. It would certainly be possible to fill every evening with a different pursuit, from traditional card games to up to the minute, complex fantasy games. Whilst I can grow flowers, arranging them is not my forte. I do not have the patience or skill required for Floral Art, being more of a ‘Sweet peas shoved in a jam jar’ sort of gal. However, I love to deck the halls at Christmas. Here are a few tips and ideas for arrangements that are so simple – even I can do them. It’s important to give any plant material a long drink before bringing indoors. Stand flowers and foliage overnight in a deep bucket of water in a cool place. The water-fi lled stems will cope better with dry, centrally-heated rooms. Think of a real Christmas tree in exactly the same way as you would a cut flower. Over the festive period, a large tree will take up several pints, so use a tree support that has an in-built water reservoir and check it regularly. An arrangement comprising of solely artificial flowers usually looks, errr … artificial, but judicious use of faux flowers and berries can look wonderful. The trick is to place a few artificial stems in an arrangement of mostly natural ones; the effect will appear naturalistic but you’ll have the benefit of a longer-lasting display with no staining pollen or sticky rosehips dropping onto the carpet. Candle light is lovely, but a naked flame doesn’t make for a relaxing evening if you have young children or pets to consider. Instead, try a string of battery operated fairy lights. Christmas Eve? 11pm? House a mess? Don’t panic! Here’s how to make a decoration in five minutes flat: take a large plate and place a potted cyclamen in the centre, drape a light string around the plate, scatter with pinecones and ivy to hide the wiring - and that’s it!

Another decoration, requiring a little more planning, is to fi nd a container made of plain glass; preferably a square-sided ‘tank’ vase, or a goldfish bowl. Take some allium seedheads, (the ones I told you not to chuck on the compost heap in last months column), and give them a gentle misting with metallic spray paint. Gently push the seedheads into the container, randomly threading a light string through them as you go. Use baubles in gold or silver to fi ll any gaps. In a low-lit room, this arrangement seems to float an inch above the table. Your guests will exclaim, “Oh, you’re so clever!” when, in fact, you’ve stolen the idea from me. Being the Season of Goodwill, I’ll graciously say nothing and let you bask in the glory. Happy Christmas - Peas on Earth!

I spent much of this last blazing, unforgettable summer in or around water, caught between contemplation and activity

Perhaps we instinctively head to water in times of change; it used to mark the beginning of the unknown at the outer edges of the familiar. To set out across an unchartered sea was to sail away from the world; nothing except spaceflight can truly replace that sensation now. One crystal sharp day, I took my canoe out on Ardingly Reservoir. For a time I was the only person on the water, no chatter, no engines, no noise other than goose cackle and the whirr of dragonfly wings. Spending a few scarce hours in a place largely absent from traffic noise was a revelation; it allowed my ears to re-tune to subtle sounds normally eradicated by the hum of cars, talk and footsteps. Natural sound recordist Chris Watson tells how in the 1960’s there were still about 40 places in this country where you couldn’t hear any man made noise. Now he is able to find and record only a couple of such locations; what does that say about our increasing distance from truly wild spaces? On Ardingly, it was the absence of human sound that allowed me to hear further and therefore travel more deeply into my surroundings. Perhaps the water amplified or altered sound for I felt I could hear for miles; the distant wing beat of a heron, the lively shimmy of silver birch leaves in soft breeze and the tiny eruption of bubbles signalling the breath of a fish. The experience expanded me; I felt mentally larger, perhaps because no part of my senses was closed in order to shut out noise. It was a sensation of letting in. Another morning, more recently in the nip and leaf fall of autumn, I sat on the bank of a man made pond on the Ashdown Forest. Again, the sensation of being free from human sound opened up the landscape like a door. Sight too was heightened; no screens, no relentless visual information feeding me
a framed and structured landscape. Just stillness, which made every tiny movement stand out in contrast; the glimpse of a scrap of deer hide between birches. One glorious moment caught me completely unawares; a pair of kingfishers shot by in pursuit or joie de vivre, they turned their dazzle of Titian blue on edge so that I was almost brushed by iridescence as they passed. It was as though two tiny bolts of summer sky had skimmed across the water of reflected autumn. Among the muted browns of fallen leaves, another colour stood out; the blood red cap of a poisonous toadstool shouting danger to any hungry, passing creature. Perhaps if we can find moments, however transitory, where we can escape human distraction, we can experience this heightened sensory openness. Rare though it may seem, it’s there when we truly wish to discover it.

Food Glorious Christmas Food This month, for Christmas, we give you two rather different meals. The first is Seriously Over the Top and the second Really Rather More Realistic. You can, of course take from either.
Seriously Over the Top Before eating anything, except perhaps a macadamia nut or two, we need a drink. Pink champagne makes a perfect aperitif with its delicate flavour and fantastic salmon colour. My chosen starter, Soft-shelled Crab, used to be a lot rarer before the invention of freezing. Male and female crabs moult in the Spring, while males moult only in the Autumn. Also the moulting season is very short, and there’s only a 5-6 hour window of opportunity between when the crabs shed their hard shell, and the new, soft shell hardens again. The two best places for fresh soft-shelled crabs are New England and Venice. However these superb crustaceans are now fairly widely available frozen and are excellent. l Let the crabs thaw gradually.

