Editor’s COMMENT
At the time of writing, it seems that winter has fi nally arrived – time to snuggle up with Sussex Living Magazine. But of course by the time you read this who knows what the weather will be doing! Are you planning on tying the knot this year? If so we have a beautiful wedding feature just for you, starting on page 21. We also have a fantastic competition on page 28, where you could WIN A WEDDING! Defi nitely not to be missed. Bring a splash of colour and warmth into your life this year and recreate Morocco in your home and garden. Lisa de Silva gives us her top tips on how to live Moroccan from page 49. Starting next month in our March issue, we have a new property section in the magazine. With a topical article every month this is the perfect platform for your property advertising. If you would like to advertise is this section then don’t delay, call today! Our main feature this month is one man’s labour of love as he restores a classic Austin Twelve. Ruth Lawrence went to visit the man himself, Peter Bourne, and swooned over his collection of classics. Pages 37 to 43 have the story. We also pay tribute to a truly wonderful man, Roger Linn, on pages 44 and 45. For many years he wrote for us and his hilarious View from the Downs column will be missed by many, as well as all the other articles he penned. Roger was also our friend and a simply lovely guy, and will be missed by all of us at Sussex Living. Thank you so much for all your continued support – we love keeping our readers entertained and our advertisers busy! And thanks also to Brenda Mathews for her Valentines handkerchief picture (above) – how lovely!

President Christine Coxshaw has been a member of the Burgess Hill District Lions Club for 17 years, and is now President of the club. Sasha Kanal discovers how her first 6 months have been What do sensory rooms, lawnmowers and defibrillators have in common? One answer is that they, along with numerous other projects, were all funded by the Burgess Hill District Lions Club – part of an international charitable service organisation run by volunteers and funded by public donations. In Burgess Hill that means 38 dedicated members playing an important role in local community projects that rarely feature on the radar screen of the council or single cause charities. “I’m so proud of what we do,” says Christine Coxshaw, only the second ever female president to take the helm at the club. “It’s hard work but fulfilling and fun. We’re always looking for new
Formerly a relatively male-dominated club, the Burgess Hill District Lions Club now boasts a 50/50 male to female ratio members who are like minded, to give up some of their free time to help vulnerable people or those who need a bit of support.” A former administrator at Coutts Bank in London and a member of the Lions for 17 years, it was only when Christine retired last year that she felt she could fully commit to the role of President. “I take my position very seriously, it’s a full-time job and a challenge I have relished. My husband is also a member of the Lions and has been for 25 years, so we make a good team!” she laughs. Formerly a relatively male-dominated club, the Burgess Hill District Lions Club now boasts a 50/50 male to female ratio. In the past year alone the Burgess Hill District Lions Club provided a special mobility vehicle for a severely disabled young man, delivered over two hundred food parcels over Christmas, bought iPads

for children with special needs and have previously funded sensory rooms for children with severe learning difficulties, laid carpets and mowed lawns. As Christine points out, “It’s these little things that mean a lot to many people. I think without the Lions offering this, many local people would miss out on this kind of help.” Part of The International Association of Lions Clubs, the foundation has 1.3 million members worldwide in 200 countries and is the world’s largest and most active Service Club organisation. Lions clubs look to provide help in their local communities in the first instance, as well as responding to international humanitarian disasters, such as earthquakes and floods. Their fundraising activities range from speciality food nights in local restaurants to their famous Book Den in Church Walk, Burgess Hill. Donations are the lifeblood of the Lions. “We have a very rigorous and well governed process for allocating our precious donations. They are handled by our Welfare Committee, who give careful and confidential consideration to the many requests we receive,” says Christine. And what of the defibrillator? After this vital local resource in Burgess Hill was not only vandalised but stolen, the Lions supported by the general public, shopkeepers and local businesses stepped in and bought a replacement. It is now back in Church Walk, next to the theatre, being one of many funded by the Club around the district.

SUSSEX SPECIAL
BY LES CAMPBELL
Unique to the Sussex region, Tapsel Gates are pleasingly simple and effective in their design and well worth noting when you are out in the Sussex country One of my recent walks for this magazine went past the tiny church of Botolphs in the Adur Valley, close to Bramber and Upper Beeding. I mentioned the Tapsel Gate at this church and consequently, have furthered my knowledge on these gates, which are unique to Sussex. The Tapsel Gate is a wooden gate with a central pivot. It rotates in either direction through 90 degrees and comes to a stop at two fi xed points, and can be opened without difficulty. They were invented in the 18th century, probably by John Tapsel who lived at Mountfield near Battle in East Sussex. There are only a few of these special gates left in the entire county, and as far as I can establish, none have been found outside of Sussex. They are comparatively easy to open, and can be operated in either direction, thus making them easier to use than standard gates. Because of the way they open, Tapsel Gates are convenient for the easy passage of coffi ns to and from the church during burials, and they have the added advantage of preventing straying cattle from entering churchyards. Tapsel Gates of varying ages may be found at churches in both East and West Sussex. An example of an original gate that has not received any restoration exists at Coombes Church (middle picture) in the farming hamlet of Coombes, which is located further down the Adur Valley towards Shorehamby-Sea. The Tapsel Gate at Botolphs is a modern provision, and was only installed in 2003 (top). Likewise, the gate at Pyecombe Church (bottom) is a replica of the original, and on the top is the curved end of a Pyecombe crook, a type of a shepherd’s crook typically used by the downland shepherds. These crooks were cast in a forge opposite the church. In East Sussex, there are old and new gates at Kingston near Lewes, and at East Dean and Friston near Eastbourne. In fact, the fi rst recorded

Special
Tapsel Gate in Sussex is for the Church of St Pancras at Kingston near Lewes. This was noted in the accounts for 1729, and the church paid for the installation of the gate. Both Botolphs and Coombes churches are ideally placed for walks along the banks of the River Adur, and the southern extension of the Downs Link bridleway to Shoreham-by-Sea passes close to Botolphs. There is also a 4 mile walk from Bramber that featured in the March 2015 edition of this magazine. From Coombes, there are excellent walks up on to the South Downs as well as a riverside walk. I can particularly recommend the walk over Coombe Head to Lancing Ring. Pyecombe Church is on the South Downs Way and within easy walking distance of Jack and Jill Windmills and Wolstonbury Hill. So next time you are out in the Sussex countryside, keep an eye open for these unique gates with a very local history.

ENVIRONMENT
BY RUTH LAWRENCE
In the blink of an eye Ruth Lawrence witnessed nature at its most primal, with the sparrowhawk’s razor sharp talons, large mantling wings and piercing yellow eye
A Close
Call
Driving along the busy main road from Hassocks to Burgess Hill recently, heavy rain in the afternoon sun had conjured a double rainbow arcing a perfect semicircle across the steel grey sky. Peering between the windscreen wipers in a line of traffic, I nearly missed a drama unfolding right in front of me; a female sparrowhawk, talons forward, seized a pigeon head height above the centre of the road and brought it down in a fluster of wings. As I passed predator and prey, her head turned towards me and I was able to see her large yellow eye as she held her wings over the pigeon’s body, mantling to protect her catch. With a car close behind, I couldn’t stop but I glanced in the rear view mirror to see her startled by passing cars and as her grip released, the pigeon flew free and the pair separated above oncoming traffic. Although rare to see an attempted kill at such close quarters, for the sparrowhawk, failure to catch prey is the norm rather than the exception. The female is 25% larger
than her mate and she is capable of bringing down much larger quarry than the male. He will attack small birds such as sparrows, fi nches or small mammals but she can tackle the weightier pigeon, which, if caught, can sustain her for two or three days. Sometimes, the tables are turned; a sparrowhawk made news several summers ago after being killed by one of the peregrines that nest on Chichester Cathedral who fed the bird to its four hungry chicks. The sparrowhawk population crashed in the 1950s and 60s due to the widespread use of DDT pesticide; it thinned the bird’s egg shell so much that the weight of an incubating female would crush it in the nest. A later ban on the chemical allowed their numbers to recover and that distinctive soaring fl ight between several wingbeats is once again part of the landscape. Unlike a kestrel, the sparrowhawk does not hunt by hovering but by stealth and persistent chase. It watches from a perch among cover then fl ies low and fast so it can seize the prey by surprise. If it misses, it will continue pursuit, even among undergrowth and trees. The male, when having to feed his mate and the chicks during the breeding season may have to make ten kills a day to sustain his family. Over a year, a breeding pair could consume the equivalent weight of over a hundred pigeons. As I watched the sparrowhawk and the lucky pigeon part ways in my rear view mirror, I was left with the memory of those bright eyes, turned towards me in one improbable, unforgettable moment.
The female is 25% larger than her mate and she is capable of bringing down much larger quarry than the male