Squeeze out the contents of the sack you’ll find directly behind the cut you’ve just made. l Lift one pointed end of the crab’s outer shell. Remove and discard the gills. Repeat on the other side. l Finally, turn the crab over and snip off the small flap known as the apron. Rinse the entire crab well and pat it dry. l Now you choose; either grill or fry it in sunflower or grapeseed oil. Serve with brown bread, butter and, almost as a garnish, a simple green salad.
We follow the crab with a little (it’s very rich) foie gras, out of a tin. After living in France for seven years, my wife and I decided that duck foie gras was rather more than marginally better than goose. Our daughter became a vegetarian. Here we change the champagne’s colour to a classic straw. And lots of it!

White Truffle Risotto
Next, from the seriously delicious to the divine; a White Truffle Risotto. Generously serves four. 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil at least ½ a medium onion peeled and finely chopped 2 or 3 small shallots peeled and finely chopped 300g risotto rice a glass of dry white wine a generous litre of chicken (or vegetable) stock ½ teaspoon salt, or as needed 2 teaspoons unsalted butter 100g freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano freshly ground black pepper white truffle 1. In a largish heavy casserole or pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and shallots and cook, stirring often until golden, about 8 minutes. Add the rice and stir to coat with the oil. Continue stirring until the rice become translucent, 1 to 2 minutes. 2. Pour in the wine and stir well until it has evaporated. Add ½ a cup of hot stock and ½ a teaspoon of salt. Cook, stirring constantly, until all the stock has been absorbed. Continue to add hot stock in small batches, just enough to completely moisten the rice, and cook until absorbed. Adjust the heat so the rice is simmering very gently. Continue stirring while adding the stock until the rice is creamy but al dente. This should take from 15 to 20 minutes from the time the wine was added. 3. Remove the dish from the heat. Beat in the butter until it’s completely melted, then add the grated cheese. Adjust the seasoning to taste. Finally, triumphantly, extravagantly, using the taglia tartuffi (truffle slicer) which naturally you bought when you bought your white truffle, slice lots and lots of truffle on to the risotto. You may never want to eat anything else ever again.
For the main course I briefly toyed with the idea of finding a swan or a peacock, but even with long and careful cooking I’m not sure that the result would have tasted very good. But I did want a bird; birds actually, one inside the other. As it’s Christmas, you certainly won’t want to be doing the boning and stuffing yourself; it takes time, skill, practice and patience and is, believe me, well worth paying someone else to do. So now it’s just a question of how many. I’ve found recipes for from three to twelve bird roasts. How many depends on your appetite, number of guests and for how long you want to eat cold leftovers. At this point I’d recommend a Trou Normand; this is a slug of calvados designed as they say in polite society ‘to aid digestion’ or to put it in a more crudely ‘to burn a hole through your stomach in order to make room for more food.’ Next, cheese; a perfectly ripe Stilton please, accompanied by a moderately earthy Rioja. The cheese will be followed by a dark chocolate mousse, with a pot of double cream to hand. Finally (not, I hope terminally finally) a bottle of Green Chartreuse. This, in liquid terms is as heavenly as the white truffles. The recipe using 130 herbs, plants and flowers dates from 1605. Four hundred and ten years of monks can’t be wrong. Rather More Realistic To start we have Gravad Lax. A couple of years ago I made a resolution to eat Gravad Lax rather than smoked salmon. It’s a resolution I have kept and not regretted for a moment. Here I would recommend a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, the wine which, apart from at the very end, I propose drinking throughout this feast. Our reasonable but rather good main course is a roast guinea fowl stuffed with chestnuts. Roast potatoes and perhaps a purée of Brussels sprouts both look and taste good here.
Guinea Fowl with Roast Chestnuts
200g of cooked chestnuts (use the tinned, already peeled variety)
For the sauce 150ml of white wine 150ml of chicken stock 1 tablespoon of redcurrant jelly Heat your oven to 190°C/gas mark 5. Season the guinea fowl inside and out. Halve the lemon, put it inside the bird with the bay leaves and a couple of thyme sprigs. Roast in a tin for quarter of an hour, drizzled with a little olive oil. Meanwhile, strip the remaining thyme leaves from their stalks. Mix the
1 guinea fowl, about 1.3kg/3lb 1 lemon 2 bay leaves several thyme sprigs 3 tablespoon of olive oil 500g of potatoes, unpeeled, cut into chunks 3 garlic cloves, unpeeled and bruised 200g of chestnut mushrooms, halved if large

potatoes, thyme, garlic and remaining oil together, season. Put the potatoes around the bird, then return it to the oven for 45 mins. Stir the mushrooms into the potatoes along with the chestnuts. Roast until the mushrooms are cooked, another quarter of an hour. Spoon the vegetables onto a warm platter and put the cooked bird back among them. Keep it all warm while you make the sauce. Boil the pan juices on the hob, add the wine, stock and jelly. Bring back to the boil, stirring to dissolve the jelly, until the sauce is slightly thickened. Taste for seasoning. Serve on the table in a jug. After some perfectly ripe Camambert or Brie, it’s time for pudding. The Over the Top and the Reasonable come together for chocolate mousse, accompanied by the sublime Italian liqueur, amaretto, very possibly a lot of it.

Chocolate Mousse for Four 170g/6oz of best dark chocolate (at least 60% cocoa solids), roughly chopped 7 free-range egg whites ¼ of a teaspoon lemon juice 40g/1½oz of caster sugar 1. Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water (don’t let the bottom of the bowl touch the water).
Although I might be a good cake consumer, I am not a cake maker at all. So, ever expedient and resourceful, I turned to my friend Kate who, as they say, came up with the goods: “There are a few tips to remember when making Christmas cake; soak your fruit in your favourite intoxicant – I use a mix of Brandy, Madeira and Ginger Wine. Whip as much air into
2. In a large, clean bowl whisk the egg whites and lemon juice until they form soft peaks. The lemon juice stabilises the egg whites, making them easier to work with. Add the sugar and continue to whisk until firm peaks form. Don’t whisk beyond this stage or the egg whites will start to collapse and separate into dry froth and runny liquid, and you’ll lose all the air that you’ve just whisked in. 3. When the chocolate has melted, remove the bowl from the heat. Quickly and vigorously whisk one-third of the egg whites into the hot chocolate, until thick and well combined. If you add the egg whites in too slowly, their cold temperature can make the hot chocolate seize and solidify resulting in a lumpy mousse. Using a spatula fold the remaining egg whites into the chocolate mixture until they are all incorporated. Don’t overmix at this stage or you›ll knock out the air bubbles and the mousse will be too dense. 4. Spoon the mousse mixture into four glasses. Chill in the fridge until set, 2-3 hours.

Line your cake tin with baking paper and wrap it in layers of newspaper to protect it while in the oven, fruit burns easily and a bouquet of charred sultana is not what you are after. Feed it, love it, nurture it. Keep it in a cool spot in your home. It will get
better and better with time, so make it early and drench it weekly with a tablespoon of your chosen tipple. You don’t have to ice it until nearer the time but when you feel ready, brush it with apricot jam, and cloak with a comforting layer of marzipan followed by stark white icing. By 3pm on Boxing Day, a generous slice with a fresh cuppa is hard to beat.”

John Vernon Lord, a life of illustration It began with his grandmother’s scrapbook on a rainy afternoon and developed to a lifelong passion and eminent illustration career. I met John Vernon Lord in his Ditchling studio to talk about his life of illustration.
Sitting in John Vernon Lord’s studio, with the man himself, is something of a marvel to me. It is the studio of my dreams; bookshelves stuffed from floor to ceiling in organised chaos. His vast collection of classical music providing the soundtrack to many hundreds of hours of drawing. Real life relics live on outside the pages; Alice’s ‘Drink Me’ bottle sits engorged on a windowsill. Jumbles of pens and paper, rulers and runs of his little black notebooks surround his desk, packing it in tight with absorbed creative energy. Apothecary-like drawers fill the wall behind his desk, some temptingly left a crack open. I imagine them filled with his characters, running amuck away from prying eyes in and out of the miscellany. The smell of paper and ink fills the warm air. We settle into two soft chairs, and there on the table between us is an old copy of ‘The Giant Jam Sandwich’ (first published 1972), my well-worn and loved copy akin to this before me. The fun and honest illustrations, full of intricate detail and thought, unequivocally belong to this unassuming,
wise and fascinating gentleman. I quell my hand and press on. Beginning at the beginning, we start with John’s childhood. “I was brought up by my grandmother. Every Saturday or Sunday, if it rained, she bought out this huge sketchbook, and told me to draw something - cowboys and Indians, knights in castles or a farm. This was during the war so paper was scarce, and she made sure I covered every bit. If I left the sky free, she would tell me to put aeroplanes or birds flying, or clouds; I was never allowed to leave anything blank. That’s my first serious memory of drawing.” John suggests perhaps this is where he adopted his intricate style, and began to hone it at school where art was his favourite subject. By the age of twelve he knew he wanted to be an artist or illustrator. Actually, he corrects himself, he wanted to be an illustrator and not an artist. “An artist is a Damien Hurst, a Tracy Emin, Jake and Dinos Chapman, whereas I like to illustrate books. An illustrator is reliant upon text or a brief, whereas an artist can do what he or she wants.” Rebelling against his public school, John went off to art college in Salford between 1956 and 1960. “The education was clumsy, but enjoyable,” he laughs. It is also where he met his wife, Denie. John moved on to the Central (now Central St Martins), but did not complete the post graduate course he was on as John Burningham, one of his teachers, said he ought to earn a living and stop being an art student. Not one to dally about, John got a recommendation for an agent from his tutor

S R Badmin, another artist, and at the age of 21 joined Saxon Artists, where he worked for 13 years. To supplement his wages, John took up part time teaching, but soon found himself as a full time illustration teacher at Brighton Art College (then Polytechnic, now University). “I still give lectures there after 53 years association,” he tells me. “I was professor of illustration from 1986 until I retired in 1999. And because I was bald headed and bearded and absentminded, they gave me an honorary Doctorate.” Being surrounded with young artistic minds for 40 years of his teaching career has kept John himself vibrant, and pushed him to grow with modern trends. “Most people have their own children, and if they are lucky, grandchildren, but to be in constant relationship with people of that age was a terrific privilege.” From his years of teaching, John developed a philosophy for his students; “I believe you have to be an individual.