Cambodia Challenge Gear up for the challenge of a lifetime with Chestnut Tree House. Join our exclusive team of Chestnut’s Cambodia Challengers as you journey through the heart of old Indochina, exploring dazzling rice paddies and jungles dotted with ruins and temples to our spectacular finish at the renowned and impressive temple of Angkor Wat. Our Cambodia Challengers have a great challenge ahead; not only trekking 85km, but raising enough money to pay for all 24-hour care services, both at the hospice and in family’s own homes, for the entire duration of the trip. Chestnut Tree House is the children’s hospice for Sussex. Each year, we look after hundreds of local children with life-shortening conditions, their siblings and families, giving them the chance to live life to the full – for as much time as they have together. The hospice costs over £3.5 million per year to run. Families are never charged for their care and less than 7p in every pound is funded by central government, so we rely heavily on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex. Ditchling Film Society We have two films in February. The first on Thursday 4th February is ‘Still Alice’ based on Lisa Genova’s 2007 best-selling novel. And the second film to be shown on Thursday 18th February will be ‘Tangerines’ which is a touching anti-war story about Estonians in the middle of someone else’s war. Set in the 1992 war in Georgia, local Apkhazians are fighting to break free from Georgia. In an Estonian village, only two men have stayed behind – Ivo and

Margus. However, the latter will leave once he has harvested his crop of tangerines. In a bloody conflict in their village, wounded men are left behind and Ivo takes them in – but they are from opposite sides of the war. It is a poetic film which makes an eloquent statement for peace. Director: Zaza Urushadze. Estonian 2013, 87 mins, NR The films will be shown in Ditchling Village Hall. Our films start at 8.00pm, doors open at 7.30pm. Free coffee and biscuits beforehand and wine can be purchased by the glass. Ample free parking behind the hall. Guests and temporary members are welcome for the sum of £5.00 payable at the door.
Gilbert & Sullivan The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Sussex (formerly the Mid Sussex Gilbert & Sullivan Society) has been in existence for five years, and in that time has become an established part of the local music scene. It was founded by Melvyn Tarran, whose amazing collection of G & S memorabilia at Sheffield Park was the largest on permanent display in the world. Visitors used to emerge from the exhibition enthused by all they had seen, and wanting to know if there was a society they could join. At that time there was nothing, so Melvyn conceived the idea of starting one, which was launched at Haywards Heath Town Hall in May 2011. Early concerts took place at the Town Hall or the Redwood Centre before moving to the Birch Hotel, which is still the main venue. The concerts are chiefly all-professional, featuring many top G & S and ex-D’Oyly Carte singers, but the society’s own performing members also stage an entertainment once a year, usually at Christmas, and these are always very popular. In addition to concerts, G &
S Today (as the society is also known) hosts an annual Celebrity Luncheon, at which such G & S luminaries as David Turner, David Steadman, Michael Simkin and Richard Suart are principal guests. Coach outings are also enjoyed, to places or shows of G & S interest. Anyone interested in finding out more about this flourishing group should visit the website, gilbertandsullivantoday.org.uk, or ring Bill Colbourne on 01444 456227.
Haywards Heath Music Society After its mid-winter break, Haywards Heath Music Society continues its 74th season of professional chamber music concerts at 7.45pm on Saturday 20th February at Haywards Heath Methodist Church. The performers on this occasion are the local cello virtuosi Pavlos Carvalho and Sarah CarvalhoDubost, accompanied by pianist Elena Nalimova. This will be an evening of Romantic music for cello and piano, including a rare opportunity to hear the dazzling Trio for Two Cellos and Piano by Jérôme Ducros, as well as other more familiar pieces. For the rest of the season, the venue reverts to St Wilfrid’s Church, where on 19th March the award-winning local concert pianist Caroline Tyler will give an eagerly-anticipated recital.
For the final concert on 16th April, the Society welcomes a group of highly-talented brass players, the Prince Bishops Brass Ensemble, who will conclude the season with an evening of varied and entertaining music entitled From Bach to Boogie. The concerts are open to non-members, and tickets, priced at £12 adults, £11 seniors and £3 students (with reductions for members) are available from Carousel Music or on the door. To encourage parents to bring their family along, up to two adults accompanied by an under-18 will be admitted for half price. For further information, telephone the Secretary on 01444-456227, or visit www. haywardsheathmusicsociety .org.uk

of Support Groups hold an array of events to help raise money for St Peter & St James Hospice in their local communities. The groups are fantastic ambassadors in the community and raise an amazing £55,000 every year for the hospice which is invaluable to help us provide the care to local people in those communities. Glenda Blackaller, Chair of the Newick and Chailey Support Group, explained “We get a huge satisfaction raising money for the hospice, it is very rewarding knowing that we can make a real difference to the work they do. It’s also great fun coming up with new ideas.” The groups also help with our successful key hospice events. In 2016, we’d like to expand our Support Groups – can you spare your time and skills to help us? We are particularly looking for new members in Haywards Heath, Hurstpierpoint, Lindfield and Burgess Hill. The groups are informal,
fun and a great way to really make a valuable difference to the local people – all you need is enthusiasm and ideas! We will be holding two ‘Find Out More’ evenings on Thursday 11th February, 6:00pm at The Potters pub in Burgess Hill, and Thursday 25th February, 6:00pm at The Sergison Arms in Haywards Heath where you can come along and chat to us about getting involved in a Support Group. Volunteers Needed! Every March, thousands of people take to the streets to collect donations for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal. Marie Curie is calling for more volunteers to help them in 2016 by signing up to collect at one of the 100 collections across Sussex. Most shifts are for 2 hours and it’s a great thing to do with a friend or family member as most places allow two people to collect at a time, dogs are also welcome! The money raised will go to Marie Curie’s Nursing Service, providing hands on care and emotional support to people with any terminal illness in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. Marie Curie provides this care free of charge, allowing people to spend their final days at home surrounded by the people and things they love the most. It comes at a cost of £20 per hour to the charity. Diabetes courses Diabetes is a condition where the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood is too high. If untreated diabetes can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, eye and kidney damage. You are more at risk of diabetes if you are overweight, unfit or have a history of diabetes in your family. If you have been diagnosed by a doctor with ‘impaired glucose tolerance’ you may be referred to as ‘prediabetic’ and have a high risk of developing it. You can reduce your chances developing Type 2 diabetes simply through losing even just a moderate amount of weight, adopting a healthy, balanced diet and increasing physical activity levels. The wellbeing team has worked with local GPs to develop a programme for people who are at risk. From September 2015 the Wellbeing Team has been running regular free half-day courses at GP surgeries where people will be able to talk what it means to be pre-diabetic and to understand what they can do to reduce the risk of developing diabetes. After the course participants will be offered support through the wellbeing team to take the first steps towards a healthier lifestyle. “I cannot recommend Vets2Home enough. I knew my best friend, my gorgeous Tabby cat Ruggy, wasn't long for this world due to rapidly deteriorating ill health and old age, and I wanted to say goodbye to him, and do the best for him with peace and dignity. He was my best friend and my life companion, and I didn't want to cause him further distress and indignity by taking him out to the vets. I also wanted our goodbye to be special. I called Vets2Home and spoke to Alex, who was very calming during my distress, knowing that I was about to lose my best friend and it was arranged that Susan would come the next day to help send my dear friend to Kitty Heaven, in the comfort of his own home. I immediately felt at ease with Susan and so did my cat, it was all done peacefully with sedation, and with me cuddling my dear friend until the very end. It was very relaxed, unrushed, dignified and peaceful. It really was the very best goodbye that I could possibly give my best friend, and I would recommend Vet2Home to anyone who wants to give their best friend the very best at the end. Thank you so much Susan and Alex xx

For matters of family law you know you can trust Tisshaws Family Law Solicitors in Haywards Heath with their excellent reputation and Lexcel reaccreditation A wonderful combination of experience, expertise and empathy awaits you at Tisshaws Family Law Solicitors, who are proud to announce the firm has successfully renewed its Lexcel accreditation, the gold standard quality mark held by just 8% of law firms. Based in Haywards Heath, Tisshaws has always placed great emphasis on treating clients with compassion and

understanding, particularly in matters of family law. “It’s important to us that alongside offering high quality legal work and advice, that we always work in a caring, friendly and approachable way,” explains director, Gilva Tisshaw. “We treat clients as individuals, really listening to their needs so we can do our best for them.” This philosophy is reflected throughout the team and Tisshaws are delighted to announce the appointment of family solicitor, Craig Yeung-Williams. Craig was initially attracted to work in family law by a desire to help people. “You are often dealing with someone confronting some of the most difficult moments of their life. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to offer them practical legal advice that can help to resolve their issues.” Having trained and worked in London, Craig’s experience

will be a valuable asset to the firm. “To be honest, Gilva was the main reason I was keen to join Tisshaws. She has a fantastic reputation and is very experienced. I knew that I would enjoy working with her and that she was someone I could learn from,” he explains. Craig will work alongside both Gilva and Lidia Farrell, who has recently qualified as a Chartered Legal Executive, making Tisshaws the largest and longest established family law specialists in the area.
Why Consult a Family Law Solicitor at Tisshaws?
Tisshaws fully appreciate how difficult and intimidating the process of consulting a solicitor can be, particularly when it comes to issues of separation and divorce, but it is vital that people get the right information at such a critical time in their lives. The emotional and fi nancial costs of separation and divorce cannot be underestimated and decisions made at the beginning of the process can have a huge impact on the outcome. Therefore it is important to base decisions on the best information available, which Tisshaws provide. Added to this, the breadth of range and experience at Tisshaws has many benefits; not only is someone always available to take calls and deal with queries, covering for colleagues away from the office, but it also allows Tisshaws to offer a range of competitive rates commensurate with different levels of legal experience.
For Matters of Divorce
Divorce can be one of the most stressful of life’s experiences but Tisshaws aims to make the process as smooth as possible for both parties. The importance of taking legal advice when divorcing cannot be underestimated and the fi rm has seen many lose out as a result of ‘internet divorces’. Many people do not realise that without a fi nancial agreement in place, either party is able to come back at a future date to make a claim. The company offers a Fixed Fee Divorce for £950, inclusive of VAT, where the divorce is uncontested. This fee includes the preparation of the Divorce Petition, the supporting documentation for the Court and dealing with each step of the divorce procedure. In many cases, the fee will be shared, or paid for in full by the other party. Family and fi nancial legal advice is charged separately on an hourly rate. Tisshaws have a particularly strong reputation when it comes to resolving the fi nancial aspects of divorce and their wealth of experience means that nothing is overlooked when considering the fi nancial settlement, including present and future housing needs, income requirements and pensions. Once both parties have agreed terms and conditions, a Consent Order can be drawn up, clearly setting out the agreement reached. The care of children in cases of divorce is of paramount importance, which is why Tisshaw’s specialist advice is so invaluable.
Tisshaws offers a Fixed Fee Divorce for £950, inclusive of VAT, where the divorce is uncontested
What Tisshaws Can Offer
For those needing help and advice, Tisshaws offer an initial fi xed fee one hour appointment with a fully qualified member of the family team for £50, inclusive of VAT. “The one hour consultation acts not only as an introductory meeting,” explains Gilva, “but also gives us enough time to fully understand a client’s needs and most importantly, gives us the opportunity to arm them with all the information required for their specific circumstances.” As Tisshaws fully appreciate that it is important for people to fi nd a solicitor they trust and feel comfortable with, they do not want anyone to feel they have to appoint the fi rm after this introductory meeting. Having said that, the reality is that the fi rm’s caring attitude and professionalism means that most people choose to stay with Tisshaws. The company keep fees and charges highly competitive and recognising that the fi nancial aspects of separation and divorce can often be difficult for people, there is a facility to pay in instalments through a payment programme.
Tisshaws prides itself on the quality of both the emotional and legal support offered to clients. As one of many satisfied clients says, “I would like to thank you for all your help in dealing with the Divorce which was very difficult and for making the legal process less stressful than it could have been.” If you, your family or friends need a family solicitor, please do not hesitate to contact Tisshaws.

The
Veiled
Bride
Wish you were a fairy-tale princess? Make your dreams come true on your wedding day with an elegant veil or glamorous sparkling tiara – making you the perfect blushing bride Next to the wedding gown, the most associated item with the bride is probably the veil. Though today the wearing of veils and headpieces is determined more by personal choice than tradition, many brides opt to incorporate these pieces into their wedding ensemble. Veils and tiaras now come in all shapes and sizes, but their origins are steeped in history and tradition. Even in Ancient Roman times, brides wore a flame coloured veil, called a ‘flammeum’, which was believed to protect the bride from evil spirits on her wedding day. Before the 19th century, brides used to wear their hair cascading down their backs at their wedding ceremony to symbolise their virginity; later on veils that covered their hair and face became a symbol of this purity. Traditionally continued on page 22

the bride would wear the veil throughout the ceremony, only to be lifted after the marriage was complete by her father or by the groom. This tradition carries on today in some cultures, but in modern weddings the face veil may not be used at all. Those of you who want informal weddings might choose not to wear a veil, but the majority of brides still love to don a headpiece of some sort. Luckily there is an abundance of veil styles to choose from when planning your wedding. Veils come in many different lengths, so make sure to have your dress picked out fi rst. To make certain that your chosen veil is the right one, try on the veil and the dress at the same time. If you don’t have a specific veil in mind as of yet, but want to take into account the current trends, take a look at some of these styles: ✦ Beautiful lace veils with applique edges never go out of style, these can be found in both chapellength and in shorter versions too.
Traditionally the bride would wear the veil throughout the ceremony, only to be lifted after the marriage was complete by her father or by the groom

Tiaras, barrettes, fresh flowers and glittering hairpins are some of today’s more modern options ✦ The Mantilla veil has a gorgeous ‘old-world’ feel about it: edged with lace and draped delicately over the bride’s head, it’s perfect for a formal wedding. ✦ The shoulder-length vintage blusher veil looks perfect with a tea-length dress if you’re opting for a less formal event. ✦ For a unique and elegant look, try a bridal cap or a veiled hat: these modern bridal accessories can be paired with almost any style of dress. ✦ Birdcage veils have just the right amount of vintage glamour, and can even be found in a gold colour, to add a bit of sparkle. ✦ Coloured veils are for the most modern of brides. Try a beautiful gold or a blush coloured one to add a bit of sass to your special day. If you’re not sold on the veil there are many other beautiful options to consider: tiaras, barrettes, fresh flowers and glittering hairpins are some of today’s more modern options to wear instead. And even if you are going to wear a veil, you may be considering wearing a tiara or headpiece as well. These wedding pieces also have a historical tale behind them. During the Crusades, brides wore orange blossom wreaths on top of their veils, leading some to believe this is where wedding tiaras originate. Traditionally, in later years, the fi rst
time a tiara was worn was on the bride’s wedding day. This was usually her family’s tiara and from that day onwards she was expected to wear only jewellery given to her by her husband, symbolising her moving from one family to another. Today these items may not have such traditional connotations and are worn to achieve a desired look. The current fashion is to wear the tiara quite far back, running in line from just behind the ears at an angle of about 45 degrees when looked at from the side. So if you have decided to wear a tiara and a veil, fi rst decide where you want to wear your veil, then adjust the tiara accordingly, for the right look and comfort. So whether you are keeping with tradition and going for a floor-length gown with a chapel-length veil or are opting for a tea-length dress with a fresh flower crown, á la the Crusaders, there is so much to choose from – the good thing is, these days it’s up to you!