There is no point in aping fashions, because if the fashion changes and you don’t have the technical resources, you’re stuffed. If you can, it’s best to get work based on your own originality, your own ideas and your own way of drawing or illustrating.” John was taught by both Cecil Collins, associated with the surrealist movement, and Mervyn Peake, an English writer, artist and poet. “Mervyn was wonderful in teaching composition, but more importantly creating an atmosphere by textures, movement, the appearance of people’s faces, using black, and so on.” Seeing how all of these things could successfully be taught perhaps inspired John in his own teaching career. “Talent’s useful, but you’ve got to work at it!” he tells me. Even with a natural talent, drawing is a skill to be practiced: “To earn a living, you immediately have to be able to draw everything,” which is exactly what John did.
His drawing career started with technical pictures for WHSmith and interior magazines. “I never thought I would be drawing a lavatory,” he tells me, laughing. But he couldn’t be choosy. “It was a privilege to be given a job, and you just damn well made sure you were able to draw it!” Keeping up with the times, John embraces technology, although he relishes in the basics. “I like the scratch of the pen hitting the paper, the noise of it, the rubbing out. Although I do blog,” he tells me. “I was persuaded by my son in law, Leo Hartas, who is an illustrator, and my granddaughter, Freya, who just got a First at Falmouth.” I can’t help but notice John has just disclosed

three generations of illustrators in his family, which is curious as before this his father was a third generation baker. Although, John assures me, his father was very supportive of his illustration career. One way in which John has developed his distinct and striking style is by working in a grid structure. For me this creates a pull between the constraint of the grid and the wild, imaginative pictures, which are often escaping the page boarders. Composition is obviously very important to John, as he explains in reference to his illustration ‘The Fox and the Wild Boar’ from ‘Aesop’s Fables’ (1989). “You see things are on an angle, even the fox’s head, it gives a dynamic to the conversation they are having. It’s a marvellous fable actually. The fox is saying, ‘Why are you whetting your tusks against the tree?’ And the boar says, ‘Just in case, I need to wage war with somebody.’ Which is just like modern politicians, the arms race and all that stuff.” By using the diagonal angles, John achieves illustrations which jump from the page right out into the room. “Even in formal composition, when everything is quite still, dynamic can be achieved by putting one thing on the diagonal,” John tells me as he thumbs through his books. He knows

where each and every illustration is, like old friends on a page, and is keen for me to understand. Being drawn to this structured way of drawing, John took things even further when he illustrated ‘The Nonsense Verse of Edward Lear’ (1984). “There are 330 illustrations, about 250 of them limericks, and I prescribed each limerick with that constraint. Like the limerick itself has its own structure and very fi rm rhyming scheme, I just thought I’m going to do my illustrations with a structure as well.” Is it not surprising to learn that John loves maths, with a particular appreciation for the number 42. In one of his notebooks is a rough sketch of the 42 boxes left by the baker in Lewis Carol’s ‘The Hunting of a Snark’ (2006). As we talk about numbers John becomes quite philosophical, and I can see how important he thinks them. “I was very poor at maths at school, but I love it now. It has it’s own world. We need numbers to understand ourselves; we have dates, years, months. And it’s man invented, although nature has within itself the potential for numbers, we have imposed it upon everything.” John draws me a couple of magic number squares before saying, “Anyway, I mustn’t www.sussexliving.com
talk too much about that...” Talking about the potential for numbers in nature makes me think about one of John’s pictures in particular: the wasps shooting up into the sky in ‘The Giant Jam Sandwich’. They are in a grid system, a rhythmical structure which is so relevant to maths, and reminds me of the inside of a sunflower. However, as soon as I mention this book John tells me the story of how it came to be, which is much more interesting. “That book started off on holiday in Devon when we had three young girls, and we went with another family with young boys. We were having a picnic and both of the boys got hysterical because a wasp was hopping about. I quickly tried to calm them down, and off the top of my head invented the giant jam sandwich story, which quelled their anxiety. When I went home I thought that might be a book worth doing.” Like most creatives, John draws from his own life experiences; “The jam sandwich bit was a notion that when I was young, my dad, if we ever had a picnic, always used to put some strawberry jam away from the picnic to attract wasps from where we were settled. A lot of ideas are anecdotes from your own life; you can exploit them and bring them into fantasy.” Living in Ditchling for much of his life has also had a significant influence on John’s illustrations, particularly for the ‘Aesop’s Fables’ which are largely set in the village. Taking me through the book, John points out the recognisable landmarks - the church drawn from the herb garden, farms and barns, the Downs, the Beacon and vineyards. A favourite sledging hill, the doctor’s surgery in the fable about a quack, the famous high street without the traffic, the village pond, the graveyard and some things which no longer exist, like a tree which was knocked down in the storm of 1987. reminded, and slightly surprised, at how many are set in the village. It is clear the affinity which John has for the habitat surrounding him. Ideas do come from other places as well, however. “I love long train journeys; looking out the window lots of things emerge, but you can’t rush to the studio ‘cos you’re on a train.” This is where John’s notebooks come in handy, and he has hundreds of them. They are small black notebooks, dog-eared and soft with use, bursting with doodles, writing, sketches and ideas. He shows me his daughter’s garden shed, his granddaughter’s uni digs, and intricately drawn mazes. “The writing is often very wobbly because I’m on a train or in a car,” he tells me. Perhaps it is something about the movement which generates ideas and lets them flow easily, and John agrees; “Yes,