Hurstpierpoint has seen its fair share of weddings, with listings reaching back to 1559. If you are adding your story to the records, we wish you the best of luck!
An age of In Hurstpierpoint it is thought that there has been a church on the same site since Norman Times, being fi rst recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Whether it was built before or after William the Conqueror’s arrival remains unknown. At the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester, the Hurstpierpoint parish records commence in 1558, although weddings would have taken place before then. The honour of being the fi rst bride and groom in the ledger fell to James Byrtte and Margaret Sprid on the 29th April in 1559. Elizabeth I had been crowned that same January and England lived under the last Tudor. Fifty-seven years later on the 1st February 1616 when William Porter married Mary Neave the records still list the barest of information. A century later on the 28th October in 1716 when the Hanoverian George I was on the throne, it was the turn of John Packham and Susanna Vinal to
weddings tie the knot. Again, only the names are recorded, nothing more. All these weddings would have taken place in the original St. Lawrence Church, although it had been altered several times from its original incarnation. The font from around 1200 still survives to this day. When William Humphrey married Elizabeth Smith on 18th February 1816, record keeping had improved. Both William and Elizabeth were “previously single” with William Randell and Mary Humphrey witnessing the nuptials. Mary would be in church again on the 23rd October 1818 when she married John Marchant. Luke Humphrey and Hannah Humphrey would witness this wedding. The busy Mrs Marchant would return the following year on the 15th November to witness the wedding of James Marchant and Jane King. These would be some of the last weddings in the original St. Lawrence Church because the Victorians planned something a little grander for the site. The Gothic Holy Trinity church was built between 1843-45 from a design by Sir Charles Barry, the man who

also designed Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital, Trafalgar Square and the Houses of Parliament. A century ago, with the horrors of WWI as a backdrop, it was the turn of William Charles David Saunders and Alice Amy Jenner to wed on February 21st 1916. On the day, Rector Charles Piggott, oversaw proceedings. William was 19, a bachelor and farm labourer from Hurstpierpoint. His father was David Saunders whose occupation was listed as married. Alice was also 19, from Hurstpierpoint and listed as a spinster. William Wallis Jenner, her father, was a farm labourer and her mother was Mabel Jenner. It was a wedding that lasted long after WWI and WWII; William and Alice were living in nearby Cuckfield as recently as 1960, presumably happily so. Thank you to those who have appeared here, and please do get in touch if you know who they are.

Expert care
for your wedding dress Sarah Lacey believes that every wedding dress is unique. That’s why her personalised laundry and boxing service is increasingly popular with brides It’s a cold winter’s day in Haywards Heath, but behind the steamedup windows of Sarah Lacey Dry Cleaning, a series of everyday miracles is taking place. Exquisite wedding dresses hang from every rack, glittering behind their covers. Sarah’s job – with the help of her colleague Deborah Gracey – is to remove the stains and creases acquired on the Big Day, carefully packing each dress into a personalised vintage-style storage box and returning the precious package to its owner. “Each dress needs different treatment,” Sarah explains. “When the customer comes in, they’ll talk to either me or Deborah and go over every inch of the dress. We’ll find out if there are any repairs to be made, whether there are stains that need extra special attention and whether the material can withstand cleaning. With us, you can be sure that the person you talk to will also be the one to clean your dress.” Laundering runs in Sarah’s blood. Her great-greatgrandmother started a laundry service in Haywards Heath during the 1880s, and the family business has been operating in Sussex ever since. Both Sarah and Deborah have a passion for what they do, and they love talking the wedding dresses over with their owners, hearing stories from the Big Day and helping to preserve those special memories. Downstairs, in the busy, steamy basement below the shop, a series of industrial machines deliver the kind of crisp and perfect finish that it’s simply impossible to get at home. Sarah and Deborah can advise on the cleaning of any dress. “We frequently clean bespoke designer gowns from boutiques such as Mathilda Rose
Every dress that comes in is treated as an individual, and that’s what makes us different in Lindfield, as well as haute couture,” Sarah explains. “We’ve cleaned a Vera Wang dress with 30 layers of net, and we’ve seen dresses covered in mud and all sorts! Some take days to clean. Every dress that comes in is treated as an individual, and that’s what makes us different.” Sarah also offers a personalised boxing service, which allows customers to choose their own pattern from a gorgeous range of Empty Box Company boxes – the same models seen in period TV dramas Mr Selfridge and Downton Abbey. Both the boxes and the tissue paper are acid-free to protect
the dresses during storage. Boxing is the final step in a process that Sarah ensures is kept personal throughout. “We always have respect for the dresses, because each one is incredibly important,” she explains. “It’s not just a wedding dress; it’s all the memories and emotions that are tied up in the dress. We feel that we have to take great care of them.”

The fifth Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend has been confirmed for the May Bank Holiday weekend of 2016, presenting a great opportunity for a New Year challenge! Whether you are taking up running, starting a new health and fitness regime, seeking to raise money for a cause close to your heart or are a seasoned runner looking for a different challenge, Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend offers something for everyone. Participants will once again be traversing the Mid Sussex countryside over all three days of the May Bank Holiday weekend. We are delighted the 2016 races will be hosted again at the 2015 venues, so the superb facilities of East Grinstead Rugby Club will be the venue for a 10-mile cross-country race on Saturday 30th April. Phil Major said, “East Grinstead Rugby Club is a community orientated club so when the event was seeking a new venue last year we were only too pleased to help.” Sunday 1st May sees the event move to Victoria Park, Haywards Heath for a 10-mile race, a course covering footpaths and roads, which will be a part of the Sussex Grand Prix calendar. The event fi nishes in Burgess Hill on Monday 2nd May, over a 10-kilometre course that will consist of roads and the Batchelor Farm fields. Following the success of 2015 the fi nal leg will return to Oakmeeds Community College and Woodlands Meed School. The event has consistently attracted over 1,000 participants each year and the event organisers are hoping to make it bigger and better in 2016. Event Director Simon Adby said, “Participants can enter one, two or all three

of the main races and prizes will be awarded to the top fi nishers in each race. Additionally we will also be staging the Mid Sussex Mile races before each of the main races. These races present an opportunity for juniors and adults to be part of the weekend event over the shorter 1-mile distance, set within the boundaries of our host venues.” Volunteer support will be required each day to assist with marshalling of the routes. Councillor Pru Moore said: “Volunteers are the foundation of all community events, especially the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend. We are extremely grateful to the willing volunteers who are prepared to give us half a day of their time.” Alongside volunteers, event organisers are also seeking local business partners who are interested in becoming event sponsors or providing race prizes. Simon Adby said: “This is a great opportunity for local businesses to become involved in a community event. All support will not

Slick as
oil
Keep your skin, hair and nails looking luscious through the cold weather with this one luxurious product: oil February is usually one of the dreariest months around – the wind, rain, cold and reduced sunlight all contribute to dull hair, dry skin and brittle nails. Luckily combating these pesky symptoms doesn’t have to be time consuming and laborious – if you find the right treatment product for you! Oils are great to use in the cold winter months and come in a huge variety. They are no longer just for facial care; your lips, body, hair and cuticles can also all be indulged by these rich products. Don’t be put off if you have naturally oily skin as different oils can be used on all skin types and their deep moisturising and regenerative qualities are widely recognised. Read on to find out more about their various uses. Oil cleansers are an effective and easy way to remove make-up and clean away daily dirt without stripping your skin of the natural moisture it needs to maintain its elasticity. Pure coconut oil works miracles – while solid at room temperature, it only needs
a bit of warming to become liquid. Massage a small amount of warmed, liquefied coconut oil straight onto your skin and use a damp cotton pad to gently wipe it off – even the most waterproof mascara doesn’t stand a chance! A fun fact: coconut oil is also a great alternative to lip balm. Argan oil is another miracle worker; it is used to repair dry and damaged skin, hair and cuticles. Your skin and hair absorbs this oil very efficiently and it reacts well with the natural moisture of the skin. If you’re suffering from ‘winter feet’ (in other words cracked heels), apply plenty of argan oil to your feet before bed, slip on some thick socks and in the morning your feet will be rejuvenated and baby-soft. For aging skin and fending off wrinkles, repairing oxidative damage and replenishing low moisture in the skin tissue, oils such as almond, evening primrose and jojoba seed add an extra anti-aging boost to your regular routine. Try treating stretch marks and scars with rosehip, baobab and mandarin oils and irritated and red skin with soothing camelina oil. As a treat, and for

luscious soft, clean skin, why not take a relaxing bath infused with camomile, frankincense, palmarosa and bergamot oils? If you’ve been after soft and manageable hair, try using an argan and almond oil blend. Disperse a pea-sized amount on your palms and apply to the ends of your hair for hydrated and split end free hair. Tea tree oil is great for invigorating roots and for fighting dry skin and dandruff.
Oil cleansers are an effective way to remove makeup without stripping your skin of its natural moisture The beautifying properties of oils have been known for thousands of years and if you’ve been looking for healthier, nourished skin without all those added chemicals, why not consider including some of these oil-based therapies in your daily routine? Please be sensible when using new products, especially with medical conditions and pregnancy; if any irritation occurs stop using and consult your pharmacist or doctor. www.sussexliving.com

For the ultimate cover-up look no further than the over-the-knee boot; move over 1960s PVC, hello 2016 suede
It’s finally cold enough to wear the most outrageous boots you can think of! Overthe-knees are back in trend and are an instant lookchanger. Don’t think Dick Whittington, but imagine the 1960s instead. It was then that the over-the-knee boot first appeared as a fashion item for women – kick-started by the big fashion houses who began featuring these boots in their autumn collections. On the high street, the boots, typically the black shiny PVC variety, were paired with short skirts and were a very popular trend with young women. Today these boots are more likely to be found in suede rather than PVC, and not just the stiletto version worn by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman either. Now they come in all shapes and styles – from
chunky motorcycle designs to wedges. Add them to whatever you’re wearing; their versatility is ground breaking! They also remedy this season’s trend for ankle grazer trousers, which can be awkward in the cold. No more worrying about socks showing or cold ankles in shorter boots! Also, paired with a skirt or dress, over-the-knee boots provide an excellent way to stay covered and warmer than you would be in tights alone. For a smart casual look, why not wear some leggings with a feminine jacket and nice top – with over-the-knee boots of course. You will soon be wondering why you haven’t been wearing them all along.

Sunflower
Tributes
Celebrate someone special by creating a Sunflower Tributes page on St Peter & St James Hospice website, where you can leave messages and pictures, light virtual candles and remember your loved one together Now in its 41st year, St Peter & St James Hospice provide support to families and individuals at the end of their life by giving them compassion, hope and care of the highest quality. The Hospice and Continuing Care Centre started with humble beginnings in 1975, and over the years has grown to become invaluable. The Centre is excellent, with private rooms, homely common areas for eating and socializing, specialist equipment and beautiful grounds where woodland walks can be enjoyed along with a visit to the resident donkeys. Bereavement and counselling services are also available, and to help family and friends celebrate a loved one’s life, a new resource has been set up – Sunflower Tributes. This is an online dedication page which you can set up through the St Peter & St James website (www.stpeter-stjames.org.uk). The easy to set up page provides a place where people can come together to share their memories, leave messages, thoughts and stories, post pictures and light virtual, flickering candles. Music and videos can even be added to the page, making it a really personal place to honour your loved one. The Tribute page also helps to raise vital funds for the Hospice. All donations made can be added to the same fund, making it easy to keep track of how much you have raised. Many families and friends are so grateful to the Hospice for the support they receive, and the quality

of life given to their loved one, that fundraising for them is the natural thing to do. Donations can also be made in lieu of flowers at the funeral, something the Hospice is very grateful for. Other notifications can also be put up on the Tribute page, such as funeral arrangements. Invitations with a map and directions can be sent out to people if you wish. If you want to make a page but are not sure how to do it, there are people who can help. Once you have had help setting up the page, it is handed back to the family so you are always in control. There is no cost, and the page can be public or private depending on what you want. More than anything a Sunflower Tributes page is a great way to keep in contact with family and friends at a challenging time of life. Each page is set up by name, so is really easy to find and to revisit again and again, seeing what new memories and messages have been added. Once the page is active, it will last forever in remembrance of your loved one. For further information please email tributes@ stpeter-stjames.org.uk or call 01444 470722 www.sussexliving.com

For both enthusiast and admirer, the mighty lion’s purr and swooping lines of many classic cars are a joy to behold, but for one man in particular restoring these metal beasts has become a life-long passion. Ruth Lawrence discovers the story of Peter Bourne’s collection
Master of
Restoration What a glorious thing it is to behold the grace and majesty of a classic car, especially one lovingly restored to its former glory. With classic car shows and rallies sparking a greater interest than ever before, dressing the part in vintage regalia and drinking in the racy atmosphere is something that all generations can relish. One man in particular who appreciates the beauty, down to earth mechanics and fine craftsmanship of the classic car is Peter Bourne. He has always enjoyed immersing himself in a project
and is never happier than when he is in greasy overalls under the bonnet of a car. Recently, he has finished a three-year restoration of a classic Austin Twelve that he bought in 1969 as little more than an abandoned shell. He discovered the 1923 Austin Twelve Clifton Tourer on a farm near Reading and realised it had a valuable single letter number plate, coincidentally his own initial, P. A little research revealed that the car had been used as a wartime tractor conversion; horses were continued on page 38

thin on the ground then and shortages meant that more tractors were required due to every available field being turned over to crop production. When he found it, the Austin hadn’t been treated well; left in a lean to, its instruments were broken and its body badly damaged. Photos reveal the extent of the neglect (above) but undaunted, Peter bought what remained of the car and over the next four decades, amassed the spare parts to begin its restoration. He had new wings made, rebuilt the body and doors, rebored the engine, replaced the chassis and clutch and restored the fittings, lamps and handles. He replaced the woodwork in the body and skilfully revamped the damaged instruments and interior. The whole project cost time, money and patience but the end result was a stunning classic that turns heads whenever he takes to the road. Finished in deep blue, the colour of an evening sky, the car is an absolute beauty. From the huge headlights and chunky chrome grille to the wide running boards and fold down top, it must be a delight to drive on a
warm summer evening. Driving was an immersive experience in the 1920s; the windscreen split to open in two halves horizontally as there were no wipers and the interior must have been chilly for driver and passengers. Those in the rear seat had the advantage of an innovative fold up rear windscreen with integral knee blanket – the entire contraption packs down under a neat chrome rail when not in use in front of the full-width black leather seat. With further beautiful detailing, the instrument panel would look as much