walking in the country is marvellous for thinking.” He carries a notebook everywhere, always, and gets very tetchy if he can’t find it. “It drives Denie, my wife, mad when I’ve lost it!” Even for the middle of the night inspiration John writes in his book. “Of course in the morning you can’t read it and if you can, it wasn’t as good as you thought it was!” he confesses. “There is something about the night which, apart from being when the biggest worries come to you, your ideas are more fanciful than you think. They are not as reliable,” From the notebook to the page, John builds his illustrations until he has a vision of how he would like the finished piece to look. “Of course it always fails to achieve what you had hoped for,” he tells me. “It’s rather like if you draw from direct observation, there it is before you and you are interpreting it into two dimensions. There is no such thing as line, but you are turning it into a line. You are giving it a metamorphosis. With the imagination there it is in your minds’ eye, and you can see it in a vague way, and when bringing it into reality, you can’t check it like you can observational things.” Of course, much of the very nature of illustrating is taking images from your minds eye, as well as from the text before you. “Illustration is largely about picking the moment in the text which both attracts you, and also you feel important,” John tells me. “And you’ve got to look at different ways of interpreting it: your own drawing has to be individual enough to carry the weight of your ideas.” When illustrating Lewis Carroll’s Alice books (2009 and 2011), John thought around the problem of repetition in playful and imaginative ways. The first thing he did was not have Alice in it. “She only appears at the very end in the dream and the very beginning when she is going through the mirror,” John tells me. Otherwise, she is sometimes hidden behind props, such as chess pieces. The second trick John used was to have whatever Alice says is printed in blue text, giving “a feeling of her presence through the text rather than through the images.” And thirdly, John stretched his mind around the usually illustrated text and chose things people may not think important, like a candle blowing out. All the while we are talking about Alice, John is leafing through ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. At the crocodile poem he stops to read it out loud and says, “That’s a marvellous thing, it’s a quintessence of hypocrisy; grinning with the old fangs…that’s not often illustrated.” He also pays great attention to individual words, often ‘An uproarious noise’, Miserable Aunt Bertha, Jonathan Cape, 1979

pulling them apart to take their literal meaning, for example his illustration of memory: “Memory is the hippocampus in the brain. It’s called a hippocampus because a hippocampus is a seahorse, and it’s shaped like a seahorse, so I thought I would draw it literally.” Given John’s prominent success as both respected teacher and illustrator, he has stayed remarkably out of the limelight. “Obviously one wants to be successful in the sense that it allows you to make the pictures you want to make,” he tells me, “but I don’t like the trappings.” But, John says, he thinks it is important to network, to meet potential publishers and fellow illustrators. Keeping
busy is no problem for John, in fact he is wondering whether it’s time to slow down, having reached 75. This year alone he has had two books published, (‘Drawn to Drawing’, a collection of 300 of his own drawings and James Joyce’s ‘Finnegans Wake’) and he says that his wife would probably like to see more of him. But, ever the creative, John has plans bubbling for the future. “I’d quite like to do a book of my own,” he muses, “about a man on a desert island and a fly. I love that Ogden Nash poem, ‘The Lord in his wisdom invented the fly/but forgot to tell us the reason why’.” Humbly, John goes on to say, “It sounds a bit pretentious, but it’s this awful thing of wanting to do something profound, and it gets in the way because you’ve got to be profound yourself to be able to do something that’s profound. Suddenly you realise you are a fly yourself; do you have the wherewithal to create something as magnificent as you had hoped to do? It’s a good challenge though. That profundity is a sort of goal, but it’s falling short of it that almost prevents you from doing it.” It is heartening to hear that such a prolific and pronounced illustrator and creative thinker still wobbles with these insecurities which plague so many of us. It just shows me once again that greatness can come from the most normal of beginnings; a man sitting in his study with a pen in his hand and a picture in his head.

Since 1925 the Carol Party choir have been singing throughout December, bringing cheer into homes in the West Hoathly, Sharpthorne area, and raising money for St Catherine’s Hospice. Doreen Walker remembers their history I believe the Sharpthorne Carol Party was started in 1925 by the Comber Family, builders in Sharpthorne. I and five other members joined in the late 1940’s. One of my first memories was singing at Dalingridge Place. Lady Margaret Duckworth would lead the family in, and she and her three sons, their wives and guests were all in full evening dress. To we teenagers it was quite an impressive evening. Often the weather played havoc with our travelling round. I remember once one very frozen night we had sung to Peter Herbert’s family at Gravetye stables and tried to walk down to Gravetye Manor. It was so icy several members fell over and we were lucky not to have broken bones that evening. We also had a few evenings when things didn’t go to plan – an Oast house fire, a runaway vehicle, power cuts and singed hair on candles. But, as the saying goes, “The show must go on”. There was always a warm welcome from the Hill family at Duckyll’s Holt. The house was already full to bursting with their friends and neighbours before we squeezed in and it was always a jolly audience to sing to, with lots of requests for their favourite Carols. The hot punch helped revive our throats and the refreshments were many and varied. Diana Hill’s mince pies are the best you could wish for or have ever tasted. Our last call every Christmas Eve was to Gravetye Manor. Some of the Carol Party then went back to Pauline and Steve Comber’s house for refreshments and what we called the “Count-up”. Back in the 1940’s and 50’s we felt pleased to have collected £30-40. Now the average total is considerably more. Over many years lots of charities have benefitted, and altogether many thousands of pounds have been raised by our singing at Christmas.

This 5 mile walk to the west of Hurstpierpoint starts from the centre of the village and follows mainly field paths through mixed farmland with short stretches of minor road. It visits the village of Albourne, now bypassed by the A23 trunk road before heading north to the outskirts of Sayers Common. It is likely to be muddy in places particularly after periods of heavy rain. With your back to the village centre, go to the far right hand corner of the car park and out into the High Street. Turn left and after a few yards, go right into West Furlong Lane. Turn right on a narrow path alongside the parish room. Cross the B2117 to the path opposite and follow this to a four-way path junction. Maintain direction and follow the obvious path ahead through a succession of kissing gates to a rough track, Bullfinch Lane and turn left. Shortly after passing Grange Cottage, look for a signed path on your right and follow this meandering path to pass underneath the A23 to pick up a wide headland path out to the B2118. Cross the road to the opening opposite, bear right and follow along a right hand field edge.
On reaching a crossing path, bear right over a bridge and follow the obvious path uphill. Continue ahead on a wide grassy path which eventually narrows and joins The Street close to it’s junction with Church Lane. Walk up The Street through Albourne and out to the B2116 by the Pound. The Street has a number of old and historic buildings, including the Gallops which dates from the 17th century. The Pound was a collection point for straying animals. Cross the B2116 diagonally to the signed path and follow up through a trading estate. Turn left in front of Moore House, then right to Potters Field. Turn right in front of the dwelling at Potters Field, go through a gate and follow along a left hand field edge to another gate. Go through some temporary fencing and turn left on a wide grassy track. Go through bushes and over a stile and bear right. The way ahead is well signed and follows field headlands eventually joining Reed’s Lane on the outskirts of Sayers Common. Turn right along Reed’s Lane, and just past a 30 mph sign, take the signed path on your right. Initially walk parallel with the road, then bear right up a left hand field edge to go over a footbridge and stile to an enclosed section of path. Go over another stile and through a rough field to the B2118. Cross to the pavement opposite and turn right. In about 100 yards go left on a surfaced track, and at the entrance to Coombe Farm, go left and follow a concrete track over the A23 and out to Langton Lane. Turn right down Langton Lane and after 100 yards, go left up a bank on a signed path and into a large field. Towards the bottom of the field, go right over a stile and plank bridge and across the

next field ahead. Cross another footbridge and follow a right hand field edge to go through a gap in the hedge then half left across the next field. Cross a footbridge and take the left of two paths to a field corner. Follow a confi ned path between houses out to Western Road. Turn right and near the top of the road, go left through a barrier, and follow Manor Road out to Cuckfield Road. Turn right then left into Trinity road and the car park.

Simply the best I was talking to Bill Schaeffer and Guy Barwell, the founders of The Implant Centre with clinics in Haywards Heath and Hove. Internationally recognised dental surgeons, in demand worldwide as lecturers and teachers, they are also qualified medical doctors and their intention in setting up the Centre was simply to establish the finest dental implant facility in the country. Designed to offer a superb clinical environment for the professional team, the state-of-the-art centres are also stylish and comfortable for patients. In fact the reception area in Hove made me think of an art café.

When I asked Bill to explain it, he laughed and said “Yes we’re very proud of that. It’s from the Private Dentistry Awards - the ‘Oscars’ of the dental profession. We won it in 2012 and I have to tell you that we are very excited about being short-listed again this year.”