at home on a bi-plane; big dials spreading across the dashboard make the car feel more like a living, breathing creature than a mere machine. The Austin Twelve was introduced in 1921 and by the following year, three body styles were available. The car was hugely popular; annual sales peaked at 14,000 in 1927 and it continued in the Austin catalogue and as a taxi option until 1939, although the last cars were produced for the War Department in 1940. After the war, the Austin Twelve name was resumed in the manufacturer’s catalogue until it was replaced by the Austin 40 in 1947. An excerpt from a report on the Austin Twelve Harley all-weather tourer in 1924 revealed that “of the springing I have no complaint… and in addition to the horn button there is a large circular switch on the steering wheel so that warning can be given without having to take off a hand.” Peter’s model was the last with two wheel brakes, when in 1924 an improvement was announced at the Motor Show where the pedal applied four brakes to the wheels, making for more efficient stopping power. Although Peter reckons the Austin is thirsty, achieving just 15 miles to a gallon, the engine is generally considered to be exceptionally robust and the cars enjoy a good reputation with collectors who want to use their classic to drive and take to rallies and shows. Peter showed me an original handbook and parts catalogue for the Austin and a glance at the tools supplied with the car revealed how early drivers were expected to be their own mechanics. A tappet adjusting spanner and cylinder head gasket continued on page 40

were supplied in a tool roll along with a variety of specialised spanners, gauges and levers, not forgetting the all important starting handle to bring the car to life. A page titled ‘Monthly Attention’ details procedures that would strike terror into the heart of today’s motorist; one instructs the owner to “remove plug at back of rear axle and inject a gunful of grease and oil mixed half and half.” Back then, men would spend Sundays under the car bonnet, emerging at tea time covered in grease but secure in the knowledge that the family car would continue to run smoothly. The manual gives somewhat scary instruction on how to tackle steep descents before adding “keep the clutch in to counterbalance violent action, throwing out clutch at the last moment if stopping the car.” Pre-war driving was clearly not for the faint hearted. The manual states that “A good driver is never flurried, does not skid his tyres, uses clutch and brake as little as possible and has small bills for tyres, petrol and repairs.” A complex and somewhat baffling set of instructions for ‘double-declutching’ follows and

brings home the skill required for manoeuvring an early car around the largely traffic-free lanes of prewar England. The Austin is only one of the many classics that have gone through Peter’s hands; he fondly remembers a Model T Ford he bought from France in 1967 with which he completed sixteen London to Brighton runs after finishing an entire rebuild. An old photo shows him in the vehicle on Brighton seafront, in a line of beautiful classic commercials sometime in the seventies (below, fourth from bottom). The Ford was extremely thirsty – Peter managed to get only ten miles to the gallon and remembers an expensive drive from London to Devon on a rally. Named as the most influential car of the 20th century, the Ford Model T made the list of the top ten most sold cars of all time; it was rugged enough to be used as a tractor and could traverse rocks, streams and steep hills. A wheel could be removed to power a belt for a thresher or saw and they could be used as a generator in rural areas. Their engines were robust enough to use on home-built aircrafts or motorboats and in Canada, skis could even be fitted in place of the front wheels so they could be used in heavy snow. Although Peter sold the Model T three years ago, he kept hold of another of his favourite renovations, a 1958 Vanden Plas Princess DS7 IV, which he found rotting under a hedge at a friend’s house where it had stood for twelve years. Peter carried out an intensive complete body restoration and eventually used the car for friends’ weddings. The engine was developed from the Austin Healey 100S engine and only 200 of this model were built to challenge the more expensive S1 Bentley and Rolls; in 1958 a new model cost £3, 376. livery in pale grey and black accompanied by the last of the ‘razor edge’ wings and it looks every inch a perfect 50s classic. Photos of the car before and after restoration show how much work and attention went into the project; she now sits immaculately returned to her former glory and the engine ticks over at a low purr. An Austin Princess IV was road tested by Autocar in 1958 and the 150bhp engine returned a maximum speed of almost a hundred miles per hour. Vanden Plas originated in Belgium in 1870, making wheels for carriages and although most people associate the name with Austin Rover, in the past they were coach builders for Rolls Royce, Bentley, Alvis and Daimler. It is said that until 1939,
Gates • Automation • Security
no two bodies by Vanden Plas were identical. In 1913, Vanden Plas (England) Limited was formed, building bodies from Belgium and in 1946, Vanden Plas became a subsidiary of Austin Motors. Peter’s passion for cars blossomed when he began working at Caffyns Garage in Cuckfield in 1953. He started work in the paintwork and body shop after which he spent five years working on steam engines as a fireman until 1960. He remembers working 16 hour shifts for £12 a week and was relieved when he eventually took over a garage for himself in 1970. He ran Heath Garage in Haywards Heath for eighteen years and used to restore cars there; a photo (above left) shows an impressive line up of classic vehicles outside the garage in the seventies. Peter also worked for the inventor Rowland Emett, helping him build his whimsical sculptures. The two classics that Peter presently owns remain lovingly cherished usable cars that bear testament to their painstaking restoration. I sat inside the Austin with the roof down and couldn’t suppress a wide smile; a world away from the cramped interiors of most modern cars, the Austin promises fun and style in equal measure. A bus-sized steering wheel and a dashboard full of gorgeous early 20th century dials made me imagine travelling the empty, quieter roads of almost a hundred years ago. Thanks to enthusiasts like Peter, these fabulous cars are still on the road, loved and admired by successive generations. As I climbed reluctantly into my tiny Fiat, I held the memory of the generous design of yesteryear and promised myself to start saving for a timeless classic.

IN MEMORY
BY SARA WHATLEY
Roger Linn 1943–2015
It was with great sadness that we announced the passing of Roger Linn on the 15th December 2015 in our January issue. Here, we pay tribute to this wonderful man, who was a trusted colleague, a dear friend and a well-respected member of the community Roger Linn has kept the readers of Sussex Living Magazine laughing since 2011, when he first started writing his ‘View from the Downs’ column. Who remembers the first one about putting on your wellies? “I hate my ‘wellies’.” it starts, never one to mince his words. He continues, “They became increasingly malicious over the winter months when I was forced to use them more A Summer Rain often than usual and now they’re taking advantage of what they perceive as a The massive yew tree greenly heaves position of strength.” Not Against the westering rain. many people would have Swifts are huddled in household eaves, the insight to view this The sky’s a darkening stain. daily struggle as funny, let alone be able to write an The river rises hour by hour entire hilarious column Along the leaning bank. about it. Roger received a Navel Scholarship, which was a very rare thing indeed for a Grammar School boy, and was somewhat of a shock to his professional musician parents. Although not a musician himself, Roger loved music and Liz recalls him telling her that one of his most memorable experiences was when he went to the BBC studios in Glasgow and listened to his father play the viola with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. As the only member of the audience, this 10 or 11-year-old boy felt very privileged. His adoration of music continued, as he wrote in another of his columns about inviting a string quartet into the living room, much to the dismay of his “long-suffering wife Liz.” Going on to join the Royal Marines in September 1961, Roger served for nine years and made some lifelong friends in the process. Apparently when things got a little tough, Roger liked to lighten the mood with a song and dance and chuckle his way through the hard times. From the Royal Marines Roger married Elizabeth Gwinnell (Liz) and became a loving and dedicated family man to Richard, Chas and Beccy. Beccy fondly recalls how he would tease her about the ridiculous names of the bands she was into as a teenager, and was convinced she was making them up. To get even, Roger mocked up some ‘band’ covers himself and left them lying around, ‘Startled Bison’ his chosen name. Sport was another of Roger’s passions, and he played and supported many different sports and teams. Liz and Beccy showed me some wonderful pictures of the family on skiing holidays, where Roger was apparently renowned for his comically badly applied lip zinc, circling around his mouth like a clown. Sussex was a dear place to Roger, and around 1970 the family took up residence there. Roger started commuting to London where he worked variously for the National Opinion Polls, in Public Relations, Publishing, Advertising, and for Lloyds TSB and Trustcard. Many of his position were very senior, working as Associate or Managing Director. Travel was also included in Roger’s career, as he made fast friends
www.sussexliving.com
with visiting ministers from Saudie Arabia, who subsequently invited him and Liz out to visit. Although not keen on the commute, it did give Roger vital material for his ‘View from the Train’ column, which appeared in the Evening Argusin the 90s. Again, these columns were laugh-out-loud funny with his dry sense of humour and astute observational comedy. Reading some gems from the 90s, Roger has me snorting at my desk as he writes about sitting in the wrong seat and having to play bridge with what seems a slightly dangerous fanatic. “My game could best be described as erratic and if my partner is reading this, I only doubled the five spades because your mate was making me nervous – you know, the one standing in the aisle making noises as though he had stomach-ache.” Writing was indeed a great passion in Roger’s life and once the long London commute was over he was free to write
widely, both commercially and for pleasure. Along with music and painting, Roger was a great lover of poetry and wrote many of his own. We published ‘A Summer Rain’ in July 2015. Relishing life in his Sussex backwater, Roger enjoyed exploring the countryside with his dog, Archie and Liz, of course. His children and grandchildren were a huge and happy part of his life, as were his many friends and acquaintances. Roger was the sort of man to make you smile, and he will be missed by many. Roger ended his days surrounded by his loving family at St Peter and St James Hospice in Chailey. The family are incredibly grateful to the Hospice and staff for providing them with ceaseless support and would dearly like to raise some funds for the superb work they do. If you feel so inclined please visit Roger’s Sunflower Tribute page where you can donate, leave messages and pictures www.roger.linn.muchloved.com