immediately onto the implant – an instant implant and an instant tooth. “All patients follow the same path through the centre.” Guy explained “They have an initial and very comprehensive assessment including 3D X-rays where necessary, then we prepare and agree a detailed treatment plan - so that there are no surprises”, he grinned. “After that they’ll have surgery, which in most cases is very quick, usually taking less time in the chair than a crown or root treatment. It is virtually pain-free, and the recovery is normally simple and straightforward. “ After a few months when the implant has had time to be integrated with the jawbone, the new permanent crown is fitted either at the Centre, or by the patient’s own dentist. The crowns, which are perfectly matched to the patient’s other teeth, are manufactured on-site in The Implant Centre’s high tech dental laboratory. The final outcome will be replacement teeth that look, feel and function exactly like the patient’s own teeth.
How much for a new life? I was keen to find out how much my new implants would cost and discovered that the initial consultation with one of The Implant Centre’s specialist implant co-coordinators is free. This informal conversation is designed to answer any questions a potential patient might have and to establish their suitability for implant treatment. Going forward, a detailed assessment with one of the surgeons including an examination, X-rays and a comprehensive personal treatment plan costs £150. Thereafter, costs vary depending on the treatment required and there are a number of payment options available. It is worth remembering that while dental work of the highest quality like this can never be cheap, its value can be life-changing.
I asked how long the average implant process took, although I realised of course that the complexity of the problem would to some extent dictate the time involved. Bowel Cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK, but if caught early, the cure rate is over 90%. Decembeard is growing hairy in support. Decembeard is the name of the campaign run throughout the month of December by the charity Beating Bowel Cancer. The charity is committed to providing information and support to all those people affected by bowel cancer, and their team of specialist bowel cancer nurses supports patients and their families by phone, by email, on their web forum and via social media. Beating Bowel Cancer are determined to increase awareness of the issue throughout the country and in the process they hope to raise £250,000 to help them in their work. The idea is pretty straightforward. Just think Movember but hairier. If you are a man and you don’t have a beard, get your friends and work colleagues to sponsor you, then simply throw the razor away until at least the first of January. Sure it will be a bit on the itchy side at first, but when it’s a new year and a new you, who knows? You may even like the look and I apologise for saying this, but it could grow on you. Remember W G Grace and Brian Blessed had to start somewhere. On the other hand, if you’re a real man and ‘beardie’ already, why not obtain
sponsorship by promising to do something interesting with it, like changing your beard’s colour or shape? Let your creativity run free. For example, the ancient Egyptians used to weave gold thread into their beards and as a bonus if you try that, you may make some new friends. Friends
There is nothing as rewarding and satisfying as feeling you have helped to make a positive difference in the world. This is particularly true for the League of Friends of the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. Initially set up in 1956, at the old Cuckfield Hospital, the League moved to the Princess Royal when it opened in 1991 and has gone from strength to strength. Last year alone, the organisation raised a staggering £365,000 of funding, to improve the hospital and support both patients and staff. “Our aim is to provide facilities and equipment to benefit patients,” explains Chairman, Bill Rawlinson, who will be stepping down this winter after three years in charge. The League needs to replace him with someone who has time to devote to the running of the League, with the support of all the trustees. Someone with experience in running a business would be most welcome, and would be helping to provide a very valuable service to the patients, the hospital, and the community. Originally, organisations like the League of Friends were set up to provide items such as chairs and televisions, to make patients’ lives more comfortable. But in these austere times, their role has widened to provide money for medical equipment. As Honorary Secretary and Vice Chairman, Mercedes Madden, says, “We’re providing tools for staff to care for patients more efficiently. Instead of them having to wait for funding, they can access us on a bi-monthly basis with requests.” Recent acquisitions funded by the League include, eight state of the art intensive care beds, physiotherapy equipment, a re-curtaining project for the whole hospital and the development of a Discharge Lounge, where patients can wait in comfort, with access to refreshments and a TV, before going home. What’s more, the League have financed the addition of a Rapid Access Medical Unit,

adjacent to A&E. This means that GPs can refer patients to be assessed by specialists and they can be diagnosed, treated or admitted, without having to wait in A&E. The unit, which has been open for a year, is proving to be a very popular and useful resource. In 2005, the League opened the hospital’s coffee shop, which provides the everyday funding for the valuable work they do. Over the years the cafe has expanded and now boasts a weatherproof conservatory, as well as outside space when the weather permits. Funding also comes from donations, legacies and events, such as golf days and an annual Ball, which includes a welcome glass of bubbly, lovely 3-course meal and disco dancing until midnight! The coffee shop are always looking for volunteers, so if you can commit to just three hours a week, you get a chance to join a friendly team, get a free hospital parking ticket and have fun while doing something worthwhile. As one volunteer tells me, “Everyone’s really nice, it’s busy and it’s good to think I’m helping.” The League of Friends does such worthwhile work for our local community - why not join them? i v V a a c v e i ! V Singing and raising money for charities, Vivace! is hitting all the right notes.
Vivace! may be only a small choir, but it has a big heart. Their motto is ‘Ubi caritas et amor’ or ‘Where there is love and charity’ and it could not be more appropriate. Since they founded the choir eleven years ago, the Ditchling-based singers have given over 150 performances and raised over £100,000 for local and national charities. The formula is a simple one. The members, both men and women, have a passion for singing and offer their services to charities and good causes, principally throughout Mid-Sussex but sometimes much further afield. The organisers of these fund-raising concerts engage the choir, pay their modest costs, arrange the venue and then sell the concert tickets for their good cause. Vivace! has over the years performed in venues as diverse as St Dunstan’s (now Blind

Veterans UK), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Brighton Pavilion and the Winter Gardens in Eastbourne, where they sang alongside the band of HM Royal Marines. They are however equally at home in the more modest surroundings of village halls, churches and country houses. I talked with Carolyn Hulatt, the choir’s Chairman, about the joy of singing and Vivace!’s mission. She told me that originally the core members came from the Ditchling Choral Society, hence its connection with Ditchling, but nowadays the members are much further spread and sing with a number of other choirs in addition to Vivace! Carolyn for instance sings with the Brighton Festival Chorus. “We are different to most choral societies,” Carolyn explained. “Currently there are only www.sussexliving.com
twenty two of us and we sing a very varied repertoire. Everything from Baroque to Rock”. She went on, “At a Vivace! concert, you’re likely to hear Mozart on the same programme as Be-bop and Scarborough Fair. Something for everybody in other words.” In addition to offering a whole range of musical styles, concerts usually feature small groups and soloists, often accompanied by instrumentalists from within the choir. Although Vivace! can deliver a big, rounded sound when everyone is singing at full volume – the Hallelujah Chorus is on their list - their concerts can be quite intimate affairs, and in another departure from normal practice, each song is introduced to the audience by a different member of the choir. It is just one of the ‘personal touches’ which are the hallmarks of the choir. Vivace! are led by the outrageously talented Linda Glenn, who is a professional singing coach, in addition to being the choir’s Music Director and they maintain their high standards by means of regular weekly rehearsals in Ditchling. New members are of course very welcome and Carolyn assured me that the choir is a very friendly

gang . “We take our singing very seriously of course, but the audition process is nothing if not humane,” she laughed. This year they have already performed in St Wilfred’s Church, Haywards Heath, Danny House in Hurstpierpoint, and Hurstpierpoint College on behalf of The Yews Partnership, InterAct Stroke Rehabilitation and the Alzheimer’s Society, all of whom have benefitted substantially from the concerts. The choir’s next appearance will be their eagerly awaited Christmas concert in aid of the Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice on the 11th December. The setting will again be in the beautiful venue of Danny House, Hurstpierpoint and of course tickets for the event will include a traditional glass of wine and a mince pie.

Pledge 4 Plastics What is Pledge 4 Plastics? Pledge 4 Plastics is a nationwide initiative to encourage every UK household to recycle more plastic – starting with the pledge to recycle one more plastic bottle a week. Recycling plastic bottles saves a valuable resource from heading to landfill. A plastic bottle could be reborn as a football shirt, garden furniture, kid’s toys, kitchen utensils, pens and even into building products such as fencing and pipes. Plastic bottles from every room in the house could be collected for recycling whatever the colour, shape or size. Plastic packaging makes up 11% of household waste and 40% of that is plastic bottles. The 5 billion plastic bottles thrown away in 2012 were worth around £25 million to the recycling industry and it cost £19 million to dispose of them in landfill. Overall the average UK household uses over 440 plastic bottles per year, but only recycles just over 250 of them.
The recycling process The plastic bottles are taken to the recycling centre and sorted into different plastics. The plastic bottles are then squashed into bales and these bales are shredded to produce flakes. The flakes are washed, sorted depending on whether they float or sink in water and dried by giant industrial driers. The flakes are blown down pipes into bags and the recyclers collect these and transform the plastic into a range of new products.

If you can spare a minimum of two hours per month, you could really make that time count by joining West Sussex County Council’s team of waste prevention volunteers. The Waste Prevention Advisor (WPA) scheme promotes the best ways West Sussex residents of all ages can reduce, reuse and recycle – and they are looking for new recruits. The scheme has been running for seven years, supporting the waste team at the County Council to increase recycling and reduce waste by using a community based approach. They are looking for people who can offer volunteer support within their local communities, at planned events, fronting presentations, or talking to schools and inspiring community groups. All training required for the volunteering role will be provided, covering everything you need to know about waste prevention through an e-learning programme, designed and monitored by the University of Brighton.

Making sure everyone is fit and healthy at work is great for both the employees, and the employers The Mid Sussex Wellbeing team supports local businesses providing information, support and advice about keeping their employees well. More and more organisations are now realising the importance of keeping their workforce healthy and feeling well. A happy, healthy and motivated workforce can bring less illness and absence, greater motivation and increased productivity. The Wellbeing team organises free NHS Health Checks for employees aged between 40-74 years (subject to eligibility). The check, which takes place within the workplace lasts between 20 – 30 minutes and everyone who takes part will receive a blood pressure check, a cholesterol measurement and will have their BMI (Body Mass Index) calculated by measuring height and weight. The health check can help to spot future health problems early, helping to prevent serious issues like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. For employees under 40 years old or not eligible for a health check, a free Wellbeing MOT can be carried out by a Wellbeing advisor. The Wellbeing MOT will give people the opportunity to use body composition scales which show your weight, BMI, body fat, muscle mass, hydration levels and metabolic age. You will also be able to talk to the Wellbeing advisor about how active you are, how much you drink and stopping smoking. As a result of the health checks and Wellbeing MOTs the Wellbeing team can set up specific support groups to help employees achieve their goals. The team can provide weight loss and exercise programmes, stop smoking groups, alcohol advice, and breathing and relaxation workshops. All of these programmes can be provided within

the workplace if there are enough members of staff interested and the business is supportive. Alternatively the employees can attend groups in community settings across Mid Sussex. The Wellbeing team recently organised health checks at RAPP in East Grinstead. Karen Cowell from RAPP reports, “The representatives who ran the checks were very professional; the checks were in-depth and informative with many compliments about how they were run and what they involved. We would recommend this service to all businesses as it helps identify who is at risk within the workforce and helps them to take action. With our last word of this year we can hardly believe December is here and 2014 is nearly at it’s end, how quickly this past year has flown! What with Mum’s illness and so much change in the office it has certainly been eventful and kept us on our toes. We wonder what 2015 will bring! As we go to print Sara will be married and hopefully having a fabulous honeymoon in the Outer Hebrides. The entire office wishes Sara and Robin every happiness and a wonderful future together. And as if that was not enough, they have just moved house as well! What a busy month they have had, and we expect Sara will come back to work for a rest! Banksy is still a charging around, and sometimes being a little terror. However, we are sure he will grow out of climbing up legs, sinking his teeth into your flesh and inviting himself round to the neighbours where he gives his claws a good work out on their furniture! Give him a prawn on the other hand, and he is as loving as can be. There are so many Christmas events around the villages and towns in December, we hope you can take advantage off them and enjoy some festive days out. The local shops are bursting with lovely gifts for those special Christmas treats. After your Christmas lunch this year, why not test your musical knowledge with our ‘Merry Musical Christmas Quiz’, kindly provided by Roger Linn.