For a home filled with colour and texture, look no further than the styling of Moroccan homes and gardens. Create your own piece of North African magic and recreate some of the key looks with Lisa de Silva’s styling tips

Moroccan Magic
Rich in history and cultural traditions, Morocco provides masses of inspiration when it comes to home style. Characterised by arched doorways, intricate carvings and colourful textiles, Moroccan interior design can help to update your home, whether you are looking for a complete redesign or simply want to refresh and update your living space. Key decorating tips A visit to Morocco is a feast for the senses, with the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures full of the exoticism and vibrancy rarely found in Northern Europe. If you want to bring a touch of Moroccan magic to your decorating style remember that colour and pattern are essential. A palette of reds, browns, and burnt orange, accented with electric blues and emeralds, can be used to create the look. Plan your colour scheme carefully if decorating an entire room Moroccan style. North facing rooms really benefit from the warm rich colours associated with this look. However, if wall to wall colour seems too overwhelming, stick to neutral walls and floors and pick one or two key accessories, or pieces of furniture to make the brightly coloured Moroccan vibe really sing out. Another stylish way to bring Moroccan design into your home is to base your decorating scheme around a few patterned areas of tiling. Moroccan tiles are stunning and can be used to bring a splash of colour throughout your home in the bathroom, kitchen, patio, right through to the living area. A small cloakroom can look incredible tiled in jewel tones, with
a large mirror, adding far more character than a plain and simple box. Moorish tiles can also be used to create the illusion of a rug in areas such as the dining or cooking zone of your home. They are easy to clean and add a dash of colourful spice. Alternatively, creating a panel of bright Moroccan tiles can create a focal point in any
room with a monochrome palette. Again, if you don’t want to go for the full on multi-coloured look, opt for a one colour design in more muted tones, concentrating instead on the pattern of the tiles. You could also just pick three key shades for your tiles which will also help to create calm rather than confusion.
If you want to bring a touch of Moroccan magic to your decorating style remember that colour and pattern are essential

As someone once said, “Moroccan style is not for the minimalist,” and layering is key
Moroccan style furniture Moroccan inspired furniture can also be used to add a touch of the exotic to your home. Seating in Moroccan homes is traditionally low to the ground, so look for sofas and armchairs that you can sink into. Paired with a low coffee table, the whole look is relaxed and welcoming. For formal dining why not consider a wood carved Moroccan dining table and sideboard. These often display beautiful carvings with traditional inlay and as they are handcrafted, every piece is unique, making them both a focal and talking point of the room. For a more informal mezze, a Moroccan table tray is a great idea for both inside and out. The trays are usually made from hammered metals and have a cleverly designed base, so you can load up the tray in the kitchen and carry it to your guests, before setting down on the base, creating a small Moroccan table. An interesting way to create divisions within your living space is to use a beautiful Moroccan screen. Again, these are often handcrafted and look stylish in both traditional wood, or painted white. The shape could also mimic traditional Moroccan architecture, allowing you to add archways and keyhole designs, bringing character to any room. continued on page 52

Lifestyle Accessories As someone once said, “Moroccan style is not for the minimalist,” and layering is key. Think Bohemian and be bold, mixing colours, patterns and textures to great overall effect. Visitors rarely leave a trip to the souk without a rug and this can be your key accessory when creating Moroccan style. There are two main types of rug. Kilims are flat, woven from cotton and wool and tend to have designs which feature squares, diamonds and stripes. ‘Carpets’ (which are still rugs) have a longer wool pile and usually come in more neutral colours than Kilims. Place over natural wood and next to leather furniture to create texture in a room. Or, add to neutral decoration to provide a splash of colour. Morocco also prides itself on its leather goods industry. A leather pouffe adds style and comfort to any living space. If importing, be warned they often are shipped unstuffed so be prepared to make some effort. Brightly coloured textiles, with embroidery and small pieces of mirror work, can also bring colour and a taste of the bazaar into your home. Patterns tend to be geometric and these fabrics look good as cushion covers, bedspreads or wall hangings. Moroccan mirrors are luxurious and stunning. The frames often have exquisite silver designs and look equally good set within a neutral decor or a Moroccan styled home or garden.
Brightly coloured textiles, with embroidery and small pieces of mirror work, can bring colour and a taste of the bazaar into your home Lighting the way The main feature of Moroccan lighting is the lantern, which used wisely can conjure up a real atmosphere of Arabian nights. Iron lanterns, multicoloured glass lamps and tall tower lamps can all be used to create an intimate ambience. Large floor lamps reflect an array of wonderful shadows cast by intricate cut outs and look great both inside and out. Smaller lamps lend a romantic glow to bedroom areas and for a more contemporary look, search out brass patterned pendant lamps, which can be hung in a cluster, or alone to add drama.

GARDENING
BY FLO WHITAKER
Be Orchid SMART Do orchids make you nervous? Strange aerial roots, spindly stems and flowers as delicate as alighting moths – but don’t let their graceful exterior fool you, these are actually quite hardy and easy house plants If you were given an orchid pot plant for Christmas you may be wondering what on earth you should be doing with it now. You also may be pondering its peculiar ‘compost-thatdoesn’t-really-look-like-compost…’ In the wild, most orchids do not grow in what we typically think of as ‘soil’. They have evolved curious spidery roots in order to anchor themselves into seemingly hostile places. Members’ of the ‘Lithophytic’ orchid family thrive in crevices between rocks and boulders, whereas ‘Epiphytic’ types make themselves high-rise apartments on rainforest trees. Your orchid is likely to be a ‘Cymbidium’ or a ‘Phalaenopsis’; both members of the epiphytic family. They may look like demanding divas, but do, in fact, make easy-going houseplants. Surprisingly perhaps, Cymbidium’s prefer life on the cool side. Flowering from autumn through to the following spring, they will happily reside in an unheated spare room, porch or conservatory, so long as the temperature never dips below 12°c or thereabouts. In common with many other orchids, their flowers will last for a month or more. Scorching summer heat is their enemy, so if you can’t fi nd a cool spot indoors, let them have a summer holiday outside in light shade. Phalaenopsis, (often known as the ‘Moth’ orchid), is a real heat worshipper. A well-lit spot in a warm room is what it craves. If the room is comfortably toasty for you, a moth orchid will feel right at home, although they hate draughts and fluctuations in temperature, so keep them away from cool windowsills and open doors, especially at night when the central heating turns off. If happy, these types will flower pretty much non-stop. They love high humidity and will enjoy a daily misting of tepid water.
Orchids thrive on a feeding regime from spring through to autumn. Use a specialist orchid feed as standard houseplant food will be too rich. Go steady on the watering too; roots can quickly become waterlogged – a weekly watering will usually suffice, fortnightly during winter. Re-pot in spring, using specialist compost. If the roots are severely congested, hold your nerve and divide the plant into several pieces using a sharp, sterile knife. Pot the new plants on individually. Don’t bury the aerial roots. Orchids naturally produce both types – if buried, aerial ones will simply rot. About that ‘funny’ compost... primarily a loose mix of moss and bark chippings, it imitates the natural conditions of wild orchids growing in mid-air with their roots exposed to light. Tree-dwelling orchids know that falling leaves, plus high humidity equals perfect conditions for an endless supply of compost. Clever, eh? Don’t be fooled – they’re not just pretty faces. They are the Marilyn Monroe’s of the plant world; glamorous, dizzyingly beautiful – and very, very smart.
Orchids may look like demanding divas, but do, in fact, make easy-going houseplants

Local Walk
by Les Campbell
Ditchling WALK Dust off your boots for this lovely little February walk from Ditchling to Westmeston and back again, then enjoy the beautiful village of Ditchling with its cafes, pubs and shops This 3.5 mile circular walk starts from Ditchling Recreation Ground on the B2116 Lewes Road. It follows a mainly field path route to Westmeston, before returning to Ditchling along bridleways and a section of the Westmeston Jubilee Pathway. It can be muddy in places especially during the winter months! The section between Shirleys and Westmeston is a little tricky to follow, so hopefully my directions are adequate and you won’t get lost! Opposite the car park, take the signed path between houses to Shirleys. Cross this road diagonally to another narrow path between houses. At the end of the path, go over a footbridge and squeeze stile and into a rough area of ground. Take the left of two paths to go over a Monday Group stile and carry on ahead along a wide path through a section of woodland. Go over two stiles in quick succession and carry on ahead through

woodland on the obvious track. Just past a waymark post, take the left fork to go over a stile. Leave the wood through a tall metal gate and bear fractionally right to follow a fence line down the field ahead. At the bottom of the field, go through another tall gate, over a footbridge and stile, and follow the obvious path ahead through a paddock to a stile in the corner. Ignore the stile a little to your left. Follow a fence line to another stile, and carry on ahead close to a house and cross a paddock to another stile. Go over the stile down some steps, and left to join the B2116 at Westmeston. Turn left along the B2116 for a few yards, then right up a steep bank on a flight of steps and take the fenced path ahead to a stile with a house on your right. buildings on your right and go through the gate ahead. On reaching a large field, do not go right, but carry straight on to a distant stile in the fence line ahead. Go over the stile and cross the field ahead to go through a gap in the fence and out to join a bridleway known as the Middleton Track. The large house on your right is Middleton Manor and is a grade 2 listed building. Turn left along this bridleway for about ¼ mile and at a cross paths turn left. Follow the wide path through Sedlow Wood to join the B2116 at Blackdog Hill. Note the sign saying Wapple Way, wapple being the old name for a bridleway. Cross to the Westmeston Jubilee Pathway opposite, and turn right and follow this recently created pathway which runs parallel to the B2116 back to the start of the walk. The Jubilee Pathway was created to provide a safe route along the B2116 for both pedestrians and equestrians travelling between Westmeston and Ditchling. We are very grateful to Les Campbell for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. A founder member and former Chairman of the Mid Sussex Ramblers, he is a very experienced and enthusiastic walker indeed. Les insists on testing all routes personally, making sure they are suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. If you would like to send your feedback about a local walk, please email editorial@sussexliving.com

Chilli salmon
with garlic and lemon spinach This salmon dish is a favourite of mine, it’s just so tasty! I especially like to cook it for a romantic evening when the children have gone to bed, with a glass of prosecco and a candlelit table. Light and delicious with a pleasing kick from the chilli, this would make the perfect Valentine’s meal. SERVES 2

SUSSEX LIVING February 2016
Love food Whether you love them or hate them, oysters will be fi lling the tummies of many this February in time for a love-fi lled Valentine’s Day There’s an old wives tale that says oysters should only be eaten when there’s an “R” in the month. The truth behind this was to avoid oysters during the summer months because heat made them spoil and those were months for shellfish reproduction. The native oyster (Ostrea edulis) found in UK waters is protected by law because they require five years to mature before harvesting. Your local fishmonger and restaurant is more likely to stock the faster growing Pacific oyster. Oysters were once considered so plentiful they were cheap food for the Victorian poor. For the Romans they were a luxury and with their aphrodisiac associations, an orgy was incomplete without a plentiful supply. 18th century studmuffi n Casanova was said to have 50 oysters for breakfast – maybe for lunch he had indigestion!
There’s no doubt they’re nutritionally good, containing zinc, iron, calcium, selenium as well as vitamins A and B, low in calories and high in protein. Science aside, the proof is in the eating. Firstly, oyster shucking needs to take place and when doing this it’s best to avoid the dead ones and the clackers. A skilled shucker can split an oyster in seconds, but for the amateur, a crowbar, hammer and glistening forehead might feel more appropriate. According to the purists, oysters are best eaten alive, off shell with a little lemon, shallot vinegar, or Tabasco sauce. They can be cooked or smoked as well. Whether to let the thing slip down your throat or to chew slowly and release the other flavours is purely personal choice. Personally, I have never tried an oyster, but until I do, as Shakespeare once wrote, “Why then the world’s mine oyster.” www.sussexliving.com

Banana Bread is a classic bake that is perfect for all of those that have been good and stuck to their ‘be healthier’ New Year’s resolutions as it has proven to be a scrummy (but not-sonaughty) treat… plus bananas are packed full of potassium. With St Valentine’s Day falling in the middle of the month it also makes a wonderful breakfast in bed when sliced, toasted and buttered.

Buy With
Conf idence Where do you turn when you need a business you can trust? How do you know the number you call is going to get you a reputable workman (or woman) who won’t let you down or rip you off? The brand new West Sussex Buy With Confidence directory, which features approved traders from West Sussex and Brighton and Hove, can take the stress out of all those hard decisions. Whether it’s a trustworthy plumber or a reputable roofer you’re after, the directory is produced every 6 months to help protect people from rogue traders. You can pick it up for free

from a number of places across West Sussex, or view it online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/bwc It features the details of nearly 450 approved traders. Buy With Confidence protects consumers by ensuring every business which appears on its pages has been thoroughly vetted by Trading Standards officers. Each business listed, whatever its size or trade, has agreed to provide a trustworthy and high standard of customer service. They are also regularly monitored to ensure these levels are maintained. Buy With Confidence is open to all businesses, from one person operations to major employers. Builders, carpenters and electricians can be found alongside DJs, Funeral Directors and caterers. By signing up to the scheme each business has agreed to be
regularly monitored by Trading Standards to make sure they maintain high standards and, where applicable under the terms of the scheme, criminal records checks have been carried out on their staff. For businesses in West Sussex, the annual membership fee is £325 (including VAT) or £425 (including VAT) which is inclusive of Brighton and Hove. Businesses who sign up to Buy With Confidence are entitled to a free listing in the Directory, a place on the Buy With Confidence website with a link to their own website, a certificate of membership to display in their premises, use of the Buy With Confidence logo by their business and a regular member’s newsletter containing up-to-date information about the scheme. The website can also be used to search for member businesses in your area. Any business in West Sussex that wants to join the scheme is encouraged to look at www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk where they can find full details, make an initial application and see where the directory is available to pick up.
